What’s Up

Ukraine-Canada Trade Relationship Falters Proposed bilateral free trade relations between Ukraine and Canada have stalled amid a number of unreasonable Ukrainian demands – Ukraine is not too pleased and, characteristically, can’t see what the issue is. Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada Vadym Prystaiko is quoted in the Toronto Star as saying the deal has fallen over after three years of talking and five rounds of negotiations due to Ukraine’s attempt to renegotiate hundreds of tariff reductions at the World Trade Organisation. Yet, Prystaiko appears to be perplexed. “We don’t believe this can be done in cold blood, that easily,” Prystaiko said of the suspension of talks. Nearly 2.5 billion hryvnias in trade and services is exchanged between Ukraine and Canada per annum and a free trade agreement would greatly bolster that sum. But it seems, at least for now all talks are over. According to Prystaiko discussions to seal the deal broke down in June, after rounds of meetings in Kyiv, Ottawa and Geneva. Canadian International Trade Minister Ed Fast was fast to fire off a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart saying “thanks, but no thanks”. The letter stated Canada was unhappy with Ukraine’s attempt to renegotiate 371 tariff reductions mostly to do with agriculture at the World Trade Organisation. Point blank Canada demanded changes or free trade talks would not proceed. The Ukrainian government says it is surprised by the Canadian about face, but the international community would take the opposite view. Ukraine is a country that needs to forge relationships with trade partners – and desperately, it cannot throw its weight around by making demands and then feign surprise when they are refused. We can’t say we’re surprised: until Ukraine learns to play with the big boys it will play alone.

One Track Minds Lead to Tragedy In perhaps what is the ultimate in unsafe sex, a Ukrainian couple’s lust for each other and urge to spice up their sex-life ended in tragedy when a woman was killed by a train and her partner had his legs torn off during some pre-dawn nookie on a railway track. According to police, the accident took place in the south-eastern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhya early Saturday 28 September. The man, who has given police a statement from hospital, said he and his girlfriend were consumed by passion following a party. “Returning from our friends, my girlfriend and I could not overcome our passionate nature and wanted to feel a sense of thrill near a railway track,” the police statement quoted the 41-year-old man as saying. Apparently (surprise, surprise) the pair was believed to have been drunk. The woman was killed instantly and the man was hospitalised with his legs torn off below the knee. Police have not released the names of the victims, but have opened a criminal investigation over the safety violation.

World’s Largest Photograph Snapped in Kyiv An aerial photograph shot of 500 Ukrainian singers, dancers and musicians in national costume on Kyiv’s Mykhailivska Square is set to become the largest individual frame photograph in the world. The image, shot from a hot air balloon by UkrainianAmerican photographer Serhiy Melnikoff on Saturday September 28 features 500 singers, dancers and musicians representing Ukraine’s national art scene. They include the Grigoriy Verevka Academic Folk Choir, Pavel Virsky National Academic Dance Group, Ukraine’s Bandura-Players Capella and the National Academic Folk Orchestra. Wearing national costumes and carrying musical instruments, the musicians were assembled by Melnikoff for a panorama called The Soul of Ukraine which will be printed on an 8 metre by 2.7 metre canvas from an individual image. Only one copy of this photograph will be made which gives its owner the right to enter it into Guinness World Records’ annual book. And forget digital, Melnikoff’s image will be distinctly old-school – he works with traditional photo film using a bespoke panoramic camera which was produced for him by Fuji Corporation. Before years’ out, Soul of Ukraine will be exhibited at the European Council in Brussels as part of an exhibition of Melnikoff’s works and will be used in a photographic book called Ukraine.

