What’s Up

Femen Beaten Up and Kidnapped Elections in September? We’ve returned, or rather Ukraine’s Parliament has returned, to discussions over mayoral elections for this year, with insiders saying Kyiv could possibly have a new mayor as soon as the end of September. “Even taking into account one of the last decisions of the Constitutional Court concerning the appointment of the next local elections in Ukraine, as far as I’m concerned, it would not be a violation if Parliament adopted a resolution on the appointment of early elections in Kyiv,” Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Andriy Mahera, has been quoted as saying. Continuing, “That is, the early elections of Kyiv mayor and city council members could be held a term before the next regular election in Kyiv, which are currently scheduled for October 2015.” Calling the current situation – working without a municipally elected mayor for what would end up being nearly five years should elections be put off until 2015 – a “crisis”, Mahara is no dummy, and realises fully there are obstacles to overcome were Kyiv to call early elections; the biggest being the “inability of Parliamentary factions to come to an agreement” and the current lack of budget. He remains optimistic however, saying, “If this bill is passed in the first half of September, elections could well be conducted before to the Vilnius summit.” And that, providing they are conducted fairly and democratically, could only contribute to positive cooperation with the EU. Then again, knowing who’s got the current Parliament by the short and curlies, fair and democratic may be asking too much.

With everybody’s favourite Russian president and righteous church leader scheduled to make an appearance in the Ukrainian capital this past weekend, you know Femen were on alert. Planning a protest against the arrival of Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill on Saturday 27 July, it turns out Femen weren’t the only ones on alert. According to various reports, Femen members Oksana Shachko, Oleksandra Shevchenko, and Yana Zhdanova were arrested for “petty hooliganism” after police spotted the trio naked, and later for failing to cover up. They weren’t the only ones, however, as photojournalist, Dmitry Kostyukov was also dragged into the kerfuffle after “disobeying police orders”. Not surprisingly, Kostyukov tells it a little differently: he and the three women, who were all clothed, were attacked by up to 20 men (some reports count the attackers as five or six) in plain clothes as he photographed the activists outside an apartment building. The police car drove up later to arrest them. “My head, face and back hurt, and I have some dizziness,” Kostyukov told reporters. “Oksana was hit in the kidneys and the chest.” The trio of activists and their photojournalist friend got off with relatively minor fines in a closed-door hearing on Saturday, and after being illegally held in police custody – just enough time for Putin and Patriarch Kirill to hit the road, they were all released the following day, which tells us the country’s secret service did what they were told to do: remove the problem before it became one. If you want to work with the SBU, doing the president’s bidding comes with the territory. But beating up and kidnapping a few girls in anticipation of a protest seems especially creepy if you ask us.

Two Die in Fire A fire at the National Museum of Natural History (B Khmelnytskoho 15) woke up Kyiv’s sleepy city centre on Thursday 25 July, with experts blaming a fault in the electrical grid from the use of heating installation instead of special lamps by museum workers for the blaze. Affecting much of the first floor of the building, where the exhibition The Night World of Wildlife was on display, firefighters had to work quickly to save both the building as well as its inhabitants. Due to the heat, various terrariums burst, releasing their inhabitants, with one firefighter claiming, “Had I known there would be snakes under foot I might have thought twice about returning to put out the fire!” Among the various creepy crawlies on display were a reticulated python, an acacia rat, various types of frogs, a milkshake snake, a satanic leaf-tailed gecko, a long-eared hedgehog, an Egyptian fruit bat, tarantulas and more. Regrettably, a couple of the nocturnal creatures ended up suffering sever smoke inhalation and died. The rest have all been returned to their confines, and continue to receive a little extra TLC from their keepers.

