“I wanted to give the hospital a chance because it took a chance on me,” Dominic has said. Yes, this hospital has taken a chance on many of us. Whether through employment, community improvement, or treating our children, this hospital has affected all of us. And your support makes all that Pleasepossible.enjoythis issue and I hope you are having a great summer.

The real highlight of this issue is, however, an inspiring introduction to Dominic Holliman-Wade. In 2014, Dominic received a postcard adver tising a free job assistance workshop and resume class offered through our award-winning, evidence-based Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families

Ainitiative.part-time salesman at the time, Dominic learned from that class and obtained a challenging and rewarding job in our Big Lots Behavioral Health Service. That initial experience led to additional roles. Today, he is a college graduate and a planning coordinator in the Department of Planning and Business Development.

received several job opportunities within four weeks of attending the workshop. His first role, as constant attendant in the Big Lots Behavioral Health Services at Nationwide Children’s Hospital was the beginning of his journey at Nationwide Children’s, where he sought more opportunities to affect change within his community and in the lives of others. In 2020, while in graduate school and working as popu lation outreach coordinator through Partners For Kids,

“Nationwide Children’s has given me a platform to continue learning and growing. Every role I’ve held not only fit my career goals but also my values… I can see myself here for years to come.”

“Nothing can beat the feeling of satisfaction when you know your work brings about positive change.”

“The engagement was great be cause they were genuinely invested in the community and in seeing community participants leave with something valuable,” Dominic Dominicsays.

The postcard from HNHF is how Dominic’s journey began. His initiative and drive continue to take him further. He has been given a space to thrive in, to learn who he is, take on new careers, and discover unique ways to impact patients and their families.

Dominic received a scholarship to participate in the Disparities Leadership Program (DLP). DLP is a yearlong, hands-on education program focused on helping health care leaders achieve equity in healthcare. The coronavirus pandemic intensified language access issues in health care – Domonic’s research identified solutions to prevent risk of COVID-19 transmission in underrepresented minority populations.

Where Are They Now?

Holliman-Wade returned to his hometown of Columbus to expand his career opportu nities. He received a job readiness postcard from Nationwide Children’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Fami lies (HNHF), advertising a job assistance and resumé workshop. Dominic recalls the experience as a unique one. The workshop gave the surrounding com munity direct access to Nationwide Children’s human resources profes sionals eager to offer their expertise one-on-one.

In January 2022, Dominic’s career aspirations rose to newer heights. As a planning consultant within the Department of Planning and Business Develop ment, he leads and coordinates construction projects from beginning to end, utilizing strategic planning skills he learned years prior. Every role has been a step up to serve the community. The constant attendant role gave him access into the professional world of healthcare, patient care allowed him to understand the interworking of his administrative duties, and now Dominic’s current role enables him to see how non-clinical roles help patients and families receive the best care possible.

The program provides experiences to students from diverse backgrounds, with focus on underrepresented minority students from economically disadvantaged and underserved communities and/or first-generation students. Students must have com pleted at least two years of full-time college-level education to qualify. We’re proud to have welcomed students from Bethune-Cookman University, Howard University, Tennessee State University, Capital University, and a number of other colleges from across the country. We know that this experience can play a formative role in a student’s future, and look forward to following their work for years to come.

According to census data, the U.S. population is projected to become a majority-minority in 2045. The need to prepare and train healthcare profes sionals who are culturally responsive and equipped to provide quality care in a multicultural society is quickly expanding. Only about 9% of current physicians identify as Black or African American, Native American or Alaska Native, or Hispanic or Latino accord

and more evidence is coming to light, showing just how important it can be to have a doctor who is from the same racial or ethnic background as their pa tients. The interactions go better, with patients seeming to be more willing to discuss their symptoms and pains with a doctor who looks like them. Impor tantly, medication adherence rates go up. At Nationwide Children’s, our goal is do what’s best for every patient that walks through our doors. To do so, we’ll need a workforce that represents, that looks like those very same patients.

attendance to make sure they’re getting the health care they require. We realize that, for one reason or another, many chil dren don’t make it to all of their recommended check-ups. By working with school systems, we can ensure that fewer kids fall through the cracks and get the care they need. For instance, our Diabetes and School Health (DASH) program sees diabetic chil dren at their school, helping them measure their glucose levels, and providing them with the medication and support they need. Our new strategic plan also calls for Nationwide Children’s to further invest in Partners For Kids (PFK), our impactful accountable care organization. Alongside its partners, PFK supports the highest quality care for almost all children served by Medicaid in more than half of Ohio counties, while also sharing best practices with pediatric providers across the state. We will also continue to support and grow our Pediatric Vital Signs pro gram, an initiative to measure the wellbeing of all children in its community across eight metrics, with the goal of determining what is working and expanding the initiative as a national model for pediatric care.

It’s the perfect time to be reminded of the importance of creating or updating your will and estate plan.

• Many assets can be transferred outside of your will.

Despite the importance of having a will, recent studies show that nearly half of all Americans never get around to drafting it. A common misconception is that planning for the future is a lengthy, complicated process. Creating a plan is less about form and procedure and more about considering all the people and causes that are important to you. The reality is more like this:
