With my background as a Reiki Master, Shamanic Practitioner, and Sound Healer, I recognize and align areas that may be causing blocks. I am an intuitive who connects with soul babies to receive and share messages and signs. I work from an energetic and soul perspective. My goal is to help women shift from struggling to conceive to an “empowered conception.”

What is the best memory you have about being a holistic nutritionist? I have so many wonderful memories of the hugs and thank yous I have received from my patients and the parents for being a part of their lives and the difference I have made, for listening, being nonjudgmental, supportive, and compassionate.

Why are you passionate about your specialty?

The conception journey is a complex and personal one and can be a struggle for many women. For far too long, the focus for a solution has been on the medical aspects. I, on the other hand, offer my cli ents a non-invasive approach to “unexplained infertility.”

My personal journey took me from a successful corporate career down a path of a frightening health diagnosis (multiple sclerosis) that forced me to change my entire life. The bright side of this shocking news opened my world up to remember my connection with the universe. When I conceived my own two baby boys, my intuitive ability to connect with soul babies and spiritual guides was re-ignited. My own healing journey helped me realize that I needed to support others who are scared, sick, stuck, or have forgotten their own power. Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner. My favorite moment as a practitioner is when my clients call me to tell me they are pregnant, adopting, having their soul baby via surrogate, or have made peace with their journey in general. The most recent “best memory” is when a client who’d had eight miscarriages chose to work with me as a last resort, which resulted in bringing in their destined baby. Bringing light babies into the world is my purpose. CT• 203.517.7674

Qigong Qigong is an ancient form of exercise encompassing slow movement, massage of acupuncture pathways, and breathing exercises. We have energy pathways throughout our whole body, including on our scalp. By stimulating the pathways that connect to the brain, we can remove energetic blockages and increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain. The following are a few brain-stimulating exercises to do on your own. These exercises are excellent for memory, cognition, and preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as to treat post-stroke symptoms.

4. Bring the arms up over head, tap your fingers at the crown of your head, then slowly bring your hands down in front of your face a few inches away, visualizing all the stress leaving your brain and body and sending it to the earth.

Herbs and Supplements for Brain Health

“Getting regular, quality sleep and eating a healthy diet are the most important things we can do on a daily basis to keep our memory and brain function at optimal levels.”

1. Comb through your hair from front to back with your fingertips to stimulate the scalp and cranial acupuncture points.

—Donna Bunte, MSOM, LAc

2. Bacopa Bacopa monnieri is an herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It helps with memory and brain function and works by increasing the connections between neurons.

7. Deep breathing from the chest to the lower abdomen stimulates the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the heart, stomach, colon, and other organs. This can help calm the brain in times of excess stress and over-production of cortisol.

3. Place both thumbs at the back of your head, feeling for tight and tender spots. Press and massage these points along the ligaments next to the cervical spine. Keeping these points as well as muscles and ligaments open increases blood flow and thus oxygen to the brain.

By Donna Bunte, MSOM, LAc

Optimizeto the Brain and Enhance Memory Health

As we age, brain health and memory become a major concern for many of us. The good news is, there are many things we can do to help keep our brain vital. Practicing certain exercises, using herbs and supplements, getting quality sleep, and eating a healthy diet are some of the most important things we can do to enhance the memory and optimize the brain.

5. Pinch and squeeze your earlobes. The ears are a microcosm of the whole body, especially the brain. The acupuncture/acupressure points on the earlobes are used for trauma, stress, and addiction and are used in hospitals and trauma centers around the country.

10 NATURAL Nutmeg OCTOBER/SEPTEMBER 2022

6. Rotate your body to the left and right, tapping your sides as you swing your arms. By opening up the spine, we are unblocking the energy and sending blood flow up and down the spine and to the brain.

Tools

2. Tap with all ten fingers on the front of the forehead to simulate the frontal lobe.

1. Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo biloba is one of the best brain herbal supplements available. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of years. Gingko has been shown to lower the stress hormone cortisol which helps create a relaxed and focused state of mind.

3. Panax Ginseng and Rhodiola Rosea Panax ginseng and Rhodiola rosea are adaptogenic herbs that are often found together in herbal formulas. They have both been shown to relieve stress, increase energy, reduce brain fog, improve sleep, and bring a calming effect to the mind.

This powerful mushroom, Hericium erinaceus , may protect against dementia, reduce mild symptoms of anxiety and depression, and help repair nerve damage. In studies, lion’s mane mushrooms have also been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-boosting qualities among other beneficial properties. Acupuncture Acupuncture is an effective treatment for optimiz ing brain function. It is used to keep the energetic, neurological, and vascular pathways to the brain open, as well as helping to regenerate brain function in cases of dementia and for post-stroke sequelea.

Other Ways to Take Care of Your Mind

See ad on page 31 > SacredRiversYogaCenter

4. Omega-3 Fish Oil with EPA/DHA These ingredients in fish oil have been shown to improve brain function. EPA is known for improv ing mood and reducing inflammation, while DHA is the fatty acid that helps improve brain development and cognitive function.

5. Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Our brains function best when we are calm and focused, which allows us to access our memory functions and cognition optimally.

