nd we’re off! 60 days on a whirlwind tour of the western US’ best luxury, ecofriendly properties and farm-to-table restaurants. As many of you know, my other passion aside from educating people on natural health alternatives, is travel! More specifically, travel to find hotels and restaurants that are striving to help protect and save our beautiful planet by implementing ecofriendly and sustainable initiatives. There is nothing more exciting for me than to be able to inform my readers about a great hotel that really cares about its effect on the environment – or a wonderful restaurant that sources locally and creates amazing seasonal dishes so we can eat healthier and more sustainably. Anyone who travels frequently knows the frustration involved in trying to find the perfect location or hotel – let alone one that’s ecofriendly! You have to check Tripadvisor, Yelp, Jetsetter, hotel websites, Expedia, Travelocity and God knows what other websites to ensure that the lodging you choose actually lives up to the beautiful photography they have on their website that’s carefully plotted by their marketing department! After spending hours and days doing this myself for many trips, I thought to myself – wouldn’t it be awesome if there was just one website I could visit, where I knew the properties and restaurants had already been vetted by someone I knew and trusted. I actually vocalized this on many occasions to my friends and family and every one of them said – “Yes, that would be fantastic…Di, why don’t you do that?” Hmm…what a novel idea. So, I started my ecotravel department for Natural Nutmeg. Fast forward a few years and here I am on this trip to gather information for a book tentatively entitled, “Eat, Sleep, Play, Thrive...in the USA: Finding America’s Best Farm-to-Table Restaurants, Ecofriendly Luxury Hotels, and Outdoor Adventure.” We flew into Denver on August 20th and will be traveling through Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and New Mexico. You can follow our trip on our blog, “Where is Dr Di on www.naturalnutmeg. com, through Facebook on our fan pages and I’ll also be writing articles on the restaurants and properties we stay at that will be featured throughout the year in Natural Nutmeg and Essential Living Maine. I hope to provide you with some fantastic information about hotels and restaurants that are truly getting it right when it comes to ecofriendly initiatives and maybe you will be inspired to experience them yourselves! In health and happiness,

THE BUZZ “We’re Having Way Too Much Fun to Retire” For the Owners of The Clean Bedroom, Now’s Not the Time to Rest
I
t’s ironic that we specialize in organic mattresses, yet we have no desire to slow down and rest,” says Chris Chamberlin, 65, who cofounded The Clean Bedroom nearly a decade ago with husband, Ted Duquette, 70+. “We’re having way too much fun to retire—or even to take a nap, despite working in a sleep showroom and being surrounded by the coziest beds.” Celebrating its 10th anniversary later this year, The Clean Bedroom has grown over the last decade from a small online upstart to the premier resource for allergy-free, eco-friendly mattresses, bedding, and accessories with sleep showrooms across the country. And that growth is the result of Chamberlin and Duquette’s many sleepless nights, marathon meetings, and frequent-flier miles, as well as their dedication to all-natural living. “Back in 2004, after Ted learned about the toxic chemicals that lurk in conventional mattresses, we started investigating organic options, and eventually we started selling all-natural mattresses online from our Maine home,” says Chamberlin. “As interest grew, first from people with chemical sensitivities, then from people wishing to go green in their bedrooms, we began opening up sleep showrooms so everyone from California to Maine could test-drive—or test-nap!—an organic mattress before making an investment.” While friends their age are retiring, Chamberlin and Duquette feel re-energized by all the potential they see for their company, and have no plans to stop working anytime soon. “We’re definitely trying to take the time to enjoy our success and all that we’ve worked for over the years,” says Duquette. “But, at the same time, we’re making plans, setting goals, and getting excited about all the new products we hope to share. Maybe we’ll take a nap next year.” Chris Chamberlin and Ted Duquette are co-founders and co-owners of The Clean Bedroom. The company has sleep showrooms in Santa Monica, CA, Austin, TX, New York, NY, Greenwich, CT, Wellesley, MA, Portland, ME, and Kittery, ME. Online, on the phone, and in each showroom, the company’s trained organic mattress specialists help match customers with their ideal mattress, without pressure or marketing hype. Don’t Wait To Exhale: The Essentials of Deep Breathing an Anti-Cancer Therapy
Y
ears prior to an individual being diagnosed with cancer, there are biochemical changes occurring in the body. The three stages of tumor genesis are Induction, Promotion and Progression. Chronic stress is a major contributor in cancer promotion. Stress cannot be avoided, it is a side effect of a modernized society and a digital age, so are we all doomed? In fact it is not that the event of stress that renders us susceptible to disease, but rather our physiological response to stress. One simple, inexpensive intervention strategy in stress management is deep breathing exercises. This process does not require you to be a meditation Guru in order to yield positive results all that is required is a quiet space and initially 10-15 minutes of your time. In your designated space of solitude, find a comfortable chair. Closing the eyes simply eliminates any visual stimuli that might interfere with your ability to relax. Begin by taking a deep breath in, filling and expanding the abdomen. Hold this cleansing breath for 5 seconds, then slowly, exhale through the mouth expelling the air from your lungs. Your abdomen should flatten as the air is expelled. Being mindful of your body becoming more relaxed with each successive inhalation and exhalation. Although deep breathing exercises cannot be touted as a cure for cancer, it can be used to manage the effects of chronic stress and its detrimental effects on the body and thus can be an important tool in cancer prevention and management. Take deep breaths and exhale as often as time allows, in fact if time does not allow make time in your day, every day to perform deep breathing exercises. Don’t “ Wait to Exhale.” Dr. Yvette M. Whitton is owner and Founder of Adonai Optimal Health and Wellness, LLC with offices in Milford and Newtown, CT. Dr. Whitton practices naturopathic medicine and integrative oncology. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Emotions
T
raditional Chinese medicine is unique in its tenet that cause and effect are not linear, but circular. This means that the cause of an ailment may be an emotion, or that an ailment can lead to an emotion. By striving to balance the organ related to the person’s emotional state, the emotion can be balanced as well, and vice versa. Traditional Chinese Herbal Therapy is one way to accomplish this re-alignment.
Emotions Can Open – or Close – the Door to Disease Emotions are considered to be normal and healthy; it is only when they become extreme or uncontrollable that they can open the door to disease. TCM practitioners believe that emotions can be the major internal cause of disease; and can be easily influenced. In other words, with the right intention and treatment, emotions and their corresponding ailments can change. Emotions in TCM have slightly different meanings than their Western interpretations. In TCM, joy refers to a state of agitation or over-excitement, rather than elation. Related to the heart, this emotion is correlated with heart palpitations, repeated agitation, and insomnia. Anger in TCM is considered to represent resentment, frustration, and irritability. Excess heat in the blood is believed to make one prone to anger, and can affect the liver, causing this organ’s energy to rise to the head and result in headaches or dizziness.

Natural Nutmeg - October 2014
Over thinking and worry is thought to be an excess of mental stimulation that can affect the spleen (which rules over vital energy). This can result in fatigue, lethargy, and difficulty concentrating. Fear is considered normal and at times, inevitable. However, if it becomes chronic, or settles as a deep anxiety, the kidneys can be affected. The kidney’s ability to hold Qi may be impaired and involuntary urination is just one symptom that can occur. Lungs are associated with the feeling of grief. Unresolved grief can lead to problems with general energy and one’s Qi (life force) because the lungs are thought to protect the body from pathogens. Guilt, is a prominent emotion often exhibited today and impacts just about every energetic organ of the body. It is completely missing from ancient Chinese medicine books as an emotional cause of disease. It can be simply said that Guilt does not exist in the Chinese psyche yet is ever present in the modern world. It is manifested in many different ways and is anger directed at self rather than directed at another person.
Prepare for a Healthy Autumn It is practical to look at each season and prepare physically and emotionally for the changes about to happen to our bodies. To believe that our environment does not impact our health and mind is narrow thinking, so preparing for the season of autumn helps the ‘energetic’ organ of the lung. The lung takes charge of Qi, governs
respiration, and emotionally relates to grief and sadness which easily impairs the lung. As the autumnal climate turns cooler, grass withers and the leaves fall. That sight can easily strike a chord in some people’s hearts. There may be feelings of being desolate, dreary, unfrequented, old and feeble. As a result of witnessing and being submerged in fall, emotional changes occur such as depression, restlessness of the mind and grieving for the loss of sunlight. One suggestion to help with autumnal health preservation is to develop optimism and think of the joy of the fruitful harvest, which might lead to psychological relief. We should tranquilize the mind and stabilize all emotions to maintain vitality. Failing to keep the emotions balanced may lead to excessive melancholy (don’t you just love that word!) and leaves the body open to pathogens that may invade our bodies, like colds and flu as well.
Herbs for Strength and Stability To protect our lungs from the physical and emotional disturbances that the season brings, Traditional Chinese Herbal Therapy suggests that, while you’re well, you use such herbs as Astragalus, Siberian ginseng (Eleuthro), and other superior herbs based on your constitution, to keep you emotionally stable and physically strong. Laura Mignosa is a Certified Chinese Herbologist and director of the Connecticut Institute for Herbal Studies for over two decades. She is both Western and China trained and offers an annual study, each year in April, on this amazing tradition of healing. Any practitioner or layperson taking these intensives will learn how to keep the body strong and balance disharmonies to maintain a true quality of life. Please call the school at 860-826-2705 or visit our website www. ctherbschool.com for more information on this clinically based program of wellness or for appointments for care. You may find articles and events on her facebook page: lauramignosa5 or email at Laurachina@aol.com. See ad this page.

