This Week in History Lost in Time

Over the last two months, deputies of the Verkhovna Rada have been trying to decide what time Ukrainians should march to. Overlooking the musical 2/4 rhythm typical for such a swagger, they jumped onto the Russian bandwagon which cancelled the adjustment of clocks come the characteristic spring and fall changeover. The hullabaloo surrounding the whole event came from Ukrainian journalists wanting to be on the same time with Moscow. Apart from pecking at the heads of many a Ukrainian governor, however, there was no serious discussion about it. That is, until this September. Deciding that it was actually a good idea, the Party of Regions had Health Minister Oleksandr Anishchenko spout the inherent health risks found within the clock-changing system. Speaking before doing any thinking at all (a professional hazard of the current ruling party), they realised that perhaps 09.00 and 10.00 were a little late in the day for sunrise. As this would have been the case for many parts of Western Ukraine, the solution was to have those respective regions begin their working day later than the rest of the country. Good solution guys! Reconsidering that this might not be the most effective way to handle the situation, parliament was called back and 295 deputies voted in favour of ‘winter time’. Acknowledging they may have made a slight error in judgement, you can now be sure – at least for the time being – that we’ll be putting our clocks back by one hour come this Friday 30 October.

1 November 1927

The first official day of Kyiv’s football club, Dynamo. Helped throughout the years by the legendary Valeriy Lobanovsky, it has competed against Shakhtar Donetsk almost every year for the league title since its existence, proving itself to be one of the strongest Ukrainian teams around.

3 November 1927

The Soviets shoot nearly 100 Ukrainian intellectuals in the Solovky camp. Among them are prominent are Ukrainian theatre director Les Kurbas and famous Ukrainian writer Mykola Kulish.

Ukrainian Christmas 29 October 1987 at the Vatican Trees from the western part of the country will stand tall and proud in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican for Christmas this year, as Ukraine has been chosen to deck out the official residence of the Pope! Selected and ready to travel over two thousand kilometres in order to arrive a month before the blessed event, the trees did go through a strict screening process in order to be considered, including a minimum height of 30 metres. There was tough competition there for awhile, but a fir found deep in the heart of the Carpathians surpassed all of the expectations of judges. Receiving a full round of tens, it was selected and will be decorated with ornaments traditional to Ukraine (another requirement) no doubt making it the talk of the town around St Peter’s Square. As a tradition first started by Pope John Paul II in 1982, this is the first time Ukraine has been granted the honour. All together now: Timber!

Please Drive Carefully

The Ministry of Emergencies has released information regarding a car crash that killed eight people on 23 October in the Poltava region. A passenger car collided with a trailer truck parked on the side of the road at about 23.50 Sunday night killing all eight in the car instantly and sending the truck driver to hospital. Police are calling this the worst collision in the region’s history but have yet to release the details or the cause. With so many road works taking place in the country at the moment, What’s On would like to take a moment to ask all those behind the wheel to slow down. The country needs no more bloodshed due to carelessness or neglect.

Cult band Vopli Vidoplaysova make their debut at one of Kyiv’s rock festivals. Awarded Band of the Year, they have since produced numerous albums, songs from which continuously find themselves played on radio stations throughout the country. This year will be their 25th anniversary!

28 October 1989

The Verkhovna Rada adopts a law in reference to the language of the state. Declaring the local Ukrainian tongue the country’s only official language, politicians have argued over this issue ever since, recommendations of which dance to a Russian lilt.

The Ukrainian Court System: A Well-oiled Machine

Yuriy Lutsenko, Ukrainian politician and former Minister of Internal Affairs, was charged with abuse of office in December of last year. Sitting in prison for the alleged overpayment of less than $5,000 to his driver, he went on a hunger strike in the spring of this year losing 14kg in the process. While his protruding cheekbones and the acetone found in his blood should have been a good enough reason for the world to listen to the poor man who accuses the country’s politicians of political persecution, Yulia Tymoshenko was in the spotlight stealing the show. With the gas princess back behind bars (at least for now), the Pechersk District Court is open for Lutsenko business once again. It seems the man is either a real threat to the community at large or utterly unlucky, however, as the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency (UNIAN) reports that the court has rescheduled his next case for 34 October at 09.15.

