INSIDE THIS ISSUE

HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Memorial Day is just around the corner and all too soon for me spring will be over. Concerning ship’s business, I have several items. First, congratulations to all of you (officers and crew) for the awards our ship received at this year’s Summit. And I want to give a special shout- out to Neil Yawn for those he received. If you didn’t attend the Summit, check our captain’s report in the April Anvil. Last, the Captain’s Cookout is coming up. It usually is in July and is lots of fun. There will be activities for the kids, games for the adults, and lots of good food. Just bring what you want to cook on the grill; drinks and snacks are furnished. Well, that’s all this month. See you next time. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net

Theme Article: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Star Trek: Deep Space Nine(DS9) premiered on January 3, 1993 . The show ran for 7 seasons with a total of 173 episodes. The show was a spin off of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG). It ran concurrent with TNG from January 1993 till TNG last episode in May of 1994. It also ran concurrent with Star Trek: Voyager (Voy) from January of 1995 till DS9 last episode in June of 1999. It was only on its own for the fall of 1994. The show was conceived by Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Gene Roddenberry knew of the program but was not involved as he was too ill by the time Mr. Berman and Mr. Piller had a working concept. Mr. Berman’s idea was to have a program that was more like the Rifleman or Gunsmoke rather than Gene Roddenberry’s concept of Wagon Train to the Stars. If you look at the concept then the characters would be Sisko as the town Mayor, Kira as the local Native American, Bashir as the country Doctor, Odo the lawman, Quark as the local Barkeep and Miles O’Brien the everyman married to the local school Marm. From this description I get a better understanding of the show than when I watched it. I liked the show when it was on but always felt it wasn’t Star Trek. I think this came about as Rick Berman did not believe in the utopian society that Mr. Roddenberry did. Mr. Berman thought that all shows should involve conflict to have a story. Star Trek did have conflict but it was the crew of the Enterprise helping a group of people see how not to have a conflict that United Federation of Planets solved ages ago. DS9 had Starfleet crew who had conflicts with Starfleet, each other and with what they had to do. Sisko’s conflict was dealing with his wife’s death at the hands of the Borg and being assigned to a location where the locals (Bajoran) didn’t want the Federation around; Miles O’Brien was having marriage difficulties. These conflicts made the show different but, after looking back, made it more relatable to what we are going through in today’s society. The show had several things going for it. It gave more insight in to the day to day lives of the crew than the previous Star Treks; this might be because Sisko was a father and he had interaction with his son, also, Miles O’Brien’s family was featured in several shows. We saw the Bajorans try to figure out how they wanted to govern themselves even though that sometimes led to armed conflicts. We saw character development by seeing the past of several characters (i.e., Sisko, Kira, Odo and Bashir). We also saw how religion (Bajorans following the Prophets) can be important to people without it being a hindrance to other aspects of progress. Another feature was they had story arcs that Gene Roddenberry didn’t allow when he worked on Star Trek. Star Trek (Classic) and TNG were known for forgetting about something that happened in a previous episode and background characters only appearing once. These arcs made the characters more 3-dimensional than what was in the previous shows. Some of my favorite background characters were Morn, Weyoun and Garak. They popped up in places that made the stories more interesting. Also DS9 made the Ferengi and Lwaxana Troi less of a joke and more real as people.

Star Trek News Grace Lee Whitney,1930-2015 The Hephaestus gives its condolences to family, friends and fans of Grace Lee Whitney. Below is a memorial by a friend of the Hephaestus, Dennis Rayburn, who gave me permission to reprint his memorial for her from the website www.treknewsnetwork.com .

