We often hear a lot of negativity about Newport but we’ve been inspired by people in our area who are trying to do something beneficial in the community.
It’s all too easy to sit back. We wanted to do something positive It’s all too easy to sit back and add to the negativity, so we wanted to do something really positive to help Newport return stronger than ever and to help those who work hard, volunteer and organise local activities. So here it is, our first issue of newport vision, a monthly magazine that is the perfect blend of information, editorials and advertisements from local businesses and service providers and much more. The magazine is supported by our website and social media pages where you can keep up to date on current activities and offers. We believe that our ‘Vision’ is something that is already shared by many of our city’s residents, so to be involved, whether you are a company that would like to advertise, a student that would like to write, a photographer with pictures you’d like to see published or simply have a story worth telling, get in touch and become part of newport vision.

MAKING VAT RETURNS EASY Most small business owners dread VAT time, leaving it to the last minute or risking divorce by making their long-suffering spouse do a job they don’t understand or have the time to do. Why not enjoy your evenings by delegating to an expert? It’s not as expensive as you think and we can relieve you of the stress and headache. If you still want to do your own VAT, use a modern system that does the job for you. If you use low-cost accounting software you can produce the VAT returns at the click of your mouse. Why spend hours drowning in bits of paper, trying to download mislaid bank statements or making corrupt spreadsheets balance? Speak to us without cost or obligation about how we can help you make your life easier by removing VAT as a source of stress.

Michael Flynn
Manager of Newport County AFC
This month Newport Vision talks to Michael Flynn,Manager of Newport County AFC . Flynn, or better known as ‘Flynny’ to friends, was appointed the role on the 9th March this year with a tough job ahead. Only a few weeks ago football professionals and County’s own supporters alike thought Newport’s hopes of football league survival were all but lost with the team 11 points adrift from maintaining their position in League Two. But after a remarkable turnaround in form and on the final day of the season, culminating in Hartlepool’s loss and Newport’s win over Notts County, Flynn led one of the most unlikely escapes from relegation in Newport County’s history. 08 newport vision July 2017
Flynn led one of the most unlikely escapes from relegation in Newport County’s history.
So Michael we think huge congratulations are in order! Can you tell us how it felt to win the match? Amazing, it was a well deserved win for the team. The biggest challenge now is achieving my own ambitions to take Newport County to a higher level and take it as far as we can go. When you got the news of being offered Manager who was the first person called? Wayne Hatswell, my Assistant Manager. My wife was next to me at the time so I didn’t have to call her first! We know you’ve received much praise and many congratulatory messages but whose meant the most to you? I had so many and it really means a lot, it would be unfair to single out just one. Where would you like to see County in 5 years’ time? I’d love to see Newport challenging at the top end of League one with the club successful off the pitch too. Growing the club as a whole is my goal. Did you always want to be a footballer? Yes, it was always my dream. I have loved football for as far back I can remember. I started out at Newport in 1999 when I was 18 before moving to Barry Town in 2000 and it went from there. Who inspired you when you were growing up? I loved Maradona and Steven Gerrard.
Who is the most famous person you have played with or against? I’ve played with Leighton Baines who played for Everton in the Premier League and Jimmy Bullard against Deco when we played against Porto. What is your biggest sporting accomplishment? There’s been a few having been professional for as long as I was the promotions with Wigan and of course Newport, but I would have to say keeping Newport in the league when we were pretty much written off is arguably my biggest to date. What would your advice be to Newport’s next generation of budding footballers looking to make it their career? Work hard and keep believing in your dreams. As long as you give your all every day, you can look yourself in the mirror and say you gave it your best shot. What’s your fondest memory of Newport whilst growing up? Community, and how everyone looked out for each other. Growing up in Pill was tough, I lived with my Aunty Sheila and Uncle Ted who kept me on the straight and narrow, and taught me respect. but with people like Norman Parselle giving you advise it was crucial.
What would you say is the biggest change in Newport since you were a child? I think culturally it’s different, particularly the social aspect. Lots of pubs have closed down which used to bring people together. I think there is a divide now in the community and a general lack of respect from a lot, but not all, youngsters these days, which is a shame. I hope the divide will improve as Newport regenerates itself further. Who’s the most famous person in your call list? Thierry Henry, the man is a legend on and off the pitch. What was the last picture you took on your phone? It’s actually a picture of me and my wife Victoria with Thierry Henry.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF/gas 4). Line a muffin tin with 10 paper cases. In a large bowl, combine the almond milk and apple cider vinegar. In a small glass or bowl, make a flax egg: mix the ground flaxseed and water together. Set both the milk mixture and the flax egg to the side and let sit for at least 10 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flours, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Toss the cherries into the flour mixture and make sure they are coated with flour. Add the maple syrup, flax egg and vanilla and almond extracts to the large bowl with the almond milk mixture. Begin to combine the flour and cherry mix into the bowl of liquids a little at a time, stirring as you go. Do your best to not overstir to keep the cherries whole. When the mixture is combined, pour in the coconut oil and give it another stir. Fill each paper case with 60 ml batter. Garnish the top of each one with a cherry half and, if you like, some slivered or crushed almonds to fancy them up. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until a fork or toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool the muffins on a wire rack (if you have one) before serving. Store them in an airtight container for up to a few days. newport vision July 2017 13