Mashina Vremeni & Voskresenie (Russia, pop-rock), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

28 October at 19.00

Bands Mashina Vremeni and Voskresenie have been successfully dictating what constitutes good Russian rock for 40 years. What’s interesting, however, is that they continue to do so, as a concert by ‘Time Machine’ here in Ukraine earlier this year well demonstrated. So as not to waste any time at all, lead singer Andriy Makarevich announced their return for later this fall, and bringing with them the ‘Sunday’ rockers, it’s going to be a marvellous show of revolutionary Soviet rock. Ukraine Travel

A City of Calm L

ike clockwork, summer’s placidity always turns into fall’s rush hour, and we’re feeling rushed more than we should. We could use a weekend away. Somewhere away from the noise, the traffic jams, the nonstop haste and even the rain. With train tickets in paw, we ready ourselves for the 14-hour trip that will take us to Zakarpattya. A smile stretches the length of my whiskers at the prospect of a little beauty sleep. Bear growls, but I know how to deal with these situations. I shove a book into his hands detailing Zakarpathian cuisine that soon has him grinning like a Cheshire cat.

A Heart-warming Welcome

On arrival, the sun is shining brightly. I’m looking forward to catching the last scraps of summer, a season that seems to have left Kyiv long ago. We head to our hotel to get the party started. Having booked a room in advance, we know our residence this weekend is imaginatively called Hotel Uzhhorod. Not too far from the train station, nor the city centre, its location couldn’t be more perfect, and it thankfully has everything we need: double bed, cable TV, air-con, telephone, hairdryer and mini-bar. The price is right too: only 439hrv! Bear hibernated on the way down, and now that he’s awake he’s hungry. I am too, so I suggest we have a nice Saturday morning breakfast somewhere in the city. Strolling into the town along the Uzh River, we come across a few fishermen who look like they’ve been lucky this morning. I’m awed by the landscape, in particular the mountain river reflecting the city’s buildings and the bridges connecting the two sides of the city. But Bear just wants to eat, so we continue our hunt for our first cup of Zakarpatthian coffee. The coffeehouses in the central streets are already as busy as ever. After mulling about, we find a cosy little place by the name of Mio. Within two minutes we’re sipping hot coffee with cinnamon and digging into hot cherry pie. The hostess chatters about in her exotic Uzhhorodian accent. I think it’s wonderful and is a brogue I myself would like to learn. I’d also like to find out how they make such delicious coffee, but Bear just laughs and says it’s time to explore the city. I leave my compliments with the girl manning the door and we’re off.

It’s October, and the summer is gone. Kitten and Bear are already tired of the city’s fuss. Kitten suggests the two fly away to a place where time stands still. “Where?” Bear asks. “Uzhhorod,” says Kitten, purring.

Accordions and White Rabbits

The first must-see is Uzhhorod Castle. Already more than 1,000-years old, both of us are eager to investigate this heroic reminder of the past. On the way to the castle, we pass the famous Christo-Vozdvyzhenskiy Cathedral. Its roots go back to 1646 and I’m enamoured. We also pass numerous brides, grooms and wedding guests clamouring about with flowers and presents. Dozens of pigeons want to know what all the fuss is about, and we even catch sight of a white rabbit. Gypsy men play the accordion and sing snappy ditties, while gypsy children throw flower petals, asking for treats in the process. As I sit listening to the music and watching this happy scene, I’m reminded of the film Black Cat, White Cat by Emir Kusturica. Amazingly, it looks exactly the same. A few minutes more and the castle is in sight. Built on the Zamkova Mountain, it’s hard to imagine the bloody fights and constant sieges that took place here. There were battles that completely destroyed the castle but they always built it back up again. The most modern fortifications were done in the 14th century, where Italian engineers were invited to give it their best shot. A palace (now a museum) appeared two centuries after that, with covert tunnels running between the two.

m

Uzhorodska is the smallest oblast of Ukraine but is the closest to the EU. It is fortytwo kilometres to the Hungarian border and just two to the Slovakian. It’s a multinational city that hosts more than 70 ethnicities such as Russians, Slovaks, Hungarians, Romanians, Jews, Romas and Germans. It is a prolific city with a number of different languages and dialects. And yet, despite such national diversity, its residents live peacefully with one another.