Yanukovych Riding Popularity High Yes, you read the headline right, one in five Ukrainians are ready to vote for the incumbent Viktor Yanukovych at the next presidential election and the same number believe he has done more for integration with the EU than any other. According to the results of the survey released on Monday 30 September, by the Research and Branding Group, if the next presidential elections were held on 6 October, Yanukovych would comfortably retain power with a total of 20.8% of the vote. His nearest rival, UDAR Party leader Vitaliy Klitschko only managed 11.7%, narrowly ahead of the 10.9% for leader of the Batkivschyna Party Yulia Tymoshenko, and 6.3% for leader of the Batkivschyna faction in parliament Arseniy Yatseniuk. Leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine Petro Symonenko would get 4.9% of the vote, independent Petro Poroshenko 3.2%, and the Svoboda Party’s Oleh Tiahnybok 3.1%. Some 11.5% of respondents said they would not go to the polls, 16.6% were undecided, and 7.9% said they would vote against all candidates. Yanukovych’s result comes at the expense of all other contenders, whose standings have slipped from previous polls. The reason for his supremacy may be his courting of the European Union. While Yanukovych’s attempts to woo Europe have been awkward at best and akin to turning up to a date drunk at worst, he is clumsily stumbling down a path towards integration and hopeful Ukrainians seem prepared to forgive the big lug’s foibles. The results showed 19% of respondents believed Yanukovych had done more than any Ukrainian politician to bring about the signing the Association Agreement; 7% named Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk; despite her being completely out of the political picture courtesy of a prison cell 6% named former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko; 5% UDAR Party leader Vitaliy Klitschko; and 3% independent lawmaker Petro Poroshenko. The survey was conducted across all regions of Ukraine from 15 to 25 September and canvassed a total of 3,117 respondents aged over 18 years. The margin of error is 2%, so it looks as if Big Vik may just be part of the Ukrainian political landscape for a while yet.

Ukr aine Today

by Tom Bell and Vadym Mishkoriz

Young Kyiv Entrepreneurs Mean Business The most stressful times in life include moving house, getting married, the first time in a marshrutka and starting your own business. Despite the latter though, many shrewd young people with new ideas are trying to establish themselves in Kyiv, hoping to produce the next big thing. What’s On meets three budding business people to discuss their inspirations, successes and challenges in business and looks at where you can turn for business mentoring and education.

I

n the modern world, success is usually associated with wealth, and the best way to gain it is to launch a profitable business. When the notion of “business” came to the previously collectivised Ukraine – where everything was controlled at state (Soviet) level – in the early 90s, it not only laid the foundations for overall development, but also provided people with the knowledge they could do something on their own. Private businesses were a complete innovation for what had been a dinosaur-like one party-controlled state and savvy people were quick to seize opportunities. Two decades on from independence a new business-minded generation is emerging, which, unlike the first business pioneers in Ukraine, are forced to think smarter to find a niche in a competitive market. Here they share their thoughts.

vlad tislenko “I’m the CEO of a team project to develop a new LED Flash for smart phones and tablets called ‘Iblazr’. I’m into photography and saw more and more friends using cameras on their phones. I realised after a birthday party there was no iPhone flash on the market and that inspired me to design one. A big challenge has been constantly adapting the product to make it the best. This takes a lot of work, sometimes 14 hours a day. Even my mum didn’t like it at first! We raised money through Kickstarter, a website where people can fund creative projects. We easily surpassed our $58,000 aim and are now the biggest company

36.indb 6

of its kind in Ukraine. After we fulfil our initial orders, we’ll start selling the product worldwide next year. My advice to entrepreneurs is to keep trying; if one approach fails, try another; eventually you’ll be successful.”

dmytro afanasiev Dmytro is in charge of a team developing travel website go2.ua, a new internet platform which brings together people who want to share their travel experiences with those who want ideas of where to go and what to do. “I’m always travelling and one day I thought, why am I mixing business and travel? I did some research and found although the total travel industry generates trillions of dollars every year, it’s badly structured. It’s difficult to find suitable information, talk to fellow travellers and make money from reviews, so I started the website. We’re improving the site all the time – my dream is for the site to become one where travellers go to first.”

tanya logacheva “I studied marketing at university and worked for a brand consultancy. When doing some research, I noticed non-food items in Ukraine are expensive compared to Western Europe because stores here are not as efficient – from the designing or buying process right through to selling and marketing. I want to change this process; it takes a lot of work as businesses are resistant to change. The biggest headache is Ukrainian legislation though! My dream is to open a sports retail business one day where people can buy stuff at a fair price.”

