HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil. Cover: STARFLEET Logo

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, Happy New Year. I hope you had a good Christmas and was able to ring in the New Year in Style. We have many opportunities to recruit people into the club. We have two panel discussions a month at Kingdom Comics which includes Exploring Trek and the new discussion group, Beyond Trek. Beyond Trek will explore other Sci-Fi related movies and TV shows that are favorites of the crew and Exploring Trek which is of course about all things Star Trek. They are the second and the fourth Thursdays of the month. We will also have a social once a month and the monthly poker game. You can also play poker online with us on Friday nights on Pokerstars.net. If interested in the on-line Poker let me know and I will give you Pete Mohney’s contact info. He is the one in charge of the online poker club. (Side note: Poker is at Dennis Evans’ this month instead of the Millers.) I’m looking at participating in local conventions to recuit new members. I have two that I am involved with already. Let me know what conventions you think might be good to consider. If you have an idea of what we can do at social then bring them up at the next meeting so we can plan to implement the ideas. As always, Live Long and Prosper and see you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

To Boldly Go… By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller When we talk about Starfleet are we talking about the organization that is on the TV show Star Trek or are we talking about the fan club the was created because of it? Lets look at both of these concepts.

Does this make Starfleet a military organization? There is a military feel to Starfleet but it is more for organizational purposes than it is as a fighting force. Starfleet wants to make friends with everyone but if you don’t want to be friendly (i.e. Klingons, Romulans, Borg, Dominion) then we have defense abilities. Starfleet is compared to the Coast Guard which is a good comparison as Starfleet does patrol the UFP helping ships and planets that are in distress. A more accurate description is the National Guard. They have a military aspect but they also are used to help in disasters and provide support for emergency services.

Starfleet Command The U.S.S. Enterprise (TOS) was part of an organization called Starfleet Command. In the beginning of the show several names where used for the organization that the Enterprise belonged to (Star Service, Space Central and United Earth Space Probe Agency) until under show producer Gene L. Coon it was formalized as Starfleet Command. Gene L. Coon was known to have a hand in creating the some of the framework in Star Trek (i.e., Klingons, United Federation of Planets and the Prime Directive). To explain these other names of Starfleet writers have incorporated them into the other Star Trek sereies especially Star Trek: Enterprise. This give a historical aspect to the names. Example: The United Earth Probe Agency was a forerunner of Starfleet Command. It still was a company on earth and would assist in help building ships for Starfleet command. This is similar to what Lockheed Martin does for NASA.

Starfleet presents an interesting concept on how we need to explore space. We cannot go out with a superior attitude that we know what is best. We need to be able to see differences and be able to work with those difference without harming ourselves or others. STARFLEET Internatioanl, Inc. What does STARFLEET International have to do with Star Trek’s Starfleet. STARFLEET was started by a Star Trek fan club in Texas called the U.S.S. Enterprise. They had a very successful fan club and others wanted to copy them. On May 23, 1974 the USS Enterprise reorganized under the name of STARFLEET. By the end of 1974, fourteen chapters had been formed in the US. The newsletter (STARFLEET Communications) was also know as the best source of Star Trek News. Since Starfleet is in charge of the ships and each chapter is considered a ship; they decided to call the organization STARFLEET.

What then is Starfleet? Starfleet started out as an space exploration arm of United Earth and then evolved in to an arm of the United Federation of Planets (UFP). This seems rather simple but by exploring space you would need to have the ability to confront the unknown. This means you would need scienctists and engineers to handle unknow diseases, space anomalies and emergencies. Also you would need diplomatic skills to interact with the unknown species you encountered. If your diplomatic skills failed then you would need some defenses to keep the hostiles at bay. Starfleet is more than an exploration organization. Because of Starfleet’s unique mission they created thier own academy. Starfleet Academy trains personal needed to explore space. USS Hephaestus

Today STARFLEET International, Inc. is 231 chapters with 5,253 members as of this writing. STARFLEET is in all caps to differentiate us from the Starfleet Command in the Star Trek series. STARFLEET has rules on what it takes to be part of the club but leaves a lot open to the chapters on how they run their local club. Most of the rules are there 2

Individual chapters have the ability to promote up to the rank of Commander. If you are involved in region and fleet level activities then you can be promoted to Captain on up to Admiral. Chapters may differ in why they meet and how often. Chapter activities may include fundraising, costuming, parties and writing (fan fiction or newsletter). Some even put on conventions. Terran Empire News intercepted transcript

Ask the Terran By Crewman Lewis Stockman Dear Lewis,

Dear Lewis

What is the most efficient way to take control of a planet and to subjugate its population?

Which side is best to tie your gold sash? Sincerely, Confused cadet

Sincerely, Wannabe Imperial Governor

Dear Confused cadet,

Dear Wannabe Imperial Governor,

Tie your sash on the opposite side of whichever hand you favor. You always want to have quick access to your knife if attacked.

