HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings, crew and passengers, This month is the annual Region 2 Summit (pg. 17). It is a convention for the ships in Region 2 which is Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and the Caribbean. We get together to discuss STARFLEET business and to learn what other clubs are doing that our club might enjoy. Also there is a Dulmuti Tournament and a Texas Hold’em Tournament. A little something for everyone. Hope you can come. I have started to do a Star Trek HeroClix game at Kingdom Comics on Friday’s. The next one will be March 16 at 7PM. This is a interesting game; similar to chess but with a few extra rules. Keep in mind how you would like to help at conventions and different area events. The more events we can be at the more we might find other Trekkies. The first event coming up is Free Comic Book Day at Kingdom Comics. It will be May 5th starting at 10AM. Let me know if you would like to help with the table, either with ideas for a display or manning it. The Anvil for April will be on Jean-Luc Picard. Send in your thoughts and ideas on Captain Picard to my email. Also if you have a review of a movie, TV show, book, game or convention send it as well. As always, Live Long and Prosper and see you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

The Mirror Universe By Crewmen 3rd Class Lewis Stockham (I.S.S. Hephaestus) Even if you are not a Star Trek fan, most people are familiar with the basic idea. Humanity is united, we have solved all our problems and we are part of an intergalactic community. We enjoy peaceful coexistence with many other species in the United Federation of Planets. Now, imagine Humanity proceeding down a much different, much darker path. In the Mirror Universe (or Evil Universe) we are imperialistic, amoral, cruel, violent! Terrans (humans) conquer other species thus creating The Terran Empire. The empire’s symbol is the Earth with a sword through it.

DVD collection called Alternate Realities, which among other things has every Mirror Universe episode ever done. By the way, it’s a great collection to own for all you fans! I was watching interviews with some of the writers and they made an interesting observation. It is fun for the actors and actresses to play “bad” versions of the character. It allows them to completely turn a known character on his/her head. In the Deep Space Nine episodes bad Sisko is a selfinvolved, self-centered pirate. As opposed to good Sisko who is a kind, compassionate and intelligent person. In the show Enterprise, bad Archer is second in command, ambitious to a fault, hostile, cruel and power hungry. He stages a coup against the captain, then attempts to seize the throne of the empire. As opposed to good Archer who is compassionate, kind, friendly and on a mission of peaceful exploration.

I have always been with humanity’s darker side. So, the Mirror Universe is fascinating to me. The Terrans are ruthless, power hungry, lustful, manipulative, and self centered. For example, it is totally permissible to assassinate your superior then take his place. It is a Shakespearian tragedy meets the Roman Empire in space.

I started thinking, what would I be like in this universe? In general, what would my evil self be like? Imagine embracing your darker side or running free with your base desires! It is good that we have self-control and restraint, but it is interesting to think about.

This universe was first introduced in the original series in a episode called Mirror, Mirror. That is why it is referred to as the Mirror Universe. A transporter accident sends Kirk, Uhara, McCoy and Scotty to the evil Enterprise. The first thing they see is Spock with a beard and other crew members using the ancient Roman salute. Simultaneously, bad Kirk, Uhara, McCoy and Scotty are transported to the good Enterprise.

Lastly, as a student of history I have imagined how history must have gone differently in that Earth. Did the Axis Powers win World War II? Going back further, maybe there were no democratic revolutions and the world is ruled by a hand full of kingdoms/empires. Most importantly, Khan must have won the Eugenics War then he united Earth under his rule thus creating the Terran Empire.

Needless to say, Kirk and company get back. Good Kirk asks good Spock how he knew it was not him. Spock says “ It is much easier for civilized people to behave like barbarians than barbarians to behave like civilized people.” It is worth mentioning, it has become a joke that your “evil self” wears a beard since “Evil Spock” did.

We have the capacity for kindness, understanding, and compassion. However, we also have the capacity for violence, cruelty and hate. I believe that is the idea Gene Roddenberry and the other writers wanted to convey. Once again Star Trek helps us examine the good and bad sides of our own Humanity. It makes you think, as all great science fiction should!

As I mentioned, the symbol of the Terran Empire is the Earth with a sword through it. To me it represents an attitude of collective aggression and imperialism. The symbol is extremely anti-humanist. I have a USS Hephaestus

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Captain Log – Stardate ******.* The Hephaestus is back to operational status but we are still docked at Deep Space Nine: to do research on the Mirror Universe. Several Deep Space Nine personal have had interaction with the Mirror Universe and may shed light on why they caused our main computer shutdown. We still don’t know who the saboteurs were or how they were able to infiltrate the ship. Luckily they screwed up and did not get what they wanted.

going to get a show on Vulcan. Can you believe that!” “I can’t say that I can as I don’t know the art scene very well. I hate to cut this short however I have a meeting. Was there something I can help you with?” She frowned for a second but her smile quickly replaced it, “Oh yeah, sorry. I need a couple of things from my cabin for the show but the ship is still locked down and I can’t get them.” “Let’s see if I can do something for our VIP.” I tapped my combadge, “Lt. Holsey, I need a security officer to escort a VIP onto the ship?”

