Christmas is celebrated with many wonderful traditions, with one of our favourites including a bit of Baroque. This musical style, prevalent in the early 17th century to the mid18th century is still relevant today – especially when performed by brilliant Ukrainian organists. A collection of classic compositions by great Baroque maestros like Bach, Albinoni, Pergolesi and more, will ring out through the halls of the National House of Organ to bring a festive mood to Kyiv. International opera singers gather on the evening of 22 December in Tequila House to perform as well as to sing for the supper of orphans by raising some money for the charitable Svitlyachok Project. Tenor, soprano, countertenor and baritone voices will create an unforgettable atmosphere singing Broadway, opera, folk, Neapolitan and art songs in five languages. Acclaimed Chinese singer Hao Zhou headlines the performances. Zhou has been singing since he was three and he has gone on to become a principal tenor with Opera Australia, while performing regularly in Australia, China and South-East Asia. Formerly known as Haidamaky, the band rebranded itself and took on the new name Kozak System after the departure of lead vocalist Oleksandr Yarmola back in 2012. That same year, they released their seventh album Shablya (Sword), inviting famous Ukrainians to sing on the record. Though the group is already quite famous in Ukraine, its name is relatively new on the music scene. Edward Klug, famous choreographer, dancer and artistic director of the National Theatre of Slovenia long ago impressed Ukrainian audiences with his blockbusters Quatro and Radio & Juliet. This time he brings to Kyiv two one-act ballets Tango and The Right of Spring, which promise to be a real sensation. Staged in a 15-year span, these two masterpieces are utterly different, yet both bear Klug’s recognisable style. Tango – the first performance he ever choreographed – earned him worldwide fame and numerous titles, without losing its relevance even today. The fabulous DakhaBrakha, Ukraine’s premier Ukrainian folk band is getting geared up for another gig in the capital. A Multilingual Ear for Music
Our last monthly Face of Kyiv winner for this year is Olesya Apiuk – a charming and talented linguist who believes strongly in the power of the spoken, and sung, word. The answer to why she decided to send us her photo is simple – she has been a fan of What’s On magazine for many years, and wants to try her chances at winning a week in Marseille, France, for two!
good education Apiuk has studied English and music since she was a child. Thanks to a good ear, honed by piano lessons, learning languages has always been an easy task for her, she says. “My teacher made lessons very entertaining and educational and I have always been keen on American and British literature, music and cinema, and up to now I’ve always read and watched everything in its original language.” Gradually it led Apiuk to study some of the great speeches of history, including those of King Jr, Roosevelt, and more recently, Obama. She explains: “I admire how a speech can inspire millions, change lives, history. Also, books on public speaking and interpersonal relations by Dale Carnegie have had a major influence on me and my outlook.” It wouldn’t be possible for Apiuk to become interested in great speechmakers if it were not for her passion for languages.
speaking tools In addition to her excellent English, Apiuk also studied French at Kyiv National Linguistic University, and before finishing in 2012, she thought she would then also try and learn German at the Goethe Institute. However, despite her natural aptitude for language, German had her stumped, and she postponed her studies indefinitely. French was a different story, and in her fourth year of study, Apiuk was teaching

French at Kyiv Polytechnic University as part of earning her master’s degree, as well as having the opportunity to work in the French Embassy for a short period of time. Apiuk remembers it fondly: “I was really impressed by the professionalism, and have a deep respect for the people I worked with. I believe you must work hard to get what you want, and a day when you don’t learn or earn at least something I consider to be wasted.” Today Apiuk works as a translator in a foreign company’s representative office and is always happy to put her language skills to practical use giving short tours around Kyiv to foreigners. She explains why: “Kyiv has ample sights and its own authentic style, but we can also see impressive multistoreyed modern buildings going up among beautiful historical landmarks, and that too has its own charm. I even compare myself to Kyiv to some degree: I believe we have considerable potential and are trying to find the right path towards gaining a strong identity.”
says. “It has helped me a lot in my personal growth. The first song I recorded was Could I have this Kiss Forever by Whitney Houston. There’s something magical about this song. My idols in music are Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Etta James.” Despite her love for music, it remains just a hobby for Apiuk as she’s “trying to keep my head in the clouds and my feet on the ground”.

