DSM collaborates with S-Biomedic on probiotic technology A GLOBAL SCIENCE-based company active in health, nutrition and materials, Royal DSM, has announced a collaboration and commercialisation agreement with S-Biomedic. This development aims to bring a new probiotic technology-based skin care active to market for the treatment of acne. DSM will be S-Biomedic’s worldwide exclusive manufacturing and go to market partner for this active and plans to start commercialisation of the new technology within the next 18 to 24 months. The microbiome is a strategic area for DSM. The company already holds a strong position in the field of gut health, with its range of probiotic solutions, and sees significant growth potential in probiotic skin care and other microbiome-focused solutions. Recent studies on the skin microbiome reveal that skin-associated diseases such as acne vulgaris, eczema, psoriasis, and dandruff are associated with strong and specific changes within the microbiome. Researchers from S-Biomedic have been studying how live bacteria can be used to modulate the skin microbiome’s composition.

‘We observed better results using a multi-strain donor solution with recipient skin rich in a specific Cutibacterium acnes subtype, with positive features isolated from healthy individuals,’ explains Bernhard Paetzold, lead author of the study and co-founder and chief scientific officer of S-Biomedic. These findings open up vast opportunities for the development of probiotic solutions that could help improve microbiome status from diseased to healthy, specifically to treat inflammatory acne. Under the terms of the agreement, DSM will contribute its manufacturing and commercialisation expertise. ‘DSM has a proven track record in developing vitamins, yeast extracts, preservatives, cultures, biofuels, and bio-plastics via biotechnology,’ comments Rishabh Pande, vice president marketing and innovation, personal care and aroma at DSM. ‘We have a solid manufacturing foundation to build on, and together with our strong expertise in distribution and marketing, we look forward to bringing this exciting technology to market.’

Mondi sets sight on fully biodegradable nonwoven for wipes A GLOBAL LEADER in packaging and paper, Mondi has developed a new Carded Airlaid Carded (CAC) line to create a more sustainable three-layer nonwoven for wipes. This can be used for personal hygiene and cleaning purposes. This new line will use 100 percent cellulose content, including viscose and pulp from certified sources, resulting in a nonwoven material that is fully biodegradable. The new technology being employed for the planned CAC line – located at Mondi’s plant in Ascania, Germany – will make it possible to combine three layers into a highly functional and stable composite material. This will deliver optimal absorption and lotion load for high-quality biodegradable wipes and uses fewer resources than comparable carded monostructures. The technology will be able to produce the entire sustainable nonwoven material in-line, while enabling hydroembossing to increase softness and improve cleaning power.

Mondi’s vision is to contribute to a better world, and its focus lies in producing innovative products that are sustainable by design. ‘The innovative technology means we can produce 100 percent biodegradable, high-performance nonwovens for wipes that are more accessible, and we are looking forward to introducing this to the market,’ explains Kelly Wright, Mondi’s product expert for personal care and components. The new line is set to be fully operational by 2021.

Samples of the new sustainable nonwoven material will be presented at Index 2020, at Mondi’s booth 1560, taking place from 31 March to 3 April in Geneva

Sustainable solutions for rinse-off applications OMYACARE S 75-KP and Omyacare S 95-KP minerals are now Ecocert approved. The certificate confirms that both ingredients are natural, environmentally friendly and sustainable. Bright white Omyacare particles sourced from natural calcium carbonate can be used as cleansing agents with different grades of abrasiveness. These particles adjust the colour, viscosity and texture of toothpaste, tooth tabs and rinse-off applications, such as soap or handwash tabs. Stefan Lander, vice president for consumer goods at Omya, comments: ‘With Omyacare, we focus on tailored

particles based solely on natural calcium carbonate. This allows us to produce a sustainable ingredient with a very low carbon footprint.’ Ecocert is among the world’s leading specialists in the certification of sustainable materials and practices. Its motto ‘working towards a sustainable world’ is a key driver of the organisation’s efforts to verify and approve sustainable raw materials. Applications like Omyacare, which are certified by Ecocert, have to meet high ecological standards, including non-GMO, responsibly sourced and providing support for biodiversity. As a producer of approved Ecocert raw materials, Omya

commits to sustainable production and processes, respecting the environment and human health. The company is represented locally by CJP Chemicals.