***** I finished up some paperwork when my ready room door chimed. “Enter!” Phillip walk in and leaned against the bulk head. “I have an appointment with General Kira in ten minutes and wanted to know if you want to tag along.”

Lt. Holsey voice staticly came over the badge, “I am free. Who, and where do I need to meet them?” I replied, “VIP Carly Strickland. She is on the Promenade in front of the bar. She needs a few things from her quarters. Please see that she gets what every she needs.”

“Phillip, I am the ship’s Captain. I can’t just take off anytime I want just to chat up station personnel,” I chuckled. “I left my captain’s coat in my quarters. Let’s go there and then head to the General’s office.”

Sandra quickly replied, “Will do. Be there in two minutes.”

Three minutes later we were on the promenade of Deep Space Nine headed towards a turbo lift when I heard my name.

“There you go Miss Carly. Anything else before I get moving?”

“Captain Miller, Captain Miller, can I speak with you a minute.” Carly Strickland came darting up to me. Pausing a few steps from me, the dark hair girl took a few deep breathes when I turn to look at her.

She did a pirouette, “Thanks, Captain,” then skipped over to a bench to wait for Sandra.

“Miss Carly, good to see you. I hope our problems has not inconvenienced you too much?”

She muttered under her breather, “This place has never been the same since the chief left.” Smiling at me, “Captain Miller, what a pleasant surprise. I thought my meeting was with your First Officer?”

“Let’s go Phillip,” I said as we headed to the turbo lift to go to Ops. General Kira turned from the operations table in the center of Ops as the turbo lift came to a halt a foot short of the opening.

She gave a big smile, “On the contrary, I’ve been visiting Bajor’s many temples and have had the time of my life drawing them. My agent has secured several shows for my work because of the popularity of Bajoran culture since the Dominion War. I’m even USS Hephaestus

I smiled back, “I finished my paperwork early so I thought I would tag along. I hope you don’t mind? 4

Phillip and I exchanged glances as I spoke, “We need to know if you have any information on the Mirror Universe that is not in the official reports?”

Sorry we are late. Not use to big places and the time it takes to get around.” She shook my hand and then pointed to a door at the top of Ops, “Let’s use Sisko’s office to talk.”

Kira scrunched her nose, “I thought that was what your First Officer said. I hoped I had miss heard. I have tried to put that experience behind me…”

We went up to were she point and went in. She went behind the desk as we took the chairs in front. She picked up a baseball on the desk and started to throw it from one hand to the other. “So gentlemen, what can I do for you? I thought all the repairs were done on your ship?”

Reviews TV Star Trek Discovery – Reviewed by FCapt MarkAdam Miller We are at the end of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery. Did we get a Star Trek show or did CBS fall flat? This is a hard question to answer. Star Trek can mean different things to different people. The fans themselves are divided over what is Star Trek because the series that introduced them to the franchise is what they think is Star Trek. Who is the better Captain? Movies vs. TV? Which is the better series? All these questions are part of the discussion when it comes to Star Trek. These same question come up when talking about Star Trek: Discovery. The major problem to over come is when the show is set. This is placed ten years before Captain Kirk took over the Enterprise. The problem with this is that the Discovery starship out classes everything that is the original series’ Enterprise starship. If this is what the ship looks like ten years before the Enterprise then the Enterprise must be a relic of the Federation that is still in service. Furthermore, Discovery has many technological advances that were introduced in the later series (e.g. holographic communication introduced in Deep Space Nine). How can this take place then ten years before Kirk? It is never answered in the series and it may be several seasons before we get an answer. There is other smaller problems like the change in Klingons appearance or Sarek having an adopted daughter. These have been problems before like the Klingons appearance in The Motion Picture and Spock’s brother, Sybok, in Star Trek V. These problem are small because they can be over looked as being an ambiguity (i.e. Klingons look different because we don’t see them that much and Spock keeps his personal life private). The big question is: what defines Star Trek? The answer, I believe, is what defines Star Trek is its storyline. Does the storyline give me hope for a future where things are getting better because we are learning how to treat one another better? Star Trek: Discovery does this but it took the whole season to come to this one point. *Spoiler* In a speech by Burnham (Senequa Martin-Green) she says, “ 'The only way to defeat fear is to tell it no.' No, we will NOT take shortcuts on the path to righteousness. No, we will NOT break the rules that protect us from our basest instincts. No, we will NOT allow desperation to destroy moral authority.” The problem that the Federation and the Klingons had was they feared each other. They had to destroy each other to end the fear. This is Star Trek. To make a better future we need to understand each other better. This reason is suspect because it took Discovery 15 episodes to come to this conclusion. Each episode needed a few other defining moments to show hope for the future. This did not happen. The series as a whole has several good episodes that are done well and are very entertaining (e.g. Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad, What’s Past Is Prologue). We also get some good Science Fiction with the Spore Drive. We get good characters from Sonequa Martin Green as Michael Burnham and Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd. These are enough to want to watch this program. The problems with the program include Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou who mumbles through her lines making it hard to understand her and James Frain as Sarek who is too emotional as a Vulcan. Another problem is the use of the Klingon language. Please, we know the Klingons do not speak English. If I wanted to read I would have picked up a book. I am watching a TV program. Start with simple phrases that everyone USS Hephaestus