on song Apiuk inherited a love of music and singing from her mother – a teacher of music, and also plays the piano. “Singing is a form of self-expression and I can’t go long without singing. It comes from my soul.” Her love of singing has led her to take part in various karaoke contests, and on occasion she has even won some of them. Not only does she adore singing, she believes the experience of publically performing does wonders for her self-confidence, she
– Olesya Apiuk, What’s On Face of Kyiv 2013 finalist final thoughts Her parents are key to keeping her grounded in reality, and she says everything she has become is thanks to them. “Only with them do I understand what unconditional and selfless love is,” says Apiuk. “My parents have high hopes for me, and that’s a big responsibility, that’s why I try to do everything I can to make them proud. I try successfully to be financially independent and even to help them with finances. That’s why I hope to become a businesswoman, or at least have a good career and only after that develop my musical talents. The world wasn’t created in one day and I must start with baby steps. This is exactly what I’m doing with my life now.” W

The Ukrainian Connoisseurs Club (TUCC) have had new restaurants in Kyiv on their radar for 12 years now. While some of the top scoring venues are no longer around (reasons why to be revealed in an upcoming issue), there is still a plethora of places in the capital with which to quench whatever you might be craving. We take a look at some of the venues that have particularly impressed these food aficionados in recent years.
Schosse. Actually, Schiavone’s restaurants have scored 5 stars twice, but his first, Porta Pia, had to close due to a disagreement with the landlord. However, to score two 5-star ratings at different restaurants underlines his prowess as a chef.
mille miglia Specialising in Italian fare, and inspired by the Mille Miglia open-road vintage sports car race established in 1926 to run the 1,000 miles from Brescia to Rome, this restaurant holds the honour of being the only to receive a three-time 5-star rating in the 12-year history of the club. Mille Miglia Ristorante and Enoteca at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Yaroslaviv Val may have seen three different chefs during this period but the restaurant’s performance has been consistently high.
dk restaurant The DK Restaurant at the Ramada Hotel is another successful TUCC restaurant. Ho wever DK has become better known this year for its excellent culinary events featuring cuisine from a diverse range of countries at very attractive prices. Hopefully more culinary adventures are to follow.

While, as the name suggests, Asian food dominates the menu, Grill Asia can also diversify, which was best witnessed when the Hyatt Regency sponsored Kyiv Lions Club charitable event Burn’s Night dinners over several years, and under the supervision of Kellerhoff the dinner served, including haggis, was considered the best ever.

TUCC Challenge The Ukrainian Connoisseur Club (TUCC) has been visiting and rating the dining experience at Kyiv restaurants for more than 12 years. Over those years it typically visits 10 restaurants per year to rate everything from the welcome to wine service. TUCC believes it’s got its rating system down to a fine art. It’s a system TUCC claims is the most honest, reliable, and open way to rate a restaurant; between 25 and 35 top business people who regularly dine out, not only in Ukraine but around the world, fill in a 14-question form, asking them to rate all aspects of their dining experience. It’s a formula used the world over – known as a Likert scale – a psychometric scale commonly involved in research that employs questionnaires. TUCC’s questionnaire follows the simple 1–5 format asking diners to mark out of five several aspects of their dining experience from the initial reception, to wine serving, waiter service and each food course. An average of all the points is calculated and stars are awarded as follows; score less than 4 and no star is awarded, 4 to 4.3 earns 1 star, 4.3 to 4.6 will garner 3 stars, and 4.7 or greater will see the restaurant awarded the coveted 5 stars. It’s a democratic system – the questionnaires are open for review to both the diners and the restaurant, which often wants to know what are perceived to be their strengths and weaknesses. Feedback gleaned from the reviews is often quite enlightening for restaurateurs. A TUCC rating is valid for up to three years at which time a restaurant must be re-rated as “things” change.
