6  What’s Up

Ukrainians Unite

Ukrainians united over the weekend in numbers not seen since the Orange Revolution when allegations of massive corruption, voter intimidation and direct electoral fraud during the 2004 presidential election were directed against Viktor Yanukovych. Back in the hot seat almost nine years to the day, President Yanukovych has roused the country to its feet once more – literally, bringing out hundreds of thousands in protest over his recent anti-EU stunt. Standing beside their Kyiv compatriots who gathered on European Square for much of the weekend, Ukrainians in Khmelnitsky, Uzhhorod, Ternopil, Chernihiv, Ivano Frankivsk, even Kharkiv came out to show their support for a European-integrated Ukraine. In Lutsk, a northwestern city of Ukraine, the EU flag was hoisted next to that of the city’s municipal flag. In favour of EU integration, mayor Mykola Romaniuk said, “We are a self-sufficient nation, we are entitled to live better.” EuroMaidan supporters in the northeastern city of Sumy saw more than 600 participants waving national flags, EU flags, as well as flags of Great Britain and Poland at the weekend. The consensus among local

opposition politicians and public figures was that one person cannot decide the fate of the country, and saw speakers calling for the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU, the resignation of President and Cabinet and their removal from office. Even those in Dnipropetrovsk organised a EuroMaidan, uniting more than 300 residents – a good turnout considering the city’s

geographically central location. Holding banners that read: “President – Impeachment” and the like, demonstrators had erected a tent city, which was torn down by a gang of thugs as of Monday 25 November. Citizens of Vinnytsya too gathered about 1,000 supporters of the cause, including senior citizens, students, and young families with children. Frontman for pop group TIK, Victor Bronyuk, came out and sang the Ukrainian national anthem. One young man, only 10 at the time of the

(Bonehead) Quote of the Week

“ In 2004 the Kyiv Maidan rallies brought Yuschenko and the Orange forces to office, which caused an economic collapse. The new Maidan rally demands an alliance with the EU. That will cause a new slump” – as tweeted by Russian State Duma International Affairs Committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov.

The Police are Ukrainian Too!

Over the weekend, police clashed with protestors, most noticeably outside the Cabinet of Ministers building where ranks of Militia in full riot gear had been lined up to protect the premises. Tear gas and batons were used by both sides. It was noted, however, by What's On editor-in-chief, Lana Nicole, who’d walked past not long after the fracas, that most of the police were wearing EuroUkraine ribbons in support of the cause. In addition to this, a news report had been aired on Ukrainian television where police at a cordon on Maidan were asked if they thought they were European, and while some turned sheepishly away, several smiled and nodded, with one boldly declaring, “Tak!” We call on demonstrators to remember that, while it is their job to protect property and to enforce that law, a large majority of the police support the cause. While it is your right to protest, and to defend your right to do so, perhaps it is better to use the tactics of the police and line up in ranks to prevent them getting where they’ve been instructed to go rather than to provoke violent clashes. While the police have been sent in to certain areas in a manner that seems to be against the law, and you feel it necessary to respond when this happens, it is important to remember, the police are young men doing a job. They are not our enemy, and most of them feel exactly the same way we do. Let’s treat them with respect whenever possible.

Orange Revolution, expressed his desire for European integration, saying he came because he loves his city and his country. The numbers of people mobilising in Lviv were quite possibly the largest after Kyiv, and saw an estimated 18,000 out on the streets by Liberty Square, waving Ukrainian and EU flags and chanting, “Revolution!”, “Ukraine, EU! The truth is with us!” and “Shame on the government!”. Encouraged not to disperse, demonstrators and students especially were told, “Your place is on Maidan, not in class!” Despite some support for the signing of the Association Agreement in this typically pro-Yanukovych camp, Odesa courts handed down a judgment banning any further demonstrations in the port city, beginning 25 November through to 31 December. As we go to print, one Odesa demostrator has been beaten and two are missing. The 2013 Protests in Ukraine have already got their own Wikipedia page, and thanks to www.euromaidan.com, a non-political, volunteer-based website, continually updating their links to EuroMaidans across the country, the world can witness events over the next critical 48 hours – 28 –29 November – which will decide the country’s fate in one way or another.

