July, 2023
As I write this article, it’s been a trying season thus far for many of the golf professionals in our Section. Volatile weather has caused issues at clubs throughout the Section, none more so than in Vermont over the past few weeks. Torrential rainfall has led to widespread flooding, not only of golf facilities and clubs, but of homes throughout the state. Our golf professionals in the Vermont chapter are a resilient bunch, passionate not only for their golf, but for their state in general, and I know that they will once again lead the charge back for the Green Mountain State.
The fraternal nature of our association, at the chapter, section and national levels, has never been more obvious nor more appreciated by those that are part of it. This I can speak to on a personal level after we experienced a fire
that closed our clubhouse at Kirkbrae back in May. The outpouring of text messages, phone calls, emails, etc. from the members of our association was amazing and, quite honestly, heartwarming…and I apologize if I didn’t return yours as it’s been a crazy couple of months. But nothing compared to what our brothers and sisters in Vermont are currently going through.
I’ve been so fortunate to serve in the governance of our section in some shape or form for more than the past decade between the section and chapter level. And throughout this time, I’ve spoken to hundreds of PGA professionals about our association and, as you’ve probably heard me say numerous times, “What can the PGA do for you?” Well, all the programming and tournaments and education (and the list can go on and on…) that we showcase at meetings and in communications are great—and mean a lot to all of us. But in my opinion, nothing--actually,
top the camaraderie and fraternal bond this game and our association provides us all.
Over the coming weeks, we here in the New England Section are going to try and formalize this “network” with a section-sponsored mentoring program. Whether you’re a grizzled vet or brand-new to the business, part of Gen Z or a Baby Boomer—everyone can use someone to talk to or bounce things off from time to time and everyone can also lend a helping hand (or ear) from time to time for their fellow professional. So keep your eyes peeled for the email invitation and make sure you sign-up.
The moral of the whole story, from my situation to the case of our affected Vermont professionals to the mentoring program, is that whether you know it or not, you’ve got 28,000 brothers and sisters nationwide (and 1100 just here in New England) that are ready and willing to help you with whatever you need help with. And the best part—sometimes you don’t even have to ask.But PLEASE do not hesitate to ask for help, no matter what the issue is. Our chapter, our section, our association— remember that they are ALL ours and are only as strong as the bond between all of us.
For those of you who are able, I can’t wait to see everyone here at the club for the Section Championship in September…and don’t worry—the kitchen and some the clubhouse are open again and we are looking forward to showing off some “Rhode Island Hospitality”.
Please stay safe and try to enjoy the rest of the 2023 season.
Respectfully,
Michael Bradshaw COO/Director of Golf Kirkbrae Country Club President, New England PGAThe 2023 season has seen many ups, downs, and a whole bunch in between. Other than the inconsistent weather much of New England has been dealing with, our programs and engagement have been solid. A real indicator for me is seeing a variety of NEPGA Professionals becoming involved, rather than only a few carrying the torch.
Section and chapter participation are very strong, which has increased purses and made for some very happy partners. On a recent Monday in July the NEPGA was conducting six events throughout the Section. Well over 200 NEPGA Professionals tee’d it up that day, over 200 junior golfers and over 300 amateurs participated in those NEPGA events. The Section staff, Chapter staff and interns have done an amazing job navigating the busy New England golf season. Kudos to each of them for all their hard work making NEPGA programs the best they can be. The dues deadline is behind us, and the staff and board continue to find ways to bring value to your membership and provide programs that will enhance your ability to be the best PGA Professional you can be!
The scholarship deadlines have passed, and we are excited about the number of applicants we received. Fundraising efforts continue to increase, and we are hoping to distribute more scholarship dollars to more deserving students than ever before! Many of which are family members of NEPGA Professionals.
The New England PGA Foundation (PGA REACH New England) is running on all cylinders. We were very excited to have a New England team at the Secretary's Cup, which took place in Rochester, NY right before the PGA Championship. All our PGA HOPE Programs & our Section Operation Play Day events are sold out. We have 30 sets of clubs ready to be distributed for our Sets Fore Vets program and New England continues to lead the country with the number of PGAJL players and coaches, and all our Drive, Chip & Putt events are overflowing with participants. The lives our foundation is impacting are significant.
