What’s Up Deputy PM Suggests Blackmailing the EU

“If you sign the association agreement, we’ll set Tymoshenko free.” Those, according to a report in Radio Free Europe, were the words out of First Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovsky’s mouth when pressed by journalists to explain what he meant when he said that domestic legislation could be changed if it becomes a major obstacle in the signing of the association agreement. That sounds like blackmail to us. Of course, we know Ukrainian politicians think that’s quite normal, but someone should tell them it’s not really. But then who knows what goes on in the world of international relations. Surely, however, it’s not good to voice such tactics to the press. To heighten the journalists’ view of Khoroshkovsky’s intelligence levels, a little later, when asked if Ukraine would move closer to Russia if its EU aspirations did not come to fruition, he nodded his head. When asked again, he nodded again. When asked for a third time, he said, “No,” which caused a lot of hilarity. This, our Ukrainian friends, is the sort of person running your country: stupid, arrogant and idiotically naïve of the media age we live in, where every faux pas is known around the world in seconds. The association agreement has been initialled, but it will not be signed by the EU until Ukraine cleans up its act, freeing political prisoners and setting the framework for free and fair elections come October. With people like this in charge, we can only raise our eyes towards the heavens and hope for a miracle.

Money Lost – A Conscience Gained?

The Party of Regions hasn’t been sleeping well. The reason, they claim, is the money Tymoshenko screwed the country out of with the infamous gas deal of 2009. Estimated at an incredible $450 million loss, their issue is that much could have been done with that money (aside from buying cars, airplanes, and houses). Sitting down to count up the hypothetical damage, shoes and socks came off to assist in the process. Party of Regions member, Viktor Korzh, led the scandalous afternoon of calculations, saying, “We could have bought 1,000,125 artificial lens”, for example. Furthermore, 375,000 hand and leg prosthetics or 225,000 wheelchairs could have been purchased. But even more than that, $450 million dollars would have been more than enough for over 22,000 operations on kids with leukaemia, he says. These are all good things. However, we can’t help but wonder when the Party of Regions started caring about the health of the nation so much.

Real Life Barbie Causes a Sensation

Dutch TV Ad Stirs up a Storm

A TV advert from a Dutch power company has infuriated the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, as it claims it depicts Ukrainian women in a bad light. The advert, entitled Keep Him Home, shows a Google Images search for Ukrainian women, and the results providing photos of beautiful scantily-clad girls. Apparently worried about a drop in energy use as Dutch men head here for the football, the company offers a free beer tap to all women who can keep their man at home. The suggestion is that the men are far more likely to want to watch the games from the safety (from the wives’ point of view) of their living rooms if they have beer on tap, and therefore far less likely to be seduced by a Ukrainian girl. The Ukrainian government has slammed the advert, calling it insulting and degrading. All we can say is, try googling Ukrainian women and see what comes up.

Ukrainian model Valeria Lukyanova has become an overnight sensation due to her rather frightening appearance. The 21-year-old has apparently been under the plastic surgeon’s knife many times in pursuit of her dream: to look like a real-life Barbie doll. And surprisingly, she has achieved the desired effect. Not only has her face been reshaped to resemble a doll’s (which it does in a very alarming way) but she’s had ribs removed and her breasts enlarged to give her the hour-glass shape, only ever achievable in plastic or through the use of an airbrush. In fact, we here at the What’s On office were convinced that Valeria’s startling appearance was in fact a hoax, created by an evil Photoshop genius. But on the morning of writing this, we came across a video of her in which she moves and talks just like a real person! Apparently we weren’t the only ones who thought it was some sort of con. So to prove she wasn’t a fake (really?) she released a video in which she demonstrates she’s real (ish). You can watch it here: www.examiner.com/video/valerialukyanova-the-real-life-barbie-girlvideo