Thai Beef Noodle Salad I love Thai food and whenever I travel to Thailand this salad is the first thing I order when I arrive. It’s also a great lunch to prep the night before and take to work in a lunch box. Method Melt the coconut oil in a frying pan over a high heat. When really, really hot, season your steak and carefully lay it in the pan. Fry for 4 minutes on each side for medium rare, then leave to rest until you’re ready to eat.
In a large bowl toss together all of the remaining ingredients then pour over the dressing and toss once more to coat the ingredients. Pile the noodle salad high on a plate, then slice up the steak and serve on top.Yum.
A great lunch to make ahead and eat post-workout
While the steak is cooking, mix together the lime juice, fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil and chilli and set aside.
Ingredients ½ tbsp coconut oil 1 x 240g sirloin steak, trimmed salt and pepper juice of 1 lime 1 tbsp fish sauce 2 tsp light soy sauce ½ tsp sesame oil 1 red chilli, finely chopped 2 spring onions, finely sliced ¼ red pepper, de-seeded and finely sliced ¼ cucumber, de-seeded and sliced into thin half-moons ½ carrot, thinly sliced ½ mango, roughly chopped into cubes or slices 220g pre-cooked thin rice noodles handful of coriander, small handful of mint, roughly chopped Serves 1

Savour the flavour… at Hatti Indian Restaurant
I’ve passed the building many times but have never felt an immediate urge to venture inside. I’d also not heard much about the place since it opened almost two years ago now to entice me to give it a try however on approach we immediately recognised the 5 star hygiene rating which is always reassuring to see. We were then greeted on arrival by Sayel who was our waiter for the evening and escorted us to our table. As you enter there are just a few steps opening on to the bar and waiting area with restaurant seating to either side. The décor is very modern and contemporary with a twist, styled in crisp white and cream paintwork with black accents and ice blue lighting for ambiance.

