BRINGING CONSUMERS CLOSER TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES: THE MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW 2023

consumers are actively contributing to the preservation of the environment and the construction of a cleaner and more habitable future for generations to come.

Although the first experiments in electricity and mobility date back to the 19th century, the electric car revolution gained significant momentum in the 21st century. It was during this period that technological advancements and growing environmental concerns propelled a renewed interest in electric vehicles as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuelpowered ones.

As awareness of environmental impacts and fossil fuel dependency intensified, research into battery technologies and improvements in electric efficiency allowed electric cars to become a viable and attractive option for sustainable mobility. Leading automotive companies began launching innovative electric models, triggering a transformation in the industry and a shift towards a cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation future.

Electric vehicles

Opting for electric vehicles has emerged as a significant milestone in the fight against climate change. These vehicles, free from direct exhaust emissions and with a notably lower carbon footprint compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, play a fundamental role in reducing air pollution and mitigating the effects of global warming. By adopting electric propulsion technologies,

However, despite advances in electric vehicle adoption, significant challenges related to charging infrastructure and safety persist. The lack of a sufficiently dense and accessible network of public chargers can limit the convenience and user confidence in transitioning to electric mobility. Additionally, growing concerns about public charger vandalism raise security issues that must be addressed to ensure a conducive environment for the continued growth of this mobility revolution.

For this reason, seven prominent automakers have forged an alliance with the aim of establishing a joint venture that will revolutionize electric vehicle charging infrastructure in North America. Among these firms are General Motors, BMW Group, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, MercedesBenz, and Stellantis, who have joined forces to develop an extensive network of fast chargers.

Despite advances and initiatives

In line with the effort to change these perceptions, the Miami International Auto Show 2023, scheduled from September 1st to 10th, emerges as a crucial event to transform consumer mindset.

By displaying a variety of electric models from various brands and showcasing their innovative features, the event seeks to illustrate the positive side and advantages of electric cars, as well as challenge the myths and prejudices surrounding this form of mobility. With a focus on education and hands-on experience, the Miami International Auto Show 2023 aims to catalyze a shift in consumer awareness, driving the adoption and acceptance of electric vehicles as an exciting and responsible option.

South Florida Automobile Dealers Association

To achieve this shift in perspective, the Miami International Auto Show 2023 has devised an innovative strategy that includes showcasing a wide range of models from the most influential brands in the market. Additionally, through a specially designed test track, visitors will be able to test these electric cars in realworld conditions, exploring their performance, comfort, and technology capabilities.

aimed at driving electric vehicles, certain reservations persist among American consumers. These reservations revolve around several fundamental reasons, such as concerns about the lack of charging infrastructure, uncertainty about the reliability of electric vehicles due to their relative novelty in the market, and sometimes a biased perception suggesting that electric cars are inferior to their conventional counterparts.

According to Debra Koebel, President of the South Florida Automobile Dealers Association, “the show’s 2023 focus will mirror that of the industry with a special emphasis on electric vehicles and sustainability.” However, there will also be innovations related to fossil fuel-powered vehicles. This statement highlights the intent to align the Miami International Auto Show 2023 with current trends and priorities in the automotive industry, while also offering a balanced and diverse vision to meet the diverse needs and preferences of consumers.

DISCOVERING THE THRILLING HIGHLIGHTS OF MIAS 2023: AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBRA KOEBEL

“Our show continues to place a strong emphasis on electric vehicles and sustainability with the primary goal of introducing South Floridians to the newest EVs on the market”, said Koebel.

EC: What are the most prominent car brands and manufacturers that will participate in the Miami Auto Show this year?

DK: We expect to have more auto manufacturers exhibiting their newest vehicles at our show than in recent years. Honda, Infiniti, and Lexus should participate in the 2023 show along with a host of other lines. Some of the manufacturers planning major vehicle introductions at the show include Nissan which will exhibit its Nissan Z Nismo for the first time at a U.S. auto show and Jeep which will show-off its new Wrangler.

followed by Florida. Those numbers will only continue to rise in the future.

