What’s Up Change of Leadership Demanded from Olympians A Successful Summer of Sport
We’re rounding off what has been a summer of pleasing performances in the sporting arena – think of Andriy’s bullet headers against Sweden, Vasyl Lomachenko giving his opponent what some described as a ‘right pasting’, en route to his Olympic boxing gold, and now, the Ukrainian Paralympic team finishing a fabulous fourth at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The final day of competition saw slight heartbreak as Russia edged Ukraine out 1-0 to take the 7-a-side football gold; however, the silver nudged Ukraine ahead of Australia in the final rankings. And, those scores on the doors? Thirty-two gold, twenty-four silver and twenty-eight bronze, so that’s 84 medals heading back here to Ukraine on their triumphant bearers. Add these to the six gold, five silver and nine bronze of the Olympics earlier, and Ukraine’s ultimately unsuccessful but respectable showing in EURO 2012, and we can see a Ukraine which can look into a sporting future beyond a (long) retired Serhiy Bubka, and a (recently) retired Andriy Shevchenko. Can Ukraine ever host the Olympics itself is a question for that future, for now, but let’s say a huge What’s On well done to the 155 Ukrainian athletes who participated at the 14th Paralympics!
Get Checked!
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the world’s largest global AIDS organisation, and official anti-AIDS centres here in Ukraine are organising a massive drive for free HIV testing among people in the capital. Test centres on wheels, capable of administering and producing fast and effective results, will be working every day 18.00 – 22.00 on weekdays and 16.00 – 22.00 on weekends from 11 – 20 September. The last time a drive such as this one took place here in Ukraine was in May this year, and nearly a 1,000 were smart enough to get checked. Look out for mobile labs, which will be temporarily set up in different areas around town, such as trade centres, parks and other oft-visited locales. For more information, visit http://health.unian.net/rus/detail/238288.

Returning from a successful summer of competitive sports in London last month, athletes held nothing back at a press conference last Thursday, demanding that the President of the Ukrainian Athletic Federation be dismissed. “This man (Valeriy Borzov) cannot continue to be the president of the Athletic Federation. Over the 16 years of his tenure, he has not created a single new base. He has not once said hello to us. He is an honoured man, but believes that he has achieved everything in sport, and owes nothing to anybody. We do not want to work under his direction,” said Ukrainian sprinter and Olympic bronze medalist, Elizaveta Bryzghina.
Apparently, a considerable sum of money had been assigned to the preparation of the Olympic National Team, which should have included the training centre in Svyatoshyn. It did not make it to its final destination, however – surprise, surprise. Angered at their treatment, about 100 athletes have signed a complaint letter, which has since been handed over to Ravil Sfiullin, Head of the State Service of Youth and Sports. It was a rather gutsy move, considering that they were all subsequently threatened with expulsion from important sports events for criticising the leadership and staff of the Federation. Forced to make due with dirty and torn carpets in their fitness rooms, no mats and dangerous training simulators, plumbing systems that did not always work and a constant smell of mould and urine, anyone interested in seeing the conditions the Ukrainian Olympic Team were made to prepare in can contact the 1+1 television channel for their coverage of the training base.
Protests Against Censorship of TVi
Passenger Gets Smacked for Stash
Brokedown Palace is one of those movies that scared the bejeezus out of just about every teenager who’s ever travelled to Asia; the premise of which sees guards taking one of the protagonists off to serve a 66-year jail sentence after finding a few kilos of drugs unknowingly hidden in her suitcase. Clearly then, anyone who would deliberately stash any illegal substance in their baggage has either never watched this underwhelming Hollywood flick or is just really, really stupid. Whatever the story is for Pakistan-born Ukrainian Makbul Khan, he was taken into custody over the weekend at Karachi Airport in Pakistan, for 1kg of fine heroin concealed in his suitcase and in the sole of his shoe. Leaving for Donetsk on FlyDubai, the passenger was apparently unable to “satisfactorily reply to the Customs’ questioning”, said one of the Customs officials. Makbul, a doctor by profession, was arrested and is awaiting prosecution, and will very likely be choosing a different airline the next time he opts to smuggle drugs out of Pakistan.
Journalists and supporters of one of Ukraine’s few independent TV channels, TVi, rallied on Saturday to protest against what they see as censorship by President Yanukovych and his government. TVi is well known for its investigative journalism (something there’s sadly not enough of in Ukraine) and for its oft critical stance on Yanukovych and his cronies, which is the reason the channel believes it is being persecuted. TVi was the subject of a raid by the tax police last year, and while the subsequent case against the channel’s chief executive has since been dropped, journalists claim cable companies have come under pressure to either move the channel to more expensive packages or drop it all together, significantly reducing its availability to the general public. “There are only a few TV stations left like TVi, which has dared to provide balanced coverage of the situation in Ukraine,” Yuriy Lukanov, head of the country’s independent journalists’ union, told Reuters at the rally on Saturday. “The authorities don’t like this. They prefer simple propaganda channels. That’s why they’re doing all they can to shut this channel down.” Some cable companies have already moved the channel from their basic package to more expensive ones, which is a strong indicator TVi’s claims of persecution are well founded. It’s hardly surprising as the elections loom closer, but sad all the same.