Getting regular, quality sleep and eating a healthy diet are the most important things we can do on a daily basis to keep our memory and brain function at optimal levels. Getting enough regular sleep allows our brain and body to restore and heal overnight. And feeding our body with the cleanest, healthiest food possible is vital, since food is our energy and turns into our very cells. Avoiding processed foods, sugar, additives, preservatives, excess alcohol, chemicals, and pesticides is key to allowing our body to function optimally. The more we include a variety of organic vegetables in a balanced diet of healthy fish, legumes, and healthy fats and protein, the healthier our body and brain will be, so we can live to a vibrant old age.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), advanced medical research, health care im provements, and our medical communities’ support for physical activity all play a dominant role in the increasing significance of healthy aging. But there is also a cross-generational effort to make our golden years count by initiating healthy habits sooner rather than later. According to Mintel research, more than 55% of Americans reported living a healthier lifestyle in 2017 in comparison to 2016, and 45% stated that they made “dramatic changes to improve their health.” Keep on Moving It is so important to keep our bodies moving every day. Physical activity not only strengthens our mus cles and our joints, but also improves our mood. In our 30s, we begin to lose muscle mass and function. Decades of sitting at a desk on a regular basis can re sult in tight pectoral muscles and weak back muscles, causing a muscle imbalance. Therapeutic massage can enhance muscular health, improve posture holding patterns, and keep us actively headed toward healthy aging.

Geriatric patients frequently complain of joint stiffness and arthritis. The resulting pain can severe ly limit a senior’s mobility. Not being able to move easily and enjoy everyday activities can increase feelings of helplessness, aggravation, and depres sion in older patients. As a result, they have poor circulation and limited physical capability. Receiving regular massages soothes joint stiffness, lowers blood pressure, alleviates arthritis pain, increas es range of motion in joints, improves posture, improves muscle tone and strength, and even helps with balance. Even gentle massage has a proven effect on blood circulation and the nervous system.

By Kristina E. Mozzicato, LMT, BCTMB

Recent scientific research on aging and disease has included geriatric massage as a way to benefit the aging population. This type of massage uses gen tle massage techniques and light stretching without excessive friction on the skin. It is non-invasive and gentle. For seniors, mature skin contains less mois ture and is more susceptible to bruising and tearing with standard massage. Geriatric massage instead uses soothing, gentle strokes and mild stretching, and sessions are usually shorter, lasting about 30 minutes. Research has shown that older people liv ing with chronic conditions, such as Parkinson’s dis ease, arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease, respond positively to a weekly 30-minute massage. Also, massage has therapeutic benefits in the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients because it promotes relaxation and facilitates communication.

“Research has shown that older people living with chronic conditions, such as diabetes,disease,Parkinson’sarthritis,andheartdisease,respondpositivelytoaweekly30-minutemassage.”

12 NATURAL Nutmeg OCTOBER/SEPTEMBER 2022

—Kristina E.LMT,Mozzicato,BCTMB Americans are living longer, healthier, and more active lives than ever before. Specif ically, the 65 and older population reached just under 50 million, and it is projected to increase to around 98 million by 2060. Whether you regularly work out at the gym or lead a more sedentary lifestyle, massage therapy should be a regular part of your self-care. Massage therapy can be beneficial at any age, and in particular is very beneficial for the geriatric population.

Massage Improves Quality of Life as You Age Health

Research on massage therapy for pain, conducted by the Samueli Institute in 2016 and commissioned by the Massage Therapy Foundation (with support from the American Massage Therapy Association), concluded that massage therapy is a viable rec ommendation for pain management. Therapeutic massage also stimulates lymphatic flow, thereby strengthening the immune system. Massage Therapy for the Mind In addition to physical ailments, advanced age can lead to mental ailments. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness are all common mental health problems in the elderly. Geriatric massage can be a comforting and relaxing experience, while helping with stress relief and better quality of sleep. Human touch is very important and powerful—especially in our later years. Massage therapy is a great way to experience the therapeutic benefits of touch and to help combat those other negative emotions. Touch reduces blood pressure, creates bonds with others, reduces anxiety, and generally makes people feel happier. Sadly, many seniors find that they have fewer opportunities to engage in touch as they age. Massage is a wonder ful way to fulfill our need for touch. Seniors report feeling less depressed and having a more positive outlook on life following a massage. Not only does massage ease muscle and joint pain, it also reduces stress, which often increases in old age. Geriatric massage can help to maintain and improve overall health, as well as regain certain physical functions that have been reduced or lost due to aging. Age is just a number. An elderly person can be fit, active, and independent; they can be sedentary, in pain, with limited mobility, or they may be some where in between. Massage therapy has been shown to improve the quality of life—both physically and mentally—for all types of people. Kristina Mozzicato is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork by the NCBTMB. A 2009 graduate of the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy, she is also certified in Cupping and ACE MediCupping™. Kristina is the owner of Abundant Health Massage Therapy & Wellness in Farmington, CT and was named a 2020 and 2021 Natural Nutmeg Magazine 10 Best Award recipient in the category of Massage and Bodywork. What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection? Your blood is comprised of red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. The plasma in your blood is extremely efficient at carrying nutrients, hormones, and other regenerative factors all throughout the body, while at the same time removing waste. It is an essential part of the body’s regenerative process that often gets overlooked. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a procedure in which a sample of your blood is taken and the plasma is isolated by centrifugation (using inertia to separate the blood into its individual components). This process enables the plasma to concentrate and become saturated with regenerative platelets. Once it has been isolated, PRP can be injected directly into injury sites using precision image-guidance systems. Once the plasma has been injected, the concentrated platelets can begin supplementing cellular regeneration. Platelets are naturally saturated with compounds known as growth factors. Essentially, they contain many of the necessary components needed to repair or replace damaged tissues in the body. Your body already utilizes this regenerative method, just on a slower, less effective scale. The simplest way to describe PRP therapy is a reallocation of your body’s natural resources. We are extracting platelet-rich plasma from your blood, where the resources are plentiful, and they are injected into an injury site, where they are scarce and desperately needed. PRP is utilizing your natural healing process and making it as efficient as possible. Using PRP for Common Injuries At the Center of Excellence in Pain and Regenerative Medicine, we treat damaged ligaments and tendons in the body from head to toe. Joint injuries are notorious for acute pain and chronic injury as they are subjected to high levels of strain

