I just can’t understand why the so called expert in the field of diabetes (my endocrinologist) had no clue how to treat me, he just knew how to put me on more useless medication instead of getting to the root of the problem like Dr. A.” ~Marcus C. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

or many of us September signals back to school and back in the groove of focusing on our work and achieving goals. It’s always a little melancholy for me because summer is my favorite season and I hate to see it go. And while I do love many things that fall brings (crisp mornings, gorgeous foliage, the smell of fallen leaves, my favorite holiday - Halloween, and my favorite kind of beer – Pumpkin!), it’s also a reminder to me that winter is not far behind and I am NOT a cold weather person.

What does get me excited though, is the opportunity to refocus on my goals for the year and reflect on what I’ve already accomplished. This month we asked the question – “What’s one dream you’ve seen fulfilled?” This was a hard question to answer for me because I’ve been lucky enough to have a number of dreams fulfilled. Of course starting this magazine and Essential Living Maine magazine was a huge dream that came to fruition for me, and I’m so grateful for all of the advertisers, writers and readers like you who have supported us for almost 10 years! Another dream that I fulfilled in my career was speaking for a direct marketing company on a stage in a coliseum filled with close to 20,000 people – that was a surreal experience and definitely one of the most exciting times in my life. On a personal level, my biggest dream was to have a partner that I could travel with and work from anywhere in the world and that is happening now! This month we are off to Italy and Spain for a month long trip where we’ll be exploring: hiking in the Dolomites and Cinque Terre, wine and agritourism in Tuscany, tapas in Barcelona and Palma and of course the amazing food everywhere! We’ll keep you updated on all of the amazing places we find on our Facebook and Instagram sites – please LIKE us at https://www.facebook.com/NaturalNutmegMagazine/ and find us on Instagram at naturalnutmegmagazine.com. In keeping with the theme of fulfilling your dreams – I hope you enjoy the inspirational article by Dr. Ayelet Connell and Kristen Werblow – “You Can Have it All in Life.” Also, if you’re a parent, don’t miss the informative articles by Dr. Fasullo on “Childhood Vaccinations” and Lara O’Neil’s great article on “What Your Pediatrician May Not Explain.” Lastly, I think you’ll find my interview with spiritual teacher and medium, James Van Praagh on “Death is the Greatest Illusion of All” to be fascinating and eye-opening! Don’t miss him at the Ridgefield Playhouse on October 1st! In Health and Happiness,

dream you’ve fulfilled? What’s one

Erica Morawski

This may sounds cheesy, but one dream I’ve seen fulfilled was owning a pet. As a kid, it seems like all your friends talk about at the lunch table are their pets. Each day, it would feel as though a new lunch mate was getting a dog or a hamster. I remember begging my parents for a pet for weeks, months, and what felt like years. Finally, they caved and my family bought our very first pet: my cat Jack-o-lantern-- Jack for short. Jack lived with us for 16 long years, and I can honestly say that having a pet in my life was one of the most fulfilling experiences. As a kid, I learned how to love for, and take care of, another living thing. Having a pet instilled in me so many values about life, animals, and nature. I am still grateful that I begged hard enough (with the help of my sisters, to their credit) and that my parents finally gave in, because without Jack in my life, I would not have experienced the learning and joys that come with taking care of an animal.

I have loved music since I was a child and always wanted to be in a rock band. In 2007 I started my own band called Black Rose and was the lead singer for a number of years! I am no longer singing, due to other commitments, but still have people ask when I’m going to start a band again because they miss hearing me! I tell them some day because if I made it happen once then I can make it happen again!

Alexa Morawski

One dream I’ve seen fulfilled was venturing abroad to Italy. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated by the sinking city of Venice. As I grew older, and got into cooking, it was no longer just the water-filled streets of Venice that interested me, but all of Italy and each region’s cuisine. When I was 18, I had the chance to go travel around to several parts of Italy, tasting the unique foods of several regions. My last stop before returning home was Venice, and both the food and the flooded streets filled every one of my expectations—and then some. My new dream: go back to Italy!

NEXT QUESTION: What’s one place you’d love to travel to and why? In 3rd grade I started taking private lessons on the clarinet and saxophone with my Uncle, a music teacher in our town. When it was time to consider a major to pursue in college, I had become a pretty accomplished player. I decided against music performance, but needed to satisfy my desire to continue to be involved in music. After college, I started my own band. It was always my vision to provide challenging horn-oriented funky music to patrons that differed from what they would hear from all of the other bands in the area – music they might have forgotten about, but so connected with. From humble beginnings, during my 25 year tenure we played all the best clubs in the area and were a highly sought after group for weddings and corporate functions. The band helped me balance a very demanding corporate job while keeping music in my life… a dream come true!

Diane Hayden

One dream I’ve seen fulfilled is creating and building Natural Nutmeg Magazine and Essential Living Maine Magazine! After years of working for corporations, I realized that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. In the last 10 years, I’ve been blessed to create something that would help thousands of people, allow me to work from anywhere in the world, make my own hours and give me the ability to earn an unlimited income. Entrepreneurship is not easy but it’s been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Massage Cupping… Michael Phelps’ Olympic Advantage

ecent Olympic coverage of Michael Phelps’ “strange spots” has brought attention to massage cupping, an amazing treatment that has been in existence for thousands of years. Massage cupping is a relaxing, pain free technique that is used for a number of issues including sore muscles and inflammation. People looking for the results of a deep tissue massage, but not the pressure or pushing would benefit from massage cupping. The treatment is based on the common practice of cupping therapy, an ancient therapy seen in hieroglyphics from as far back as the Egyptians. Glass cups and suction are used to loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue while opening lymphatic pathways. Tense muscles are easily softened without discomfort. The treatment is extremely relaxing and often induces sleep during the treatment. Massage cupping also encourages circulation and relieves inflammation by drawing blood from the arteries to the capillaries and then returning via the veins to be flushed out. Temporary discoloration of the skin may occur indicating blood has been brought to the surface. These marks are a sign of the release of intense stagnation and will disappear within hours or a few days. Some conditions that respond very well to massage cupping are sluggish digestion, anxiety, tight muscles, scar tissue, restricted circulation, bursitis, arthritis, tendonitis, sciatica, insomnia, and headaches. People with extreme burns and deep scars can also benefit, as it loosens and softens rigid tissue. With all the benefits from massage cupping, there is no need to shy away from receiving the treatment because of the temporary marks it may leave, as there are cupping techniques that offer the same benefit with no marks. Submitted by Melissa Martin Wallace, founder of Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center and Kirby Murawski, LMT, Certified ACE Massage Cupping™ Practitioner. Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center has been offering Massage Cupping for several years with amazing results. If you would like to relieve your sore muscles and give it a try, we are offering $10 off all Massage Cupping treatments until the end of September. Choosing the Best for your Best Friend: Trends in Pet Wellness Products PHOTO CREDIT: BRIAN SAGER PHOTOGRAPHY

By Betsy Kaminski hen I adopted Raleigh – my rescued beagle mix –he was underweight, skittish, and had a backend filled with bird shot. I wanted to make up for his rough past and give him the best life possible, so I set out to learn what I could about canine health and wellness. Many pet owners consider their pets to be family members and are becoming more proactive in caring for their animals.

W

Over the last 15 years, the pet supply industry has expanded with many new, innovative items geared toward wellness – particularly for dogs. Three categories of products are important: premium pet foods and treats, harnesses and products that address orthopedic needs, and toys that stimulate dog’s minds and bodies. Premium foods and treats typically avoid animal-by-products (which are derived from slaughterhouse waste) and wheat (which is a common allergen for dogs). Consumers are becoming more mindful of ingredients and many are choosing brands that are made in the U.S. with locally-sourced or organic ingredients. Some pet owners avoid commercially prepared foods entirely and opt to cook for their dogs, often with the help of a veterinary nutritionist who may suggest supplements such as calcium or fish oil to ensure that a home-cooked diet meets nutritional requirements. Harnesses are becoming preferred over collars for dogs who tend to pull while on the leash. Most harnesses are designed to reduce pressure on the neck, in order to prevent choking or spinal injuries. Manufacturers are becoming more thoughtful in the design of harnesses in order to fit a range of different breeds and sizes. Some companies are also utilizing hemp for harnesses, leashes, and toys. Because hemp is sustainable, durable, washable, and soft it is an excellent choice for pets, owners, and the environment.

Toy options for dogs have grown beyond the basic ball or squeaky toy. Puzzle toys are designed to mentally engage dogs by making them use problem solving skills in order to earn a treat reward. Agility tunnels can be a great tool for adding interest to backyard play. By engaging dogs both physically and mentally, toys can deter destructive behaviors – such as chewing on shoes or furniture— that are often a result of boredom or anxiety. Paying attention to our pets’ needs for exercise and stimulation, also benefits humans by reminding us of the value of play, spending time outdoors, and being more fully present in our lives. Most pet owners can attest to how spending time with their beloved dog or cat can lower stress. The mutually beneficial relationship between people and pets is also well documented in research. Studies show that spending time with pets can decrease obesity, lower blood pressure, increase serotonin levels, and boost the immune system. So, when we do our best to enhance our pets’ health, wellness, and longevity, we enhance our own as well. Betsy Kaminski is co-owner of Raleigh & Co., an independent pet goods store in Greenwich, CT. Raleigh & Co. focuses on highquality, thoughtfully-designed products for dogs, cats, and pet lovers. Raleigh & Co. hosts lectures by veterinarians and pet-care experts on topics such as pet first-aid and pet safety in the home and garden. The store also holds fundraising events for animal-related causes. For more information, please go to raleighpetgoods.com.