Find a person or small group willing to betray their own people in exchange for power and wealth. Let them do the dirty work. Then after you have secured the planet… execute them.

I am a graduate of Starfleet Academy; I know many things. – Worf, DS9: The Darkness and the Light USS Hephaestus

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Summary: The Hephaestus is at Deeps Space Nine for repairs. After the main computer went through a system reboot it shut down and is not coming back up. The problem was caused by someone looking for our cloaking device. The cloaking device is on its own system so it wasn’t found.

STARFLEET security has been notified. Fortunately the Dejah Thoris was near by to help so they are covering our patrol till we are up and running again. Wernher von Braun is only 12 parsecs away so DS9 is protected for now. Anything I am missing?” The XO looked up from his P.A.D.D, “That sounds like that covers it.. Poker Friday?” “Yeah,” MarkAdam said, “I have a holosuite at Quarks set up. I going to talk to Captain Kira to see if she can get me a better price. I think Quark needs his books looked at, the cheat.” “I’ll let those who play know,” Phillip piped up. “Anything you want me to do that night while you are at poker?” “Just keep looking to find out what happen? Also keep security on its toes. Make sure James has all security posts changing on regular intervals to keep them alert. Lets hope we get to the bottom of this.”

“Tribble Fur,” exclaimed Fleet Captain Miller. “Main computer is still down. Looks like Admiral Potts is using some old computer tech till he can get the system up again. Luckily we are back in port at DS9. At least another week till all systems are up and running. The problem is we still don’t know if they were trying to sabotage our cloaking device or steal it.

USS Hephaestus

“Check,” replied Phillip, “Good Luck. Make sure you let them keep some of their money.” “Their money! I need to just make sure mine doesn’t get away from me!”

Star Trek News & More New place to Star Trek Shop It seems that Amazon is going where everyone has gone before. Amazon has jumped on the Star Trek shop band wagon. The shop will have exclusive tees, cases and pop sockets featuring Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek: The Original Series themed items. The other series will be added in later months. This may be so that CBS can promote its new series by offering it on this exclusive basis. Only time will tell if this will be a good place to get Star Trek items. Looking through some of the items there were a few t-shirts that would be interesting to have but the prices seemed a little high for exclusive items. (www.startrek.com)

Belated Happy Birthday to Nichelle Nichelle Nichols, the original Uhura, celebrated her 85th birthday on December 28, 2017. Ms. Nichols’ portrayal of Uhura broke down many racial stereotypes of the time making her the first African American to be seen as something other than a maid. Her role allowed her to speak up for those who were not getting equal treatment. An example: Ms. Nichols worked with NASA to recruit women and African Americans for programs that were seen as white male dominant. Ms. Nichols celebrated her birthday with friends and family at La Piazza Restaurant at The Grove in Los Angles. (www.treknews.net)

Tarantino’s Star Trek Has A Writer Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek looks like it is a possiblitiy. Paramount Pictures has tapped Mark L. Smith to write the script for Tarantino’s film. Mr. Smith is best know for the file The Revenant (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy). Patrick Stewart is interested in being a part of the film so that he can work with Tarantino. NASA and Quantum Computing – By Crewman Curtis Salors NASA houses a quantum computer at its NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility. In addition to housing and testing the computer, which is dubbed "D-Wave Two", it also invests heavily in quantum computing efforts. NASA has joined with Google and non-profit Universities Space Research Association (USRA) to form the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL). Together they are exploring the emerging significance of quantum computation. How is a quantum computer different from a classical one? Theoretically, the superiority of the quantum computer is exponential. Classical computers (including supercomputers) use binary code to switch the voltage of tiny wires Off or On. Binary code is the 'zeros and ones' used by software engineers to tell the computer's processing unit (CPU) what wires within itself to switch Off/On. Quantum computers, on the other hand, delegate to nature, allowing nature to do the computational work. Similar to how the nuclear bomb utilizes the natural atom to harness its power; the quantum computer utilizes electrons, photons and the quantum entanglement of particles to harness computational power. It isn't easy. USS Hephaestus

The Anvil

NCC-2004

The computer needs a built-in refrigeration system capable of cooling it's Quantum Processing Unit (QPU)to almost 459 degrees below zero. This renders the special metals within the processing unit as superconductors. Moreover, magnetic and radiation shields must be built-in to shelter the sensitive computer chip. The approximate price for a quantum computer? Around $10 Million USD. The leverage that quantum computers give to society is hard to explain, even for computer scientists. Primarily, quantum computers will assist society only where classical computers cannot achieve the task. In such a time as this, when the volume of certain databases long ago exploded beyond human fathom; even classical supercomputers may not have the processing power to analyze big data and form it into helpful and actionable instructions for humans. Especially in cases where variables within that data continue to increase dramatically; as in the case of drug interactions/reactions data bases and in financial markets data. One of the physics-related reasons behind the awesome power of a quantum computer is its capacity for a mysterious, computational indecision (which may bring about true AI). As opposed to classical computers which have tiny circuits that are, decidedly, turned either On or Off, quantum computers have qubits that can remain "undecided" until the calculation is over. This puts the D-Wave's processing unit into a "superposition" to analyze big data. At any rate, the mysteries of quantum computing continue and NASA and QuAIL intend to bring them to light. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_entanglement, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Wave_Two https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Wave_Systems, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZTry5r6NAw