EC: Do you think that there are still many people who opt for conventional cars and do not pay much attention to the new electric cars?

We had an exclusive interview with Debra Koebel, the president of the South Florida Automobile Dealers Association, who answered some questions about the exciting new features coming to the Miami International Auto Show 2023. With her vast expertise and knowledge in the automotive industry, she shed light on the captivating and innovative elements that will be featured at the event.

Electric Cars: What is the Miami Auto Show going to bring us back in this year’s version?

Debra Koebel: Returning in 2023 is the “MIAS EV Test Track” which made its debut last year to large and enthusiastic crowds. Our show continues to place a strong emphasis on electric vehicles and sustainability with the primary goal of introducing South Floridians to the newest EVs on the market. Among the lines we expect to be represented on the MIAS EV Test Track this year are Cadillac, Nissan, Ford, Hummer, Volkswagen, Rivian, and Polestar. We are thrilled that Hyundai’s indoor EV Test Track, “It’s Your Journey Course,” will return and feature their popular IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models.

EC: What kind of activities and interactive experiences will the Miami Auto Show offer attendees to get up close and personal with the latest automotive models and technologies?

DK: Several auto manufacturers will again be hosting Ride & Drives just outside the entrance to the show, encouraging attendees to get behind the wheel of their newest vehicles. Product specialists at each of the exhibits share valuable information on vehicle safety and technologies to better prepare our attendees for their car buying decisions.

We are pleased that such crowdpleasing exhibits as Memory Lane, South Florida Rides, and Car Boutique will again entertain attendees visiting the show.

EC: How do you think people have taken the issue of electric cars today?

DK: Based on the long lines to ride in an electric vehicle at our test tracks last year, I think people are very curious about what the EV revolution is all about and are looking to our show to better educate them on the benefits of owning an electric vehicle. As of December 2021, about 2.3 million electric cars were on U.S. roads with the greatest number in California

DK: Since we are still in the transition and learning phase, many auto buyers are opting for conventional cars. As the auto industry educates consumers on the new technologies associated with hybrids and EVs, we anticipate the number of EV users will continue to rise each year. In 2023, EV sales are expected to account for 6.5 percent of the U.S. auto market while conventional autos will make up the difference.

EC: How could the Miami Auto Show contribute to promoting greater awareness of sustainable mobility and the benefits of electric vehicles?

DK: The Miami International Auto Show is considered one of the longest lasting signature events in South Florida. For over 50 years, the show has managed to give back to its community whether through its on-going philanthropic program benefiting so many local charities or public service campaigns such as “Don’t Booze and Cruise” a few years ago. When it unveiled its EV Test Track in 2022, the show made a commitment to better educate First Responders from Miami Dade and Broward counties on how best to diffuse a dangerous situation when an EV is involved in an accident on South Florida’s roadways. It organized and hosted a First Responders Forum where well-informed automotive representatives were invited to offer valuable information on safety. More than 250 area First Responders attended last year’s First Responders Forum, and another is scheduled in conjunction with the 2023 Auto Show.

About four-in-ten Americans (38%) say they’re very or somewhat likely to seriously consider an electric vehicle (EV) for their next vehicle purchase, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.

Half of U.S. adults say they are not too or not at all likely to consider purchasing an EV, while another 13% say they do not plan to purchase a vehicle. The share of the public interested in purchasing an EV is down 4 percentage points from May 2022.

Over the past year, the Biden administration has announced a range of measures aimed at increasing EV adoption, including tax credits for EV buyers and emissions limits for car manufacturers. Major automakers are increasing EV production, and electric vehicles’ share of all new U.S. car sales rose sharply over the past two years, to 8.5%.

Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, younger adults, and people living in urban areas are among the most likely to say they would consider purchasing an EV. The 9% of U.S. adults who currently own a hybrid or electric vehicle are also particularly likely to consider an EV for their next purchase. A majority of this group (68%) says they are very or somewhat likely to seriously consider it.

