Natural Support for Environmental Allergies HistaEze™ is designed to help support and counteract some of the main symptoms and immune reactions associated with environmental allergies. Featuring Tinofend®, a patented and clinically researched extract derived from the plant tinospora cordifolia, that has been used since the early 1900’s in Ayurvedic medicine for its immunomodulating action. Tinofend® contains a proprietary complex of polysaccharides and polyphenols. Human clinical research on Tinofend® has shown it to be helpful for maintaining healthy immune response by addressing issues related to allergen resistance.1

How does Tinofend work? Tinofend® addresses the cause of allergies by increasing the number of phagocytic white blood cells, including macrophages, which help consume and rid the body of allergens, and by reducing the number of eosinophils (cells that contain histamine).

Additional important ingredients include: • Quercetin, nettle leaf and vitamin C, which have been historically used throughout the years to help with the support and management of seasonal allergies. • Bicarbonate salts, which were added due to their role as immediate antihistamines, and their ability to mitigate the potential drowsiness experienced by those who may also be taking antihistamine medications.

ou know fall is in the air when the mornings start getting crisper and the nights cooler. I’m even starting to see some of the leaves changing already! After the lazy days of summer, Fall signals a time to refocus on our purpose and passion. This month our focus is on the human and animal connection, and for those of you who have pets, you know what we’re talking about. Tom Moorcroft, DO writes a beautiful article about this bond. He asks the question, “Who rescued who?” While we commonly think it’s us who rescue animals from shelters and the wild, isn’t it true that they may also be rescuing us as well? And Bernie Siegel, MD teaches us that it is possible to communicate with our pets. Sometimes it seems as if they can actually read our minds. Ask anyone who’s ever had a pet waiting at the door for him or her as they arrive home from a long day at work. Jill Moorcroft, DO educates us on the osteopathic philosophy and how it can be used specifically for pregnancy and newborns. Osteopathy after pregnancy can help to return your body back to shape quickly and help you regain strength and flexibility. And Nancy Brockett, PhD, shows us that the secret to attracting loving relationships is knowing what qualities we want and don’t want in those relationships. If we truly want to attract good relationships, we have to commit to doing the work on ourselves first. Lori Carpenos, M.Ed, teaches us how to access our innate health through understanding the connection between mind, thought and consciousness. Don’t miss our special advertising section for the CT Women’s Expo and a big thank you to all of our advertisers who participated in this promotion as well as our faithful advertisers that support us every month. Communicating With The Animals

W

e don’t stop to think about how our animals reveal the fact that consciousness is non-local and that our chemistry is also detectable at a distance. Well known examples of this are dogs who can predict when their owners will have seizures and heart attacks, as well as, whether a mole on someone’s leg is benign or a malignant melanoma. I hear many stories about pets who will not leave their sick owner’s bedside and when they do show up in the kitchen for a snack the family knows the patient is getting better. I’ve seen this with our cat Miracle who doesn’t check on me if I am sleeping late but if I do not get out of bed because I don’t feel well she is right there on my chest giving me a purrfect therapy session. As far as consciousness is concerned it is obvious they know when I am thinking about grooming them because they all hide. When I change my mind they are underfoot. I learned a great deal from Amelia Kinkade and her books and work. We became friends out in San Francisco at a non-kill ASPCA conference. When she told me she was an animal intuitive I was a non-believer but when I returned home and had a cat disappear my mind was changed. Via emails I asked Amelia to find the lost cat and with no photograph or information, other than we live in the woods in Connecticut, one day an email came from Amelia detailing every single pet, garbage can, tree and more in the yard and saying the cat is alive I can see the moon through her eyes. The thing I couldn’t understand was Amelia telling me the cat was under the house. It made no sense until the next morning when I went out and after calling the cat’s name heard her answer with a cry. She was under an outdoor stairway that came down to the ground on both sides. With food I enticed her out and rescued her. Well if it works than I’ll try it and Amelia said you have to be calm in your head, not frantic, and get into the animals head. So the next night I approached our bunny Smudge who always runs around the yard and makes it hard for me to bring her in the house. “Smudge, why don’t you let me pick you up and bring you into the house?” Her answer blew my mind. “You don’t treat the cats that way.”

I explained the cats can handle themselves but when it gets dark outside I didn’t want any predator jumping the fence and attacking her. From that night on the problem was solved. Every now and then she’d show her sense of humor by running around for a minute or two and we would both laugh. Then after writing a story, which was turned into a book called Buddy’s Candle, I heard a voice while out walking with Furphy say, "go to the animal shelter." So we jump in the car and head down there. I walked in and asked the name of the dog sitting by the door. Of course, his name was Buddy and he had just been dropped off by some lady who didn’t like his behavior. I know why I was sent the message and home he came with us. We stop for gas and he leaps out of the car and runs out into the street and all the cars are stopping and people are trying to help me get Buddy back into my car. When we got home I asked him, “Why did you do that?” He answered with a story I could never have dreamt of making up. “I lived with a couple, the wife was very nice but her husband was an alcoholic. When he would come home she would ask him to take me for a walk. He would leave me in the car and go out drinking and abuse me too. He hit me with sticks. When we got home he would lie to his wife about where we had been. So I don’t feel safe getting into a car.” I explained to him I would never do that and that we were family and he had nothing to fear. I can still see that he gets nervous when I pick up a stick in the yard or a broom but it’s not a major issue. The real test came when a short time later I returned from shopping to find the sliding side door on the minivan open. I apparently had hit the button, accidentally, while putting the keys in my pocket. I couldn’t believe my eyes; there sat Buddy in an open car. Furphy was missing and I started bellowing his name and running around until I heard Amelia say for me to calm down and get into the dog’s head. As soon as I did I knew he was looking for me and probably inside Stop & Shop with the manager yelling, “Whose dog is this?” Sure enough when I got to the door

the security guard asked me if I was looking for a dog. He had Furphy in his car with air conditioning water and treats. Just waiting for me. A last story for the disbelievers; I have taken our dogs to several of Amelia’s workshops so they can be questioned by people who are learning the process. When Furphy and Buddy were new to our home they often urinated in the house. So my question to the class was why do they pee in the house so often. The answer I got was right on. “You have so many plants in your house they are confused about what’s indoors and what’s outdoors.” The next workshop was at Omega conference center. At the lunch break Amelia and I and Furphy headed for the dining hall. I was told, “Dogs are not allowed in the dining hall.” So I went in the back door and left Furphy sitting outside knowing he would wait for me to come out as he does at the bank, post office and wherever we go. A few minutes later a man comes walking through the dining hall with Furphy in his arms, “Whose dog is this?” I acknowledged the problem was mine. He told me he had come in the front door. Everyone was impressed with Furphy’s determination to be with me so he was granted permission to stay and have lunch with us. In closing let me say that as a physician when I am caring for them, under the direction of our veterinarian, I let them know that I am sorry that I have to do things to them that they are not happy about. I find they are more forgiving and less resistant to taking their medicine and anything else I have to do when I share my feelings with them. Now Furphy does all the talking and I am constantly getting instructions on what to do all day so he is happy with our schedule. He is the alpha male but can’t drive a car so he keeps me busy most of the day. When the car is quiet I know I forgot to let him jump in. Osteopathy for Pregnancy, Delivery, and the Newborn

B

eing pregnant is a unique and powerful life experience. Although it is a natural process and part of the normal life cycle, pregnancy causes a woman’s body to undergo immense physical, chemical, hormonal and emotional changes over a relatively short period of time. Last summer, I was pregnant with my first baby, and, being an Osteopathic physician who practices integrative medicine; I was interested in caring for my pregnancy with a variety of treatments that were complimentary to my routine prenatal care. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) practiced by Osteopathic physicians is one modality that I found especially useful. I initially sought OMM to maintain a healthy pregnancy, but as my pregnancy progressed, it became very useful for the heartburn, back pain, and pelvic pain that I developed. A woman's body is constantly changing during pregnancy. The body must get used to carrying up to 20 pounds of baby, fluid, and placenta in addition to any extra weight it gains. The effects of hormones softening the ligaments, the position of the growing baby, postural changes and increases in weight can put new demands and pressure on the organs, joints, ligaments, muscles, and, really, all tissues of the body. OMM can help to alleviate these stresses.

12

September 2010

What is an Osteopathic Physician?

An Osteopathic physician is a fully licensed physician whose education combines the conventional methods of medical diagnosis and treatment as well as Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). In the United States, there are two types of doctors who are fully licensed as physicians and surgeons: M.D.s and D.O.s. D.O.s are Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. Osteopathic physicians undergo the same rigorous medical training as M.D.s including medical school and residency, and practice alongside them in offices and hospitals across the country in all specialties. In addition to their conventional medical training, Osteopathic physicians receive additional training in hands-on diagnosis and treatment modalities of the whole body as well as Osteopathic philosophy.