Natural Nutmeg - October 2014
These were people who were living each day and not involved in avoiding dying. They accepted their mortality and lived meaningful lives. How many of us truly do what feels good for us to do and are capable of saying no to things that we do not want to do? When you heal your life and find peace of mind your body gets the message too. Everything I am saying is scientific. We are capable of genetic changes and spontaneous reversals (just as bacteria, viruses and plants do) to resist antibiotics, vaccines and environmental changes. Our genes become active in response to the internal environment. Most women with a gene for breast cancer do not develop it. Twin sisters with the gene for breast cancer do not both develop the disease. The sister more likely to do so is the one who internalizes her anger and spends her life pleasing her parents and everyone else. I am not saying this to place blame but to awaken you to the choices you have in your life. We are changed internally by the way we act. If I put you in a play, as an actor, I can enhance your health in a comedy and damage it in a tragedy. I know two patients who tired of their therapy, went home with extensive cancer and “Left their troubles to God.” And their cancers disappeared. No wars just peace. So go and find what is right for you as treatment for your disease. If you are afraid of dying then do everything everyone suggests. If it is doing what is right for you and what brings you peace then go with it and know you will have fewer side effects when you decide which labor pains are worthwhile and of your choosing. I meet people who hate vegetables and would prefer chemotherapy as treatment so they can enjoy their meals at home with the family. The choice of the road to healing is yours. Remember we all die some day and if you do things to not die you will be very bitter when you get to Heaven. The way to beat cancer is related to how you live your life — the experience and what you teach others. None of us will live forever. Death is not a failure nor is it losingthe-battle; though again, the way most doctors talk you would think it is. The Gerson Therapy
By Helene Pulnik, ND, Certified Gerson Therapy Practitioner
T
he Gerson Therapy is a natural nutritional therapy that activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, coffee enemas, and natural supplements. With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy naturally reactivates your body’s magnificent ability to heal itself with no damaging side effects.
Strengthening the Immune System This powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases. Dr. Max Gerson developed the Gerson Therapy in the 1930s, initially as a treatment for his own debilitating migraines, and eventually as a treatment for degenerative diseases such as skin tuberculosis, diabetes and, most famously, cancer.
Treating Cancer with Nutrition The Gerson Therapy for cancer patients is a nutritional program, using 100% fresh, organic foods, which may help patients keep up strength and energy, improve or maintain quality of life, and restore the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. Nutrition is a process in which food is taken in and used by the body for growth, to keep the body healthy, and to replace tissue. Good nutrition is important for good health. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during, and after cancer treatment can help the patient feel better and stay stronger. A healthy diet includes eating and drinking enough of the foods and liquids that have the important nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat, and water) the body needs. When the body does not get or cannot absorb the nutrients needed for health, it causes a condition called malnutrition or malnourishment. Healthy eating habits are important during cancer treatment. 12
Natural Nutmeg - October 2014
Nutrition therapy is used to help cancer patients get the nutrients they need to keep up their body weight and strength, keep body tissue healthy, and fight infection. Eating habits that are good for cancer patients can be very different from the usual healthy eating guidelines. Healthy eating habits and good nutrition can help patients deal with the effects of cancer and its treatment. Some cancer treatments work better when the patient is well nourished and gets enough calories and protein in the diet. Patients who are well nourished may have a better prognosis (chance of recovery) and quality of life.
Cancer Affects Nutrition Cancer can change the way the body uses food. Some tumors make chemicals that change the way the body uses certain nutrients. The body’s use of protein, carbohydrates, and fat may be effected, especially by tumors of the stomach or intestines. A patient may seem to be eating enough, but the body may not be able to absorb all the nutrients from the food. Cancer and cancer treatments may affect nutrition. For many patients, the effects of cancer and cancer treatments make it hard to eat well. Cancer treatments that affect nutrition include: • Surgery • Chemotherapy • Radiation therapy • Immunotherapy • Stem cell transplant When the head, neck, esophagus, stomach, or intestines are effected by the cancer treatment, it is very hard to take in enough nutrients to stay healthy.
The side effects of cancer and cancer treatment that can affect eating include: • Anorexia (loss of appetite) • Mouth sores • Dry mouth • Trouble swallowing • Nausea • Vomiting
• Diarrhea • Constipation • Pain • Depression • Anxiety
Nutrition therapy may be helpful for the following: • help increase appetite. • help digest food. • help the muscles of the stomach and intestines contract (to keep food moving along). • prevent or treat nausea and vomiting. • prevent or treat diarrhea. • prevent or treat constipation.
Cancer and Malnutrition
Restoring the Body’s Ability to Heal Itself
Cancer and cancer treatments may affect taste, smell, appetite, and the ability to eat enough food or absorb the nutrients from food. This can cause malnutrition (a condition caused by a lack of key nutrients). Malnutrition can cause the patient to be weak, tired, and unable to fight infections or get through cancer treatment. Malnutrition may be made worse if the cancer grows or spreads. Eating too little protein and calories is a very common problem for cancer patients. Having enough protein and calories is important for healing, fighting infection, and having enough energy. Anorexia and cachexia are common causes of malnutrition in cancer patients. Anorexia (the loss of appetite or desire to eat) is a common symptom in people with cancer. Anorexia may occur early in the disease or later, if the cancer grows or spreads. Some patients already have anorexia when they are diagnosed with cancer. Almost all patients who have advanced cancer will have anorexia. Anorexia is the most common cause of malnutrition in cancer patients. Cachexia is a condition marked by a loss of appetite, weight loss, muscle loss, and general weakness. It is common in patients with tumors of the lung, pancreas, and upper gastrointestinal tract. It is important to watch for and treat cachexia early in cancer treatment because it is hard to correct. Cancer patients may have anorexia and cachexia at the same time. Nutrition therapy can help cancer symptoms and side effects that affect eating and cause weight loss.
The Gerson Therapy‘s all-encompassing nature sets it apart from most other nutritional therapy methods for cancer patients. Also, The Gerson Therapy effectively treats a wide range of different ailments because it restores the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. Rather than treating only the symptoms of a particular disease, the Gerson Therapy treats the causes of most degenerative diseases: toxicity and nutritional deficiency, which are especially problematic in patients with cancer. During the Gerson Therapy, an abundance of nutrients from copious amounts of fresh, organic juices are consumed every day, providing your body with a super-dose of enzymes, minerals and nutrients. These substances then break down diseased tissue in the body, while coffee enemas aid in eliminating toxins from the liver. Throughout our lives our bodies are being filled with a variety of carcinogens and toxic pollutants. These toxins reach us through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the medicines we take and the water we drink. The Gerson Therapy’s intensive detoxification regimen eliminates these toxins from the body, so that true healing can begin.
How the Gerson Therapy Works The Gerson Therapy regenerates the body to health, supporting each important metabolic requirement by flooding the body with nutrients from about 15- 20 pounds of organically grown fruits and