Putin Paying for Ukraine's Soul?

According to a report we found online, quoting insiders, Putin has offered Yanukovych $17 billion to turn down the EU and to join his Customs Union. According to the source, $15 billion is for the state budget and $2 billion is for Yanukovych’s personal pocket. We have no idea whether that’s true or not, but with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov saying that the $1 billion apparently offered by the EU is “for beggars”, then one may assume that the amount Russia has offered is much larger. Of course, Russia will always be able to offer more than Europe, but the results of accepting either offer will be profoundly different. According to another report, Yanukovych was ready to turn down the EU for the amount offered by Putin, but joining the Customs Union was one step too far. Whether that’s because he knows doing so will hand Ukrainian sovereignty to the Russians, or whether he might have to start paying up to Moscow, nobody knows, but we’re pretty sure he’d rather remain the Don in the Ukrainian pond than be a consigliore in the Russian one. So it seems we have a bidding battle for the hearts and minds of the Ukrainian elite echelons, and, as always, it’s all about money.

Around-theWorld Support for Ukraine

Despite the President and his government's decision to turn their back on the EU last week, hundreds of thousands of people around the world gathered to show their support over the past weekend, and stand by those who were on the streets here in Ukraine. Rallies were held in the largest cities of Norway – Bergen and Oslo, where people wore Ukrainian flags like capes and held placards in support of Ukraine’s European integration. Representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora, approximately 250 people of all ages, gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, with rallies taking place in other German cities such as Hamburg, Dresden, Leipzig and Stuttgart also. In Munich, about 100 people came out in support, carrying banners that read “Those who fight may lose, but those who do not fight have already lost”. In Warsaw the numbers were much bigger, gathering more than 1,000 near the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Poland. An appeal to the President of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in support of the Association Agreement garnered loud applause and cheers echoing throughout the streets. People across the US showed up in the hundreds to offer their support too. In Bos ton demonstrators shouted, “Boston, Kyiv, EuroMaidan.” In Washington, they held placards reading, “Honk for Ukraine in Europe.” In Toronto, Canada, a peaceful protest was held in front of the Consulate General, attracting people such as Stepan Bandera – namesake and grandson of the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement in the late 1930s and 40s; President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Paul Grod, who said these rallies “demonstrate that Ukraine is moving towards Europe whether the government likes it or not”; and Canadian politician Ted Opitz who believes “this should be the century of Ukraine”. And these demonstrations are just the beginning. An interactive map created by Lviv-based Bogdan Tsap has appeared highlighting pro-EU Association Agreement protests across the globe. Tsap says on his Facebook wall that he set up the interactive EuroMaidan map with all the participating cities: “Please share and let me know what I have missed.” Check it out here: www.bohdaq.name/euromaidanmap, where a click on the selected city brings up images of demonstrations in that region of the world. Very cool – keep it up pro-Ukraine supporters!

Still Welcome

According to Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and VicePresident of the European Commission Catherine Ashton, the European Union will welcome the participation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius on 28–29 November, despite him being a total wanker. She was far more diplomatic and didn’t actually use the word wanker.

This just in... As we go to print, according to Interfax-Ukraine, Kyiv’s District Administrative Court has accepted for consideration a lawsuit filed by the European Party of Ukraine seeking the invalidation of the government decree suspending the preparations for signing the Association Agreement with the European Union (No905-r). According to a photocopy of the court decision and the summons, the first hearing of the case will be held on 10 December. Let’s see, Ukraine, let’s see.

This Week in History 1 December 2004

Azarov “Not Afraid of Protestors”

