Know Your Numbers with Brian Diamond, PGA, NEPGA Junior Golf Committee Co-Chairman Hello 2018 NEPGA Junior Tour Members! It is a fun and exciting time here in New England to be preparing for and playing in golf tournaments this summer. I've been coaching several junior golfers' this spring to prepare for their season. Here are some observations that I thought might be helpful to share: Equipment Have you outgrown your equipment from last year? Some of you may have been very busy with other spring sports and may not have had the opportunity yet to play or practice golf. Check your clubs to make sure they are still the appropriate length, lie and shaft flex. I have seen kids grow 4-5" over the winter and the need to adjust their clubs for much greater swing speeds. Other equipment such as golf shoes and gloves should also be evaluated so that you are ready to go for your first tournament. Your local PGA Professional can help fit you for the proper equipment. Yardage Gapping Knowing your yardages is crucial to playing good golf. Many of you are going to see a significant change in your distances from last season. Take the time to track your distances for each club and write them down for reference during play. Track your Stats A really good habit to form is keeping track of your most important stats during play. Fairways hit from the tee, greens in regulation and putts per hole are three key stats to track and will help you to evaluate strengths and area's for improvement in your game. Know your Personal Par Determine what your personal par is and set realistic goals and expectations. Are you trying to break 40, 45, 50 for the first time. Shoot in the 60's, 70's, 80's or break 100? It is exciting to progress in golf and reach new levels of achievement based on your own personal abilities. You will likely play with fellow competitors this summer who have varying skill levels. Some may hit the ball much further than you or shoot lower scores. Some may not hit it as far as you and shoot higher scores. Be respectful of others abilities and be happy with your own individual game as your personal par may be different than those who you are playing with. Wishing you all a wonderful summer and have fun playing on the NEPGA Junior Tour. What’s New?
A Wide Variety of Events
In addition to the regular one day, individual events on the Junior Tour, we are excited to integrate a selection of team events as well, encouraging players to work together out on the golf course, and to compete with friends. With the success of the few team events in 2017, such as the South Shore CC Four-Ball Tournament, we have added more to the slate for 2018. Registration for these events is only available via paper application. Team Events: Parent/Child – July 12th – Plymouth Country Club, Plymouth MA Weekapaug Scramble – July 17th – Weekapaug Country Club, Westerly, RI All Girls @ Hatherly – August 6th – Hatherly Country Club, Scituate MA ONE Entry Fee Per Team (2 Person Teams) Girls 14-18 Division will play 18 holes of Four-Ball (Best Ball) format Girls 13 & Under will play 9 holes of Scramble format
Four-Ball (Best Ball) @ South Shore CC – August 9th – South Shore Country Club, Hingham MA For each of these events, the participants who wish to compete on the same team must be in the SAME AGE DIVISION. In our continuing effort to grow the game of golf, we only require that one team member is a member of the Junior Tour, and we encourage players to invite their friends along to play. We have also added another All Girls regular stroke play event, which will take place on July 23rd at Hillview Golf Club in North Reading, Massachusetts. Not only will girls be able to compete in their own separate event, but NEPGA Junior Tour Intern Julia Ford will be conducting a clinic. Julia is a rising junior at the University of Virginia, where she is also a member of the Div. I Women’s Golf Team. Registration for this event can be done online. Looking to Play Golf in College? While the NEPGA Junior Tour is available to all ages and skill levels, it is also a great way for advanced players to get the attention of college coaches at all levels of collegiate golf. Despite the ‘No Spectator Policy’ of the Junior Tour, we do make exceptions for college coaches to attend our events and watch players that they are interested in. There are plenty of Junior Tour alums who go on to play golf at the college level, and they earned recognition by competing in our annual majors – The New England PGA Jr. Championship and The Big “I” – and our two-day Elite Tour Events. These events are recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard. The New England PGA Jr. Championship will be returning to Shaker Hills Golf Club in Harvard, Massachusetts this year on June 26th-27th. Entry to this event is contingent upon qualifying at one of our qualifiers, and the boy winner will automatically qualify for the national Junior PGA Championship, which will be contested at historic Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky on July 31st-August 3rd, the girl winner will advance to Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, KY on July 9-12th. Last year, the New England section sent two boys and two girls to the national event, Cole Anderson and Logan Thompson and Alexis Florio and Alison Paik for the girls. Anderson, a Maine resident and Florida State commit, captured 8
What’s New? Cont. the Boys’ title with a 36-hole score of 1-over par, while Florio took home first place for the girls with a score of +7. She is set to begin playing at Columbia University in the fall. The Big “I”, another major on the Junior Tour calendar, is another stepping stone for players looking to receive national attention at the Trusted Choice Big I National Championship. Similar to the New England Junior PGA Championship, players must qualify at one of the scheduled qualifiers for this event. A two-day tournament hosted by The Country Club of New Bedford and The Bay Club of Mattapoisett, The Massachusetts Big “I” championship advances the top 5 boys and the top 2 girls to the National Big “I” Championship. In 2017, Stoughton’s James Tyer, a Boston Globe All Scholastic for Cardinal Spellman High School, posted a 74-70-144 (+3) to win the boys division, and Gabrielle Shieh, a sophomore at Concord-Carlisle High School, carded a twoday total of 147 (+4).

