PUBLISHER'SLETTER

F

all is here and the change of seasons is always bittersweet for me. I’m a summer girl for sure and I hate to see summer end, but now that I live in Naples during the winter I’ve started to enjoy all of the wonderful things autumn brings to Connecticut. I love the gorgeous foliage, pumpkin beer, a chance to wear cowboy boots and scarves, warm days and cool nights, and of course my favorite holiday falls in October – Halloween! Change is inevitable – that’s for sure, no matter how much we may resist it. But, change for many brings elements of fear. Sometimes it may feel as if things are being ripped away from us even if it’s something we’ve asked for or have outgrown. As creatures of habit, we feel more comfortable when things stay the same and when we know what to expect, but that doesn’t allow for growth. In order for us to evolve, we must accept that change is necessary and we must look at it as a beneficial thing. We must learn to allow people and things to flow in and out of our lives without trying to hold on too tight. It’s holding on and resisting change that creates drama and causes us turmoil and pain. But the letting go part…that’s easier said than done, right? One of my favorite quotes by Richard Bach is this, “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.” If you can fully step in to the belief that all you have is what is in this present moment and begin to stop worrying about the future or replaying the past, then you will accept change gracefully and easily. I can think of a number of experiences in my life when I held on and resisted the flow and every time it caused me pain. From the death of my father to a broken engagement to leaving a job I loved, each time I would dwell on the “why” and evoke a deluge of pain and heartache. Instead of focusing on trying to figure out why this happened to us, wouldn’t it be better to ask, “How can I learn or benefit from this situation?” What doors are opening as a result of the loss? There are some amazing and deeply personal articles in this issue about how to accept change and loss. I feel they are so timely with all of the changes we’ve been dealing with over these last few months. Caroline Wetzel writes about how her health condition led her to her dream career. Sharon Sklar teaches us how she recovered from a breast cancer diagnosis and years of surgery and treatment. Our feature, written by Pat Heavren, is an incredible story about overcoming a life shattering accident. I’m so grateful to all of our writers for their willingness to share their personal stories. I hope you will find wisdom and peace through these articles. In Health and Happiness,

Low-Normal Vitamin D is the Perfect Storm for our Immune System

V

itamin D has been a cornerstone of health and immune function outside of conventional medicine for decades. In more recent years, I have seen more patients having their Vitamin D levels tested by their conventional physicians yet, with a broad range that is considered “normal”, many people are still walking around with sub-optimal Vitamin D levels. The current pandemic is the perfect storm for our immune systems. The existence of the virus itself is a concern; but decreased exercise, decreased socialization, increased stress, and changes in diet and routines have lowered our defenses. We need all the help we can get and these “low-normal” Vitamin D levels are not helping. A recent article published on JAMA Network showed that in a group of 489 patients, those with low Vitamin D levels were shown to have a 1.77 times greater risk of testing positive for Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Optimal Vitamin D levels should fall between 50 and 70 ng/ml. However, the low end of the conventional normal range begins at 30. Your doctor may have found your levels to be ranging in the very low 30’s and sent you on your way with a “normal” result. A 2008 article in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology evaluated the impact of Vitamin D on bone mineral density (BMD), lower extremity function, dental health, risk of falls, admission to nursing homes, fractures, cancer prevention and incident hypertension. Levels of 75 ng/ml were found to improve outcomes in all areas with optimal cancer prevention levels being upwards of 90-120 ng/ml.

While most individuals can maintain improved levels of Vitamin D by supplementing with 1000-5000 IU of liquid Vitamin D3, there are a few important things to note. First, Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin meaning you need to consume with a healthy fat source when taking your supplement to improve absorption. Consuming Vitamin D supplements on an empty stomach may not be as effective. Second, know your Vitamin D levels. Now is the perfect time to get your levels tested and consult a naturopathic doctor who has the expertise to help you optimize your Vitamin D levels and absorption. Dr. Katy Firisin is an expert in gut health and healing of chronic conditions. She is a naturopathic doctor and medical director at Coastal Natural Medicine in Southport, Connecticut. Autumn is a Time to Turn Inward and Reflect

T

he Medicine Wheel represents our wholeness. It is a (w) holistic approach to being, indeed a way toward balance. The Wheel characterizes the time of season, the time of day, and the stages of our lives. In very simplistic terms describing the directions of the Wheel: • East represents springtime, morning, infancy, childhood. East is the spiritual self, light coming into the world, ability to see far ahead. Animal symbols are eagle and hawk. Southeast represents a transition time, sunrise to noontime, place of adolescence. • South represents summer, noontime, emotional self, early 20’s-30’s. It is about discernment, right relationship to others, right relationship to self, a place of growth and family. Animal symbols are turtle, cougar, cat, coyote, mouse. Southwest represents the transition time, afternoon, late 30’s – 45 years of age. It can be a more stabilized way of life. • West represents autumn, sunset, 50’s - 60’s, going into darkness, falling away of illusions, shedding that which no longer serves us. It is the place of the heart cave, the shadow self, self-nurture, attention to the body, our physical self. Animal symbols are black bear, salamander, snake, lizard, badger. • North represents winter, place of old age/death. It is the final release of illusion which allows clarity and wisdom. This is the place where spirit is released and becomes free. Animal symbols are white buffalo, snowy owl, elk, arctic fox, white wolf. Northwest is the transition to loss of illusions in life. Now is the time of Autumn, direction of the West. We turn inward, it is a time of evaluation of what we have harvested. What do we need to let go of? Pay attention to self and nurture. As the days grow shorter, we find that creativity can grow through writing and artistic pursuits. As we enter the darkness the light inside of us grows brighter. We continue to work toward balance with our spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental part of ourselves. Janice Juliano, MSW, LCSW is a life time student of Medicine Wheel Studies both in Connecticut and New Mexico. She is currently the Director of the Vision of The Red Barn in Durham. Epigenetics and Cutting Edge Treatment for Chronic Lyme Disease

E

pigenetics is the study of the effect of genes on cell actions and how those actions are affected by outside influences. This is the basis of the cutting-edge treatment called SOT (Supportive Oligonucleotide Technique). This treatment can help a variety of chronic infections such as Lyme disease, Chronic Epstein Barr, Herpes, CMV and others, in a way never before possible. A patient’s blood is sent to a lab which specializes in epigenetics. The lab identifies the genetic sequence (gene epitope) of the bacteria or virus present in the patient. Once they identify the genetic epitope of the target, that portion of the organisms’ cells which cause replication of the organism, they can create a treatment; the SOT molecule. By the intravenous administration of SOT, the genes of the infectious organism which promote replication of the organism can be turned off. That can stop the organism from multiplying, providing relief from the symptoms of chronic illness. This treatment specifically targets the genes of the organism and does not interact in any way with the person’s own cells, and therefore experience has shown SOT to be a very safe treatment. SOT treatment can be explained as using a “key” for a specific “lock”. The key is the SOT molecule which fits into the lock, the specific genetic sequence of the invading organism, therefore turning off the replication of the organism. After receiving an Intravenous SOT treatment, the SOT molecule interacts with the genetic makeup of the infectious organism on a 24/7 basis to stop the symptoms of chronic illness. This therapeutic action can last for months. If needed, SOT treatment may be administered three times within a year to achieve its maximum therapeutic effectiveness. Dr. Henry Sobo, MD is a member of A4M – The American Academy of Anti- Aging Medicine, The Age Management Medicine Group and
he is also a pioneer member of the new medical organization, the Clinical Peptide Society. For more information, www.drsobo.com. 203.348.8805. See ad on page 25.

Top 10 Breast Cancer Prevention Tips 1. Increase consumption of veggies: 8-10 servings per day. Get as many colors as possible especially greens. 2. Fiber up: 35g per day (veggies, fruits, beans, nuts, non-gluten grains). 3. Have 3-4 oz protein at every meal: think “clean” and “lean”. 4. Boost good fats/Omega 3’s: (olive, coconut, ghee, avocado, nuts, wild salmon, grass-fed beef) to decrease inflammation.

5. Kick the SUGAR habit: and avoid the other white stuff too – white flour, white rice, and pasta. Use fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth especially organic berries. Remember, sugar feeds cancer. 6. Watch your alcohol: one glass of wine a day increases your risk of breast cancer by 40%! Alcohol every day challenges your liver’s ability to metabolize your estrogen. Stick to three glasses of wine per week. 7. Go clean & green: avoid toxins where you can. Filter your water, eat organic food, buy non-toxic cleaning and body care products. Check out www.ewg.org to work on this. Toxins are hormone disrupters. 8. Check your Vitamin D level: 50-90 ng/ml is the current recommended range to prevent cancer. While you are at it, check your CRP which is a measure of inflammation. 9. Manage your stress better: you have to start somewhere so how about getting some help from an app? Check out HeadSpace. 10. Get great sleep: if you are not getting great sleep, take the time to figure out why. 11. Exercise: That’s ten, but we can’t forget to move every day and exercise! 4 Reasons Why You Need Floatation Therapy

elf-care can be summed up as the intentional actions you take to nourish yourself, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Self-care should always come first, and should never be looked at as a reward, but more a necessity for preventing disease and restoring health. The challenge many people face is how to fit a regular self-care practice into their days, weeks and months while juggling work, home, kids, school, and more. Scheduling time for yourself on a regular basis is the goal to counteract the stresses of everyday life. Imagine Float, greater Hartford’s first and only wellness center offers four non-invasive therapies that offer practical and time-efficient self-care options. Not only will they fit your schedule and budget, but they offer all the advantages of self-care to benefit both you and those around you. One of the most effective and efficient services to consider is floatation therapy.

