7 The rally in Kyiv does not abate as more and more people from all over the country flock to the capital to join protesters. A police riot squad forcefully disperses the rally from Maidan Nezalezhnosti at 03.30. A number of people are injured and arrested. EU representatives, and the UK and US ambassadors to Ukraine condemn the riot squad’s actions in dispersing the EuroMaidan rally. Ukrainian Government opposition leaders – co-leader of Batkivshchyna party Arseniy Yatsenyuk, far-right nationalist leader Oleh Tyahnybok, and world champion heavyweight boxer/prominent Ukrainian politician Vitaliy Klitschko – publicly address protesters at Mykhailivska Square calling them to continue.
One-hundred-and-sixty-five protesters need medical assistance, 109 are sent to hospital. Kyiv’s police chief Valeriy Koryak resigns for orchestrating the dispersal of the EuroMaidan rally. Protesters block the entrance to the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Bank of Ukraine. Russia indicates it does not support EuroMaidan action. The Ukrainian opposition leaders (Klitschko, Yatsenyuk, Tyahnybok) suggest a vote of non-confidence in the Verkhovna Rada for betraying the Ukrainian people.

Kyiv’s Court of Justice bans mass protest action on Maidan and European Square up to 7 January. Regardless, hundreds of thousands of people gather at Shevchenko Park: the game has changed and protests evolve from AA hopes to attempts to overthrow the government. Protesters rip down metal barricades around the city’s main Christmas tree on Maidan, break into the Kyiv City State Administration building, and assail security fences in Bankova Street near the President’s Administration. The Prime Minister’s press secretary calls the situation “under control”.
Putin: Few Cards Shy of a Deck Russian President Vladimir Putin really does live in his own little world. Sitting in his big chair in the Kremlin, in what he no doubt believes is the centre of the universe, his grip on reality seems to be slipping. Back in 2005, when he called the collapse of the Soviet Union “the biggest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century”, we couldn’t help but chuckle. We chalked it up to wistfulness, a longing for the good old days: nostalgia (that word they love to use so much here) for a time when the commander in chief said jump and the people responded – in unison, “How high?” Ordering this and directing that in the past few years, he seems to have lost a few more cards from his deck, and as a result his current delusions have really
3 December Ukraine’s Government survives a non-confidence vote. 186 deputies vote in favour; according to the Ukrainian Constitution, at least 226 votes are required. got us snickering. Commenting on the current situation here in Kyiv, Putin has said the riots in Kyiv have no direct relation to Ukraine and the EU deal. Rather, they are an attempt by the opposition to undermine the country’s legitimate government. According to him, and we quote, “...the events in Ukraine...don’t look like a revolution, but rather like ‘a pogrom’.” For those in need of a vocab lesson, a pogrom is a violent massacre or persecution of an ethnic or religious group, particularly one aimed at Jews. Ironically, this word entered English-language consciousness via attacks on minorities, specifically Jews, in the Russian Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. Just who is being persecuted now, here, in Kyiv, is unclear. What is clear is Putin’s fantastical misrepresentations of reality. Arguing that the protests in Ukraine had been prepared by the opposition in advance to undermine the legitimate government of the country, he seems certain that no one is concerned with the actual details of the Ukrainian-EU agreement and that all this has been prepared for the presidential election. You go with that Mr Putin, and then let’s count the number of cards you’re holding at the end of all this.
This Week in History 12 December 1674 The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra publishes Synoposis – the first short review of Ukraine’s history from ancient times to the mid-17th century. It is written by Innokentiy Gizel and used as a school history manual until the early 19th century.
7 December 1990 The Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR endorses the Law on “Local councils of the Ukrainian SSR people’s deputies and local self-rule”. It is marked as a professional holiday of elected officials in municipal, village, district and regional councils.

Leaders of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus meet in Viskuli, the residence of the Belarusian Government in the Belovezhskaya National Park, to sign the agreement on establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The USSR ceases to exist.
11 December 1991 Ukraine announces its decision to establish diplomatic ties with the former republics of the USSR.
8 December 2004 The Verkhovna Rada introduces amendments to Ukraine’s Constitution, thus transforming Ukraine into a Parliament-Presidential republic. Four-hundred-and-fortytwo deputies attend the Rada meeting, 402 deputies vote “yes” on the resolution.

