HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greeting from your Captain, I was in a car mood so I have put several pictures of cars that have a Star Trek theme. It is interesting how people embrace Star Trek into their vehicles. Do you have an interesting idea for the Anvil? Do you have a theme that you might want us to explore? Do you have an article, news story or fictional story that you would like to share? Then send you idea and stories to the email address below. As a reminder, the Alabama Theater is showing Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan on July 18th. The Alabama Theater is hoping people will come in costume. Look on our Facebook group for further updates. Kingdom Comics is having another Warp 11.9 party on June 28. The discussion will be about the Enterprise series. Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net https://www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/ Do you have an interesting idea for the Anvil. A theme

Ship’s Log May 3, 2014 – Free Comic Book Day Several people were in attendance at Free Comic Book Day at Kingdom Comics and at Legion Comics in the Birmingham area. I was dressed in my science uniform and passed out several cards to promote both the Hephaestus and Alabama Phoenix Festival. Attendance: 5+ crewmen (not all sections reported in) May 17, 2014 - Social At the social we discussed the best and worst episodes of Star Trek. Sue Ellen was helpful in bringing up the episodes on the TV so that if we did not recognize the episode by title and description we were able to watch part of the episode. We also enjoyed pizza (paid by donation) and sodas. .
Attendance: 10 people.
May 30 – June 1, 2014 Alabama Phoenix Festival I was the Trek Track director for the Alabama Phoenix Festival (APF) for this year. We had 10 panels that covered several different subjects within the Star Trek universe (i.e. philosophy, engineering, and trivia). The panel with the biggest attendance was Star Trek vs. Star Wars: Jedi Mind Meld II. Crewmen Diedra Robinson was also on several panels with me. Her experiences in costuming and in television added a lot to the panel discussions. Attendance: 10 crewmen from the Hephaestus attended. Personnel Updates: Diedra Robinson passes her O.T.S. (Officer Training School exam) and will be promoted to ensign. Ensign Donald Arnold has received two Star Awards: for the College of Humor and the College of Starship Operations. Donald has taken over 107 courses with 10 distinctions and 47 Honors. The Academy is a way to have fun and learn many things about the Fandom of Star Trek and Science Fiction. If you would like to take academy course then you can go to http://acad.sfi.org/ to sign up. MGen Neil Yawn received a letter of Commendation for his work with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade. This is a great honor for Neil. Congratulations! You can see letter after the Starfleet Marine Corps Report If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, MGen Neil Yawn Preformed 14-hours volunteer service to the Brookside Fire Rescue Service. MGen Yawn visited the U S Park Service National Sea Shore at Narvarre Beach, Florida. BGen Roy Green, Reserve (#19940) exp 4/14, has advised me that he has applied for renewal via the US Mail. He has received no word on the process. He advised me he mailed it in April 2014. The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions. Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you. Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG (See next page for Neil’s Letter of Commendationâ˜ş

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures: Return of the Action By Donald Arnold The bridge of the Enterprise J was quiet except for the computers as William T. Kirk sat rather silently in his chair in confusion of the radio message that had been sent from Sigma Iotia II. The message had been from an aging shadow. A dying Bella Oxmyx had sent a radio message to the Federation. With Admiral Kirk another mission to be completed, it was up to his great great grandson and this new crew to see what the man wanted. The office was dusty. Windows were broken. The aged guns hung on the wall. However now, the place was dark, the cases were broken, and “The Book,” was nowhere in sight. Bill, his first officer Spock III, and Leah McCoy, the descendants of the legends who visited here almost two hundred years ago. A nurse, a woman who was younger than Oxmyx by about twenty years led them in. A dusty cough trailed to the voice that said, “You’re not Kirk.” Bill wasn’t surprised Oxmyx expected the Kirk he knew. He responded, “I am Kirk. Just not the Kirk you remember. I know the story though. What happened? Why were we called here?” Krako and the others stood waiting for their new boss to give orders as he picked up Leonard McCoy’s communicator. His voice even showed his authority as he ordered, “Find out how this thing works.” A few men got straight to work on it. Tepo was one. Twenty years later, Tepo was dead. He spent the end of his life trying to figure out what that thing did. So, Oxmyx looked to his main man, Krako. Krako was forced to abandon his work when an unexpected mutiny brought him down. It also left him in a wheel chair. Not long after Jojo Krako was dead. Oxmyx was basically alone because age and mutiny brought the, “syndicate” down. This lead to Oxmyx forgetting The Book, and devoting the end of his life to figuring out how it worked, and he did. Oxmyx told the story quickly. He asked Bill for books to be given to the new generation of Iotians. At the moment Bill agreed to help since these people now had Federation tech secrets, Bella Oxmyx passed away. Bill went to his son, Johnny Oxmyx, and said, “Since your generation runs this place now, I’ll hail Starfleet Command, and see if I can get you in the Federation, get you a piece of the action.” Captain’s log: Stardate 2027.205: It worked. Sigma Iotia II is a member of the United Federation of Planets. At least they didn’t demand a piece of our action. The worked, and requested and we complied. I even had a plaque made to commemorate the men who spent so long devoting themselves to their work. Perhaps, someday, if we can make time travel safe, we can save them some trouble. Kirk out. THE END (Donald Arnold is a member of the Hephaestus and has written many Star Trek fan fiction. If you have any fan fiction you would like to submit then send me your stories at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net) USS HEPHAESTUS