luck is not enough Good fortune can take you a long way in the business world, but for long-term sustainability some good business-sense is essential to help people navigate the daunting journey to entrepreneurship. Help is at hand, here’s a rundown of business mentors and schools in Kyiv.

start-up ukraine (Moskovska 27)  280-3499 Start-Up Ukraine is a company which gives entrepreneurs knowledge, support and space to work within an office with a very modern warehouse feel, like the Google office. Think of it as a half-way house for young business to get on their feet before going it alone and setting up elsewhere. Co-Founder Anna Petrova explains that lots of young entrepreneurs have ideas but the combination of not knowing how to progress and fear of failure hinders them. However, with a change in mindset, some experience and the occasional kick up the backside, they can become successful, she says.

Before 1998, no one had ever heard of Yulia Chicherina. Then her song 40,000km hits radio stations everywhere, followed by Tu Lu La and Zhara (Heat), making her a household name. Producing albums here and there, with a total of five since the early 90s, she’s not done well with awards, despite her popularity. Her biggest musical achievement is undoubtedly her win at Russia’s MUZ TV in 2002 for song Moi Rock’n’Roll, which she recorded with Bi 2. In 2001 Billy Novikov and his friend Andriy Reznik formed a band to play music they describe as “romantic alco-jazz”. Since that time they’ve released five studio albums, three concert albums and a couple of singles and compilations. And that’s all done as they say DIY-style without any help from third parties. This year the band released their latest album Jazz in the End of the Tunnel tracks from which Billy’s Band will bring to Kyiv for this show. Tickets: 250 –1,000hrv 067-224-4111

already created and can easily turn into a playback. What attracts you personally in the style of music you create? Why do you think people love it?

One of Norway’s most creative electronic-jazz musicians, Bugge Wesseltoft places his own spin on the genre. The same freeform improvisation characteristic of the work of the likes of Henry Mancini (think the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther films) and the eclectic music of Alabama jazz great Sun Ra are encapsulated in Bugge’s future jazz or nu jazz. His compositions are equally at home with fans of deep house, techno, ambient, as well as traditional and experimental jazz purists. What’s On speaks to Wesseltoft ahead of his Kyiv gig this week.

S

Oh...so many great musicians. I’m impressed mostly by musicians and artists who are openminded and dare to be open in a concert situation. What kind of music do you listen to in your car, while exercising, or having breakfast?

In the car...mostly my wife’s music – Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, very loud...ouch, skiing and biking I listen to the sounds around me, at breakfast it’s classical music. You’ve travelled a lot – which country impressed you the most and why?

Such a difficult question...So many fantastic places! I love great audiences. Lviv in June was great, so are Istanbul, Shanghai, and Beirut. Generally I love the eastern part of Europe and Asia.

Let’s start from the beginning of your career – you’re a self-educated musician – how did you manage to do that? Who helped you? When did you understand music is what you wanted to do in life?

You first played with rock and punk bands, later switched to jazz – how did that happen?

I have always had a great interest in music, all kinds of music. So it’s natural for me to take inspirations from various sources. However the improvisation part is important to me, I don’t like being constrained, and whatever style I try to do I will always

I’m attracted by having lot of open ends and possibilities in my music. Both sound, groove and style wise. Being able to throw in any idea on the spot, also I’m fascinated by using electronic elements in an improvising aspect. Finally it’s all about the energy I manage to create with the listeners. You’ve collaborated with many wellknown musicians – can you name who impressed you the most and why?

ince the early 1990’s Bugge Wesseltoft (his first name is conveniently pronounced Boogie) has made an impressive, truly post-modern transition from the Nordic jazz traditions exemplified by the ECM record label, to forming his own label Jazzland in 1996, a label created by Bugge to release his own recordings, but it quickly grew beyond this initial premise; Jazzland soon hosted many emerging jazz groups which tread the fine balance between jazz and electronics. Wesseltoft shares his vision of music and inspiration, and gives Kyiv audiences a taste of what they can expect at the gig.

My father is a guitarist and I believed from an early age I learned by listening to him. I played the piano from the age of two but always just by myself, by ear, without teacher or music scores. After spending most of my youth listening and paying music I decided at age 19 to become a musician.