Osteopathic Philosophy

The science and philosophy of Osteopathy make it a unique healing art. Osteopathic philosophy holds that each person is a unit of body, mind and spirit; structure and function are interrelated; and the body has self-healing properties. By further exploring these three primary tenets of Osteopathic medicine and discussing OMM, one is able

www.naturalnutmeg.com

to better understand how this healing science may be applied to maintaining a healthy pregnancy and alleviating discomforts that pregnancy may bring. Structure and function are interrelated. Osteopathy is a system of medicine that recognizes the dynamic relationship of structure and function in health and disease. The body’s physical structure provides the framework for the rest of the body to function optimally. When the physical structure is strained or under constant stress, this can lead to problems in seemingly unrelated areas of the body. A body that is functioning optimally has a better chance of adapting to the structural changes of pregnancy. Each person is a dynamic unit of body, mind and spirit. No single element functions separately from the other. Rather than focusing on a specific disease process, Osteopathic physicians treat the whole person: body, mind and spirit. This is particularly important during the treatment of a woman during her pregnancy. Conventional medical treatments tend to focus on the physical aspects of disease; however, the Osteopathic approach seeks to promote health and

overall well-being in all three of these areas. Believe it or not, pregnancy is largely viewed as a disease in the conventional medical establishment. Physical, mental and emotional stressors weaken the immune system. Pregnancy may lead to many life stresses that may be detrimental to a woman’s overall health. By taking the time to develop a personal relationship with each patient, the Osteopathic physician seeks to understand each patient’s unique health goals and is well equipped to help the patient address the less tangible aspects of her medical care. The body has the ability to heal itself. Osteopathic physicians believe that the body’s natural tendency is towards health and healing. While conventional medicine focuses almost entirely on the diseased part, the Osteopath acknowledges this part while also noticing the vast health within the body. By creating treatment plans that remove hindrances to the body’s natural healing mechanisms, Osteopathic physicians support the selfhealing process. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O., founder of the Osteopathic profession, believed “ it is the object of a physician to find health, anyone can find disease.” Rather than focus exclusively on pregnancy as a “condition”, the Osteopathic physician seeks to find and support health within a woman’s body.

What is Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)?

OMM During and After Pregnancy Can Be Beneficial In A Number of Ways:

• Easing some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy. • Preparing for the demands of labor. • Helping the mother to recover after birth.

Common Symptoms Pregnant Women Seek Osteopathic Treatment For:

•Low backache including sacroiliac joints and the coccyx •Hip pain •Sciatica and aching legs •Pain in the front of the pelvis over the pubic area •Groin pain •Varicose Veins •Edema •Upper back pain and neck ache •Carpal tunnel syndrome •Headaches •Difficulty getting comfortable at night •Digestive symptoms and urinary frequency •Muscular tension •Heartburn

Aches and Pains

OMM is a form of hands-on diagnosis and treatment. It is used to help relieve strains that alter physical structure. This treatment assists the body in regaining optimal function. The Osteopathic physician learns how to restore health by applying Osteopathic principles in the practice of OMM. The major difference between OMM and many other hands-on modalities is that the Osteopathic physician is trained to evaluate the difference between a purely structural abnormality and a structural abnormality that is being caused by an underlying internal problem. For example, a structural abnormality found on physical exam, such as a tight muscle or a rib that is slightly out of place, may be due to a minor trauma or just sitting funny in front of the computer; however, it may also be due to an inflamed organ deep within the body. The Osteopathic physician is trained to tell the difference and is well versed in ways to treat the underlying cause and promote overall health. Cranial Osteopathy is an expansion of the general principles of Osteopathy that includes a special understanding of the central nervous system and a mechanism called primary respiration. Those who wish to practice Cranial Osteopathy train intensively through post-graduate studies.

For many pregnant women, it's inevitable. As the pregnancy progresses, tasks that involve the low back often get more difficult. It is harder to bend over, lift, sit or walk for long periods of time. Aches and pains become common as the body changes shape to accommodate the increasing size and weight of the uterus. As the fetus grows and the uterus expands, the center of gravity shifts forward, which causes changes in the positioning of the spine and pelvis, and may also affect the motion of the hips and legs. These postural changes also have consequences such as low back pain and decreased ability to function at the normal level. Considerable changes to posture while standing, sitting, and walking and sleep position occur. Postural changes may cause backache, neck ache, headaches, aching legs and fatigue. If the mother has existing back problems, or strains in her body

www.naturalnutmeg.com

September 2010

13

from past accidents or trauma, it may be more difficult for her to accommodate these changes, and she may suffer more discomfort as a result. Osteopathic treatment can help the body adapt and make the pregnancy much more comfortable. For most physicians, treating back pain and improving daily function relative to tasks that involve the low back is a challenge, because pregnant women are limited to treatments that will not create problems for their developing baby. However, Osteopathic physicians can use OMM at virtually any time during pregnancy to alleviate discomfort. Osteopathic treatment can help women during pregnancy become significantly more comfortable and ease considerably their labor and delivery.

Heartburn

As the uterus expands, it can stretch and crowd the diaphragm (the internal muscle that separates our chest from our abdomen and controls our breathing). Heartburn occurs when stomach contents enter the esophagus (the tube inside us that connects our mouth to our stomach). The esophagus passes through the diaphragm. So, when tensions in the diaphragm occur secondary to pregnancy, heartburn occurs more easily. OMM can often reduce tension in the diaphragm.

Breathing Difficulties

Postural changes through the lower ribs and spine can impede the action of the diaphragm and make breathing difficult. OMM to improve function of the whole rib cage allows full use of available lung capacity.

Varicose Veins and Hemorrhoids

Tension within the pelvis or diaphragm area especially when compounded by a growing baby in a woman’s pelvis and abdomen can increase resistance to the return of venous blood to the heart from the lower half of the body. This can cause or aggravate varicose veins in the legs and hemorrhoids. Osteopathic treatment aims to release tension in the pelvis and diaphragm regions.

14

September 2010

Osteopathic Manipulation in Preparation for Labor and Delivery

An important part of preparation for childbirth is to ensure that the mother’s pelvis is structurally balanced and able to allow the passage of the baby down the birth canal. Trauma to the pelvic bones, coccyx or sacrum at any time in a mother’s life can leave increased tension in muscles, and strains within the ligaments and bones of the pelvis. This can limit the ability of these bones to separate and move out of the way during labor. OMM aims to release old strains within the pelvis, thus giving the best chance of an easy and uncomplicated labor. By improving flexibility in the pelvis and abdomen, OMM helps prepare the way for a more trouble free childbirth. By providing freedom to the ligaments that support the uterus and pelvis, treatment may reduce the risk of emergency caesarean section as well. Ideally, women could receive OMM throughout labor; however, this service is offered in only a few hospitals in the United States.

Is Osteopathy Safe During Pregnancy?

Osteopaths are highly skilled and undergo a minimum of 4 years postgraduate training in addition to the residency training of their choice and are required to obtain continuing education throughout their careers. OMM is a safe and non-invasive method of treatment that can play an important part in prenatal and postpartum care. The Osteopath will take a thorough medical history and undertake a specialized Osteopathic examination to assess the patient’s suitability for Osteopathic care. Where necessary the Osteopath will refer for other tests or to other health care providers. Osteopathic treatment involves gentle manual treatments that support the pregnant mother by enabling her body to accommodate to the changes of pregnancy without undue stress and strain. Osteopathy can be beneficial before, during and after pregnancy. Gentle osteopathic techniques are perfectly safe at all stages of pregnancy. The Cranial Osteopathic approach is a particularly gentle way of working with the body’s own natural mechanism for releasing and re-balancing tensions, without force.

Osteopathy for Postpartum Recovery

Birth can be traumatic for both mother and baby, and Osteopathy is effective at helping both to recover. After birth it is advised that both mother and newborn return to see an Osteopath for a check up and, if necessary, for treatment.

Osteopathy After A Pregnancy Can:

• Ensure your body returns back to shape quickly • Help you regain your strength and flexibility • Check and correct any remaining strains in the back and pelvis

Osteopathic Treatment of the Newborn

Osteopathic treatment of the newborn is especially important. We know that childbirth can be very difficult and stressful for the baby, as he or she inches through the narrow pelvic passage. The effects of birth on the newborn can be traumatic. When navigating the birth canal, considerable forces are placed on the infant’s body, especially the head, tailbone, and spine. Research on over a thousand infants has shown that 8090 % of them suffer from the effects of trauma due to the birth process and its surrounding events. Research by Viola Frymann, D.O., of the Osteopathic Center for Children in San Diego,

After delivery it is difficult for a mother to find the time to be treated Osteopathically. However, taking a relatively brief break from caring for your newborn to receive OMM within the first month of delivery will be very helpful in the long run. Osteopathic treatment after delivery can assist with easing the physical strains of giving birth and helping with the body's optimal recovery. This is a great time to be treated Osteopathically because the joints and tissues are still soft and loose. It is easier to relieve any strains during this time than after the body tightens back up. After giving birth, the body not only has to recover from the changes it made during pregnancy but also from the effects of delivery while at the same time doing the very physically and mentally demanding job of caring for a new baby. Caring for a baby can place enormous strain on the back, during such activities as nursing in poor positions, lifting car seats, especially in and out of the car, or carrying a child on one hip. Unresolved childbirth stresses in the mother can contribute to ongoing back problems, period problems, stress incontinence, constipation, headache and more. The mother’s pelvis is vulnerable to lasting strains from the forces involved, particularly after a difficult delivery. Some of these strains can have a profound effect on the nervous system, and contribute to postnatal depression. OMM can help the mother to return to normal, physically and emotionally, after birth by releasing strains from both pregnancy and labor. This allows her to relax and enjoy her new baby.

California, has shown that approximately 10% of all newborns demonstrate significant distortions in the shape and mobility of the structures of the head, while another 80% demonstrate moderate distortion after birth, and only 10% have no significant structural problems. The symptoms in the infants varied, according to the degree of birth trauma and level of vitality (strength of the immune system) in the infant. A difficult birth may cause strain to the tissues of the newborn from twisting, overstretching, or compression. If the trauma is small, the body may be able to “fix” it on its own. If the trauma is more significant or if the newborn lacks vitality, it cannot fix itself. Then, the nervous system holds these distortions, in an attempt to create balance. If the forces are too great, the nervous system cannot fully compensate and the imbalances will appear extreme. For example, one common cause of colic is trauma to the back of the head during birth. In the case of cesarean section, it seems that these forces could be eliminated. However, there are other factors to consider. Prior to cesarean section, the child’s head may have been compressed for many hours in the pelvis and the pressure from this can become “imprinted” on the structures in the child’s head. With an understanding of normal anatomy and the application of a trained sense of touch, the Osteopathic physician can identify and treat the distortions in these affected children. This can vastly influence the first months of life for both par-

ent and child. In general, there are also long-term benefits, as these compressions may impair other functions later in life. Osteopathic treatment of the newborn involves gentle support of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. No strong or sudden forces are applied. Treatment involves applying the proper forces in the proper areas for the correct amount of time. As this is done, the body monitors and self corrects.