Parent’s Corner Please read this thoroughly before calling the office with any questions. Hopefully, most, if not all, information you will need is right here. It is our goal to provide our members with an experience in tournament golf that is both fun and educational. We ask that you, as their parents, help us in the endeavor and follow the guidelines set forth by our organization to ensure that our goals are met. We ask you to please make note of and abide by the following principals: To us, every junior on our tour is the next up and coming star. Please don’t let your personal pride and goals overshadow the thrust of our efforts. Parents, friends, or other spectators will not be allowed on the golf course during the events. For circumstances which warrant a parent/guardian to be on course with their child (medical, etc.), the NEPGA must have documentation on file from a doctor or physician prior to the junior’s participation in the event. However, such spectators must remain on the golf car path/rough and maintain 50 yards distance from the players at all times. Unauthorized spectators on the golf course will be asked to leave and may be subject to having the junior(s) they are watching disqualified. When determining your tournament selections online, please remember, some courses are more in-demand than others. That being said, when events reach max capacity, any other registrants will go onto a wait list. Juniors on the wait list will gain a spot in a tournament in the event of a cancellation. The spot in the field will be filled according to the age division of other member/player who cancelled on a first come, first serve basis off the waitlist. Our tour is an introduction to tournament golf for these juniors and for many it is a difficult transition from playing a regular round. It is our goal to make their first experience with tournament golf rewarding and enjoyable so they will want to continue their young careers. We hate to see any added pressure put onto our tour players and ask that you keep this in mind at all times. Parents are guests at these clubs too and must adhere to dress guidelines set forth in the Jr. Tour handbook. If you are present at our tour event and are inappropriately dressed, you will be asked to leave. THE GOLDEN RULE: The most important thing is to have fun!
Frequently Asked Questions 1) Are spectators allowed at tournaments?

3) How do I cancel an event? Log onto your Players Club and click the cancel button next to the event you need to withdraw from. Welcome College Corner with Ryan Peffer, PGA Assistant Coach, Men’s and Women’s Golf Boston College Q: When you're watching talent at a tournament, what type of specific skills are you looking for in a player? RP: I try to get a better sense of a prospect’s emotional resiliency, social maturity, strategic decision making, distance off the tee, distance control with the putter, and his or her’s ability to save strokes and convert on scoring opportunities inside of 100 yards. Q: What are some of the selling points of your program to prospective recruits? RP: Boston College provides the unique opportunity to get a world-class education, compete in one of the strongest Division I athletic conferences, and live in one of the most beautiful, innovative, and vibrant cities in the country! Q: When do you start seriously looking at players? RP: I begin to seriously evaluate prospective student-athletes during their sophomore year. Q: How important is it for young players to gain experience playing in tournaments such as the ones provided by the NEPGA? RP: It is critically important! These type of tournaments help build the confidence and resiliency to eventually be successful competing in 36 and 54-hole regional championships. Q: If you could change one thing about college golf, what would it be? RP: I would move the NCAA championship season from the spring to the fall. This change would enable more student-athletes to be successful balancing academics and being successful in their sport. Q: What should players who are trying to make a name for themselves do when they're starting out? RP: I strongly encourage youth golfers to participate in at least one aerobic sport, preferably in a team format. Their participation will aid their overall athletic development and heighten their perspective.