Four Reasons to Float 1. Reduce sensory input: floatation allows you to reduce sensory input more than any other environment. A break from the office, school and your phone can help you refill your physical and emotional stores. You will have more energy to tackle the rest of your day. A much needed digital detox can go a long way. 2. Allow for physical decompression: a large amount of physical energy and much of our brain is dedicated to dealing with and fighting gravity. Whether we are standing, sitting or lying down; the ground, a chair or a mattress is pushing against us. When we lie in water, blood flows freely throughout your body. Not having to fight gravity lets your muscles, joints and bones get a well-deserved break. No longer focusing on supporting your weight or regulating temperature, your body has more resources to focus on healing and resting. 3. Reach a deeper meditative state: upon entering a float room, a strong sense of calmness and relaxation overcomes you. Your brain down-shifts to a much lower frequency producing theta brainwaves. This happens in that ‘between waking and sleeping’ state. In this theta state we experience unpredictable, unexpected, vivid dreamlike images. Sadly, we don’t experience this for very long because we tend to fall asleep or wake up. In a float room, you are able to “hang out” in the theta state and experience free association, sudden insight or inspire creative thoughts. 4. Increase your magnesium stores: according to World Health Organization statistics, as much as 75% of the U.S. adult population does not meet the recommended daily intake of magnesium. Regular float sessions allow magnesium to be easily absorbed through your skin. Magnesium calms your nervous system and reduces cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Magnesium can help alleviate symptoms related to depression and anxiety. Filling your magnesium stores can improve sleep, muscle recovery and calcium absorption to improve bone health and prevent osteoporosis. Make float therapy a staple in your self-care practice. Remember, the more frequently you float, you will reach deeper states of relaxation and recovery. Imagine Float can be found at 290 West Main Street/Route 44 (next to the Perfect Toy) in Avon. For more information, go to imaginefloat.com, or call 860.255.7771.

Softer Skin Than You’ve Had in Years

By Diane Hayden, PhD

I

had the pleasure of sitting down with Spa Director - Clinical Aesthetician, Laura Duffany, at The Spa at Litchfield Hills to talk about the hottest new trends in skincare! Laura has worked with plastic surgeons and medical doctors and has cultivated a strong and knowledgeable skincare team at the spa. Her favorite line is Skinceuticals for spa facials and daily skincare regime. The spa offers dermaplaning, medical grade peels and microdermabrasion among other skincare services. Dermaplaning One of the trendiest exfoliation options today is dermaplaning, which is performed using a sterile surgical scalpel (not as scary as it sounds!) to manually exfoliate dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, dead skin layer, and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz. This treatment results in ultra-smooth, fresh, and brighter skin. By removing that dead layer and hair from the face, the skin is evened out, and it helps with cell metabolism, which helps new skin come to the surface. Dermaplaning cleverly triggers the cell regeneration process and improves the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The effects of the procedure are instant, leaving your skin with a smooth appearance and a radiant glow. Along with the removal of fine hairs, it results in healthier skin that feels silkier. Why would you choose to have a dermaplaning treatment? Here are just a few of the benefits: • It painlessly exfoliates the stratum corneum to stimulate cellular turnover with no downtime. • It is a great option for clients with sensitive skin, Rosacea, and pregnant women who are looking for a deep exfoliation.

• It can be performed prior to treatments like facials, laser, and chemical peels for better product penetration. • It can be performed frequently every 4 weeks • It helps makeup go on smoother and more evenly. • It can help significantly lighten postinflammatory scars from past acne. • It does not make the hair grow back thicker and darker. What is a treatment like? After one, I was hooked. It was so relaxing I might have fallen asleep had I not been asking Laura a million questions for this article. She started with a citrus cleanse to remove oils from my face and followed that with a toner. This is used to increase the effectiveness of the dermaplaning. Then the procedure started with a tool that looked just like a tiny butter blade. After she ran the tool across my skin a few times I wasn’t concerned at all about how it would feel, as it felt just like lightly running your fingernail across your skin. Following the treatment, she then applied a Skinceuticals gel peel to break the bond of dead cellular buildup and oil/ pollution buildup on the skin. After this, Laura applied a Phyto-corrective mask with steam, B5 gel, an anti-aging eye cream and epidermal repair. The best part, however, was her signature face massage – WOW – I could have totally fallen asleep on the table. Lastly, Laura used the coolest device called a Jade Gua sha stone which is a natural facial lifting tool. These stones come in different shapes and helps with fine lines, circulation, puffiness, and dark circles. I was shocked to notice that my skin felt softer than it had in years – like many years! My skin tone was drastically improved and evened out. I immediately

noticed a softening of fine lines around my eyes, forehead and frown lines. That day I left feeling amazing, but the next day when I went to apply my normal makeup, I can’t tell you the difference I noticed. My makeup went on like butter and I literally felt airbrushed! After treatment, you do need to refrain from being in direct sunlight for a minimum of 48 hours and continual wearing of sunscreen is strongly advised. In addition, it is recommended to not use any products with glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, Retin A or Rentinol for at least 5 days, and no exfoliating for 3 days following the treatment (why would you need to?). You can return to your regular skincare routine thereafter and make sure to stay hydrated. One of the reasons skin can look dull and have buildup is from ongoing dehydration. The Spa is reintroducing Skin Care at The Spa with their new Regimen Renewal Skincare Experience! This exclusive skincare service includes a cleanse, tone, skin analysis with a skin scope, 5-minute scalp massage, relaxing essential oils, and at-home product and service recommendations. Also, try the Cryo Shell Mani + Pedi services which offer a combined nail service and cold therapy massage for your arms, hands, legs, and feet. Each glacial shell is carefully crafted with real seashells and porcelain to glide over the skin to soothe muscles, increase circulation, and boost collagen production. The Spa at Litchfield Hills truly has something for every guest whether it be relaxation, results, or both. They strive to offer organic product lines that are impactful and results oriented. Thank you, Diane!” ~ Jessica Peck-Lindsey MS, MAc, LAc, Peck’s Family Acupuncture “It was a pleasure to connect with Dr Diane Hayden at Natural Nutmeg online in discussing the cutting edge information on Traditional Chinese Medicine and COVID-19. Dr. Diane and Natural Nutmeg have been a great support in getting the holistic word out during this unusual time.” ~ Dr. Artemis Morris, ND, LAc, Artemis Wellness Center “Diane is a skilled interviewer. We were able to cover a lot of excellent information. We used the interview on both our social media and website. It’s a great informational tool to refer patients as well as potential patients to listen.” ~ Dr. Adam Breiner, ND, Breiner Whole-Body Health Center “Sharing EFT Tapping on Dr. Diane’s Lunch ’n Learn series was a highlight of my practice during this time of the Coronavirus! The importance of reducing stress to strengthen our immune system is truly imperative, so Thank You for broadening the alternative medicine message that you do so well.” ~ Karen St. Clair, EFT International ACAP “Diane was amazing to work with. She really understood my messaging and target audiences. Diane’s expertise in both wellness and marketing made me feel comfortable sharing my story through Natural Nutmeg’s webinar, as well as advertising.” ~ Dr Sherry Skyler Kelly, Licensed Psychologist

Exciting News in Nutrition Therapy for Crohn’s Disease

By Gina Barbetta MS, RD, CD-N & Katherine Vance RD, CNSC

E

merging evidence supports the use of a new diet therapy plan, the Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED), as a primary treatment of mild to moderate Crohn’s disease. In the last twenty years, research in diet and Crohn’s disease has increasingly implicated the Westernized diet or Standard American Diet (SAD) as a factor in the development of Crohn’s Disease (CD). Research on the role diet therapy has after diagnosis has been underwhelming. Diet is acknowledged as an adjunct therapy in the management of CD in adults and has mainly focused on eliminating foods to minimize symptoms during active disease flares. The reduction of insoluble fiber, concentrated sweets, high fat, caffeine/alcohol and sugar alcohols are frequently recommended. However, there is a need for a complete management strategy to tackle the complexity of CD, particularly in adults. Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is a treatment with one hundred percent of nutritional needs being provided by liquid formula with intake of no solid food for eight to twelve weeks. EEN is a well-established therapy that induces remission in up to 75-80% of children with newly diagnosed CD. The role of EEN in the management of adult patients with active CD is evolving. Although high-quality studies are limited, EEN may be as effective as corticosteroid therapy for induction of remission in adults with CD. EEN improves nutrition status, promotes bowel wall healing and favorably changes the gut microbiota in people with CD. In the US, EEN is used as a short-term treatment of CD and there is no strategy to maintain remission after successful EEN therapy. Compliance to an eight to twelve-week course of EEN can be challenging and has contributed to poorer results in adult studies. Research shows that a diet combination of partial calories from formula (PEN) and continued intake of the SAD does not induce remission in CD. Additionally, research shows return to SAD diet after remission using EEN quickly results in return of increased proinflammatory markers associated with active disease. The Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet (CDED), which combines a specific PEN formula with a defined whole food diet is a new therapy proven not only to induce disease remission but also for long term management of CD. The design of the CDED is to exclude components of the Western diet that negatively impact intestinal wall health and microbiome. Mandatory foods with soluble fiber and resistant starch are included to restore intestinal health and meet nutritional needs. The diet includes three phases with increasing food choices at each of the phases. The third phase allows 2 days with unrestricted intake of more liberal food choices thus making it appealing as a more sustainable diet treatment option. Emerging evidence supports the use of the CDED as a primary treatment strategy. One recent study showed that the CDED was better tolerated than EEN in children and adolescents with mild to moderate CD. Both diets were effective in inducing remission

by the sixth week. The CDED induced sustained remission in a significantly higher proportion of patients than EEN, and produced positive changes in the gut’s microbiome that are associated with remission. Another smaller study demonstrated that diet therapy based on the CDED may restore remission in adults and children who fail common medications know as biological therapies. These authors concluded that the use of dietary therapy, such as the CDED should be considered in this population. The diet should be undertaken only with the guidance of a Registered Dietitian – Nutritionist who is a certified trained CDED expert. This expert will guide you through the three phases, while ensuring adequate nutrient consumption to promote desired outcomes such as disease remission, growth, weight gain, increase in lean body mass, and nutrient repletion. Your CDED expert will continue to provide updated information to the IBD community as research continues on the use of this exciting new treatment option. Glutathione Glutathione is another substance that can help boost the immune system. It is the body’s most powerful antioxidant. Your body makes it from 3 amino acids, however, it is easily depleted. Oral Glutathione is not readily absorbed, so it can be difficult to supplement. One way to increase levels in the body is through a supplement of n-acetyl-cysteine, which is the rate limiting amino acid to make Glutathione in the body. The IV form of Glutathione is superior to oral for these reasons. Glutathione, like Vitamin C, combats oxidative stress from viral or bacterial illnesses. However, we are exposed daily to more oxidative stress; chemicals in the environment such as car exhaust, tap water, and chemicals in our food. Glutathione can help the body detoxify from these as well.

