New Global Initiatives NC State Joins Generation Study Abroad Campaign NC State has joined the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad national initiative to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade, #GenerationStudyAbroad. NC State has committed to growing its study abroad participation by 50% by 2019. NC State will seek $1 million in new endowment funds for study abroad scholarships among other strategies. Read more.

GTI & IEP Welcome Saudi Students The Global Training Initiative (GTI) and Intensive English Program (IEP) host a foundation year program for students participating in the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) for the first time this year. KGSP is administered by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is a fully funded scholarship for undergraduate Saudis studying science and engineering. This year, GTI and IEP welcome 15 Saudi students who will be participating in the inaugural Foundation Year Program at NC State, which aims to 2

help get them involved with American culture and life and to prepare them for academic study in the United States. The first semester is primarily focused on helping them gain admission to institutions of higher education in the U.S. which includes intensive SAT and TOEFL preparation alongside English writing and Pre-Calculus courses. A class on American Culture and History is also included. The spring semester will deepen their understanding of the American academic culture by continuing Academic English and American Culture courses while adding Calculus, Science, and C++. NC State is one of six universities hosting the KGSP program all over the nation. NC State currently enrolls 11 undergraduate Saudi students who participated in KGSP Foundation years at other universities. Read more about KAUST.

OIA Hosts International Zone at Packapalooza The 3rd annual Packpalooza event was held on August 23rd. Approximately 55,000 people came to Hillsborough St. to celebrate a new year and all things NC State. The International Zone was moved to the area in front of DH Hill Library this year and was a huge success. The zone kicked off with the Parade of Flags, quickly becoming a new Packapalooza tradition. Over 80 flags were carried by international students representing their home countries or domestic students with an affinity for particular countries. The parade followed the university’s Pipes and Drums band and walked down Hillsborough Street to the Belltower to showcase the culturally diverse student population at NC State. Back in the International Zone, 15 international student, university, and community organizations were on hand all day to showcase different cultures with interactive and engaging activities. Event attendees enjoyed henna 3

tattoos, trying on traditional clothing, Chinese calligraphy, hand drums, games, and dancing among others. Four food trucks were also stationed at the International Zone all day offering flavors and foods ranging from hibachi to vietnamese to Jamaican chicken. Crowds gathered around the International Zone throughout the festival and no doubt enjoyed experiencing global cultures right here on campus. View the International Zone photo album.

GTI Programs Impact Totals More than $21 Million Since the Global Training Initiative (GTI) was launched in 2007, its student and professional programs has added at least $21.5 million to the university and the local economy. The GTI at NC State University expands and enhances international partnerships for NC State students and faculty, as well as citizens of North Carolina, through short-term programs. Read More.