Founded back in 2002 by lead singer Yaroslav Maliy and friends, Tokio worked their way up to the top of the charts and rather quickly, thanks to well-tuned singles Serdtse (Heart) and Kto Ya Bez Tebya (Who Am I Without You). Collaborating with Ukrainian Druha Rika a short while later, the band tried to capitalise on their success with Ukrainian/Russian song Dogonim, Dozhenemo (Catch Up, Catch Up). olga german – ukrainian journalist My trip to France was a great opportunity for me. I enjoy participating in volunteer projects and of course dreamed of going. I had also wished to learn a bit of French some day. This “day” came earlier than I expected. Just like that, hoping my knowledge of other foreign languages would assist me, I went on my adventure. I tried to learn basic greetings, introducing myself, counting, and asking directions. Though my most-used expression was “Parlez-vous anglais?” My first conversation happened in the airport where I could easily speak English. Apart from that, I was warned the French don’t speak much English. I needed to catch a certain train, so the representatives of the volunteer organisation could meet me. I had a phone number, that’s all. I cannot say that the Paris metro system is very complicated, but fatigue quickly set in. Fortunately, people were eager to help. One word in English, one in French and I soon found my way. One of favourite moments is when a lovely French man from the volunteer

He said he didn’t speak English and on the car journey we took turns to use a dictionary, which made for a pretty funny conversation. I think it is crucial to understand the mentality of people. I think there is something magical about language, so much history and tradition lies behind it. How can you explain that in a different language? Also, not all people master other languages enough to express the full spectrum of their emotions. I do want to learn French now. French simply sounded melodic to me and it is an instrument I would like to learn to play and go to France with knowledge of the language. It seems then I would have a completely different impression. Some of my French-speaking friends would laugh at me for not pronouncing French properly. They would ask me to say “tur-lu-tu-tu” – turns out it means nothing, yet shows you are not a native speaker. W

the expat view
If you don’t get acquainted with the language before you arrive in another country, the learning process is launched as soon as your first conversation takes place. But watch out, there are no short cuts (unless you meet a pretty Ukrainian girl), as this expat, who has asked to remain unidentified, reveals: “My first attempt to speak Russian was when I was trying to buy a telephone card for a public payphone. The woman at the kiosk refused to understand me, but I just blocked her window until a queue built up and she finally had to sell me one.” Regardless of day-to-day requirements, if communication with locals is not a priority, the majority of foreigners will learn basic phrases to get by. Sometimes, however, it is not only about one language: “When I came to Kyiv I wanted to learn Ukrainian but everyone told me I should try to learn Russian because if I tried to speak Ukrainian people would answer in Russian and it was confusing. I started to learn Russian but my heart wasn’t in it. And so I have learnt some expressions, such as pivo, pozhaluysta (beer, please), yeshche piva pozhaluysta (another beer please), and povtorit pivo pozhaluysta (repeat beer, please).” By not making attempts at learning the language of the country you are in, you end up, literally, putting yourself in a box. Fortunately, most expats know this themselves: “I think it is very important to learn the local language. I want to learn Ukrainian, and I hope one day I will.”

The media is tasked with reporting facts in a fair, balanced and unbiased way. Occasionally the tables are turned and the spotlight turns back on the messengers. That’s the point of Kinomedia – a non-profit short film festival about the media. What’s On looks at the portrayal of newsmen and women both here and abroad on film.
Good Night and Good Luck (2005, US) Set in 1953, during the early days of television broadcast journalism, this film tells the story of outstanding CBS anchor Edward Murrow and his stance against Senator Joseph McCarthy’s rooting out of supposed communists and communist sympathisers. “Good night and good luck” is the final line of his epic speech before leaving CBS. “This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. Good night, and good luck.”
K
inomedia has focused on the work of the fourth estate since 2010, inviting both amateur and professional filmmakers to address mass media in cinema. Open to Ukrainian filmmakers internationally, the festival features animated, documentary, art, and experimental films up to 20 minutes long. Presided over by a jury of journalists, filmmakers and critics, the winners in each category receive 3,000 hryvnias while the grand prix winner walks off with 6,000 hryvnias. There is an additional People’s Choice Award voted for by cinemagoers at public screenings and the festival’s finals. The efforts of these young filmmakers contribute to the wealth of movies produced about media. What’s On takes a closer look at mass media through the lenses of young Kinomedia filmmakers and offers a couple of internationally recognised media-based flicks in comparison.