Doctor Who News – By Ensign 1st Class Matt Boyd Hello Whovians!!! I hope you had a Happy Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanza, and Happy New year! This Christmas Special has come and gone, and we now have a new Doctor! I watched the Special a little bit after it aired (So I could fast forward through the commercials, haha!! Take that adverts.) While watching the show I laughed, I cried, I literally laughed and cried, I was very emotional. You see, when a Special is also the changing of the guard, there tends to be emotions. This time was no different. We mourn the loss of the current Doctor and there is anxiety for the show, we ask ourselves will we like the new actor. Will we like the new story they have written? Sometimes it takes a while for the new one to get settled in. I think this time the Doctor will have it together from the get go.

Seeing Stars‌ Star Trek Las Vegas Convention, August 1-5, 2018. TOS: William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig TNG: Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Denise Crosby, John de Lancie DS9: Terry Farrell, Nicole de Boer VOY: Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan ENT: Linda Park, Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery and John Billingsley DIS: Jason Isaacs, Mary Chieffo, Wilson Cruz, Kenneth Mitchell and James Frain Make-up Artist Michael Westmore will also be there to turn a celebrity in to a Cardassian.

Never Forget… Bruce Gray – 13 December 2017 (age 81) Bruce was a Canadian-born actor who started acting on stage in the 60’s and moved to TV and Movies in the 70’s. He played many roles, but Trekkies know him for playing Surak in the ENT: Awakening, Admiral Chekote in DS9: The Circle, and Sky Marshal Dienes in Star Ship Trooper. He was also in Babylon 5, Stargate SG1 and made a brief appearance on Boston Legal with William Shatner and John Larroquette. Jon Paul Steuer – January 1, 2018 (age 33) In Star Trek he was the first to play Worf’s son, Alexander Rozhenko, in the episode Reunion. He won the part because he was the only child to be able to sit still for the 3 hours it took to make the Klingon facial prosthetics. He lost the part a year later to Brian Bonsall because he had not grown much, and his voice was not deep enough. He played Quentin Kelly on the show Grace Under Fire. He left the show because of the lead actress Brett Butler’s erratic behavior. He quit acting because all job interviews would be asking about Brett Butler instead of him. May we all give up a Klingon death yell so that Sto-Vo-Kor may know of his coming. Patricia Hicks – January 4, 2018(age 73) Pat served as First Officer under Danny Potts and continued as my First Officer when I took over as Commanding Officer. Pat enjoyed writing short stories, researching family genealogy, and traveling. She loved her cats. She received her undergraduate degree at Samford University and her Master of Library Science at the University of Alabama. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, International Sorority for Women Educators. She taught 11th grade English at Mortimer Jordan High School from the late 60's to the late 70's before becoming a librarian at Bragg Middle School where she retired. She is survived by her sister Florence (Flo) Hurst who is our chief engineer. John Young – January 5, 2018 (age 87) Young was an American astronaut, naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer. He became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as Commander of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972. He enjoyed the longest career of any astronaut, becoming the first person to fly six space missions (with seven launches, counting his lunar liftoff) over the course of 42 years of active NASA service. He was the only person to have piloted, and been commander of, four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, the Apollo Command/Service Module, the Apollo Lunar Module, and the Space Shuttle. In 1965, Young flew on the first manned Gemini mission, and commanded another Gemini mission the next year. In 1969 during Apollo 10, he became the first person to fly solo around the Moon. He drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle on the Moon's surface during Apollo 16, and is one of only three people to have flown to the Moon twice. He also commanded two Space Shuttle flights, including its first launch in 1981, and served as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1974 to 1987. Young retired from NASA in 2004. If anyone has any suggestions let me know so I can post it on the challenge. – Lt. Phillip Mangina Jr. (1st Officer), Director, Hephaestus Red Shirt Challenge I would like to start a challenge this year of reading. I will try to post what books I am reading and give at least a rating if not a review. I am looking for others to tell what they are reading and at least a rating of the books they are reading. Lets see if we can read 100 books total before the end of the year. So if we get ten people reading then it would be ten books per person. Let’s get reading. – Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller (If you have a goal for weight loss, quitting smoking or New Year’s resolution then let us know what you are working on through the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Red.Shirt.Challenge/ so we can encourage you)