Remembering a Woman of Courage She was a cultural phenomenon. She only appeared in eight episodes of the original “Star Trek,” but she left a lasting impression where, when it was time for the movies to be created, she returned to her so familiar character and took it to the next level. She had a beauty that was enthralled men from 8 to 80, which, to borrow a movie line, “… can put steam in a man’s strides.” But there was more to Grace Lee Whitney, who is being mourned by the collective fans of Star Trek. Deep in her, there was the courage to pick herself up from several life problems with addiction, and other things that happened to her, and turn it into a positive. Her story since the original show is a perfect example of the old saying, “when life hands you a lemon, start making lemonade.” As I said earlier, she only appeared in eight episodes, but those appearances left a major impression in the fans as she was an extremely popular guest at conventions. You can count on two hands with fingers to spare the individuals who have made that kind of lasting impact, but she did. It wasn’t for her looks alone that the fans remember her, but for the way she portrayed Yeoman Janice Rand. She presented Rand as a person who was not only doing her duties as Captain Kirk’s assistant, but actually cared for him. It wasn’t just a job to her. However, Whitney didn’t want to be remembered as just a face on the bridge, and we don’t. We remember the lady who fell into the clutches of alcohol and pills, who by her own admission, just wanted to withdraw from the world and die. She turned from those addictions, and became a recovering addict who devoted her time and efforts not only reaching out to and assisting folks who were suffering as she was, but as an advocate for them and the struggles they face. It was in that pursuit that we all came to know more about the woman, Grace Lee Whitney. She showed us all that she not only possessed an external beauty, but an incredible inner beauty as well. She also showed courage in staying sober for 35 years till her passing a few days ago. For her, the race is over, and the final victory over those addictions has been won. She has crossed the finish line in her race of life, and victory is hers. This is the way her family reports she wants to be remembered and that is how I will remember her. Grace Lee Whitney was a very unique person whose life story has inspired and will continue to inspire people. I pray that someone will rise up who can continue the work she started and the call to action for those who need help she raised. Vaya con Dios, Grace. We will all miss you. See you in the morning! Reviews Avengers: Age of Ultron by: Captain MarkAdam Miller (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) There have been comic book movies for as long as I can remember but they pale to what Marvel is putting out. This can be said as well of their newest movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. It is surprising how they can give all the characters in this movie screen time with out losing the plot or the viewer’s attention. The movie is very action orientated from beginning to end but still has time to give you what the characters are feeling. I especially like when we get to see some of the home life of Hawkeye (Clint Barton) played by Jeremy Renner. Hawkeye has been at the back of both Thor and The Avengers movie but not a major focus like in this movie. They also give a good reason for why Hawkeye is part of the Avengers when all he can do is shoot an arrow. Also we get more back ground on Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) played by Scarlett Johansson. James Spader as the voice of Ultron also makes the movie all the more fun. It is surprising how the voice of someone can set a tone that makes the character more believeable. All the other characters are there; Thor, Ironman, Captain America, Hulk and Director Fury. We also get Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill the only bad casting in this and The Avengers. This is the only thing I have against Joss Whedon. We also get cameos from Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine) and Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/ Falcon) which makes it fun. The cameo by Stan Lee is also a good joke as well. When we lose Mr. Lee I don’t think the Marvel movies will be the same. It is also interesting how the movie stays in continuity with all the others that sometimes can hamper a movie. Given the X-men and Wolverine movies have a few inconsistencies if you delve too hard into them for continuity. The TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. dove tailed nicely into this movie on the Tuesday before and had a follow-up episode that also picked up on things from the movie. I did feel sorry for those watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. if they did not get to see the movie over the weekend before seeing the following Tuesday’s episode.} By being a DC comic fan more than a Marvel fan I do go into the movies without all the background. This can help and hurt. Marvel does a good job of not over explaining who the characterless are which would bore those who do know. But they do give enough that a novice stays interested and wants to know more. I am reading more Marvel now that I have seen these movies and love the characters as much as my Superman and Batman. I wish DC would turn their movie rights over to Marvel so we can get a descent DC movie other than the 3 good ones (Superman(1978), Batman(1989) and Batman Begins(2005)). For now I will enjoy the Marvels movies. When this one comes out on Blu Ray, I will be having a movie marathon from Ironman to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Popcorn anyone? Side note: An elevator will still function with Thor’s hammer inside as the elevator is not really holding the Hammer.

Rating: AAAAA Did I miss something? You have an interesting movie or TV show you would like to review or be reviewed? Then send me your suggestions and articles to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net.

While on an Away Mission We were exploring a planet that was thought to be uninhabited. While exploring we run into a Gorn settlement. Quickly Ambassador Michael Burtyk pulls his Bat’leth out and says “We should be quick and merciless.” I try to look calm as the red shirt, Phillip Mangina, pulling his phasor, comes to stand by me. Phillips says don’t worry Captain I have a personal shield that will protect both of us. Scientist Matt Boyd steps up pulling his tricorder out. Looking at the tricorder, Matt says, “Well I think I know how we can get rid of those Tribbles.” “I have no tribbles”, I scream. “We are going to be Gorns because of the goners, I mean goners because of these Gorns!” Without explanation Matt calls the ship and a litter of Calines are beamed down. Right away the Gorns start fawning over them. Ambassador Burtyk steps up and proceeds to negotiate a truce with the Gorns that includes selling them several Bat’leths as well.