Germany Urges Europe to Boycott Ukraine Matches

First came the report in German Tabloid, Bild, in which Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said that the “dictatorship” of Ukraine must not be allowed to use EURO 2012 to prop up its image without reforms. “Visits by ministers and prime ministers are out of the question under the current circumstances,” he was quoted saying. And argued “the Ukrainian government should immediately release Tymoshenko”. A day after this report in Bild, Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine stated, without quoting a source, “If Tymoshenko is not released by the start of EURO 2012, the German footballers will most likely have to play without Angela Merkel in attendance.” While Roettgen is not directly involved in foreign affairs, German Chancellor Angela Merkel most certainly is, and if the statement by Der Speigel comes from a reliable source, this should send a clear warning shot across the bows of the ship the Ukrainian government is currently sailing. What’s interesting in both these reports is the use of language: there’s not a lot of diplomacy in either. This would appear to indicate that European politicians are beginning to realise the current Ukrainian administration doesn’t understand diplomatic talk. It seems they now understand that only direct threats have any chance of working. Will it work? Unlikely, but at least they’re trying to do something about this country’s slide into authoritarianism.

Sakuras in Bloom

The alley of almost 400 sakuras in Kyiv’s Kyoto Park (Desnyansky region) made it into the Guinness Book of World Records on 28 April. Dutch seedlings were planted in September of 2011, and the alley, which is 1.8 kilometres in length, is in full bloom. Kyoto Park was founded back in 1972 as a symbol of friendship between the Japanese metropolis and Kyiv. The trees were planted to celebrate the 40th anniversary since the two became twin cities. The park also boasts Japanese lanterns, a zen garden and a tea house, making it a favourite among locals and foreigners alike.

Art Thieves in the Rada

There’s a swindle afoot: two valuable paintings in Ukrainian government offices have been swapped with fakes! The National Art Museum lent a couple of Mykola Hlushchenko landscapes to the government in 2001. But upon closer inspection, including chemical tests that show both paintings to be replicas, the museum is calling for a criminal investigation. Experts say, “The nature of the luminescence in the zinc white paint layer, and the degree of drying in selected samples means they were paintings created in the 21st century.” And as Hlushchenko died in 1971, it makes for pretty clear evidence. With insurers valuing the two originals at about $144,000, the motive is a no-brainer. The question is who dunnit?

Big Bang

Explosions in Dnipropetrovsk stirred a dozing SBU into action on Friday 27 April, as no intel had even hinted at any possible terrorist attack in the eastern city. “The [first] bomb exploded from a rubbish bin at a tram station,” some sources report, while others claim it was a grenade. Despite different reports, 30 people were ultimately injured after second, third and fourth explosions. Security worked to identify just who might have been behind the attacks. All they have came up with so far are three people, all over the age of 30. Some details regarding the terrorists’ description have been released, such as one was “wearing jeans and a dark-coloured short-sleeved tshirt”, while another had “combed brown hair”. Unfortunately, this could well include almost anyone in any city of any country around the world, and it is unlikely that such accounts will assist in any arrests. The SBU are asking that anyone with information call or email the home office at dopomoga@fregat.com. In the meantime, our dear President has been back to his side of the country showing his softer side. Visiting the children in hospital who were injured from the blasts, he has been captured bestowing them with candies and fruits. He even gave a profound speech, promising that he would get to the bottom of the crimes committed, as well as prevent such crimes in the future. Dnipropetrovsk has become top priority for security forces in the country right now, with trash cans removed and video cameras placed in the street. The president has spoken, and the SBU will be watching.

This Week in History 6 May 1686

The Eternal Peace Treaty between the Russian and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is signed in Moscow. According to the treaty, the Zaporizhian Sich, the Siverian region, the cities of Chernihiv, Starodub, Smolensk and their outskirts are granted to Russia. Poland, on the other hand, retains the right bank of Ukraine.

8 May 1709

Peter I razes the Cossack Sich and the Hetman capital of Baturyn in revenge over the Cossacks for their support of Ivan Mazepa. Moreover, Peter I issues a decree to execute any active Zaporizhian Cossack. The Poltavskiy battle against Mazepa’s army the following month only strengthens the Russian tsar’s position on the international level.

9 May 1945

Nazi Germany capitulates in the Second World War. Their surrender is first acknowledged and accepted in the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of a surrender document late on the evening on 8 May 1945.