vegetables daily. Most is used to make fresh raw juice, up to one glass every hour, up to 13 times per day. Raw and cooked solid foods are generously consumed. Oxygenation is usually more than doubled, as oxygen deficiency in the blood contributes to many degenerative diseases. Degenerative diseases render the body increasingly unable to excrete waste materials adequately, commonly resulting in liver and kidney failure. The Gerson Therapy uses intensive detoxification to eliminate wastes, regenerate the liver, reactivate the immune system and restore the body’s essential defenses – enzyme, mineral and hormone systems. With generous, high-quality nutrition, increased oxygen availability, detoxification, and improved metabolism, the cells—and the body—can regenerate, become healthy and prevent future illness. The Gerson Diet should only be started under the supervision of a licensed physician who is trained in The Gerson Therapy. The Gerson diet is entirely organic and vegetarian. The diet is naturally high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, micronutrients, and extremely low in sodium, fats, and proteins. The following is a typical daily diet for a Gerson patient on the full therapy regimen: Thirteen glasses of fresh, raw carrot/ apple and green-leaf juices prepared hourly from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Drinking fresh-pressed juice from raw foods is the easiest and most effective way to get high-quality nutrition. By juicing, patients can take in the nutrients and enzymes from nearly 15 pounds of produce every day, in a manner that is easy to digest and absorb. The juices are prepared hourly from fresh, raw, organic fruits and vegetables, using a two-step juicer or a masticating juicer used with a separate hydraulic press. Three full vegetarian meals, freshly prepared from organically grown fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A typical meal will include salad, cooked vegetables, baked potatoes, Hippocrates soup and juice. Fresh fruit and fresh fruit should be available at all hours for snacking, in addition to the regular diet.
Detoxification Detoxification on the Gerson Therapy involve coffee enemas, which are prescribed by your Gerson Doctor and adjusted to your individual condition.

Is the Gerson Therapy Right For You? No treatment works for everyone, every time. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not giving you the facts. We know that when you have been diagnosed with a life-threatening ailment, choosing the best strategy for fighting your illness can be a bewildering task. Everyone claims to have either the best treatment, the fastest cure, or the only therapy that works. In most cases your trusted family physician only has knowledge of conventional treatments, and is either unaware of, or even hostile toward alternative options. Most therapies–conventional or alternative–treat only the individual symptoms while ignoring what is ultimately causing the disease. The reason the Gerson Therapy is effective with so many different ailments is because it restores the body’s incredible ability to heal itself. Rather than treating only the symptoms of a particular disease, the Gerson Therapy treats the cause of the disease itself. Although we feel the Gerson Therapy is the most comprehensive treatment for disease, we don’t claim it will cure everything or everyone.

Why Can’t I Lose Weight and Keep It Off?
F
ully 90% of people who are successful at losing weight at some point in their lives wind up regaining all of the lost pounds, and often more. What are the reasons for this rebound, and what can be done to lose weight successfully and keep it off permanently? To answer this, let’s first look at some of the myths put out to the public, and uncover the truth: 1. It’s all a matter of math. Reduce the intake of calories and increase caloric burning, and you are sure to lose weight. While this might make sense on the surface, physiology and metabolics simply don’t support it. When you reduce caloric intake, your body adjusts its metabolism to thrive on the new lower amount of calories being supplied; this takes a little time and you may drop some weight early on, but your body eventually catches on and goes into high-efficiency mode, sabotaging your continued weight-loss success. Fasting is the extreme example of this. In addition, much of the lost weight is from muscle tissue, which is now no longer available to burn calories, creating a kind of vicious cycle that can prevent further weight loss. Finally, the wrong forms of exercise, designed to burn calories, can weaken the stress hormonal system and ultimately weaken the immune system to a point where further weight loss is nearly impossible. 2. “I’ll just stay clear of sugars (or fats, or toxins, etc.), my cravings will go away, and then I’ll lose weight.” Discontinuing or limiting the intake of any particular food group may decrease total-calorie-intake, but as we read in the above example, this rarely works. Limiting simple sugars does work to help normalize and balance blood sugar, which can reduce cravings for sweets, as blood sugar spikes are flattened out, but again, a compromised stress hormonal system will have difficulty balancing blood sugar as needed. Similarly, all fats should not be avoided, as certain fats are necessary for the production of hormones, cell walls, nerve tissue, and other integral structures of the body. We’ll get into which fats are expendable and which are necessary in a future discussion. 3. “I’ll just go on a Paleo diet. I’ve heard these are great for weight loss.” Well, we’re getting closer—every few months it seems a new diet comes along, makes authors (and some network marketing companies) rich overnight, and disappears as quickly as it arrived on the scene. There are those which have actually had some staying power, and fortunately it seems those which make the most sense stick around the longest. They all lead us to the current rage, the Paleo Diet, and with good reason. For most of us, purely from a standpoint of what foods to eat, this type of diet stands above the rest. But it doesn’t work in a vacuum, and it can’t work well with sub-optimal physiology underpinning the changes. What I’m saying is, following a Paleo-type of diet (and there are several) is a great choice for many folks, but as you do so, fix the hardware first.

If you purchased a classic Ferrari which was sitting in a yard for years, you wouldn’t think that changing to high-test fuel alone would make it purr like a kitten again; no, you’d first have to do some overhauling and maintenance before the proper fuel will be able to burn cleanly and convert to horsepower. Treat your own personal Ferrari (your body) the same way. Here’s how this is done.
Three main variables are responsible for the lion’s share of properly metabolizing food and maintaining a healthy weight: 1. The stress response hormonal system. By this we mean your adrenal glands, and the job they perform in regulating blood sugar, maintaining an adequate level of Surface Immunoglobulin A (SigA), and providing needed energy upon demand. When this system is not functioning properly, two major things can occur which affect weight stability. a. Regular daily cycles of cortisol production are thrown off, causing a host of imbalances, resulting in cravings, blood sugar swings, and perhaps most importantly, interruption of SigA production, which can have a profound effect on gut health and digestion. b. Adrenal exhaustion can result, which prevents the conversion of larger macromolecules to blood sugar when needed, causing peaks and valleys, resulting in increased cravings and energy drops. 2. Compromise of gastrointestinal health. Once the stress response system has been affected for an extended period, the GI tract begins to suffer downstream; it suffers in two ways: a. The reduced production of SigA, which acts as a protective barrier between the inside of the gut and the bloodstream, allows for the breakdown of the barrier. Cells within the brush border of the intestines actually develop gaps between them (you may have heard of this as “Leaky Gut”), allowing sub stances to pass through which shouldn’t, and can be perceived by the immune system a foreign invaders. This sets the scene for a host of reactions, which can be the source of many conditions ranging from headaches and fatigue, all the way to autoimmune responses. A body dealing with this has a hard time digesting and metabolizing properly, and proper regular exercise becomes extremely difficult.
b. The gut tissue becomes more susceptible to bacterial, viral, and helminthic infections, further compromising digestion and gut health. These pathogens can now live and hide in the crypts provided by the Leaky Gut phenomenon, and can be extremely hard to find and kill. These infections can show up not only as digestive symptoms, but just as often as symptoms elsewhere in the body, seemingly having no relation to the GI tract. 3. Systemic toxicity. Following a poor diet can allow for ingestion of a wide range of toxic substances, which eventually collect and build up in the fatty tissues of the body as well as in the liver. Once in this state, the body has a difficult time excreting toxic substances, liver functions are impaired, and fats cannot be utilized for energy production because they’re bound to toxins. This condition is largely dietary in origin, but is also contributed to by pollution, pesticides, heavy metals, and chemicals we are exposed to throughout our lives.
So, What’s the Prescription? From what you’ve just read, we now know the steps we must take in order to affect proper metabolism and weight maintenance: 1. We need to repair a broken stress-response system. 2. We need to kill gut pathogens and repair a damaged intestinal tract. 3. We need to mobilize and remove excessive toxins from the body. 4. We need to alter our intake of food to maintain this repaired system and keep it running optimally.