How Do I Find an Osteopathic Physician with the Skills to Help My Baby and Me?

Many Osteopathic physicians do not maintain their skills in Osteopathic manipulation beyond medical school. So, it is important to find a D.O. who focuses on these skills in their current practice. Since the number of Osteopathic physicians who maintain a high proficiency in OMM is relatively small, it can be difficult to find an OMM specialist in many parts of the country. One resource to locate physicians who specialize in OMM is www.CranialAcademy.org.

Dr. Jill Moorcroft practices at Origins Of Health in Glastonbury where they specialize in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for people of all ages including pregnant women and newborns. See ad on page 34.

The Secret to Attracting Loving Relationships

W

hat’s the most important thing in life? What’s essential for a good life? I recently heard that question posed, with a variety of answers including: health and healthy nutrition, water, safety (physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological), money, wisdom, imagination… I tend to agree with Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks of The Hendricks Institute who say, “the most important thing in life is feeling the flow of love inside you and around you.” We’re not talking about an abstract concept of love; this is the vitalizing energy of love that flows freely (or not) within and between us and beyond. Although certain apparel and electronics are now associated with “life is good”, in order to have a truly good life it’s important to enhance the flow of harmony and genuine love

in our life through conscious loving relationships. All too often, however, our relationships are anything but conscious, and not always loving. It has been shown that lack of love in infants can cause death. We can argue that love –acceptance, desiring one’s highest good, and treating with empathic esteem –vitalizes us. Or as Sarah Ban Breathnach puts it, “We are created by love, for love, to love.” Teachers such as Wayne Dyer, Gregg Braden, Mary Hall, Deepak Chopra, and Marianne Williamson equate loving energy with vital Life Energy. In such a paradigm each living being is a unique portion of the life energy, connected with the source of all energy and with each other. The metaphor of the worldwide web graphically illustrates that we are all interconnected via the flow of energy. Put another way, the energy of life is the “ocean” in which we each are a drop of water, and the composition of that “ocean” is love and light. With all this loving energy abounding, and given the importance of loving relationships to vitality, how do we participate in the experience of free-flowing genuine love? The secret key to having loving relationships with others lies in having a conscious, loving relationship with ourselves. It’s extremely difficult for most of us to have such a relationship, primarily because the flow of loving energy is often blocked within us. We’ve forgotten our innate connection with the energy of life itself and need to reacquaint ourselves with the essence of love that we are. In the words of the metaphors above: we’re connected to the internet, but we’re working in another program; or, we’re in a patch where dispersed oil interrupts the flow of water and life within the ocean. For us to have what is important for life, we have to wake up to a relationship with our essential self. One of the most effective tools I’ve found for “waking up” is Mary A Hall’s Daily Heart Meditation, used in conjunction with her Heart Thoughts. With this tool we can remember our union with all of life and draw on the energy source for love, peace, joy, health, abundance,

and forgiveness. To further develop a conscious loving relationship, we need to know, accept and love ourselves deeply for everything we are and everything we’re not. The awareness of our true essence has been hidden beneath survival responses learned early in life. Exposure to “normal” societal expectations via education, television, advertising and family steeps us in fear and scarcity. Even in the best of childhoods we may have lost touch with vast portions of our authentic self by taking to heart disapproval, censoring, harsh criticism, or ridicule from others. As a result there are aspects of ourselves that we don’t accept and believe are unlovable. It’s most likely that we have traits that need to change; for example, we may have a fear that we’re fundamentally flawed and don’t deserve love. Until we take the counter-experiential action of bringing genuine loving acceptance to the part of us that carries the fear, we can’t make room for receiving love from anyone else. Acceptance and non-judgment interrupt thought loops of draining energy focused only on survival, and spontaneously open us to vital life energy, which can bring transformation. Though the process of self-acceptance is simple, it’s not easy. It involves looking unflinchingly at ourselves, acknowledging both our strengths and limits, celebrating the former, and letting go of blame and contempt regarding limits. We may have strong judgments against our limits; quite often we blame ourselves for not being enough this, and harshly criticize that we’re too that. For example, we might perceive ourselves as not worthy to have good things, such as considerateness, come our way and rail

against ourselves for being “too sensitive” when another person disregards our wishes. Learning to accept ourselves goes beyond willpower. It encompasses whole-person learning: exploring our experience through wonder and curiosity, bringing harmony between the mind and body, and re-balancing the subtle energies of the body. Emotional Freedom Techniques and Bio-spiritual Focusing are two tools, which accelerate the healing of unresolved emotional hindrances within ourselves. When we love ourselves deeply and unconditionally, the energy of love expands. Self-acceptance creates a profound inner shift leading to greater ability to give and receive love and is a crucial ingredient in attracting conscious, loving relationships. A powerful new program designed to provide a “good map” for creating freeflowing love within ourselves and in our relationships is The Relationship Solution. Using research from their own relationship and from those of thousands they’ve counseled over three decades, Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks developed programs that help people attract and maintain long-term love relationships. We need to allow ourselves to consciously want in the deepest part of ourselves the genuine loving relationships we want, and then we must wholeheartedly commit to attracting and enjoying them. When we commit to wanting what we want, we discover that we have unconscious commitment(s) to getting what we don’t want. That is, we might be unhappy with our current situation of being a “loner”. We might wish for someone to share our thoughts and feelings with, but find

ourselves slow to tell acquaintances anything from deep within. If we’re frank, we reveal an unconscious commitment to perpetuating the painful drama of being alone. In the Hendricks program we engage the mind, heart and body to get below the level of words and open the free-flowing energy of our true essence – love. We learn to bring unconditional loving acceptance to all aspects of ourselves as we: • encounter the challenge of accepting the most hidden aspects of ourselves • become aware of, and welcome, our emotions as part of our wholeness • acknowledge, accept, and release our unconscious commitments, such as an unconscious commitment to being criticized or betrayed or abandoned • make a new commitment to attract ing conscious, loving relationships. It’s important to know what qualities we want and don’t want in loving relationships. We want to attract wholeness and completeness which is a good definition of joy. We think the wholeness comes from someone or thing outside ourselves. The reality is, however, that our true essence is the wholeness, and we must become ourselves the person we want to attract. We find that if we want to move forward into loving relationships, we have to commit to doing any necessary work in ourselves and “wipe the disc” so that we open up free space to experience our true essence. This is courageous and exciting work because we are connected to vitalizing Life energy with its abundance of love, peace, joy, health and forgiveness. Lymphatic massage There is also a type of massage that helps drain and improve the operation of the lymphatic system. Unlike the circulatory system in our bodies that moves the blood and is powered by the heart, the lymphatic system does not have a pump, and needs help to stimulate stagnant fluid. Improving the flow of the lymphatic system is instrumental in improving overall health by strengthening the immune system, and helping to rid the body of toxins by moving stagnant lymph fluid.

Lypossage

Massage...It's Not Just For Relaxation Anymore

M

assage has come a long way from the traditional model of loosening tight muscles and relaxing the mind. It has greater therapeutic value than has often been acknowledged and it even can smooth the dimpled appearance of cellulite. The field of massage is just as vast as the field of medicine. There are all types of therapies, and specialties that help address many kinds of conditions. Many times therapists combine techniques, customizing each session to get the best results. Several of these techniques include myofascial release, touch for health, and scar tissue work.

Rehabilitative bodywork Rehabilitative bodywork offers people relief from chronic and acute injuries by freeing restrictions and strengthening weak muscles. These include neck and back pain, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, TMJ (a jaw disorder), and sciatica. One of the most effective advances in the field of rehabilitative bodywork is a method called Neurokinetic Therapy, which we have been practicing for over 12 years to treat a variety of ailments with our clients. Massage therapy is also effective for improving athletic performance and helping people recover from injury. Massage therapists work with many athletes to help them reach their level of athletic optimization, whether they are a professional tennis player, an ironman triathlete or a weekend warrior. This kind of rehabilitative bodywork addresses much more than sore or tight muscles.

Cranial Sacral therapy Another specialty is cranial sacral therapy, which detects and corrects blockages and restrictions within the cranial system. It involves the cranium, bones in the head and face, neck and spinal column down to the sacrum, which is at the base of the spine. This is very helpful for people with head injuries, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), sinus problems, neurological problems and headaches. The bones and underlying membranes are gently manipulated to relieve pressure from improper alignment.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating advances in massage therapy is a process called Lypossage. This is an all-natural, nonsurgical cellulite treatment for women that can smooth out cellulite, make you look slimmer and healthier without losing weight. In fact, it is the number one cellulite treatment in the world. This treatment also gives clients an overall healthier appearance, and can help achieve physical dimension loss of several inches. Lypossage treatment is a specific blend of massage modalities that derive from complex physical therapy, including lymphatic drainage and deep tissue release. It cleanses the body of stagnant, stalled lymphatic fluid that can create unsightly lumps and bulges. It also breaks up adhesions under the skin that contribute to the dimpled, uneven appearance of cellulite. Lypossage is used on a lot of pre and post liposuction clients. It is used for ridding the body of lymph congestion that may result from the liposuction, and also helps firm and smooth any residual cellulite and maintain the results of the liposuction. In addition, it lifts and firms tissue and improves muscle tone. It can be used anywhere cellulite is present, including the hips, thighs, abdomen, arms, neck and face. It can be done manually, with an FDA-approved machine, or with a combination of the two.