While a large portion of the country was out protesting on Sunday 24 November against Yanukovych and his givernment's decision to turn their backs on the EU deal against the will of the people, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, according to a report on the Unian website, was on Russian TV telling the people there he was not afraid of the demonstrators in Kyiv. “Of course not,” he is quoted as saying when asked if the government fears the protests. He then, according to the report, rambled on about technology and financing, stating that – as if making a specific threat to those running protest pages on social media sites such as Facebook, they were keeping a close eye on it all. “If it is done within the framework of the law, then it’s normal,” he’s quoted as saying. “But if it breaks the law then obviously the government won’t behave like it did in 2004 when the legal government was overthrown before our eyes.” Telling words indeed. He is reported as going on to say that he and his government are open to the people, doing their best to explain their position, and that he can answer for every word. Interesting words, because in a separate story on the Unian site, he is quoted as saying in an interview with ICTV that the Association Agreement with the EU will be signed in early 2014. “We must find compensation,” he’s quoted as saying. “We cannot ignore the problems we have. We have to solve these problems and sign the agreement.” When he is also quoted as calling the $1 billion apparently offered by the EU “help for beggars”, it may well be that what we are seeing now is some sort of horrendous negotiation where the leaders of this country are bargaining the future of all Ukrainians against the lining of their own pockets (see Putin Paying for Ukraine’s Soul).

During the Orange Revolution, the Verkhovna Rada passes a resolution that strongly condemns pro-separatist actions and passes a non-confidence vote in the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, a decision then Prime Minister Victor Yanukovych refuses to recognise. By the Constitution of Ukraine, the non-confidence vote mandates the government’s resignation, but the Parliament has no means to enforce a resignation without the co-operation of Prime Minister Yanukovych and outgoing President Leonid Kuchma.

3 December 2004 Ukraine’s Supreme Council rejects the results of the second election round as non-compliant of the real wishes of voters during the Orange Revolution. The Supreme Council introduces a constitutional reform and creates a juridical base for a re-vote on 26 December.

6 December 2004 During the Orange Revolution, Kyiv meets presidents of Poland and Lithuania Alexandr Kvasnevski and Valdas Adamkus, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union Javier Solana, General Secretary of OSCE Jan Kubish and Russian State Duma Chairman Boris Gryzlov. Another round table featuring international middlemen takes place late at night.

Weekly Language Tutorial Komu v zhopu, a nam v Evropu! “Kiss my a**, we’re going to Europe!” A rude yet well-phrased motto of Ukraine’s FEMEN activists, and absolutely justifiable under the present circumstances, especially considering we saw a fabulous placard replacing Komu with Yanukovych this past weekend.

The Arthur Murray Dance Studio has a long and wonderful history as the largest and most well-known dance school in the world. In fact, many will not realise that its story began here, in Ukraine – western Ukraine to be exact, where Arthur Murray was born. After his parents immigrated to the US, Murray started giving dance lessons in Manhattan, the year was 1912, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, there are more than 280 Arthur Murray studios throughout the world, located in more than 35 countries. The studio here in Ukraine opened in 2011, the first such school of all CIS countries. Classes offered include waltz, tango, foxtrot, rumba, cha-chacha, samba, swing to salsa, bachata, merengue, Argentinean tango, hustle and bolero. “Call now, dance tonight!” Arthur Murray (Lyuteranska 10a) www.arthurmurray.com.ua

a built in aversion to not looking stupid got me to where I was and where I was happy. I had no inclination to take any dancing classes, not because I didn’t want to improve my skills, I always want to do that, but the reality is that this just held little interest for me. But, with an event looming at which I was going to have to dance in front of a number of people and I knew that it would most likely be filmed too, logic kicked in and I agreed to give it a shot. What could I lose? My first impression of the Arthur Murray School of Dance was how friendly everyone there is. We know, in Ukraine, that we will not get a smile at every interaction with another human being. But once inside Arthur Murray’s mirror lined walls, everyone has a smile. For some (students...) that smile is a nervous one.

Our course included both private lessons and group sessions. In private, with Volodya as our instructor (the man has the patience of a saint) things progressed well. He confirmed that I did indeed possess the natural rhythm I’d always suspected. By adapting that to the Arthur Murray method, I was, pretty quickly, managing to move in a less awkward manner. For clarity here, I’ve danced, we’ve all “danced”, but that has always been a free-spirited-after-a-fewdrinks-at-an-event kind of dancing. This was stone cold sober and formal dancing to boot. It takes a little getting used to. It takes repetition for the movements to become more natural and for the steps to become automatic rather than counted out in your head.