The Colorful Side of Collards By Julie Wern

U

nless you grew up in the south, collard greens may be at best mysterious and at worst misunderstood. Most people think of them as a southern specialty that involves hours of cooking with a fatty smoked meat. This association has perhaps contributed to collard’s unfortunate reputation as being tough, unappetizing, and unhealthy. But the reality is far from the truth. While long cooked greens in the southern tradition are a highly flavorful dish, quick cooked collards can be equally delicious and may be more nutritious. Collard leaves need only about ten minutes to cook; stems will take longer. Like kale, collards will retain some texture to them due to the amount of fiber in the leaves. Also like kale, they benefit from a liquid to help them soften and to cook all the way before they burn or stick to a pan. There is some suggestion that prolonged cooking can compromise some of the high nutritional quality of collard greens, so if you are a fan of super long cooked collards, it might be time to try some different methods.

soups and stews, burritos/wraps, rice or grain dishes, and pastas. Blanched leaves can also be wrapped around a filling, as with cabbage in stuffed cabbage rolls.

Like other cooking greens, collards are highly nutritious. They contain high levels of vitamins K, A, C, B2, B6, folate, manganese and fiber and are also a very good source of calcium, iron and protein. There is growing evidence that regular intake of greens, including collards, can reduce cholesterol, cancer risk, and inflammatory response, due in part to their high level of micronutrients like antioxidants.

When shopping for collard greens, choose dark green leaves that are not yellowed or wilted. Store in plastic in the refrigerator for up five days. Wash well to remove any dirt clinging to the leaves prior to cooking. Thinner, younger stems will be more tender than larger, older ones. Rather than throw them away, use the toughest stems in your next batch of homemade vegetable broth!

I was surprised to learn that compared to kale, collards are significantly lower in calories (only about 50 calories per cooked cup) and have almost double the protein. Also, among the most familiar greens (kale, chard, and spinach) collards have the highest amount of fiber. When preparing collards, think kale. Like kale, collard leaves can be eaten raw as in thinly sliced collard coleslaw. The broad leaves can even be used as a substitute for bread in wraps or rice paper in summer rolls (see recipe on next page). For cooked preparations collards can be sautéed, blanched, steamed, or boiled. Cooked collards are a great source for omelets, frittatas, casseroles, 12

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Fresh vegetable rolls are a great way to enjoy the end of season harvest. Collard leaves make a tasty, low calorie, and healthful substitute for rice paper in these beautiful rolls. Collard Veggie Rolls with Red Curry Peanut Sauce Serves 4 Ingredients: • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter • 1/2 cup vegetable broth • 1/4 cup light or regular coconut milk • 1 teaspoon coconut aminos, or 1/2 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce • 2-3 teaspoons Thai Red Curry Paste, to taste • 1 teaspoon honey • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 4 large collard leaves, washed and patted dry • 1/2 medium cucumber, cut into thin strips • 1 medium carrot, cut into thin strips • 1/4 large red bell pepper, cut into thin strips • 8 sugar snap peas, thinly sliced lengthwise • 1 scallion, thinly sliced lengthwise and cut into 2-3 crosswise pieces • a few cilantro or basil leaves 1. Make Sauce: In a small saucepan, whisk peanut butter, broth, coconut milk, coconut aminos, curry paste and honey over medium heat until smooth and bubbly. If sauce is too thick, thin with more broth or water. If it is too thin, reduce over low heat until it reaches desired consistency. Remove from heat and stir in lime juice. Cool to room temperature or refrigerate for later use.

2. Make rolls: Cut the stem off up into about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of each leaf (otherwise stem will be too thick and you will have difficulty rolling up the filling). Place leaf on a work surface with stem end facing away from you. On side nearest you, place a stack of the vegetable filling ingredients in the center of the leaf right up to the edge closest to you. Roll leaf up around filling and roll one rotation. Fold in sides and continue to roll, burrito style, until you reach the end of the leaf. Cut roll in half and place on a serving plate. Serve with room temperature or cold sauce. Other potential Filling Ingredients: sprouts, avocado, shrimp, tofu, jicama, mango

All Your Questions about Spirituality, Energy and Health Answered!

I

am grateful for the opportunity to help people experience the world I feel we are moving through and stepping into. This column is question and answer format to provide those interested, a chance to ask questions about spiritually, energetics, health and life and how it can all come together in a grounded, functional and applicable way, so the reader can navigate life with peace, joy and compassion in a world that is changing so fast.

I was having a conversation with a healer friend/mentor of mine and we began talking about vaccines and the potential residue that can remain in the body. He was sharing how vaccine residue consists of not only the microbe of focus in the vaccine but the possible additions of antibiotics, chemicals/metals, and animal by-products that may be present in the composition and how, if these items begin settling in the body, they can significantly affect those areas.

Every month I welcome you to submit your mind, body, spirit questions directly to me at questions.rondamico@gmail.com or through my website at www.rondamico.net.

For me all things have an ‘energetic fingerprint’ and vaccines are no different. Once I become aware of this fingerprint the necessary energy fields and/or frequency ranges can be created to release them from the body and energy fields. As the vaccine residue is cleared, the affected areas are then checked for damage and imbalances, which are then corrected energetically and the natural frequency of the affected areas are re-established. Once this occurs the areas begin to function in their natural state. The toxins may not always be cleared at one time. The greatest influence affecting the rate of release is how quickly the individual’s body is able to release without creating a Herxheimer Reaction (a short-term detoxification reaction in the body) as well as how stable the systems are and the ability of the systems to move through the changes without creating more stress to an already stressed person.

Q: I’ve been hearing quite a bit about vaccines both positive and negative. What have you seen in your practice and how do you approach addressing this? A: It has only been over the past few years that I have been actively aware of vaccine related issues in the human body. The scope of this response is not to offer definitive answers or tell you what choices to make, but to help you understand what I have been finding, how I have been addressing it and some options to look into so that you are able to make an informed choice. The following is an example of how I came to noticing vaccine influences in people’s health. A few years ago a client came in with her son who was diagnosed with moderate autism. The symptoms of autism began to surface very shortly after his first round of vaccinations and became progressively worse in the months to follow. She did a great deal of research on autism and what was thought to influence its onset and began following various dietary and holistic treatment protocols to begin helping him. The dietary changes helped with some of the symptoms. Holistic approaches of IV chelation therapy, hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments, various supplements and cranial-sacral therapy also helped, but only to a point. Initial and subsequent blood tests for metals was indicating that the levels were decreasing but not fully clearing. When I began working with him the focus was to release presenting physical, emotional, and energetic traumas as well as any environmental and chemical influences to him as a whole. As he began releasing the various forms of trauma from the systems, it was easier for his body to release the toxins and their influences. About six months into treatment a blood retest for metals was done showing levels had significantly decreased. We began noticing improvements in behavior, motor improvement, decrease in ‘stimming’ and improved eye contact.

14

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Once this new information was brought into the treatment protocol, more affected areas became apparent. As these areas began to clear, physical damage was corrected (through energy work, homeopathic and herbal remedies and supplements). Held emotions in the brain, body and energy fields were released, as well as birth and other physical traumas. With these additional focuses, significant changes were observed at home, school, and with the social skills therapist he sees regularly, who specializes in helping children with autism. As this child continues to heal he is now able to catch-up and progress developmentally. I say this because the areas of the brain that were being influenced by the toxins are areas of development (mental, emotional, physical motor) that were not able to naturally develop when, and at the rate they could have naturally. His systems are playing catch-up. Meaning he is now rapidly moving through stages of development at age ten that would have been experienced at ages four through eight. This is just one example of how things can be addressed by looking beyond what is known to expand into more of embracing and walking into ‘what Is’..

Living Awake in the Real World: A Shaman’s Perspective By Juliette Taylor

I

’m all about living awake, however, I understand that we all, me included, live in the real world. We have children, jobs, husbands, wives, parents, friends, mortgages, rent, car payments…the list goes on and on. We live in the real world with real situations and real issues, challenges, and hopefully even real happiness. It would be so nice to be able to go away for a year or two and live in an ashram, travel the world, learn to cook from a master chef, wear a bikini without a single dimple on my a**! We live in the here and now. We are in the here and now. We are the here and now. And yet, most of us live unconsciously, asleep, and either in the past or in the future. We are living surrounded by energy fields and bring in or cast away energy which then creates our lives…daily. My job as a modernday shaman is to guide you through to living awake in the real world here and now. I was just reading the Goop blog by Gwenyth Paltrow and there was an interview about another shaman, Durek. I mention this Q and A blog because it is most likely the most succinct description of three different types of energy: physical, emotional, and spiritual; how it affects us in our daily lives and the shaman’s role in guiding us through to living awake. It’s worth repeating here: “There are different types of energy sources: some are physical, some are emotional, and some are spiritual…Physical energy is generated by the response of the environment—what you take in by nourishment, and what you expose yourself to as far as chemicals, compounds, and electrical currents. These energies are either giving to your body or depleting your body. In scientific terms, these are known as free radicals, EMFs, and toxic chemical compounds that are breaking down your body’s system, and contaminating it with low-grade food, bad air quality, and environmental pollution. 16