Reflexology Another very effective technique for alleviating many ailments and promoting overall health is reflexology. Pressure is applied to points on the feet that correspond to all of the organs in the body. It is derived from Chinese Medicine and can be used as a valuable assessment tool and has benefits throughout the body. These are a few of the healing therapies offered to improve the health and wellbeing of clients so they can lead a pain free, active life no matter their age. Clients of all ages, ranging from infants to people in their late 80s benefit from these services. David Priest, LMT, and Nancy Sinchak, LMT, own West Hartford Massage Clinic, located at 45 South Main Street in West Hartford. Their menu of services includes Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT), Cranial (or Craniosacral) Sacral Therapy, Pre-Natal Massage, Myofascial Release, Medical Massage, Polarity Therapy, Light Therapy (photo rejuvenation), Non-surgical Facelifts, Reiki, Energy Therapy, and Touch for Health. The Human-Canine Relationship

I

recently saw a paw print magnet on the back of someone’s car that read “Who Rescued Who?” What an amazing sentiment! The second I read this I had a warm, loving feeling in my heart. Those three simple words hold a tremendous amount of meaning for me and I’m sure they do for many of you. With the exception of a short time in the beginning of college, I have always lived with dogs, and sometimes cats. Growing up we always had dogs, just like my parents did when they were growing up. As a young adult, I adopted a wonderful Australian Shepherd named Frankie. Australian Shepherds are supposed to be reserved around strangers and are often even stand off-ish. When I pulled up to the farm where Frankie had been staying, I saw several dogs running around. As I opened my car door, one hopped in. I remember thinking, I hope this is the one who needs to find a forever home and it was. Little did I know that living with Frankie would change my life forever and I would spend the next thirteen years with one of the noblest animals I have ever met. Frankie and I did every thing together. He went with me to college classes, parties, hiking trips and camping trips. Frankie even went to wilderness emergency medicine and rescue courses with me. He went on class field trips and lay in the back of the classroom while I gave major

22

presentations to my college professors. On college graduation day, I remember leaving the house with Frankie by my side just as I did most every morning. I was implored by a concerned family member not to bring him. After much discussion, I decided to leave Frankie home. At the graduation ceremony, my advisor, speaking to the entire college graduating class, asked where Frankie was because he had attended more classes than most of the people graduating that day. Frankie had become a regular at all my school functions. Funniest thing, dogs were not allowed in college buildings or on many of the trips Frankie accompanied me on. Frankie was an exception, or was he? What made him stand out? We had a very deep connection. Frankie just seemed to know what I wanted and he would do it. It was as if he could read my mind. We seemed to be able to clearly communicate without words. Our desire to hang out together created a bond that allowed us to flow through life almost as if we were one. And no one could ask for a better friend. The end of college proved to be a very big stepping stone for me. Thankfully I had the never-ending love and companionship of this amazing being. I had the incredible experience of spending 13 years with Frankie. Along the way we did some incredible things. www.naturalnutmeg.com

One of the most important and influential experiences on my life was when the two of us established a pet therapy program at a local hospital. Weekly we would visit children and adults on the psychiatric ward. Frankie had a real gift for sharing his unconditional love with everyone, especially these patients. I feel honored to share some of my most cherished memories of my friend Frankie, and I know many people have similar relationships with their canine companions. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting the police and military, and participate in other sports such as Frisbee and agility. Service dogs act as guides and supports for those with disabilities. They serve people with visual and hearing impairments, autism, and psychiatric illnesses. Dogs are alerting us when their handler shows signs of an impending seizure, sometimes well in advance of onset, allowing the owner to seek safety, medication, or medical care. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and research is underway to see how effective they are at identifying certain types of cancer. Pet therapy is an integral part of care given in hospitals and nursing homes all across this nation. Dogs work along side humans to search for victims of disasters, such as the recent ones in Middletown, CT and Haiti. The most common service dogs provide for humans is companionship.

But why? What drives a dog to give so much of themselves to their humans? Archaeological evidence demonstrates that the domestication of dogs occurred more than 15,000 years ago. It was thought that wolves, and their dog descendants, would have derived great benefit from living in human camps. Greater safety, more reliable sources of food, less caloric needs and more chance to breed are a few. They would have had access to a greater variety of food sources by working with humans. Humans stood upright and had different visual capabilities than dogs. Humans also had tools that would allow them to bring down larger prey items. These attributes would have meant there would have been a greater diversity and amount of food available. And, the dogs would have had to spend much less energy to obtain it. Living with dogs would have great benefits for humans. Using their acute sense of hearing, dogs would have increased the safety of a human camp by acting as an alert system if predators or strangers approached. Dogs would have increased the sanitation by cleaning up scraps and waste around the camps. Research suggests dogs and humans may have worked together to ensure successful hunts and that the benefits of cooperative hunting was an important factor in wolf/dog domestication. There is also research that shows that the human-dog partnership set both species on a new evolutionary course.

People and dogs are both pack animals. I can’t help but feel that the initial human-canine bond was more than just a utilitarian arrangement. I believe there was also an additional factor - a sense or feeling of connection between the two species. It’s very difficult to put this feeling into words, but if you have a deep bond with a pet, you’ll know what I mean. For many of us, we learn about this incredible connection during our childhood.

University in England found sharing your life with a pet corresponds to improved overall health and fewer visits to the doctor. A study of Medicare patients showed that dog ownership led to decreases in doctor’s visits as well. In this study, even the most highly stressed group of seniors had 21% less doctor’s visits. Some of the most common medical

Growing up with pets Studies have shown that children who grow up with pets have greater cognitive development and higher self-esteem. They also tend to score higher on empathy scales than non-pet owners. Our daughter is naturally drawn to both our dogs and cats. She loves to stare at them, pull on their hair and hold them close. The amazing thing is to watch how our family pets allow her to do just about whatever she wants to them, all the while appearing to enjoy this moment as the best ever. In my life, growing up with dogs taught me unconditional love and compassion as well as responsibility and leadership. Whenever I was scared, ill or just not feeling myself, I could always find the open heart of a dog to comfort me.

An ounce of prevention Many studies have shown that owning a pet has tremendous health benefits. Studies conducted at the University of California at Los Angeles and Cambridge

conditions people are dealing with today include high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart conditions. One study of 5,741 people was conducted in Melbourne, Australia. Researchers found the pet owners had lower levels of blood pressure and cholesterol than non-pet-owners, even when both groups made the same poor lifestyle choices including smoking and eating highly processed foods. There are many other studies showing that pet ownership leads to decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides. Controlling the levels of these important health markers leads to decreased risk of heart attack and stroke. Multiple studies have shown that dog owners undertake considerably more physical exercise than cat owners and nonpet owners. Pet Frankie...Studying ownership after a heart attack has been shown to significantly increase oneyear survivorship over non-pet owners.

Pet a dog and you’ll relax How many of you experience moments of high stress in your lives? If you’re like many people, you probably experience high stress much more than you would like. Research conducted about 30 years ago by Alan Beck of Purdue University and Aaron Katcher of the University of Pennsylvania measured what happens physically when a person pets a friendly and familiar dog. They found that a person’s blood pressure lowered, their heart rate decreased and their breathing became

24

more regular. They also noted that muscle tension relaxed. These are all signs of relaxation. A more recent study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine found the same results and found lower levels of stress hormones such as cortisol – all just from petting a dog. Incredibly these results were seen in 5-24 minutes and without any training or practice.

Feeling depressed? Being a dog and/or cat owner decreases the risk of depression for caregivers whose spouse has cancer compared to a similar person who does not own a pet according to researchers at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center. Researchers at Purdue University have Photo: Tom Moorcroft found that pets fulfill many of the same support functions as humans for both adults and children, that pet support, like human support, is associated with less stress and better adjustment and that this relation holds across varied family characteristics. Mothers and fathers reported that their pets provided emotional support, social integration, and closeness; while children found pets provided emotional support and a sense of mutual respect and partnership. A study of AIDS patients conducted by UCLA in 1999 found that pets provide a level of companionship that helped the patients cope with the stress of their illness. The study looked at more than 1,800 patients and found that those who did not

have a pet were more than twice as likely to report symptoms of depression. Scientists in South Africa have conducted research that shows that having a pet is similar to taking an anti-depressant, increasing the release of endorphins and other hormones tied to pleasure. In a study from the Institute for Psychology at the University of Bonn, Germany, researchers studied the effects of dogs on children who were experiencing the divorce of their parents. Children said their dogs were a living companion indispensable in the crisis, a companion for unquestioning, loving attention, a companion to whom you can tell your problems, anger and rage, an important help when worried, as the dog distracts joyfully and playfully, a retreat free from conflict when parents quarrel, and a considerable help when overcoming loneliness in a broken home. Animal-assisted intervention research has shown that animal-assisted therapy with a dog can increase social behaviors, such as smiling and laughing in a person with Alzheimer’s disease. One study demonstrated that children with ADHD and conduct disorders who participated in an

education program with dogs and other animals showed increased attendance, increased knowledge and skill objectives, and decreased antisocial and violent behavior compared to those who were not in an animal-assisted program.

Who rescued who? So I guess I’m really not sure why dogs (and other pet animals) are willing to give so much of themselves to us. In wild dog packs, each member supports the other unconditionally. In dog-human packs, it seems like dogs continue to fulfill this amazing role of supporting each and every member of their family, unconditionally. I did find one study that found that shelter animals who were visited frequently by humans showed a decrease in several markers of stress, so it is possible that dogs are experiencing many of the same benefits from being with us that we are from being with them. What I do know is dogs seem to find it extremely easy to share all of themselves with us. They are there for us regardless of our life situation, our financial situation, our mood, day or night. They live in the present moment and do their best to help us do the same. Healthy Family

Dr. Lauren Gouin, N.D.

