Globally Integrated Students An International Campus Community Chancellor’s Study Abroad Scholarship: Spring 2014 The Chancellor has dedicated $25,000 to fund study abroad this spring! The idea is for this fund to support as many students as possible for study abroad and increase diversity among study abroad participation. Ten or more scholarships of $2,000 to $2,500 w i l l b e a w a r d e d t o s t u d e n t s f r o m underrepresented groups who describe in their scholarship applications a clear plan for how, after returning from their international experience, they will reach out to other students who are less likely to study abroad, and help support goals to increase the racial/ ethnic, gender, and academic diversity of study abroad participants. Preference is given to students with high financial need, to first-‐‑ generation college students, and to those who have limited or no previous experience abroad. Award recipients will be required to report to the Chancellor about their international experience, make presentations in multiple seYings, and be willing to participate in videotaped interviews.

Any student thinking of studying abroad during any of the following terms: Spring 2014, Academic Year 2014-‐‑2015, Summer 2014, Fall 2014 are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students do not need to have a completed study abroad application to apply for scholarships but are encouraged to begin the process. Students interested in learning more about studying abroad are encouraged to follow the steps outlined here. The scholarship deadline is January 24 and you can find more information about applying here. Our process allows students to apply to multiple scholarships.

Peace Corps Campus Recruiter Serves NC State Lindsey Brantley is a 2010 NC State graduate in Biology and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru from 2011-‐‑2013. As the NC State Campus Recruiter, she works with students and non-‐‑NC State individuals interested in joining the Peace Corps. I sat down with Lindsey to talk about her experience and to learn more about the services offered on campus for people interested in making a difference around the world. What are the main benefits of joining the Peace Corps? A beYer cultural awareness. I never would have known that people still live like that. We cooked with rocks on the floor with firewood inside our house. It was incredibly eye-‐‑opening just to have that experience and to be able to live like that, not just for a week, but for two years. There are very few people who can go somewhere and live in a place where you have to break cultural boundaries. The work we do may seem really basic, but it’s... Read More.

Global Health Initiative to Host Dr. Silvia Cu January 23rd Dr. Silvia Cu is a rural public health doctor, visiting us all the way from the Lake Atitlan region of Guatemala. She serves as the health care provider for the Guatemala program students, and she also acts as the service-‐‑learning placement for students interested in health care. She will be presenting on her journey to her current career, as well as on her work within healthcare, and with the health disparities, of the indigenous populations of Guatemala. She will also touch upon opportunities students have within Guatemala, and hopes to reach out to faculty who are interested in her experiences, and perspective, working with students as their physician.