Available Scholarships In an effort to recognize NEPGA Junior Tour juniors and to assist them with their higher academic goals, the New England PGA Junior Tour will be awarding four (4) scholarships of $2,000 each to high school graduating seniors. Applicants must be members of the NEPGA Junior Tour for at least three years and will be attending an accredited 2 year or 4 year college or university in the fall of 2018. “The NEPGA Junior Tour is proud to create another avenue to support its juniors and their endeavors. It is our priority to ‘give back’ and to help our junior families on and off the golf course,” said Jacy Settles, NEPGA Director of Junior Golf. The deadline is Wednesday, Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

The Scorecard:
A Contract Between You, the Other Players and the Committee
with Max Doctoroff, PGA, NEPGA Director of Rules & Championships
RULE 1: THE GAME
1-1: General The game of golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules. We all know it takes a great deal of time, concentration and effort to play a round of competitive golf. Many players consider the round is over when they complete play on their final hole and by definition it is. However, as a member of The Committee, the people who are responsible for determining a winner or a qualifier at an event, I am going to ask that you realize that even though your round is complete, the end of your responsibilities are not, at that point you are “almost” done. Don’t forget one last extremely important detail, verifying and signing your scorecard. Until your scorecard is attested/signed by your marker, signed by you and returned to an Official in the scoring area, your round is truly not over. The scorecard process is one of the most important parts of the game.
RULE 6: THE PLAYER 6-6: Scoring in Stroke Play
a. Recording Scores After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker must sign the scorecard and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each marker must sign for the part for which he is responsible. b. Signing and Returning Scorecard After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He must ensure that the marker or markers have signed the scorecard, sign the scorecard himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 6-6b: Disqualification c. Alteration of Scorecard No alteration may be made on a scorecard after the competitor has returned it to the Committee. d. Wrong Score for Hole The competitor is responsible for the correctness of the score recorded for each hole on his scorecard. If he returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken, he is disqualified. If he returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the score as returned stands.
RULE 3: STROKE PLAY
3-1. General; Winner A stroke-play competition consists of competitors completing each hole of a stipulated round or rounds and, for each round, returning a scorecard card on which there is a gross score for each hole. Each competitor is playing against every other competitor in the competition. The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest strokes is the winner. 16
So are we exaggerating the importance of this whole scorecard thing? Read this sad story and see what you think. Many of you may never have heard of Roberto De Vicenzo, but in 1968 at The Masters, De Vicenzo finished with a final score of 277 and in a tie with Bob Goalby for the Championship. At least that is what De Vicenzo, the patrons at Augusta National and millions of people watching on television thought his score was. In reality, De Vicenzo did play 277 strokes that week, but, by not paying attention in the scoring area, taking the time to verify his score for each hole on his scorecard for the final round, De Vicenzo failed to see that his marker/fellow-competitor Tommy Aaron had recorded a four on the seventeenth hole, when De Vicenzo had actually scored a three. De Vicenzo signed and returned his scorecard to the Committee, when they added the scores recorded for the final round it totaled 66, and his four round total became 278. As we saw earlier, Rule 6-6d. states when a player returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the higher score must stand. Instead of being in an 18-hole play-off the next day, with a chance to win The Masters, De Vicenzo finished second. If that story doesn’t make you realize how important verifying that your scorecard is correct and how much time, attention and concentration you should give to getting it right, then I don’t know what will. I don’t believe there is anyone who has ever played golf who wouldn’t give just about anything to have a chance to win The Masters. Roberto De Vicenzo played 277 great shots on the course, he had a chance to win, until he made one bad stroke, with his pencil, signing an incorrect scorecard. Think of it this way, your scorecard is basically a contract between you, your fellow-competitors and the Committee. It tells all of us exactly what has transpired over the last 4-5 hours on the golf course. Once you sign and deliver it, you are liable for what it says. So, when you have completed your round, go to the scoring area and please take your time. First make sure the numbers on the scorecard given to you when you teed off (your fellowcompetitors) are correct and written in the proper boxes on the scorecard. The fellow-competitor, whose scorecard you are responsible for keeping as his marker, will appreciate that. Sign it and give it to him. Next, remember it is your responsibility to make sure YOUR scorecard is correct, that you have resolved any questions that may have arisen during the round and that it is signed by you and your marker. PLEASE, before you leave the scoring area, return a scorecard with 18 correct scores and 2 signatures on it. It your responsibility as stated in Rule 6-6b.