By Dr. Roshni N. Patel, MD

Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) is a minimally invasive injection procedure that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to repair damaged ligaments and tendons using organic substances such as blood plasma. RIT includes prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy, and other injections that help regenerate tissues. RIT is not a new technique. The concept of irritating tissue to promote healing dates as far back as the ancient Greeks. Hippocrates treated Olympic javelin throwers with unstable shoulders by touching what he described as a “slender hot iron” to the ligaments holding the shoulder joint together. The heat would irritate the ligament capsule, causing it to tighten up. (Interestingly, modern-day orthopedic surgeons use heat probes and lasers to do the same thing Prolotherapysurgically!)wasused in France to treat hernias before modern surgical techniques became available. The techniques we use today were developed in the 1930s by G.S. Hackett, MD, a surgeon from Ohio, along with other MDs and DOs. Hackett coined the term “prolotherapy” because his initial work demonstrated that the new tissue laid down during the healing process was new healthy tissue, not scar tissue.

Regenerative medicine is the wave of the future. It is the process of replacing or “regenerating” human cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function. This field holds the promise of regenerating damaged tissues, ligaments, and tendons by stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms to heal. Current estimates indicate that approximately one in three Americans could potentially benefit from regenerative medicine. What Is Regenerative Injection Therapy?

Every day, more than 300 million people menstruate in the U.S., and every month, more than 1.8 billion people menstruate worldwide. The average female will menstruate once a month for roughly 35 to 40 years. That’s approximately 3,000 days—equating to more than 8 years’ worth—of periods during a lifetime. The population that menstruates can experience many unwanted symptoms each month, which can interfere with basic daily living and functioning.

Is Painful Menstrual Bleeding Disrupting Your Daily Life?

Dysmenorrhea, better known as painful menstrual bleeding, affects more than fifty percent of cycling females in their lifetime, with some estimates suggesting up to 84%. Days of missed school or work due to painful menstruation affects between 32–40% of cycling females. Decreased productivity for those going to work while experiencing pain is as much as 33%, resulting in a mean of 8.9 days of total lost productivity per year. The largest study of productivity and menstrual complaints that has been performed demonstrated that the stigma of missing work/school due to menstrual complaints led up to 79.9% of absent females to not disclose the true reason for missing school or work. Such common complaints in such a large population should be discussed openly and without shame. There are two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary.

PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEA SECONDARY DYSMENORRHEA

Complaints change in time of pain onset during menstrual cycle or in intensity of pain

Common causes: Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical stenosis, use of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD)

It is truly unfortunate, and even demeaning to women, that American culture defines menopause as a time of loss—loss of fertility, youthful skin, emotional stability, hair, bone density, physical comfort, libido, and more. What if relabeling menopause as an exciting rite of passage could spark a change in our culture and in this predominantly negative experience for many women in our country? Modifying your beliefs around this major life change, truly embracing the experience, can be the precursor to additional significant positive life changes. These shifts in your consciousness can make the path to an empowered menopause easier to implement and will enable you to create your future as you wish it to be. What IS Menopause, Exactly?

Midlife toMappingMenopause:andYourPathEmpowerment

Perimenopause, also known as the menopausal transition, consists of the years leading up to menopause when you begin to experience changes in your monthly cycle. During that four-to-seven-year period, possibly even as many as twelve years, you might experience a mix of the symptoms listed below.

• occasional incontinence (especially when sneezing or laughing, yikes!)

Exciting news! The five essential steps below will make a real difference in the frequency and degree with which you experience menopausal symptoms and can empower you to celebrate them as portents to an exciting rebirth. You will transform into a Menopause Goddess as you reshape your consciousness, balance your hormones, achieve emotional equilibrium, and meet your future self.

Menopause is the point in time twelve months after you have your last period when your ovaries stop releasing fertile eggs due to their reduced production of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen levels drop 40–60% (the ovaries, adrenal glands, and body fat continue to make it), but progesterone levels can drop to near zero in some women, causing estrogen dominance. In most women, menopause occurs around age 51, but it can set in as early as age 40.

pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands begin to produce lower amounts of hormones, which in turn negatively affects the nervous system. Genetics, age, diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors impact the time of onset. Surgical removal of the ovaries, or uterus and cervix (hysterectomy), chemotherapy, and drugs designed to shut down ovarian estrogen production, can induce menopause.

Postmenopause begins after the 12-month point of menopause. In most women symptoms tend to subside, but they become more vulnerable to heart and bone diseases, diabetes, obesity, cognitive decline, depression, and cancer.