quick quick slow Feeling less stupid about it all, we left after that first lesson knowing that this was actually going to be a lot of fun. And, as we left, we booked ourselves in for the group class that coming weekend. Turning up then that Saturday, horror of horrors, I actually knew one of the people there, from real life. The bubble in the studio is great, you can make all the mistakes you need, nobody can see you. Then, there’s this guy, there’s no avoiding him. He’s noticed me too and I know going through his head right now is “oh crap, I know that guy” – pretty soon though it was abundantly obvious that I had the edge over him in terms of the fact that both of my feet are not left, and so I felt better. The group classes are fun. Something like a dozen people who can make up therefore six couples (be aware, there are more girls than men, just saying) and the instructor gives you a few steps, has you paired up with someone and away you go in an anti-clockwise circle around the room, making small talk with the stranger you’re now within the personal space of. After two minutes the ladies stay in place and the guys (or, guy substitutes as there was only myself, left feet, and one other chap so a couple of girl instructors had to “man up”) move on to the next lady in line and make the same small talk again. For someone who is a little shy, I can think of nothing better than this. Really, all everyone is thinking about is whether your slow comes after your quick-quick after your slow-slow. At the end of it all, I have to admit that I came out of it an even better dancer. The formalities of the Foxtrot hold no fear for me now. We can attend events and (even though I know my wife will go back to leading) I will cut an even better rug than I was ever able to before. A Season to be

by Olga German

Charitable

Founded in 1992, The International Women’s Club of Kyiv (IWCK) celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, and one of the club’s most established traditions and most lucrative money-spinners is its Charity Bazaar – an annual event coinciding with the festive season and designed to help people in need. If Christmas truly is the season of giving, then the women of IWCK do it in spades.

W

hat’s On is keen to know what is on the festive agenda for this year’s event, so we pay a visit to IWCK HQ. We are met by Dutchwoman and IWCK President Nel Kortsmit, her Vice President Nadia Mosanu from Romania, and Ukrainian staffers Head of Fundraising Marina Muzychenko and Head of Charity Natalia Mustafina who open up about this year’s Charity Bazaar.

checks and balances The main aim of the Charity Bazaar is to raise money for grants, which will be later distributed to organisations in need of funding. The process is stringent. From January through to March organisations are required to apply for a share of the grants and need to present a raft of information about their activities as well as the plan or project the money will be used for. Consideration of applications is, as a rule, done by several people who review each proposal to see if it stacks up enough for the applicant to go to the next round. The second stage is factfinding, and IWCK members personally visit the organisations to see with their own eyes their work and check the information provided in the application is

44.indb 16

consistent and reliable. At the final stage, applications are reviewed and their merits debated. The numbers pay testament to the success of the Bazaar and IWCK as a charitable force. Last year, from 47 applicants, 16 non-governmental organisations were selected. From 8,200 visitors to the Bazaar last year, IWCK raised 1.9 million hryvnias in a single day. This year they want to exceed those numbers, but still admit that you can never be 100% sure. At minimum, they at least want to match last year’s tally. However, more money raised means more organisations get support.

behind the scenes The organisation of the Bazaar is complex, time-consuming, and time-dependent. Coordination of all the activities needs planning, structure, and timing. As Head of Fundraising, Marina Muzychenko says she starts preparations from summer. The women of IWCK see the Bazaar not only as a great way to raise money for new grants but also to raise awareness of the good work of those organisations that have received grants in the past. The organisers say this year’s event will have an Olympiadlike flavour due to the upcoming Sochi Olympics. And like the Olympics, the Bazaar will be international with booths

from the embassies of 38 countries offering up their cuisine and culture. The list of embassies participating in the Bazaar grows year-on-year, and newcomers include Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Slovenia, and Slovakia. Like the Olympic rings, all the continents are represented. What exactly each of the nations present have in store is anyone’s guess according to IWCK President Nel Kortsmit. “Every embassy organises its own booth, so for us it is also a surprise. It is a beautiful way for people in Kyiv to experience the world. The world comes to Kyiv to show what it’s got.” Muzychenko pipes in, “And no one needs visas!” The Bazaar will also have IWCK-(wo)manned booths, an art corner, a boutique with clothing, and an area where you can simply sit and converse with family or friends. A lot of activities are geared towards children, with games, contests and crafts to keep the little ones occupied. The programme also includes a concert with performances from embassies.