The Childhood Immunity Trio: Eczema, Allergies and Asthma

A

child starts out with very little immunity developed at birth. The gross majority of an individual’s immune system is developed and cultivated with experience and interaction with the environment. The influences from our environment currently are not the same as our ancestors, and with these new influences come an increase in several disease states in children. Eczema, allergies and asthma are all conditions associated with childhood; however, they are substantially on the rise as the immune systems of our children are developing in a world of numerous vaccinations, highly processed foods and medications that interfere with the immune system’s development, such as antibiotics and aspirin. Also, there are new challenges, with plastics and other chemicals for our children’s young bodies to have to process and clear. On the surface, conditions like eczema, asthma and allergic reactions seem like different organ systems and almost unrelated. However, all these conditions surface where the environment interfaces with the body, skin, lungs, eyes and nose. Our immune systems are vigilant at these locations, monitoring for potential foreign antigens. The skin and lungs are also two of the four locations in the body known as the emunctories. Emunctories are the ways your body clears toxins and waste from the body. The secretions in sweat and the moisture and exchange in breath are both ways the body clears unwanted chemicals and substances. A challenged immune system and demand on our detoxification pathways strains different aspects of young people, manifesting in skin conditions like eczema, breathing conditions like asthma, and allergic reactions like itchy eyes and a runny nose.

Eczema

Currently one in five children in the United States will develop eczema. Itchy, dry, red skin on the folds of elbows, behind ears or other patches on the body seems nothing more than that. It can blister and scab over time, but beyond the surface, eczema is a sign that the immune system is irritated, whether from an allergen, imbalance or irritant.

ronments, however, they can be a poison to some young immune systems when these environmental triggers create inflammation and irritation in the body.

Treatment Calm and Balance

There are many external factors that up regulate portions of a child’s immune system. One of the goals when addressing an agitated immune system is to reduce inflammation and irritation and re-establish balance. Healthy fats can be part of the support of a calm immune system. Omega 3 essential fatty acids help keep the immune system calm and less reactive to external irritants. Studies have found it to be helpful for all three of the common childhood immune overreactions. Another excellent way to balance the immune system is to help repopulate the healthy bacteria in the digestive tract. With a large part of the immune system being harbored around the digestive tract, researchers are now finding balancing bugs in the gut actually reduces risk of upper respiratory infections, improve skin conditions like eczema and reduces our allergic reactions to the environment.

Treat the Cause

While calming and balancing the immune system, addressing the cause of imbalance should be the long term goal. Naturopathic medicine aims to support the immune system’s development, by nurturing a natural response to colds, good nutrition and removing obstacles to cure, such as food sensitivities and allergies. Aiding a young immune system to develop correctly from the start may prevent other diseases in the future. Asthma

The most common chronic condition in children is the tight chest, wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing of asthma. Between five to fifteen percent of American children suffer from this condition. Fourteen million school days are missed by children every year due to asthma and the rates of cases of asthma and child deaths from asthma continues to rise.

Seasonal Allergies

Up to thirty percent of children suffer from some form of seasonal allergy. Stuffy nose, itchy eyes and many symptoms of congestion that mimic a common cold can plague a child year round. Molds, dust, ragweed and other pollens are in all our enviwww.naturalnutmeg.com

The Importance of Accessing Your Innate Health

H

ave you ever questioned your own thinking? Most of us tend to assume that our thoughts are facts. We generally consider it normal to question other’s thoughts, but how often do we question our own? Our personal thoughts are so close to us they masquerade as reality. In the past, I tried to think positively but if I was in a bad mood I wouldn't believe myself, so my attempts to think positively wouldn't last very long. If you simply replace one thought with another, it will only provide temporary relief. On the other hand, when you start to find the true nature of Thought, it will take you to a deeper level of understanding, which helps create a more permanent, deeper, healthier outlook on life - because you are finding your own inner wisdom." Sydney Banks, The Enlightened Gardener Revisted. Thoughts in and of themselves are neutral; we give them meaning, good or bad, with additional thoughts. When you know how the mind works to cause mood shifts, you realize that you are in the driver’s seat and that you are quite capable of creating and maintaining a positive state

of mind, from the inside out. It does not require effort, it only requires understanding how the mind works. In fact, it’s the same “mechanism” that allows people to maintain diets, maintain a healthy lifestyle, foster harmonious relationships, and have a change of heart. Because of a discovery in 1973, we know how to harness this “mechanism.” The basic premise of Three Principles Psychology is that all human beings are connected to a Divine or Universal Intelligence, which describes the first principle, which is Mind. Thought produces our feelings, from our feelings come our reactions, our behaviors, and our overall experience of life. Consciousness allows us to experience our thoughts as a reality. In other words, our thoughts dictate our lives. When we understand what creates our experience of life we can utilize our ability to create our experiences more wisely. These three principles explain the full range of the human experience. We have the free will to accept or dismiss our healthy or unhealthy, productive or nonproductive thoughts, which in turn affects our outcomes.

A simple explanation of the principles: Mind: The universal energy to create experience. Thought: The ability to create experience as a thinking individual. Consciousness: The ability to be aware of our experience and of how we create it. Taken together they explain how we create form from formless energy, which in turn shows us how to access a deeper wisdom and thereby improve the results we get in life. The following true story illustrates how understanding the workings of the mind helped someone with prostate cancer. I met John in 1994. We were part of a group learning about three principles that explain how the mind works to give us a positive or negative experience every moment of our lives. Knowing how these principles work together shows us how to access our mental health at any moment even in difficult times. John’s story is an example of how a

healthy mental state might contribute to healing the physical body. In June 2010 John wrote: ...my most recent PSA (prostate specific antigen) score has remained steady and below the level it was when I was first diagnosed four years ago. That diagnosis, not surprisingly, accompanied a range of other acute disease conditions: Overweight, hypertension, hypothyroidism, continuous diarrhea, skin ailments, high cholesterol, hay fever, itchy eye, and chronic exhaustion. Each of the above conditions is now completely healed.

The following is an interview I conducted with John: Q: John, how would you say your personal thinking might have contributed to your diagnosis? A: I was a macho kind of guy. I thought, "it'll be alright" and didn't take care of myself. At gut level (literally, bulging bigger by the month) I didn't grasp that I only had one body and that I was responsible and accountable for its care and maintenance: for what I ingested, how I exercised and how I used the power of thought. But the wake up call came - my urologist presented the news with a warning that there was limited time to have the tumors cut, drugged, or burnt away; or that they would metastasize, most likely to my bones. "When this happens," she said, "you will die a slow painful death." Q: Do you think that your understanding of how your mind works helped you through your healing process? A: From my understanding of how the Three Principles work within all of us, I realized that my penchant for filling life with interesting but non-essential and energy sapping, emotionally challenging activities was stressful and not conducive to deep restorative healing. I was falling short in supporting my body and mind with the much-needed energy that would eliminate the chronic condition called cancer. Q: How did your thinking change about how you were living your life before your diagnosis? A: I realized how important it is to work in harmony with our natural ability to create our life experiences through thought. Humans have the free will to think anything. It’s easy to succumb to food and drinks that are unhealthy for us, as it is easy to succumb to unhealthy thoughts that come to us. We don’t have to succumb; we can make healthier, wiser choices. Even if you are conscious of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals you take in, what about the thoughts you feed your spirit? We are all born with innate health and the free will to access our health and wellbeing at any point in time. John is now making wiser choices and he attributes much of his wellness to his mental state of mind. Submitted by Lori Carpenos, M.Ed., LMFT. (860) 561-1919. WWW.3PrinciplesTherapy.com. Looking for a Safe, Natural Alternative for Rejuvenating Aging Skin?

L

ook no further than the non-surgical face lift which uses microcurrent technology. Microcurrent is like the body’s own natural electrical current that is electronically controlled to alternate between positive and negative currents in short pulses controlled by a frequency. Supported by over 30 years of research and first used to treat bone fractures, TMJ and pain disorders, this technology activates the skin’s natural chemicals responsible for maintaining healthy cells. Microcurrent produces electrical signals like those naturally occurring when the body is repairing damaged tissue and has been shown to stimulate cell growth and rejuvenate aging skin. It is truly a safer alternative to riskier and invasive procedures like Botox or plastic surgery.

As we age, our skin gets thinner and less elastic, facial muscles weaken and there is reduced production of collagen and elastin. Both collagen and elastin are critically important skin proteins: collagen is responsible for the structural support and elastin for the resilience of the skin. The dermis is the middle layer of the skin located between the epidermis and subcutaneous tissue. It is the thickest of the skin layers and comprises a tight, sturdy mesh of collagen and elastin fibers. The dermis is the layer responsible for the skin's structural integrity, elasticity and resilience. Wrinkles arise and develop in the dermis. Therefore, an anti-wrinkle treatment has a chance to succeed only if it can reach as deep as the dermis. Typical collagen and elastin creams, for example, never reach the dermis because collagen and elastin molecules are too large to penetrate the epidermis. Hence, contrary to what some manufacturers of such creams might imply, these creams have little effect on skin wrinkles. Studies on microcurrent therapy indicate a 14% increase in the production of natural collagen, a 48% increase in natural elastin production, and a 38% increase in blood circulation over the course of 20 days. In addition, one study published in the 2009 International Journal of Medical Sciences examining microcurrent in the management of diabetes, hypertension and chronic wounds showed that diabe-

www.naturalnutmeg.com

tes and hypertension were well controlled and the subject’s wounds were markedly healed (30-100%). The low levels of antioxidants accompanied by raised levels of free radical damage play a major role in delaying wound healing. Microcurrent presumably has an antioxidant effect, and it was shown to accelerate wound healing through increasing the levels of ATP and free amino acids in damaged cells, which in turn increased the rate of cellular repair. In damaged or aging cells, the membrane channels become paralyzed, preventing nutrients from entering the cell and toxic waste from being excreted. Microcurrent erases this “memory” from the cell and opens the cellular membrane to allow nutrients in and waste out. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) molecules are the storage and distribution vehicles for energy in the body. ATP is known as the “energy of life” and drives a number of biological processes such as photosynthesis, muscle contractions/re-education, protein synthesis, and membrane transport.