8 May 1951

Ivan Drach, a prominent Ukrainian poet and literary critic, publishes his first poem. Drach is known foremost for promoting Ukrainian language, and for proposing quotas for Ukrainian-language broadcasts and tax breaks for Ukrainian publishing.

10 May 2001

Viktor Chernomyrdin, the founder and the first chairman of Gazprom and Prime-Minister of Russia from 1992 – 1998, is appointed Ambassador of Russia to Ukraine. He keeps this position for eight years, until Russian President at the time, Dmitry Medvedev, appoints him presidential adviser in 2009.

Active Kyiv

Kyiv courtyards have been begging for renovation for years. With no more time to wait, Project Mini-Amsterdam was dreamed up, initiated and completed in little more than two weeks. We head over to check it out.

I

f we can’t go to Amsterdam, Amsterdam will come to us. This was the thinking behind the social project launched on 16 April by local residents at Tupoleva 22v. It is the first sign of voluntary municipal change among urban communities in Ukraine to date, and is bound to trigger another, if not dozens more. The chosen courtyard is located not far from Nyvky Metro, miles from the busy city centre. Enquiring as to why this one in particular was elected to receive the facelift, “Kyiv doesn’t consist of its downtown only,” the residents respond in unison. After long days at work, beautiful parks and aesthetically pleasing areas are just as necessary at home as they are in the centre.

The Soviet’s All Gone

Checking in on the area turned mini Amsterdam, the walk includes edifices of dark and uninspiring grey concrete, and it becomes immediately clear how necessary this project is. There are little more than gloomy boxes of buildings screaming for a makeover, and then I turn the corner. Ira Bondarenko, one of the people responsible for the project, notes, “Everybody tends to run away from their neighbourhoods to areas more well known, like Maidan or Khreshchatyk, because letting your hair down in the dull and dirty courtyards of your own little district is, simply put, unpleasant.” That is no longer a problem for the multi-storey apartment at Tupoleva 22v. It is now an object of art itself, with street art, colourful benches and even a hammock hanging between the trees. Taking the team of 50 two weeks to get the job done, they have completely transformed the neighbourhood. Daryna Miroschnychenko, organiser and supervisor of the process, mentions that this area in particular was hugely problematic. “There were tonnes of syringes lying all around, and the kids were playing with them in

16.indb 6

the playgrounds. There was also a terrible amount of rubbish that just needed to be cleaned up.”

Just the Beginning

Amsterdam Comes to Kyiv

6

In addition, the residents, all of whom voluntarily devoted their time, energy and money to the project, cut the parking lot in half to create an environmentally friendly green area, complete with flowerbed. Daryna points to one of the saplings that has recently been planted saying, “These were planted by a resident in this area. He had been watching us hurrying about with all the flowers, and so he donated and planted these birches himself.” As I take a closer look around at all of the volunteers finishing up the painting and planting, I spot a number of kids busy with their own planting. They are burying “secrets” in the soil. Their secrets consist of pictures, decorations and of course a few flowers. With their eyes wide, these children have never seen anything like this before. Continuing my inspection, there are trees with

birds perched on branches painted on walls, which have become as much a part of the scenery as anything else. Miroschnychenko can’t keep from grinning: “I am so happy that we have managed to do all of this. It proves that others can change their environment if they only have the will to do so; I hope we are an example for other districts, other residents.” Becoming a kind of Mecca, Kyiv residents come from all corners of the city to get a closer look at this new Amsterdam-like neighbourhood. This initiative demonstrates how art and ingenuity can be born in just a couple of weeks, and stimulates talk of restoring other areas in the capital. The bleak architectural reminders of our Soviet past need not remain. Kyiv’s face is changing dear friends.

Ukraine Today

2000 Animals 1,800 dogs and 200 cats reside at 186 Chervonopraporna, Pyrohovo. It is one of the biggest animal shelters in Kyiv and surrounding area, and it is only growing. Lucky for its residents, they’ve got Tamara Tarnawska as their warden. She has been fighting the powers that be for years, to give them nothing more than what they deserve: food, shelter, love.