entertainment with a purpose Head of Charity Natalia Mustafina sums up the Bazaar as a fun event with a soul: “The Bazaar is always a fun way to help charity!” Kortsmit agrees: “I want to give back to the country I have been living in for a couple of years now. I am a guest here, this is my host country.” According to Vice President Nadia Mosanu, IWCK takes that “giving back” very seriously. “It is very important work. You feel a responsibility to help others. We have a strong belief that our work is very necessary.” However, Muzychenko says having fun at the event is the main goal – there are no expectations placed on visitors, no hard sell. “It doesn’t matter how much money you spend. The main aim is to support those who really need it. We and the embassies do it for that.” So to capture a little Christmas magic and give a little back for the favour, be sure to check out this year’s Charity Bazaar.  W

Artist 20  Face of Kyiv 2013

by Vadym Mishkoriz

The Beauty

November’s Face of Kyiv winner is Alyona Yarko – a woman more used to getting others camera ready than posing herself. Yarko is a hard-working make-up artist who gets the Ukrainian stars of 1+1 TV channel ready for their close-ups. Her job means a lot to her as she gets to spend time up close and personal with the stars – they are literally in her hands.

T

he tables are turned when we meet Alyona Yarko in Posolstvo Krasoty beauty salon where she’s having her hair done for her photo shoot. For the first time we have allowed our contestant to do her own make-up for the shoot, and why not? After all, she’s the expert.

childhood dream Alyona Yarko’s beginnings as a make-up artist stemmed from her school days when she practiced a lot on both herself and her friends. As she admired the results of her handiwork, Yarko had a thought: “Why not do it professionally?” She graduated the Kyiv Academy of Hairdressing Art Fashion Lyceum in 2008. “I didn’t always have dreams of finishing this training with a red diploma, but I was truly intrigued by make-up artistry and enjoyed it immensely. You’re not unlike an artist creating a beautiful portrait, and as everybody’s different, it makes life exciting,” she says. Despite the length of time her education took, Yarko claims she didn’t learn a lot at the Lyceum, as most of her knowledge came through practice. After her studies, Yarko entered into another long process – that of job searching. Her father urged her to work for a beauty salon, but the young make-up artist was single-minded in what she wanted to do – to work in television.

life behind the camera In pursuit of her goal she even some voluntary work at the Olga Seymour Studio. Although Yarko was only 17, quite young to be working at the Studio, they agreed to educate her in the make-up artistry before sending her out to work in TV. “The first show I worked for was Stars of Karaoke with Dmytro Shepelev. That

was a defining moment in my life – after that I realised this was what I wanted to do with my life, without any doubt. Looking back, I can tell you I made the right decision,” she recalls. Another interesting aspect of her work is the need to establish a rapport with those who sit in the make-up chair to understand better what make-up they need. In 2009, Yarko started working for the Savik Shuster Studio TV show. It was her first serious job and lasted three-and-a-half years. “I enjoyed talking to some pretty smart people and I learned a lot. The guests on the show were politicians, activists, and stars and it was great to listen to what they had to say. Every day was an education for me,” Yarko says. Now Yarko is working for 1+1. She enjoys her work even more, saying that even though she has more work to do and is always busy, she has grown professionally in the past year. When asked if she might fancy working on the other side of the camera, she is adamant she’s comfortable where she is. “TV hosting is very hard work. I enjoy working behind the scenes and

seeing how what I do contributes to the final product.”

hopes and dreams Yarko spends a lot of time at work as she sees it as her way toward realising her goals, which ultimately include dreams of opening a beauty studio and a small Italian restaurant. “I’m sure at least one of these dreams will come true. A little Italian restaurant and a studio in a little European town on a seashore – that would be great!” For now though, they remain pipe dreams, as Yarko is focusing on easier-toaccomplish goals: becoming an international make-up artist and studying abroad in Prague or Paris. “My friends tell me the school in Prague is better, and as I want to learn all the ins and outs of my craft, I think I’ll go there. The next step is doing make-up for movie actors, that is more technical, yet more exciting the same time,” she says. Having yet to experience any major pitfalls in life so far, Yarko is assured that she is on the right track to achieving everything she wants in future. We can’t help but agree.  W