Melissa Martin, esthetician and owner of Anew You Skincare in Avon, has been using microcurrent therapy for everything from treating acne to wrinkles. “I heard about this technology from my esthetic instructor, tried it once and saw remarkable results,” Martin says. “In my clients, I’ve seen a reduction in crow’s feet, a softening of wrinkles and lines, and greater definition along the cheekbones and jaw line. It’s a great alternative to invasive procedures for skin rejuvenation and it definitely works. We refer to the treatment as our non-surgical face lift.” The treatment sends safe, painless impulses to the muscles in your face and neck which, in essence, "re-educate" the muscles and restores them back almost to their original shape. When this happens the visible results are quite dramatic and the face and neck are lifted, firmed and toned back to a much more youthful appearance. At the same time, the microcurrents improve circulation to your skin which stimulates production of collagen, improves tone and texture, and improves or eliminates fine lines. “One of the things that makes the treatment so popular is that people see visible results after just a single treatment,” Martin explains. “This gives ‘instant gratification’ which is seen so rarely as a result of other anti-aging products or techniques.” This procedure is preventative for younger clients and rejuvenating for mature clients. The treatment delivers a variety of benefits to clients who wish to attain a healthier and younger looking appearance including; improving muscle tone in face and neck, lifting jowls and eyebrows, skin exfoliation, reducing and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles, improving facial circulation and enhancing natural collagen and elastin production. So what is a treatment like? After one, I was hooked. It was so relaxing I might have fallen asleep had I not been asking Melissa a million questions for this article. If you’ve ever had a massage, this is truly a similar experience, except the treatment is focused solely on your neck and face. As I lay on a massage table, Melissa performed a series of manipulations using special gloves attached to the machine to deliver the current to the skin. With her hands, she contours and sculpts the face as the microcurrent delivers a stimulus to increase ATP and collagen production which enables the skin and facial muscles to hold their position longer. The procedure starts with the neck on one side of the face, works up along the jaw line, across the cheekbones and then on the forehead. The therapy lasts

about an hour and Melissa ends it with a scalp massage which is a nice treat! I immediately noticed a softening of fine lines around my eyes, forehead and frown lines within the first few treatments. The benefits of the treatments are cumulative, which means that the more treatments you have, the more improvement you will see in your face. Martin recommends a minimum of 4 treatments, however, she says most clients do 6-8 depending on what results they are trying to achieve. After the first series of treatments, the good news is that only a single maintenance treatment is recommended about once every 4-6 months. The facial muscles appear to hold the re-education stimulus that microcurrent therapy delivers for months at a time, thereby preventing fine lines and wrinkles from reoccurring. Microcurrent therapy can be combined with other treatments such as microdermabrasion, light therapy, lymphatic stimulation and peels in order to maximize results for skin rejuvenation. Martin suggests starting treatment in your 30’s and 40’s to help slow the effects of aging and fewer treatments are needed at that age to see results. However, the treatments are effective at any age. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hindman. Melissa Martin opened her skincare center in May of 2007 and has been a practicing esthetician for over 10 years. She offers numerous skincare treatments as well as massage therapy, shamanic healing, reiki and cellulite treatments. For more information, visit www. anewyouskincare.net or call (860)284-9730. Goldenrod

(Solidago canadensis)

ate each summer we are greeted by a profusion of Goldenrod’s gloriously radiant and cheerful yellow blooms decorating our views in meadows, fields and roadsides. Jovial golden blossoms adorn the sturdy stalks that will never appear alone; vast colonies of this herbal ally will prodigiously populate pastures and paddocks if given half a chance. There are a dizzying variety of species of Solidago; some sources estimate that there are over eighty, while more conservative approximations are about half that figure. Nonetheless, it is notoriously difficult to differentiate members of the genus and although most are medicinal, the variety that is usually referred to in herbalism is S. canadensis. The enormous plethora of Solidago makes it easy to understand her long-held reputation for generating abundance, luck and love. Astrologically, Goldenrod is assigned to Venus, making her a popular herb for ceremonies to attract true love. Some legends claim that a tea or a bouquet of her flowers will draw your soul-mate to you. Planting it near your front door is said to attract prosperity, and if she volunteers to make a home in your garden, she brings good fortune with her. The most fragrant of the Goldenrod native to New England is S. tenuifolia, more readily distinguished by its many branches of slightly rounded flower clusters; it smells exactly like honey and the bees adore it. Because her bloom-time is shared with the invisible green flowers of ragweed, poor Goldenrod gets blamed for seasonal allergies, but this is simply untrue. Ragweed has tiny pollen grains that are carried by the wind, grains that are small enough to irritate and inflame sinus tissues; Goldenrod sports a small amount of sticky, large-grained pollen that are exclusively picked up by bees and other pollinating insects, and do not cause allergy symptoms. The irony is that Goldenrod is in fact a helpful remedy for sinusitis and chronic hay fever.

The leaves and flowers are the most helpful part of the plant to use when treating upper-body imbalances such as mouth abscesses, sore throat, scrofula, nasal congestion, cough or asthma; a refreshing tea or a tincture will do the job nicely. The homeopathic dose is effective when treating seasonal allergies or sensitivity to dander –especially feline. The roots of Solidago taken as a decoction or in tincture form are more appropriate to use when treating lower-body or deep-seated imbalances, such as gout, diarrhea, menstrual troubles and kidney or bladder problems. Famed herbalist Nicolas Culpepper wrote, “The decoction also helps to fasten the teeth that are loose in the gums.” This is of particular interest to me because according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Kidneys rule the bones and teeth. Goldenrod is particularly helpful for the Water Element, not only for its diuretic and cleansing effect on the bladder and kidneys; Solidago can help with infections and inflammation as well as stones and gravel. In addition to its heat clearing and soothing properties, Goldenrod is also fortifying; it can help to boost Kidney Qi, the physical energy that governs the organ’s functions, and enrich the Yin, a moistening, receptive, nourishing quality. Solidago can even somewhat nourish the precious “Essence” or “Jing” -the very foundation from which we grow and thrive- that is stored energetically within the Kidneys. We inherit our Essence from our parents (ultimately all of our ancestors), and we are born with a fixed amount. I like to call this Kidney Essence a “trust fund;” one could spend carefully, budget wisely and save for a rainy day in order to make even a meager inheritance last a long time. Some may be privileged enough to have inherited great genetic riches, but it is quite easy to squander a fortune! For our body’s daily requirements we utilize energy (Qi) that we receive through food, water, rest, air and relationships (obvi-

ously it’s imperative to seek the highest quality in all of these lifesustaining requirements). We use our Essence to fill in the gaps when we can’t rely upon our steady income of Qi and we may never be aware that we are using it. Our Kidneys also help to process our emotional toxins, so when we experience extreme stress, frayed nerves, repressed or excessive emotions and cease to take proper care of ourselves, our inheritance gets spent. This is where the spiritual and energetic benefits of Goldenrod can help us the most. The name Solidago means “to make whole” which not only refers to her value as a wound healer, but also to her ability to facilitate our recovery from emotional trauma. Deep grief and poignant loss can leave us broken and scarred, in need of potent healing; Goldenrod can help us to mend these painful injuries to our heart and soul. The fragrance, color, and form of the whole spiritual expression of Goldenrod are hopeful and strength-giving beyond any others I know. A single spike is sufficient to heal unbelief and melancholy. – John Muir Heartrending ordeals can leave us fractured and lost, searching for the way back to our personal center. It is said that the Druids once used the stiff stalks of Solidago as divining rods because the plant would always help locate hidden treasures such as fresh, drinkable water or buried gold and silver. Dowsing for lost objects can include our own search for the path back to self. We may lose our faith; we may find that our strength to endure is flagging; we may feel that we cannot take another step and that’s when the staff of goldenrod can be our support. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Goldenrod offers to fortify our reserves and assures us that we can hold on just a little longer. Herbalist Matthew Wood says that Goldenrod gives us determination so we may “endure to reach the goal.” The Ojibwe described the formation of the roots as gripping the earth in preparation for the difficult times ahead. The promise of rebirth, abundance and found riches is just ahead upon the Path… yes, that’s the one… The Path back to Your own Heart. Hang in there. You can do it.

Supplements 101

Michael Dworkin, P.D., M.S. Erika Dworkin, Dip. C.N. (Pend.)

The All-Important Multi-Purpose Multivitamin

W

ould you like to supplement your not-always-optimal diet with vitamins, but don’t know where to begin? Would you prefer not to take a lot of pills? If you’d rather not take separately each of the vitamins you may need, a high-quality multivitamin is probably a good place to start.