Ukraine’s Bid for an Oscar
Ukraine is sending film Firecrosser as our official nominee this year, in the category of Best Movie in a Foreign Language, to the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The movies tells the story of Soviet pilot Ivan, who is taken into German custody, to be imprisoned by the Soviets, finally escaping and immigrating to Canada, where he becomes the leader of a tribe of Native Americans. There were two Ukrainian films competing for this prestigious nomination this year, the second being Eva Neyman’s House With A Turret. While a fantastic screen adaptation of Friedrich Gorenstein’s story of the same name, Firecrosser proved to be more suited to mass audiences. Appearing on the big screen at the beginning of this year, it was extremely well received, breaking records throughout Ukraine in attendance and box office returns. Now it’s time for The Academy to consider whether or not it’s worthy of international acclaim. Keep your eye out in January to see whether or not it makes the mark.
Council of Europe Concerned About Isolation of Ukraine
Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, turned up in Kyiv on Monday, and after the most diplomatic of starts, where he praised the Ukrainian government for the implementation of reforms, he got down to business. First of all he stated that two articles in the new Criminal Code of Ukraine should be revised in light of the criminal proceedings against Tymoshenko. “Keeping in mind the case against Yulia Tymoshenko, I think that the Ukrainian Criminal Code should be revised again – I mean in particular articles 364 and 365 of the

Whether Kyiv’s City Administration took their cue from the dreadful way in which the National Olympic Committee treated our national Olympic team this year, or they’ve found a surplus in the budget, or they simply want to get a head start on next year’s international water balloon fest, they’ve recently opened a brand new open-air ‘water stadium’ here in the capital. Finding itself on the Obolon waterfront, the stadium has been built to hold kayak and canoe races, canoe polo games and other rowing competitions. With city money paying for 52 sportboats, 38 kayaks, 30 dinghies, 20 catamarans and other basic equipment for water sports, this is only the first part of the project. The second part will open in the spring of 2013, and includes a 1,000m rowing track with nine lanes. Cutting the ribbon with a high-spirited speech, Popov painted the capital of Ukraine as a professional and sports-minded city. Having co-hosted EURO 2012 this summer, putting in bids for future Olympics, and offering services and activities free of charge to kids at the new stadium, perhaps we are indeed becoming one.

Khortytsya Island in the Zaporizhya region becomes a national cultural reserve. As the biggest island in the Dnipro, Khortytsya maintains huge historic significance, having incorporated the Zaporizhska Sich, a territory which played host to the glorious army of Ukrainian Cossacks of the 15th – 18th centuries.

code,” Jagland said. “I would like to repeat what I have said earlier: politicians should be responsible for the decisions they made. But this should be done by the parliament and voters of Ukraine during elections.” He then went on to say that Ukraine was in danger of becoming isolated from the international community. “The international partners are concerned about the fact that Ukraine may face isolation if it fails to implement democratic reforms.” He added that the international community would scrutinise the upcoming parliamentary elections, saying that they would play a key role in Ukraine’s international reputation. So, we can all rest assured, Mr Jagland included, that Ukraine’s international reputation will go down the toilet and the country will become isolated. That’s good news.