Provocations & Observations   27

What’s Hot

It’s been a long time since I understood the flaws in democracy, and current circumstances do nothing to alleviate my feelings towards this form of government – one man has just f*cked 46 million. And that’s not right. (Excuse the language, but no other word fits as well here). Some will argue that the last presidential election was fraudulent (and you do wonder when Azarov has been on TV declaring that this time round the protestors will not overthrow the democratically elected government as they did in 2004), but according to most observers the 2010 presidential election was fair. So shame on you, all those who voted for this man. However, that past is the past, and this is the present. And in this present this country, and all the people in it, are at a very important crossroads. This is not about party politics or a stolen election, this about a stolen future. Ukraine, unlike most counties, has the chance to choose. It can choose a future of freedom and integration into a mindset of civil liberty, justice, and free speech, and a better standard of living for all. Or, it can choose a future under the jackboot of a brutal authoritarian regime that serves only itself and uses the people as fodder to do so. It really is as simple a choice as that, and while Yanukovych and Azarov are already attempting to declare that the decisions

they are making are in the best interests of the country and its people, not many are believing them, because sadly, the current president of Ukraine has shown his true nature since coming to power. For the last three years, Ukraine has witnessed corporate raiding, selective justice and a complete disregard for the people of this nation at a level never seen in this young country since the collapse of the Soviet Union. And now, it seems, that is where the president wants to take us back to. But people of Ukraine, take heart. Now is your time. It may have seemed like it was back in 2004, but that was just swapping one corrupt incompetent leader for another. This is much bigger than that. This is about your future, and the future of your children. Right now is the most important time in the country’s history, and it is your duty and your right to protest against the decisions being taken on your behalf. The people of this country do not want to be Russian. They are not Russian. The people of this country want to be European. They are European. And no single man can stand in the way. The world is with you Ukraine! Never give in!

Neil Campbell

Kyiv Top Five In keeping with the momentum generated by demonstrations in favour of Ukraine’s European integration, the good people of Ukraine and elsewhere have been out on the streets of Kyiv and EuroMaidans around the world. What’s On suggests a small kit of handy items you might want to carry with you at all times while expressing your right to peaceful protest.

5. hats and mittens – it’s getting cold out there.

What’s Not

Heavy Handedness What, for the most part, has been peaceful protest against the government’s move to delay an association deal with the EU under pressure from Russia has been marred with police firing tear gas at protesters trying to break through cordons around government buildings and protesters firing back with pepper spray. Keep it peaceful folks.

4. umbrellas – tetyas in the underpass will try

and charge you in excess of 300hrv for a new one in case of a downpour.

3. snacks – you’re going to need your strength. 2. signs , placards, flags and all manner of EuroUkraine paraphernalia.

1. compassion – for each other, for the police,

even for the little sh*ts who have come from the east to stir up trouble.

Tweets While Ukrainian protest ratchets up a gear, hit show Top Gear also hits Ukraine. Revolution and high-rev action is in the air across Ukraine in our tweets of the week. Oleksii Khmara (@OleksiiKhmara) states the obvious: “One can always count on Ukrainian governments to renege and surprise.” Philippe Waechter (@phil_waechter) is watching the action: Ukrainian protesters flood Kyiv after president pulls out of EU deal Topless crusaders FEMEN (@FEMEN_Movement) off support: Revolution goes on! Ukrainians, stay strong! And Jeremy Clarkson of the BBC’s Top Gear (@JeremyClarkson) stops by: People of Ukraine. Thank you for a very warm welcome. Well, warm for me because I’m indoors.

44.indb 27

Revolution Ukraine shocked the EU and many of its own citizens Thursday 21 November when the government abruptly pulled out of a deal to bring the country to Europe and declared it would move closer to Russia. What started in earnest, swelled to protest of epic proportions at the weekend, we hope it continues.

Kyiv Cartoon A busload of Ukrainian politicians were driving down a country road when all of a sudden the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old farmer’s field. The old farmer after seeing what happened went over to investigate. He then proceeded to dig a hole and bury the politicians. A few days later, the local militisia came out, saw the crashed bus, and then asked the old farmer, “Were they all dead?” The old farmer replied, “Well, some of them said they weren’t, but you know how them politicians lie.”