knows as Klingon and then change to English. Don’t make us read every time the Klingons speak. It takes us away from seeing what is going on in the program. This last point is the biggest problem and needs to be resolved before they do more episodes. The program has the Star Trek feel but needs to have more stand-alone episodes instead of this one long story arch. I look forward to seeing more and I hope that CBS will take some of the thoughts of the fans into consideration. Otherwise, Star Trek: Discovery will have the same fate as Star Trek: Enterprise. Comics Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken (IDW) – Review by FCapt MarkAdam Miller By Scott & David Tipton(author) and J.K. Woodward(Illustrator) The Mirror Universe is one of the great storylines in the Star Trek universe. There was the original episode in TOS (Mirror, Mirror), five episodes in Deep Space Nine , two episodes in Enterprise and the new Discovery series had 5 episodes. The Next Generation did not have any Mirror Universe episodes which were missed by the fans of Star Trek. This book fills the void that was left by the missed opportunity in The Next Generation TV series. This is a collection of the five-issue IDW mini comic book series of the same name. This book shows how the lives of The Next Generation would be in the Mirror Universe. This books covers most of the characters we know from the TV series but its main focus is on Jean-Luc Picard. We see him captain the Stargazer and how he becomes captain of the Enterprise-D. We also get to see how these ships are compared to their counterparts in the regular reality. The storyline is well written and fits well between what we know from the TOS and Deep Space Nine episodes. They add some of their own thoughts that may diverge from DS9 because in DS9 the Terran Empire has completely fallen where in this story the Terran Empire still controls the area around the Earth solar system. Another indication that this is well done is the one-time characters that pop up in the book (e.g. Edwar Jellico, Leah Brahms and Admiral Quinn). These additions make it a good fit with what we know of the regular reality. This is a book that every Mirror Universe fan needs for his bookshelf. Rate: AAAAA

Star Trek News & More Why Discovery is on CBS All Access CBS CEO Leslie Moonves gave an explanation for why Star Trek: Discovery was put on CBS All Access: “Star Trek could have gone on CBS, it could have gone on Showtime, it could have gone directly to Netflix instead of just international, for a lot of money. There is a distinction. The Good Fight is a spin-off of a successful CBS show. It is sort of different on All Access, they can be serialized. On CBS we try to avoid that generally. Network television generally works better when it is not serialized” This flies in the face of Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise that had story arcs throughout their run on network television. Mr. Moonves has also said that the new Star Trek series was the perfect original series to drive potential subscribers to CBS' streaming service as its fans are "Not averse to paying for what they are getting." This seems the better reason for putting it on CBS All Access other than the potential for serialization. Time will tell if Mr. Moonves is right or just using the Star Trek to line CBS’s pockets. Brush up Your Klingon The Royal Albert Hall in London is having a Star Trek: Live screening in June. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing live to screenings of Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). As a salute to the fans, The Royal Albert Hall gave two free tickets to the first 10 people who placed orders in Klingon. The Box office staff took a crash course in Klingon from Alex Greene. Mr. Green commented, “not Holvam Qatlh charghchu’laH QuchDu’ Hab ghajbogh Humanpu’vetlh, ‘ach jInmolvam quvvaD, tlhIngan Hol lughojmeH Humanpu’, vItIv.” (“These simple humans with their smooth foreheads will never fully master my complex language, but I’m happy to help them learn enough to run their silly project.”) Katarzyna Kuchnicka, Assistant Manager at the Royal Albert Hall box-office, said: “We’re used to organizing tickets for people from all over the world, but this is the first time I’ve been required to take a course in an alien language. When I first heard Klingon spoken, I thought it sounded a bit like a cat coughing up a fur ball, but there’s actually a lot more to the language than you first think. Yes, it’s very harsh, but I suppose that sort of fits. Klingons are pretty stern.” The two concerts will take place in the first weekend of June: Star Trek – In Concert Saturday 2 June, Auditorium 2:30pm & 7:30pm £30-£70