Putin Graces Kyiv with his Presence It was a massive celebration – the 1,025th anniversary of the Christianisation of Kievan Rus, that saw hundreds of eminent statesmen from all over the CIS travel into the Ukrainian capital. In addition to the presidents of Moldova and Serbia, as well as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church – Patriarch Kirill, who road in on a special five-car armoured train, which is said to be like a hotel on wheels – the revered and more often reviled president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, also made the trip. On top of attending a prayer service on St Volodymyr Hill as well as making a trip to the Kyiv Pecherska Lavra on Saturday 27 July, Putin made a point to chat to president of Ukraine, Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych, about joining his Customs Union, rather than tightening ties with the EU at the summit to take place in November. Addressing attendees of a conference in Kyiv that same day, Putin referenced the two countries’ common history when he said, “There is tough competition going on for the global markets. And I am sure most of you realise that only by joining forces we can be competitive and win in this rather tough struggle.” Though Putin also said Moscow would respect any choice made by “our Ukrainian partners”, Kyiv should not ignore the risk of retribution from their Russian brothers. Despite the Russian president brazenly dangling the gas carrot yet again, hinting that Ukraine may well be discounted on Russian gas supplies as well as receive other trade benefits should we opt to stick with our eastern brothers, Fedorovych, for his part, seemed unswayed. Eager to stress Russia’s role as a “strategic partner” in Sevastopol, where the two presidents celebrated Navy Day on Sunday 28 July, Yanukovych said, “We appreciate and value our friendship with Russia,” but showed no signs of having second thoughts regarding the EU deals. We’ll just have to wait and see if that remains to be the case four months from now.

Local Heroes

by Olga German

What’s On takes the pulse of Kyiv’s cultural and entertainment scene – the events and the faces involved. But what about those who don’t typically feature on our pages, the ordinary people who make the city tick? They are average Ukrainians who can still make a difference in our lives. We call them our local heroes.

Read All About It Our next local hero has 12-years experience selling periodicals and Ludmyla Honhalo is an undoubted expert in the sphere. A ceramics technologist and accountant in the past, this “people person” chose to sell newspapers and magazines for human interaction and communication. Thanks to this, she has become quite the amateur psychologist. However, as What’s On discovers, her job future is in jeopardy.

A

s we hurry to work in the morning we try to keep abreast of the latest news and current affairs – increasingly via the screens of our phones or tablets, or from the “older generation” of media messenger, radio and print. The crowded conditions of Kyiv’s public transport usually put pay to unfolding a newspaper or opening a magazine. Yet, for traditionalists, the smell of ink and the act of turning a page remains attractive. Cue the newsagent, the source of everything from inksmudged newsprint carrying hard news, to glossy celebrity gossip weeklies, through to niche publications such as magazines dedicated to food or homemaking. Selling them is Ludmyla Honhalo. She’s modest, she knows her job is simple, yet it keeps her interested. Customers continue to approach her newsstand as we talk. According to her, by selling periodicals you gain numerous skills, especially analytical. Honhalo is adept at gauging what people are interested in as well as the demographics – knowing which publications appeal to which ages, genders, ideologies, or what will sell well

on a particular day that week. She is a personal interface between people and information and entertainment.

what readers want Honhalo says in general, people want to know about the burning topics of the day, sometimes following the scent of scandal or a sensation. Sport is also popular, such as football, especially if there are matches on. She is subconsciously monitoring the reading habits of the nation.

Often, publications entice buyers with “freebies” or collectables. The latter involves some sort of commitment from a reader, meaning they have to buy each and every issue if they want to build the full collection. However, Honhalo knows that can bring problems such as defective goods. Once, a woman bought a magazine with a doll as a present. When she got home, her children opened the doll’s packaging and noticed it was flawed. It resulted

in the woman returning and complaining – Honhalo felt obligated to exchange it. Honesty, she believes is the best policy. “I live by believing if I can do a little good, I should do it. When you buy meat, the seller can lie about its freshness. I cannot do that. Of course, my salary depends on percentage of sales. It is not like I earn enough just to sit all day long. I have to treat others with respect and dignity.” While she is merely an employee, the owner

“Technology is another difficulty, but some people don’t have access to the Internet or television to know what is going on in the country” – Ludmyla Honhalo

Vagabond

How to Conduct a

Passing them by in the street or metro you feel as if you are in a movie and they are providing the soundtrack for your daily routine. You cannot remember their faces, but their music, good or bad resonates in your ears. They are street musicians. Where mostly they perform solo, what happens when you bring them together? What’s On meets a man doing just that.