OK, how? 1. Repairing the broken stress response system: before fixing, we must find out what’s broken; this is accomplished by simple salivabased lab testing which uncovers exactly where and when the function is aberrant. Once fixed through the use of specific nutritional supplementation and botanicals, the system functions properly on its own (unless insulted again). 2. Killing pathogens and healing the gut: again, let’s find out which pathogens exist and what damage they’ve done…achieved via the use of lab tests performed on stool, and giving us a clear picture of what killing needs to be done and what needs to heal. 3. Detoxification: after finding out exactly which toxins are present in excess via urinebased tests, we will undertake to strengthen the liver pathways responsible for converting toxins into a less damaging form, and excreting them www.NaturalNutmeg.com

from the body…accomplished with specific nutritional protocols designed to do this gently and over time. 4. Making the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes to effect permanent change: as expected, each and every patient seen will have differing dietary changes required, based on their lab results and current lifestyle. However, each prescription will result in the normalization and balance of the systems discussed. So, what have we really done that’s different? Going back to our automobile analogy, we’ve not only found a gas station which supplies only the highest quality, cleanest-burning fuel. We’ve taken the Ferrari apart and rebuilt it so it can get the most out of every drop of this precious fuel. It will now run lean and mean, unless we abuse it or feed it inferior fuel. What we will continue to do as an investment in the future performance of our beloved machine is to take it in periodically for a diagnostic evaluation, re-balance or correct any slight faults which may show up as a result of normal wear and tear, and we’ll take it out for an exhilarating drive in the open air regularly, allowing all systems to function smoothly and properly. Back to being a human again…weight will normalize, health will optimize, physiological systems will function smoothly, and signs and symptoms of poor health will abate. No, it’s not the result of a pill, shot, or shake, but it is now totally under YOUR control. Dr. Eric M. No Flu for You!
Prevention Recommendations for Cold and Flu Season
By Michael B. Teiger, MD
he cold and flu season is here and will be with us for several months to come. No one can predict how bad this season will be, but there are some things you can do to minimize the risk of getting ill and spreading the illness to others.
T
against all infectious disease. Avoid ALL sugars when possible (fructose in particular), artificial sweeteners, and processed foods. This includes fructose from fruit juice and all types of grains (as they break down as sugar in your body).
Please consider the following for yourselves and your families:
3. Proper Hand Sanitation - Wash, Wash, Wash
The Three Most Potent Cold and Flu Prevention Strategies
Hand washing is an easy way to prevent infection and it’s one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness. Viruses are spread by hand contact as well as coughing and sneezing.
1. Optimize Your Vitamin D Levels We believe it’s possible that the widespread prevalence of colds and flus may actually be due to vitamin D deficiency, which is incredibly common in the United States, Vitamin D produces 200 to 300 different antimicrobial peptides in your body that kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. Essentially, it works as a very broad antibacterial and antiviral agent. Consider 3,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.
2. Avoid Excess Sugar Consumption It’s important to remember that excessive sugar consumption effectively suppresses your immune system and impairs your defenses

Other Natural Ways to Build Your Immune System 1. Zinc: According to a Cochrane Database Review of the medical research on zinc, when taken within one day of the first symptoms, zinc can cut down the duration of a cold by about 24 hours (Identical results to Tamiflu). It was also found to greatly reduce the severity of symptoms. We recommend 30 - 50 mg Zinc tablets daily. 2. Chicken soup: Chicken contains a natural amino acid called cysteine, which can thin the mucus in your lungs and make it less sticky so you can expel it more easily. For best results, make up a fresh batch yourself (or ask a friend or family member to do so) and make the soup hot and spicy with plenty of pepper. The spices will
trigger a sudden release of watery fluids in your mouth, throat, and lungs, which will help thin down the respiratory mucus so it’s easier to cough up and expel. We also strongly recommend using local pastured chicken and simmering the bones (and the feet if available) for 24 hours to get the most you can out of the chicken. It makes an absolutely heavenly soup.
Shoreline Physical Therapy
3. Mushrooms: While most people think only of eating the fleshy fruiting body of the mushroom (the part that grows above ground), most of the benefits are actually located in their complex root structure, called the mycelium. Beta glucans and proteoglycans are the primary biologically active compounds in the mushroom fruit body and mycelia that support your immune system. The beta glucans are special proteins with unique side-branching patterns that “fit” perfectly with cellular receptor sites that support your immune system, just like a key in a lock. Mushrooms also contain trace minerals, polysaccharides, amino acids and fiber that support your health by protecting against environmental stressors; supporting your detoxification process; and promoting healthy gut flora and optimal digestion, just to name a few of the known health benefits.
Orthopedics • Pediatrics • Hands • Sports • Balance Neurologic • Urinary incontinence/pelvic pain
4. Vitamin C: Recommended by Nobel Prize winner, Linus Pauling, vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant. Use a natural form such as acerola, which contains associated micronutrients. You can take several grams safely every day. We recommend at LEAST two Grams of vitamin C a day (that’s four 500 mg tablets daily). Avoid the orange juice route, which introduces too much sugar into your system.