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Mental (emotional) energy is based on electrical currents, which are stimulated by knowledge and data that affect your neurological system, your neurons, and your nervous system. If the mental stimulation you are receiving is not of the same quality as the high-frequency current that releases certain congruent chemicals in your body, it will create an adverse effect on your emotional quality as a human being, therefore infecting your endocrine system, your hormonal system, your immune system, and all other organs and tissues that are in your body. And then there are the spiritual energies... Shamans have returned to help facilitate this lost information. Your world is made up of spiritual energies: the ones that are in lower form are based on fear, guilt, judgement, doubt, shame, hate, and anger; the ones in the higher energy forms are based on love, compassion, bliss, elation, playfulness, joy, ecstasy, pleasure, and every higher vibration that connects you to unconditional love and acceptance. There are spirits that support those energies—as human beings, we see it as duality, while in the spirit world we see it as a choice. It’s very simple, but you’re either creating or you’re destroying in every aspect of your life, from how you are with your children, to how you are in your relationship, to conversations you’re a part of, to what you’re taking in visually, to what you’re eating, to how you connect with yourself and the inner conversations you have with yourself. Shamanism is about simplicity, and spirituality is, too. If something is not simple and takes a lot of time to figure out, well, I think you get the picture. When you are not honest about what you really want, and when you compromise or make adjustments to who you are in your truth, spirit doesn’t support the lies that you tell yourself, you do. As

a shaman, it is my responsibility to identify the energy sources that are affecting your life, to make a comprehensive understanding of them, and to decide how we are going to expel these poisons from your system, change your belief system, and put you back in space in your life so that you are operating at your highest level.” http://goop.com/ notes-from-a-shaman-moving-negative-energy-and-why-the-world-is-in-upheaval/?utm_ source=bronto&utm_medium=email&utm_ term=All+Dynamic+Links&utm_ content=All+Dynamic+Links&utm_campaign=2016_07_14_newsletter&_bta_tid=0 533348477105472028583962327854758 403097844664407879021974400137429 1460 When we are operating at the highest level life hums along. Life is good! When we change our belief system life opens up. Life is good! When we expel poisons from our lives magic happens. Life is good! When we put space back in our life it moves into the highest vibration. Life is good! I was recently in Italy visiting my sister and my niece and nephew who live in Rome. And I realized something as I looked around me. No Starbucks cups. No looking down and texting. No silence. Eye contact everywhere. And peeking into the corner cafes people were standing up and enjoying their coffees even if they were in a rush. The ones seated were even more leisurely drinking and eating a bite. They were enjoying the present moment. Yeah - I’m sure they have bills to pay, worries about family, vacations, jobs, houses, cars, wives, husbands, kids, lovers, ending or starting relationships. And at that moment. At that very, very precious moment... Life was about being...Not doing.

You Can Have It All in Life By Ayelet Connell, PhD, PT, IMT,C and Kristin Werblow, MA

W

hat does it mean to live our life with purpose and make conscious choices that will guide us towards health and happiness? For many of us, we wake up every morning with aches and pains, and various stresses that follow us through our day. It can feel like we never actually get a break. What if we knew the process to achieve happiness and health? Would we follow the path? Or would we choose to stay where we are because the path seemed too difficult? In theory, or in a storybook, we might think that we would all choose the right path and make conscious choices. But in reality, for many of us, it’s hard to believe that we could get to the ‘pot of gold’ at the end of the rainbow. Hopelessness has affected all of us at one time or another. The cure to hopelessness is faith—having faith that everything will work out well. The knowingness that we will get there and that we deserve to be happy and healthy. The process of faith begins with the belief in ourselves. The belief that we are special and here for a reason. Each of us has been given a unique gift or talent that we bring to this world. By combining our unique gift with the desire to service humanity in some way, we can live our life’s purpose. When living life on purpose, joy and financial abundance flow into one’s life experience. If you knew that you could not fail, would you leap knowing the net would appear? Fear is one of the biggest blocks to work through, but overcoming it will change your life. The mind is more powerful than we can imagine. Our thoughts become our beliefs and our beliefs ultimately become our reality. How do you think and speak? Do you often complain? The more attention that you give something, the stronger it grows. Begin today to appreciate what you have and be eager to see what your future can hold. As you begin to transform your perspectives, your life will begin to shift. Your actions will come into alignment and guide you toward a purpose filled life. First Steps to Having It All in Life Step 1: Change Your Thoughts If you want to live a purpose filled life, the first step begins within. Begin today to change the way you speak and think. Shift the focus from what you do not like, to what you do. Practice as much gratitude as you can.

18

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Step 2: Write Down a One-Year Goal If you were living your ideal life a year from today, how would it look and feel? Write a specific description of your life a year from now. When finished, observe. If you see yourself joyful, what can you do to create joy in your life now? Step 3: Visualize and Feel the Changes You Wish to See Once you have a specific description of what you want to do or how you want your life to be, begin to visualize yourself in an actualized state. Like watching a movie in your mind, see yourself living your dream and generate as many positive feelings as you possibly can. Commit to visualize daily. Step 4: Feel the Energy! To live a life with purpose, it is important to eat and live a clean lifestyle of whole vibrant foods. When we eat foods of this nature, we promote our vitality and the health of our body. We can actually feel the difference when we eat certain foods that are energetic as compared to other foods that are ‘flat’. When we use our intuition to choose the right foods, we feel more energetic. In fact, every choice we make in life can promote our health if chosen with inner guidance and intuition. You cannot change the past, but you can begin to create your future by choosing thoughts, emotions, and actions that are in alignment with what you truly desire. Life is not about luck, but alignment. Begin today by focusing on feeling good and seeing your life as you want it to be. Follow the above steps and experience firsthand your ability to have it all in life. You can do it. Believe it. Are you interested in learning more about ‘Having it All in Life’? Making an Educated Decision on Childhood Vaccinations By Craig Fasullo, ND

“What’s your view on vaccinations?”

I

t’s a question I receive commonly in the office, and I love the opportunity to share a comprehensive, balanced perspective with my patients. The truth is that there is so much information currently available to the public, from a wide variety of sources, and often with no shortage of strong opinion. As a naturopathic physician, my goal in the office is always to offer a clear lens of perspective, with consideration for the medical literature and my own clinical experience. For those parents with some concern or hesitancy regarding immunizations, I offer a wealth of resources and information to help them make decisions that they can feel comfortable with. As stated, it is not uncommon for some people to come in with very strong opinions about vaccinations. While that is certainly understandable, I do find it important to first and foremost go beyond that initial strong response to a more nuanced discussion. Viewing each disease and associated immunization individually allows for a richer understanding, and allows for making educated decisions. It is worth keeping in mind that everyone involved in all aspects of the conversation has the same goal in mind – to keep your child as healthy as possible and minimize risk of serious disease. Throughout this article, I draw from the excellent work of Dr. Robert Sears, whose Vaccine Book and associated website I recommend as required reading for anyone looking to further a balanced informed perspective on the subject. Why are they important? While there are few subjects in medicine quite as charged as that of childhood vaccination, on first pass this might seem somewhat surprising. Consider the numerous diseases that have severely plagued humanity in the past, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, including smallpox, polio, and diphtheria. These very real threats are now non-existent, thanks to the introduction of immunization. Admittedly, it’s quite a complicated conversation, but this fact cannot be denied. Even today, there are many places in the world where the risk of infectious disease is very present, and vaccination efforts are currently underway, saving many lives. Most of us in the United States are lucky to be distanced enough from these life threatening diseases, but it is important to keep this historical perspective. What is a vaccine? Simply put, a vaccine is a prepared substance that creates a protective immunity to a particular disease. The earliest record of vaccination goes back over 1000 years in China, and the modern vaccination effort can be traced to Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine in 1798, followed by Louis Pasteur’s work nearly 100 years later. Immunization research continues to develop with updated recommendations given each year by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC). All vaccines are not created equal, and they are not equally important. As with any medical intervention, each vaccine carries some 20

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

degree of risk, though it is important to balance that risk against risk of the disease itself, along with considering both the health of the individual and the greater local community of people. The current CDC schedule recommends immunization against fourteen diseases by the age of two. Here is a brief description of each disease: Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is a liver-damaging virus that is transmitted through blood or sexual contact. If contracted, there is risk of long term complications, including liver cancer. The virus can be transmitted from an infected mother to her child during the birthing process, though every woman is screened for infection prior to delivery. The vaccine is typically administered to the newborn in the hospital. Rotavirus Rotavirus is a virus that affects the gastrointestinal system, causing fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. It presents similarly to a common stomach flu, but has more severe symptoms that can last longer. It is relatively common, especially within daycare settings. There is no curative treatment other than supportive therapies. Severe cases necessitate hospitalization to avoid dehydration. Numerous infants and small children die annually from rotovirus. Diptheria Diptheria is a bacterium that causes a potentially severe throat infection. It has become very rare since the advent of the vaccine. The diphtheria vaccine is part of the DTaP series. Tetanus Tetanus is a bacterium that causes severe widespread muscle and nerve paralysis. It is found is soil and tainted or rusty metal. It is now quite rare, especially among young children. The tetanus vaccine is part of the DTaP series. Pertussis Pertussis is a bacterium, commonly known as whooping cough. Not to be confused with croup (a more common and more mild childhood upper respiratory condition), pertussis is a relatively severe infection that first presents like the common cold, before worsening into the more aggressive phase consisting of extended coughing fits and difficulty breathing. While treatable at first onset, it often takes many weeks to months to fully recover. Despite the vaccine, pertussis is still very much present, and outbreaks are reported regularly throughout the country. The pertussis vaccine is part of the DTaP series. Haemophilus Influenza type B (Hib) Despite the word influenza, Hib is actually a bacterium which can cause meningitis, blood or brain infection, severe sore throat, or pneumonia. It is quite severe, though thankfully now quite rare since the advent of the vaccination.

