THE GREENWAY, A DREAM WALK BETWEEN COLONNO AND CADENABBIA

It covers only 10 km but along the path there is a universe of fascinating views which let you breath the soul and date back to the splendour of the past letting us dig into our origins. The Greenway is all this in a handful of kilometers from Tramezzina. From Colonno to Sala Comacina, proceeding to Ossuccio, Lenno, Tremezzo, Mezzegra until Cadenabbia di Griante: this Greenway goes along the lake, then coming out gently on the top of the residential areas of these seven small gems. Step by step, covering the whole length for 3 and half hours, it will not be difficult to discover the different depths of this territory, able to switch from rural scenarios to historical hamlets, from lacustrine sights to villas and gardens without comparison. The Greenway is not just a one-day excursion: the path is inserted in a network where it is given people the possibility to stop and restart the path from the preferred point, thanks to different contact points with the road network and mainly with the means of transport, either buses or boats for transport. 1. FROM COLONNO TO SALA COMACINA Firstly, do not worry because there are signs and inSono soltanto 10 chilometri, ma lungo quel percorso si è espanso un universo fatto di scorci che affascinano lo sguardo e fanno respirare l’anima, che ci riportano ai fasti che furono e ci fanno scavare nelle nostre origini. Sì, la Greenway è tutto questo in una manciata di chilometri di Tremezzina. Da Colonno a Sala Comacina, per poi continuare con Ossuccio, Lenno, Tremezzo, Mezzegra e fermarsi a Cadenabbia di Griante: questo verde itinerario si snoda con dolcezza fra il lungo lago, per poi riemergere gentilmente sopra gli abitati di queste sette piccole gemme. E passo dopo passo, coprendo le tre ore e mezza circa che occorrono per percorrerla interamente, non sarà difficile scoprire le diverse profondità di questo territorio, capace di spaziare fra scenari rurali, borghi storici, vedute lacustri, ville e giardini senza rivali. La Greenway non è solo un’escursione di un giorno: il percorso è inserito nella rete di collegamenti presente, dando la possibilità a chiunque di interrompersi e di riprendere il tragitto nel punto che si è scelto grazie a differenti punti di contatto con la rete stradale e soprattutto con i mezzi pubblici, che siano autobus o battelli per navigazione.

1. DA COLONNO A SALA COMACINA In primis niente paura, segnalazioni e indicazioni sono presenti sul percorso: dalle piastre in metallo con il logo ai segnavia in pietra, passando per i cartelli direzionali riportanti anche la distanza ancora da percorrere. Per iniziare la camminata serve entrare da sud a Colonno, prendendo via Cappella che sale a sinistra e seguendo “Greenway del Lago”. Il passaggio è per il centro storico del paese, la piazza principale e il ponte sul torrente Pessetta, prima di tuffarsi all’inseguimento di Sala Comacina lungo la vecchia strada Regina. Qui si inizia a respirare, camminando tra appezzamenti terrazzati e piccoli uliveti. La cappelletta di San Rocco fa suonare il campanello e proprio da qui scende una scalinata per il nucleo storico medioevale e il porticciolo: siamo arrivati a Sala Comacina. L’asfalto viene lasciato presto a se stesso, per imboccare poi la nobile passeggiata che garantisce un posto in prima fila sull’Isola Comacina.

A stroke of luck for poets, painters and artists For the ones arriving at Sala Comacina driving the comfortable provincial road or disembarking the steamer of the Lariana Company, it is difficult to get an idea of the original aspect of this town in the past centuries: the old village needs looking for below the parish of San Bartolomeo. You need to follow the streets with steep steps, walking among humble houses, which are usually shaded. Doctors could say that these narrow streets do not correspond to the needs of a modern life, but luckily for poets, painters and artists in general this is a perfect condition for getting the “local colour”.

2. ROAD TO OSSUCCIO Every part, in which the Greenways is divided, takes about 35-40 minutes on foot. The second part takes you right to Ossuccio. Leaving behind Sala Comacina and crossing over the bridge on Premonte Valley you enter the ex-municipality which is now part of Tremezzina. The temptation could be to cross “Zoca de l’oli” which is the bay in front of the town where the water is “as smooth as oil” in order to reach Isola Comacina and the ruins of the basilica of Sant’Eufeun’idea dell’aspetto che presentava questo paese nei secoli passati: il vecchio villaggio bisogna andarlo a cercare giù in basso, al di sotto della parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo. Bisogna scendere certe ripide stradette a gradini, penetrare fra umili case, dove il sole penetra a stento. I medici diranno che questi vicoli angusti non corrispondono alle esigenze della vita moderna; ma che colpo di fortuna per i pittori, peri i poeti, per gli artisti in genere e per tutti coloro che vanno in cerca del cosiddetto “colore locale”!