5. Oregano Oil: The higher the carvacrol concentration, the more effective it is. Carvacrol is the most active antimicrobial agent in oregano oil. 6. Propolis: A bee resin and one of the most broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds in the world; propolis is also the richest source of caffeic acid and apigenin, two very important compounds that aid in immune response. 7. Tea made from a combination of elderflower, yarrow, boneset, linden, peppermint, and ginger: drink it hot and often for combating a cold or flu. It causes you to sweat, which is helpful for eradicating a virus from your system. 8. Olive leaf extract: Ancient Egyptians and Mediterranean cultures used it for a variety of health-promoting uses and it is widely known as a natural, non-toxic immune system builder. Remember that the flu vaccine only offers limited protection from respiratory illnesses during any season, and antibiotic treatment has NO role in the treatment, once illness occurs. The flu vaccine only protects, at best, against 10% of all the cold and flu viruses that linger during each season. Submitted by Michael B. Teiger, MD, FCCP of NEIHA located in West Hartford, CT. The Controversial Wonders of Virgin Coconut Oil Coconut oil is unique; it is composed predominantly of mediumchain fatty acids (MCFAs). It is the MCFAs in coconut oil that make it different from other oils and which give it its remarkable nutritional and medical properties. ~ Bruce Fife, ND, Coconut Cures (2005)
B
y now, you have likely heard about or experienced the wonders of virgin coconut oil (VCO). You may know it benefits your hair and skin, but did you know that it can destroy disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and has antiinflammatory properties? Though still controversial (especially because it is very high in fat and calories), a growing body of scientific evidence and expert opinion supports the use of VCO for medicinal purposes.
General Characteristics & Fat Composition VCO is: (1) made from fresh coconuts; (2) minimally exposed to a refining process involving low temperatures and no chemicals; (3) extracted by wet process, fermentation, refrigeration, mechanical process, or centrifuge; and (4) characterized by a distinctive but mild coconut flavor and aroma from its retention of its naturally occurring plant chemicals. The term ‘extra virgin,’ not always correctly used by manufacturers, indicates that the VCO is raw and thus processed without any heat. VCO comes in both liquid (hard at room temperature) and capsule forms, and a certified organic form is preferable. Refined coconut oil (RCO) is made from dried coconut meat known as copra, which has been bleached, treated to reduce potential bacteria and other contaminants that can develop from the drying process, exposed to high heat to remove the coconut flavor and smell, and possibly exposed to chemicals to maximize oil extraction. Partial hydrogenation of RCO produces trans fats. A mixture of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids comprise all oils. VCO is 92% saturated fat (approximately 12g/Tbsp), which mostly derives from animal products and is generally known to raise LDL cholesterol and clog arteries, and thus thought to undermine cardiovascular health. (American Heart Association, www.heart.org). However, the predominant saturated fat in VCO is made up of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which differ greatly from the long-chain fatty acids more commonly found in food. Since the beneficial medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in VCO, derived from its MCFAs, are more easily digested and more soluble in water, they readily cross cell membranes. VCO is also gentle on the digestive system because the liver immediately converts MCTs into energy without the need for pancreatic enzymes. VCO, which acts as an antioxidant and is thus very shelf-stable, consists of these MCTs: lauric acid (44-52%); myristic acid (1319%); palmitic acid (8-11%); capric acid (6-10%), and caprylic acid (5-9%). It also contains small amounts of the monounsaturated 22
Natural Nutmeg - October 2014
fatty acid oleic acid (5-8%), and the PUFA linoleic acid (approximately 2%). VCO contains no omega-3 fatty acids and is not rich in micronutrients, but does contain low amounts of Vitamins E and K, and iron.
Scientific Support for Medicinal Uses Although more research is needed, there is scientific support for using coconut oil to address various health conditions, including:
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Mary Newport, MD, reported her use of coconut oil to reverse her husband’s early onset AD in her 2008 book entitled, “What If There Was A Cure For Alzheimer’s Disease And No One Knew?” She explains that the body digests MCT oil differently from other fats. Rather than storing MCTs as fat, the liver converts them directly to ketone bodies, which the body uses for energy. Dr. Newport maintains that the administration of MCT oil, both oral and intravenous, creates circulating ketone bodies that the brain can use for energy in the presence or absence of the glucose it normally uses. This hyperketonemia also increases cerebral blood flow by 39% (Am J Physiol 1996). One in vitro 2014 study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggests support for Dr. Newport’s position. MCT oil [containing only capric (40%) and caprylic (60%) acids), rather than VCO, may be a better option in treating this disease, especially when combined with essential fatty acids such as those in fish oil.
Candidiasis/Systemic Yeast In a 2007 Nigerian in vitro study, researchers found that coconut oil performed as well as fluconazole in combating a range of candida species. (J Med Food 2007) However, some well-respected experts argue that the saturated fat in coconut oil, which feeds yeast, outweighs the antifungal benefit of the low amount of caprylic acid it contains.
Cardiovascular/Heart Disease Cholesterol (with age, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, weight, and gender) is only one marker for heart disease. According to Bruce Fife, ND (Fife), a leading expert on the health benefits of coconut, VCO decreases the risk of heart disease by raising HDL and thus lowering the Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio, the more accurate risk indicator over LDL or Total Cholesterol alone. In a 2004 rat study, researchers found that, compared to RCO, VCO obtained by wet process lowered total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, LDL, and VLDL, and increased HDL, in serum and tissues. This ability may be due to VCO’s biologically active
polyphenols, plant chemicals that work as antioxidants to protect cells from free radical damage. (Clin Biochem 2004)
Crohn’s Disease (CD) According to Leo Galland, MD, FACP, FACN, Foundation for Integrated Medicine, liquid diets that most effectively induce remission of CD are either very low in fat or supply one-third of their dietary fat in the form of MCTs. MCT oil may have a direct anti-inflammatory effect on this serious digestive ailment. (Report: Integrative Therapies for Inflammatory Bowel Disease) Dr. Galland’s hypothesis is supported by one mouse study in which researchers concluded that VCO had anti-inflammatory activity comparable to aspirin. (The Philippine Journal of Internal Medicine, 2007.)
Diabetes Citing animal studies, nutrition journal reports, and testimonials, Fife maintains in Coconut Cures that the MCFAs in VCO improve the circulation and cardiovascular health in diabetics. He also urges VCO consumption because its MCFAs easily feed the cells without the need of insulin, and improve glucose tolerance and insulin secretion and sensitivity.
Weight Management Fife maintains that VCO promotes weight loss by satisfying hunger better than carbohydrates and proteins. This supposedly results in less food and calorie consumption. Others report that the MCTs in VCO are thermogenic; that they boost metabolism by increasing energy expenditure (fat burning) compared to the same amount of calories from other fats (Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord 2003). In one study, low-to-moderate daily intake of MCTs (15-30 grams, or 1-2 Tbsp) increased energy expenditure by 5%, totaling about 120 kcal/day. (Eur J Clin Nutr 1996.)
Other Medicinal Uses Due to its antimicrobial and anti-viral activity, VCO may help treat: (1) ear infections (place a couple of drops in each ear canal); (2) rashes/skin irritations, including shingles and cold sores/herpes (especially mixed with oregano oil, DMSO, colloidal silver, and/or aloe); (3) fungal and/or yeast infections (e.g., athlete’s foot, thrush, ringworm); (4) bug bites and stings; (5) vaginal dryness and perineal
massage (i.e., during pregnancy); and (6) head lice (coconut oil with anise was found to be nearly twice as effective as prescription permethrin lotion, Eur J Pediatr 2010).
Numerous Non-Medical Uses Cooking Fatty acids are composed of long chains of carbon atoms linked to each other. Each carbon atom is also attached to a pair of hydrogen (H) atoms. A fat is ‘saturated’ when it holds all the H atoms it possibly can. A monounsaturated fatty acid is missing one pair of H atoms, while a polyunsaturated fatty acid is missing two or more pairs. Mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids are more chemically reactive/unstable than saturated fatty acids. Excessively heating more unstable fats can transform them into harmful compounds such as trans fats and free radicals. RCO has a smoking point of 450°F, while VCO has a lower smoking point of 350°F.
Beauty Benefits VCO is a beauty aid with many uses: (1) makeup remover; (2) facial cleanser; (3) body scrub/exfoliator (combine with equal parts organic cane sugar); (4) gentle facial scrub/exfoliator (mix with baking soda, or oatmeal); (5) shaving lotion and shaving cut antiseptic; (6) face/body moisturizer (whip to create a fluffy moisturizer that stays soft and spreadable); (7) fine line and wrinkle reducer; (8) eye and cuticle creams; (9) deodorant (mix with baking soda and arrow root powder); (10) hot bath soak; (11) homemade soap and lip balm; (12) fluoride-free toothpaste (mix with baking soda and essential oils); (13) insect repellant [mix with neem, tea tree oil, lemon balm, vanilla extract, and/or essential oils (catnip, peppermint, rosemary, citronella)].
Hair
Coconut oil is especially beneficial for more porous hair types (e.g., African, chemically treated), and scalp problems (e.g., dandruff). This hydrophobic oil inhibits the penetration of water into the hair strands, which would otherwise cause the cuticle, or surface of the hair shaft, to rise, making it prone to damage and breakage. Also, a small amount penetrates deeper into the hair shaft during washing.

Oral Health Joseph Mercola, DO, recommends coconut oil for oil pulling to reduce plaque buildup and tooth decay, and thus reduce dental visits. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic medical practice that involves rinsing the mouth with the oil like a mouthwash for at least 15-20 minutes, and then spitting it out in a container (it can clog drains) without any swallowing. Ideally performed before breakfast (but any time is effective), this process allows the oil to “pull out” bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other debris. It cleanses, detoxifies, and heals both the mouth and body by combating chronic inflammation and Candida and Streptococcus infections.
Household Uses Non-toxic coconut oil can be used for a number of household tasks, including: (1) cleaning/conditioning/sanitizing wooden cutting boards and furniture; (2) polishing metal; (3) moisturizing/softening leather; (4) lubricating hinges, sticky mechanisms, and instrument strings; (5) cleaning hands and paint brushes; (6) cleaning/sanitizing mouth guards; (7) cleansing and adding a glossy finish to indoor plants; and (8) removing chewing gum. While some evidence indicates that VCO confers health benefits, other evidence from well-established and respected organizations indicates that excessive intake of saturated fats from tropical oils can have adverse health effects. Given this controversy, it would be best to ingest VCO in moderation absent the guidance of a holistic healthcare practitioner. 1 The statements in this article have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Important Birthdays...If You’re Over 50
By Lawrence Ford, AIF
W
hen was the last time you heard someone say they were 50 ½ years old? I love the raw passion for life in kids when they tell me their age and include halves or three quarters. But most children stop saying “and-a-half” somewhere around age 12. And when we get to be adults many of us lose the excitement of getting older so we don’t like to announce our age, never mind brag that we are closer to our next birthday by adding fractions. The loss of this childlike spirit is sad and is part of a deeper problem that relates to our society’s addiction to a youthful appearance and a fear of death. Let’s look at some very practical benefits of getting older and how the value of “and-a-half” birthdays starts making a comeback. Starting at age 50, several birthdays and “half-birthdays” are critical to understand because they can have a significant effect on your financial well-being.
With life expectancy expanding each year, 50 is no longer old! And it is never too late to save for retirement. Take advantage of this gift from the government and stash away as much as you can.
Age 59½ People are able to start making withdrawals from qualified retirement plans without incurring a 10% federal income-tax penalty. This applies to people who have contributed to IRAs and employer-sponsored plans, such as 401(k), 403(b) plans. Keep in mind that distributions from traditional IRAs, 401(k) plans, and other employer-sponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income. Because 59½ marks a time when you can begin to withdraw your qualified money out without a penalty, it is also a time to start seriously thinking about how long you
have to work and how long your money is going to last in retirement. The way you manage and invest your money after age 50 may not be the same as when you are in the accumulation or savings time in your life. So get yourself a check up and don’t delay. Demand that any financial advisor can demonstrate his/her training, skills, and experience in handling clients during the retirement income years. Just because someone advises on investing during your working and saving years does not automatically qualify him or her to help you during your retirement years. Make sure you use a retirement income specialist for your retirement income years.
Age 62 At age 62 workers are able to draw Social Security retirement benefits. However, if a person continues to work, those benefits
Age 50 When you reach age 50 it is time to celebrate because the government gives you your first present. People in certain qualified retirement plans are able to begin making annual catch-up contributions in addition to their normal contributions. Those who participate in 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans can contribute an additional $5,500 per year in 2014. Those who participate in Simple IRA or Simple 401(k) plans can make a catch-up contribution of up to $2,500 in 2014. And those who participate in traditional IRAs can set aside an additional $1,000 a year. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