Pneumcoccal Disease (PC) Pneumococcus is a bacterium which can cause upper respiratory infections, ear infections, pneumonia, and meningitis. It is much more common than Hib, and while not always as severe, it is the most frequent cause of infant meningitis. Polio Polio is a virus that typically causes a minor upper respiratory infection. In some cases though, the disease invades the nervous system, where it can cause muscle paralysis that can be permanent. The good news is that there has been no polio in the United States since the 1980’s. The vaccine is given to keep it that way. Measles Measles is a virus that causes an upper respiratory infection, along with fever and rash. It is frequently mild, though there is risk of severe complication, including life threatening brain swelling. Incidence has been low, though numbers have increased in recent years. Outbreaks occurring in different parts of the country typically begin with a traveler returning from overseas, as was the case in California in 2015. The measles vaccine is part of the MMR series. Mumps Mumps is a virus that causes upper respiratory infection, along with swelling of the salivary glands below the cheeks. It is typically a mild presentation, but severe complications include swelling of the testicles or ovaries, arthritis, and infection of the heart or brain. It is quite rare, though occasional outbreaks have occurred over the past decade. The mumps vaccine is part of the MMR series. Rubella Rubella is a virus that presents as a fever, rash, and joint aches. It is very mild in nearly all cases. The concern is that a preg-

nant woman who contracts the virus can infect the growing fetus, causing a number of significant birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome. The risk is highest during the first trimester of pregnancy, so screening may not catch it in time. Fortunately, the disease is very rare, with only a handful of cases reported annually. The rubella vaccine is part of the MMR series. Varicella Varicella is the virus that causes chickenpox, which typically presents as a fever along with the classic uncomfortable spotty rash. It is mild to moderate in most cases, though there is the very rare severe complication. As it was introduced in the mid 1990’s, many adults remember getting chickenpox during childhood. Symptoms can become more severe if the illness is contracted in adulthood. The varicella virus can be reactivated later in life in individuals who previously had chickenpox (or the vaccine), and present as shingles. Hepatitis A Hepatitis A is another liver-damaging virus, though infection is typically short lived and long term complication is virtually nonexistent. As compared to hepatitis B, this virus is transmitted through infected stool, and so is elevated risk within a daycare setting. Symptoms in children usually mirror a mild stomach flu, though symptoms can be more severe in older kids and adults. Influenza Influenza is the virus that causes the flu, that annual infection that comes through and infects many people, young and old, each winter season. It is unique among these diseases in that each year the strain of virus is different, so annual immunization is recommended to reduce risk of contracting the illness. Efficacy of the vaccination differs from year to year, as public health officials have to make educated guesses

regarding that year’s strain. Though most people tolerate the flu relatively well, there are deaths every year, most often among infants and the elderly. The most recent news regarding the upcoming 2016-17 flu season is that the FluMist nasal spray is not recommended as it is not as effective as the injected vaccine. Considering All the Factors By considering each disease individually, it becomes obvious the decisions regarding vaccinations for your child should go far beyond a simple sweeping “yes” or “no”. Additionally, there are also the questions of other vaccination ingredients, combination vaccinations vs single administrations, standard scheduling vs alternative scheduling, and of course the weighing of individual risk. Reducing Risk & Supportive Treatments There are some simple steps that everyone should take to minimize the risks associated with any vaccine: 1. First and foremost, ensure that your child is healthy prior to vaccination. If there has been a recent cold or fever, or seems like something might be coming on, go ahead and put it off for a bit. It’s worth waiting for the immune system to get back to a level of normal activity. 2. Breastfeeding is recommended to keep your infant as healthy as possible during the first year, helping to confer additional immunity from mom. 3. As your child gets older, a healthy nutrient-rich diet that limits refined sugars and junk foods is the best way to support a healthy immune system around the times of vaccination and in general. 4. There are a number of supplements that can support healthy immune function and may decrease possible side effects, including vitamin C, vitamin A, and omega-3 fatty acids. Dosage and length of treatment varies, so be sure to consult with your physician. 5. Probiotics have been shown to have significant immune supportive properties, and may help protect against negative effect. A study in adults showed that supplementation with the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium before and after administration of the influenza vaccine lowered rate of contraction of the flu, as well as rate of fever, with immune activity measurably higher in the probiotic group. Talk with your doctor if your child has any history of adverse reaction to vaccination, or if there is any significant history of the same within your family. In our office, we work with parents to discuss all these complicated issues, in order to ensure that they are able to come to well-educated decisions that they feel comfortable with. Supporting the utmost health of each and every child is our top priority. Dr. Fasullo has a family practice in Manchester, CT at Connecticut Natural Health Specialists. Rejuvenate Post Summer Skin with a Peel By Melissa Martin Wallace ost summer is an ideal time for a peel treatment. It will immediately improve your skin in so many ways from lightening sun damage to cleaning out clogged pores. There are many types and brands of peels available. I will be referring to the SkinCeuticals brand of medical grade peels, which range from mild to strong. SkinCeuticals offers advanced skincare that is rooted in research and backed by science, which is personally important to me. I have been using the SkinCeuticals line of professional and at-home products for almost ten years and have seen significant improvement in my client’s skin and my own.

P

It is worth noting that peels should always be administered by a trained professional and should never be purchased online or performed at home. Also, please do not associate peels with the Sex & the City episode we all remember where Samantha looked horribly burned with her skin falling off in sheets after having a peel. That is not at all what happens. Those types of peels are rarely given anymore, as laser technology has replaced them. Q: What is a peel? A: A peel is an amazing treatment that immediately rejuvenates the skin. It is used for anti-aging and for correction. A chemical solution is applied to the skin and its purpose is to remove dead skin cells; stimulate collagen remodeling; improve hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and skin texture. It is one of my favorite treatments because it provides immediate gratification, which is what we all love! But, with subsequent treatments, it provides long term antiaging benefits for women and men, teens to adults. Q: Aren’t chemicals bad? A: The word chemical is scary for many and can prevent people from receiving peels. Most chemical peels are made up of acids, which are naturally derived. Glycolic acid comes from sugar cane, lactic acid from sour milk and salicylic acid from wintergreen. Yes, they are chemicals, but so is just about anything in our homes. If you think about it, anything formulated by a chemist is a chemical, including the hydrogen peroxide and ibuprofen you use. Q: Why would anyone want to have a peel? A: Everyone should have a peel! They improve the skin dramatically and quickly! Peels are an important part of any skincare regimen. They are such a simple solution for anyone interested in anti-aging or acne issues. Results are seen immediately after one treatment, however, a series of 4-6 is recommended if working to correct a specific skin issue.

Q: What does the peel do? A: There are different types of peels for different skin issues. Some people may have acne issues, some hyperpigmentation (dark spot) issues, some clogging, some fine lines, some all of the above. Most peels decongest pores, hydrate skin, reduce photoaging (fade dark spots), improve skin texture and radiance, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and support healthy collagen levels for firmer skin. Q: What will my skin look like after a peel? Should I be nervous? A: No need to be nervous at all! Your skin will look amazing! Some people have minor visible peeling a few days after, but there will be no snake-like shedding after our peels. With our treatments, we provide pre-exfoliation and post light therapy, which squelches peeling and redness, leaving the skin radiant with a healthy rosy glow. Q: Are there any drawbacks to having a peel? A: I wouldn’t say drawbacks, rather precautions. After a peel, direct sun should be avoided for at least three days. Depending on the degree of peel administered, some people may experience light peeling for a few days after a peel, but nothing that isn’t manageable. Q: What should I do after the peel? A: Post-peel and everyday skin home care is important. Specific products should be used for optimal results. Cleanser, toner, serum, repairing or correcting moisturizers and SPF are all important pieces in taking the best care of your skin. It only takes a few minutes each morning and evening to apply the products and trust me, your skin will definitely thank you! Submitted by Melissa Martin Wallace, esthetician and owner of Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center located at 16 Ensign Drive Avon, CT. Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center, was founded in 2007 by Melissa and she has been in the skincare industry since 2001. She and her staff focus on providing natural, non-invasive, customized treatments that are good for your health and your appearance! They are committed to strengthening your skin health and your overall well-being through the use of excellent quality products, backed by science and results. They offer extraordinary services that produce amazing results. See ad on page Peels & Prosecco! Join us Thursday, September 15th anytime from 11am to 6 pm. Feeling Fatigued? Elevated Estrogen Could be the Cause

By Marie Dam, MD en…do you think that your testosterone level may be too low? What about your estrogen level being too high? We normally think of the hormone testosterone as being male and the hormone estradiol (estrogen) as being female, but the truth is we all have them both, amongst other hormones.

M

right. However, a declining testosterone level is usually responsible and you may have been told that your level is “normal and within range”. The good news is that it can be optimized, meaning that the level can be improved upon so that the symptoms are relieved.

Testosterone In men, testosterone is known to give energy, help strength and stamina especially when combined with exercise, and improve sexual interest and response. However, there are other things which are not spoken about as often which are probably the finest gifts a good testosterone level can deliver. They include sharp brain function, that competitive edge feeling, and improvement of every cardiovascular function including lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, to improving your blood sugar. Many men just feel like they may be depressed, getting “that belly”, or just plain aging…and they are

Estrogen Estrogen (estradiol), on the other hand is also present in men. When you are young, your testosterone levels are high and the estrogen level is low. As men age, the testosterone level begins to fall and the estrogen levels increase. Estrogen, in men, is necessary and even good in low levels. It is known to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and improves some cardiovascular functions. However for the most part, a higher level inactivates testosterone. Higher estrogen levels are also thought to be associated with increases in prostate cancer. This increased estrogen level mimics the same symptoms of lower testosterone, since the estrogen inactivates the testosterone.

A few of the causes for increased estrogen levels in men include consuming street drugs, especially marijuana, consuming alcohol even in moderate amounts, having too many fat cells and consuming grapefruit. Early on when a man is just beginning to not feel his optimal self, the reason can simply be an elevated estrogen level. This creates an out of balance testosterone-to-estrogen ratio. Sometimes this is all that needs to be addressed. Physiologic Demands At times, more than just the estrogen level needs to be corrected as a man ages. Sometimes the signal from the pituitary gland in the brain fails to trigger the correct response in the testicle leading to lower than optimum levels of testosterone. Sometimes, the testicle just simply cannot keep up with the physiologic demands and comes up short. It is estimated that there is a 1-3 % decline in testosterone levels per year beginning in the 30’s for men. For other men, testosterone levels are quite low earlier than expected because of stress and the loss of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis signals (disruptions in the glands of the brain). Whatever the case, testosterone levels are capable of being optimized in several different ways depending on the particular situation.