2. ROAD TO OSSUCCIO Per ciascuno dei cinque tratti in cui è suddivisa la Greenway si prevedono all’incirca 35-40 minuti di percorrenza media a piedi: il secondo capitolo porta dritto per dritto ad Ossuccio. Lasciata alle spalle Sala Comacina e superato il ponte sulla valle di Premonte si fa l’ingresso nell’ex comune, oggi facente parte del comune di Tremezzina. La tentazione potrebbe essere attraversare la “Zoca de l’oli” (il golfo dinanzi al paese, dove l’acqua è per l’appunto “liscia come l’olio”), per raggiungere l’Isola Comacina e i resti della basilica di

Sant’Eufemia oppure la chiesa di San Giovanni. Ma questa è un’altra storia. Nella frazione di Spurano la sosta si chiama chiesa di San Giacomo (X-XII secolo) e il suo campanile a vela, per poi risalire verso il santuario della Madonna del Soccorso. Per scendere a Isola (un’altra frazione) serve attraversare il paese, gettare un’occhiata al campanile di Santa Maria Maddalena e alla chiesa dei Santissimi Eufemia e Vincenzo, per arrivare poi a Villa Balbiano.

Dal campanile all’Isola Comacina Il campanile in primo piano, l’isola Comacina a seguire, il contorno placido del lago e lo sfondo verdastro delle montagne: è un quadro scattato milioni di volte, uno dei punti più celebri di tutto il Lago di Como. Stiamo parlando della chiesa romanica di Santa Maria Maddalena, famosa per il suo campanile del trecento. Col passare del tempo è diventato uno dei simboli delle bellezze artistiche dell’intero lago: la natura vota invece Isola Comacina, da Ossuccio raggiungibile sia in taxi-boat che con la Navigazione. From the roman period to the High Middle Ages the island covered a strategic political and economic position. For centuries it was a fortified town connected to a series of minor fortresses

and watchtowers on land. For 20 years it was the byzantine quarter and even one of the last fortress of the Western Roman Empire. In 1169 in Como, during ten-year war against Milan, the island was left as a heap of ruins forcing the inhabitants to seek refuge in Varenna, on the opposite bank of the lake. It was left uninhabited until it was discovered in the 20th century and went under the responsibility of Brera Accademy which had three houses built for artists in a Rationalist style.

3. TOWARDS THE JETTY OF LENNO The bridge is on Perlana and we can step back in time to Campo di Lenno: the narrow streets slope down to the lake where there is the entrance of Villa Monastero and Dosso di Lavedo on the right and the camping on the left, all sights of the third stop. Look out for a little deviation to Villa Balbianello. The most diligent ones will follow the Greenway to the Lido of Lenno, walking along the lake among the historical villas, the church of Santo Stefano and the baptistery of San Giovanni before arriving to the jetty for boats or hydrofoils. mica determinante. 3. VERSO L’IMBARCADERO DI LENNO Il ponte sul Perlana e via con un passo indietro nel tempo per Campo di Lenno: vicoli e discese a lago, l’ingresso di villa Balbianello e il Dosso di Lavedo (sulla destra, con il camping a sinistra) sono gli elementi della terza tappa. per arrivare al Lido di Lenno, passeggiando sul lungolago fra ville storiche, la chiesa di Santo Stefano e il battistero di San Giovanni, prima di arrivare all’imbarcadero (battello e aliscafo).

La villa che ha incantato Hollywood È piuttosto risaputo che il Lago di Como abbia la capacità di ammaliare Hollywood: in particolare la Villa Balbianello di Lenno si è presa la scena in due produzioni multimilionarie dell’industria dei sogni americana. Facciamo un passo indietro: la villa, attualmente di proprietà del Fai (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) si trova sulla punta della penisola di Lavedo ed è stata costruita all’inizio del XVIII secolo, frequentata poi da intellettuali ed esponenti del Risorgimento italiano. Ed eccola, aperta da marzo a novembre: linee sobrie, semplici, con una terrazza a lago semplicemente unica e dominata dall’enorme leccio potato a ombrello, così come la loggia, dalla quale si gode di una vista mozzafiato. Si tratta di un unicum in cui si intrecciano elementi di giardino all’italiana, peculiarità del giardino all’inglese e aspetti del giardino alla francese. LOOKING FOR TREMEZZO There is a promenade on the stream Pola connecting Lenno to Tremezzo which is marginally included in this itinerary, whereas going up on a narrow street you can reach Mezzegra. The parvis of the church Sant’Abbondio offers the pedestrians an idillic show on the lake and on the promontory of Bellagio. You will see the 18th-century Palazzo Brentano, located in Bonzanigo. Crossing the small historical centre you will arrive at Palazzo Rosati, then you will reach another bridge, this time on Bolvedro, in order to go back to the lake. Bolvedro is an administrative subdivision of Tremezzo. Villa Balbaniello non è sfuggito a George Lucas. Il padre di Star Wars ha infatti voluto ambientare qui la residenza della senatrice Padmé Amidala sul “pianeta dei laghi” Naboo, in “Episodio II – L’attacco dei cloni”, uscito nel 2002. Attraversandone il piccolo centro antico si sbuca a Palazzo Rosati, per poi giungere ad un altro ponte, questo volta sul Bolvedro, per ritornare in riva al lago. Dove? Proprio a Bolvedro, sottodivisione amministrativa di Tremezzo.