can be reduced. The Social Security Administration will deduct $1 in benefits for each $2 an individual earns above an annual limit. In 2014, the income limit is $15,480 (up from $15,120 in 2013). Between ages 65 and 67, individuals become eligible to receive 100% of their Social Security benefit. The age varies, depending on birth year. Individuals born in 1955, for example, become eligible to receive 100% of their benefits when they reach age 66 years and 2 months. Those born in 1960 or later need to reach age 67 before they’ll become eligible to receive full benefits. So before you make a decision, do your homework.
Age 65 At age 65, individuals can qualify for Medicare. The Social Security Administration recommends applying three months before reaching age 65. It’s important to note that if you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in

Medicare Part A (hospitalization) and Part B (medical insurance) without an additional application.
Age 70½ So if you have saved well and have money left in your retirement plans; this is the date that the government shows up to your doorstep and puts out their hand to get back some of that money they let you keep. At age 70½, participants must begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional IRAs and qualified retirement plans, such as 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans. RMDs are based on your account balance and life expectancy.
Being Conscious of Where You Are in Life Understanding key birthdays may help you better prepare for certain retirement income and benefits. Perhaps more importantly, knowing key birthdays can help you avoid penalties that may be imposed if you miss the date. So start bragging about your age and all these great things that can happen to you after 50 by announcing your age in “and a half’s”. Go tell someone your age and add the half. Watch the reaction and yours as well. Live to your fullest. Have fun. Stop feeling and acting so old. Instead, start feeling blessed to have made it to this point and revive some of that child in you. And get good, sound advice from qualified professionals for your financial life. Remember when you used to fall and skin your knees and bounce right back up after a few tears before playing again? Well you don’t bounce back up like you used to and your investments may not have the luxury of time like they did when you were younger. If you were smart enough to stay invested after the market correction of 2008, it may have taken you until last year to just get even again. David Whyte, a great contemporary poet and really cool authentic spiritual leader, says, “to know what season of life you are in is one of the wisest and most important things you can do.” Invest wisely for your season. Be aware of the important birthdays. Be an awakened financial warrior. Control your money so it does not control you. Cancer Prevention through Diet
M
ost diseases have an underlying etiology involving inflammation. Conditions like cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, asthma, allergies, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes can be made worse or better by a person’s diet and lifestyle. Mindfulness, beliefs, and choices can make a difference in an outcome. There is a relationship between stress (both physical and emotional), which can lead to inflammatory cytokine release. Stress is associated with decreased sleep and increased body mass, stimulated by release of the stress hormone cortisol, and both of which are causes of inflammation. Excessive consumption, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease can leave a person more open to cancer. An anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle can help to prevent many diseases. The goal of cancer prevention is continued wellness after a diagnosis. The more health conscious, positive and stress free a person is, the better their chance of living cancer free.
Cancer and Your Diet A diet that is clean and free of toxins is essential. A diet that is non-GMO and organic is optimal. You want to eat foods such as nuts, seeds, wild-caught fish, and a small amount of poultry. Minimize meat consumption; instead have plenty of vegetables every day. Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, cabbage and broccoli, are best for creating a curative environment for breast cancer. Leafy greens, sprouts, legumes and non-sweet fruits like tart cherry juice are best. The most healthful grains are millet, quinoa, amaranth, teff, and buckwheat (hulled). Fruit is not recommended because it’s high in sugar, which feeds cancer. Maple syrup, agave, high-fructose corn syrup and maltose xylitol are examples of high-sugar foods that are to be avoided. Research has shown the benefits of eating a plant-based diet rich in vitamins. Inflammation is the adaptive immune response to tissue injury or infection that plays a central role in metabolism in a variety of organisms. Inflammation is a major cause of inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Several sites have established links between chronic low-level inflammation and many types of cancer, including lymphoma, prostate, ovarian, pancreatic, colorectal, and lung. There are several mechanisms by which inflammation may cause carcinogens.
Six Spices that Prevent Cancer Cumin: reduces the spread of cancer cells. Oregano: has anticancer properties to stop the growth of malignant cancerous cells. Ginger: is prized for healing qualities that help reduce cholesterol. Ginger contains carotenoids that help retard cancer progression. In addition this compound has been shown to be able to reduce the size of cancerous tumors by 50%, and benefits can be enjoyed by ingesting a few threads. Cinnamon: should be mixed into liquid, one-half teaspoon daily, to enjoy its cancer reducing benefits. Cinnamon reduces the growth of tumors. Reishi, maitake and crimini mushrooms: are full of antioxidants and can be found in stores or in supplement form.