Testosterone Therapy Often, when a man begins testosterone therapy he feels great, but after a few weeks he may notice that old feeling of fatigue coming back. This is very likely due to the testosterone converting to estrogen, thus inactivating the testosterone he is receiving. There are different ways of blocking the conversion of testosterone into estrogen and this can be accomplished easily most of the time. Substances such as zinc and progesterone can slow this pathway down. Other times it is necessary to use chrysin or anastrozole in very minute doses to accomplish this goal. Your doctor should follow your estrogen level, as well as your testosterone level, to assure you that your ratio is normalized. This can often mean the difference between feeling like testosterone therapy did not work for you and feeling great again. And choosing to have your testosterone levels optimized should also be a discussion. Together, these treatments can bring you back to balance and wellness! Natural Ways to Address Aching Joints & Arthritis By Michael Dworkin, PD, CCN & J. Erika Dworkin People used to believe that osteoporosis and osteoarthritis were the result of aging and reduced intake of calcium and milk products. Science has now shown that these bone and joint disorders are, in part, due to inflammation. ~Life Extension Magazine, June 2014

A

re your joints aching for attention? Would you rather avoid the potential side effects of prescription and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs? You may be able to experience improved symptoms by addressing your arthritis naturally. Definition & Causes The term “arthritis” means “joint inflammation.” In every joint, one bone moves on another. Ligaments, like elastic bands, keep the bones in place and muscles relax or contract to make the joint move. By covering the bone surfaces to stop them from rubbing directly against each other, cartilage allows the joint to work smoothly and painlessly. A capsule surrounds the joint, and synovial fluid fills the space within the joint, known as the joint cavity, to nourish the joint and cartilage. When arthritis strikes, one or a combination of these or other factors can explain the pain attendant to the breakdown of cartilage and synovial fluid: 1. An autoimmune condition [e.g., rheumatoid arthritis (RA)] 2. Free radicals 3. Infections 4. Anatomical misalignment of joints, often from traumatic injury 5. Atherosclerosis in cartilage blood vessels 6. Cartilage calcification (deposit of calcium crystals in joints due to calcium and/or vitamin D deficiency) 7. Joint overuse 8. Long-term use of FDA-approved anti-inflammatory drugs. Whatever the cause of joint discomfort, many factors contribute to the complex course of attendant inflammatory reactions, and the pain associated with it results from the overworking of the body’s normal defense system. The release of the hormone-like prostaglandin PGE2 triggers inflammatory response. Certain cytokines, proteins secreted by immune cells that increase with aging, contribute to it, and the enzymes cyclooxygenase (COX-2) and lipooxygenase (5LOX) sustain it. Side Effects of the Conventional Approach While a wide variety of prescription and OTC drugs address the symptoms caused by inflammation, none actually prevent it and all have potential side effects, including:

1. Corticosteroids (Cortisone, Prednisone): long-term pain, glaucoma, cataracts, candidiasis, hypertension, weight gain, increased risk of infection, and high blood sugar 2. NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, Celebrex): kidney/liver failure, stomach ulcers, edema, prolonged bleeding, and serious cardiovascular risk (Celebrex). Some Key Natural Approaches Herbs and other dietary supplements, some of which are discussed below, combined with an anti-inflammatory/weight control diet, can help ease arthritis symptoms. Not all nutritional supplements are equal, however, and quality and dosages impact results. Boswellia Extract Boswellia extract has shown particular efficacy for knee osteoarthritis (OA) and potential, but less compelling, efficacy for RA. Boswellic acids, including one called AKBA (the most effective COX-2and 5-LOX-inhibiting component), are extracted from the gum resin of the frankincense tree. Boswellia extract also inhibits enzymes that break down cartilage and connective tissues. In one double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled (DBRPC) study, researchers who administered 100mg or 250mg of a 30% AKBA boswellia extract (5-Loxin®, delivering 33 mg or 75 mg AKBA) to seventy-five OA patients found that both doses significantly reduced knee pain and improved physical functioning. In another 30-day DBRPC study of sixty subjects with knee OA, researchers examined the efficacy of 100mg of Aflapin® (patent-pending AprésFlex) and found that, in as early as five days, it significantly improved pain and physical function, and labeled it “a safe, fast-acting and effective alternative intervention in the management of OA.” Curcumin from Turmeric Curcumin is a yellow-orange polyphenol (a micronutrient found in food with antioxidant and potential disease-preventive properties) derived from turmeric, which has been used for more than 3000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. It combats both inflammation and oxidation, twin causes of most illnesses. Due to its poor absorption from the intestines, and rapid metabolism and elimination, it is difficult for ordinary orally-administered curcumin to reach blood levels sufficient to be effective. Multiple curcumin preparations with drug delivery systems have thus been created to enhance its absorption beyond the common turmeric that is standardized to 95% curcuminoids (95%Turmeric), including Theracurmin, Meriva, patented BCM-95, and patented Curcumin C3 Complex® with BioPerine.

Fish & Krill Oils (EPA/DHA) Almost 20,000 studies have proven the numerous benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, and researchers continue to examine whether various sources of these healthy fats impact the body differently. Recent scientific evidence suggests that obtaining omega-3s from both fish and krill oils provides complementary effects on different targets. Fish oil capsules derive from fish varieties rich in omega-3s (e.g. sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and salmon). Krill, a tiny shrimplike crustacean, is a source of omega-3s bound to phospholipids, a significant component of all cell membranes. Those with higher blood levels of omega-3s are less likely to suffer arthritis-related cartilage loss compared to those with lower levels. In one study of 177 patients with moderate-to-severe hip or knee OA, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids (containing EPA and DHA) and 1500 mg of chondroitin sulfate provided greater pain and morning stiffness relief than the chondroitin alone. In one mouse study, krill oil supplements reduced RA scores and greatly diminished joint swelling. In a DBRPC study of 90 patients, researchers determined that, in a treatment period of just 7-14 days, a dose of 300 mg/day of krill oil significantly inhibited inflammation (reduced CRP by 19.3% after 7 days, and by 30.9% after 30 days) and reduced arthritic symptoms. Combined Glucosamine (GS) - Chondroitin Sulfate (CS) - MSM GS, which naturally occurs in the body, builds soft tissue, including cartilage. Although proper dosing is weight dependent, numerous studies have shown 1500 mg/day of GS to be an effective divided dose, and an average of 4-10 weeks to be the timeframe in which one can expect results. According to studies, CS inhibits free radicals that degrade joint cartilage and collagen. By improving blood circulation to joints, CS also enables antioxidants and GS to enter inflamed joints to stimulate the repair process. In a recent 2-year study, researchers proved that, although both Celebrex (200mg) and CS (1200mg) are equally effective inhibitors of knee OA symptoms, only pharmaceuticalgrade CS slows OA progression by reducing loss of cartilage. They encouraged further examination of the impact of CS on other joints.

MSM is a naturally occurring, organic sulfur compound found in food, which then naturally occurs in the body (in the collagen of skin, joints, blood vessels, and the keratin of hair/nails) due to its consumption. Animal and human studies have shown that MSM reduces joint degeneration and pain when ingested or applied topically. (DMSO is a pure, safe source of topical MSM which can provide valuable support to OA patients who are not on blood thinners.) In one DBRCP study of OA patients, researchers concluded that the oral combination of GS and MSM had a stronger and faster analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect (reduced joint pain, swelling, and functionality) than either nutrient alone.

Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) New Zealand Maoris who regularly consumed GLM were found to suffer less arthritis than their inland relatives. This led to the development of a freeze–dried, concentrated powder (Seatone®) and, later, an omega-3 stabilized mussel powder extract (GLME) that was shown to have much greater anti-inflammatory effects than multiple un-stabilized extracts (patented Lyprinol®). The efficacy of New Zealand GLME for treatment of OA and RA symptoms has modest preliminary scientific support, but greater support from consumer testimonials, which include side effects such as stomach upset, gout, and rashes. In one study of 21 subjects diagnosed with knee OA, researchers who administered 3,000 mg/day of GLME found that it significantly improved knee joint pain, stiffness and mobility. Type II Collagen Collagen is the protein building block found in connective tissue (skin, ligaments, tendons, bone, cartilage, blood vessels). Type II collagen, the most abundant in the human body and found in all joints, has been shown to alleviate the pain and swelling in both RA and OA. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) HA, which attracts 1000 times its weight in water, is an abundant carbohydrate in synovial fluid that is chiefly responsible for joint lubrication and shock absorption, but breaks down with age. In articular cartilage (covers the ends of bones), it forms the infrastructure to which the rest of the joint’s structural components attach. Both intra-articular HA injections and oral HA have been clinically proven to be effective.

Vitamin D, Calcium+ When calcium deficiency results in low blood calcium, it causes the parathyroid to pull this mineral from the bones into the blood. Joint calcification results when this calcium subsequently is deposited in the joints. High-dose vitamin D, with the right dose of vitamin K2, calcium and other minerals, can prevent or reverse this process. Based on his clinical trial, Douglas W. Kiburz, M.D., determined that sufficient quantities of HA are important to getting the maximum benefit from GS and CS because HA is required for them to form correctly.

Financial Survival of a Divorce – Part III The 9 Most Costly Mistakes to Avoid By Bill Donaldson n this final article of a three-part series, I address the last three (#7-9) most common financial mistakes made during the divorce process. Increased awareness of these issues helps divorcing individuals avoid mistakes that could be avoided with the right information.

I

Mistake #7: No Post-Divorce Planning One of the most common mistakes is the failure to budget based on one’s new lifestyle. This happens most often when one spouse keeps the home for the sake of the children or an emotional attachment. The expense of maintaining the home and the lack of liquidity often results in a rapid depletion of cash, leaving no choice but to sell the home earlier than expected. This scenario can be avoided if you look at your expenses versus liquid assets and income. This analysis should be completed prior to a settlement. If it is determined that you will be unable to maintain your lifestyle with the proposed offer, you may want to re-negotiate. Mistake #8: Not Maintaining Control over Insurance Policies Most divorce agreements require that the individual paying alimony, child support, college costs etc. obtain a new life policy or maintain a current one with adequate coverage. If you are the beneficiary of this policy, it is critical that you are listed as either the owner or the irrevocable beneficiary. If you are not, the ex-spouse who took out the policy may stop making payments or change the beneficiary. As the owner or irrevocable beneficiary, you would be notified of any issues with the policy, such as non-payment of the premium, and could take action and prevent the policy from lapsing or being cancelled. Mistake #9: Failure to Identify All Assets Do you completely trust your soon-to-be ex-spouse? In many cases, there is often suspicion that money is hiding somewhere. Usually this fear is unfounded, but in order to achieve peace of mind that all assets have been disclosed, there are various places to look for any hidden accounts. Tax returns are one of the best places to start. Most people are uneasy about misleading the IRS for fear of penalties, fines and even prison. Go back at least 5 years to look for any inconsistencies in income, the presence of trusts, partnerships or real estate holdings. Look closely at interest and dividend income. If it disappears in one year, where did the asset producing the income go? If your spouse is a business owner, corporate or partnership returns may show a change in salary, charging personal expenses to the company, or excessive retained earnings. Another common trick is to put a “friend” on the payroll, who agrees to give back the money paid to him after the divorce. A forensic tax professional is of tremendous help in this area.