T

he idea behind the International Vagabond Orchestra is to find musicians in different cities and make up an orchestra and the Russian man behind it, who calls himself Liotchyk _USB. His real name is Timur Bielkin, and he serves as its principal conductor. I meet with Liotchyk_USB by chance – I was looking for characters and sounds for another project, my video Sounds of Kyiv, at the entrance to Kontraktova Ploscha metro station. I had little hope he would agree to an interview. I was wrong and we engage in a lively conversation. Without any professional education in music, Liotchyk _USB started to compose. Having taken up the guitar as a teenager, he is devoted to music, he says. “As soon as the guitar was in my hands I understood music is where I belong.” And he wants to play with others.

His orchestra idea has progressed from uniting musicians to organising a Skype concert. “I came up with idea of calling it a ‘Skype-

cert’. If the phenomenon is new, it needs a new term. People can watch irrespective of geographical location.” Other formats the orchestra uses to share its music are street concerts, club performances and meetings known as “kvartyrnyk” (a concert at somebody’s flat – a “flat-cert”). While the International Vagabond Orchestra doesn’t have a website, all information is available on social network page vk.com/embro where special attention is drawn to the “Manifesto the Orchestra”: “We are musical band existing between countries and cities”. Also on the page is Liotchyk _USB’s story of the creation of his musical community: “Once upon a time, on September day of 2012 a little red kitten came up to me and asked whether I wanted to create an international vagabond orchestra. ‘Of course I do,’ I thought. In a month I went to Kyiv, then to Odesa, then to Kharkiv, then back to Kyiv. I do what I do and will keep on doing it.” If you are a musician you can check the requirements for orchestra members also listed

d Orchestra on the orchestra’s page, Liotchyk_USB is always looking for more to progress his concept further. He also mentions, the orchestra needs to form bands in big cities – Odesa, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kyiv, and Kharkiv and with each band he is planning to record a demovideo for clubs and festivals. A question that puzzles me and maybe everyone who sees these free-spirited people is why do they play on the street and does it pay enough to make a living?

go round can turn out to be quite unique, and that when you try to copy or repeat it, it doesn’t have the same drive and mood. The energy of the first time is incomparable.” Now, Liotchyk_USB is busy uniting musicians from all over the post-Soviet space via his International Vagabond Orchestra. When I ask him about the different sounds his travels are filled with, he singles out one very specific sound – voices: “A city’s melody is full of voices, voices have rhythm, thus it’s music.” W

for love or money On the wall of the group there are comments and posts like “The Vagabond Orchestra doesn’t need donations” with smileys afterwards. The community speaks for their ideals and credo: “If your music becomes a business there can be some sort of rivalry, but it will be a rivalry in business, not music. Creative work in its pure meaning is always only creative work. That is the idea of the International Vagabond Orchestra.” Liotchyk _USB himself is laconic. “The main reason for playing in the street is lack of money, it is not out of an abundance of offers from record companies.” Still, Liotchyk_ USB has enough energy and enthusiasm for other artistic activities, and stays creative even without a guitar in his hands. An avid photographer, his work is infused with the same quirkiness as his music. His artistic repertoire doesn’t end there; he also draws cartoons, and writes poems. For now, however, Liotchyk_USB is getting ready for future performances. He’s planning to apply for the Magic Town Festival taking place on 13 and 14 August in Crimea. Since 2007, this gathering has been held several times per year in Kyiv and Crimea. Organised by the World of Creativity Academy, 12 festivals have been staged (six each in Kyiv and Crimea) in total. The schedule of Liotchyk _USB is quite unpredictable, he lives life spontaneously but does have a few engagements in his diary. On 1 December, Liotchyk _USB is planning an online concert, and several days later he will perform live in Kharkiv. Even with the planning, it is still seat-of-your-pants stuff. “In Moscow I can meet musicians with whom I am going to perform on stage only at the sound-check. Some things you do on the first