I

have been put in touch with Tamara Tarnawska, former journlist for Radio Liberty and President of SPA-SOS, via Mrs Kateryna Yuschenko. The former first lady has strong ideas about the situation concerning stray animals here in Ukraine and is not afraid to voice them. As a great public figure among many political elites in this country, she stands alone. Meeting Tamara on a chilly afternoon earlier this year, I find out why.

Political Persecution

The drive out to the shelter is a long one. It’s probably one of the reasons they get so few visitors. With its president in tow, however, we’re on our way. Tamara needs little encouragement to spur her on, so in between directions and talk of destitute dogs, I just listen. “We try to save as many animals as possible, especially after this cold winter. But no one comes to adopt, we only get more and more [animals] everyday. We are lucky if 50, maybe less, get adopted throughout the year. But only dogs, no one wants cats.” She tells me to prepare myself for when we arrive: “We have no money and a lot of animals. It is absolutely awful. To make matters worse, it is a constant fight with the authorities. I am often down at parliament and City Hall, fighting. [Leonid] Chernovetsky actually proposed that I become his advisor! I refused. He only wanted to keep me quiet.” As she talks, I get the feeling that this is far more than just a sad story about animals nobody wants. This is a fight against for morality, humanity even. “The Verkhovnna Rada doesn’t understand what animal welfare is. They asked me once, ‘Why do you do all of this?’ I responded, ‘If

you have to ask me that question then there’s no way I can explain it to you.’” While the battle has been one that is steeply uphill, Tarnawska has had support from various politicians along the way, citing both former Presidents Kravchuk and Yuschenko as those in her cheering section. Sadly, neither former President Kuchma nor the current leader want anything to do with her or her cause. “I don’t have a relationship with Yanukovych, and I don’t want one,” she says. “Don’t you think he is part of the solution?” I ask. “No I don’t,” is the response. “I do not believe that a president who likes to hunt and kill for fun would be interested in humane methods of solving the problem of homeless animals. And it’s stupid, because if you support the shelter, and don’t make problems for me, then I help the country and that’s good for everyone.”

International Assistance

Finally, she says, after years of pushing, she received a letter from City Hall on 30 December of last year: the shelter would begin to receive regular financial support to pay for the facility, electricity, food, water, medicine, etc. One hundred thousand hryvnia had been set aside. To date, however, they have only received 6,500 hryvnia. Without money from the State, Tarnawska turned to her international contacts. They alone have been funding the shelter since its inception in 1997. Kronan Zeitung, Austria’s largest newspaper, was one of its biggest sponsors last year, donating several tonnes of food, €1,000 for medicine, and €5,000 for two months of electricity in the middle of a very cold winter. And then there’s the Austria-Ukraine Interparliamentary Group, who donated 32,000hrv. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation has also been extremely supportive. Not only writing letters to the appropriate people, her fund has made substantial financial contributions; the most recent of which was €5,000 this month. But the main sponsors over the past 15 years have been international organisations such as the Naturewatch Foundation UK, Action Tier Germany, Tierhilfswerk Austria, Deutscher Tierschutzbund and Schweizer Tierschutz STS, Switzerland. They have been instrumental in keeping the shelter going throughout the years, as has the moral

As we make our way up side streets and across major intersections, Tamara continues the political theme: “It is thanks to former President Yuschenko that the Law on the Protection of Animals against Cruel Treatment was passed in 2006. It is the first of its kind in Ukraine, and it set a precedent. Unfortunately, the law doesn’t work here.”

Coming Soon A Moment of Grace Light and its Placido Domingo (Spain, tenor), Comeback Sofiyska Ploscha 29 June at 19.00

The Thrilling Duduk

Djivan Gasparyan (Armenia, classical, contemporary), October Palace (Instytutska 1)

28 May at 19.00

For those inexperienced in the magic of Armenian music, let us introduce Djivan Gasparyan and his duduk. Related to the oboe, the duduk is a double reed woodwind instrument, and has been a long-time friend to Gasparyan. Becoming soloist of the Armenian Song and Dance Popular Ensemble as well as the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra in 1948, his talents are far-reaching, to which collaborations with Sting, Lionel Richie and Brian May can attest. The King of the Duduk is headed to the capital, get your tickets now; it’s going to be a truly inspiring performance. Tickets are 150 – 1500hrv. For more information call 279-1582, 278-7492.