Checking account statements and cancelled checks for a purchase you never knew about, such as an investment property, can make a substantial difference in total assets to be divided. Savings accounts may reveal unusual deposits or withdrawals in amount or pattern that could point to a hidden asset such as a brokerage account. Brokerage statements are valuable in tracking the purchase and sale of securities. If securities are sold and the proceeds are not accounted for, you can be sure that the assets are out there somewhere. Expense accounts can be abused when corporations give employees a great deal of leeway in their expense account reporting. Cross checking between expense account disbursements and savings/checking account deposits may indicate a pattern of abuse if the deposits exceed legitimate business expenditures. Children’s bank accounts may be opened as a custodial account for the intent of hiding assets as well. In some of these cases, interest is not reported as income on tax returns, and no return is filed for the children. In Summary A Certified Divorce Financial AnalystTM (CDFA) has extensive training in the financial issues of divorce. He or she will analyze the long-term financial impact of a proposed settlement and help you determine if it is feasible. Remember that a proposed settlement might look fair initially, but without proper analysis and forward looking projections, mistakes could be made with dire financial consequences down the road. The bottom line is don’t agree to a settlement until you understand its long-term impact on your financial future! 10 Things Your Pediatrician Might Not Explain To You By Lara O’Neil, APRN have worked in Pediatrics for over 20 years. My education and experience in Western medicine has been invaluable. I know where it excels and where it has its limits. My trainings and experience with holistic and integrative medicine in this later part of my career has provided me with more depth on how to assist in achieving optimal wellness for my patients and families.

I

The following are my opinion of 10 topics that are part of a regular day in a busy Pediatrician’s office. I know this very well, because I once also failed to make these recommendations. Then I started paying closer attention to patient outcomes and pursuing further education. It is important to be your child’s advocate, and to be able to have open discussions with your child’s health care provider. 1. Milk and dairy should not be a large part of your child’s diet. Going back generations it has been recommended that your child start drinking cow’s milk at the age of 12 months. This is encouraged by the Dairy Association’s heavy lobbying and marketing going back to the 1970’s. There is nobody else in the animal kingdom that drinks another’s milk. It is just weird if you think about it! Milk sugar (lactose) and milk protein (casein) are very hard to digest for most people. And there is concern about how pregnant and lactating cows are treated, as well as how milk is processed, and how that affects the nutritional status of the end product. No wonder more and more people are discovering that dairy is contributing to their health problems. There are many healthy alternatives to milk, like almond milk and coconut milk. And contrary to popular belief you can get enough calcium in your diet from healthier sources. 2. Starting your infant with rice cereal at 4 months is not the best option. Parents are often told that rice is “less allergenic” and therefore to start offering this to your baby first. But there really is no need for processed grains for a baby. And you probably want to wait until closer to 6 months of age. It is best to start with a mild vegetable, most palatable are often in the yellow family, like carrots, squash or sweet potatoes. You can advance with other green vegetables or avocado, and then move on to fruits. 3. You do not need to give your infant the Hepatitis B vaccine at birth. The hepatitis B shot is routinely given to infants before being discharged from the hospital at 24-48 hours old. Unless the mother or a close household contact has Hepatitis B, your infant has very minimal risk for contracting the virus. You can complete the 3 dose series when they are older if you choose. If a newborn gets their first vaccine in the hospital, it is not uncommon to get an unnecessary 4th Hepatitis B shot because of combination vaccines routinely given at their well visits in the first 6 months of life. 30

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

4. If your infant is having trouble nursing, you don’t necessarily need to switch to formula feeding. Both moms and infants need to learn how to breastfeed. It can be challenging at times. Lactation counselors are highly trained, excellent advocates and can really make a big difference in the first few weeks. But sometimes that is not enough, and mom’s can often be devastated, exhausted and frustrated. Working with a Chiropractor or Cranial Sacral Therapist who is highly trained to work with infants can make a world of difference. You should also consult with a skilled practitioner about releasing a tongue and/or lip tie that could be interfering with proper breastfeeding. 5. If your infant has reflux, there are other options besides giving them prescription medications like Zantac or Prevacid. Western medicine’s model of care is to treat the symptom instead of addressing the root problem. But medications do not come without side effects; some of them are even dangerous. All infants have reflux to some degree, that is why all babies spit up. It is normal as long as they are gaining weight and they will outgrow it. But if your baby has discomfort or pain, there are alternatives that may address the issue without the side effects of H2 antagonists or proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s) that may interfere with nutrient absorption. Many moms see a huge improvement with removing certain foods from their diet if they are breastfeeding, or switching to a hypoallergenic formula if bottle-fed. Probiotics may be helpful as well. You can also see a chiropractor skilled in infant care. 6. If your older child has stomach pains, there are other options besides PPI’s as well. The same goes for older kids. It is more and more common for Pediatrician’s to be faced with evaluating and treating chronic belly pains. I personally think that this is really something to pay attention to. It is important to look at the whole picture including their nutrition and stress. Even though PPI’s can give them some immediate relief, it does not address the root cause. And in some cases, lowering the stomach acid (which is an important part of digestion) can actually make things worse. There is research showing the dangerous side effects of PPI’s. I have seen dietary changes, nutrient and herbal support make a big difference for kids. 7. There are proactive steps you can take to treat mild and moderate scoliosis. It is common for Pediatricians to take the “wait and watch” approach for scoliosis that is less than a 25 degree Cobb angle. And above that it is bracing (which is minimally effective) and possibly surgery. There is plenty of research and case studies to support that Chiropractic care and home exercises are extremely effective. There are specific yoga and Pilates poses that can be used therapeutically

as well. These treatment options have helped many adolescents avoid the pain, psychological stress and high cost of bracing and surgery. 8. Your child may not need antibiotics every time for an ear infection. Countless times in my practice, I have seen young babies and toddlers get repeated courses of antibiotics. This disrupts their gut flora balance, which can then lead to other problems. And it is not uncommon for these children to end up requiring surgery to place tubes in their ears to address the reoccurring build up of fluid and pus behind their eardrums. Antibiotics are effective and sometimes the best option, but there are alternatives. Dietary changes, chiropractic care, and herbal support have all been shown to be effective and I see it in my practice regularly.

ing stress, witnessing devastating situations, administrative pressures, insurance reimbursement struggles, and having to see a large number of patients day after day. It is easy to get burned out and to lose sight of their original calling. So next time your doc looks uninterested or disapproving, gently remind them that you are in this together. Lara O’Neil APRN is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at ProNatural Physician’s Group, an integrative medical practice in Berlin, CT. She bridges traditional with integrative care from birth through age 21. She is an in network provider for insurance companies and is accepting new patients. Find out more at www.pronaturalphysicians.com or call 860-829-0707. See ad on page 43.

9. For depression and anxiety, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) may not be the best first line of treatment. The statistics on kids being treated with medication for depression and anxiety is staggering. The cause is multifactorial and the treatment should be too. Doctors will usually prescribe counseling along with their prescription drug, which is important, but also is sometimes limited in effectiveness. SSRI’s can have dangerous side effects including worsening of symptoms, and the supportive research on its effectiveness is nebulous. Depending on severity and individual situations, you can use natural supplements and dietary changes in conjunction with medication or alone. There is also a possibility for genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s) that can be therapeutically addressed.

West Hartford/Farmington Valley

10. That they really do care. Pediatricians and doctors really do have a love and compassion for the welfare of children and families. Otherwise they wouldn’t be doing what they are doing. I have worked with many of these colleagues and they are brilliant, caring and dedicated people. Some of my most valuable lessons are from western trained physicians. Allopathic medicine has incredible strengths and it is amazing the advancements we have made and the lives that we can save. Unfortunately, where it often falls short is its reliance on using prescription medication to treat symptoms, and to fail to address the root cause of disease. Health care practitioners are also faced with years of gruel-

Death is the Greatest Illusion of All

I

had the pleasure of sitting down with James Van Praagh last month to talk with him about life, death, mediumship and the state of our world today. James is a pioneer in the field of mediumship and one of the most celebrated and respected spiritual teachers working today. He has brought a mind-full awareness to the subject of “communication with the dead” into the public psyche for the past thirty years. James is known as a “survival evidence medium,” meaning that he provides evidential proof of life after death via detailed messages from the spiritual realms. I’ve also been lucky enough to attend one of his live events and it was absolutely amazing to see him in action. You won’t want to miss his next Connecticut appearance at the Ridgefield Playhouse on October 1st! DH: I think there is a lot of confusion between the terms medium and psychic – can you help clarify that for us? JVP: That is one of the most common questions I am asked! The term “psychic” is often used as a catchall phrase for anyone who works in the paranormal. We know what our five senses are – sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. But we have another sense that is equally as real as the other five. Often referred to as our sixth sense, psychic ability, or our intuition, is the gut feeling or hunch you have that you cannot logically explain. Everyone is psychic to some degree or another, but not everyone is a medium. A medium is a psychic who has fine-tuned his or her extrasensory perception and can interface with the spirits in other dimensions. They are able to feel and/or hear thoughts, voices or mental impressions from the spirit world. A medium is able to become completely receptive to the higher frequency or energies on which spirit people vibrate. Mediumship is much more involved than psychicism because a medium is opening him/herself to a discarnate energy. Mediumship itself can be broken down into two distinct categories. The first and most common type is mental mediumship, which is how I work with my abilities. I communicate with spirits while fully conscious. As the word mental denotes, this form of mediumship utilizes the mind – the intuitive mind, not the rational or logical part. This type of mental mediumship falls into several distinct types which are described as: Clairsentience – (clear feeling) Perceive information by way of strong, emphatic feelings and emotions from spirit. Clairvoyant – (clear vision) See with the mind’s eye objects, colors, symbols, people, spirits or scenes. These pictures are not visible to the naked eye and usually flash into the medium’s mind. Clairaudient – (clear hearing) Perceive sounds or words from sources broadcasting from a spiritual realm. Clairempathy – (clear emotion) Sense or “feel” within one’s self the attitude or emotions of another person. 32