Ronald Britton launches microplastic free, iridescent glitter THE CREATOR OF the world’s most eco-friendly glitter brand, Bioglitter, has announced the development of a microplastic free, iridescent effect glitter. Stephen Cotton, director of Ronald Britton, says: ‘This is another first from Ronald Britton. The new product is the only iridescent effect glitter available on the market, which is microplastic free.’ Ronald Britton launched Bioglitter Sparkle two years ago and Bioglitter Pure, the world’s first microplastic free and TÜV certified fresh water biodegradable glitter last year. Since launching, the brand has received global acclaim, working with major cosmetics brands and retailers and has seen messages of support from Sir David Attenborough and was short listed in National Geographic’s innovative products. The iridescent glitter is a new effect within the Bioglitter Pure product family. The glitter has a reflective and shimmer quality, which, up until this point, has been impossible to achieve in a microplastic free glitter. Cotton adds: ‘Traditional iridescent glitter gains its look from the refractive properties of special plastic films and this is where we’ve faced a real challenge. The chemistry and physics simply don’t work with natural raw materials, so we have had to totally re-engineer the glitter to cut out all the plastic and still create refractive effects. The result is our new iridescent product, Bioglitter Pure Opal.’ This new product comes in a choice of three colours: rose; mint or aqua and is available in five different sizes. In addition to adding an iridescent effect to the Bioglitter Pure product range, Ronald Britton has announced the launch of a Vivid colour range. Bioglitter Pure Vivid is available in five different sizes in a strong Fuchsia colour. Bioglitter products are made from a special form of cellulose,

International retailers including Tesco, Primark, Monsoon and Selfridges as well as many cosmetics brands have moved to using Bioglit ter based products, as part of their strategy to cut plastic waste in the environment

unique to the brand and have passed independent tests including TÜV and Austria’s ‘OK Biodegradable Water’ Certification, which guarantees biodegradation in natural, freshwater environments. Picking up several industry awards, Bioglitter has been developed to tackle environmental microplastic pollution caused by traditional plastic based glitter. The product will decompose in the natural environment, unlike products based on modified natural polymers like PLA, Cellulose Acetate and other forms of cellulose, which need to go through a composting process to break down and therefore are a form of microplastic if they find their way into the environment. Bioglitter products are available in South Africa from Meganede.

Since its establishment in 1983, Wrapsa has expanded into South Africa’s leading pharmaceutical contract manufacturer. Customer confidentiality and service excellence are at the centre of this business.

A

pioneer and trend setter, Wrapsa manufactures over 1 000 different products for various customers. Located in Centurion, the facility now spans 18 500m² and provides employment for approximately 660 people. Wrapsa is southern Africa’s largest independently owned pharmaceutical contract manufacturer and operates in line with South African Health Products Regulatory Authority’s (SAHPRA) subscription to the Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperative Scheme (PIC/S). Wrapsa is also an ISO 9001:2015 accredited facility. Ultimately, by adhering to the PIC/S guidelines, Wrapsa guarantees the quality, safety and efficacy of all medicines manufactured on site, with current GMP (cGMP) being the backbone of quality assurance in all areas of production. Wrapsa is home to an approved aerosol filling plant for medicinal aerosols. The company also manufactures toiletries for the personal care sector and has setup the necessary infrastructure for to manufacture liquids; syrups; suspensions; emulsions; creams; ointments; gels; toothpastes; powders; granules; uncoated, sugarcoated or film-coated tablets; capsules; caplets and lozenges. While 90 percent of its manufacturing activities are for the pharmaceutical industry, Wrapsa also has an ISO 22000 certification, which is in line with the requirements for manufacturing foodstuffs. This facility is also registered with the US Food and Drug Administration. Although the business has changed over the past 37 years to keep up with the times, its focus on being a totally bona fide contractor has remained the same. This makes Wrapsa unique. The company took the decision years ago not to compete with its customers, considering it’s privy to so much confidential information. This is an area of utmost sensitivity for Wrapsa and the main reason why it has never developed in-house products. Contract manufacturers are essentially an extension of their customers business, and clients of Wrapsa tend to be intimately involved in the operations that take place within the business. These customers rightly hold a sense of ownership of the processes specific to their products.