Pershiy Krok (First Step), (2011, UA – feature film nomination)
Where Edward Murrow in Good Night & Good Luck refused to step back from his viewpoint, the protagonist in this short film Pershiy Krok does just that, literally. Someone decides that walking backwards saves more energy and in this world of mass consumption, suddenly everyone is doing it, well almost everyone. A journalist interviews a man who was opposed to the idea but convinces him to be like everybody else, that it only takes the first step. In an additional plot line, the director traces peculiar similarities between today’s world and different periods in history. “Today a human is killed neither physically nor morally. Everyone feels so insignificant that they actually disappear. But don’t give up...just ask more questions.”

UA – cartoon nomination winner, Grand Prix)
The directors of this short film take a vox populae approach hitting the streets asking every passer-by “What’s news?” Quite often journalists are accused of not being objective enough or choosing bad topics to cover. Spravzhni Novyny proves this wrong, bringing the truth to the screen.
Reporters constantly look to tell the truth when gathering information for future publication or broadcast. But the “truth” is what you believe and one person’s “truth” may be different to another’s. Looking at three takes of the same story, a reporter sees how varied coverage is of one situation, and asks where is the objectivity? W

Videocracy (2009, SE, IT, UK, DK, FI) The door to objectivity is closed when the prime minister of a country widens his scope of power to controlling television. This documentary film takes a close look at “Berlusconismo” – the phenomenon of the influence Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had over television in Italy. A song from Berlusconi’s election campaign Thank God for Silvio used as a soundtrack to the film only proves that here democracy is substituted for “videocracy”. All the President’s Men (1976, US) While researching a story about a botched 1972 burglary of Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex, Washington Post reporters/rivals Woodward (Robert Redford) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) stumble on a possible connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Woodward and Bernstein “follow the money” all the way to the top of the Nixon administration. Based on Washington Post journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's coverage of the Watergate scandal.

The director takes quite a satirical approach to illustrate how much people are fed up with TV’s mass-produced content. But how can you get revenge? The main character comes up with a “flushing” design for his TV-set.

’Tis the Season
Christmas is more about anticipation than the actual day itself. Across Europe, celebrations begin when the first Christkindlmarkt or Christmas markets open – weeks or even a month before the big day. This quasi-historical festive romp of a German Christmas is now a staple on Ukraine’s calendar of annual events. What’s On samples the festive fare.
T
hey fill cities and towns with Christmas magic, featuring colourful wooden stalls, glimmering lights, fantastic decorations, the spicy aroma of glühwein, or mulled wine, and whet citizen’s appetites for feasting and being merry. And they get bigger and better every year in Ukraine with more and more Christmas markets opening across the country. Let’s take a walk around some of them...
kyiv christkindlmarkt Of course, when it comes to Christmas markets, the capital of Ukraine offers plum picking. This year the Christmas market to be set up in Kyiv’s centre is ‘gonna be’ (as officials promise) nothing short of a fabulous event that will rival (well, that remains to be seen) seasonal fairs in other parts Europe. The event will take in two parts of the centre. In the first, at least 100 vendor booths will encircle the centre. Designed in Ukrainian style, they will spread along Kyiv’s main drag, Khreshchatyk Street, from Maidan Nezalezhnosti, to Besarabska Square, up Shevchenko Boulevard (the promenade part), take in Opera House Square, as well as Sophiivska, My khailivska and Trinity squares (Olimpiysky Stadium). The market will open from 14 December to 20 January. Apart from numerous souvenir kiosks selling millions of Christmas must-haves, each separate market will include huts housing both the traditional Ukrainian Did Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and his more Western rival Santa Claus – just a knock at the door and you’ll be face-toface with the big guns of the festive season