L’estro locale per la Natività Tutti i giorni nella piazzetta del lavatoio all’entrata del borgo medievale di Bonzanigo, poco distante dalla chiesa di Sant’Abbondio e da Palazzo Brentano, trova spazio l’estro, unito alle radici delle tradizioni, di alcuni artisti locali. All’interno di un’antica casa padronale si trovano infatti diversi presepi realizzati artigianalmente: i creatori hanno saputo rappresentare la Natività miscelando il paziente criterio della ricerca storica con fedeli riproduzioni miniaturizzate, alternando le scenografie tradizionali del classico immaginario palestinese a quelle del caratteristico paesaggio lariano. To begin with, you can see the Park of Villa Mayer and then you can explore Tremezzo. The colonnade of the historical centre and the jetty for boats and hydrofoils are the key points before disembarking at the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia. We have arrived at the jetty of Cadenabbia, little village of Griante, where it is possible to be met by a private driver.

what is sure is that many have been fascinated by the inspiring charm of Cadenabbia. It would be nice to ask Stendhal, who located here some part of the book “La certosa di Parma”, or Ricordi music editors who owned Villa Margherita, which was re-christened Villa Ricordi. Even Giuseppe Verdi stayed in this humble place who composed here some of his arias of Traviata. And then, there is Longfellow, writer and poet, who dedicated different arias to Griante. volta sì) a Tremezzo. I portici del centro storico e l’imbarcadero (battello e aliscafo) sono i punti chiave, prima di approdare al Grand Hotel Cadenabbia: eccoci, siamo arrivati ormai all’imbarcadero di Cadenabbia, frazione di Griante (dove è in funzione anche il servizio auto).

Cadenabbia, una musa ispiratrice Come può un paese così piccolo, frazione di Griante, ospitare artisti e personalità provenienti da tutto il mondo? Forse nemmeno il lago conosce la risposta, ma quel che è certo è che in parecchi si sono fatti ammaliare dal fascino ispiratore di Cadenabbia. Sarebbe bello chiedere a Stendhal che aveva ambientato alcuni passi de “La Certosa di Parma”, oppure agli editori musicali Ricordi, che possedevano Villa Margherita (ribattezzata Villa Ricordi): in questa umile dimora fu ospitato anche il maestro Giuseppe Verdi che compose alcune arie della Traviata. E poi c’è Longfellow: lo scrittore e poeta dedicò parecchie arie a Griante.

I tre periodi di Villa Carlotta Settantamila metri quadrati non sono certo una cosa da poco: Villa Carlotta si trova incastonata fra montagne e splendidi scorci sulla penisola di Bellagio. La costruzione risale intorno al 1690, e proprio al periodo Clerici risale la creazione del giardino all’italiana che fronteggia la villa, con scale, balaustre, una fontana e lo straordinario pergolato di agrumi. Fu invece durante il periodo dell’imprenditore e collezionista Giambattista Sommariva (la acquistò nel 1795 e la portò al suo massimo splendore) che la villa divenne il museo ancora oggi visitabile con opere di Canova, Hayez e Thorvaldsen. Pezzi artistici di inestimabile valore. Infine passò nelle mani della famiglia Sassonia-Meinigen che si occupò della formazione e dello sviluppo del giardino paesaggistico che negli anni ha ottenuto fama internazionale: dalla fioritura dei rododendri alle oltre 150 varietà di azalee è uno spettacolo di floricoltura senza eguali. Non visitarla sarebbe davvero un peccato, lascerebbe un che di incompleto alla vostra esperienza con la Greenway. Sospesa fra un magnifico parco botanico e le sue sale ricche di capolavori d’arte si pone come un luogo unico, in cui la magia della natura ha saputo miscelarsi con sapienza e armonia con l’ingegno umano.