Compliant and quality conscious Wrapsa supplies inexpensive medicines for the masses. It is proud to play an integral part in fostering access to good quality medicines, while simultaneously complying with the requirements set out by the International Organisation for Standardisation. The PIC/S upgrade at Wrapsa paved the way for the biggest changes at the company’s manufacturing facility.

Quality is the most important aspect of the business. If you don’t have a quality product, you don’t have any customers. All the Critical Control Points are monitored, hygiene checks are implemented, and hand sanitising stations are accessible at multiple points throughout the facility. Home to state-of-the-art equipment, Wrapsa’s laboratory is responsible for testing all API and excipient raw materials received, according to the latest Pharmacopoeial methods, or as required per product by the guidelines set out in the product dossier. Finished products are also tested according to validated methods supplied by customers, as required by product dossiers. The activities in the laboratory have a major impact on quality assurance, SAHPRA and ISO compliance. Wrapsa has a fully equipped stability laboratory offering: • stability tests a) various climatic zones b) allopathic medicines c) complementary medicines d) health supplements • comparative dissolution testing • verification of analytical methods and more • research & development. Wrapsa has initiated the process of attaining SANAS 17025:2005 accreditation. Part of this process is the evaluation of its quality management system as well as an inspection of the Wrapsa laboratory facility and equipment.

Automated yet flexible Remaining in constant contact with customers and maintaining flexibility in terms of the supply chain system, are both essential factors in upholding effective logistics. Wrapsa has started to bring in raw materials directly from international manufacturers to overcome the growing challenge in the supply chain of the limited number of local suppliers importing certain items. On the packaging side, Wrapsa sources all packaging components locally and is pleased with the good and continuous supply of products from packaging manufacturers in South Africa. With the focus of the business being so diverse, no two service level agreements are the same, making planning essential to this contract manufacturing company. When Wrapsa receives an order, it is processed by entering it into a production system. This is a custom-designed webbased program that is unique to Wrapsa and its needs as a contract manufacturing business. All departments have access to this system and can view the production schedule to set priorities. Planning then takes place based on what is scheduled and required for the period ahead.

This automated and exclusive operational system also provides Wrapsa with the much-needed platform to determine the availability of packaging components and raw materials. It is also unique in that customers have remote access to their specific sections of the program, allowing them to track the progress of procurement and to determine when a product is due for production. As a contract manufacturer in a competitive market, Wrapsa has to ensure it’s extremely accurate when it comes to purchasing and that it always buys the best quality at the best possible price and at the right time. These are the three pillars of procurement at Wrapsa. Working as a team is one of the main reasons why Wrapsa has been able to attain such incredible growth. This has impacted on production coordination in the most positive of ways, to iron out problems, keep customers happy and deliver on time.

Focused on technology transfer Over the last 37 years, Wrapsa has been fulfilling the definitive need in South Africa for reliable local manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and personal care, aerosol, veterinary, beverage and food supplement products. The organisation has grown steadily from modest beginnings to become southern Africa’s largest independently owned and fully accredited bona fide contract manufacturer, supplying award-winning and expert services to some of world’s leading pharma giants and most influential brands. The specialist teams at Wrapsa, which oversee the various areas within the business, have a vast range of skills between them. The teams also endeavour to stay abreast of new trends and technologies, both locally and internationally, through access to global factories and working groups. One of the spinoffs of this philosophy was the transfer of technology to manufacture anti-retroviral products on behalf of a major pharma company located in India, using highly sophisticated apparatus.