In keeping with this time of year, we learn something about the castle we weren’t expecting: it has a ghost! As legend has it, the ghost was the daughter of Dryget, the castle-owner. Four centuries ago, the Poles were invading and the girl fell in love with one of the soldiers. She told him how to seize the castle amid their love affair, and when her father found out he ordered that she be bricked into one of the walls. The White Lady has been trapped ever since, and is often seen floating through passages from dusk until dawn.

A Delicious Afternoon

The palace is full of interesting exhibits such as clothes, musical instruments, coins and manuscripts. We head outside to walk the grounds, and without a guide we both feel as though we are hostages of an affable maze! We find our way back through, and the yard fills with people preparing flowers and filling goblets. I ask what’s going on, and I’m told all the fuss has to do with marriage registrations. We feel as though an army of brides and grooms are chasing us, so we head over to the open-air museum, not far from the Uzhhorod Castle, where we find the peace and quiet we left the city for. Built on top of a cemetery in 1970, this territory used to be referred to as the Witches Pitfall. Today it is a Zakarpattya Village reproduction. Accommodating fifteen peasant huts, (the oldest of which is 220 years old) and one church, every building has its own guide. We walk around learning about the region’s routine and lifestyle. With all the facts and information, we almost feel as if we’ve been transported back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, the feeling doesn’t last long: more brides and grooms are heading in our direction. It’s information overload about attractions in Uzhhorod, and we’re starving; desperately in need of fuel to keep us going. Vertep has been recommended for lunch local-style. Inside, the venue is animated. The waitress suggests the bograch (a soup with pork, dumplings, vegetables and lots of paprika) but Bear opts for the chirke poprikash (chicken with dumplings and sour cream). I go for tokan with goat cheese and grits – polenta a la Zakarpattya. There are a number of dishes that we’d both like to try – they all seem savoury and striking. When the food arrives, I’m delighted with my dish and am already feigning saturtion. Bear just grunts and keeps eating. Finishing up, this time it’s me that tugs at Bear’s shirt sleeve saying, “City marvels await us!”

Uzhas in Russian means terror, horror, atrocity, even nightmare! Rest assured, there’s nothing horrible about Uzhgorod!

Take Me Out!

Kyiv: Enter if you Dare

T

here are those who say that Halloween is just for kids – for trick-or-treating, cutting turnips and dressing up. But there are those who say it is far more significant than that. They say it is the setting for supernatural encounters, for connecting with the dead, for honouring all things occult and evil. Chilling stories feed the myth and make children cry at night. Be under no illusion: this is the stuff of nightmares. And while most cities try hard to recreate such nightmarish scenes for Halloween, What’s On believes Kyiv is the perfect stage for a scare. Enter if you dare… Our сity is full of beautiful places and fantastic experiences, but at the same time there are things here so horrific that no sane person would ever dare go near them (of those that do, very few live to tell the tale). This is a twilight zone, a world between the living and the dead, the sane and the insane, the decent and the decrepid. With torturous scenes of vivid lucidity, only the incredibly brave or mentally unstable would consider these things, especially at this time of year. Yet some Kyivites fall into these categories, and for those most foolhardy of souls, What’s On has prepared a list of the top attractions this Halloween. ZHEK (Housing Office) A labyrinthine layout of endless corridors, here be lines of the living-dead. They queue for hours, clutching papers, documents and the tail-end of hope. Empty eyes meet with soulless scourges whose official titles belie their true function of sucking efficiency from the system as though it were blood from a neck. Those unwitting enough to enter are trapped in their toil. They feel like the Greek mythological character Sisyphus, who was punished by being made to roll a boulder up a mountain, only to then watch as it fell back down, before starting the process again. Hospitals These Kyiv institutions have heard the cries of pain, hurt, illness and anguish, and harbour their memories in tepid green paint, cold walls and blinking lights. Medical equipment stands idle in the halls, surrealist paintings stare down at children from the walls, and hospital staff feed off the fear of the waiting room mortals. No wonder Ukrainians choose not to go to the doctor unless they really need to. Only the bravest would enter this Halloween. Public Toilets For those wishing to experience the dread and despair of the darkest imaginations, Ukrainian public toilets are the place to be. The dank smell of death and disease will arrest your respiratory system and erase any notion of rationality. As your life flashes before your eyes, you will catch