Among those who would consider purchasing an EV, about seven-in-ten say helping the environment (72%) and saving money on gas (70%) are major reasons why. A small share (12%) cite keeping up with the latest trends in vehicles as a major reason.

Lately, there has been a growing interest among individuals in taking care of the environment, particularly when

HOW AMERICANS VIEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Major automakers are increasing EV production, and electric vehicles’ share of all new U.S. car sales rose sharply over the past two years, to 8.5%.

compared to previous years when this concern did not resonate as strongly among Americans in terms of their desire to protect the environment and the planet.

Expectations for future electric vehicle infrastructure

One potential obstacle to greater EV adoption is the availability of public charging stations.

Currently, most EV owners charge their vehicles at home. Some who have used public chargers find that they are unreliable or limited in number. In September 2022, the Biden administration set aside $5 billion to create a network of EV charging stations.

Americans express limited confidence that the country will build the necessary infrastructure to support large numbers of EVs on the roads. Some 17% say they are extremely or very confident this will happen, while 30% are somewhat confident. And 53% are not too or not at all confident.

Republicans and GOP leaners are especially likely to doubt that the U.S. will build the charging stations and infrastructure needed to support EVs: 74% say they have not too much or no confidence at all in this. By comparison, 34% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say the same.

Americans who are confident the country will build the necessary infrastructure are more likely than others to say they would consider purchasing an EV.

Among those who are extremely or very confident that the U.S. will build the infrastructure needed to support EVs,

68% say they would be at least somewhat likely to consider purchasing an EV.

Just 19% of those who are not too or not at all confident in future EV infrastructure say they are at least somewhat likely to consider purchasing an EV.

Views on phasing out gasoline cars and trucks

Accelerating the transition to EVs is a central part of President Joe Biden’s climate agenda. The administration has proposed new emission limits for automakers that would reduce the number of gas-powered cars and trucks they could sell. Some states have gone further, with plans to ban new gas-powered car sales by 2035.

However, the idea of phasing out the production of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035 faces more public opposition than support. About six-in-ten Americans (59%) say they oppose this, while 40% favor it.

The share of Americans who favor phasing out gas-powered vehicles has declined 7 points since 2021. Support is down among both Democrats and Republicans.

Currently, a majority of Democrats (64%) favor phasing out production of gas-powered vehicles by 2035, but 84% of Republicans oppose this.

Partisans also have different emotional reactions to the idea of ending gaspowered vehicle production. A clear majority of Republicans (73%) say they would feel upset about it, but views among Democrats are more mixed. Some 37% say they would feel excited, while 43% would feel neutral and 20% would be upset.

It has two sunroofs at the top, one fullsize and a smaller one at the rear, with its own power sunshade. The rear side door windows also house power sunshades, and there’s another for the rear window, which the driver or rear passengers can deploy.

The people in the back seat have plenty of controls on a folding armrest that features its own digital control screen for heated and cooled rear seats, radio, and climate controls. That’s right, both the front and rear seats are heated and cooled and if you manage this, they will give you an invigorating massage, which is good for comfort and keeping the driver awake on a long drive.

“Like Telluride, EV9 has the potential to be another ‘game changer’ for Kia,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO of Kia

North America and Kia America. “This will be the most sophisticated vehicle we have ever built and it will stand out in the EV market and on the road. Best of all, it will be assembled in West Point, Georgia.”

Kia’s vision extends further, seeking to establish itself as the driving force behind large 7-passenger SUVs. Through the combination of sophisticated design, unparalleled comfort and exceptional capabilities, Kia aspires to be the name of reference in the family SUV segment, standing out not only for its size and space, but also for its unmatched quality and its commitment to customer satisfaction.

The upcoming launch of the EV9 reflects Kia’s ambitious quest to perfect its winning formula in the field of family electric vehicles. Building on the accolades already won by the successful Kia Telluride and EV6 models, the brand is embarking on an exciting venture to merge the best of both worlds in the new EV9.