Socially responsible Wrapsa has an incredibly tight group of employees and experiences a remarkably low staff turnover. The company is also proud of its contribution to the local community. Training and skills developments are not only a necessity in Wrapsa’s area of production, but also beneficial to employees and empower them. For this reason, Wrapsa is aware that any decisions it makes as management has the potential to impact on many people beyond its walls – and Wrapsa ensures it’s mindful of this at all times. •

The company has always operated in a highly energy efficient manner and was among the first manufacturers in Johannesburg to operate on gas power supplied by Egoli Gas. More recently, Hersol has installed a new generator, bringing this total to three and allowing it to move completely off the grid. Hersol’s R&D department is an important contributor of new ideas and concepts that add value to its customers’ businesses. The R&D team assists customers to be innovative and helps improve their products in the market. The team’s latest area of focus is CBD oil, for which Hersol has planned to acquire machinery to fill small bottles up to 50mℓ. Highly specialised machinery is required to fill CBD oil and Hersol is proud to let the industry know that it has included this development as part of its strategic planning. In order to meet market demands for the growing categories of health supplements, Hersol also plans to diversify into homeopathy. Personal care packaging at its best Cama recently successfully produced a complete line for a leading multinational customer, to pack up to 200 jars per minute of a hair gel product. The latest technological innovations by the group set a milestone in R&D, raising the standards in packaging automation.

T

he line consists of a monoblock system (forming and closing unit and top loading robot integrated

into one frame) and has proven to be extremely flexible, thanks to an innovative compacting head. The monoblock unit forms part of Cama’s breakthrough generation system to supply packaging machines and robots engineered for packaging businesses. The impressive features of the new BTG models are among the reasons why Cama has been able to make a step change in innovation in secondary packaging machinery.

Design and functional characteristics A higher hygiene standard, an open profile with safe and easy entry, a flexible frame and reduced footprint, energy saving engineering, optimised system design and components selection to reduce energy consumption, quick user-friendly tool-less changeover and reduced start-up time after changeover are just some of the design and functional characteristics of Cama’s secondary packaging machinery. With a footprint of less than five by three meters, the Cama monoblock iF296 provides a turn-key option for case packing 120 tubs per minute. The infeed is positively handled by a set of dedicated pucks, holding the product in a stable position and avoiding any contact between the tubs which can be detrimental to the product’s aesthetics. Integrated box forming and closing, a dedicated station for plastic blister feeding and the capability to load products upright and upside-down, according to the presentation required, are features that make this machine a cost-effective solution to prepare shipping cases and SRPs.

A future-proof machine The added value of Cama’s packaging department, working in collaboration with the customer’s engineering and marketing teams, provide finished products with excellent shelf appeal while keeping their production cost-effective from an automation point of view. This benefit sets the Cama monoblock iF296 apart as a futureproof machine, capable of being readapted to different sizes, collations and configurations. •

Sustainable ways to reach your beauty destination Sustainability in the beauty industry is far more complex than simply formulating with natural or naturally derived ingredients. Today, it focuses on manufacturing processes, ethics and traceability in the supply chain, minimising waste to have zero impact and shows a clear shift away from synthetic chemicals to incorporate more organic and biodegradable options in new product development.

LABELLING

Calculating the cost of producing labels Buying a label printer is an investment not an expense. This is why it’s crucial to understand the total cost of ownership for a label printer. NSI 4 Africa explains how a quality label printer ticks all the boxes.

W

hen buying a label printer, one needs to consider how important it is to know the cost per label

and production volume. Most businesses looking to invest in equipment don’t realise it’s often the consumption of ink/ toner and consumables rather than the price of the equipment that determines the real cost of any label printer. The cheapest machines can end up being the costliest when the actual quantities of labels required are taken into account. Investing in a label printer is not an expense. Investments and expenses are two different things. Expenses are necessary – they cost money but are obligatory or useful for a business to function efficiently. Investments usually involve a capital
