Internationalization Celebrated Accolades for NC State 2014-2015 Seed Grant Recipients Announced The CommiWee on International Programs reviewed 25 proposals and selected six of those to receive Internationalization Seed Grant funding up to $5,000 each. The aim of the funding program is to provide grants that will improve the range of international partnerships by NC State faculty and staff to foster meaningful, collaborative, global scholarship and engagement. Congratulations to this year ’s seed grant recipients!
Analysis: GTI program participants contribute more than $12 million to NC State The Global Training Initiative released an e c o n o m i c i m p a c t r e p o r t d e t a i l i n g t h e contributions brought to NC State from students participating in programs coordinated by their office. NC State Wins Award for Excellence in Internationalization NAFSA: Association of International Educators recently announced the recipients of the 2014 Senator Paul Simon Award. NC State received t h e S i m o n Awa r d f o r C o m p r e h e n s i ve I n t e r n a t i o n a l i z a t i o n , w h i c h r e c o g n i z e s universities that are making significant progress towards university-‐‑wide internationalization. The prestigious honor is bestowed upon only four institutions each year. NC State’s nomination recognized the significance of strategic planning and leadership, global partnerships, curriculum integration, innovative programmatic efforts as well as campus-‐‑wide collaboration. Winners will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in November, and profiled in the 2014 edition of Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities. Faculty & Staff Global Engagement Opportunities for International Involvement OIA Hosts Reception for Visiting International Scholars More than 330 visiting international scholars from over 30 countries around the world currently call NC State home. NC State often hosts over 650 visiting international scholars from over 60 different countries each year across all 10 colleges. Visiting scholars benefit the entire campus by bringing a global perspective to our research labs, classrooms and community.
3rd Round of UGPN Research Collaboration Fund Coming Soon The University Global Partnership Network will announce the 3rd round of funding this week. NC State faculty are invited to submit proposals in collaboration with the University of Surrey and/or the University of Sao Paulo. Click here for the funding announcement.
The Office of International Affairs hosted a reception on March 4th to celebrate and honor this unique population in Witherspoon Student Center. Current faculty spoke on the benefits of hosting visiting scholars, while visiting scholars spoke on their experiences while here at NC State. Scholars and faculty alike were able to network over the course of dinner and had a chance to taste beer brewed by NC State’s own brewery.
Global Engagement Exposition & Call for Posters The Global Engagement Exposition will feature achievements in international research, teaching/ scholarship, extension, engagement and economic development at NC State University. Faculty, staff, and students engaged in international research, teaching, extension and/or engagement are welcome to showcase global projects via poster presentations. An easel and mounting board (54"ʺ X 42"ʺ) will be provided for presenters and the deadline for the poster presentation proposal is Friday, April 4 at 5pm. The event will be held on April 10 from 11:30 to 1:30 at the University Club. It is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided. 9th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium University-Wide Student Engagement Website Launched The Division of Academic and Student Affairs and the Office of International Affairs announce the launch of the new website, studentengagement.ncsu.edu. The site is focused on educating students about high impact opportunities at NC State. High impact practices such as service-‐‑ learning, study abroad and undergraduate research are highlighted on the new site to encourage all NC State students to participate in activities proven to have a positive impact on student success. We invite you to check out the new website and share with your students and colleagues. The 9th Annual NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium will be held in the Jane S. McKimmon Center on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. The poster session will be from 1:30 to 4:00. This year, there will be 200 poster presentations representing research being conducted in 53 graduate programs from all colleges. This event is co-‐‑sponsored and organized by the NC State University Graduate Student Association (UGSA) and the Graduate School. Additional information may be found here.
Chinese New Year Valentine Event Draws Crowd on the Brickyard After rescheduling due to winter weather, the Confucius Institute held its Chinese New Year Valentine’s Day event in the brickyard Feb. 20th, drawing a crowd of over 3,000. Students, faculty and staff had a chance to practice writing calligraphy, dress as Chinese rulers, and make Valentine’s cards. Over the course of the day they were able greet the NC State mounted police officer to celebrate the Year of the Horse and take a picture with Confucius Institute’s panda mascot, known as “Bao Bao.”

Japan Center to Host Art Exhibit and Artist Reception
SPIA Presents: “Crisis at the Hague” The School of Public & International Affairs will host Jelena Subotic on Thursday, March 20th at 6pm in Park Shops 200 as part of the SPIA Visiting Young Scholars Lecture Series. Dr. Subotic’s talk is called “Crisis at the Hague: What has gone wrong with international war crimes trials?” Dr. Subotic is an Associate Professor of Po l i t i c a l S c i e n c e a t G e o r g i a S t a t e University who works on international relations theory, human rights, transitional justice, identity politics, and the Balkans. Faculty, staff and students are invited to join the lecture on March 20th.

NC Japan Center will hold an art exhibit from April 1 through June 13th. This exhibit will showcase 21 pieces of art work created by Ms. Junko Yamada, an artist residing in New York City. You will have an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful “Harie” collages depicting Japanese traditional culture and sceneries from sweet old Japan by using a variety of paper. A reception with Ms. Yamada will be held between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday, April 12th. Everyone is invited, free of charge. Egyptian Student Association to Showcase Culture The NC State Chapter of the Egyptian Student Association in North America and the Office of International Services invite you to experience Egypt in the Caldwell Lounge on Thursday, March 27th from noon to 2pm. AWendees will be able to learn about the culture and experience what makes the country unique directly from international students with firsthand knowledge at this free event.