Boosting Your Immune System with IV Therapy By Carissa Fioritto, ND, RN

W

ith another cold and flu season upon us, many people are focused on ways to improve their health, specifically the immune system. There are some simple things to do to help make your body strong and able to withstand any illness that may come your way. Many of you are focusing on lifestyle factors, supplements, and reducing exposure to illnesses. However, there is another tool we can implement that can deliver some key nutrients for the immune system. This is intravenous (IV) therapy. It delivers nutrients straight to the bloodstream to be used immediately. This is used because you can dose nutrients higher and the body absorbs the nutrients much quicker than oral supplementation. There are two specific IV nutrients that can help replenish the body’s defense system to fight off viruses quicker and with less severity, Vitamin C and Glutathione. Vitamin C Most people know to take Vitamin C at the first sign of an illness. Typical dosages

GET LICENSED

are 500mg-1000mg. IV Vitamin C can go much higher without any digestive upset that may be caused by oral dosages. Dosages of 5 grams-15 grams IV are safe for the general population. That’s 5-15 times the amount that most people take by mouth! Doses can go higher depending on your specific health history. Vitamin C helps strengthen the first line of defense in the body, the white blood cells. It also helps activate natural killer (NK) cells to fight off foreign invaders. When one is sick, many free radicals are produced in fighting off any illness. Free radicals are also known as oxidative stress. When acutely ill, the body may use up to 20 grams of Vitamin C per day to quench the oxidative stress produced. While taking this vitamin is not 100% preventative to catching an illness, it can shorten the length and severity of an illness and get you back on your feet much sooner. Vitamin C also helps recycle other antioxidants in the body that can strengthen the defense system, such as Vitamin E and Glutathione.

When the body mounts an immune response, this creates inflammation (sometimes called a cytokine storm) from fighting the foreign substances. Glutathione helps calm down the cytokine storm and lowers this inflammation more rapidly, just like Vitamin C. It is important to do this so the body can detoxify these particles and the severity of the invasion is kept to a minimum. If a cytokine storm goes on too long with a viral infection, it can lead to serious side effects such as respiratory failure and cardiovascular involvement. Glutathione helps keep respiratory secretions thin so we can clear them from our tract. While Vitamin C is one nutrient that recycles Glutathione, there are many more that play a role as well. Many of the B vitamins as well as minerals like magnesium, zinc, and selenium are important to make sure we have a healthy supply of Glutathione. If someone is very depleted in many nutrients it is wise to do an IV nutrient formula or a multivitamin along with Glutathione to make sure the body can recycle it for a much more powerful effect. It can be hard to keep our immune system in tip top shape during cold and flu season. IV therapy can be another tool utilized to rapidly restore nutrient levels to give you the best chance at fighting off anything that may come your way. The 5 Points of Wellness That Are Essential for Longevity and Optimal Health

- Dr. Derrick DeSilva, MD

By Dr. Derrick DeSilva, MD

B

orn in Sri Lanka, I grew up in a family that considered natural medicine a way of life.

Whenever I had a test in school my grandmother would make me Gotu Kola and give that to me for breakfast with brown rice. Gotu Kola is a brain nutrient. Throughout my life, I have always taken vitamins and supplements, and I believe there is more than one way to treat chronic disease. My goal is to teach and introduce people to various modalities to prevent disease. With this mindset, I designed my medical practice around Five Points of Wellness that must be incorporated into your lifestyle for longevity and optimal health. Here is a brief description of each:

1

EXERCISE.

I tell all of my patients - I want you to do something every day for movement, and you have to enjoy it. If you don’t like going to the gym, don’t go to the gym. If you hate to run, don’t run. But find some type of exercise you love to do. Everybody can find 20 minutes per day. The sweet spot is 30-45 minutes of sustained heartrate for a sustained period of time. New data is showing you shouldn’t exercise for more than an hour, it causes too much damage to the body, creating a proinflammatory state. If you have not exercised for a long time, make sure you see your physician and get a check-up before starting an exercise program.

2

NUTRITION.

I love intermittent fasting and I fast for 16 hours per day. There are so many advantages including cellular cleaning, reduced insulin levels, increased metabolism and a host of other benefits. Find what works for you. If you don’t put the right fuel in your body, you’re not going to get the performance out. Whenever you open the refrigerator think, “Is this the right fuel for this body that does so many amazing things.” You instinctively know what you should and shouldn’t be eating. When you pull out ice cream at night, you know that’s really not a good idea even if you rationalize it. But most of all, everything in moderation.

3

SUPPLEMENTS.

What are the basic nutrients everyone needs? 1. Probiotic – 80% of your immune system resides in your intestines. Prepare yourself for if and when you are exposed to COVID-19. If your body is ready and you have the right the nutrients, you’re not going to wind up in the hospital, your body can fight off these invaders. All three of my grandchildren were started on probiotics from day one of birth. 2. Vitamin D – get your blood levels checked. I do extensive blood testing on all of my patients as well as genetic and hormone testing. Nutrients are the things that make the engine run. You would have to eat 12 bowls of spinach today to equal the concentration of 1 bowl in the 1930s. We’re really not able to get enough of the right nutrients from our food these days, so supplement where needed. Thirty years ago, when I started talking about probiotics and supplements, people would look at me like I was crazy. As time evolved, it’s amazing how many doctors from our hospital are now patients of mine.

4

BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES.

This is such an area of controversy. In the 1980s there was a study called WHI (Women’s Health Initiative) that destroyed our generation of women. They were told that if they used hormones they were going to get breast cancer. Our generation of women in their 60s either have never taken hormones or they were given synthetic hormones. What does bioidentical mean? It means the body recognizes what you’re taking because it’s identical biologically to what your body makes. If your body doesn’t recognize it, you’re going to react to it in a negative way. If your body knows what it is it utilizes it. Estrogen doesn’t cause breast cancer; the wrong form of estrogen causes breast disease. These hormones are needed in the body to protect your heart, your brain, your skin, your bones, and even your breast tissue. Using the right form of these hormones is the key and you will feel better. I’m 63 and I feel fantastic.

5

SPIRITUALITY.

This is my favorite. I have my patients do one good deed a day. It boosts your immune system by 40%. It also boosts the other person’s immune system along with every single person who witnesses it. That good deed is your spirit. We have got to change our spirit. Our genetics don’t change but our genes can get turned on or off to facilitate or prevent disease. We look at what is turning on and turning off your genes. This encompasses who you are, what you believe and what your attitude is. Do you have a good attitude? What is your outlook in life? I don’t agree with Billy Joel – the good don’t die young, they really don’t. Do one good deed a day, it’s so important for your physical and spiritual health, because it really can increase your longev-

ity if you’re a good person. Have a gratitude practice. Think of one thing daily that you’re thankful for. You will actually feel better. When I graduated from medical school, the Dean said, “Make a difference in one person’s life and you will be considered a success in medicine.” I never forgot that. So, my goal has always been to make that difference in one person’s life throughout my practice.

Programs are based on a unique approach to wellness. Data has shown that people are very comfortable in their own environment (their home). Based on this concept, I see people in their homes and go through the 5-point plan with them. Prior to the 2-hour session, a prescription for extensive lab and genetic testing is sent to the patient. The majority of the treatment plan is based on the genetics of the individual. Ask Dana: A Column Where Personal Finance & Life Intersect By Dana R. Mascalo CFP®, RLP®, AAMS®, C(k)P® “Dana, I’ve recently lost a spouse. On top of an overall feeling of mourning and loss, I find myself overwhelmed with the estate and financial matters and don’t know where to begin. Please help!”

F

irst and foremost, let me acknowledge that the loss of a spouse is one of the most difficult life events and transitions that can occur during our lifetimes. Assisting with estates and transitions has been a service I’ve provided for many years. If and when anyone you know experiences a loss like this, please take the extra time to be kind, compassionate, and express that you care. Being there, simply listening, and even the smallest acts of kindness can go a long way to assist in the healing process. I understand your feeling of overwhelm. The first thing I’d recommend is to pause each time you approach these matters, breathe, and take a moment to feel grounded. Sometimes in a state of overwhelm, feelings of uncertainty can be paralyzing. You may not be an expert on financial or estate matters, but rest assured that is OK. You can do this. Whether you enlist the help of your professional advisors, or you complete the process on your own, be open to the possibility that sorting all of this out might be easier than you anticipate and can actually be quite beneficial to you in the long run. As your awareness of financial and estate matters broadens with this experience, your confidence should get a boost and the state of overwhelm should decrease. Your initial major focus of time and energy should be on getting organized. It doesn’t matter where you are in the process, organization is key. It will help you effectively prioritize and track various tasks

that need to be completed and give you a master list where you can keep notes on progress and to-do’s. Start by identifying the executor of the will, which may be you. Also, reach out to your professional advisors, your accountant, estate attorney, or investment advisor. Ask them what services might be included to assist you in this process. Coveted financial advisors or planners typically include assistance with estate and financial matters along with the investment or planning services they provide. You could ask your attorney or accountant for a referral or anyone else you trust. My advice is to look for someone with advanced credentials like a CFP® professional, who also operates as a fiduciary so your best interests will be paramount. Have conversations with two or three so that you can select someone who truly cares, is experienced with estates and planning, and that fits with your personality and communication style. If you prefer to work alone, you will need to gather documentation and begin to make a list of assets, accounts, liabilities, insurance, and pensions. It may be difficult to find all of this at first depending on what was left as tracking or instruction. Account statements usually come monthly or quarterly and may be online. Accessing the primary email would be helpful to see if any accounts have electronic delivery. A copy of the tax return or phone call to the accountant may help identify where income is coming from too. For example, you may find dividend income listed there which may be from stock held direct at transfer agent or even exists in certificate form. Take time to make lists first of all items before tackling the reporting of the death for each account. This is because

