In a provincial Iranian town, the children work hard to support their families. One day nine-year-old Yahya and his friend Leyla find a precious statue.
The premise is that the great Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, having boycotted the 2017 Oscars in protest at Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban, cannot be there in person to pick up his Oscar for ‘The Salesman’. But the producer bringing it to Iran for him manages to lose it after a chaotic mishap involving a taxi and a careless postman. The awestruck kids attempt to return it to its owner. There is something of a free-spirited innocence here, and the film is reminiscent of British classics such as ‘Local Hero’ or ‘Whisky Galore’. A story of magic being found in the most unlikely of places. (Subtitles)

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: DENMARK GODLAND VANSKABTE LAND
At the end of the 19th century, a young Danish priest is sent to a remote part of Iceland. The deeper he travels into the Icelandic landscape, the more he loses a sense of his own reality, his mission and his sense of duty.
The struggle between the strictures of religion and our own brute animal nature plays out amid the beautifully forbidding landscapes of remote Iceland in this stunning psychological epic from director Hlynur Pálmason. In the late 19th century, Danish priest Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove) makes the perilous trek to Iceland’s south-eastern coast with the intention of establishing a church. There, the arrogant man of God finds his resolve tested as he confronts the harsh terrain, temptations of the flesh, and the reality of being an intruder in an unforgiving land. Absolutely breathtaking cinematography captures the unassuming beauty of Iceland. (Subtitles)

As well as bringing Vermeer’s works together, both the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis in The Hague have conducted research into Vermeer’s artistry, his artistic choices and motivations for his compositions, as well as the creative process behind his paintings. “We would not have thought it possible that so many museums are willing to lend their masterpieces. With this exhibition we can introduce a new generation to Vermeer’s paintings...” Taco Dibbits, Director of the Rijksmuseum.

To accompany our Vermeer Exhibition on Screen, we are delighted to offer a chance to see the visually stunning adaptation of Tracy Chevalier’s bestseller.
When her father goes blind, Griet (Scarlett Johansson) must go to work as a maid for painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). When wealthy patron Van Ruijven (Tom Wilkinson) begins to lust after Griet, and commissions a painting of her, Vermeer and Griet are obliged to spend long hours alone together. We begin the ’Three Colours Trilogy’ with ‘Blue’, Juliette Binoche’s haunting study of grief.
After living through a tragic car crash that claimed the life of her composer husband and young daughter, her initial reaction is to withdraw from her relationships, lock herself in her apartment and suppress her pain. But avoiding human interactions on the bustling streets of Paris proves impossible, and she eventually meets up with Olivier (Benoît Régent), an old friend who harbours a secret love for her, and who could draw her back to reality. ‘Blue’ is a movie that engages the mind, challenges the senses, implores a resolution, and tells, with aesthetic grace and formal elegance, a good story and a political allegory. THREE COLOURS WHITE
TROIS COULEURS: BLANC
Perhaps the most overlooked of Kieslowski’s seminal trilogy, this bleak but ultimately hopeful comedy is arguably the most accessible.
Polish immigrant Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) finds himself out of a marriage, a job and a country when his French wife, Dominique (Julie Delpy), divorces him after six months due to his impotence. Forced to leave France after losing the business they jointly owned, Karol enlists fellow Polish expatriate to smuggle him back to their homeland. After successfully returning, Karol begins to build his new life, while never forgetting his old one. It’s often cruel, of course, and cool as an ice-pick, but it’s still endowed with enough unsentimental humanity to end with a touching, lyrical admission of the power of love. Essential viewing. THE COW WHO SANG A SONG INTO THE FUTURE
LA VACA QUE CANTÓ UNA CANCIÓN HACIA EL FUTURO
When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. A hauntingly beautiful Chilean fable.
Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future. Thankfully, Francisca Alegría’s feature debut manages to be enduringly moving and hopeful instead of angry and pessimistic. This is a languidly paced art films, but it’s a rare treat to watch a film that’s deliberate, enigmatic, and easy to recommend. Even if you’re not sure what’s happening, Alegria’s film never loses your focus. (Subtitles)

RAGING BULL
Returning to cinemas in a brand new 4K restoration, Scorsese’s searing masterpiece centres around De Niro’s portrayal of a brutal sportsman.
With this stunningly visceral portrait of self-destructive machismo, Martin Scorsese created one of the truly great and visionary works of modern cinema. Robert De Niro pours his blood, sweat and brute physicality into the Oscar-winning role of Jake La Motta, the rising middleweight boxer from the Bronx whose furious ambition propels him to success within the ring but whose unbridled paranoia and jealousy tatter his relationships with everyone in his orbit, including his brother and manager (Joe Pesci) and his gorgeous, streetwise wife (Cathy Moriarty). Michael Chapman’s extraordinarily tactile black-and-white cinematography, and Frank Warner’s ingenious sound design combine to make ‘Raging Bull’ a uniquely powerful exploration of violence on multiple levels – physical, emotional, psychic and spiritual.

THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY
Harold Fry is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the sidelines, until he goes to post a letter one day... and just keeps walking. Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton star. Harold (Broadbent) discovers that a former friend and colleague of twenty years ago, Queenie Hennessy, has cancer and is in a hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The doctors say there is nothing to be done for her. Instead of posting his feeble letter of condolence, Harold instead embarks on a 600-mile walk from Devon to Berwickupon-Tweed, believing that in some way his journey will help his friend to live. “Tell her I’m going to keep walking and she must keep living,” he says to the operator before embarking on his journey. Without maps or waterproofs and only yachting shoes on his feet, he walks and walks, while his wife Maureen (Wilton) waits at home; at first angered by what she perceives as abandonment but eventually his distance allows her emotions to resurface. Remembering her husband as he once was and everything he once meant to her. On his journey he reflects on his life, nature and the humanity of the people he meets. Based on the 2013 Booker long-listed novel by Rachel Joyce, this is sentimental but not cloying and will no doubt have you rummaging for your tissues.