No matter, just be glad he’s here, after all this is the man who brought you Loca People, and who has gigged with such monsters as Christina Aguilera. You can expect some club-style sounds, mixed in with a bit of fiesta flair, all from one of the progenitors of Moguda dance music. Tickets are 100 – 500hrv. For more information call 288-5069.

Frivo-love
Frivolous (Canada, electro), SkyArtCafe (V Vasylkivska/Baseina 1/3-2)
15 September at 22.00
To understand Frivolous, it may help to imagine Bob Dylan having gone electric and started making four-four beats, or Tom Waits sparking off techno fusion. Jeff Buckley on the bus, having a biscuit made of pure electricity. That kind of thing. Or maybe you should save your imagination and come along to see this Canadian native, who grew up studying classical music, fell in love with punk and went on to become one of the globe’s top electro DJs. He augments the DJ’s art though with his own bespoke instruments, live performance and performance art even. Sounds pretty sweet to us! Wake Up
Spring Awakening (‘childhood tragedy’ premier in Ukrainian and German with simultaneous rolling script translation), L Ukrainka Russian Drama Theatre (B Khmelnytskoho 5)
15 – 20 September at 20.00
Presented in cooperation with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Lesi Ukrainky Drama Theatre premieres Spring Awakening, a play by well-known dramatist, Frank Wedekind. Criticising the sexually oppressive culture of 19th century Germany, the play explores a rather sensitive topic – puberty. It is a production that seems especially pertinent to this area too, as anyone will tell you that the Soviet Union went without sex for years! In addition, the educational and psychological components inherent in Wedekind’s seminal work target everyone who has ever gone through the trauma that is adolescence. Featuring both German and Ukrainian actors, the piece will no doubt prove interesting. Tickets are 50hrv. For more information call 234-4223/5087. : What's On Recommended

B
efore speaking to Pablo Amargo I search the web for his works and am amazed at the different associations, connotations and implications his art-works have – take for instance a knife in the shape of a shark, or a group of people all blowing one trumpet and so on – retelling doesn’t do them justice though, much better to see them yourself. After flipping through Amargo’s albums, I understand why he says: “Book illustration today refuses to be just a part of a book, it longs to be a book itself.” For Amargo, that’s certainly the case, as his albums of illustrations are very successful in their own right, and have already been conferred countless prestigious awards – his last edition, entitled Casualidad, won several prizes – in Finland and Korea, to name just two.
Amargo’s Associations
As professional illustrator, Pablo Amargo has been working since 1990, featuring in daily press, magazines, and books for children and adults alike. The story of this love for illustrations began long before that, when as a child, Pablo once saw an illustrated book and was sure he had already seen it – in a previous life, probably, admits the artist. So there was no hesitation as to which profession to choose. However, before the unique and inimitable drawing style of Amargo was formed, Pablo worked ex-
33.indb 14
tensively in package design for different products. “Hard work and persistence had called out for something sincere and interesting,” says Pablo, commenting on his style. The illustrated book is for Pablo, a chance to measure his own talent: “Text is not a limitation, it’s always a challenge. All art is born from similar concepts. I think talent is the skill of recreating something we first thought was preventing us from flying. There is no dilemma for me as to what is more important – the text or the illustration. It’s about these two things interacting with each other,” the artist tells.
The Artist’s Muse
Periodical press illustration is something implying irony and cynicism, I had always thought, but Amargo says he uses the same abstract, general, universal ideas both in press and books. Staying away from political scandals and social calamities, Pablo Amargo calls for “a smile of mind”: “I love to put dual meanings out there, subtexts, paradoxes. It’s always a chance for me to investigate the image, so my illustrations are kind of exercises for the mind,” explains Pablo. In addition to the exhibition of works by Amargo, the artist is also going to give a lecture on the art of illustration in Kyiv, and show some audiovisual materials portraying the stages of illustration creation – from pencil and paper to many hours of work and thinking. I’m always particularly keen on knowing how exactly the idea or a certain image is born, so I dare to ask what influences the imagination of the artist. “I can spend a day without listening to music, reading a newspaper or even talking,” reflects Pablo, but, “I can’t force myself from looking at images! The world around us is full of images, so each day brings me an eclectic stimulation of new and amazing visual spectacles. Looking at the works of other artists I experience a real euphoria, so I want to create new images which evoke a similar feeling.” Pablo also illustrates children’s books, but don’t expect that to mean he ‘dumbs down’ – his illustrations for kids are as meaningful and open to interpretation as those for adults. Amargo admits the sternest critic for him is a paperbin: “When I see the drawing is coming out bad, I throw it away and start from the very beginning.” That probably encapsulates the recipe for a successful and perfect piece of art. Take a look yourself, and let your brain smile!