each one may have a different administrative process and jumping into one may prevent you from finishing the master list. Social Security will need to be notified if the funeral home hasn’t assisted with that yet. Any home or other ongoing service contracts in the deceased’s name would need to be changed over if they will be continuing. Simply add these to the master list and work from there. Once everything is accounted for; prioritize your efforts. Insurance claims are typically very fast and could provide you (as the beneficiary) with cash faster than other account types. You will find that some assets will need to go through probate in order to be distributed according to the will. Examples of probate assets include accounts owned in single name, some business interests, and personal property. Non-probate assets may not be subject to the court and would be able to pass to the intended recipient by survivorship rights or beneficiary designations. Examples of non-probate assets include accounts with named beneficiaries like TODs, IRAs, 401ks, or insurance, jointly owned accounts and living trusts. As you move down the list, take notes as far as what is required to claim and process each account. Some will need more forms than others and some will require original copies of the death certificate. Take care and seek qualified tax and investment advice when it comes to investment related accounts. There is something called the step-up in basis which may allow for the cost basis to be updated in taxable accounts to the cost on the date of death. This could be advantageous from a tax perspective for the beneficiary and should not be overlooked. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

You may be uncertain about what to do with any current investments you may be inheriting or administering within the estate. A qualified financial advisor or planner would be able to help you with these kinds of questions. Moving forward, you can incorporate any newly inherited assets into your financial plan with careful consideration for your current circumstances, needs for income, tax situation, tolerance for risk, and the outlook for the stock market. On legal and probate administration questions, an estate attorney would best be able to provide advice and guidance. Some may help you with the final estate tax return down the road. The scope and complexity of actions needed in these areas will depend on your personal details and circumstances. It is my hope that this feedback is helpful and gives you a starting point for getting organized. If you feel that any of the topic areas are too complex, seeking outside advice from professionals when you need it for tax, legal, or financial advice can make the overall process easier and less stressful for you or anyone in a similar situation. Anti-Viral Nasal Spray May Prevent COVID-19 Infection

By Steven R. Frank

W

e wear masks to protect others from our exhaled droplets. These droplets may contain virus. It is a considerate gesture and quite helpful. But when the moisture of the droplet evaporates (relatively soon after being exhaled) the viral particles remain suspended in the air that we breathe and they are MUCH smaller than the holes in our masks. Some virus will get through as the masks are not sufficient protection for the wearer. What can we do to protect ourselves? Researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine found that the Covid-19 virus first attaches to the nasal passage ways and begins its replication there…in your nose. The particles are then shed from the colonies in your nose and are inhaled (aspirated) into your lungs where it proliferates and damages your body. “If the nose is the dominant initial site from which lung infections are seeded, then the widespread use of masks to protect the nasal passages, as well as any therapeutic strategies that reduce virus in the nose, such as nasal irrigation or antiviral nasal sprays, could be beneficial,” said Dr. Richard Boucher, a distinguished professor of medicine and the director of the Marsico Lung Institute and the UNC School of Medicine. In fact, the authors of the study proclaimed that the nose is the dominant site as it has more of the surface receptors (ACE2) to which the Covid-19 virus adheres. Understanding this progression is actually quite important. Knowing that the initial and dominant stage of the infection occurs in the nose makes it clear that an antiviral nasal spray could STOP the replication before it gets going.

Because of what they have learned in this landmark study, researchers at the UNC School of Medicine have endorsed the benefit of an antiviral nasal spray or nasal flushing in stopping Covid-19 infections. If only they had one… Our Sinus Relief product works as an antiviral nasal spray. Any Enhanced Aqueous Silver Colloid (EASC) will do. By using this spray regularly throughout the day to inhibit the replication of any virus that may have been inhaled, you can protect yourself from developing a further infection. That alone is huge! Moreover, one could use this EASC in a neti-pot (Super Neti Juice) in the evenings to further the inhibition of replication in hard-to-reach passages of the sinuses. But let’s take this a step further as well. At the end of each day, you can put 3 ml of an EASC such as Respiratory Relief, into a nebulizer and breathe it deep into your lungs through your nose and mouth. This will inhibit replication of any virus that has been aspirated into your lungs, mouth or is hiding in your sinuses. The researchers determined that the receptors (ACE2) to which the virus adheres, are far more abundant in the nasal passageways than in lower respiratory tissues. This speaks highly to the use of nebulized EASC as there will be a lower density of virus to inhibit in the lungs. The respiratory use of silver colloids is not new. It was extensively tested against M. tuberculosis and MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) nearly 15 years ago by Klearsen Corporation. Laboratory testing was done in the mycobacterium laboratory of National Jewish Hospital in Denver

Colorado and found to be extraordinarily effective. The efficacy and lack of side effects was far superior to any of the standard antibiotics. It was even patented (Pat. No. 6,749,597 and 6,454,754). Breathing the nebulized EASC through your nose and mouth allows you to protect another pathway that the researchers identified. It was noted during the study that virus can be aspirated from the mouth as well into the lungs. Of course, if you were to let the infection get too far before recognizing it, you might develop a sore throat. At that point, using the nebulizer every hour and spraying your throat with an EASC such as Throat Relief every 10 minutes will be necessary to end the viral infection and help your body return to health. I have personally used these techniques and monitored other infected individuals as they used them. All recoveries from the infection were in 1 to 2 days. The lingering tiredness lasted 5 to 7 days. I often wish that the world knew how to use silver colloids appropriately. Drinking a teaspoon won’t help. It will get systemically distributed throughout your entire body and the tissue density of silver in the areas where it is needed will be far too low to be of any antimicrobial value. Laboratory testing from 2005 has demonstrated that the number of silver particles per microbe is critical. Too few particles and you don’t inhibit replication. That is why you must put it ON the germs. Coating the infected tissues directly and repeatedly is the key to making any EASC effective. Additionally, brand-comparison testing demonstrated www.NaturalNutmeg.com

that some commercial types of colloids are not even very good (compounded 250 or 500 ppm colloids are lousy). I prefer a pure un-compounded silver colloid of 30 to 45 ppm. Colloids must be re-applied regularly to work well. The more you spray them, the better they work. You can safely do this all day long for weeks. But if you do it “once-in-a-while”…don’t expect results. While it is true that the virus can enter your body through your eyes and mouth, these paths are not as productive as they do not contain the surface receptors to support replication. These invaders can be handled by your immune system as they planktonically drift through the body looking for an attachment site; while you attack the main colonization in your nose. Following this protocol every day is not necessary. When you have been out in public, spray during the day and nebulize before bed. If you have come in contact with someone who is infected, do this for a couple of days. If you work in a hospital or in an environment with numerous infected patients, then by-all-means…do this daily. By using these techniques, you can protect yourself from infection and hasten the return to health if you are already infirm. Given how safe and effective this antimicrobial is (no one has EVER died or been injured from using a silver colloid), it’s a wonder why we haven’t seen it advocated under an “emergency use authorization”. But then…that’s the politics of medicine. If our FDA director had some experience in virology, respiratory infection or public health, he would end the pandemic with these techniques. From Anxiety to Inflammation to Pain Safe, Legal, Proven CBD/Hemp Oil By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition

H

ave you been suffering from a chronic health problem, but have found little relief from prescription medications or multiple natural remedies? If so, you may want to explore CBD (Cannabidiol) as a potential legal, safe remedy. While conferring with a practitioner experienced in its administration is recommended when using CBD, this basic primer is meant to provide sufficient information to help you determine whether trying this remedy may be right for you. What Is CBD? - Legality & Safety The endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the human body, discovered in the 1990s, is the biological basis for mind-body medicine. It regulates well-being, energy and pleasure, and maintains physiological equilibrium (homeostasis) when the body is confronted with injury or disease. Phytocannabinoids are chemical messengers that work like the body’s own endocannabinoids, neurotransmitters found throughout the nervous system that regulate the body’s major systems. CBD is one of over 100 phytocannabinoids found in hemp, a plant genetically distinct from, but related to, marijuana. Both CBD (more correctly referred to as hemp oil) and marijuana are from different varieties of the same plant species, Cannabis. While marijuana generally refers to the cultivated plant used as a psychotropic drug, hemp is cultivated from the subspecies Cannabis sativa for use in the production of various products, including nutritional supplements, foods and beverages, personal care products, and fabrics and textiles.

CBD is considered by expert scientists and physicians to have a wide scope of potential medical applications. Some of the factors that make it so exciting as a medical treatment are that: 1) it has almost no side effects, 2) it has very low risk of addiction, and 3) there is virtually no chance of lethal overdose. These are serious benefits when compared to opiates and other pharmaceuticals prescribed for medical conditions. ~ CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis, Leonard Leinow and Juliana Birnbaum (2017)

Federal law defines hemp and marijuana differently. If a plant contains 0.3% or less of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9THC, known as THC, the mind-altering component of Cannabis), the federal government considers it “industrial hemp” that can be legally formulated and sold as tinctures, gummies, capsules, and topical remedies. (Interestingly, CBD actually lowers THC’s psychotropic effect.) If, however, a plant contains more than .3% THC, it is considered marijuana, and even states that have legalized it sharply limit where and how it may be sold. CBD research has been relatively limited due to political bias against Cannabis, and researchers generally agree that more randomized controlled trials are warranted. In this article, CBD refers solely to industrial hemp or hemp oil.