From Worry to Well-Being
By Lisa Zaccheo
M
aybe it’s there first thing when you wake up in the morning. Your eyes open and this wave of anxiety flows over you before you’re even fully awake. You watch the news and the world appears to be on the brink of destruction and you wonder how you’re going to navigate through it all. Or it keeps you up at night, your mind racing with all the things that could go wrong. If this sounds like you, read on because there is help. You can shift from worry to well-being, out of fear and into freedom. Fear comes in many flavors. Worry, anxiety, phobias, compulsive thoughts, difficulty concentrating, insecurity, procrastination, insomnia and anger. When you think about it, these feelings are limiting at best and in many cases downright imprisoning. They prevent us from enjoying our days and having the freedom to explore ourselves and life to the fullest.
Once that seed of belief is planted it begins to take root and grows through the years creating a strong internal fear. “If I’m not good enough, people won’t like me, won’t love me, might leave me, I’ll be alone, I might not survive,” etc. These thoughts or beliefs produce the emotion of fear which affects us mentally and emotionally as well as taking a toll on our physical health. External seeds of fear come from traumatic experiences, our own birth being one of them. Imagine living in a nice, warm, quiet, cozy, dark room for nine months only to be thrown, without any forewarning or preparation, into bright lights, loud noises, and the cold hands of strangers prodding and pricking. Confusing and scary. The trauma of being left alone as a baby. Even the trauma of a nightmare. External seeds of fear can get planted in many, many differ-
ent moments. Once that seed of fear gets planted it grows into a sapling and then into tree. Just as trees are nearly impossible to just pull out of the ground, it’s very difficult for us to pull out our trees of fear. We may be able to understand our fear by talking to a friend or therapist but the feelings remain. We may be able to temporarily numb the fear with food, alcohol, recreational drugs, or prescription medications, but the fear is still very much there below the surface.
Working with the Mind So what can we do about it? Thankfully, we all have this truly amazing part of our minds called the subconscious. The subconscious mind is the emotional mind. In the state of hypnosis, the subconscious can literally “see” the fear as energy in our system.
Seeds of Fear So, where does the fear come from? Having worked with thousands of clients struggling with various forms of fear over the years, in my opinion, there are two primary sources or seeds of fear. The internal seed is the deep seated belief “I am not good enough.” This belief can get planted in our systems at any time— even before we’re born. For example, if we are an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy, at the subconscious level, we assume that something must be wrong with us if we are not wanted. Seeds can get planted later in life by parents or teachers who focus on the things we do wrong instead of the things we do right, or when we compare ourselves to an older sibling or playmate and think we should be able to do what they’re doing, not realizing how much more life experience they’ve had. www.NaturalNutmeg.com
29
Once the fear is found, the subconscious mind isolates the seed of that fear and works to understand how the seed got planted. When it finds the source of the seed, it releases it, which allows the balance of the fear energy to follow. When the fear energy has been released the system is able to rebalance and return to a state of well-being. If you struggle with fear in one form or another, why not use the part of your mind that is designed to help you, quickly, (typically within three to five sessions), safely, easily and naturally? SPECIAL NOTE: In order to work on diagnosed anxiety, a referral from either your primary care physician or your psychiatrist or psychologist is required.
Testimonials I’ve realized something (or rather someone pointed this out to me). I am not anxious when I wake up in the morning! I am not full of a horrible feeling in my gut. I no longer have that sensation and now do not dread going into work. Thank you Lisa, thank you so very much; I feel free for the first time in my life truly free. - Rose from Farmington How do you thank a person who has literally saved your life? I’m not sure there are even words. Living with depression and anxiety is like being trapped inside your own mind with demons gnawing on your self esteem. And you, Lisa, in your great kindness and patience, have freed me from it. On behalf of my infinitely precious children who now have a calm, compassionate mother, on behalf of my sweet husband who now has a put-together, happy wife and on behalf of myself whose life you have completely changed, I thank you from the depth of my being. - Orli from Waterbury Lisa Zaccheo is the owner and lead hypnotist at Mind Matters Hypnosis Centers in Avon, Guilford and North Branford CT. Kitchen Table Medicine: Eat Your Herbs!
H
erbs used in cooking impart flavor to your food and boost your health at the same time! Herbal medicine has been used for health benefits long before recorded history and has been carried through different traditional medicine practices. Even many medications prescribed today are made from plant extracts. Naturopathic physicians recommend using herbs in a variety of ways; in teas, as tinctures (liquid extracts of herbs), as topical salves, and (one of our favorite ways) in food! Here’s a list of health-benefiting herbs with recommendations for eating, drinking and even smelling them!
Immune Boosting Garlic The antibacterial properties of garlic were employed during World War One when garlic juice was used as an antiseptic to clean wounds. Currently, wound care is not as simple as crushing garlic into a wound, but does have its place in medicine as an antimicrobial/antifungal. Eating garlic is a great way to improve the immune system and fight off infections. The health enhancement effects of garlic come from the compound allicin that is released when garlic is crushed and cut. The best way to get the goody out of your garlic is by crushing and cutting the garlic bulb and using it right away to ensure freshness and to preserve the immune supportive quality. Try this delicious garlic salad dressing recipe:
Anti-Stress Lavender Rudolph Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, said lavender is for “negative states of the soul.” It is true; lavender can ease stress and tension through its actions on the nervous system. Known for its unmistakable aroma, lavender is often used in beauty products and perfumes, but can also be eaten in a variety of ways. One of my favorite drinks is lavender-steeped lemonade. • Small handful of freshly picked and rinsed lavender flowers • 1 cup white organic granulated sugar (sugar substitutes can be used) • 2 cups of boiling water for the infusion • 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 cups or more of cold water • Ice Pick the lavender flowers from the stems, place in glass bowl with sugar and smash together. Pour 2 cups boiling water over sugar and lavender flowers, stir and dissolve the sugar. Add the additional 2 cups of water and lemon juice with ice. Now sit and de-stress while you enjoy the relaxing benefits of lavender!
Anti-nausea Ginger
• 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped finely • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard • 2 Tbs lemon juice • 1 tsp sea salt • 1/4 cup olive oil
Ginger is a well known herb for stomach upset and digestive support. Fresh ginger can look intimidating with its knobby appearance, but once peeled and added to a dish this dull looking herb takes form! From motion sickness to over eating and even nausea of pregnancy, ginger is a gentle way to ease a sour stomach. Sipping ginger tea or enjoying a ginger chew can offer immediate relief.
Add ingredients to blender, blend until smooth, and drizzle on a bed of greens
Easy at home Ginger Tea Recipe:
Memory Enhancement
• 4 cups boiling water • 1.5-2-inch piece of fresh ginger root- peeled and sliced thin • Honey or lemon to taste
“Rosemary is for remembrance,” is a phrase made popular by William Shakespeare in Hamlet. Rosemary is a delicious way to spice up a baked potato but can also improve the quality of your memory. Studies have shown that smelling oil of rosemary can increase alertness and boost memory recall. Try smelling the essential oil of rosemary prior to an exam or an event in which memory needs to be sharp. It just may boost your recall and increase focus!
Peel and slice ginger root and add to mug of boiling hot water. Cover the mug and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain the ginger from the tea and add honey or lemon to taste if wanted, then enjoy!

Anti-inflammatory Turmeric This herb is well-known as a spice added to Indian curries. It also gives mustards a deep yellow coloring. Turmeric root is similar to ginger root in appearance, with a thick outer lightbrown skin. Once the skin is peeled, inside is the bright orange flesh of the turmeric root. This orange flesh is known for several health benefits, especially for its anti-inflammatory ability. Turmeric, with its potent ability to decrease inflammation, is often used in blends to reduce the pain of arthritic conditions. This herb is a great addition to soups, sauces and even lattes! Herbs often offer natural, effective, noninvasive ways to improve health. It’s important to seek the expertise of a practitioner who specializes in herbals, as herbs can interact with medications and can have side effects. When Smaller is Better and Less is More Garden of Light and the Importance of Your Local Health Food Store
E
Your Local Market
ven though it came highly recommended by my doctor, I wasn’t ready for it. I walked through the door and was immediately disenchanted. Where were the mile-high mounds of fresh fruits, the gorgeous graphics, and the rows of registers? The words “Can I help you?” came from a slim man in a hooded sweatshirt. He seemed so sincere that I was tempted to tell him my entire health history, but I caught myself and simply stated, “My doctor suggested I get probiotics.” The man introduced me to the supplements aisle, pointed to a few alternatives, then guided me to the refrigerated section, explaining probiotics differences, pros, cons, and alternatives all the way. I bought a bottle of refrigerated probiotics, along with jars of the best pickled beets (I kid you not) and sauerkraut on the planet.
A Love Affair And so began my love affair with a store called Garden of Light Natural Foods. In my countless visits to Garden of Light since that first foray years ago, I’ve continued my conversation with the sincere and knowledgeable man who first greeted me, whose name turned out to be Tim Smulders, whose title turned out to be manager, and at whose knee I figuratively sit whenever I get the chance. You might think that a love affair with a store is strange, but I am not alone. Another customer, Sonia Dinshaw, who was a vegan for 20 years and now follows a Paleo diet, told me, “I love that they have a great Paleo section, but the big reason I go there is because of the people. Tim is full of knowledge and willing to share. And they have a huge selection of gluten-free products, raw milk, kombucha, eggs, and snacks for the kids with no high-fructose corn syrup, no bleached sugar, no GMOs, no sulphur
dioxide. I love their fresh, local, organic veggies, their raw local honey and the “Real Pickles” brand Kimchi & Cabbage. Even if I could find all this elsewhere, I couldn’t find the same people. They yell, ‘Hey Sonja, I’ll carry your groceries to your car,’ or ‘Try this,’ – they’re excited to share with me. I feel like they really care.” Melissa Martin (Owner of Anew You Skincare and Wellness Center in Avon) is another fan. “I send my clients there!” she exclaimed, when I told her I was working on this article. “I love their organic produce and their healthy snacks. It’s small and friendly, and I know if I have a question I can easily get an answer. Their produce is organic and always fresh, and I love their healthy snacks – especially the organic, coconut-covered dates!”
Helping Customers is Our Job Tim and his two right-hand women, Holly and Lori, tirelessly search for real food, prep the produce, stock the shelves, and help customers learn, one-on-one, what’s best for them. “The foods are as close to the farm as possible,” says Tim. “People
By Deb Percival are asking for them, and we’ve got them. Another advantage of the store size is that everything turns over quickly – everything is fresh. Honest food and helping customers – that’s our real job.” Holly, who is Assistant Manager, handles groceries, dairy, and the frozen foods. She’s a huge help to customers looking to learn more about Gluten Free, Paleo, Raw, Vegetarian, and Vegan diets, and has adhered to a vegan diet for 13 years herself.
Three Organic Produce Deliveries a Week Lori, who once worked at (grab your hankies) Cheese & Stuff, handles the store’s fresh produce. She believes pesticides can cause many illnesses, and she’s a stickler about the produce section; everything is organic, local when possible, and she gets fresh deliveries three times a week! She uses some of the produce to make the vegan, wheat-free soup that is offered daily at lunchtime. Tim, Holly and Lori all tell me that the people they help the most don’t fall into any