Active Kyiv

by Oleksandra Obushna

Taking Arms In any cop drama there is always the inevitable scene where an officer is in the shooting range. Whether good cop or bad cop, the scene will play out the same: they will adopt the “stance”, raise their pistol, stare down the barrel towards the target and squeeze the trigger. They will fire round after round. Ever wondered what it’s like? What’s On visits a Kyiv shooting range to find out.

C

utting to the chase, and being honest, I am nervous and worried. I am close to breaking out in a cold sweat, but I have little time to think about this, I am about to, as they say in the cop dramas, “take the shot”. My legs feel rooted to the floor, but despite that my body is relaxed. I raise the gun smoothly and take aim, sizing up the target through the sight. Then I pause. I only hear the beating of my heart. If before it raced out of excitement and nervous anticipation, now it is a steady slow, sharp knock. I slowly exhale and pull the trigger. I do not even realise what’s happening when there’s a loud bang. Then a whirl of sensations: shock, surprise, euphoria, a feeling of victory, I want to repeat it again and again – to feel that sensation of being pushed back from the recoil of the gun and to smell the gunpowder.

an introduction to weaponry I had loved shooting in my school years but had only shot air-rifles, because students were not allowed to use heavier firearms. Now is my chance, and I’m visiting the IBIS Sport Shooting Club on Vadyma Hetmana in central Kyiv. From the moment I arrive, I feel like a club member as I am warmly greeted by

deputy director Bohdan Timofeev. Timofeev introduces me to my instructor Dmytro Shytikov, saying he is the “best instructor”, and leaves us to begin training. Every beginner, before they take up a gun, should be instructed in the safety do’s and don’ts – the rules for handling weapons, which Shytikov reels off one-by-one. “Guns are not toys. There are many people who do not know how to handle weapons. They look into the muzzle, point it at others... The instructor must always be on guard, because we are responsible for the safety of all visitors. The shooter also must always know what is in front of the target and behind it.” There is also such a thing as “the perfect 10”, Shytikov says. “Everyone is trying to shoot the ten. The main task of a good shooter is to hit wherever he wants on the target. This may not be the 10 only. In general, the ability of a shooter is determined by a cluster of shots in that one place at which they are aiming. If they are scattered throughout the target – this is not a result he can show off.” And the most important piece of advice for the instructor? “All negative emotions are to be left at the door of the shooting range.” I am given protective earmuffs and safety glasses to shield my eyes from propellant gases and debris. Then Shytikov tells me about

The 50-metre gallery has five lines of shooting, intended for private lessons and the adjustment of weapons; the 25-metre gallery is for individual and group sessions. “Laser Shot” – an interactive shooting experience is available in both galleries. To shoot at the shooting range – to rent a place and gun (cartridges are bought separately), will set you back 300 hryvnias. The minimum age is 18. the positioning of hands, feet and how to hold the gun – a 9mm CZ 75 SP- 01 Shadow – it’s Czech made and commonly used in law enforcement. Let’s start with the correct position of the feet and body. You stand facing the target; feet shoulder width apart and parallel to each other. Keeping your back straight, you need to lean forward a little with shoulders dropped and relaxed. Taking the pistol in both hands, the firing hand should be slightly forward and support hand back slightly to absorb recoil. The gun should feel snug in the firing hand and together with the support hand should create a shape like a circle. In this position you will have less chance of getting injured from the impact of the gun’s recoil.

the appeal of shooting By his own admission, Timofeev is a gun lover. “Some people like fishing. They want to sit for hours waiting for something – I love guns. I started shooting at 16; it was a hobby that turned into a job. I came here to work six months after the opening of the shooting range. We see a lot of people, who engage in shooting professionally as well as amateurs. There are also foreigners, but before they will be enrolled as a member of the club, they have to go through a lot of checks.”