This strategic combination is intended to create a family vehicle that capitalizes on the lessons learned from its previous experiences with these two leading models. By extracting the salient qualities of each, Kia aims to produce a next-generation electric SUV that not only evolves in terms of efficiency and technology, but also maintains its customers’ trust in the brand, while continuing to forge new paths in the innovation of electric SUVs.

WHAT IS BEING DONE TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES IN EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

Nowadays, the growing popularity of electric vehicles and the increasing number of brands offering electric models highlight the importance of having nearby and accessible charging infrastructure. As more people embrace sustainable mobility, ensuring the availability of convenient charging points close to homes and workplaces becomes essential. This not only promotes sustainability but also provides convenience and confidence to drivers committed to a future of clean and environmentally friendly transportation.

Despite the surging interest in electric vehicles, the current public charging infrastructure in the United States remains inadequate compared to the number of electric cars on the roads. Insufficiently distributed charging points significantly limit the use of electric vehicles, raising concerns about their range and practicality, potentially deterring prospective buyers interested in sustainable mobility. To boost electric vehicle adoption and enhance the user experience, substantial investments in expanding the public charging network are imperative, alongside active promotion of its accessibility nationwide.

In addition to the infrastructure challenges, there is a concerning increase in failed charging attempts at public stations. According to J.D. Power’s Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study, the rate of failed charging attempts rose from 15% in the first quarter of 2021 to over 21% in the third quarter of 2022. Nearly 39% of charging visits were unsuccessful last year, with reasons including out-of-service chargers, software issues, payment processing errors, and vandalism.

30,000 chargers in the United States and Canada

Recognizing this issue, seven major automakers are joining forces to establish a joint venture that will build a large network of fast electric vehicle chargers across North America, aiming to make electric vehicles more appealing to consumers. General Motors, BMW Group, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis plan to install at least 30,000 chargers in the United States and Canada.

The first of the new charging stations, a pivotal step in enhancing the electric vehicle charging infrastructure, is set to open next summer. The companies have revealed that the initial roll-out will begin in the United States, marking a significant milestone in their mission to provide convenient and reliable charging options for electric vehicle owners. Subsequently, the expansion will extend to Canada, further contributing to the growth of sustainable mobility across North America.

“GM’s commitment to a fully electric future focuses not only on offering electric vehicles that our customers love but also on investing in charging and working across the industry to make it more accessible,” said GM CEO Mary Barra in a statement. “The better the experience people have, the faster electric vehicle adoption will grow.”

Lack of charging infrastructure

A recent survey by Cox Automotive revealed that around a third of respondents cited the lack of charging infrastructure as the primary reason for not buying an electric vehicle, although that percentage dropped to 40% in 2021. At the same time, the percentage of people considering purchasing an EV increased to over 50%, compared to 38% two years ago.

The new charging stations will be strategically located near major cities and along popular travel routes, equipped with multiple high-power fast chargers that can replenish an electric vehicle’s battery to around 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

To ensure user-friendliness, the chargers will be compatible with each automaker’s respective mobile applications, allowing seamless location and initiation of charging. Furthermore, vehicles from other manufacturers, not just the seven mentioned, will also be able to charge at these stations. The new joint venture will depend on funding from the automakers and federal government grants to construct new electric vehicle chargers.

GM and Mercedes have previously declared their intentions to embrace Tesla’s North American Charging Standard, whereas the other automakers have not made any public statements regarding adopting this standard. As a result, the charging stations developed by the new joint venture will feature both NACS cables and the more commonly used CCS (Combined Charging System) cables, which are utilized by the majority of other electric vehicles.

This new joint venture alone would significantly increase the current number of fast chargers in the U.S., where around 35,000 NACS and CCS chargers currently exist. However, with the expected growth in the number of electric vehicles in the coming years, many more chargers will be required. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that by 2030, when the planned emissions standards announced by the Biden administration would require half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric, approximately 182,000 fast chargers will be needed.