in Ukraine! Anyone interested will be able to take part in a variety of Ukrainian folk art and craft master-classes, as well as purchase handmade caramel and other marvellous sweets. More holiday specialties are promised like a skating rink, ice run and ice labyrinth to be built near the Olympic Stadium on Trinity Square. A little zoo and traditional merry-go-round will definitely add to the festive mood of children and adults.
double-act The second Kyiv Christmas market has been dubbed the Gift Arch and will unfold from 14 December to 14 January right under the People’s Friendship Arch (overlooking European
and American Santaburger. Those greedy for sweets will no doubt enjoy Spanish doughnuts, Belgian chocolates, German marzipan stollen, Italian cannolli and Viennese strudel. To wash the food down and get you warmed up, guests are offered some Scandinavian glogg and Austrian gluhwein, two variants of mulled wine. And all this fare is quite affordable – a one-dish course costs 5 hryvnias, while a combination ticket will set you back 50 hryvnias. Some food and drink will be provided free of charge, as organisers reveal, “We are now negotiating with our suppliers on that matter.” After feasting you can burn off those accumulated calories on a large 500 square metre skating rink accommodating 150 people at once. The rink will stay open around the clock and at night will offer spectacular fire shows and other performances. The Christmas market festivities will also include music concerts, pig races, showmen festivals, and master-classes with stilt-walkers, circus actors, and clowns entertaining attendees all day. To top it off, these
Wider Ukraine If you are away from the capital, you needn’t fear missing your festive fix. Lviv’s Christmas Festival will open from 10 December and run to 15 January, in the central squares of the city. Traditional drinks and meals as well as New Year gifts of all kinds will be available. On 25 December, Odesa will start its European-style Christmas market featuring 20 wooden huts erected in the very heart of the city – the legendary Deribasivska Street – selling Ukrainian souvenirs, hot spicy beer, roasted chestnuts and many other things. Vinnitsa’s exhibition Christmas Gift 2013 will run from 11 to 14 December, offering a wide range of different products, from Christmas tree ornaments to clothes and cosmetics. Chernivtsi will see the opening of the annual Christmas fair on Soborna Square on 15 December. The closing day is 20 January. Square). Some 80 vendor booths will offer Christmas decorations, ornaments, souvenirs, and handmade gifts, and organisers say the whole affair will take on a very European look. For example, the Gift Arch will welcome one and all to take part in a Christmas Food Festival and try delicacies from across the continent and across the Atlantic – French brioche, English prediction-pie, Swedish gingerbread men, Danish aebleskiver,
are the headquarters of the guy organisers have tagged as the “authentic” Santa Claus, who, along with his flying reindeer, can be found – so children are promised an unforgettable meeting with the man in the red suit. Ukraine is readying itself for celebrating Christmas and New Year holidays in style. So eat, drink and be merry compliments of the season. W

What’s Hot
I was not here during the Orange Revolution, so it’s with great excitement and not a small amount of trepidation that I am here to witness the current protests supporting Ukraine’s EU aspirations. During the last two weeks I have witnessed some awe-inspiring sights, and viewed many tragic occurrences as opposing forces battle for the soul of Ukraine. While nothing in life is black and white, it seems true that in this part of the world, everything appears more grey. Yanukovych turning his back on the EU is indeed a tragedy, but it seems his hand was forced from unwanted and unwarranted pressure from Putin. And now I can’t help wonder what support the EU is offering the country, and what pressure it is in turn putting on Putin. If any at all. Some argue that this does not compare to the Orange Revolution, because that was about overturning a fraudulent election result, and that now, Yanukovych, as the legitimately-elected president of Ukraine, is entitled to make decisions on the country’s behalf. But I would say that the Orange Revolution was only about overturning a stolen election, while this is about a stolen future for the whole country. Who is right? That’s anyone’s guess. While we can laugh with ridicule at the pathetic attempts by provocateurs to rile
up the police, and then cringe in horror at the videos of said police violently beating innocent protestors and members of the press, while completely ignoring those who perpetrated the violence against them, we have to wonder if such antics are at the behest of the government or opposing factions within it. At the same time we can cheer as several lawmakers depart the Party of Regions, but then wonder that the incredibly grey Firtash is amongst them, who is known to be the greediest of the greedy, and in turn question the apparently whiter-than-white Klitchko’s apparent links to his clan. Simply put, we are all going to be bombarded by information and misinformation over the coming weeks, and it could all get very confusing. But we should remember at the bottom of it all is a very clear choice for the people of Ukraine – we can move the country closer to European ideals of democracy, rule of law and personal freedoms, or we can turn the opposite way and become once again entrenched with Russia and its brutal autocracy where rule of law and freedom of speech are alien concepts. When we clear the dirt away, the choice is indeed black and white, and we ask the EU to support this country and its European aspirations in every way it possibly can. Neil Campbell
Kyiv Top Five With revolution in the air, the best way you can show your support is by taking to the streets en masse. Of course, as you become a revolutionary, being armed with a few rallying calls does not hurt either. Here are our top five revolutionary chants. Shout them at the top of your lungs.
5. revolyutsiya! (Revolution!) – a bit cliché, but effective. 4. ukraina tse yevropa! (Ukraine is Europe!) – stating the obvious but as long as Yanukovych and co continue to look East...
3. gan’ba! (Shame!) – Best directed at the government,
Revolution How could it not be? Ukrainians are standing up and being counted. Furious at Ukraine’s 11th-hour decision to back away from an EU integration pact in favour of closer relations with Russia, Ukrainians are taking their country back one step (and New Year tree) at a time, and we welcome it.
What’s Not
Media Attacks Crucial to ensuring the situation in Kyiv and wider Ukraine is reported to citizens and the wider world is the media. Which is why reports of reports of journalists and photographers are disturbing. The reports vary on just how many journalists have been attacked during the protests, but apparently it is more than 30. Against this background, you can’t help but admire the professionalism of Reuters photographer Gleb Garanich who kept working despite being wounded by Ukraine riot police.
heavy-handed police and provocateurs.
2. zeka het! (Down with the prisoner!) – a reference
to Yanukovych’s convict past, but can be applied to most of the members of the Rada.
Kyiv Cartoon
1. slava ukraini (Glory to Ukraine!) – the rallying call
of the nation and always met with the reply “Heroyam Slava!” (Glory to heroes!).