The staff at the shooting range are all highly qualified, Timofeev says. “Almost all are highly ranked or masters of the sport in the USSR. Two women – Svitlana Palamar and Svitlana Chistiakova were also shooting champions in the USSR.” I’m also interested in what my instructor, Shytikov, has to say and it turns out he has a fascinating back-story. “I had worked for a long time as a bodyguard. I protected the lives of other people with my own. But one day I realised that I was tired of living someone else’s life. Always being with that person, always accompanying them, there is no privacy. I was tired and decided to quit,” he tells me. “And IBIS needed instructors. So here I am.” W

This small village, ironically named “Big Sorochyntsi Village”, owes a lot to this Ukrainian-born Russian writer as the annual fest brings in thousands of people from around Ukraine and abroad. In addition to a market selling all manner of handicrafts and souvenirs, expect performances of all kinds along with tonnes of fun. Admission: free www.yarmarok.in.ua

My green borshch is good and exactly as I expect it to be, but has more “body” than any other variant I’ve tried. It’s less watery and where usually there is just one piece of meat (often simply a meatball) this soup is laden with finely cut pieces the oil”. Yet it is very light and the perfect follow up to the breads. A short while later the ever-attentive Igor, who has been dutifully replenishing cutlery after each dish, returns with a small folding table. He asks if we are ready for our soup. We nod the affirmative and he quickly returns with two pots – the 60s variety white enamel decorated with flowers and red lids. He serves the soup directly from the pots into the bowls before placing them in front of us.

soup then mains My green borshch is good and exactly as I expect it to be, but has more “body” than any other variant I’ve tried. It’s less watery and where usually there is just one piece of meat (often simply a meatball) this soup is laden with finely cut pieces. Karen’s Ukrainian borshch is equally hearty and we both agree they are very filling. Which poses the question, how to fit in mains? Fortunately it’s Igor who comes to the rescue, when we order he asks when we want him to bring our dishes to us. The choice was easy here, based on our server’s recommendation I order veal medallions with baked potato and salo. There are several ways to serve this Igor tells me, among the most traditional is to slice the potato and insert slices of salo before baking. It sounds interesting so I agree to this method. There are also several sauces but I settle for adjika. Karen meanwhile opts for grilled salmon in hollandaise sauce. We

take in the atmosphere for about 20 minutes, before Igor returns with our meals. Here I have a bit of a gripe.

an extraction I am not into “gimmicky” food. However, my meal arrives on a wooden chopping board, the potato resting in tinfoil – opened and fashioned into a boat shape, to the side is a salad. To be honest, I’d prefer a plate and having to extract my spud/salo mix from the tinfoil is a fiddly, almost surgical procedure. Karen’s salmon is a far more normal affair served on a plate. Fortunately, the food makes up for any inconveniences, the veal, wrapped in rashers of bacon, is superb, the potato and salo is a tantalising combination. Karen says the salmon is delicate but delicious. This is a place to quietly feast, and as this is lunch there’s no question of squeezing in dessert. So we sit a while, me supping my second beer and Karen nursing an Americano, before saying do svidaniya to the Soviet world that once was. The service has been faultless and we take in a few of the artefacts including old telephones on the way out. There is an added bonus as we emerge into the postSoviet world. The hostess greets us with two newspaper wrapped cones – it’s semechki (sunflower seeds) packaged exactly as they did in the USSR. Spotykach is not just about traditional food ramped up a level, it’s an interesting experience in itself. W