Natural Nutmeg - October 2020

While CBD has very few known adverse effects (can include fatigue, diarrhea, and changes in appetite and weight), the right dose depends on multiple factors, including the condition being addressed and its stage or intensity, the individual’s biology, metabolism, and sensitivity to Cannabis, and how their ECS acclimates to the use of CBD over time. CBD should be used in low amounts initially and adjusted slowly until the desired effect is reached. In addition, there are certain contraindications and precautions that should be considered when ingesting CBD in any form. CBD temporarily alters the activity of cytochrome P450, a family of liver enzymes that metabolize both CBD and many widely-used pharmaceuticals, including steroids, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antibiotics, benzodiazepines, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, and anti-epileptics. CBD can either increase or decrease the breakdown of these and other drugs. Other precautions include: (1) CBD should not be mixed with alcohol; (2) due to its “bidirectional effect,” with excess dosing or due to individual body chemistry, CBD can over-stimulate the ECS, causing or exacerbating the adverse effects it normally relieves; and (3) since Cannabis readily absorbs heavy metals, pesticides, and other potentially harmful chemicals that may be in soil or water, it is important to buy only reputable CBD brands that regularly test their products for THC and contaminants, and/ or use organic hemp. CBD Effectiveness: Delivery Methods The effectiveness of CBD varies widely among individuals, in part based on delivery method, dose, the time of day it is administered, the treated condition and degree of advancement, and how much food has been consumed relative to the time of administration (because CBD is fat-soluble, its absorption increases greatly when taken with fatty food). Phytocannabinoids work better in whole plant extracts than in isolated, refined, or synthetic products. CO2 extraction, the most widely used method for removing CBD from hemp, produces a safe, pure product. As previously noted, CBD is available in multiple forms. Selection should take into account how quickly the CBD will take effect (onset), how long it will last in the system (duration), and bioavailability (how much will be absorbed). These guidelines generally apply for the most readily available, and thus most widely used, delivery methods: (1) Topical (salves/creams): Onset – 15 minutes, Duration – 2-4 hours, Bioavailability – N/A (local relief only; does not enter the bloodstream); (2) Ingestion (capsules/ chewed and swallowed gummies): Onset – 30 to 90 minutes, Duration – 6-8 hours, Bioavailability – 8-15% (slow, erratic absorption through the intestines; maximum plasma concentrations usually in 1-2 hours; can take 2-3 times/day); (3) Oral Mucous Membranes (oil based tinctures, gummies/lozenges dissolved in the mouth): Onset – 40-75 minutes (sublingual use – 30 seconds to 2 minutes), Duration – 6-8 hours, Bioavailability – 6-20% (can take up to 6 times/day). Science-Based Uses of CBD Drawn from relatively limited, preliminary scientific evidence, below is a short, alphabetized list of some of the more promising CBD applications when used responsibly according to the above guidelines. CBD also has widespread application in the treatment of veterinary health challenges.

1. Acne: CBD may help treat acne by combating inflammation and controlling sebaceous gland secretions. 2. Anxiety & Stress: Though calling for more clinical studies of the chronic effect of CBD, researchers reported in their 2015 review of multiple studies that preclinical evidence strongly supports it as an acute treatment for various anxiety disorders, including GAD, panic disorder, OCD, and PTSD. 3. Inflammation: Cannabinoids are well-established antiinflammatory agents. In one 2009 scientific review, the researchers maintain that they can reduce multiple disease symptoms, including those that arise in autoimmune disorders (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis), and certain cancers with inflammatory components. Other reviews maintain that future clinical studies are warranted before the exact role of CBD in treating inflammatory diseases can be determined. 4. Migraine Headaches: Studies to date have examined only the combined effect of CBD and THC on migraines. In a 2018 study review, the researchers concluded that the anticonvulsive, analgesic, antiemetic, and anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoids make CBD and THC promising remedies for both acute and prophylactic treatment of migraine pain. 5. Neurological Disorders: CBD has been proven to have anti-seizure, antipsychotic, neuroprotective, and antidepressant value. Initial research has demonstrated that CBD may reduce seizure frequency and be safe for children and young adults with highly treatment-resistant epilepsy. (However, some epilepsy study subjects have experienced adverse reactions, including convulsions and sleepiness/fatigue.) One very small 2014 study established that CBD controlled sleep difficulties in Parkinson’s patients. In a mini-review of the effect of CBD on Alzheimer’s disease in animal and test tube studies, researchers concluded that it reverses and prevents the development of cognitive deficits and is a valid candidate for novel Alzheimer’s therapies.

6. Pain: Studies on over one thousand patients have established that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters. One animal study found that oral CBD treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation. While determining the right dosage is critical, studies have demonstrated that, when used with opioid medication, CBD can reduce opioid dosing, tolerance buildup, and withdrawal severity. 7. Sleep Disorders: While the ECS helps regulate sleep and the body’s circadian rhythms, little is known of exactly how CBD combats sleeplessness. It is thought that CBD may promote healthy sleep patterns by addressing the causes of sleeplessness, including anxiety, pain, PTSD, and depression. The world of CBD research is a relatively new and exciting frontier. In addition to the above applications, initial evidence supports the value of further study of the use of CBD to address various other health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, obesity, IBS, immunity modulation, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, addiction, and cancer-related symptoms and treatment side effects. Given that CBD is considered safe and legal, personal exploration of CBD for these purposes may prove beneficial. See this full article online at www.naturalnutmeg.com. Anxiety and Depression: From Hopeless to Hopeful By Jaquel Patterson, ND

T

here continues to be an evergrowing incidence of anxiety and depression in the United States. One in ten individuals suffer from depression and 2-4% of the population suffer from anxiety. Depression accounts for over $23 billion in lost workdays and the diagnosis of depression has risen 47% for younger millennials and early generation Z, with less than 30% receiving treatment. The current pandemic only further exacerbates symptoms and increases the overwhelm many are feeling. Lifestyle and coping mechanisms are key during the pandemic. Unhealthy eating and alcohol consumption have increased significantly. Stress and overwhelm further deplete immune function and importance of social connection is key during this time in maintaining health.

24

Natural Nutmeg - October 2020

Where Do You Start? What are some of the causes and reasons that contribute to anxiety and depression? The most common causes are stressful life events, faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, medical problems, social media and external influences. You need to address all factors completely to get to the root cause and underlying reason for illness. A combination of therapy plus treatment is critical for good outcomes. Which Tests Should Be Run? There are many natural ways to successfully treat anxiety and depression and move someone from hopeless to hopeful. Naturopathic doctors and functional medicine providers have access to specialty tests to help further address the functioning of neurotransmitters and

adrenal glands. These functional tests help to identify areas that most need support in brain chemistry. For example, urinary neurotransmitter tests may identify functioning of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, GABA, and glutamate. This information helps to pinpoint which amino acids, herbals, and nutritional supplements can adequately improve symptoms and balance neurotransmitter functioning. Additionally, functional tests on adrenal gland functioning is also key, as chronic stress is often a persistent factor for an individual struggling with anxiety. Functional tests for the adrenal gland are able to identify imbalances in cortisol, melatonin, DHEA-S, and salivary IgA. This can help to pinpoint if there is excess cortisol levels or depletion and

can demonstrate if adrenal insufficiency is present. A naturopathic doctor can help to recommend supplements to regulate and balance adequate cortisol levels if deficient or in excess. When these factors are supplemented accordingly not only will lab values improve, but patients will report significant improvement in symptoms. Our office has done over a dozen case studies with use of neurotransmitter and cortisol testing that have shown both clinical and lab value improvements over the course of three months once supplements are used to support these areas of weakness. Supplements to Support Neurotransmitters One commonly known for depression and mood support is 5-HTP. 5-HTP contains l-trytophan which is a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is related to mood regulation and can help support both anxiety and depression. Serotonin is important for cognition, mood, and behavior. Low tryptophan levels may decrease both serotonin and melatonin levels as your body uses tryptophan for both. For this reason, it is often recommended before sleep, though many benefit by taking during the day to help improve overall function. B vitamins are critical to support, particularly B5 which supports the adrenal gland; B9, B12 and B6 help to support stress and anxiety levels. B vitamins work synergistically together and are often best taken as a complex. We expend B vitamins throughout the day as they help to support our energy cycle and they get depleted quickly with continued stress and anxiety. B vitamins can be consumed from dark leafy vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Supplementation of B vitamins may be necessary and the amount should be carefully recommended by an expert in integrative medicine.

Lifestyle Recommendations to Reduce Anxiety When I work with patients, I also recommend important lifestyle recommendations. Exercise produces endorphins that decrease stress and improve the ability to sleep. Meditation, breathing exercises and acupuncture help with anxiety and depression and are important to incorporate daily as they support long-term management of anxiety and depression. Some other helpful natural supports include teas like Passionflower tea, Holy Basil and Ginseng tea. These teas help to reduce stress and are adaptogens for the adrenal glands. They are gentle ways to support energy production in addition to helping balance stress and lead to lifelong positive change.