Madd Man

DJ Madd (Hungary, dubstep), Status Party Bar (Pobedy Pr 3)

18 May at 23.00

DJ Madd is quite the man, having burst onto the scene a few years ago with some fierce dubstep beats. Throwing the Budapest native a big thumbs up were such luminaries as Mary Anne Hobbs, Skream, Joe Nice and more. His first release, Numbers, blasted off, and he followed up with EP, Better With You, which similarly broke through. Now, packing a trunk-full of tunes, he’s calling in on Kyiv. Support comes from Antria, Mayak, Dabass, Berlin Sky and Edick Snake. Tickets are 60hrv. For more information call 496-1590.

Unbelievable, but true. One of the world’s most prominent tenors, Placido Domingo will be here in Kyiv, sending vibrations all throughout the city and beyond. Alina Orlova (Lithuania, pop), Artists House (Artema 1-5)

29 May at 19.30

Alina Orlova popped up in 2008 with her debut commercial album, Laukinis Suo Dingo (Wild Dingo Dog). The Dog did fabulously, selling out in music stores all over the CIS, despite the flop of her first CD release three years earlier. Whatever the genre, it’s good, and worth not just one but both ears: take a listen. Tickets are 180 – 400hrv. For more information call 272-0547.

Ukraine Culture

Weed B

ecoming more prominent and powerful, the public movement for marijuana does not go quite as far as demanding the legalisation of weed, pot, dope, cannabis, hash, blow, wacky tabacky, ganga – call it what you will. Rather, the movement draws attention to the drug legislation in Ukraine, and promotes a tolerant attitude towards smokers, tokers, potheads, dopeheads, weedies, caners, stoners, and what they smoke – joints, spliffs, doobies, reefers, you get the drill. On the eve of the upcoming march, What’s On gathered a gaggle of midnight smokers. We strung together a few thoughts about future of weed smoking here in Ukraine. Then we went to McDonalds.

Walk

Punishable Pleasures

Living in the suburbs of Kyiv and passing the nearby forest each evening, I can often smell the weed fumes coming from behind thick bushes. The silhouettes of young guys and girls emerging from the forest in high spirits leaves no doubt – these teenagers have been puffing away on marijuana, hiding from the prying eyes of parents and militia. Today, having even a small amount of marijuana in your pocket is punishable by law, while selling just one gram of weed can result in 6-10 years of imprisonment. I deliberately write “can”, because with our Ukrainian militia, most things can be evaded with a little ‘persuasion’. The organisation Objective Reality, which holds the Liberty March every year, makes a rough estimation of the bribe for drug cases as between 1000 to 4000 hryvnia. Other sources give figures from 300hrv for having 1 gram of weed in your pocket, and up to $10,000 – 20,000 if a sizeable stash is found. However, in 2009, Ukrainian legislation made a step towards a tolerate attitude to partakers: planting more than 10 bushes of marijuana is a criminally liable offence, while the weed-grower who has up to 10 plants on his balcony with no intention of selling it, is charged only with administrative liability (meaning a fine and confiscation).

the country. Objective Reality states that each year, nearly 15,000 people are put in prison for having more than 5 grams of weed on them. Recalling my own student years, many of my classmates did smoke hash from time to time, simply because it was interesting to try. A really cool party invariably entailed a puff or two. I doubt this situation has changed much today – the need for furtiveness and secrecy only adds thrill to the whole thing. For many people, marijuana smoking is stubbed out in their youth, for others it becomes a sort of lifestyle, where weed helps to overcome stress or distracts from problems. For some though, the topic is a question of justice. They take part in public actions or, as a guy calling himself Indica (real name Ihor) did, start an informational website, where one can find detailed info on all sorts of drugs including cannabis. He and his colleagues created the website last year, as they were interested in the topic of drugs and the laws surrounding it, and yet could not find objective information. “There are many anti-drug sites that simply aim to frighten people. Others openly advocate being a stoner. Our site www.psyplants.org publishes information ‘as it is’ – we give both the positive and the negative sides of the story and let the reader decide for themselves.”