British-residing multinational group, Transglobal Underground, played to crowds in the thousands this summer, at the annual Art Pole Ethno Festival in Unizh just a couple of months ago. This November, the band will be back in Ukraine, with support from our own Dakha Brakha, Port Mone, Belorussia’s Khmeleva Project and Poland’s Volosi. As each of these groups are frequently seen at international festivals around the continent, each with their very own and distinct ethno, fusion and folk styles, you can be sure of the biggest ethno show of the season. Tickets are 150 – 750hrv. For more information call 222-8040.
One of the world’s most famous drummers, Modern Drummer Hall of Famer and Modern Drummer Magazine 26-award holder, Mike Portnoy, is coming to Kyiv with his Supergroup. The term “supergroup” appeared readily in the late 60s, meaning a rock group made up of musicians already popular for their work in other bands. This particular group is made up of bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Mr Big, Niacin), guitarist Tony Macalpine (popular for his multiple solo projects) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper) and of course, drummer Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Neal Morse). Theres bound to be something for all. Take it in. Tickets are 350 – 600hrv. For more information call 424-2555.

UKRAINA CINEMA New Hollywood blockbuster, The Bachelorette, tells the story of three bridesmaids on an adventure of a lifetime. Premiering here in Ukraine on 6 September, it’s being marketed as a chick flick, which would explain the overt number of females out this evening to catch a glimpse of it.

Take Me Out!
Perfect
or Par
Not unlike the country’s Revisor critic we have on the sofa this week, What’s On too does its own weekly inspection in restaurants throughout the city. This week, Parfait got a going-over. Opened recently not far from Lva Tolstoho square, it calls itself a French/ Italian restaurant serving up provincial charm. Is it indeed what the French call perfect?
W
alking down Antonovycha (Horkoho) one evening with my husband, I notice a new restaurant recently opened. The windows glow with warm light spilling out onto the street, revealing a smart interior. Like clockwork, it starts to rain, and the wind throws the doors wide open. We look at each other and cannot help but acknowledge the sign.
French Flair
Walking in, there are two halls to this venue. One is big and richly decorated in tones of

green and yellow, housing a huge wall painting. The other is smaller and better suited to private functions. It is indeed light and pleasant enough, even for all the lace and plastic flowers. Catching the table settings though, I am drawn back in – featuring huge plates with sparkling wine glasses, we take our places on comfortable couches lining a mirrored wall. With menus in hand, I immediately appreciate the moderately-priced offerings on hand, and identifying itself as a French/Italian venue, I am not surprised by a number of the classics, such as Caesar (65hrv) and Capreze (60hrv) salads on the list of cold starters. For those
who appreciate a more substantial start to a meal, they’ve got a chicken liver salad (60hrv) or one dressed with veal and blue cheese (95hrv). Among other specialties there is a duo of tuna and grape leaves (75hrv), beef carpaccio with mushrooms (70hrv), foie gras terrine with grilled toasts (65hrv) and Mediterranean mussels (145hrv). I decide to break my rule of always starting with a salad and opt for a hot starter – baked asparagus, while my husband orders the Nicoise salad (80hrv). Here, there is also a good variety of soups – seafood soup with tuna (75hrv), onion soup au gratin (40hrv), green pea soup (40hrv) and Minestrone (40hrv). As a critical connoisseur of soups, the last option is the one Dmytro goes for.
Italian Ingenuity
Helping ourselves to a couple of refreshments, we proceed to look at the main dishes, which I can tell have a more Italian flair. Pasta, pizza and risotto take up three pages of the menu, with some of the more popular Mediterranean