There are many nuances to managing both anxiety and depression for an individual. It is dependent on various factors that specialty testing can help to clearly identify. It is also dependent on genetic vulnerabilities, life experiences, and chemical imbalances. A comprehensive approach will lead to success in transitioning patients to a “hopeful” state. There isn’t a clear general answer based purely on disease condition and one needs to be evaluated carefully and monitored by a naturopathic doctor adept in working with patients who have anxiety and depression and skilled in use of herbs and nutritional supplements in conjunction with any medications. Can Common Symptoms Be a Sign of Type 2 Diabetes? By Denise A. Pancyrz

S

ymptoms are signs. Do you pay attention or ignore them? A symptom is a physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient. Have you noticed any of the following symptoms as you age? • Fatigue, frequently tired or have that foggy feeling • Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight • Broken sleep; having to urinate too often • Vision changes such as floaters, blurred vision, dark or empty spots These are common symptoms we tend to disregard and consider part of the aging process. Did you know that these symptoms can be a sign of diabetes? Fatigue Fatigue can be due to aging, a demanding schedule, a lack of proper rest, or a combination of these symptoms. It is also a sign of diabetes which is an energy problem. Glucose is not effectively moved from your bloodstream to your cells so it can be stored for energy. Weight Gain In essence, weight gain is an imbalance of consuming more calories than what your body needs versus how many calories you burn. Weight gain is the visual sign of current and future ill health. Millions of Americans struggle with weight gain due to insulin resistance leading to diabetes. A short-term diet may offer short-term weight loss. Addressing the imbalance of glucose and insulin requires

lifestyle changes. Please take note, with immediate weight loss, at any age, diabetes should be taken into consideration due to deficient insulin levels. Get tested as soon as possible. Frequent Urination Endless trips to the bathroom during the night can be due to a weakening bladder or prostate issue. With poorly managed diabetes, your kidneys will flush excess glucose from the blood and into your urine, increasing the frequency of your trips to the bathroom. Poorly managed diabetes can increase your risk of urinary tract infections. Vision Impairment Vision issues such as floaters and dark spots can be age related. Blurred vision can be due to pink eye, the development of cataracts or high blood pressure. Dark spots or strings, blurry or wavy vision can be a symptom of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is when blood vessels in the retina become damaged from long-term high glucose levels. Sudden vision changes should be addressed immediately. Skin Disorders Other symptoms such as itchy skin can go undiagnosed. Itchy skin and other skin disorders can be caused by digestive issues, food sensitivities and allergies. Did you know that these are symptoms that can be a sign of diabetes? Before I was diagnosed with diabetes, my skin was very itchy. I believed it was from dry skin due to cold weather while living in the Midwest. Hot Flashes Hot flashes can be a tricky symptom. I thought I was in perimenopause. No one suggested I get tested for diabetes. It seemed plausible, due to my age, that it was peri-

menopause. The resolution was balancing my blood glucose levels. The hot flashes and itchy skin went away. No creams, no salves, no medication for hot flashes. There are many more symptoms of diabetes that can go undiagnosed. As you notice changes in your physical or mental being, take note. Discuss with your physician if your symptom is the underlying reason for something much bigger. Consider the number of times you purchased over-the-counter treatments to attempt to resolve your symptom. It may seem surprising that one disease can be linked to so many symptoms. That is because diabetes is a systemic issue. Diabetes can affect you from head to toe. Avoid masking your symptoms and identify the underlying source of your issues. If diabetes is the root of your problem, the effects can be reversed naturally. You owe it to yourself to verify. Denise A. Pancyrz is a national diabetes reversal and holistic lifestyle coach, speaker, and best-selling author of The Virgin Diabetic, Reverse the Effects of Type 2 Diabetes, Reduce Medication, and Improve Your Glucose Levels, available on Amazon. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Denise was prescribed four daily insulin shots along with oral medication. After changing her protocol by learning to rest and preserve her pancreas, she was able to eliminate all medication and insulin, regaining her energy. Financial Self-Care: A Personal Reflection

By Caroline Wetzel, CFP®, CDFA®, AWMA®

I

will never forget that morning in the spring of 2016. It was around 5:30am and the sun was just beginning to cast bright beautiful rays through my window. As I got out of bed, I happened to glance at my pillow and noticed more than just a few stray strands of hair on my pillow. “That’s weird,” I thought. While I was used to my hair shedding in different seasons, there was more hair than I would have expected on my pillowcase. A short while later, as I rinsed out the conditioner at the end of my shower, my hands started to shake as I realized that sudsy water wasn’t the only thing seeping through my fingers and running down my back. As I stared at the pile of brown wispy locks building on the drain I gasped and knew that something different was going on with my body. By this time in my life, I already was aware of the importance of self-care. Prior to that life-changing spring morning, my husband and I had experienced several miscarriages in just over five years. While I had tried to numb the pain of losing the pregnancies initially through eating, I learned quickly that the only things that I gained from emotionally eating were unhealthy pounds and even more frustration. Healthier Ways to Manage Grief With guidance from specialists in western medicine and complementary modalities, I discovered new and healthier 28

Natural Nutmeg - October 2020

ways to manage grief, lose weight, and gain renewed hope. Through changes in diet, exercise, and activities as varied as acupuncture, meditation, mindfulness, drawing, writing, yoga, prayer, and (silent) retreats, I came to appreciate the dynamic and integrated nature of health. I learned first-hand that when it comes to health there are dimensions that we can control and there are elements that we cannot control or fully understand. I experienced the life-altering power that exists through self-care; I came to appreciate self-care as continuous connection with our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. As my new health condition in 2016 progressed rapidly, I quickly lost all my hair and was diagnosed with alopecia areata universalis. Thanks to the love of family and the self-care that had become second nature to me, I had the capacity to navigate this dramatic life change in authentic and relatively healthy ways. While some people with alopecia areata universalis choose to be bald in public, I aspired to create a look similar to my appearance before the condition set in fully. Thanks to the tip from a dear friend, I connected with a great wig shop and started sporting a slightly new hairdo. I spent hours researching makeup, watching online instructional videos, and learning how to apply fake eyelashes and draw on fake eyebrows. Over time, as I refined the art of literally putting on my face

every day, I offered prayers of gratefulness. While I could not articulate exactly what was happening, I knew that something was changing. While on the outside I looked almost the same; I worked for the same company, and I was involved with many of the same activities, on the inside I was going through a very real and raw process of reckoning and rebirth. Giving Birth to a New Life And now years later I am privileged to offer you this reflection. The multiple unforeseen experiences of loss beginning in 2010 gave birth to new life. When life did not happen according to any plan that my husband and I (unconsciously) had for our little family, through self-care we as a team let go of previously held expectations and aspirations that no longer resonated. And through letting go, I gained a renewed sense of personal purpose and professional direction. Ongoing self-care activities enabled me to acknowledge where I was on life’s journey. When I was at my lowest lows, I realized that I had choices: I could choose to stay there, or I could choose to stand up. I chose to stand up. Each day as I chose to stand up, I affirmed (again) what was important to me. Each day as I affirmed (again) what was important to me I acknowledged with greater conviction what I could control and what I could not control.

And, ultimately, over time, I accepted what I could not control and chose to own the aspects of life that I could influence. One thing that became clear for me through this extensive introspection, discovery, and discernment process was that I craved not only positively influencing my own future, but also using the gifts that I had been given to support others in owning their own life circumstances, making informed choices, and realizing their dreams. Transitioning to My Dream Career What could I, a seasoned global financial services professional who loved to be trusted by others to solve problems, do with this desire to positively influence both my own future as well as those around me? Beginning in early 2014, I started researching different career paths. Through deliberate financial decisions and job changes over several years, I transitioned from global corporate executive at a major financial services company to my dream career as a Certified Financial PlannerTM and Private Wealth Advisor. In 2017, shortly after I joined a small, independent team of professionals that I trust to offer financial planning, financial advisory, and investment management services, I used my own personal health experiences as professional inspiration. I expanded my definition of “self-care” to include financial health. In my opinion and experience, I define financial health as: • clarity around what you are doing with your finances, • comfort around why you are doing it, and,

have always had a fascination with lymphatic massage and the incredible power of how such a light touch can have such an impact on our health. Our lymphatic system is incredible and many people do not know how powerful it really is. The system helps make magical white blood cells called lymphocytes that produce antibodies which help build our body’s immune system and defend it against attacks from viruses, germs and bacteria. How Your Lymphatic System Gets Clogged During the recent pandemic, I was not as good to my body as I should have been, a lack of exercise and ingesting too many processed foods did not do me any favors. I started to notice that my feet and ankles were swelling by the end of the day. My poor posture and being at a desk all day was not helping. My lymphatic system was clogged and I knew exactly what I needed to do to correct it. I decided to make this a fun project and enlisted the help of my dear friend and coworker, Lead Instructor at Cortiva Institute, Sandy Cook. Sandy agreed to work on me while also making it a great learning moment for our students. Over the next five days, Sandy performed the slow, rhythmic light strokes of lymphatic massage and gave me a task list of things to do at home: drink more water, exercise, try dry brushing, and take hot and cold showers as well as watch what I was eating. I immediately noticed the benefits, more pep in my step, loss of several pounds of water weight, and I am sleeping better. It is making me more conscious of what I am exposing my body to daily.

How the Lymphatic System Works The lymphatic system is a crucial system in how our body fights off bacteria, viruses, and other things that can invade our bodies. The lymph vessels work to pick up fluids between the cell spaces in our bodies and help move them while neutralizing the waste and toxins present. The lymph also transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells so not only does it take away the bad, it brings in the good too. Have you ever sat on an airplane and noticed after a long flight that your feet and ankles are swollen? When our bodies do not move, it makes it harder for the lymph system to flow effectively because it does not have its own pump like the heart does and swelling can be a result. What is Lymphatic Massage? Lymphatic massage stimulates the body’s lymph vessels and gets the lymph moving more effectively. It is done with a lighter pressure and with circular motions in a rhythmic pattern. The lymph vessels lay just below our skin, if we go too deep in pressure, especially if there was an injury at that site, it can damage those vessels. Our natural instincts are to rub something hard when it hurts, and with an injury that can damage the lymph vessels and further impede the system from working properly and cause additional pain and swelling. That is why it is crucial for a licensed massage therapist to be the one performing this type of work. Training to be a massage therapist is not just learning about the muscles. At Cortiva we also train on the other body systems because they are all inter-related.