The Rounds Fore Reach Auction hit an all-time high ($49,000), the Reach Classic was a huge success and Birdies 2 Benefit will hopefully have more NEPGA Professionals than ever at Andover CC in August. The NEPGA branded Credit Card continues to be strong, and our foundation trustees are engaging to help connect our Foundation with potential partners/donors.
We are approaching our one-year anniversary in our Section Headquarters, and it has been an amazing first year. I really do hope that every Section Member can one day come to visit us at our new home!
The National Awards deadline has passed, and we have submitted NEPGA Professionals to be considered for National Awards. Our Foundation has also applied for the Herb Graffis Award for the first time. We have so many deserving NEPGA Professionals that I am hopeful a few will be strongly considered.
The Sections Major Championships are quickly approaching, so be sure to join us for your Chapter Championship, Assistants Championship and of course our crown jewel, the NEPGA Championship. Help us to continue having national bragging rights for the largest Section Championship in the country!
The staff is working hard on your behalf, and I am proud of all their efforts. I hope each of you all are having a wonderful season so far, and I ask you to engage in your Section/Chapter where you can, and if either myself or any of your talented NEPGA Staff can ever be of service, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Respectfully,
Michael J. Higgins Executive DirectorThe 103rd NEPGA Section Championship is set for Tuesday, September 5th through Thursday, September 7th at Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, R.I. and Agawam Hunt Club in Rumford, R.I. The Women's Championship will be held from September 5th through the 6th.
This is Kirkbrae's first time playing co-host to the NEPGA Section Championship while Agawam Hunt makes its second appearance. Agawam Hunt co-hosted the NEPGA Section Championship in 1998 with Ledgemont Country Club.
Nestled in the beautiful Blackstone Valley, Kirkbrae is a par 72 championship golf course that offers fun and challenging play to everyone. Kirkbrae was originally designed in 1960 by renowned architect Geoffrey Cornish. Over the years Kirkbrae evolved Cornish's work – continually improving the course. Today, Kirkbrae is considered one of the best golf courses in New England.
Agawam Hunt is a private sporting club located on 130 wooded, riverside acres in Rumford, RI, just over the river from Providence's East Side. Officially founded in 1897 as a fox hunting club, the Club is known as an exceptional sporting Club in Southern New England.
Agawam's course has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The first golf course was designed and built in 1895 by Willie Park, Jr. of Musselburgh, Scotland. It was originally a 9 hole course.
The first full size 18 hole course was designed by Donald James Ross in 1920. The former Metacomet Golf Course was purchased by Agawam at that time and there have been many renovations over the years.
Closes August 16th at 5p.m. REGISTRATION
It has been a great stretch for the Cape Cod Chapter with three events having taken place in late May/early June, and a fourth on the schedule for June 29th at Allendale CC.
First on the docket was the Hyannisport Club Pro-Pro on May 24th with 28 teams of New England PGA Professionals playing for the title Two teams separated themselves from the pack; the duos of Ed Kirby (The Aquidneck Club) & Frank Leja and Gregg Richbourg & Zack Sweet (Cape Cod National GC) each shot 6-under 65 to share the victory. The Chapter would like to say a huge thank you to our partners for this event, Baxter’s Boathouse, Callaway Golf, and My Home Course! Click HERE to check out the drone footage from My Home Course!
Next up for the Cape Chapter was the Pro-Am at Miacomet Golf Course on Nantucket! This was the first of two events to be held at Miacomet this season, as the Chapter will return for the 34th Annual Island Classic in October. The Miacomet Pro-Am utilized stableford scoring which had players hoping to shoot the high score for the day, a rarity in golf
In the team game, Ocean’s Edge and PGA Professional Shayne Saskon were victorious accruing 102 points in the 2 BB of 4 game. Ben Egan of the Bay Club prevailed as the low professional finishing with a total of 45 points. The Chapter would like to thank Miacomet & Mike Haberl, PGA!