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Clairgustance – (clear tasting”) Discern the essence of a substance through taste from spirit. Clairscent – (clear smelling). Smell a fragrance or odor coming from the spirit. Clairtangency – (clear touching) This ability is commonly known as Psychometry. By holding an object or touching an area you perceive information about the article or its owner or history through the palms of your hands. In my work I most often utilize the abilities of clairsentience and clairvoyance. In order to attune to the thoughts and feelings of spirit, I raise my vibrations higher through meditation and, in turn, spirit has to lower its vibrations somewhat. The second type of mediumship is physical mediumship and it differs from mental mediumship. In physical mediumship the actually physical body is used to get information from spirit. In mental mediumship only the mind of the medium is utilized. Channeling is a well-known form of physical mediumship. A trance medium is another type of physical medium. A trance medium is someone who goes into a trance state to relay messages from the other side. Certain individuals are more prone to mediumship than others. Usually they must develop mediumship skills over a period of time. In my book “Heaven and Earth: Making the Psychic Connection,” I share personal techniques to help you develop your own natural psychic abilities. I also have four incredible mediation programs that are perfect for better understanding and strengthening your intuition. These programs are titled: Divine Love, Meditation Tools, Spirit Speaks and Soul Discoveries. DH: I think that’s a great explanation and helps to differentiate between the two terms. I think people are always surprised to learn that everyone has the ability to be psychic and even develop mediumship talents. When did you first experience this for yourself? JVP: Yes, everyone has these abilities, but many people have closed themselves off to developing them. I try to educate people how to open themselves through meditation and raising their consciousness so the spirit world can communicate with them. Many people are fearful and operating from a very low vibration which makes it impossible for spirit to make a connection. At my live events, my main goal is to make the experience as comfortable and open as possible because the energy of the audience affects the conditions. I add humor and try to make it fun for attendees so they will relax and just allow events to unfold. As a spiritual teacher, my ultimate goal is to have each individual leave my event as a changed person who now looks at the world and relationships from a place of love and not fear.

A man started appearing to me in the corner of my bedroom when I was 3-years-old. I later found out that this was my grandfather who died before I was born. At 6-years-old I had a vision, while in my first grade class, that my teacher’s son was hit by a car. I ran up to her and told her and she smiled and told me to return to my seat. Within 5 minutes, the teacher was called out of the class by the principal who told her that her son was involved in a car accident but that he was going to be ok. I became very upset because I initially thought that I had caused the accident by seeing this vision, but my teacher (who was obviously very conscious and open) said, “No James, you did not cause the accident. You have a gift and you will help many people.” As I got older, in my early twenties, I went to a medium in Manhattan Beach who told me that I would become a medium as well and that the spirit world was going to be reaching out to me and using me in a few years. Sure enough I started seeing and communicating with the deceased two years to the day after I saw that medium. DH: What an amazing story! I’ve always wondered if our soul chooses when we will be born, when we will die and what we come here to accomplish – and who we choose to have relationships with?

JVP: Definitely! However, there is such a thing as free will. This means that even though you have a “soul blueprint” – which is the choices the soul makes before it incarnates – you can make different decisions and choices once you’re here on Earth. I believe that the soul makes choices to continue its learning and evolvement – you come here to have all kinds of experiences. For example, in one lifetime you may choose to be a mother, in the next you may choose not to have children. In another lifetime you may choose to die young and in the next, live a very long life. You want to experience the opposite of the last lifetime so that you continue to grow and evolve. But the ultimate learning is to learn to live a life based on love and not fear. There is so much fear in the world today – fear instilled from our parents, from society, from cultures and people that we don’t understand – fear of the unknown. We will never solve our world’s problems coming from a place of fear and hate. The two biggest illusions are that we are all separate from one another and that we die. The truth is that we are all the same – we are all one. The soul never dies, it just takes on a different form of consciousness. And ultimately, the one thing we are here to do is to love. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Where Water Meets Wine at the Napa River Inn

L

uxury reigns at the Napa River Inn, situated among the bustling renaissance of Downtown Napa’s Riverfront District. Their waterfront location within the Historic Napa Mill grants walkabout access to the neighborhood with specialty shops, gourmet restaurants and world-renowned wines all waiting to be uncorked. In the 1990s the Napa River Inn was erected inside the Historic Napa Mill, with a focus on elements of the past and present. Today, local owner Harry Price, often credited as a key player in the revitalization of Downtown Napa, remains ever-committed to preserving the inherent charms of the Inn’s history, as he continues to evolve and enrich the hotel and its amenities to serve a modern day world.

We stayed in the Plaza Deluxe room, surrounded by riverfront gardens, and overlooking the Napa River. Luxury runs deep in this room with a wonderfully comfortable king-size bed, fireplace, serene river views and private balconies. And one of the best things about the Napa River Inn is that you don’t even have to get out of bed to enjoy your complimentary breakfast – they bring it to you! Sweetie Pies has been wowing visitors and locals for almost 15 years. Do not miss the Morning Bun – an unbelievably decadent warm cinnamon pastry that flakes apart in your hands. So, cozy up under the comforter; sit in your robe by the fireplace; and enjoy some coffee while watching the ducks alight on the Napa River. 34

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

Guests also enjoy easy access to more than 20 tasting rooms. Enjoy the sights on foot, by bicycle or simply slip into their Lexus house car for complimentary “driver hosted” jaunts in town. Relax and rejuvenate at The Spa at the Napa River Inn – they use all natural ingredients in their massage and skincare products from Napa Valley Organics. And the Inn is pet friendly providing customized blankets, gourmet dog bones and biscuits made from Napa Valley wines and you can even have a pet sitter. Now that’s pampering for you and your furry friend! While in Napa, you’ll be astounded by all of the gastronomic delights. My preferred style of eating is tapas or farm to table where you can try numerous small plates with a focus on the freshest, local, in-season ingredients. We dined at the Atlas Social Club (http://www.atlassocialnapa.com), a lively Gastropub serving New American small plates in a rustic space with communal tables & modern flair. We tried the Paprika Marinated Octopus, with Olive Oil Braised Potato, Salsa Verde, and Arugula; the Ahi Tuna Crudo, with Preserved Kumquat, Pine-Nuts, and Fresh Horseradish; and the Jicama & Avocado Salad, with Quinoa, Sunflower Seeds, and Ras el Hanout Vinaigrette. Do NOT miss the Chef’s Crispy Fried Farm Egg, Bacon Jam – similar to a Scotch Egg but even more delicious. The next night we headed up to the Yountville area and dined at the renowned Mustards Grill (www.mustardsgrill.com). It’s a wine country stalwart for upscale Californian-New American fare offered in low-key surrounds. Don’t miss the Three Greens, creamy Maytag Blue cheese and spiced pistachios; the Niman Ranch Barbecued Baby Back Ribs, apple-golden raisin slaw, cheddar-jalapeno corn stix; and the Lemon and Garlic Chicken, local vegetables, lemon vinaigrette. We also fell in love with Zuzu (www.zuzunapa.com), a riverfront spot offering Spanish tapas & an eclectic wine list in relaxed surrounds. We tried the Scallop ceviche with radish, the Salted cod with truffle oil and crostini and the Arroz negro (paella with black rice and clams, mussels, shrimp, squid and fish) – all were amazing.

And of course the real reason anyone is in Napa – the wine tasting! Here is a list of my favorite wineries in Napa. Most are off the beaten path, small boutique style places that only make limited cases of their wine. The tasting rooms are cozy and often not crowded. The reason I love these places is you typically can’t get the wine outside of Napa Valley and you’ll rarely see it on restaurant menus. It’s a real treat to experience these wines and bring some home! Del Dotto Caves Winery & Tasting Room (http://www.deldottovineyards.com) I prefer the Atlas Peak location which has the traditional caves and cozier experience. Amazing and rich cabs, zinfandel, ports. The cave tour is absolutely worth it – you’ll get to taste wines that aren’t on the tasting menu and if it’s a small group you can customize your tasting. Appointment only. Whetstone Wine Cellars (http://www.whetstonewinecellars.com) Conveniently located next to Del Dotto. Lovely chardonnay and pinot noir in a castle-like tasting room. Miner Family Wines (www.minerwines.com) Beautiful Chardonnay, Syrah and blends and fantastic views. Plumpjack (http://www.plumpjackwinery.com) One of my favorite chardonnays, but also fantastic cabs and Syrah in a cozy tasting room. Quintessa (https://www.quintessa.com) The wine is amazing – the tasting fee is $75 but it is worth every dollar. Stunning tasting room.

Finally Wise Up to the Weight Loss Industry

Excerpts from the new e-book, just released by Drs. Frank Aieta and Diane Hayden

I

t’s FINALLY happening! We are realizing that consistent and maintained weight loss comes from making lifestyle changes that incorporate eating healthy, prepared whole foods and being active with moderate exercise and moving our body daily. Gone are the days when we thought we could just exercise off the pint of Ben and Jerry’s or the six slices of pizza we just ate. Gone are the days of eating prepackaged foods from some fad diet in order to lose weight and then gain it all back six months later. We are finally wise-ing up to the weight loss industry!

positive thinking. Researchers are finding that what we think about and the emotions related to these thoughts are critical in whether or not we develop diseases or live a long, healthy life.