Star Trek News Reading Rainbow Do you remember Reading Rainbow on PBS? LeVar Burton (Geordi LeForge on ST:TNG) was the host and now he is started a Kickstarter program to bring Reading Rainbow into today’s market. Two years age Mr. Burton and his group developed Reading Rainbow into an app for tablets. The Kickstarter program is to 1. Develop a web enabled Reading Rainbow program for the home, 2. Develop a classroom version with materials to help teachers, and 3. Subsudize cost so that schools in need can get the program for free. At first he wanted to raise $1 million dollars which would reach 1,500 classrooms. When he reached that goal in 24 hours he expanded it to $5 million dollars so that he could reach 7500 classrooms. He is hopping to raise the 5 million dollars by July 2. If you wish to help then you can go here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/readingrainbow/bring-reading-rainbow-back-for-every-child-everywh (www.Startrek.com, www.kickstarter.com)
Star Trek 3 Release Date Were you not sure what you wanted to do for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek? Well now you don’t have to worry because Paramount has said they have scheduled the release of Star Trek 3 for 2016. We can party at the movie theaters. So get your uniforms pressed, your boots polished and yours ears pointed. We should have a good celebration. (various star trek sources)
Sir Patrick Stewart on Twitter Sir Patrick Stewart is on twitter. Sir Stewart uses twitter with his “own sense of fun” to show he is more than the serious characters he plays. He said he tiptoed at first being cautious of the things he said. The fun that Sir Stewart has had on Twitter has lead to a role on a new comedy series by Seth MacFarlane. Also Twitter has allowed Sir Stewart to bring support to causes dear to his heart like Amnesty International and Shelter. Sir Stewart says, “[Twitter] led me to understand the potential for social interaction and social change.” (www.treknews.net) (Did I miss something? You have an interesting news item from Star Trek? Reviews The Wil Wheaton Project (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) The Wil Wheaton Project is a half hour show on ScyFy. It airs Tuesday at 8PM (CST). The program is Wil Wheaton giving his opinions on TV shows, movies, games and other Science Fiction/Horror related subjects. The show goes in a sort of rapid fire discourse since Wil has several things to talk about and a short time to cover them. Mr. Wheaton, I think, is very entertaining but this show does not use his gifts as well as it should. If ScyFy would expand it to an hour and have Wil give more detail on what he covers it would be better.
RATING: Aaaaa Maleficent (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) I am a big Disney fan and have always liked the evil fairy Maleficent since she can change into a dragon. This movie changes things somewhat from the story we know. I like Angelina Jolie as the character because she did a good job in portraying Maleficent as one you need to care about. They gave you a reason to see her in a different light than she was portrayed in Sleeping Beauty. The problem is (spoiler) they had to make someone else evil. This part did not sit well with me. Other than this problem the movie had great visual effects and did some great character development. I would say go see it but it also can be one that you can wait for it on DVD.
RATING: AAAaa (Did I miss something? You have an interesting movie or TV show you would like to review or be reviewed? Then send me your suggestions and articles to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net)