• breast tenderness and increased belly fat

• fatigue/sleep deprivation

The physical aspects of peri/menopause can be very challenging, but not all women experience the transition to the Age of Wisdom the same. Some of your friends may have very few symptoms, while you and others might feel like you’re falling apart. You may experience more than you can handle as your fat cells change, your body begins to use energy differently, and your shape and physical functions take on burdensome, unrecognizable characteristics. You might suffer:

• extreme or unpredictable irritability or depression

The Physical Effects of Menopause

Step 4: Add Supportive, High-Quality Supplements Many high-quality dietary supplements can fill in the gaps where diet modification and lifestyle changes fail to fully address the challenging midlife change. In the right doses and combinations, these include:

Step 2: Learn to Cope Better with Other Life Stressors

Step 1: Adopt a New Positive Viewpoint

Step 3: Change Your Diet and Make Other Lifestyle Changes

21 NATURAL Nutmeg2022 OCTOBER/SEPTEMBER

It is well-established that actual and perceived negative stressors exacerbate the impact of menopausal symptoms. When your body, in response to stress, favors producing extra adrenaline and cortisol over estrogen and progesterone, that process can cause very difficult physiological, emotional, and psychological challenges. How you cope with life’s many twists and turns can greatly determine how your body will react. Some self-help stress management tools include daily stretching, yoga, journaling, exercising, tai chi, deep breathing, meditation, and prayer.

What you believe and focus on daily will create your reality. Finding the positivity in what your future life may hold can positively impact your health and make all the difference in what you will experience in your life in general. As difficult as it may sound, it is critical to resolve that the wonderment of your life’s next phase will define you, rather than any past losses or difficulties. As a Source being, you have the power to change your beliefs, decide not to play victim to your physical and other challenges, be patient with your body and yourself, and label yourself growing rather than aging. Ask yourself, “Who do I want to become?” and “What do I want my life to be?” Then, begin to move toward that vision of your future self. Every step toward self-realization matters.

Since you have a sinus infection, mucosal flow is significant. This will flush the antimicrobial from the area in less than 10 minutes. If it’s not there, it’s not working. It is paramount to the success of this therapy that you spray every 20 to 30 minutes. Using the Neti pot in the morning and evening for 10 minutes is also advised. Bacteria and fungi can double in number every 20 minutes. Once you have cleared the infection, regular spraying and Neti potting can be done to keep an infection from returning. For this prophylactic protocol, you should continue to use the Neti pot once a week and the sinus spray a few times per day. •

What’s a Sinus Sufferer to Do?

Glad you asked. The problem is two-fold. First, you are fighting what is a symbiotic relationship of fungus and bacteria with an active agent that kills only the bacteria. Second, the active agent you are using to kill the bacteria kills only some of the bacteria. Those that are not susceptible to your chosen antibiotic will take over the feeding grounds of the ones you have killed, leaving you with a fauna of germs that you cannot kill. Your sinuses are host to many fungi. They thrive on the muco-polysaccharides (mucus) that line your sinus passage and produce exotoxins that irritate the sinus membranes. The fungi act as a platform of insulation upon which the bacteria live and thrive. The bacteria can digest the conversion of the mucus by the fungi and live on top of them. In this manner, they are insulated from your immune system and isolated from the drugs you would take. You need

sinus-respiratory-care/. See ad on page 42 >

Natural Remedies to the Rescue

It is also important to choose an antimicrobial that kills all the bacteria. Each type of antibiotic kills only a portion of the fauna, leaving the survivors to take over the sinus tissue that the depleted bacteria have abandoned. You want a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that kills all types of bacteria as evenly as possible, so you don’t just kill the weaker ones.

If you suffer from chronic sinusitis and have been through multiple courses of antibiotics, you know the ills of this approach. Antibiotics may leave you with intestinal problems and yeast infections while only getting rid of the sinus infection for six months or so. The next time it comes back, you have to try a different antibiotic, this one likely costing you more and making you feel worse. Why is this cycle escalating? Why aren’t you winning the war even though you’re frequently winning the battles? Because the antibiotic solution does more harm than good, shifting the fauna and flora of bacteria in your sinuses to those not so easily killed by the antibiotics, leaving you with a more formidable foe after each round. Additionally, the antibiotics are taken systemically, meaning they are coursing through your entire body when you only need them in your sinuses. This distorts all the fauna all over your body and can lead to a yeast infection.

Clinical studies have shown that an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver of 35 parts per million or more can terminate sinus infections in a week or less. What’s more, it can be sprayed directly into the sinuses, so it doesn’t have to be taken systemically. You apply it only where the infection is occurring—in your sinuses. To reach the deeper sinuses, it is best to use a Neti pot. You can fill your sinuses with the solution and then close off your nose with your fingers. Sitting this way for 10 or more minutes will kill more bacteria and fungi than a week’s worth of antibiotics.

Natural cancer treatments are available, but they do require a committed approach to healthy lifestyle changes. Also, be sure to collaborate with a team of physicians that can help you navigate treatment options, therapies, and protocols that are best for your situation. The following natural approaches have been shown to relieve cancer symptoms and limit the spread of tumor cells.

• A ketogenic diet that is rich in healthy fats, low in carbohydrates, and eliminates excess refined sugar and processed carbohydrates may be effective in reducing or fighting cancer. According to several studies, a ketogenic diet increases the metabolic efficiency—since cancer cells feed on glucose and cannot feed on ketones, the tumor is essentially being starved by this diet.