problems if someone had tried to drink it before getting this message.
duck soup Well, actually, it’s duck salad and then soup, but I just wanted to randomly throw in the name of the Marx Brothers’ movie for a bit of fun. The next course is salad with woodroasted duck breast, and I am looking forward to it as I like duck. But when it is placed in front of me I immediately start to moan about the portion size, especially having seen a waiter pass by with a huge pile of salad. Natasha says it’s her fault, as on the trial tasting she’d complained the portion was too large. “Nice of you to speak for all of us,” I mutter as I dig in. The dish is good. The duck is well cooked, flavoursome and tender, and the salad is light and crisp. And if you order it from the menu you’ll get a much bigger portion. The next wine from Christina’s selection is a Ukrainian Chardonnay by Esse. It’s palatable. Following quickly on from this is chestnut soup, and I have to admit I’m not looking forward to it. While I like nuts, I tend to munch on them as a snack, and am not really a fan of their inclusion in dishes. And chestnuts are not on my list of nuts I like to nibble. However, I am very pleasantly surprised. This soup served in Kanapa is excellent. It is rich and creamy, and the flavour is one I greatly enjoy. Sadly, my particular portion is not hot enough for my liking, but that’s probably due to the fact that this is a restaurant and not a banquet hall so their probably not used to serving twenty-odd portions of one dish at one time. Top marks for this soup. I will return to Kanapa for this alone.
As several of the diners at my table are put off by the fact it’s brains, there’s much more available for me they are coated in very tasty breadcrumbs, and combined with mustard and cream sauce, they make for a very tasty dish. The portion is not huge, and would not on its own satisfy my hunger, but as several of the diners at my table are put off by the fact it’s brains, there’s much more available for me. Actually, I only manage to finish one more portion. The wine now being served is a Pinot Noir from Oleg Repin. Christina informs us it is the best Ukrainian Pinot Noir she’s tried. But does that means it’s any good? Well, it’s not bad... The next course is marbled beef steak, and when it arrives it’s well presented, keeping to the cosy, rustic feel of the place. Utilising a cross section of a tree trunk as a platter, the steak sits in the middle with a light garnish around, some of which is described by the waiter as Ukrainian Earth. I’m informed of what it actually is, but as it’s a secret of the house I can’t tell you here. The steak is well-cooked, succulent and juicy. It’s perhaps a little lacking in “marbling” but it’s very good nonetheless. And this time round, everyone finishes their portion! The Esse Cabernet Sauvignon complements the dish well.
dessert before we desert all beef and no brains Finally, the dish arrives that will satisfy my hunger – fried veal brains! As I said before, I’ll try anything, and I’m not at all put off by what part of the animal I am eating. So as soon as the plate is put in front of me, I dig in. Brains don’t have much flavour, and the texture may not be to everyone’s liking, but in Kanapa,

Last up is, of course, dessert, which is described as Ukrainian cheesecake with berry jelly. When it arrives in front of me it resembles a mushroom, with the cheesecake serving as a thick stalk and the jelly serving as the...well, the mushroom bit. For our American friends it should be pointed out that the jelly is indeed jelly and not jam – I believe you would call it Jello.
The cheesecake itself is of a very high quality, and the jelly has a good berry flavour. For me, without a sauce, it’s a little dry, but it serves well to finish off the meal, especially when accompanied by a glass of the Riesling from earlier, which Christian has somehow managed to get served to us again. All in all, I am impressed with Kanapa’s homey ambience and adventurous spirit. It is these things Ukraine was built on, and from a culinary point of view, Kanapa captures the essence of the country very well. W