The Traditional Perspective Two Harvard Medical School physicians reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, 2002) that “all adults” should take vitamin supplements because evidence has shown that insufficient vitamin intake is a risk factor for chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and cancer. While vitamin supplementation is viewed as an inadequate substitute for a good diet [generally, low in saturated fat (in beef, pork, lamb, and duck), sugar, sodium, and processed foods; high in lean protein (in fish, chicken, turkey, soy, eggs, and whey), mono- and polyunsaturated fats, vegetables, and fruits/berries], there is a general concern that most American adults maintain diets of insufficient nutritional value. Conventional medicine thus recognizes that “a large proportion of the population needs supplements of more than one vitamin.” Although most traditional physicians do not prescribe vitamin regimens to resolve health conditions, they often do recommend that their patients at least take a daily multivitamin in accordance with the JAMA guideline. Those with limited backgrounds in nutrition often recommend multivitamins that provide the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), the level of intake of essential nutrients that the federally chartered Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine deems to be adequate to prevent a nutrient deficiency. The optimal nutrient intake levels are actually much higher than 100% of the RDA.

but generally do not contain therapeutic doses that fully support specific health conditions. A large variety of convenient multivitamins are available to suit a wide range of needs. The most basic formulas, which come in assorted potencies, contain water soluble vitamins (including the B-vitamins and Vitamin C, which readily leave the body), fat soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E and K), and minerals, which support or form our body tissues, bones, nerves, and blood. More complex options may offer age-, gender-, or condition-specific herbs (e.g., saw palmetto, vitex, or dong quai) and nutriceuticals, and/or vegetable/ green foods (e.g., spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass) or high-antioxidant fruits (e.g., açai, mangosteen, blueberries, strawberries, pomegranates). They may address concerns such as those related to prostate, breast, urinary tract, or heart health. There are also options that contain

nutrients derived strictly from whole or raw foods, or are synthesized in a laboratory (absorbed and utilized like food when taken with food). Finally, you can select from tablet or capsule formulations that can call for taking one, or up to as many as six, pills per day. The cost for a quality multivitamin can generally range from under $10 to approximately $35 per month, or roughly .33 cents to $1.16 per day. To determine the right multi for you, consider whether you: (1) prefer capsules (generally considered easier to swallow and digest); (2) may lack certain dietary nutrients (deficiencies can be determined from tests); (3) would like extra support for a particular aspect of your health; (4) are willing to take more than one pill per day; and/or (5) expect to feel different from taking the supplement. Keep in mind that men and women require different vitamins, at different times in their lives, in different amounts. In our experience,

multivitamins containing high-potency BComplex, ample amounts of antioxidants (including Vitamins A, C, and E, selenium), and probiotics (ideally taken separately as a refrigerated supplement), have the greatest noticeable impact on the energy and immunity of those individuals who generally maintain poor diets and are unaccustomed to taking high-quality vitamins.

The ABCs of Multivitamins Below are listed some of the more basic, but critically important, nutrients included in multivitamins, along with their principal functions. Since the scope of this article permits only a limited discussion of multivitamin components, we urge you to research others of interest to determine if they may benefit you.

Vitamin A/Beta Carotene Principal Functions: an antioxidant that supports vision (prevents night blindness); supports skin health (prevents acne, especially when taken with zinc picolinate); slows the aging process; and boosts the immune system against viruses (colds, flu, warts) and cancer (especially cervical cancer). Special Notes: 25,000 i.u. / day can be taken safely, but daily doses exceeding 100,000 i.u. can be toxic to the liver, where Vitamin A is stored; antibiotics, laxatives and some cholesterol-lowering drugs interfere with Vitamin A absorption; 10% of beta carotene (which is not stored in/toxic to the liver) converts to Vitamin A as the body needs it.

B Vitamins Include Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin/Niacinamide (B3) (cholesterol balancing; stress/anxiety), Pantothenic Acid (B5) (adrenal gland support), B12 (red blood cell builder; nervous system protec-

38

September 2010

tion), Biotin (hair/skin/nails support), Inositol (sleep, stress/anxiety), and Folic Acid (cardiovascular support). Principal Functions: these watersoluble vitamins maintain healthy nerves, skin, hair, eyes, mouth, digestive system, and brain function; can alleviate stress/ anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Special Notes: B vitamins should be taken together in the same doses, after which higher doses of single B vitamins can be added to a regimen; all drugs (including antibiotics), alcohol, stress, and caffeine can cause B vitamin deficiencies, and a deficiency in one B vitamin often indicates a deficiency in others.

Vitamin C Principal Functions: an antioxidant that is required for hundreds of metabolic functions; supports tissue growth/repair, adrenal gland function, and gum health; can reduce asthma/allergy symptoms and the length or severity of the common cold; increases the absorption of iron. Special Notes: all drugs (including analgesics, antidepressants, anticoagulants and oral contraceptives), alcohol, and smoking can reduce body levels of Vitamin C; nonacidic/buffered Ester-C is four times more bioavailable than regular Vitamin C.

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) Principal Functions: this fat-soluble vitamin-hormone protects the skin against premature aging (especially when applied topically); boosts immunity, especially against breast and colon cancer; enhances calcium absorption and reduces bone loss; provides mood support at daily minimum levels of 5,000 i.u. Special Notes: Vitamin D must be taken with calcium; intestinal, liver and gallbladder disorders, antacids, some cholesterol-lowering drugs, and steroids/cortisone interfere with Vitamin D absorption.

www.naturalnutmeg.com

Vitamin E

(100% Natural Mixed Tocopherols): Principal Functions: this fat soluble antioxidant prevents some cancers and cardiovascular disease; improves circulation by thinning the blood; required for tissue repair; minimizes PMS and peri/menopausal symptoms; can prevent scarring. Special Notes: Vitamin C regenerates Vitamin E; take Vitamin E and iron separately; consult your physician before taking Vitamin E with an anticoagulant drug such as Coumadin/Warfarin.

Vitamin K Principal Functions: required for blood clotting; essential for bone formation and repair, and thus inhibits osteopenia, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis; assists in the storage of glucose in the liver, thus promoting healthy liver function and blood sugar levels. Special Notes: Vitamin K is contraindicated with blood thinning drugs; antibiotics increase the need for Vitamin K.

Conclusion Multivitamins are certainly not a panacea, but they are a great, and relatively easy and inexpensive, first step toward proper nutrition. Try experimenting with different brands and formulas until you find one that feels like it is making a difference. If you suffer from a chronic condition, consider consulting a clinical nutrition expert for a nutritional supplements regimen beyond a multivitamin that can support and advance your healing process.

enn, a mother of two, called my office one day and told me that her son Rick was overmedicated and listless, losing weight, and doing poorly in school. He had been variously diagnosed with depression, attention deficit disorder and irritable bowel syndrome, and was medicated by three different specialists. Now Jenn wanted my opinion as a naturopathic doctor. She arrived looking distressed, accompanied by her sullen, red haired son. After they sat down in front of my desk, Jenn said, “I’m a single mother and got laid off six months ago. I have to work two jobs now, so Rick has to fend for himself most of the day.” Rick avoided my eyes as his mother talked, as if he were embarrassed. Jenn continued, “The other morning I looked down and realized that my 10 year old son was on more medications than my mother at 75, and I just freaked out. Plus, he doesn’t seem to be getting any better, just worse.” Rick was suffering from many of the modern ailments of children and young people in today’s world and was being treated with a powerful drug cocktail that included Ritalin and Paxil. Both drugs possess strong side effects; in concordance they could have effects not just on his mood, but behavior, hunger levels, energy, and mental skills. Naturopathic medicine doesn’t look at only one aspect of a patient’s life but the whole picture. Powerful pharmaceuticals were certainly part of Rick’s equation. But what about how he lived and ate? Jenn said, “I try to buy him healthy food but I can’t make him eat it. I work all day and he’s at school.” Rick’s self reported diet was typical of many children’s: A sugar filled pop tart, with orange drink for breakfast. A slice of pizza or two at noon with cookies and soda. A frozen dinner at night with ice cream and more soda. The lack of nutrients, along with the sugar and fat load in this diet, were certainly problematic, and there was also not a single fruit or vegetable to be found in Rick’s diet. And it was laden with synthetic additives and colorants that have been implicated in ADD, among other disorders. Rick’s most serious illness was irritable bowel, which kept him from playing sports. What was he eating that was triggering bowel attacks in a boy so young? I decided we would first try a Genetic Diet, which removes foods that Rick’s body uniquely attacks as foreign. Our immune system decides if things are friend or foe, and based on our DNA, we may attack something that is entirely benign. Many people get strep throat, but some are strep carriers, and because of their DNA, will never get strep infections. With one simple blood test we can discover the foods that Rick’s immune system attacks, and creates Rick’s symptoms. The blood tests revealed that Rick’s trigger was gluten, which was in virtually every meal he ate. I helped Jenn come up with a gluten free diet that avoided refined wheat breads and all white products, which Jenn substituted with brown rice and spelt. Since

Jenn suspected that she had the same problem she decided to follow this diet herself. This turned out to have a variety of benefits. She and Rick ate together for the first time in years, they ate healthy non-processed food and they saved money by eating at home. This diet also rid his body of additives and food colors that have been implicated in ADHD and mood. It was a win-win situation. Surprisingly, Rick stuck with the diet and was even agreeable to taking his mother’s healthy lunches to school. Why? I saw the answer for myself when he arrived for his two month follow up. When I saw Rick after eight weeks on a healthy diet I almost didn’t recognize him. His pallor was gone, his face had filled out and so had his body, and he had stopped taking Ritalin. “Why is that?” I asked him. “I don’t feel like I need it anymore. I can pay attention pretty well now. I told my other doctor – he was surprised but he didn’t argue about it.” Jenn on the other hand looked as if a sub-layer of fat had melted off her body. She also seemed happier and more alive. “Get this – Rick’s playing soccer! And it was his idea.” As I listened to her talk, I thought –this is the power of food. It is not simply our body’s fuel, without which we could not survive. It also possesses great power for our physical and mental well-being. As the French gastronomist Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said, "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.' Dietary change is the core lifestyle modification in naturopathic medical practice. The easiest, least expensive, and most effective intervention you as a parent can make to your child’s health is through “real” foods, which are often the miracle cure for numerous childhood disorders. This is an area of everyday life that you can act on right now – without a prescription or special expertise – just a little guidance. No one diet works for everyone, Atkins, South Beach, the list goes on and on. However when you find your Genetic Diet, you will quickly improve focus, mood, pain, and almost any health condition. For most people, it is their Naturopathic Answer. Dr. Jared Skowron is a national expert on natural medicine for children. Author of Fundamentals of Naturopathic Pediatrics, the most up-to-date book on scientifically proven natural remedies for children’s health conditions, he is also founder of the Pediatric & Autism Clinic at the University of Bridgeport. Dr. Skowron has appeared on Animal Planet, Dogs 101, and lectures nationally on natural medicine for children. He and his wife practice at Harvest Park in Wallingford, CT. See ad on page 9.