Your mind is constantly talking to you and most of the time it doesn’t have good things to say. If you spend a day or even a few hours just listening to the thoughts inside your head as if it were someone else talking to you, you’ll realize that you just might be living with a maniac. One minute your thoughts are saying one thing and the next they’ve either changed the subject or are contradictA 2015 Fortune article by John Kell, states, “Consumers are ing what they just got through saying. “I want to be healthy and fit.” eating more fresh food and exercising more. “That Salted Carmel ice cream cone would taste That’s great news for the country—but not for so good right now.” “I really want to lose weight.” the weight-loss industry. 77% of Americans are “I want the ice cream, I’ll exercise more tomorIf you think you can actively trying to eat healthier, but only 19% say row.” How do we live like this? Because most make a change; they’re on a diet. Making temporary changes in eating habits or eating prepackaged foods from weight loss programs will facilitate weight loss. With all this research and knowledge available to help us However, when you reach your goals or go off the weight loss change our thinking, you’d expect it would be a piece of cake. We program, research shows you may be more likely to return to old have all the information we need to think positive, be happy and live eating habits and gain the weight back (and possibly more). To have the life of our dreams. Yet why is it so elusive? Let’s go back to the permanent weight loss, you must make permanent changes in food weight loss example. As an exercise physiologist, I’ve spent half my choices, eating habits, and physical activity. But how do we do this? life trying to educate people on how to improve their fitness level And is it so much a factor of just making the right choices – or is it and change their bodies. I’ve taught them the right kind of exercise linked to something deeper in our conscious or our subconscious? to do…how often, how long and how intense. I’ve taught them the If it was so easy to just eat healthy and exercise, wouldn’t we all be right way to eat…portion size, macronutrient makeup, caloric conthin and fit? I think sustained weight loss is less related to knowing tent, meals per day, recipes, shopping lists, eating clean, not starving what to do – but more closely tied to knowing WHY we’re doing yourself, eating what you want on occasion…the list goes on and on. it. And that comes down to understanding and controlling your Walk down the weight loss section at your local bookstore, search thoughts and mindset. the terms “weight loss” online, and you’ll find multitudes of books and information all promoting the latest diet craze. The education Some people say we have over 60,000 thoughts per day. In fact, is endless, but the success rate is low. While most people will lose there is substantial research that shows that our negative thoughts weight, the percentage of people that keep that weight off permacan even harm our body. Is it really possible to improve your health nently is slim to none. Sad…but true. I finally realized that making simply by how or what you think, you ask? Intuitively, we’ve all a change in your life has nothing to do with how much knowledge known this to be true, but now research is showing this to be the you have about how to make that change. In the end, there is only case through studies in the fields of psychoneuroimmunology and one thing that matters. 36

Natural Nutmeg - September 2016

If you think you can make a change; that is the only way you’ll make it. It starts with a thought. If our thoughts are typically working against us, how do we break that pattern? Can we simply just wake up one day and start having positive thoughts all day? For most, it’s probably not that easy. At least for me, it wasn’t. My journey began by reading as many books as I could get my hands on relating to positive thinking, manifestation, neurophysiology and spirituality. A few that I would insist on reading are: Eckhert Tolle, “Power of Now”; Michael Singer, “The Untethered Soul”; and Lynn Grabhorn, “Wake Up Your Life is Waiting.” What these books taught me was that before you can change you must recognize the power of your thoughts and emotions. You must understand how the mind works in creating positive and negative thoughts. The idea hit me that there must be some step that comes before a thought which is where the change must occur in order to shift your thinking. Think of this scenario…you awake after a peaceful night’s sleep and you feel calm, happy and at peace. You feel this way until you have your first thought. So, what is the space that has allowed the peaceful feelings before your thoughts created the negative feelings? If any of you have meditated, you know that you are able to create this quiet, tranquil state. You know that there is another part of you beyond your thoughts and emotions. I believe tapping into this source is the key to changing your thoughts. I sat down with Mary Gello, a participant in our Weight Loss Puzzle Solved 8-week program which is an adjunct to our ebook, “The Weight Loss Puzzle, Finally Solved,” to discuss how changing her thoughts and mindset was the key for her to finally solving her weight loss struggles. Mary: The most important thing this 8-week program has done for me is that it really changed my mindset. I was always questioning what diet I should try, how much exercise I should do and after failing at so many attempts, I finally put a stake in the ground and realized it’s a lifestyle change. I was always doing some fad diet for 6 months and then going back to old habits and gaining the weight back. I finally realized…I wasn’t going to find some miraculous diet or exercise program. For me it’s all about the mind.

DH: How would you describe the program to others? Mary: It’s a lifestyle and a process. The diet (I don’t even like to call it that, because it’s really just a healthy eating plan) is really doable, nothing that’s fad or temporary. For exercise, I’ve always been a “do more” person. Even though I intuitively knew that didn’t work, I learned from you that sometimes we need to step back and not exercise so much. Your body responds so much better this way than exercising 7 days a week. But probably the most important aspect is the education about changing your whole mindset. Most programs don’t deal with that at all – how important it is, what’s going on in our heads that’s stopping us from reaching our goal. DH: What was the best thing that happened to you as a result of doing this program…besides losing the weight!? Mary: I feel like I already knew what I needed to do to lose weight… but more importantly, doing this program helped me find the confidence to DO IT! Understanding the role my mindset plays and the strategies I’ve learned in dealing with negative self-talk helps me realize I’m not a failure if I make a few mistakes - I know what I have to do, and how to tweak things if I need to make adjustments in my eating or exercise. I don’t feel like I fail anymore because I know this is a process. It’s made me more confident to know that I can maintain this for my whole life. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. This is just a sample of what this book has in store for its readers. There are also chapters on weight loss and the proper lab tests to ask for before implementing a diet plan and how to interpret the results. The reader will also be guided towards which diet is truly the best for them as well as choosing the ideal dietary supplements and exercise plan. There is also an entire chapter dedicated to providing the reader with healthy recipes and meal options. The true premise of this book is for the reader to finally take their health back into their own hands by arming them with the complete knowledge to do so. Please go to www.weightlosspuzzlesolved.com for more information and updates. See ad on page 5.

DH: What was it about this program that you knew was going to be different from any other program you’ve tried? Mary: The group support was a tremendous help; unlike anything I’ve seen in other programs. To know that you’re not alone, that you’re struggling with the same issues as others and hearing their stories, struggles and victories pushes you forward. It makes me feel good and gives me accountability to help and support others and knowing you’re a part of a group effort rather than doing it by yourself. To know someone’s in your corner if you have a question – I’ve loved the access to you and Aimee and Dr. Frank and the ability to go on the Facebook page and get an answer immediately. All my friends (and myself) who have done packaged food programs, have all gained the weight back. Also, it was very discouraging to be judged by how much weight you lost each week. In other programs, if you gain one pound in a week it’s looked at as a failure. In this program, we learned that sometimes we plateau and don’t lose weight for a few weeks, and sometimes we may even gain a few pounds, but that shouldn’t be seen as failing. Sometimes it’s our body just adjusting to the new weight loss and we just need to keep doing what we’re doing. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Words of Wisdom for Teens

T

his month Bernie answers 2 common questions that he receives regarding the emotional health of teens:

1. What can teenagers do today to help ensure a healthy future emotionally, physically and spiritually?

Studies reveal that when a child grows up feeling loved by their parents we do not have to worry about their future emotionally, physically or spiritually. The opposite of love is indifference and if one seeks attention through self destructive behavior the end result is obvious. What teenagers can do is abandon their past and all the negativity associated with it and use their anger and energy to change their lives and reparent themselves. “When you let love into your prison it changes all the negative items in it (meaning the experiences in your life) and turns them into something meaningful.” Those are the words of a woman who was abused as a child. Teens can also look for chosen parents who will accept and love them even when their behavior is not liked. These are people who love you no matter what, even when they are critical of your behavior as do most parents and many teachers and religions. So find someone to coach you through life who has had a major loss or illness because they will know what lessons are important for survival. The most important thing for teenagers to realize is that suicide is not ever the treatment of choice. A young man I know, Tony Johnson who wrote “A Rock and A Hard Place”, was planning to commit suicide. Tony was HIV+ due to sexual abuse by his parents and others. I told him we could get a gun and kill his parents instead. He said, “No I never want to be like them”. You were never meant to eliminate yourself. You were meant to love yourself and your neighbors. What you need to eliminate is that which is killing you physically, emotionally and spiritually. You must not give up the life you want for yourself in order to please others. When you do, you lose your life. You must be willing to lose the untrue self and save your authentic life. You are a divine child so get your baby pictures out and live for that awesome child. And like children and animals, when you need attention and love make noise, move and express your feelings.

2. In your opinion, what defines success and how can teens work to achieve success?

I have seen many children of millionaires suffering because their parents gave them money, which they were to use in an effort to make more money and be successful. One young man said to me, “My father ruined my life when I was 21. He gave me a million dollars and told me I had to be a success.” What would his father have said if he started a charity with the money? Most parents give their children mottoes to die by and not live by. What is your definition of success. If it is a big estate and lots of money you will never be happy or successful. When speaking to a group of young business owners, all of whom were millionaires I asked, “Is life fair?’ They yelled no louder than any group I have ever spoken to. A young man in therapy for the grief that trying to be a success was causing him said, “When you are a success you are not happy, but when you are happy you are a success”. Decide how you want to serve the world and then go do it. You will be living your life and accomplishing what we are all here to accomplish in our lifetime. And when you enjoy serving in your way, Monday morning will not be a threat to your health and you will never feel like you are working. Because it is only work if there is someplace else you’d rather be. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month 6:30 to 8:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo.com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net. You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct.