A smart, funny and heart-warming new rom-com set over the course of one day in south London.
Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson), two twentysomethings both reeling from bad break-ups, connect over the course of an eventful day in South London – helping each other deal with their nightmare exes, and potentially restoring their faith in romance. This is a joyously breezy and entertaining watch, with striking visuals and richly charismatic performances from relative newcomers. The rom-com has lapsed into such an anaemic state that ‘Rye Lane’ feels like a miracle. Here is an entry into the genre that does not surrender to thinkpiece-ready neuroticism. Instead, it leaves you with a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

A London-set anarchic action comedy that follows Ria Khan, a bolshy schoolgirl and martial artist-in-training who dreams of becoming a world-renowned stunt woman.

When Ria witnesses her big sister Lena give up on her dreams by dropping out of art school and getting engaged, Ria’s world is shaken. She believes she must save her sister from the shackles of marriage in the only way she knows how, by enlisting the help of her friends and attempting to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of freedom and sisterhood. ‘Polite Society’ throws, kicks and punches the genre etiquette book out the window to deliver a fun film that blends Bollywood splendour and British wryness.

LES TROIS MOUSQUETAIRES: D’ARTAGNAN
Based on Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 literary masterpiece, we follow the heroic D’Artagnan who joins the three loyal musketeer friends, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, in a plot to overthrow an evil royal advisor. Featuring Vincent Cassel and Eva Green.

Benoît Magimel’s French high commissioner confronts the end of his personal Eden in Tahiti, in Albert Serra’s distinctive film. Serra’s epic is narratively sparse and visually vast, filled with political paranoia and an apocalyptic despair. M. de Roller, the French high commissioner, strolls around with raffish entitlement in his rumpled white suit. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high-end ‘establishment’ as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially since a persistent rumour has been going around: the sighting of a submarine whose ghostly presence could herald the return of French nuclear testing. DON GIOVANNI MET OPERA
Aided by his ingenious librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart approached his operatic retelling of the Don Juan myth from a point of view that is neither tragic nor entirely comic, but rather light-hearted, urbane and ironic.
Tony Award–winning director of Broadway’s ‘A View from the Bridge’ and ‘West Side Story’, Ivo van Hove makes a major Met debut with a new take on Mozart’s tragicomedy, resetting the familiar tale of deceit and damnation in an abstract architectural landscape and shining a light into the dark corners of the story and its characters. Maestro Nathalie Stutzmann makes her Met debut conducting a star-studded cast led by baritone Peter Mattei as a magnetic Don Giovanni, alongside the Leporello of bass-baritone Adam Plachetka. This is the second of Mozart’s three operatic masterpieces being screened in Chichester monthly from April to June.

The exhibition was a smash-hit five-star success and brought a younger and more diverse audience to the museum. The film uses the exhibition as a launchpad to travel to Tokyo itself, and explore the art and artists of the city more fully. From acclaimed writer/director Jean-Paul Salomé and based on the book by Caroline Michel-Aguirre.

BEAU IS AFRAID
A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingenious new film from writer/director Ari Aster (‘Midsommer’).
Growing up in a small town with his mother and younger sister, Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) is haunted by a traumatic event from his past. His anxiety worsens when his mother starts dating a new man, and Beau becomes convinced that this man is dangerous. As Beau’s fears spiral out of control, he must confront his past and find a way to overcome his anxiety in order to protect his family. The film transforms out of the mundanity of reality and into a fantastical world of surrealism, all the while exploring the power of human connection.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: FRANCE FULL TIME À PLEIN TEMPS
A breathlessly tense portrait of modern labour, this French drama stars Laure Calamy as a single mother who hits her breaking point during a nationwide strike.
Single mother Julie (César award-winning actress Laure Calamy) works a gruelling job as a head chambermaid in a five-star Parisian hotel. Julie’s daily balance of commuting from her remote suburb into Paris, tenuous childcare and search for a new job to get her out of debt, becomes unmanageable during a paralyzing transport strike in Paris. Laure Calamy gives a one-woman show performance as she is front and centre for nearly every frame of the film. This relentless, heart-in-your-throat, ticking-clock thriller about precarious single-motherhood could not be more timely or more intimate. As real, and as recognizably stressful, as the genre gets. IL TROVATORE
THE ROYAL OPERA
Adele Thomas’s energetic staging sets Verdi’s tale in a Hieronymus Bosch-inspired universe of medieval superstition. On the podium, Antonio Pappano conducts Verdi’s dramatic score, in the last event of this outstanding 2022/2023 season from the Royal Opera House.
Passions run high as Manrico and the Count di Luna compete for the affections of Leonora. Little do they know, Manrico’s mother Azucena has been keeping a terrible secret for decades. Soon a curse from the past will rise up from the ashes with devastating implications for them all. The dramatic score features the famous ‘Anvil Chorus.’ Cast: TBC (Leonora), Yusif Eyvazov (Manrico), Ludovic Tézier (Count di Luna), Jamie Barton (Azucena), Roberto Tagliavini (Ferrando). Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

BOOKING REF
When ‘Fleabag’ was first released in 2019 it was a smash hit and rapidly became the highest grossing UK Event Cinema title of all time. It recently won ‘Event Cinema Release of the Decade’, so we are delighted to give audiences across the country another chance to watch Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s iconic one-woman show. Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Vicky Jones, ‘Fleabag’ is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Playing to sold-out audiences in New York and London, don’t miss your chance to see this “legitimately hilarious show” (New Yorker).