Use Food as Medicine • Blueberries increase the levels of natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells are a vital part of the immune system whose job it is to hunt out “foreign invaders,” including potential tumor cells and pathogens such as viruses and harmful bacteria. In a healthy body, NK cells destroy abnormal cells before they become cancer cells. Additionally, blueberries can slow or stop the growth of breast cancer stem cells, “Be sure to collaborate with a team of physicians that can help you navigate treatment options, therapies, and protocols that are best for situation.”your —April Beaman, RDH, CTT

Natural treatments are becoming increasingly popular due to the rise in cancer, coupled with the failure of our current medical system to find successful, lasting cancer therapies. As such, you can find clinics around the world that utilize a wide array of natural and alternative therapies to help individuals with all forms of cancer.

Cancer may arise from numerous physical ailments, including a weakened immune system, the accumulation of toxic carcinogens, excessive acidity, and the lack of oxygen to cells. Many of these ailments can be treated, and so can cancer.

Dr. Max Gerson, a German-born American physician, developed one of the most effective natural cancer treatments over 90 years ago simply by recommending organic plant-based foods, raw juices, coffee enemas, and natural supplements. The Gerson Diet consists of eating only organic fruits, vegetables, and sprouted ancient grains. The diet is rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and exceptionally low in fats, proteins, and sodium. In the words of the Gerson Institute: “With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy naturally reactivates the body’s magnificent ability to heal itself, with no damaging side effects.” This powerful natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases. The Budwig Protocol Dr. Johanna Budwig was an expert on pharmacology and lipids and has been considered one of the leading authorities on fats and oils. During her research, Budwig discovered that several conventional processed fats and hydrogenated oils were responsible for destroying the membranes of the body’s cells, causing diseased cells and toxicity. She developed a specific diet known as the Budwig Protocol, which helped to counteract this cancer-causingTheprocess.protocol attracts oxygen into the cells and in this oxygenated environment, cancer cells are killed off. The Budwig Protocol works by replacing deadly processed fats and oils with life-giving unsaturated/saturated fatty acids to rejuvenated and rebuild cells. Budwig advised her patients suffering from cancer to consume a quark (a mixture of cottage cheese and flaxseed oil) up to eight times daily for up to six months. Budwig claimed to have had over a 90% success rate with her protocol over a 50-year period. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) HBOT utilizes a pod-like chamber to submerge an individual in an environment of 100% pure oxygen with an atmospheric pressure up to three times the normal amount. Breathing pure oxygen under this amount of pressure can increase the amount of oxygen in the blood stream. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help to remove two of the major physical problems that contribute to cancer: lack of oxygen to cells and excessive acidity. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment reduces cellular hypoxia—the deprivation of oxygen to cells—thereby decreasing acidic conditions. Unlike cancer cells, healthy cells cannot flourish without an adequate oxygen supply.

Cryoablation Cryoablation is a way of destroying cancer cells via deep-freeze. The procedure begins with the use of ultrasound imaging to identify the exact location of the tumor. Next, a thin instrument called a cryoprobe is inserted directly into the tumor, releasing liquid nitrogen gas, which can be as cold as –75°C, to freeze the tumor. The process is repeated several times until enough blood flow is interrupted to cause apoptosis.

For an even more powerful natural cancer approach, couple the hyperbaric oxygen therapy with the ketogenic diet. Results involve a decreased rate of tumor growth, improved state of ketosis, and a lower blood glucose concentration.

Breast Screenings These screenings should be scheduled routinely for optimal breast and overall health. Breast thermography uses infrared, thermal imaging to assess and monitor breast health naturally and safely without the use of X-rays and radiation. This breast screening is a valuable tool to assess and monitor breast health before, during, and after breast cancer treatments. It’s a Team Effort Natural cancer therapies can be a vital part of one’s health journey. As always, be sure to include your entire health team in your decisions as you prepare to confront those four little words. Healthy eating, regular screenings, and educated creativity can go a long way in your journey to good health.

By Dr. Adam Breiner, ND Many people are worried that they might be losing their memory, or losing the ability to form new memories. Of course, neurogenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, are foremost on their minds. However, memory lapses can occur for various reasons and can be improved, regardless of a person’s age.

“Some hospitals use hyperbaric oxygen therapy to aid in the healing of burn victims and people

Sleep Sleep is one of the first things that must be looked at if you feel your memory is worsening or if you want to improve your memory. Have you ever tried to get through a busy day when you have had very little sleep? Lack of sleep will impair your focus and diminish your ability to retain information.

Efficient sleep with the correct number of sleep cycles (cycling through Theta and Delta sleep) is essential for forming long-term memories. Imagine if the efficiency of one’s sleep is off every night of the week—this lack of efficient sleep will have a significant impact on one’s brain health.