In May each year, Kyiv life is pumped up by a number of public activities, including Soviet Union fans who celebrate the international day of worker solidarity, those who honour victory over the Nazis and so on. Along with these two Soviettinted festivities, is a puff of fresh air, sort of – it’s the Marijuana Liberty March.

A Word on Weed

It would probably be fair to say marijuana is the most popular light drug in Ukraine. As the whole procedure of planting, producing and smoking is illegal, it is difficult to gauge the approximate amount in circulation within

Hope for Dope?

He himself first sparked up a joint as a school graduate and remembers even now those hours of laughter it provided. Later, Ihor quit smoking weed. For some years though now, living in India where cannabis smoking is a regular thing, he has enjoyed a relaxing spliff from time to time. Another guy who agreed to share his marijuana memories, and wished to remain unnamed, also experimented for the first time as a teenager: “Funnily enough, I did not start smoking actual cigarettes until I was 18, so in that respect you can say that marijuana was a ‘gateway drug’.” Leaving weed as mainly a habit of youth, he does not smoke pot on a daily basis. He does, however, enjoy it from time to time, appreciating the specific mood it brings. “It is some-

On the Sofa With...

Some Real Ukrainians

D

id you know there are 24 regions in Ukraine? And that each of them has its own ambassadorial office here in Kyiv? Claiming to be the biggest and best is the Ivano-Frankivsk Foundation. Even more, their aim is also to fulfil an ambassadorial role as the true representatives of Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Country of Regions

I am met by Deputy Director, Taras Dovganok, and Youth Ambassador and former TV star Vitaliy Gdichinsky, whose father, Bohdan, is Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine and just happens to be a patron of the organisation. Wasting little time to get to the crux of the matter, I come right to the point of their claim: Ivano-Frankivsk residents are the ‘truest’ Ukrainians. Taras takes this up, saying, “It’s true! Once we were even the capital of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic, and I say to anyone who cannot see a difference between Russia and Ukraine – go to IvanoFrankivsk. There, you will hear only Ukrainian spoken. You will eat at traditional Ukrainian restaurants – we have different food to Russia, even proper Ukrainian borsch, which has its own special recipe. We have our own parties, called vechornytsi, where traditional Ukrainian music is played, songs are sung, jokes are told. You will see Ukrainian dress, such as kozhuky and vyshyvanky. You will have no doubt that you are in Ukraine.” As for the jokes, “I’m not going to deny that some of them are anti-Russian, but there is a lot more to Ukrainian humour than just ‘muscoli’ (disparaging name for Russians) jokes.” I wonder how Taras gets by, in a city where most people still

16.indb 20

Visiting football fans (okay, mostly English) have been known to taunt their Ukrainian counterparts with the refrain, “You are just a **** part of Russia”. That’s harsh, and yet, 20 years on from independence, most in Kyiv still converse in Russian, and, be honest, how often do taxi drivers give you a price in roubles? So as Ukraine prepares to welcome thousands of the international community in the form of football fans, what will they make of Ukraine? Come to think of it, what is Ukraine? In search of answers, we sat down with representatives of the ‘real’ Ukraine, the IvanoFrankivsk Foundation, to find out what Ukraine, and they, are all about. speak Russian over Ukrainian. “You know, that’s not a problem for me. If a Ukrainian speaks to me in Russian, I answer in Ukrainian. Quite often, they say ‘Thank you for doing that, I don’t know why I was speaking Russian, it is just a bad habit.’ If it’s a Russian, that’s another matter. I am perfectly able to speak Russian, so I do. But, with Ukrainians, it’s not right – we have our own language, why speak a foreign one?”