Reconnecting Your Personal Energy Grid

T

he practice of Reconnective Healing® was founded in 1991 by Dr. Eric Pearl, a successful chiropractor who lives in the United States. As he applied this new healing technique, Dr. Pearl found that his patients experienced miraculous healings, one after another, of such things as cancers, AIDS-related diseases, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid osteoarthritis, and other serious afflictions. With this discovery Dr. Pearl literally began his journey to introduce and pass this energy to as many people as possible in this world. It is a journey to which he has presently devoted himself. His book The Reconnection®—Heal Others, Heal Yourself gives more details about his journey. In The Reconnection® Dr. Pearl explains the process: “The difference between Reconnective Healing® and The Reconnection® is basically one of intent. The intent of Reconnective Healing® is essentially that of healing, be it physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or on any other level and, of course, to achieve the degree of healing brought forth via Reconnective Healing®, you will to some extent experience reconnection as part of the process. It’s this ‘Reconnection’ that allows Reconnective Healing® to be so dramatically more comprehensive than the healing ‘techniques’ we’ve had up until now.” “The Reconnection® is the umbrella process of reconnecting to the universe that allows for Reconnective Healing® to

take place. These healings and evolutionary frequencies are of a new bandwidth and are brought in via a spectrum of light and information that has never before been present on Earth. It is through The Reconnection® that we are able to interact with these new levels of light and information, and it is through these new levels of light and information that we are able to reconnect.” To gain a better understanding of the process, we can imagine that our personal energy grid is a computer operating system. The Reconnection® and Reconnective Healing® basically upgrade our system exponentially. They awaken dormant DNA so huge amounts of new information can pour into it. Our energy lines connect with what J.J. Hurtak, in his book "The Book of Knowledge, The Keys of Enoch" calls “axiatonal lines” (circuits of higher frequency grids) that open the flow to these higher dimensions. We become capable of receiving light and other information that our system was not able to process before. The Reconnection® links us to a fifthdimensional circulatory system from which the basic energies for the renewal functions of the human energy system are drawn. Originally, each of us had twelve strands of DNA that wove us into the universe. Now we function on fewer strands, and most of us perceive of ourselves as separate from creation. The Reconnection® regenerates these dormant strands of DNA, and ties us back into the universe and its meridian, or

www.naturalnutmeg.com

axiatonal, lines. The meridian lines (sometimes also called the acupuncture lines) of the human body are also connected to the grid lines that encircle the planet, and they cross at acknowledged power places such as Machu Picchu, Stonehenge, and Sedona. These grid lines were designed to continue out and connect humans to an even larger grid that links into the entire universe. Over time we became disconnected from these axiatonal lines. The Reconnection® reactivates the axiatonal lines, and this process allows for the exchange of light codes and information. These lines allow one to gain access to and make use of higher universal frequencies of living light in order to regenerate and renew the body, mind, spirit, and evolution. They also raise our vibration so that we are able to maintain the higher frequencies, enabling us to reconnect to all of creation and universal consciousness. This process is explained more fully in Hurtak’s "The Book of Knowledge, The Keys of Enoch." We are multi-dimensional beings, living in a sea of light. Scientists speak of the Zero Point Field, mystics of the ‘sea of light’. Both are alluding to the ocean of energy in which we live, move, and have our being. Both agree that each particle in this field—humans, plants, animals, stars, galaxies—is connected with every other particle in it. Not only are we connected, but we are multi-dimensional at the same time: that is, we exist across a broad spectrum of finer and higher frequencies beyond our three dimensional existence. As we reconnect and awaken to the depths of the Light that we are, we begin to be aware of these various dimensions. It is impossible to describe the awakenings, knowings, insights, ahas!, connections, or quantum leaps in knowledge that occur when we receive, or are awakened to, more Light, or to the greater, vaster Being that we are. The Reconnection® is about restoring ourselves to spiritual wholeness. It is about releasing or removing the blocks or interferences that have kept us separate from our intrinsic perfection. It is about restructuring our DNA and our reconnection to the universe on a new level. Reconnective Healing® is a form of healing that has come to this planet for the very first time. It reconnects us to the full-

ness of the universe even as it reconnects us to the fullness of our being and of who we are. It is thought to be able to reconnect us to the universe and to our very essence, not just through a new set of healing frequencies, but through possibly an entirely new bandwidth, the existence of which has been clearly demonstrated in practice as well as in scientific laboratories. Research is showing that Reconnective Healing® triggers significant changes in brain activity, (via EEG scans), and heart activity, (via ECG scans), in both the practitioner and the patient during healing sessions. Measurements confirm that Reconnective Healing® practitioners can emit and transmit an increased amount of light and other electromagnetic frequencies around their bodies. In lab studies, Reconnective Healing® practitioners have been shown to affect changes in DNA, helping plants to heal after being shocked or damaged. Many top doctors and medical researchers at hospitals and universities are doing new clinical studies and laboratory testing on Reconnective Healing®. According to studies using a random event generator, Reconnective Healing® seems to move things into a state of organization and ease. Each person’s experience with Reconnective Healing® is unique; the healing can take place on a spiritual, mental, emotional and physical level. A practitioner initiates these highly palpable frequencies at the beginning of a session and continues to work with patients in a multidimensional way long after the session has ended, facilitating a return to a state of balance on every level. The Reconnection® is about connecting our personal energy grid system (which includes such things as acupuncture lines, subtle anatomy, and chakras) with the energy grid system of the greater universe. When we connect with the greater energy grid, we receive an influx of light and information that completely transforms our body, mind, and spirit. Cheaper, Better, Greener Cleaning

M

ost commercial cleaning products are made of toxic substances such as artificial colors and fragrances and harsh cleansing agents like bleach, ammonia and acids. Their ingredients can off-gas toxic fumes that irritate eyes and lungs (children and pets are most at risk), and be absorbed through your skin. Many cleaners also contain antibacterial agents that can actually make bacteria stronger. Petrochemicals and other ingredients used in some commercial detergents may cause itching, sneezing, and allergy problems and can be absorbed into your skin from the residue that remains on sheets, towels, and clothing. Many toxic cleaners cannot be processed by septic systems or sewage treatment and eventually pollute soil and water supplies. With a little up-front preparation (1/2 hour at the grocery store and 1/2 hour of mixing up your own cleaners), you can have a house that will make your motherin-law proud; almost as importantly, be safe for you, your family and your pets; and save you enough money to take your wife to lunch every month. Ingredients for Green Cleaning • White vinegar • Lemon juice • Baking soda • Castile soap • Tea tree oil • Olive oil • Washing soda • Reusable dusting cloths • Empty plastic spray bottles and jars with tops • Plastic bristle scrub brush and/or dobie-type of sponge • Permanent marker to label each container • Hot water. Hot water with a few drops of castile soap can take care of a lot. Perfect for wiping down cabinets and floors, and a cup of water placed in a microwave and cooked for 2 minutes will steam the microwave, making it much easier to wipe off the spaghetti sauce… My Cleaning Kit: I keep these cleaners in a bucket that I carry from room to room. Bottle of Castile Soap, shaker of Baking Soda, spray bottle of 5% white distilled vinegar, window/mirror cleaner spray bottle (recipe follows), all purpose spray bottle (recipe follows), furniture polish (recipe follows), Dobie sponge, plastic bristle scrub brush (which I hardly ever need), reusable cloths. Vinegar (spray bottle): Straight 5 percent white vinegar. Keep one spray bottle in your kitchen - spray your cutting board after dinner and rinse it in the morning. Keep a second bottle in your cleaning kit. Straight vinegar deodorizes; kills most molds, bacteria and germs; and is great for cleaning the toilet and the shower curtain. Just spray it on and wipe or rinse it off.

Dish Soap: 1 cup castile soap, ¼ cup water. 1 drop bergamot essential oil (from a health food store) Toilet Bowl: Spray vinegar around the bowl, sprinkle your toilet brush with baking soda, and scrub. Windows & Mirrors (spray bottle): 1/41/2 teaspoon castile soap, 3 tablespoons vinegar, 2 cups water. For stubborn fingerprints, use a dab of rubbing alcohol and a dry cloth. All-Purpose Spray Cleaner (spray bottle): A few drops of castile soap, 2 cups water. Optional: add a 1/2 teaspoon washing soda* use hot water, and shake to mix if you need a stronger cleaner. Furniture Polish (container with lid): The petroleum distillates and solvents in most commercial furniture polishes are reported to be highly neurotoxic. 1/2 teaspoon oil, such as olive, or better yet, jojoba, a liquid wax that doesn’t go rancid (either of these ingredients will condition the wood so it doesn’t dry out). 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar or fresh lemon juice (pulls the dirt out of the wood). Lemon Oil Duster (container with lid): Commercial lemon oil may contain petroleum distillates. Contact herbalists for pure sources of lemon oil. Traditionally, lemon oil has been used for furniture because it is so lubricating and antiseptic. 10 drops lemon oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, a few drops olive oil or jojoba. Sinks, Tubs, Tile, and Pots & Pans (mix on the spot): Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda and a little castile soap. Scoop onto a sponge or mesh cleaning pad (like a Dobie or a plastic mesh onion bag tied in a knot) and scrub. It’s nonabrasive, rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit. It works almost as well without the castile soap. I keep a shaker bottle of baking soda at the kitchen sink and one in my cleaning kit, and I buy the huge box of baking soda to refill the shaker. Carpet Deodorizer: Sprinkle baking soda around the room. If you like, add a little dried crushed lavender. Allow it to sit for about 30 minutes, and then vacuum. For a full list of recipes, including oven cleaner, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, stain removers, solutions for mold and clogged drains, etc., or if you have “green cleaning” recipes to share, I’d love to see them! write to deb@naturalnutmeg.com!