So tell us more about what you are bringing to Kyiv, it’s not your first time to the Ukrainian capital.

incorporate improvisation, which may also be called jazz. You inject your form of jazz with electronica – do you think jazz in its pure form is not of interest anymore?

The idea of jazz is and will always be interesting because it’s the nature of jazz to fuse music together in a new way. I love this! Trying to play jazz like they did in the 40s, 50s or 60s is completely uninteresting to me.

Jazz music is much about improvisation and the interaction of the musician and the audience. Does this interaction/energy exchange at a concert matter to you?

Absolutely! This is the key in music! To create a conversation with your audience – the special and unique thing with jazz is that every moment and concert is new to the audience, much different to classical music or rock, where most music presented live to an audience is

I’m looking very much forward to come back to Kyiv! I generally find Ukrainians more interested in music than Western Europeans! The programme I will bring is mixed. One acoustic solo-piano set featuring jazz, and one electronic set featuring laptop, electronics and grooves in combination with acoustic piano. W

It’s that time of year again, where colours and cuts and all things cloth-related figure prominently among Kyiv’s coming attractions. We go down to the designers’ lair for a quick synopsis of what’s hot for Spring/Summer 2014 and offer you a quick rundown of what might be seen on the runway this season.

volodymyr nechyporuk

General Producer Ukrainian Fashion Week

The 33rd Ukrainian Fashion Week sets a record this season in terms of events and foreign designers. Guests will have the opportunity to attend events in 20 different formats, such as art installation, video projects, lectures and unique collection presentations. Five designers will present as part of the New Names programme, while Fresh Fashion could well be termed Fresh Fashion International, considering we’ve got designers coming from the UK, Kazakhstan, Georgia as well as Ukraine. There will also be a lecture by France’s Garam Gvasalia – one of the most colourful and charismatic characters in European fashion. And to round out the week, UFW’s last show is thanks to Indian designer JJ Valaya, who has prepared a national tribute.

My collection this season is all about symbols; small elements growing into larger pieces, which I hope will become a talisman in black in and beige. Fragments of embroidery are key in all of my dresses. And this year, for the first time, I had my prints made in Ukraine!

My spring/summer collection, which we have lovingly called Kaleidoscope, is very bright. Look for vivid, contrasting colours and shades with lots of geometric shapes and silhouettes.

My collection reflects the endless conflict between the conservative and the liberal, and includes the confrontations of opinions and perspectives. You will find graphic, clear-cut silhouettes in summer coats, cocktail dresses, blouses, trousers and jackets. Deep black combines in asymmetric saturation with shades of yellow, fuchsia, and colourful blues.

Our new collection is called Agro-chic, and reflects the beauty of nature inherent in all natural shades and colours. I was inspired by a recent trip to Italy, where I became acquainted with the life and mentality of the locals, how these people live, the traditions they observe and their attitude towards women and the family. Swan Lake – The Contemporary Version (modern-ballet in two acts) featuring the Kyiv Moden Ballet Kyiv Theatre of Opera & Ballet for Children & Youth (Mezhyhirska 2) 15 October at 19.00

FC Thun is a small team from a small town which, on a small budget, managed to reach the Group Stages of the big European competition, the Champions League, a few years back by beating our very own Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifying round. Whether that will provide extra motivation for Oleh Blokhin’s boys remains to be seen. But with (again) the prize on offer being advancement in lucrative European football for the winner, expect a great game! Tickets: 10–300hrv www.nsc-olimpiyskiy.com.ua

One of the Ukrainian capital’s most wellknown and loved contemporary collectives has taken a choreographic classic and made it their own, thanks to the genius of dance master Radu Poklitaru. Swan Lake is reborn in this new, contemporary version, which sees Odette magically turned human. As a philosophical reflection in movement, the question as to living someone else’s fate is central. The answer, which sees our no longer feathered heroine as someone she is not, proves a cruel verdict. Tickets: 80 –200hrv 425-4280

Kyiv Debates

by Neil Cambell and Alina Smolina

To Drink to Drink Here at What’s On, the air is often filled with lively debate. Occasionally we decide to air our (dirty) laundry in public and last week was one of those occasions. It’s a topic that is perennial in Kyiv as cold weather forces the populace indoors. Yup, the social calendar goes from revolving around strolls in parks and barbecues in forests to boozing, especially with the extended Ukrainian silly season. Publisher Neil Campbell and Brand Manager Alina Smolina go head-to-head to answer the question: to drink or not to drink?