A good Indian meal almost always starts with a poppadom and chutney tray to share. On first impressions it’s clear at Hatti they like to do things a little different. The poppadoms were delivered to our table in individual baskets filled with misshaped poppadum curls with a tray of eight different chutneys including mint sauce, the chef ’s special mint sauce (similar to raita), mango chutney, hot mango, tomato chutney, onion salad, marinated onions and dried coconut. The flavours were light, crisp and fresh.
On first impressions It’s clear at Hatti they like to do things a little different
We ordered the Tandoori Delight (£5.95) appetiser which was a mix platter of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, sheek kebab and lamb chop. This was a dish for one but more than enough to share. The meat was extremely tender and well marinated with a lovely grainy texture from the spices giving depth to the flavour. Then for the main event – we order the Chicken Karahi, a typical choice for us when eating out at Indian restaurants, and the Coriander and Basil Tiger Prawns (£13.95) from the Chef ’s Specials. First to arrive were the prawns in an intriguing smoke filled dome. The smell on lifting the lid was fantastic and was really well presented with sizeable meaty butterflied prawns seasoned with a blend of fresh basil, spices and yoghurt. The dish was accompanied by an ample portion of pilau rice and masala sauce.
The Chicken Karahi is a spice sensation curry cooked with onions, peppers, tomato and ginger with crushed coriander seeds. This dish did not disappoint. Again the depth of flavour in these dishes was a triumph which can only be down to using the freshest spices and herbs. The prawns had a delicate smokey flavour similar to their aroma. Our meal was complimented with a garlic and coriander nan – again the nan had that signature subtle smokiness combined with the freshest chopped coriander and mild garlic. Everything about our meal was excellent from the food itself to the overall experience.
Hatti was an unexpected delight and comes highly recommended. The drinks menu had a good range of beers, cider and spirts, a handful of traditional cocktails and a fairly extensive wine list from your standard glass of house wine to champagne by the bottle, including my personal favourite Prosecco at £20.95 a bottle.
Our bill came to just over £53 including two alcoholic drinks. A fair price taking in to consideration the quality of the food, fresh flavoursome ingredients, attentive staff and overall experience. Their takeaway menu offers the same range of dishes at a slightly reduced price available for collection only also.
Whether you’re looking for a tasty treat at home or a venue for a special occasion, Hatti was an unexpected delight and comes highly recommended.

Newport - a city to behold
Newport is the gateway between England and Wales covering a geographical area of just over 73.5 square miles. A vibrant, forward-thinking and multicultural city with its very own unique atmosphere. Newport is rich in industrial heritage, dating back to the nineteenth century when its strategic importance of location was first recognised. After losing some of its core industries, the city is successfully proving that it can re-establish and adapt itself as a centre of modern industry and commerce. Education Leavers Successfully Getting Into Employment
Whilst 2017 has whizzed from January to May in a blink of an eye it has surprisingly brought with it some good news, less unemployment and more job vacancies! From January to March 2017 the UK had 767,000 job vacancies. This was 16,000 more than the last quarter of 2016 and 14,000 more than for a year earlier. So this is great for everyone right? Young adults are better educated on leaving school than ever before. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate for those aged from 16 to 24 has been consistently higher than that for older age groups. Not only are they more likely to be

unemployed but even when in work, young adults are very likely to be low paid. Across the UK, young adult poverty has risen by more than any other age group in the last decade. But how can that be?
Are employers looking for employee’s with more experience? How do we ensure our 16-24 year olds are recruited?
There were 826,000 young people (aged 16 to 24) in the UK who were not in education, employment or training for October to December 2016, 60,000 aged 16 to 17 and 766,000 aged 18 to 24. Working From Home
I started my business in 2011 at the age of 21. I was a single mum to my little boy. I started my business in 2011 at the age of 21. I was a single mum to my little boy Tyler who was two years old and I was working full time for a large retail chain. There was never anything wrong with my life, I had great friends and family and a job that paid a wage that covered my bills, but there was always something missing and I just didn’t know what. My bosses were amazing but working full time had no flexibility for me as a mum with a young child, and I really struggled to pay for childcare costs. I was basically working just for pride to say I was but had no money once everything was paid. I didn’t even know where to start, and that’s when I found a chance to shine and earn a corporate income with full training and support. For the past six years I have not only built a global business and
a corporate income that surpasses anything I could have ever imagined but travelled the world with the company. It has also allowed me to privately educate my eldest and drive my dream cars, have our dream wedding and have the time to have two more children, Miles who will be one soon and one more on the way, I love being a stay at home mum with them but also love that I don’t have to sacrifice a career to do that. More importantly to me, I have had the last few years building myself, which I know is invaluable and something I could never put a price on. I have lots of friends and people who are sceptical about what I do, but that’s natural, how can you earn such a phenomenal income working from home and truly enjoy it? it doesn’t seem real, right? But it is and you can work from home flexible for a fantastic income.
There was never anything wrong with my life, I had great friends and family and a job that paid a wage Interested, then please contact me for more information.
