HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m I hope everyone came out okay after that freak snow storm. I personally was out in the storm for 7 hours. I finally had to walk home 2 miles leaving my car at a local church. It wasn’t that cold out but it was really icy. Kingdom Comics on behalf of Alabama Phoenix Festival is having a Star Trek night Feb 13. I will be there with Borg Chips and Romulan punch. So if you want to discuss Star trek come to Kingdom Comics on the 13th.

I am always looking for people who want to write a Trek news article or a movie/television review, or even a short story they might want to share. I am also always looking for Star Trek Pictures to post in The Anvil. If you have a costume you want to show off or a meeting you were at please send me pictures to include in the Avil as well. I’m always looking for interesting items to include in our newsletter. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net

XO Briefing Wow! What strange weather! I hope everyone weathered (sorry! I couldn’t resist) our surprise snow storm without major problems. The snow was beautiful and I wanted to get out and walk in it but it was too cold. Frankly, I’m ready for Spring. Concerning ship’s business, there are several events coming up. The annual Region 2 Summit will be held March 7-9 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Jack Eaton has announced that the charity for this year’s Summit is the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Another event coming up is our Spring Cookout on April 12. And you might be interested in the Alabama Phoenix Festival on May30-June 1. Consult our Anvil for more information. That’s all this time. Ship’s Log January 11, 2014 Social We had a great social. We had pizza to eat. We played the game Redshirts that Michael won. We also watched the Lego Superhero’s movie and part of Star Trek Voyager episode “Heroes and Demons.” We also discussed Starfleet academy courses. Attendance: 10 people. Personnel Updates: MGen Yawn & his wife attended the UCA National Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, FL. He heard that Cheerleading may be a 2016 Summer Olympic event. On the way back they visited FL State University to meet new UAB head Tennis Coach and watch our ladies team. MGen Yawn volunteered at Brookside Fire Rescue for 14 hours. If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions. Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you. Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG

Star Trek News Scott Bakula inpossible NCIS spin- off. If you miss Scott Bakula (Captain Archer and Sam Beckett) then you are in for a treat this spring. Mr. Bakula will be on NCIS as Agent Pride from New Orleans and a friend of Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon). If the episode is well received; NCIS: New Orleans will be on the fall schedule. Also in the cast is CCH Pounder better known as Mrs. Fredric from Warehouse 13. She will be playing the medical examiner, Dr. Wade. Agents assisting agent Pride are Agent Brody (Zoe McLellan from Star Trek Voyager and JAG) and Agent LaSalle who has yet to be cast as of this writing. (Trektoday.com and USANews)

Star Trek Hot Wheels So, you never sure what to get your Captain that has everything Star Trek? Then you are in luck. Hot Wheels Pop Culture Assortment is putting Star Trek: Classic on its latest cars. Kirk is on a ’49 Ford C.O.E., Spock is on ’59 Chevy Delivery, Uhura is on a ’88 Jeep Wagoneer, Scotty is on a custom ’52 Chevy, Bones is on a ’38 Dodge Airflow and

Sulu is on a Midnight Otto. They look really interesting with my favorite being:

Leonard Nimoy diagnosed with Lung diease. Leonard Nimoy was seen being wheel through JFK in New York with an oxygen canister. Leonard told his fans not to worry that he has developed COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) from years of smoking. He quit

in 1985 during the filming of Star Trek: The Voyage Home. Long flights and traveling had taken a toll on him but he was now home and is doing fine. Mr. Nimoy Tweeted “I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP.” Peace and Long Life From the Hephaestus Mr. Nimoy. (Trekmovie.com, TrekToday.com) (Did I miss something? You have an interesting news item from Star Trek? Then send me your suggestions and articles at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net)

Reviews Intelligence (Monday, CBS) ***** (Warning there may be spoilers) ***** When I first saw the ads for this program I thought it was going to be a cross between Six Million Dollar Man, Jake 2.0 and Chuck. After watching the first episode it is just a serious Chuck. The lead Josh Holloway (James ‘Sawyer’ Ford of ‘Lost’) plays Gabriel Vaughn who is a Special Forces soldier who has had a chip placed in his head that gives him access to the web and spy satellites. This is like Chuck in that he can pool data from different sources to get a clearer picture of what is happening. The improvement is he doesn’t have to have a new down load every season to do the job. He still has a protection detail in the form of secret service agent Riley Neal played by Meghan Ory (Ruby form “Once Upon a Time”). She is there to protect him from doing something stupid that would get the chip lost to a foreign power. For the Star Trek fans, John Billingsley is playing Dr. Shenandoah Cassidy. Dr. Cassidy is the one who invented the chip and planted it into Josh’s brain. For the CSI fans, there is Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows) who is playing Lillian Strand the director of the intelligence agency that Josh is assigned to.

As a program it seems like another recycled program (i.e. Chuck) looking from a different angle. I liked Chuck. It was funny and the actors seemed to work well together. Intelligence, by taking it from a serious side, may make this better as it will tie in well with other drama shows that CBS seems to excel at like NCIS and Mentalist. The down side is that its regular time slot is across from Castle which already pulls in the Sci-Fi fans because of Nathan Fillion. .