30  Take Me Out

by Vadym Mishkoriz

On Air The golden age of radio – the period when radio reached its peak popularity with general audiences – was in the 1930s and 1940s, yet radio has always managed to hold its nostalgia-coloured ground against the challenges of ever evolving technology. To theme a bar and restaurant on century-old technology might seem a gamble, so What’s On tunes in to Radio Bar to see if it is a place that can set the airwaves buzzing.

live-shows, as well as filming them to play on big plasma screens situated all around the venue. Apart from the rather unique floorshow, the interior looks similar to any bar/pub with massive wooden tables and chairs. What we do find unusual is the lighting – it’s very bright for a venue like this, but we attribute it to our early arrival, and are sure the lights will later be dimmed to create a more intimate atmosphere.

early birds

T

he concept of Radio Bar, which opened in August this year where the old Ciro’s Pomodoro used to be, is quite unusual. As the venue is home to the commercial radio station Europa Plus Kyiv 107.0 it offers customers not just a meal but music and other entertainment as well. Having a radio booth installed inside, guests can see stars of showbiz giving interviews just a few steps from their tables as well as hear them perform afterwards. Cutting a long story short, Radio Bar is a place to mingle with celebrities in a relaxed atmosphere as my friend Sonya and I find out.

44.indb 30

comparing to what used to be It is my first time visit to Radio Bar, and as I’d been to Ciro’s a couple of times in the past I was excited to see what had changed. Although it’s a completely different venue now, there are still similarities to the old, with the new owners opting not to change the floor plan – which consists of two dining halls and one bar room; however the number of stages has been increased to two. In addition, there is a glass radio booth in the first hall where radio DJs interview star guests and broadcast

As we enter the main hall, which also serves as a bar, we find the staff busying themselves with preparations for a live gig, and decide to stop at the bar before taking our table. The show starts at 20.00 and musicians are doing sound checks, so having a mulled wine at the bar is the right decision to escape the cacophonous noise. The din is short-lived however and we have not even finished our hot drinks before the sound checks are complete and we are taken to our table. While the first hall has smaller tables that seat four people, the second has larger options with bench-like sofas as well as a couple of smaller tables set right in front of a small stage already set up for musicians to play music. We sit down and the menus are quickly brought to our table. Our server seems a bit nervous because of the slight delay caused by the sound check, but we assure her it is not a big deal and take a look at what to order.

The bar menu also has a wide selection for various tastes. My friend and regular dining companion Sonya always complains my dishes taste better so today she plays a trick on me. She waits until I decide what salad I want and then promptly orders it herself. I have nothing against her ordering the prosciutto salad because there are plenty of other options in the menu that interest me. Feeling a little bit tired I decide a good dose of vitamins will help fix my autumnal

malaise, and order a fresh Greek salad with cheese, juicy pepper, tomatoes and cucumbers. However, the prosciutto salad, prepared with salty Parma ham, cheese, salad leaves, and pine nuts drizzled with fragrant olive oil, is honestly better and would be my number one recommendation – this time Sonya’s dish is better.

44.indb 31

Finishing the salads I realise that despite visiting Italian restaurants quite often I have never ordered a pasta dish in my life. To solve this embarrassing situation I ask for a portion of tagliatelle, a type of long, flat pasta, served with seafood, while Sonya orders a salmon steak served with grilled vegetables. But before these dishes, we sample Radio Bar’s mushroom cream soup, which literally melts in your mouth and makes us a little sleepy upon scooping up the last spoonful. My pasta debut very goes well: it is extremely good thanks to a few little grilled cherry

tomatoes. Sonya makes short work of her steak and we are ready for some drinks and a little music as the concert begins. Another glass of mulled wine for Sonya and a whisky and coke for me is the perfect solution. After a couple of bluesy songs we decide to move back to the bar as the hall we are in is rapidly filling with concertgoers.

The music still fills the bar from speakers and we could watch the show on the big screen from our seats at the bar. It’s good there is the option to move from hall to hall if you want some peace, as many other similar venues simply don’t have this option. The music at the bar is not too loud and we can easily talk. It occurs to us it would be a good idea to visit this place again when a popular musician gives an interview in the booth and then plays a live show in the friendly and unique Radio Bar.  W
