HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greetings, I apologizes for not getting out a December issue of the Anvil. I’m still not sure where the time went in December. I was finally able to go home (Dayton, Ohio) for Christmas. I have not been able so for some time now do to my job in the past years. I had a great time at Christmas. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and hope the New Year has started off well for you. We are always looking for ideas to do at our socials. If you think of something you think the group would be interested in we have 8 socials that we can plug them into. I say 8 because 3 of the socials are the April cookout, The Captains Cookout and Fall Feast. Also January will have been done by the time you receive this. So please send us your idea either at my email address or look for us on Facebook. If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net
XO Briefing We made it to 2013 in spite of the Mayan Calendar. A complete new year stretches out before us, full of potential for exciting events. We can look forward to several Starfleet events. First, of course, the Region 2 Summit will take place March 8-10 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It will be held at the Shoals Hotel in Sheffield, Alabama. There will be the usual functions, such as the Admiral’s dinner on Friday night, the banquet on Saturday night, and others. In addition, the 2013 Starfleet International Conference will be August 1-4, in Dallas, Texas. The theme for IC 2013 is “The year of the Phoenix.” Base of operations will be the “luxurious MCM Elegante Hotel in the heart of Dallas.” (sounds expensive) Also, we can look forward to our own social events. First, our monthly meetings at Pete and Sue Ellen’s will continue. Then we will have our major events: the Spring Cookout, the Captain’s Cookout, and the Fall Feast. These are always fun, with games, TV episodes and plenty of food. So make plans now to attend. That’s all this month. Looking forward to seeing you at our socials. If you have any comments or questions please email me. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net

Star Trek News Army using Star Trek Replicators. The Army, with the help of Applied Minds Inc. and Exponent, has a way of replicating parts and tools they may need in the field. The replicators are a 3D printer or a CNC Mills. Using a CAD program they design what they need and then the Printer/Mill makes the object. The 3Dprinter makes the object out of resin and glue using a layering design. The CNC Mill uses metal and scruples the item using lasers or water. The Army has two mobile labs that can be brought in by helicopter. The labs also have the ability to contact any one who might be able to help with a problem that needs to be designed. Enterprise to be released on Blu-ray March 26th the sixth Star Trek Series Enterprise will come out on Blu-ray.