CNS Vital Signs measures overall cognitive performance and details various aspects of memory, psychomotor speed, attention, and social understanding. CNS Vital Signs is a world leader in designing and developing neurocognitive and behavioral software used by the U.S. military veterans’ hospitals. It is also utilized worldwide by universities and the pharmaceutical industry to assess neurocognitive function. In our office or at home, a CNS Vital Signs computerized test takes approximately 30–45 minutes (depending on the number of areas tested). It can determine a patient’s cognitive abilities with a high degree of accuracy. The testing results indicate in which areas a person is performing above average, average, low, or very low compared to the normative database. EEG EEG is an acronym for electroencephalogram and is the measurement of the brain’s electrical activity. It is a functional assessment of how the brain’s neuronal networks communicate. An EEG traditionally measures the outer surface of the brain’s activity. Still, with newer advances such as sLORETA (Standardized Low Resolution Electromagnetic

By assessing one’s brain waves via an EEG, we can help with the areas of the brain that might not be performing optimally. For instance, if the temporal lobes are deficient in the Theta frequency band (4–7 Hz), this may be a reason for memory impairment. Another reason one’s brain may feel like it is slowing down is that the overall speed and efficiency of the brain are slowing down. We assess this with an EEG baseline and Evoked Response Potentials (ERP). An Evoked Response Potential test evaluates the brain while performing a task to understand how fast the brain responds and which areas of the brain activate during the task. The ERP test assesses cognitive decline and functional deficiencies associated with the aging brain and other neurologic disorders. For example, if GO appears on the computer screen, the patient must click on the screen with their mouse as quickly as possible to measure their reaction speed. An EEG is recorded during the test to see how the brain responds to stimuli. The average response should be at least 600 milliseconds or better. Depending on the results, we may use techniques such as neurostimulation with transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation, along with neurofeedback, to improve a patient’s brain performance and memory. Pulsed magnetic and transcranial electrical stimulation are noninvasive procedures that stimulate nerve cells and helps correct imbalances in the brain, guided by advanced EEG brain mapping and sLORETA. The above is a simplified explanation of a complex topic.

If you have ever had a traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as a concussion, this may have affected not only your memory at the time of the injury but also long-lasting effects. This memory impairment is especially true with repeated brain injuries, such as a fall (even when you don’t hit your head) or a car accident involving whiplash, which some may not consider a brain injury. It is this repetitive injury to the neurons, causing chronic inflammatory changes within the brain, that can alter one’s brain performance.

Tomographic Analysis), we can also see the electri cal activity of deeper brain structures. After an injury, we can even utilize a patient’s past brain wave baseline as a comparison to see how far their brain has deviated from their pre-injured brain.Brain mapsare also generated with this testing, enabling us to understand how the brain communicates and the best ways we can intervene with therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen, neurofeedback, transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation, supplementation, and more.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

The body’s blood and tissue oxygen concentrations may increase up to 20 times the normal level. For this reason, some hospitals use hyperbaric oxygen therapy to aid in the healing of burn victims and people with slow-healing wounds and to reestablish oxygen to those who underwent severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

While we normally breathe oxygen at a concentration of 21%, a patient in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber breaths 100% pure oxygen under pressure. This pressure allows oxygen to dissolve in the bloodstream and diffuse into tissues such as lymph and cerebrospinal fluids at concentra tions not possible under normal atmospheric conditions.

With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, many people with brain injuries have significantly improved healing and their brain’s overall performance. When it comes to cognitive decline such as dementia, hyperbaric oxygen has proven to help with that as well. We have seen this clinically in our center for the past 20 years.

HBOT and Alzheimer’s A new study, recently published in the peer-reviewed medical journalAging, marks the first time non-pharmaceutical clinical exploration has proved effective in reversing the main activators of Alzheimer’s disease.Researchers Dr. Efrati,

It was once thought that when a low oxygen state (ischemia) occurs in the brain, such as in a stroke, for more than a few minutes, the brain cells die, leaving irreversible damage and possibly even brain death. However, recent evidence has proved that not all the cells die—some live on in a low activity state, just idling. These idling neurons make up what is called the “recoverable brain.”

Many therapies and techniques already discussed can help one heal from these injuries. One of the more promising therapies is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT is a treatment that utilizes oxygen to enhance healing throughout the body. By definition, hyperbaric means: more (hyper); pressure (baric). Therefore, HBOT is a therapy that utilizes oxygen under pressure.

Using a sophisticated brain imaging technique called a SPECT scan, doctors have been able to show that after hyperbaric oxygen therapy, these areas of recoverable brain wake up and start functioning again. This therapy has been a miracle for many patients and loved ones afflicted with vari ous neurological conditions ranging from stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, autism, traumatic brain injury, and even Lyme disease. Through hyperbaric oxygen therapy, oxygen concentrations increase above what the blood could normally deliver to the brain, and the “recoverable brain” cells are jump-started back to life!

The brain needs a lot of energy and proper nutrients to function optimally. Here are a few nutrients you can use as supplements to help with memory and overall brain function.

“After dedicating our HBOT research to exploring its impact on the areas of brain functionality and age-related cognitive decline, we have discovered for the first time HBOT induces degradation and clearance of pre-existing amyloid plaques (treatment), and the appearance of newly formed plaques (prevention),” said Ashery. “Elderly patients suffering from significant memory loss at baseline revealed an increase in brain blood flow and improvement in cognitive performance, demonstrating HBOT’s potency to reverse core elements responsible for the development of Alzheimer’s disease.”

• Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ACL): Carnitine is an important molecule that helps in the energy production pathways of our mitochondria. This particular form of L-Carnitine crosses the blood-brain barrier, allowing ATP concentrations to increase in the neurons. Acetyl-L-Carnitine facilitates the transmission and production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and helps increase dopamine. ACL also acts as an antioxidant, is neuroprotective, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that certain neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, have altered disturbances and concentrations of ACL.

Dr. Ashery, and colleagues have shown that after 60 HBOT sessions, adults aged 65 and older with cognitive decline improved the blood flow to their brain by between 16–23%. These adults also had an average improvement in their memory of 16.5% and significant improvements in their attention and information processing speeds.

