Welcome

Damir Bajs, Croatian Minister of Tourism

'Discover the magic and diversity of our country'

Distinguished readers, dear tourists, First and foremost, I am pleased that you have this magazine in your hand because it means that you have chosen Croatia as your holiday destination. I hope that some of the following will reassure you that you have made the right decision. Last season, Croatia was among the most successful tourism countries in the Mediterranean, with a focus on diversity of options as well as authenticity in an environment of global competition. We hope to continue this positive trend during this season to which I welcome you all warmly. This will be another challenging year but I am confident that we will again be as prominent in the world tourism market. This confidence is reinforced by the recent recognition by the European Tour Operators Association of Croatia as the recommended destination for the year 2011/2012. Thus Croatian tourism is this year building on its achievement of 2010 when it doubled the results of its Mediterranean competitors. We have already successfully implemented the Action Plan for Croatian Tourism for this year together with a series of additional activities which should ensure an even greater number of

visitors reaching Croatia. An important part of our effort has always focussed on improving the safety for you, our guests, so that Croatian destinations feel as carefree and relaxed as possible. Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism strongly supports the promotion of Croatian tourism through gastronomy and wine. A special Ordinance has been created establishing a specified standard called the "Croatian Autochthonous Cuisine" which identifies Croatian cuisine and restaurants as important elements in our tourism. However along with all these assets, our country is blessed with a rich cultural heritage, extraordinary beauty and preservation of nature. Together with safety, these advantages are regularly quoted in the top ranks of attractions listed by our tourists themselves. In this issue of Tourist News we will bring you their views, and a concise description of each Croatian region. I hope you will find the information in these pages helpful on your journey through Croatia, and that you will discover the magic and diversity of our country where we will be eagerly looking forward to seeing you again. The Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Croatia Damir Bajs

Croatian tourist region / Slavonia

Visitors guide

GOLDEN VALLEY Croatian mythical destination Shaped by the force of the rivers Drava, Danube, Sava and Ilova, Slavonia is a mythical region that has guarded its treasures for centuries. It is characterised by the wide, endless expanse of the golden Pannonian plains and rivers sustaining wetlands. Having become a part of the Roman Empire in the first centuries AD, boasting two major roads - one leading from Osijek (today the capital of Slavonia and cultural, educational, economic and sports centre of the region) to the eastern provinces and the other linking the Aque Balissae (today known as Daruvar) with the fertile agricultural and winegrowing country around today’s Požega, Đakovo and Vinkovci, Slavonia gave two Roman emperors - the eminently capable and courageous Valentinian and his brother Valens.Treasuring the area as both wheat growing and winegrowing country (the Kutjevo winegrowing district is home to one of the oldest wine cellars in Europe) the Romans named it Vallis Aurea (Golden Valley). This is a place where people have a deep respect for Mother Earth and whose faces reflect the pride they take in their Slavonian origins. Waste no time; set off down the roads that will take you past medieval fortifications, monasteries, Baroque castles and the manor houses of Osijek,Vinkovci, Požega, Slavonski Brod, all the way to Vukovar, Ilok and Đakovo.