The Government Conundrum

It’s certainly an interesting combination of an organisation: a very pro-Ukrainian stance, with its key patron, Bohdan Gdichinsky, a member of a government widely considered pro-Russian. Asking Vitaliy about this, he’s quick to answer, “We don’t see any contradiction. As an organisation, we support the goals of the government and believe that Yanukovych is the right person to unite Ukraine. But, there is no direct governmental involvement in our organisation.” So, where does the money come from? “We have sponsors, businesses from Ivano-Frankivsk and individuals who wish to contribute to our goals.

However, it’s true that we don’t have as much funding as we would like. We are keen for more people to know about us, and the work we do,” Taras answers. And that work is, “Firstly, we are a society for people from our area. Many of them arrive in Kyiv and find it hard at first, it’s very different from the life they are used to. We are here to help them in every way we can – advice on life, accommodation, introducing them to friends, events. They can even just come here for a chat. As well as this, though, we also have charity campaigns to raise money for good causes in Ivano-Frankivsk.” So, who can join? “Primarily, people who were born in Ivano-Frankivsk, or whose parents were. But, you know, our doors are not closed. If someone feels Ukraine, feels Ivano-Frankivsk in their hearts, they are one of us.” It’s nice to know that’s an option, though for myself, I’d probably need to expand my Ukrainian from ‘bud laska’, ‘oberezhno’ and ‘nastupna stantsia’ before doing so. I wonder how many members there are, and how many there should be? “We have 1000 members,” Vitaliy informs me, “but there are, we know, at least 200,000 people in Ukraine who are either first or second generation Ivano-Frankivsk people.” Taras takes up the theme: “More, across the world, there are hundreds of thousands of people with connections. We have been here for 12 years as one office, but in the future we should have branches internationally.” It’s quite a thought, really, Ivano-Frankivsk offices going global – McIvano-Frankivsk, if you will. More than that though, it’s been very refreshing to meet Taras and Vitaliy. Proud Ukrainians, positive Ukrainians, true Ukrainians. Take that, football fans!

PREMIER PALACE Just before the Easter holiday, Ukrainian celebrities put their heads together to see what they might be able to do for some of our local charities. The result was an auction of Easter-themed items. United by the Towards a Dream organisation on 6 April, all of the items came from children in orphanages all over the country. What sets this project out from many of the others, however, is that all funds raised will be given to all of the children who participated.

Spring They also have an extreme liking for ‘barter’, absolutely unaccompanied by any knowledge of how to do so. The other week, I was covering an event at a club, which may or may not have a name similar to the good book. It’s a club to which we already deliver What’s On – a free service and one of great benefit to any establishment. Anyway, the PR girl decided that, in addition to this, she’d try her hand for a free advert with us. So, the offer came that we should be ‘partners’ with this chosen establishment. Great, what would that do for us? Well, we would give them an advert, in return, the offer came back: they would distribute What’s On in the club (which they already do, and is a service from us to them in any case), they would ‘spread a word’ about What’s On (just the one?), ‘leading references about you on a partner information’ (what does that even mean?) and, best of all, a ‘manifestation of your desires on our video projector’. You should really be careful before offering to manifest a person’s desires anywhere, let alone in public. In any case, I referred their offer to our publisher, Neil, who politely informed them where they should best locate themselves. It’s a policy I have since generally adopted – I’m sure that one day in the future Ukraine will have a PR industry to be proud of. But for now it’s a work in progress.

Anyway, it’s that time – your (adopted) country needs you. Can you spare a few minutes every day to come and help us out with construction work? I’m talking 30-40 minutes tops. Ok, maybe an hour or so. Two hours max. We’ll need you to assist with papering over cracks, general sweeping of things under the carpet and occasional shutting of stable doors when there appears to be no horse. Waiting for you, Big Vik Big Vik, Look Big Vik, here’s the deal. I live in Ukraine and I like it here. Ok, I don’t want to be here for all my life and who’s to say that the reason I came here in the first place wasn’t that it was similar to Russia, but a little easier to be in. In any case, I’ve grown fond of your (my) country. It’s not perfect, I don’t think it ever will be. But, it has a charm, it gets away with it. And, you will have a EURO 2012 worthy of your country – it’s not going to be incredible, amazing, a tour-de-force, but it’ll be fun, you’re going to get away with it. So, just chillax Big Vik. What’s Hot