Something may hurt in one area, but upon investigation it may be something else that is causing the pain. This is often the case with the lymphatic system, a clogged system can manifest in ways that we would normally not imagine. Insomnia, depression, swelling, weight gain, chronic fatigue, sinus infections and even arthritis are all areas that can be helped with lymphatic massage. Our bodies are exposed to an astronomical amount of toxins on a daily basis; combine that with the tendency to sit for too long at our desks and a lack of exercise and it will impact our health. Our world has changed dramatically over the past few months. One thing that gives me hope is that massage therapists will be out there helping heal the world through the power of touch. Keeping our lymphatic systems working effectively helps our bodies fight off what they can and helps keep them strong. It is such a joy for me to see my students graduate and go out into this world knowing the impact they will be making. Submitted by Elisabeth Johnson. Sh*t Happens: Paradox, Perspective and Healing By Pat Heavren

W

hen a client, an artist, came to me suffering from PTSD after a terrible car accident, his life was shattered. To make matters worse, the experience provoked earlier traumas to rise back to the surface to the extent that all the ordeals merged into one solid state of suffering. No amount of talking about it was going to reorder his world or help him forget what happened. No amount of relaxation technique would enable him to let it go. I knew from the start that I needed to help him engage the memory of the event from another perspective. The Key to Restoring Health As he described the story of waking up bruised and broken, covered in bloodied fragments of what was once a windshield, I understood that I couldn’t support him in moving toward the new perspective without bringing along the old one in a repurposed form. He couldn’t leave the past behind, because it lived with him in the present. The same was true of the future he 32

longed for, the one free from the constantly recurring memories of the terrible upheavals he’d experienced. He couldn’t face his painful past in the present. He couldn’t move past the present pain into a pain-free future. Whether the focus is an individual, joint, or collective healing; the ability to embrace and hold contradictions and opposites is the key to restoring health and wellness. What gives us the ability to do that, to engage extreme hardship and all the associated feelings that we naturally want to reject? The answer is perspective. For my client, my listening was essential. He needed me to hear what he could not. He needed me to identify the opposite of what was present in his own words and story, then offer it back to him in a way that might allow him to make an ally of the incident that had become his enemy. He couldn’t paste a smiley face on a tragic picture, avoid his powerful feelings

and emotions, or make an intellectual leap to simply reframe in his mind the automobile accident he’d been through. Doing so, or even trying to, would only increase the chance of his thoughts continuing to intrude and his pain being recurrent, because he would be leaving something behind in the process. Every time we cut something off or out without repurposing it, it will chase us into the future, looking for our eventual attention in another circumstance. Finding a Fresh Perspective In order to turn this enemy into a friend, we had to find a way for him to have a fresh perspective of what was as it was, so something new could unfold, something that allowed him to integrate the horror of the experience in a digestible form. In my experience with so many others like him, I knew it had to come from the words in his own story. Ultimately, we had to tap his well-established nature as an artist, so he could use this new vision of “stained glass,” the bloodied windshield of

broader perspective. It needed to choose to engage all the “making” and “breaking” actions of his day-to-day life in such a way as to organize around the full spectrum of his experience. Inspiration vs. Criticism Most of us respond to the world within and around us with the perception that what comes to meet us in life is a mix of good things and bad, sorted by emotions and thoughts we endorse and others we avoid. As a result, our inner voice fluctuates between being a continual source of inspiration and an enduring inventory of criticism. We need both and respond accordingly. Very few of us, if any, live with a consciousness that doesn’t eventually develop an opinion, often followed by an investment of emotion that constructs a belief, about something being either good or bad. We’re constantly filtering our experience through inspiration and criticism, attachment or avoidance. It is so much a part of our nature that we can’t leave it behind. On the other hand, even though we long to live life in resplendent color, life also necessarily includes black and white on the artist’s palette. Creating Our Reality

his car, like a medieval artisan would. He needed to create a resplendent cathedral window from it; a new window of perspective. I had to help him embody that concept by creating an experience for him to explore. I began by offering him a mental picture of himself as a Gothic artisan and “traveled” with him on a creative adventure. Piece by piece—shard by shard—we put together the window of a new reality. He needed to bring his natural talent and ability to bear in an even greater way, one that transformed his feeling of being caught by the past and trapped in the feedback loop of the accident and its aftermath. In doing so, we weren’t leaving the judging mind behind. His recovery, as all healing is, was hinged on his ability to bring this metaphor into practical meaning, to piece his world back together as a work of art without separating any part of his experience in the process. The judging mind needed to be on board with this larger and

It’s popular in the healing world these days to talk about how we “create” our reality. It may be true that, in moments, we have a choice in how we respond to the circumstances we encounter and, to some degree, how we react to them. That is, when we’re not forced by primitive instincts into the perilous land of the fight/ flight/freeze response, the place where adrenaline and black-and-white thinking outperform the color palette with their Olympic best. When repeated, mantra-like, the phrase “we create our own reality” reveals our not-so-secret attachment to our own narrowed reality as the expression of the Great Mystery Above. Our kingdom come, our will be done; so we create it, so it shall be.

create what happens to us, if any at all. Religion and science might offer a glimpse into the big question of cause and effect: What causes one event to wreak havoc in our lives, while the result of another event is bliss? Is it karma? A memory imprint from past trauma or success? The devil made me do it? God blessed me? A projection of the collective human unconscious? Falling somewhere on a continuum between complete randomness on one end, in which nothing has a cause and everything is, in effect, an accident; all the way out to super-determinism, in which everything is pre-ordained, from the next word you read to the next thought that pops into your head? At least for now, there isn’t a single answer to any of those questions, unless we drop an anchor down to one particular belief to the exclusion of others, bobbing up and down on waves of understanding as they gently lift, then release us. Otherwise, any accounting of control over what happens to us remains a mystery, calling us to sail on and on to ever-new horizons with no end in sight. Maybe each experience of belief holds a part of a whole image. Then again, perhaps this picturing of belief-induality I create is, in itself, just one shard in an even more complex and beautiful stained-glass window as vast and endless as the ocean itself. We Are All Connected In the end, why my client wound up in an accident in the first place doesn’t much matter after the fact, though his response to it might go a long way in influencing his future. In that sense, maybe he can rely sometimes on his ability to “create” shifts when shit happens, but only in tiny moments that he, himself just one piece connected to a larger stained-glass window, cannot ever hope to harness as being solely his own creation.

Yet one has to wonder how much evidence really exists, whether scientific or belief-based, that suggests conscious choice alone plays a significant role in determining what happens to, around, or because of us. I’m suggesting that shifts happen (because of our perspective and response) when shit happens (because of circumstances beyond our control and influence).

We don’t often acknowledge that most things are out of our individual and direct conscious control. In our self-interest, we like to lay claim to the effects that turn out to be good and point the finger away from us to lay blame for the bad. This extends to our entire species and reflects our humancentric view, which might be near the root of the greatest question or mystery of all. Why do we actually think we operate independently from one another, as well as from nature?

It’s a moot point to speculate about how much ability, conscious, subconscious, or unconscious, we possess to

The problem is human perspective is innately blurred by this false separation. We act as if what we do does not affect www.NaturalNutmeg.com

33

our personal environment, family, friends, neighbors, community; and the ecology of the whole, trees, animals, plants, rocks, and all the elements. This either/or thinking carries over and distorts everything we experience as humans, from our individual health to relational wellbeing, from partnership to politics, from the tug and pull of honoring cultural diversity alongside the need for collective unity. When filtered through the persistent perspective of separation engendered by both sides of the fear and greed equation, even our concepts of what to do, why we do it, and how we coalesce the duality between good and bad become skewed. Which brings us to the truth about what we call “healing.” Healing is not the act of getting rid of one (bad) thing to gain another (good) thing. It isn’t about fixing something that is disconnected or broken. It isn’t about the recitation of what we want exclusive to what we’ve got. The first law of thermodynamics assures us that none of that is even possible. Rather, it tells us we operate in a closed system where a total amount of energy is always constant, though it

continually changes form. Nothing can be subtracted or added. Nothing is lost and nothing is found. Healing is simply returning to the embodied awareness of wholeness that always is. Shard by shard, piece by piece, we assemble our world. Perspective doesn’t eliminate pain, or what we call misfortune. Experiencing what we consider bad doesn’t mean we have cursed karma or have failed to do something, whether in the practical or spiritual realm, to prevent it. Shards of pain are part of the whole. An experiential shift in perspective is the tool that allows us to change, usually minus our intention to do so, the past and the future, opening the double doors of paradox onto a repurposed and refreshed reality when the pain of what is, in the present, is simply too much to bear. Until it isn’t. And until it is again, because shifts happen when shit happens and as we can all predict with absolute certainty, shit happens. The gift of pain is that it affords us the opportunity to transform a windshield that has suddenly shattered our lives into a dazzling stained-glass window at the top of a

spire in a Gothic cathedral. It points out to us with uncanny immediacy and precision where we are in a given moment on the arc of that resplendent mystery that has no resolution. Ultimately, it gives us perspective on the paradox of bringing the truths of our desperate need for healing together with no need for healing at all. I’ve Been Diagnosed with Breast Cancer, Now What?

By Sharon Sklar, Certified Advanced Rolfer

“Y

ou have breast cancer,” were words I never thought I would hear. That was almost fourteen years ago. I was a healthy, conscious, decades long pescatarian who was a wholistic practitioner with a long-standing Rolfing® practice. There was no history of breast cancer in my family so it just wasn’t on my radar. Was I going to die? Would I have to endure disfiguring surgery? Would I need to go through chemotherapy? Radiation? Who would be with me? My four-year relationship had just broken up two months before. He moved out, I was alone. It started with my yearly mammogram, then a revisit for more pictures and finally an ultrasound that declared there was an issue. I thought about three women I knew who previously had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The three were not acquainted but in their searching for answers they were similar. They chose the “alternative” route of treatment, nothing on the traditional allopathic path; no surgery, no chemo, no radiation. Each took many supplements, had many treatments from various wholistic practitioners, they practiced meditation, did dietary cleanses and one worked with a Shaman. After prolonged valient battles, each of those women died. I called a breast surgeon I had met a few years before when I accompanied my mom on a “breast scare” appointment. This woman doctor was kind and personable, chatty but professional, answered all of our questions, and gave us a lot of information. She then told my mom to go home and forget about it. What grace, what compassion, what a stand this doctor took

for my frightened mother as she squelched my mom’s fears and sent her home with a resounding clean bill of health. I knew she was the doctor for me. All things happen for a reason. I was a shell of myself, feeling loss, sadness and grief from a broken heart and now had to deal with cancer and my own mortality. The rest was a fast blur; the MRI and other tests, the surgery date, the prep, dealing with my own fears. This amazing, devoted surgeon assured me that all would be fine. I decided to trust the process and trust her with my life and my future. I was clear I wanted to live, thrive and continue on my journey in this life. I wasn’t finished.