The three periods of Villa Carlotta Villa Carlotta is an outstanding 70.000 square meters villa and it is set between the mountains and beautiful views of the peninsula of Bellagio. The building dates back to around 1690 and, during the Clerici period, the Italian style garden was created in front of the villa with stairs, balustrades, a fountain and an extraordinary pergola of agrume trees. During the period of the entrepreneur and collector Giambattista Sommariva he bought the villa in 1795 and helped it to reach its maximum splendour. The villa became a museum which is still open to visitors with works of Canova, Hayes and Thorvaldsen, which are priceless works of art. Later, the villa was owned by the Sassonia-Meningen family who was in charge of the creation and development of the landscape garden which got an international reputation in the eighties. With its rhododendrons and more than 150 varieties of azaleas the garden has no comparison. It would be a pity not visiting the villa, leaving something incomplete in your Greenway experience. Suspended between a beautiful botanic park and its rooms full of works of art, the villa is outstanding as a unique place where the magic of nature was able to mingle with the wisdom and harmony of the human intelligence.

The 8 hectares garden is a charming place not only for the great panoramic position, but also for the harmonious coexistence of styles, the richness of essences, the literary splendour making it an unmissable destination for those arriving on Lake Como. In spring, the spectacular blooms in the gardens of Villa Carlotta begin. An evocative natural environment, characterized by the alternation of styles and landscape which makes this garden a place full of charm and surprises; the Garden is also the result of a continuous evolution from the 1600s to today. Almost a sample of the development of the gardens art. From the scenic and perspective settings of the Italian garden, through the emotion of a picturesque, rugged and wild nature of the romantic era to get to the contemporary landscaping without forgetting the pleasure for the exotic, the Mediterranean and the oriental garden. The current layout of the garden is the result of successive modifications, extensions and layering. The Italian style garden it dates back between the end of the 1600s and the beginning of 1700s and it has high geometrical trimmed hedges, balustrade parapets, statues and water features. WALKING IN THE VILLAGES OF TREMEZZINA The path of villages is, beautiful, easy, suitable for everyone and can be done in all seasons of the year. It develops in stages, for each of which a walk between 15 and 30 minutes is expected. The departure is in Portezza, a small hamlet located between Tremezzo and Lenno, originally inhabited by fishermen on the lake. We continue towards Giulino di Mezzegra: here the route begins near VillaBelmonte, the place where Mussolini was sentenced to death on April 28, 1945. You then enter Bonzanigo, one of the greatest history stories of the whole Tremezzina, here you can visit " La casa dei Presepi" open all year from 10.00 a.m. to 18.00 p.m.. The path continues in the hamlet of Viano, where the remains of the Triulzi spinning mill are found, active from 1854 to 1877 in the manufacture of silk. Following a jump of about 350 meters (more demanding than the rest of the route),you reach the hamlet of Intignano, in the kitchen you can see the remains of an ancient fortifield courtyard, the place of origin of the Mainoni Family, a kind of probability on a Roman settlement before the fifth century.

A PASSEGGIO NEI BORGHI DI TREMEZZINA

Il Percorso dei Borghi è bellissimo, facile, adatto a tutti e si può compiere in tutte le stagioni dell'anno. Si sviluppa a tappe, per ognuna delle quali si prevede una camminata tra i 15 e i 30 minuti circa. La partenza è a Portezza, piccola frazione situata fra Tremezzo e Lenno, originariamente abitata da pescatori a lago. Si prosegue verso Giulino di Mezzegra: qui il percorso inizia in prossimità di Villa Belmonte, luogo dove venne eseguita la condanna a morte di Mussolini il 28 aprile del 1945. Si entra poi Bonzanigo, una delle frazioni più ricche di storia di tutta Tremezzina, qui potete visitare "La Casa dei Presepi" aperta tutto l'anno dalle 10 alle 18. Si prosegue per Viano, dove si incontrano i resti della Filanda Triulzi, attiva dal 1854 al 1877 nella lavorazione della seta. Percorrendo un salto di circa 350 metri (più impegnativa rispetto a tutto il resto del percorso), si giunge alla frazione di Intignano, in cui sono visibili i resti di un'antica corte fortificata, luogo d'origine della famiglia Mainoni, sorta probabilmente su un insediamento romano anterio-

re al V secolo. Si entra poi in Volesio, con le sue vecchie corti seicentesche, la Chiesa e Oratorio di San Pietro e Paolo, il sentiero panoramico che costeggia il torrente e il Palazzo di Bernardo Mainoni. Da qui si prosegue per Balogno che si distingue per i suoi edifici architettonici risalenti al Seicento e al Settecento: Palazzo di Bernardo Carli, Palazzo Mainoni Carli, Palazzo di Domenico Maria Carli e Palazzo di Giovanna Raineri.

Il Borgo di Tremezzo È ricco di palazzi sei-settecenteschi, lascito delle importanti famiglie di mercanti che da questi borghi partirono per il nord Europa alla ricerca della fortuna. Per scoprire le bellezze architettoniche della zona, si consiglia la passeggiata sul lungolago, da Villa Carlotta (aperta al pubblico) a Bolvedro (30 minuti circa, percorso facile, adatto a tutti).