Finally, the Chapter visited White Cliffs CC for the annual Cape Cod Chapter Pro-Lady Championship on June 15th. The fantastic field of 22 teams began their round with cloudy skies, but ultimately the sunshine prevailed revealing stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Richie Hasenfus and his teammates from Needham Golf Club prevailed in the 1 BB of 4 Gross contest shooting a winning score of 7-under 55. The 1 BB of 4 Net division ended in a tie between Hyannis Golf Club led by PGA Professional Jesse Schectman, and The Club at New Seabury led by Brady Nash. Both teams played great rounds, finishing with a net score of 8-under 54 to split the victory. Frank Leja, of The Club at New Seabury captured the individual professional title recording a score on 1-over 63.
The Massachusetts Chapter is also excited to host it’s 2nd Annual Scholarship Pro-Am on Wednesday, June 28th at Foxborough Country Club All proceeds from the event will benefit the Massachusetts Chapter Scholarship fund. The Chapter’s scholarship benefits children and step-children of Massachusetts Chapter Professionals and was awarded for the 1st time in in 2022 to six worthy recipients.
The New Hampshire Chapter’s strong Pro-Am schedule continued in June as it held three events in June, the first coming at Canterbury Woods on June 5th. In the pro contest Jason Malcolm of Nashua, who hasn’t played in an event in over a year, came in with a 2under par, 70, to take 1st place. Austin Baker of Souhegan Woods (playing in his first event) and Mitch Jefferson of Rochester each shot 1-under 71’s to tie for 2nd place Matt Arvanitis of SNHU shot an even par-72 and ended up in solo 4th place. Dan Gillis of Nabnassett Lake, Chris Houston of Laconia, Matt Delois of About Golf, Todd Rollins of Laconia, and Jay Pollini of Ridgewood all shot 2-over 74’s to tie for 5th place
Next up was the Stonebridge CC ProAm which saw its own Sam Cody shoot a 6-under 66 to take the top spot. Cody made 4 birdies and an eagle with no bogeys to post that impressive score Brett Smestad of Rochester came in at 2-under 70 to end up in 2nd place.
Keene CC hosted the last event of June, due to the postponement of the Pro-Lady on June 26th. The pro contest had Jay Pollini of Ridgewood, Sam Read of Den Brae, Taylor Stout of Nashua, and Bailey Nangle of The Vineyard all shoot even par-72’s to tie for first place
Looking ahead to July, the Chapter will be holding two Pro-Ams; July 3rd at Derryfield CC and July 17th at Windham CC. The Chapter will also be holding the Pro-Senior Championship at Pease GC on July 31st before the schedule breaks for the Chapter Championship, August 7-8 at North Conway CC.
The Rhode Island Chapter hosted two great early season events; the Pro-Pro at Sakonnet Golf Club and a Pro-Am at Agawam Hunt which served as a preview to the 2023 Section Championship.
At the Sakonnet Pro-Pro, Wollaston Golf Club’s Liam Friedman and Jeff Martin combined to shoot a score of 9-under 61 to win the tournament at the Oceanside gem. n second place was the team of Bob Tramonti (Triggs Memorial GC) and Kirk Hanefeld (Salem CC).
Tramonti and Hanefeld finished the day at 5under 65 edging out the teams of Zach Girouard & Tyler Sprague (Old Sandwich GC) and Andy Lane & Kyle Puzzo (Worcester CC) both of whom finished at 4-under 66. The Rhode Island Chapter would like to thank their partner for this event, Callaway Golf.

Situated on the golden links of the North West coast in Southport, Royal Birkdale is possibly the finest of all courses in England and has played host to The Open Championship 10 times Birkdale also hosted The Ryder Cup (1965, 1969), The Walker Cup (1951) & The Curtis Cup (1948)
Royal Lytham & St Annes is one of the premiere links courses in the World, having hosted 11 Open Championships, two Ryder Cups an numerous other major tournament including The Women's Open, The Senior Open, The Amateur Championship and the Walker Cup.