Star Trek Beyond – In Concert Sunday 3 June, Auditorium 2:30pm £30-£70

If you are going to London you might want to check this out but make sure you are fluent in Klingon or have a Klingon dictionary handy. (www.treknews.net)

Doctor Who News – By LtJG Matt Boyd Hello Whovians! The famous vworp, that sound of the TARDIS that says, “get ready for the adventure” is followed by the title “DOCTOR WHO”. Every time the Doctor has changed the title sequence has also. Here is the beginning shot. Magical isn’t it? We lost a few people during the changing of the guard, the lead writer, the actor, and unbeknownst to me until now, the composer. The just as famous theme that has accompanied the title since the reboot in 2005 was done by Murray Gold who is also leaving. That theme has had some changes in the past but not very significant and the bare bones of it has always been there. I haven’t seen or heard the official new theme, but it is coming. On a different note, I love graphic novels, I am really happy that I can read Doctor Who adventures in that form. Titan Comics has announced a new three-part comic series, starting June 2018, featuring the Seventh Doctor and his companion Ace. The first issue will have four variant collectable covers. Three art covers by artists Alice X. Zhang, Simon Myers, and Christopher Jones and one photo cover by Will Brooks. The title of this story is Operation Volcano. Don’t forget to keep a lookout for it. Do you remember buying the novelization of your favorite Doctor Who episode? It was nice to be able to relive those adventures before the days of the internet, or the VCR. They haven’t done that with the new series, until now; beginning April 2018 five new novelizations of Doctor Who are coming out in “Target” style. The five Target novelizations coming out are Rose by Russell T. Davies, The Christmas Invasion by Jenny T. Colgan, The Day of the Doctor by Steven Moffat, Twice Upon a Time by Paul Cornell and City of Death by James Goss. I recently read the novelization of an unproduced Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) story Shada. The title of the novel is Shada (Doctor Who: The Lost Adventures by Douglas Adams). Gareth Roberts adapted the scripts by Douglas Adams to write the novel.

David Ogden Stiers – March 3, 2018 (age 75) Mr. Stiers will best remember as the M.A.S.H. character Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester III. Next Generation fans will remember him as Timicin from the episode Half a Life. This was one of The Next Generation episodes that tried to look at both sides of an issue. The issue that this episode dealt with was what defines a good life. Mr. Stiers will also be remembered for his voice over work including Disney films Beauty and the Beast (1991), Pocahontas (1995), and Lilo & Stitch (2002). His talent will be missed. Ship’s Log February 3, 2018 – Navigation meeting

Attendance – 18 people February 17, 2018 – Monthly Texas Hold’em Poker

To better get a sense of what the crew wants to do, I decided to have a dinner to pull together people who want to be more involved in the ships working. We covered possible conventions, other social menus, online help and newsletter help that they could be involved with. Lots of ideas were discussed and will be implement over the next year. Hoping that this could become a quarterly option with the next one being a carry-in at the Captain’s home.

The monthly poker game was moved from the Pott’s to the Mohney’s due to illness. We had a fun game that lasted about 3 hours. Interesting part of the game is the four hands that the captain won because of the final card. These wins lead the captain to winning the game. Snacks and drinks were available. Attendance – 4 people February 22, 2018 – Exploring Trek

Attendance – 6 people

We discussed the TNG: Tapestry. We had a lively discussion that covered the plot, the characters, relationship to other Star Trek episodes and similarity with the movie It’s a Wonderful Life and the book A Christmas Carol. Snacks were provided. We voted to discuss DS9: Little Green Men for the next meeting with Crewman Bill DeBarr as facilitator.

February 8, 2018 – Beyond Trek The discussion for the night was the movie Forbidden Planet (1956). The discussion included the time frame when the movie was made, the actors involved, and the technology both fictional (story line) and real (production). We also discussed its place in Science Fiction movies and its possible contribution to Star Trek. Snacks and drinks were provided. We had a new person who was interested in other aspect of the Hephaestus.

Attendance – 9 people Captain’s Log February 9, 16, 23 2018 – HeroClix

Attendance – 11 people

As a service to Kingdom Comics, I have taken on the task of running Star Trek HeroClix Away Team game on Friday nights when I am in the Birmingham area. We will see if this will bring in new people for the ship.

February 10, 2018 – February Social We had a great social. We had 4 new people who have been to our discussion group but not to a social. Promotions were handed out to Tara, Katrina, Krista, Curtis, Matt and Andi. Congratulations! Part of the group played Dalmuti and the other part watch Star Trek shows. The Dalmuti was won by the Captain but he let the second-place winner choose a prize from the prize box. A prize was also given to the person who was the Great Peon. Snacks and drinks were available.

Attendance – range of 2 to 4 people Log entries: If you have did something you think the crew would be interested in then write up a personal log and send it to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Let your crewmates know what you are up to.