C

ampbell is going to argue for the merits of an odd tipple or more, while Smolina assumes the mantle of a paragon of virtue (well at least where alcohol is concerned) by rejecting the idea of imbibing in alcohol as a good winter warmer. Without further ado it’s ladies first.

Smolina: My key points are (I’ll bullet point them for clarity): • Alcohol simply isn’t tasty. When I was drinking, I couldn’t eat dessert and now I can and the food I eat tastes much better than before, without beer or wine. • Economy: not only am I not spending money on alcohol

36.indb 18

I also don’t need to get a taxi back home from a club, as I can drive home myself Now I have a lot of free time, compared to the time I used to spend drinking with my friends. When you returned home drunk the only thing you could do is go to sleep. And the next day I can do whatever I want because I’m not hungover. The smell of being hungover is terrible and you can’t get rid of it even after 10 showers. As a future parent, I need to think about the health of my kids. Drinking doesn’t help solve problems – it only makes things worse.

Campbell: Alcohol is a gift from the gods, it is the elixir of life, the amber nectar. Alcohol (especially beer) gives meaning to an otherwise inane and meaningless life, it is the root of civilisation (recent findings show that the ancient Mesopotamians settled not because of crops, but because they discovered fermented crops), it gives courage to the oppressed (the Boston Tea Party happened ’cause they got pissed up in the pub beforehand), does away with inhibitions, shows charlatans for what they are, and makes life worth living: no great story ever started with the words “There was this time, I was completely sober and enjoying a light

salad and glass of water in my favourite vegan eatery.” I would like to point out that Ms Smolina used to love her drink until one time she got so hammered she was sick for three days. Only those with serious control issues would worry what they looked like after the fourth Long Island, and normal people would look back and laugh at their dancing after the sixth. Of course, you act like an idiot when you’re drunk and do things you wouldn’t normally do. That’s the point! Many a great deed has started through drunkenness, and many a great relationship. Perhaps some men are only half themselves in bed, but a real man is ten times himself ’cause he is fired up and full of new and perverse ideas he’s

01.10 18:54:45

been too scared to implement up until now. Hangovers are bad, it’s true, and no one ever fired down a shot of tequila and said “MMMMmmmm, I’m going to have this for dessert from now on,” but there is always a price to pay, and this is a small price for the time of your life

Smolina: But usually you (that’s people in general, not just you Neil) act like an idiot when you are drunk and do things you wouldn’t normally do. You are not yourself when you are drunk

Campbell: Well, as with all good things in life, some people can take it and some people can’t. Why should we all suffer because some can’t control their drinking? Most of us can, and for most of us it makes life more interesting and exciting and fulfilling. Just because you can’t handle your booze, doesn’t mean we all need to stop.

Smolina: Okay, gloves off now. Seriously have you seen yourself after the fourth Long Island? Have you seen yourself dancing after the sixth? You don’t have moves like Jagger! I want to see with whom I’m leaving clubs and I don’t want to suffer a wipe-out of the memories of last night in the morning

Campbell: As for relationships, you said yourself that while pissed you want to see with whom you are leaving a club: why? Why not leave with whomever, and perhaps, one of these times, when you wake up beside that someone it will be a pleasant surprise and the start of something beautiful. This to me is better than going home sober and alone in which there is only loneliness and no chance of surprises on the morning, good or bad.

Smolina: But a drunken man can only be half a man in bed. Usually

36.indb 19

they nod off at the table after having too much to continue, or fall into bushes to have a nap rather than being up for some fun – while horizontal is no longer an issue for them, let’s just say “vertical” can be.

Campbell: And why are you trying to have sex with men under a table in a bar or in the bushes? Not saying it’s a bad thing. Just curious...