M

y colleague Vadym Mishkoriz’s excellent piece the other week on PR people really struck a chord with me. Part of my work here at What’s On also involves dealing with PR people and I can report, that with a few notable exceptions, they are not that great. I worked for the government’s marketing arm, the Central Office of Information, for several years in London so have had some previous experience of such sorts. London PR people are generally pretty insincere, faintly phony, fairly full-of-it and rather self-important. They are, however, almost universally competent. Their press releases are well written, sent out punctually and tell you what you need to know. In Ukraine – as with so many things here, you have the worst aspects of the west without the accompanying benefits that make the west… the west. So, the PR people here are mostly insincere, phony and full-of-it. They are also, bizarrely, proportionately even more selfimportant than their London counterparts and, for the most part, dizzyingly incompetent. PR here seems to amount to, in many cases, simply a beauty contest. Which means many places will have very pretty PR girls to smile at you and give you all the spiel, whilst blithely underperforming in their chosen vocation. Press releases will come out excitedly announcing events a day before the event. So, on a Wednesday, for example, I’ll get a press release at What’s On announcing an event on Thursday. If I’d had that a week before, maybe we could have done something.

Take Me Out!

Lyon Take Off To

I have always dreamt of spending at least an evening in Lyon. I have even got my to-do list already completed for the trip. As it’s accumulated a number of layers of dust, however, we take in the Lyon Wine Bar to see whether it is even still valid.

T

his evening, we are headed neither to Rue du Boeuf nor Rue de la Thibaudière, streets that house some of the best wine stores in Lyon. Rather, our path is aimed more at Kyiv’s downtown, along Prorizna Street, where the cosy little Lyon is nestled. For Kyiv, the wine bar concept is still refreshingly new; especially since Ukrainians are better known for a night out with vodka and beer. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be sipping on a few varietals while seated in a corner somewhere, fitting the traboules and Renaissance courtyards

16.indb 30

into conversation. In fact, I already feel a bit dizzy at the possibility of crossing out a couple of lines on my long list: this French-themed wine bar is a good first step to fulfilling those crazy dreams right here in Kyiv. The thought that this wine bar might even have some sort of teleportation device that leads us directly to France crosses my mind.

Looking for Comfort

Lyon the venue, not the city, is relatively pocketsized. Upon first inspection, it makes for a cosy little place to spend the evening with friends or colleagues, without getting rolled up in all the exaggerated pathos that is typically Kyiv. Done in black and white style, everything surrounding the front flashes white, clean lines, only to have the colours turn darker the further you move in. We choose to remain up front by the window, and plunge into the plush white chairs that seem almost as if they have been placed there just for us. A few minutes in and I realise this is not necessarily the best place to park. I feel like a bit of a mannequin advertising the venue’s wares, and with passers-by peeking in at regular intervals (they are curious after all), it’s not the best spot to relax, regardless of the glass of wine soon to be in hand. “The teleport to France might be

downstairs,” my friend jokes, so we move down to investigate. Descending, the lower hall looks like a real French wine cellar. It has been done in shades of brown with huge polished tables and wooden chairs more suitable for a larger celebration rather than an intimate date. The Russian pop being played is not what I expected. Nevertheless, we are on our own down here and nobody is going to be peeking at our plates from the street, so I don’t mind. Besides, our lovely waitress has promptly changed the music to lounge, something more akin to the style of the venue. Once we are settled, we both look at each other and think wine! Since we are in a wine bar, one would think the wine menu of Lyon to be of decent size. Well folks, you would be right. More than that, however, the descriptions of wine are so endearingly sophisticated they make you want try them all. Listen to this: “Powerful reds: can have spicy, animal, tobacco, chocolate and ripe fruits taste”. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? The “animal taste”, in particular has got me. I’m at a loss for words, frankly speaking, and so we start off with a couple of universal favourites: Beaujolais George and Mouton Cadet Rouge. Mmmm… The teleport’s just getting warmed up…

Italian Delights

Drinking wine is not the only option Lyon can offer its customers, and, of course, a glass must be accompanied by an excellent French-style meal.