My oncologist treated me with respect for what I knew, how I participated in my treatments and for how I saw the world. He advised me after the chemo to have a yearlong treatment with a new drug that had no side effects and would be infused every three weeks for that next full year. Only thing was, after the last of eight chemo treatments, after the thirty-three radiation sessions, I felt worse and worse instead of better and better. Six months into this year of infusions I was weaker and more uncomfortable. I looked up that drug on the internet and found, about two hundred articles into my search, a list of possible side effects. I had them all.

Along with having to choose traditional treatments or rely on more natural, alternative treatments which I wholeheartedly believed in thus far in my life, I had to face many obstacles and medical complications. My surgeon was prepared after the initial lumpectomy to implant a small device for a five-day radiation cycle. This new treatment could not be done because to all of our surprise, the cancer had gone into my lymph nodes requiring me to undergo chemotherapy. There were no short cuts now.

I made it through that year of infusions, then said no to any more drugs. My doctor wanted me on another drug for 5 years to assure my estrogen levels would stay low. I refused, saying I needed to get my body back. Perhaps we could talk about it in months to come. My naturopathic doctor told me she could put me on supplements that would do the same thing, but with no ill effects. I negotiated with my oncologist, a year to try the new supplement regime and then a retest to check my hormone levels. We shook hands on it.

Enduring losing my hair, being weakened from the cumulative effects of eight rounds of chemo, having an infection around my heart that required a few days in the hospital, and then having thirty-three rounds of radiation set me up to question my wholistic beliefs and accept the traditional medical model. I no longer was familiar with myself, my own psyche and my belief systems. I had to trust my doctors and let them take the lead.

A year later I was symptom-free, felt my body again, tests revealed great levels and that’s where I am today…almost fourteen years later. My convictions of doing medical model treatment and less conventional treatments have me healthier than ever, with more to do in life than I have hours in my day. My journey, with many complications, racked up four breast surgeries. I endured four months of chemo, radiation www.NaturalNutmeg.com

for six weeks, a two year-long heart issue, I became pre-diabetic and I was completely disoriented from my body. My journey also led me to pay more attention to my inner wisdom, to create a team of professionals who would listen to me and include me in my treatment plan. I had a deeper appreciation for traditional medicine. Together we fought the good fight and paved the way for a stellar future filled with excellent health, humility, compassion and the best darn Pet Therapy Team at Hartford Hospital’s Gray Cancer Center. I chose to give back to the place that gave me back my life. For the past nine years, my dogs and I visit every other Wednesday, visiting with those in the same rooms, with all the tubes and all the inner chaos and questions. Our job is to bring a smile to their faces and give some assurance that there is life after cancer.

How Expressive Arts Encourage and Promote the Power of Healing By Christina Nieves DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, Chief Nurse Administrator, Director BSN, MSN Programs

A

s I was growing up I often assisted my aging grandmother and through that experience I somehow knew I would ultimately choose a career in science that would allow me to continue helping people. Still, I longed for a life that also incorporated the arts and always found artistic discipline to be a vehicle of self-expression, empowering us to reveal our hidden truths to ourselves and the world. Creative Connections While pursuing a career as a family nurse practitioner, I continued to create deeply personal art and I aspired to show others the power that art has in healing. During a nursing conference, I presented a series of sculptures depicting psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ theory on death and dying. I noticed a woman wandering the room and continually circling back to my display. When we had the opportunity to speak privately, she asked, “How did you know?” and shared that my sculptures spoke to her on a spiritual level. The woman further disclosed that she identified with each “face” that my sculptures were conveying — depression, anger, bargaining, and acceptance — and she divulged to me the tragic story of her husband’s death. For me, this moment exemplified the true power of expressive arts, and, in the connection that I shared with a complete stranger, the captivating effect of storytelling through something tangible. An Education in Expressive Arts In the 1990’s, there was limited research on art as a healing modality, so I began connecting with others in the field. In 2002, on the journey to my doctoral degree, I earned a certificate as an Expressive Arts Facilitator. Facilitating expressive art workshops for more than 18 years has taught me to pay attention to:

• My impressions, thoughts, and images: An introspective instruction, art is often a metaphor in which the artist holds the key to its understanding. • My particular choice of art: Each modality of art holds a specific value and significance. If I work with poetry, I can express myself through imagery. If I work with fibers, I can work out intricacies through the story I am weaving. Whatever the method, the best part about expressive art is that there is no wrong way to tell your story. • Our collective everyday experience: This taught me to be present, to embrace life, and to engage with the people I encounter every day. • Healthcare facilities that incorporate the use of the arts: Innovative hospitals integrate rotating galleries on their walls and utilize the skills of visual artists, musicians, dancers, and storytellers to engage patients, staff, and the public. • Expressive arts research: Pay attention to institutions like Goodwin University that focus on curricula that incorporate the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, promoting art and other activities to instruct, inspire, and heal. The last decade has brought about quality research on the benefits of art. We now know that in some cases, art can reduce pain and symptoms associated with different diseases. We also know that art can improve mood, reduce depression and anxiety, and increase the overall quality of life. I have had the honor of standing before people who were no strangers to hardship. They were pupils and patients with purpose: cancer and domestic violence survivors, HIV patients, incarcerated individuals, and those facing homelessness,

addiction, and physical and mental illness. And I watched as producing art had a profound impact on them all. Unless we are pursuing art as a career, most of us stop “playing” with art before we reach adolescence. What a pleasant surprise to discover, as adults, how enjoyable and therapeutic self-expression can be! In a community setting, many find the arts a unifying activity that reveals commonalities unknown before participating in the art workshops. Through expressive art, people can capture the otherwise unspeakable, exposing bits and pieces of themselves at their choosing. When we engage in outward expression, we show our inner selves, as if to proudly say, “I am here, and this is me.” Christina Nieves DNP, APRN, FNP-BC educates and encourages evidence-based expression as a means to mend. As a visual/performing artist and nurse, Christina appreciates that the nursing field allows students to bring their interests into the profession. Christina has worked in nursing education for more than 20 years as a director, program developer, and instructor in online, on-campus, and clinical capacities in undergraduate and graduate levels. An author, award recipient, judge, and peerreviewer; Christina attests that Goodwin University’s dedicated nursing faculty and their commitment to students are exceptional, and she is honored to be the program director for Goodwin’s BSN, MSN, and Family Nurse Practitioner programs. By Megan Moriarty, Certified Hypnotherapist

D

o you ever feel like you are in a war against yourself to create the change that you desire? Do you want to lose weight but can’t resist the sweets? Do you want to kick a bad habit but have tried countless times with no luck? From a Hypnotherapist’s standpoint, this is not your fault. This inner conflict happens because your conscious desires are fighting against your subconscious programming. What most people don’t know is that your conscious mind, where all of your thinking takes place, makes up only 12% of your mind; the other 88% is made up of your subconscious mind.

Winning the Inner Battle

When I first tell clients this they are baffled. How could their 60,000+ daily thoughts make up only 12% of their brainpower? It all comes back to automatic behaviors and thought patterns. You live the majority of your life on autopilot. You do not have to put a lot of thought into performing daily tasks like driving your car or performing your morning routine. These are automatic; you do them without thinking. All of your automatic behaviors and thoughts are stored in your subconscious mind. This deep part of your mind also stores your knowns. As humans, we are motivated towards what we already know because it is usually an easier option that takes less energy. You are more likely to take your usual route to work rather than taking a new direction every drive. Automatic behavior and having stored knowns do make life easier. If you had to relearn routine tasks or what you liked and disliked daily, you would not be able to function efficiently. However, we often have stored information in our subconscious mind that no longer serves us. This is where the 12% of your mind (conscious mind) fights the more powerful 88% (subconscious mind). If you are fighting someone seven times more powerful than you, do you think you have a high chance of winning? An example of this 12% vs. 88% battle is a woman who grew up with parents who gave her a chocolate treat whenever she was upset, sad or lonely. Throughout her childhood, she loved these treats because in the moment they gave her joy and a sense of relief. After repeating

38

Natural Nutmeg - October 2020

this pattern for years, it became a part of her subconscious programming without her even knowing it. She now automatically goes for the sweets whenever she is experiencing a negative emotion. Growing up, this behavior didn’t affect her weight, but now that she’s older the chocolate treats seem to be the main culprit for her weight gain. She consciously wants to lose weight, be healthier, and feel more attractive, but she can’t stop eating sweets no matter what she does! This inner battle drives her crazy and she feels like she has no willpower and negatively judges herself. The vicious cycle of losing a few pounds just to put them back on keeps her trapped in a frustrating reality.

There is an easy solution to this inner battle. It is natural, pain-free and highly effective. Hypnosis is the ultimate state for creating permanent change at a subconscious level. In this relaxed, peaceful state the subconscious mind easily accepts new, positive suggestions that align with your conscious desires. Once the positive suggestions are accepted, the battle is resolved. 100% of your mind is on board with your goals and deepest desires. This kicks willpower out of the equation and makes positive change easy and automatic. It is time to end the war against yourself and utilize the power of hypnosis to become the happiest, healthiest version of you.

Can you relate this scenario in any area of your life? Have you ever had a deep desire to create a positive change but felt like you were your own worst enemy? In one way or another, this story relates to all of my Hypnotherapy clients. Most people want to expand and develop themselves but are struggling against deep, subconscious programming that they are not even aware.