Smolina: I don't want to have sex with a man who has fallen asleep in the bar. Even if prior to his nap he had a chance, he’s blown it. I’m not asking everyone to stop drinking. It’s their personal choice. It’s just if you have a desire to live a full life, then alcohol is not your assistant. You like surprises and adventures? Great, make sure your life is eventful. What we get under the influence of alcohol though is not life, but an illusion of life. Was your friend’s joke really that funny? Are you really charming that girl you think is beautiful and elegant? Are you as eloquent as you think you are? Do not be fooled. You are talking nonsense.

Campbell: Alcohol is what allows a person to live life to the full. Of course, if you wanna be one of those freaks who does yoga and runs 20 miles every day, only eats nuts and berries, and meditates under a blanket, then alcohol is probably not for you, for that is not living. If you want to have fun, explore your deepest emotions, good and bad, roll the dice and act upon the result whatever that is, then alcohol is your best friend. It makes life full, it makes life exciting, it makes you try and do the things you’d never normally try and do. Maybe you don’t wanna go home with the man asleep at the bar, but I bet the man who walked up to you there with love in his eyes, smitten by your beauty and your good grace, had the courage to do so because he’d slammed a couple of tequilas immediately before. 30 Take Me Out

by Neil Campbell

The TUCC Goes All

I’m not usually the one who covers TUCC events, but this time I have to as my friend and business partner Paul, and his lovely lady Lana (chief editor of this here rag) are getting hitched in Ireland. And I don’t mind at all, because the TUCC events are always good fun, and the food is usually excellent. Ukrainian eatery in the greenery, Kureni, is on the cards this time round, and I must admit I am looking forward to it. the menu – salad with young beetroot and goats cheese. Set aside the fact that there’s no warmth in it, this is a damn tasty salad with, I am informed by Ali, a hint of acidity to it, which is complemented by the slight acidity of the first wine on offer from Dolmart – By the Glass Reisling, Villa Huesgen 2011.

more beetroot, then banosh

F

or once this month, the day of the event has been a sunny one, prompting the TUCC’s lovely Natasha to send out an email saying she hopes we might get to eat on the restaurant’s delightful terrace. Also prompted by the sunshine, I decide to walk to the venue, but as I near the Kureni and notice darkening skies and rapidly cooling air, I’m hoping she was joking.

wet weather, warm company Arriving at the place, I am greeted by the usual war-painted Ukrainian devushkas in national dress, talking and singing too loud and forcing me to drink a shot of something I don’t really want to drink. But I do anyway, ‘cause you just kinda have to. Seems that, while I am on time, I am a bit early as I’m the first one here, but shortly after I spot my good friend Paul Patelis of Kimberly Clarke hobbling towards me on his crutches. As usual, I ask how long he’s got left before he’s shot of the walking aids, and he informs

36.indb 30

me he’s very proud to be wearing two shoes again at last, and hopes to be getting around crutch-free in the near future. Following quickly on Paul’s heels comes the GM of the yet to open Renaissance Hotel, Nick Dumbell, along with his good wife Ali, Kai Gulbrandson of Kyivstar and his wife Pia, and a monk called Father Terence Richardson. As usual, I ask Nick when his hotel is going to open. As usual, he rolls his eyes, laughs, and says... Soon we are all asked to take our seats, and I am happy to find I am seated with the aforementioned Paul and Nick. Despite the rapidly worsening weather, was are seated on the terrace, and as usual, the illustrious Mr Pickard gives his welcoming address, after which we are treated to some words on the wines from the sommelier of Dolmart, who’s chosen the wines to complement the dishes. By now it’s got dark and cold, and it’s raining, but the company is good and warm, and the wine takes the chill off a little, which is more than can be said for the first dish on