“By treating vascular dysfunction, we are mapping out the path toward Alzheimer’s prevention,” added Efrati, research group leader and medical advisor to Aviv Clinics. “More research is underway to demonstrate how HBOT can improve cognitive function and become an influential tool in the imperative fight against the disease.”

To begin to understand how CBD aids in pain management, it is important to learn how it works in the human body. In the early 1990s, researchers discovered the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, immunity responses, metabolism, memory, sleep—essentially, homeostasis or balance in the body.

Like other vital systems in the body, the ECS can become deficient due to stress, toxins, and trauma. This deficiency can cause various chronic and painful conditions such as joint inflammation, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, as well as other inflammatory and neurologic conditions. While our bodies naturally produce cannabinoids, if the levels are not sufficient, supplementation with CBD is key in maintaining anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

How Can Natural Harmony Help? Natural Harmony offers several 100% organic CBD product options:

One of the leading reasons aging adults seek medical attention is for pain relief. The Diagnosis In December of 2006, I was reeling from a traumatic relationship breakup and was trying to emerge once again as myself, apart from this man I loved. I sought therapy for the emotional roller coaster I was on and was trying to move forward with a shaky, immensely sad founda tion. My yearly mammogram had been sched uled at least six months prior to this unfortunate life event and even though I was fragile and questioning everything about myself, my life, and my future, showing up was a no-brainer.

“My head was spinning. How could this be happening to me? I ate well, took vitamins and determinedshaken,wasotherwiseexercised,supplements,andtookgoodcareofmyself.Therewasnohistoryofcancerinmyfamily.IscaredandbutIwastofighttolive.”

Two days after my appointment, the call came that I needed to go back for more views. The same thing had happened a year or two prior, so I wasn’t particularly worried. I, along with most women, have dense breasts, and so more images were needed.Right after this second round of mammograms, I was told I needed an ultrasound to further rule out any issues. Then, after the ultrasound, I was advised to see a surgeon for a biopsy immediately. My world began to spin. I had the biopsy in the office of an amazing breast surgeon I had met a few years earlier when my mom

Iwill tell my story because I believe is it price less to hear firsthand from a holistic person who has survived cancer. There were four relat ed surgeries, thirty-four radiation treatments, and four months of chemotherapy infusions with each treatment two weeks apart. Then there was another drug with infusions every three weeks for the next year. I am not only a survivor of all this, but I am also the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever been perhaps in my entire life. There is life after cancer. There is great healing on many levels. There is great freedom in my daily thoughts that remind me to be grateful, stay fluid, and let the stuck things go. I am freer to pursue my life on my own terms. It may be a rite of passage, it may be age, but something is clicking and life continues to unfold in better and more satisfying ways. Embrace the Holistic I have been in the holistic health field forever (almost forty-five years and counting!), for ty-two of those years as a certified Rolfer. I work with clients’ body alignment to restructure bodies that have seen surgeries, trauma, and countless injuries, so through my studies and my own personal experiences and explorations, I feel I know a lot about many alternative meth ods. I have studied nutrition and exercise for years and coach my clients in those areas. In my training as a Rolfer, I developed a very holistic way of seeing health, the physical/emotional/ spiritual world, and our part in all of it.

The Beginning Soon, the medical machine took over and I was rushed from one appointment to another. I had known three women before this who had tried nonsurgical and other alternative treatments for their breast cancer, and they had all succumbed to the disease. It quickly became clear that if I wanted to live—and boy, did I—I would have to fight to do so. My lumpectomy was scheduled for the end of January 2007. I was told about a new, five-day radiation technique that involved a port being inserted in my effected breast, once the results of the lymph nodes tests became known. Unfortunately, I had one effected lymph node and was therefore not a candidate. I now faced chemotherapy and full radiation treatments afterwards. My head was spinning. How could this be happening to me? I ate well, took vitamins and supplements, exercised, and otherwise took good care of myself. There was no history of cancer in my family. I was scared and shaken, but I was determined to fight to live.

Seeing an oncologist, a radiologist, going through a battery of tests to determine that I had an estrogen-positive breast cancer…this all seemed to suck the light out of my life. I was full-tilt into the standard treatment of the allopathic medical world and found it frightening. To organize all this information, I kept a large notebook listing each appointment with each specialist. I had so many questions written down and had left space under each question to write the answer, because in such stressful circumstances it’s hard to remember what is said. My notebook was my new bible, guiding me through the maze of appointments and information I never knew I would need to know. My oncologist was a slight man with a broad, kind smile, who I trusted immediately. And the questions began. Through eight rounds of chemo,

had a scare and I accompanied her on her visits. I found out two days before New Year’s Eve that I was positive for cancer and would require surgery. I was pretty much alone. My dad had passed two years prior, my mom was living in Florida, my relationship had ended two months before, and my sister was busy with her own life. A cousin suggested that I ask my departed relatives for help in talking to God because they were so much closer than I was. I went to the cemetery where my dad and many ancestors were buried. I asked them to speak to God on my behalf, to say that I was not ready to join them because I still had much to do on Earth. I remember sobbing and praying, my dog howling as we walked around the graves of my ancestors asking for guidance. We must have been quite a sight.