Hillside Golf Club, located just outside Liverpool City Centre, is dotted with magnificent sandhills and stunning pinewoods. The original Hillside course was founded in 1911 but it's layout has altered significantly since then, after acquiring land in 1960s it was extensively remodeled. In 2014, the club was selected to stage the Open Championship Final Qualifying for a total of four years.
The West Lancashire Golf Club, founded in 1873 in Blundellsands Liverpool, is among the ten oldest clubs in England and boasts one of the most natural and testing links found anywhere in the British Isles The course was designed by C K Cotton and is laid out on some 200 acres of land and succeeds in carrying out the ideal layout of a golf course – two loops of nine holes with the 9th and 18th greens in front of the clubhouse

During Barry Westall’s 19 years as the Head Golf Professional at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, over half of his assistants have moved on to earn Head Golf Professional positions of their own. Barry is exceptionally skilled in identifying an employee's personal and professional strengths and weaknesses. He allows them to showcase their strengths and at the same time, he works with them to help develop their deficient skills.
Those who nominated Barry say his character is patient, compassionate, honest, and respectful; all of which have led him to be outstanding
Barry has much love for the game of golf and his experiences in the sport has greatly impacted him. He strives to find opportunities to spread the same love he has for the game to others.

Before PGA HOPE existed, Spector conducted free clinics for veterans or active military on July 4th and Veteran's Day every year since becoming a PGA member. When the HOPE program was formed she could not wait to be involved.
An overwhelming amount of those who nominated Spector for the award said she has an exceptionally big heart. She is consistently generous with her time in the area of support for the military, its personnel, and veterans. On top of being involved with PGA HOPE, Spector is involved in a program called Vet to Vet in the greater Portland area which connects Veterans in need with those who can help.
Spector has inspired her assistants and other professionals that work at her facility to become PGA HOPE certified. They participate in PGA HOPE, teach private lessons to PGA HOPE graduates at discounted rates, play golf with Veterans from PGA HOPE and some have even transported HOPE graduates to events and caddied for them.

PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), the flagship military program of PGA REACH, is a rehabilitative golf program that introduces golf to Veterans to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. PGA HOPE offers golf through a developmental, six- to eightweek curriculum taught by PGA Professionals trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency All programs are funded by PGA REACH and supplemented by PGA Section foundations, so the cost of programming is free to all Veterans
For Monday’s main event, 12 teams from across the country, consisting of one PGA Professional and four military Veterans who have participated in the PGA HOPE program, competed in a spirited 9-hole match, as part of 2023 PGA Championship Community Relations activities for PGA REACH.
PGA HOPE New England captured the inaugural The Journey Award, recognizing the importance of the overall journey. Jo-Anna Krupa, a PGA Professional at Belmont Country Club in Massachusetts, who serves as an instructor for the PGA HOPE Program in the New England PGA Section, participated alongside the first-ever team consisting of all-women Veterans: Nancy O’Reilly (Navy); Sue Hall (Army); Megan Sullivan (Army); Liseth Velez (Air Force).
The New England PGA Junior Tour is back for 2023 and it is better than ever! With over 150 events running throughout the summer, junior golf is booming across New England! Membership for the TOUR which includes kids from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island has reached over 1000!
The season started off with its annual trip to Martha’s Vineyard for the Island Invitational Showcase! This trip across the Vineyard featured some of New England’s finest junior players competing in a two day event at two different prestigious golf courses on the island. Day one saw players taking on Vineyard Golf Course, which is just as challenging as it is beautiful. The classic design paired with impeccable conditions gave the players a treat, while presenting them with different options on each shot which challenged the players on how to proceed. While the Vineyard is known for its sun and surf, this event stood as no vacation for these young golfers. Some impressive scores came to the forefront. Of those strong results, Markus Pierre delivered a score of 70 with competitors Jesse Hellring and Julian Ragosa nipping at his heels with scores of 73 and 75 respectively. Day 2 was played at the incredible Farm Neck Golf Club, one of the most sought after courses in New England since the late 1970’s. Pierre’s consistency ended up being the story of the tournament as he would better his previous rounds score with an unmatched 68 on the day. Other superb scores came from Carson Muse and Baker O’leary who both shot 70’s to close out the tournament.