Checking the menu, I am surprised that the next dish’s main ingredient is once again, beetroot. Now I am no chef, but I don’t think starting a menu with two dishes focusing on the one item would be such a good idea. Even more surprisingly for such an evening, it’s a cold soup, which, as it says on the tin, has no warmth in it! I am a Scotsman and used to wet and weary weather, but even I (as the women around me are wrapped in blankets) would like something warm to ward off the chill of the evening. Once again, it’s the wine that comes to the rescue, this time a Rosata di Sicilia Planeta 2012. Needless to say, the soup is not finished by me or most of those around me, and sadly, neither is the next dish – Banosh, which is sold as traditional Carpathian cuisine. It may well be traditional, but it’s not very palatable. As an aside, while writing this, I found the following on tour2go.com, a site that promotes itself as “Your Friend in Ukraine”: “If you’ve been to the Ukrainian Carpathians, but left without tasting authentic banosh cooked by a hospitable Hutsul hostess, your visit just doesn’t count. This creamy corn dish which just melts in your mouth is one of the true symbols of the rich and vibrant culture of people that live in the westernmost part of our country.” That may be their opinion, but my opinion is this is subsistence cuisine akin to a bowl of rice without a sauce. I am all for traditional cuisine, and it is something I delve into no matter where I travel in the world, but please, let’s distinguish between traditional cuisine

01.10 18:56:54

31

and that which had to be eaten because there was nothing else. Again, it is not finished by myself or most of those around me. Food aside, I am thoroughly enjoying the evening. For those of you who don’t know, myself and my wife recently had a lovely baby girl, which means I have not been drinking for a while, so thanks to the shot of spirits on arrival, followed by numerous glasses of wine (Paul can’t drink right now ’cause of his gammy leg, so I am helping him out), I am feeling rather more inebriated than I would normally. While this may mean I am a little more boisterous than my fellow diners would prefer, I am having a blast (see page 18 for more on this topic), and it’s helping me keep warm.

an excellent recovery Heaters have been brought out, and now even most of the men are wrapped in blankets. I am wanting some warm food in my belly, and I am hoping at last the main course will give me that. Unusual for a TUCC event, there is a choice for the main course – catfish with summer vegetables and mustard sauce, or veal cheeks braised in mushroom sauce and white wine with celery. This has the added advantage of having two wines to accompany – Antea (blanco fermentado en barrica) Marques de Caceres 2010 for the former, and Barbera d’Alba Raimondo, Fontana Fredda 2010 for the latter. It’s a no brainer for me – I am all for the veal cheeks, and it can’t come soon enough. Luckily, it doesn’t take long to come at all. It also doesn’t take me long to devour it, so hungry have I become. This dish is excellent. Like the return of the prodigal son, it offers redemption for all that has come before, and to me it is like eating the fatted calf. The meat is perfectly tender, moist and delicious, and the sauce and puree complement it perfectly, as does the wine, some of which manages to end up over the tablecloth. No idea how that happened. Those around me who’ve chosen the fish seem equally as satisfied with their main course and the wine that goes with it. Surrounded by heaters and wrapped in blankets, the main course reinvigorates everyone, and the company sparkles with camaraderie and joie de vivre.

falling at the last hurdle I may be getting this a bit out of sync, but as those of you who’ve ever attended a TUCC event will know, President of the club Terry Pickard usually gets up to tell a few jokes, but this time we’re spared and instead he wants to show us a video – a segment from a Fawlty Towers episode, the Hotel Inspectors. We watch as inept hotelier Basil Fawlty gets very worried that two guests he’s been treating terribly are said inspectors, only to find out he’s wrong – it’s a very funny episode indeed. As they all are.

Sadly, the restaurant can’t get the sound working, so we don’t get to watch it after all. Finally (with me smiling ear-to-ear from all the wine) the final course, dessert, arrives. Now, so far, we had the first hurdle hurdled with aplomb only to have the next two knocked down, but then we managed to catch ourselves, pull ourselves together and fault the second to last hurdle with room to spare. Sadly, we fall over the last one. Poppyseed pie with a caramel sauce would better be described as floppy seed pie. It’s really not very good at all. While covering TUCC events is not something I do often, I’ve done it often enough, and never once have I seen a dish go unfinished by more than one person at the table. So far we’ve had two returned unfinished by the majority of those at my table, and dessert makes a third. I think that’s a record, and not a good one for Kureni. I must say in defence of Kureni, that Pia and Kai rate this place as one of their favourites in Kyiv, so it can’t be bad. And the main course and first course salad were excellent, but sad to say, on this TUCC night, it fell well short of what we connoisseurs expect. W