For the first four chemo treatments, which took place on Thursdays, the effects would set in within 24 hours. They began Friday afternoons when I was on my way home from finishing my work week and getting my affairs settled. I would begin to feel as though I had cement drying inside my body—an acute, achy stiffness and extreme fatigue that would put me out of commission for two or three days. Monday mornings I would wake up, get into the shower, and feel my stiffness lessen. By the time my first client arrived, my joints were again mov ing and I could begin my week.

The Big Push In many ways, all the training I had done since I was twenty-five years old—the physical, emo tional and mental—were called into play during this time. I was choosing to not be a victim. I did not cause this to happen. I was not sulking. I was determined to survive this and learn from it.

I was told my hair would begin to fall out between days 10 and 14. And, just as I had been told, it did. My long hair had already been cut to chin length, but that morning in the shower, clumps of hair were sticking to my hands and all over the shower walls. Even though I knew it was coming, it

was frightening. You can’t really prepare yourself for something like that. Two days later, a friend came over with her son’s hair trimmer and she buzzed my scalp clean. I had decided I was only going to be bald once in my life, so I bought a variety of wigs ranging from lavender with bangs to a long motorcycle-mama wig. I had a short curly wig, a red wig that was brighter than Ronald McDonald’s (we compared them at a breast cancer walk!)…I was determined to have some fun with it! I wore big earrings and turbans—my clients never knew what I would look like when they came in for their sessions. The next four rounds of chemo took much longer and required a whole day to be administered. I would go in on Wednesdays, work Thursday and half of Friday, and boom—the exhaustion and drying cement sensation would hit, right on schedule. I am so thankful my oncologist took the time to see what schedule was best for me so I could receive treatment and continue to work.

Radiation started soon after the chemo was com pleted and again, I took charge of what I wanted for my schedule. Lunchtime was preferred as radiation required me to be there Monday through Friday for seven weeks. My lunch was often eaten in the car. I chose this allopathic route to surgically remove the tumor and blast out any remaining cancer cells in my body. I chose to go to a plastic surgeon who skillfully reduced my other breast so I had a matching set. I chose the year of the special new drug to inhibit my estrogen levels, since I had an estrogen-driven breast cancer. I was told there were no known side effects from this year-long drug, but they were sure known to me. Instead of feeling better after the chemo stopped, I felt worse. Nothing felt normal to me. Early in this process, my breast surgeon told me not to go on the internet for answers, to ask her instead. And for a while, I did. This time, I had to find out what was happening. I eventually found a list of side effects for this drug—and I had every one of

I refused to go on Tamoxifen, a drug that inhibits estrogen levels that is commonly taken for five years. I knew it had serious side effects, and I’d had enough. them. The body ache and joint pain were unbelievable; my entire body was tender and sore. Prior to this, perhaps due to a lot of Rolfing sessions over so many years, I’d had very little pain. Now I was in pain every day, all the time. The Long Haul I saw that year-long treatment through, and my health slowly returned after having had three surgeries to correct tissue damage from this drug. Thankfully, it was over…or so I thought. A complication led me to a surgical biopsy, where it was discovered I had necrotic tissue from the radiation. Another surgery to remove it and to match my other breast—again.

Estate planning, moving from one career to another, acutely aware that I have the opportunity in each moment to make a choice. Each of us can move into thriving in the next phase of our lives, whether it be young adulthood, middle age, or our later years. I liken this to moving into the life of a sage. While the definition of sage infers someone mature, I believe we all have wisdom within us, a sage within each of us that is not defined by age. We all have some undefined length of time left that we can approach with excitement, with curiosity, withButauthenticity.howdowe do that? It may seem counterintuitive, but first, we slow down. We move out of busy-ness into listening. We connect with our bodies and we feel. We tune into what excites us, what moves us, what brings us joy, and what breaks our heart. We move from surviving to thriving. I am writing this on the most beautiful summer morning. The trees are full, the flowers are in full bloom. Nature is thriving, flourishing. Just a few months ago it was gray and brown, and in a few months after a celebration of autumn color it will be gray again. How do we take that analogy into our own lives? Our moments of flourishing are met with gratitude. Anchoring in the energy of how it feels to thrive, knowing we can find those emotions in so many ways. The moments of quiet and rest and even darkness can lead us to uncovering what is next—the next step, or as a mentor of mine calls it, “following the spiritual breadcrumbs.”

“We all have some undefined length of time left that we can approach with excitement, with curiosity, authenticity.”with —Lauri Ingram What Are You Doing with the Rest of Your Life?

How many days of living do each of us have? What choices can we make in each moment to make the most of the time we have on this earth? How do we approach a troubled and changing world with compassion and love? How do we navigate our lives? So many questions, and for each of us a very personal answer. This morning, I learned of the passing of the leader of a company I worked for in my 30s. I spent a decade working at that company, a decade during which my personal life was very difficult, filled with the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Here I am, a few decades later and coming to terms with thriving in this last part of my life.

Following the flow of the universe, following my intuitive guidance, I am moving into what I will do with the rest of my life. There are unknowns, there is great curiosity, there is excitement, and yes, there is fear. But I also know I have no choice but to follow my inner guidance and to trust in what comesMeditation, next. mindful practices, creativity, exploration have been passions of mine for the past 10+ years. Slowly it all comes together, many roads converging, forming a path forward. I am leaning into what excites me, and making choices aligned with my intuition and my spirit. How can each of us bring those practices into our lives on a daily basis? Live our lives more fully, reinvent ourselves as we enter into the last third of our lives. For our time here is unknown, it is limited, and if we can touch one heart, one soul in the process, we have made an impact.