The Junior Tour has always been a journey, taking its competitors to places across New England to showcase their skills from the mountains and forests of Belgrade Lakes, Maine to Cranberry Valley Golf Course and the southernmost tips of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. While our players do love the journey, it is the competition that has kept our players focused and dialed in no matter where the tour has brought them. There are truly no better tournaments that exemplify fierce competition and a slim margin for error quite like our qualifiers and championships.
The 13th of June brought our players to Bayberry Hills GC for the chance to qualify for the Junior PGA Championship and the Avidia Cup. That being said, there was no shortage of high level golf that day. Fifty-six young golfers had their eyes set on the top nine spots to secure the chance to play at the championship level this year. Dylan Lissy boasted the top score on the day with an even 72 on the day through his eighteen with Ollie Fearing and Jason Giampapa trailing right behind with scores of 73 on the day. The rest of the day saw scores come down to the wire as the next six qualifiers all scored 74 in an amazing six way tie for the last qualifying spots.
June 15th brought the tour to the majestic beast that is Crystal Lake Golf Club, a beautiful course for a Jr. PGA Championship qualifier.
From all over New England players came with high hopes of placing in that exclusive top six with their eyes on the prize that awaited one lucky winner on June 28th. The highest qualifying score was an impressive 74, but that was not quite low enough for Reese Jensen who topped the group with a score of 71, one better than the second and third place finishers Carson Erick, and Connor Griffin. These young golfers, and many more will join us at Shaker Hills for what should be an excellent Tour Championship.
On the Juneteenth holiday, Rye, New Hampshire’s own Abenaqui CC held yet another Avidia Cup qualifier. Abenaqui can be described as easy on the eyes, but not on the faint of heart, as this top tier golf course prepares the player for any sort of situation they could possibly encounter through 18 holes. Pure fairways and greens clashed with daunting yet rewarding shots to the pin which had just as high a chance of heading into the water as they did hitting the dance floor. Jacob Moody accepted the day’s challenge, setting a high bar for his competitors with an impressive two over par, 74. New Hampshire’s own Jimmy Schouller tied Syed Noorwez with a score of 75 for second and third place. Additionally, three more players made the cut and will be seen July 19th and 20th at the Avidia Cup.
Golf is arguably the most individually rewarding sport in the world, with so many events, and such a high level of skill needed to perform and compete. After each event, players are rewarded with player of the year points and this year's race for the title of player of the year is a thriller to say the least. As we near halfway through the season, here are some of the frontrunners. In the Boys 16-18 division, Ryan C. Felony has placed first in all three of his events for a total of 75 points. In the Boys 14-15 division a tight race sees Anthony Barror at the top with 75 points, followed closely by Jack Oreal with 69 points. Victor Layevsky in the Boys 12-13 Division has shown dominance in his events with a high score of 126 points on the season. In the boys 11 and under division, one player, Ned Yetten has shown tremendous consistency and with it has been awarded 120 points in his five events. The leader for the girls 14-18 division Olivia Cutting has had great performances all year long, a consistent medal winner with 80 points on the year. Lastly, Charlotte Rollins has been nothing but excellent all year long at every event and has compiled an astounding 175 points. We congratulate each of these frontrunners on these great performances, but rest assured that it is still anyone's race for the title of Player of the Year.
Our Drive Chip and Putts have continued to impress while breaking attendance records only comparable to pre covid numbers! The first four qualifiers of the season are complete stretching from Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Maine and Central Massachusetts all in the month of June! The season kicked off with Button-hole Golf Course in Providence, RI on Saturday, June 10th with over 150 players. Our next local qualifier brought us to Biddeford-Saco Country Club in Saco, ME, where unfortunately the rainy weather seen this summer forced us to cancel and reschedule the event for our 90 player field. The rain continued to make conditions difficult down at Cranberry Valley in Harwich, MA on June 24th for our 80 players. Then finally to Green Hill Golf Course in Worcester, MA to end June with over 120 players on a perfectly sunny day!
PGA REACH New England hosted the 2023 REACH Classic on Monday, June 19th at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Mass.
