BELLAGIO E VARENNA

LECCO for Beautiful Lake Lying on the shores of Lake Como, Lecco has 50,000 inhabitants and a long history, deeply rooted in the Duchy of Milan with the Visconti family and the Spanish and Austrian domination. The historical centre is architecturally homogeneous with 19th century streaks (liberty and neoclassical style). Designed by Lecco-born architect Giuseppe Bovara, the Teatro della Società is well worth a visit. Other top spots include the so-called “vallo delle mura”, the staircase leading to the Saint Nicolò Basilica with its pencil-thin belltower (very tall and open to the public), the monument to writer Alessandro Manzoni in the glamourous via Roma and a lot of other tiny details for the art and architecture connoisseurs to discover. Make sure you don’t miss the local delicious food such as missoltini (=lakefish), wines from Montevecchia, tasty cheeses from cottages in Valsassina. Lecco offers hourly mini-cruises on the lake, for you to discover those remote lakeside beaches.