39.indb 18

sight of the other world: that of eternal punishment in putrid prisons, longing for a life of fresh air and flowers. Not even the dead would survive in here. Enter at your own peril. Fast Food Bars Travel to the districts of Svyatoshyn, Tarasa Shevchenka or Lybidska and you will come across fast food kiosks. Despite the pretence of sanitation certificates, these are hell’s own outlets: a breeding ground of disease, decrepitude and diarrhoea. The cockroaches are faster than most of the food, and coins are known to be among their surprise ingredients. On Halloween, we can think of no nastier trick than this one. Khrushchevka The living dead may be so-called either because they are in a transitory state of zombification, or because they haven’t had enough sleep. Those living in Khrushchevkas could well fall into the latter category (although best to destroy their brains by smashing their heads in, just in case). These small apartments have problems with water, heating and amenities, but the worst aspect of Khrushchevka-living is the noise of the neighbours that comes thick and fast from every corner. It’s driven them all mad, and upon entering, you see the results. Soulless figures wondering aimlessly, forever searching for the sources of the noise, they have long-since taken leave of their senses, so watch out. Attraction Parks Screams of terror, haunting howls, anguished cries… Ukraine’s attraction parks are perfect for Halloween. But unlike most other cities, where the cries are of adrenalin-based excitement, our parks induce the real thing: spine-tingling torment, as your chances of safety dive like the big dipper. Bumper cars turn into a race for life, Ferris wheels into a raffle drum lottery, roller-coasters into a rickety rail-road to ruin. Corpse-like operators throw dials and switches and cautionto-the-wind. Maintenance is a quaint concept. This Halloween, there can be few better places in which to test the bounds of life, and look death in the face. The Marshrutka The city’s yellow buses often seem hitched to hell’s own horses. Rides teach you to value both life and cars. In the summer, they’re like saunas, and in the winter, they’re like arctic wastelands. Often they’re so crowded that your every orifice serves to accommodate another passenger. Despite their exterior innocence, these four-wheeled coffins will scare even the hardiest soul. Step inside, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Barber Shops Combine carelessness and a lack of attention with a pair of sharp scissors and other implements that can do harm, and this is the perfect experience for those wishing to scare the living daylights (or highlights) out of themselves. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Kyiv Life Jazz For Business

HYATT On 18 October the Chamber organised the next event in a series of highlevel business networking events – a meeting of the Business Leaders League. The theme was jazz, and enlisting the help of some fine music from Red Fox, the evening united over 100 top managers. As yet another opportunity for Chamber Members to strengthen their contacts and expand their business network, the ACC seem to know what the industry needs. ARIZONA BBQ Ukraine does enjoy the German tradition of Oktoberfest, perhaps even a little too much! But when you think about it, how can anyone say no to beer, sausage and lederhosen?! In fact, it’s one of the reasons DWK (the German Business Club in Kyiv) put together this little shindig this 18 October. Sending out invitations to one and all, those who missed out on the merrymaking in Munich were able to enjoy almost the same event right here in Kyiv. Held in an easy-going atmosphere with lots of Bavarians in attendance, the Mega-Life Band kept everyone on their feet doing the schuhplattling dance all night long.

As tradition dictates, festival head Andriy Khalpkhchi handed out the first award – the Scythian Deer – to eminent screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov for his outstanding contribution into the world of cinema. After the official part of the evening was over, guests watched Battle of Warsaw 1920 by the prominent Polish director Jerzy Hoffman.