one health or diet category—the ones who learn the most are the ones with a passion for improving their diet, whether it’s because of family health history, a diagnosis, because their doctor sent them, because they have a young family and they care about what they serve…or because they read Natural Nutmeg!
Cutting Statins Dave Zucker, husband of Assistant Manager Anissa Zucker, has even cut his statin prescription with the help of GOL staff and his doctor, and is hoping that by following an anti-inflammatory, low-glycemic diet he’ll be able to get off statins entirely. “We’ve really been able to fine-tune his diet for his specific chemistry,” says Anissa. Dave said after just three months, his numbers are much better – his statin prescription is half of what it was, and he feels stronger. “I was tired and had muscle weakness, but it came on gradually and I didn’t realize how bad it was until I cut the statins and felt so much better!” So many GOL customers make positive changes – here are just 10 to consider making on your road to better health!

Natural Nutmeg - October 2014
10 Foods for Better Health and YUM factors! 1. “Organic India” brand Chyawanprash; one yummy teaspoonful three times a week. 2. Fermented, unpasteurized, organic, “Real Pickles” brand raw beets, sauerkraut, and pickles (“fermented” might not sound tasty, but these products are in fact delicious and full of probiotics and Vitamin K). 3. Weston Price (“Green Pastures”) fermented cod liver oils, which are neither heated nor processed. (I have this in capsules – I find the gel to be the opposite of yummy.) Tim uses the gel, and calls it “gold.” 4. Kombucha by the gallon. Five flavors! 5. Berkshire Mountain Bakery bread, which is cold-milled (minimizing oxidation), and made with sourdough (making it more readily digestible). 6. Organic, unpasteurized almonds from Sicily. 7. Grind-your-own almond- and peanut-butters. 8. Raw milk from Baldwin Brook Farm in Canterbury, CT and raw cheese from Meadow Valley Farm in Indiana. 9. All the produce is organic, so there’s no chance of cross-contamination from nonorganic. 10. Happy Life Organic Coffee. “We work hard to make the best options – both in terms of foods and brands – available to people,” says Tim. “Ideally, everyone could buy everything they needed directly from farms, but that’s impractical if not impossible; we strive to make Garden of Light a one-stop shop that’s easy-to-navigate and that sells as much ‘real food’ as possible.”
Honest Food He looks me in the eye and says, “It’s very hard to find real food. The whole foods industry is slowly getting worse. It has let customers down. What we’re doing here is taking healthy shopping to the next level. People who know what clean health food is can find it here. I ask then about supplements. Obviously the store would make money on supplements, but he says, “Only take what you need – and if you’re eating right you shouldn’t need many. Our soils are deficient; therefore our foods are deficient so most people probably need some.”
Lucky Enough Now that I know more about food, I see the size of the store as a huge advantage. I can get everything I need in fifteen minutes (on a big shopping trip) and if I just need a few things in a hurry I can be in and out in a few minutes. You know the Irish saying, “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough”? I submit that, Irish or not, if you’re lucky enough to have a local health food store, you’re lucky enough. Support your local health food store – the store that supports your health! Garden of Light Natural Foods is a natural food grocery store, opened in 1991. It is managed by Tim Smulders. It offers grocery items, baked goods, body-care products, produce, bulk items and pet-care products, to name a few. Its deli case is stocked full of vegetarian meals, sandwiches, deli salads, prepared meals and more. Its produce department offers only fresh, high-quality, certified organic fruits and vegetables.
Antlers at Vail:
Winter or Summer Your Home Away From Home
I
f the drive from Denver through the awe-inspiring mountain range wasn’t breathtaking enough, wait until you get to the mountainside town of Vail. Have I just stepped into a beautiful Switzerland village? That’s the first thought I had driving into the center of town and arriving at Antlers at Vail hotel and condominiums set on beautiful Gore Creek, in the Lionshead area facing Vail Mountain. Winter…summer…or really any time of year; this is the resort to be at for the ultimate in convenience. Ranging from studio suites to four bedroom lodging options, all condo rentals include a full kitchen, private balcony, free high-speed internet access and plenty of room to spread out. If you’re spending a week on the mountain, having your own “home away from home” is a luxury. Warm up with a crackling fire in your living room fireplace and take in the stunning vistas from your private balcony. After a long day of skiing, instead of worrying about where to go for dinner, enjoy the convenience of a fully furnished kitchen. If you happen to come in the summer, you’ll love the picturesque pool area carefully placed to maximize exposure to Colorado’s famous sunshine, which includes a heated outdoor pool, two spacious hot-tubs, comfortable heated walk-ways and heated changing rooms supplied with pool towels. The Antlers at Vail Condominiums were first built in 1972, at the same time that most of Lionshead was developed. It didn’t take long however, before the Antlers distinguished itself from the myriad of other condominium properties. It’s always been an important part of their culture that owners and employees alike feel like the Antlers is their family. A number of the Vail condominiums here have been handed down from parents to children, and about a third of the families who owned units in 1980 still call the Antlers home.
What’s really amazing is that their ecofriendly initiatives are virtually endless. “Our whole team enjoys brainstorming additional ways to save energy and reduce our impact on the planet, and we continue to implement ideas as they’re suggested,” says General Manager Rob LeVine. I was happy to see custom, refillable, shower and soap containers in the bathroom! As a result, the Antlers has eliminated the 20,000 or so two-ounce containers that were either thrown away or recycled every year. Half used bar soaps is also a thing of the past. They also recently bought fourteen solar panels which are installed in a two acre array down by the Rifle airport. The power they generate is fed into the grid of their electric utility and they see the credit on the monthly electric bill, without ever having to handle the installation or maintenance of the panels. The ozone generator allows the hotel laundry to use cooler water temperatures saving considerable energy. Phosphate-free detergent and other biodegradable products are used in that laundry, thus generating far less pollution than other similar operations. The list goes on and on including: EV Plug – The Antlers at Vail has a level 1 electric car charging outlet in their garage, and also offers access to two level 2 (240v) EV Plugs (J1772). Bus Passes – As a way to encourage employees to use ECO transit rather than drive, the Antlers pays the entire cost of the bus pass for every employee who will use it. Beverage Bar – Complimentary ceramic mugs are provided at the coffee bar in the lobby, encouraging guests to use those rather www.NaturalNutmeg.com

than disposable paper cups. The same area dispenses filtered water, with a sign encouraging guests to refill their water bottles there, rather than buy more plastic bottles. Automatic Light Switches – The lights in most of the common areas (restrooms, business center, etc) are on motion detectors that turn them off automatically after ten minutes of inactivity. L.E.D. Lighting – They have replaced and will continue to replace standard light bulbs with more expensive and efficient L.E.D. fixtures. On Site Housing – They provide on-site housing for nine employees (almost 25% of the staff) significantly reducing vehicle trips to and from the property. Smart Landscape Sprinkler Clock – The system automatically knows not only when to water, but how MUCH to water. Sure, it senses the amount of moisture in the ground like some other systems, but is also electronically “hip” to the forecast. Even if the ground is dry, if there’s a 70% chance of rain LATER in the day, the sprinklers don’t kick on. As a result of all these efforts and more, the Antlers, is now one of the first businesses in Vail to earn the “Actively Green 2015” certification, as designated by Sustainable Travel International (STI). And, they are also one of the first lodging properties in Vail to receive the Trip Advisor Green Leaders certification. Situated in an envious position on the banks of Gore Creek, Antlers is just steps from restaurants, galleries, shops, a free Vail town shuttle and the Lionshead Gondola. In the summer, when we visited, you can take the Eagle Bahn gondola up to the top of the mountain and participate in all of the Adventure Ridge activities ranging from zip-lining to hiking to ropes courses – or just enjoy the view!
