LOCAL BUSINESSES - LOCAL EVENTS - LOCAL PEOPLE Positively Encouraging Growth and Prosperity

Lela - The left hand
B Leanne - The right hand
We often hear a lot of negativity about Newport but we’ve been inspired by people in our area who are trying to do something beneficial in the community.
It’s all too easy to sit back. We wanted to do something positive It’s all too easy to sit back and add to the negativity, so we wanted to do something really positive to help Newport return stronger than ever and to help those who work hard, volunteer and organise local activities. So here it is, our first issue of Newport Vision, a monthly magazine that is the perfect blend of information, editorials and advertisements from local businesses and service providers and much more. The magazine is supported by our website and social media pages where you can keep up to date on current activities and offers. We believe that our ‘Vision’ is something that is already shared by many of our city’s residents, so to be involved, whether you are a company that would like to advertise, a student that would like to write, a photographer with pictures you’d like to see published or simply have a story worth telling, get in touch and become part of Newport Vision.

The Dangers of DIY Tax What with all these bank holidays when the weather is still under par it’s an ideal time for that traditional British bank holiday activity DIY - but just how far should you go with DIY? Some try all sorts of things, moving beyond gardening and building jobs to Tax Returns. What we hear often from business owners is that they can’t afford accountant’s fees. There’s three reasons why this is a fallacy:
01 More often than not, the cost of not claiming all allowable deductions is soon outweighed in additional tax paid. Do you know everything you can claim against tax?
careful about HMRC late filing penalties. It’s difficult for non-professionals to keep up the numerous 02 Be filing dates, whether Corporation Tax, Income Tax, PAYE or VAT. It doesn’t take more than a couple of late filing penalties to exceed the accountancy costs. rules are getting increasingly complex and even HMRC can’t keep up with the frequent and often 03 Tax pointless tinkering changes. If you get it wrong not knowing tax law is no excuse and HMRC just love piling on penalties and interest which can accumulate to alarming levels way in excess of our fees. So, this year, take a minute and think logically. Why not relax and let us relieve you of the stress? Our known up-front fees are a lot less than you think!

As wedding season approaches top tips for the Mother of the Bride
Make up Expert
Her speciality is in Bridal & Special Occasion make-up but is also gifted and experienced in fashion, editorial and behind the screens in film and TV. Her recent TV and film portfolio includes Jericho, Peaky Blinders, Downton Abbey and Alice in Wonderland 2 I frequently get asked by mother’s of brides and grooms how to get their skin glowing for the big day, so I thought as wedding season is here I’d let you into a few tips I’ve picked up over the years.
Start by prepping your skin and invest in a good primer. Start by prepping your skin and invest in a good primer. You just need a pea-sized amount on your fingertip and spread into the skin. There are many to choose from with a variety of price tags but if you’re splashing out for the special day, Smashbox Pore Minimising Primer is great for oily skin Laura Mercier radiance primer for adding illumination to dull skin One of my all time favourites is a combined moisturising primer-Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré
Primers
B
Shevaun is a passionate, professional and artistically creative make-up artist whose attention to detail and ability to produce a flawless face is well known and has greatly contributed to her success as a well recognised make-up artist.
Firstly, you need to choose products that work for your skin type. For instance, if you have dry skin, a matte foundation isn’t the best as it’s more likely to dry your skin out and cling to flaky areas. Again, a dewy look for oily skin won’t last all day.
Smashbox Pore Minimising Primer £28 30ml
Laura Mercier radiance primer £30 50ml
MAC Strobe Cream £25 50ml
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré £13 30ml
For instant radiance, invest in a good liquid illuminator. You can put a tiny amount to your cheekbones - under or over your foundation, or mix it in with your foundation or moisturiser to give you a soft glow. My personal favourite is the new MAC Strobe Cream in Peachlite. When speaking to more mature ladies, a common mistake is they feel the need to use a heavy foundation to cover fine and deep lines. Using a sheer, illuminating foundation to reflect light gives better results and detracts attention away from lines. My kit essentials are Chanel Vitalumiere and Armani Lumious Silk. If you’re worried about coverage in certain areas due to uneven skin tone or blemishes just use a higher coverage concealer - there’s no need to mask the whole face if
B
Another great tip to brighten up your skin is a cream blush product. It’s much more radiant than a powder blush,
Bobbi Brown Calypso Coral £21 3.7g
MAC Posey £16
there’s only a few little areas you have concerns over. A good buy is the MAC Studio Fix Concealer. Use with a warm ring finger and pat over the area until blended in. Another great tip to brighten up your skin is a cream blush product. It’s much more radiant than a powder blush, therefore gives a more youthful, dewy appearance. Bobbi Brown Calypso Coral and MAC Posey are very popular. Apply with fingertips lightly to blend or alternatively use a brush. Lots of my clients get confused between an under eye concealer and a skin concealer. An under eye concealer should be a thinner consistency and more hydrating.
Chanel Vitalumiere £30 30ml
Over the years I mostly hear concerns about dark circles. Lots of women think in order to cover them you must apply multiple layers of white concealer.
Lots of my clients get confused between an under eye concealer and a skin concealer. This will leave you with a caked look under the eyes and greyish in colour which isn’t flattering and can give off a gaunt looking effect. The trick is to use a corrector colour over the bluish colour of the circle and blend. For instance, my favourite at the moment is the NARS creamy concealer blended in with a brush or finger and then the Armani master corrector 01 again with a brush or finger. All prices correct at time of printing

Eat Clean Sounds mean? Eating clean doesn’t have to be mean with this cracking little recipe. If you’re anything like me, when you get home from work slaving over the cooker is the last thing you want. Busy lives and little leisure time makes convenience food far more appealing but if you’re health conscious and trying to eat a balanced and nutritious diet you want to be able to knock up something quickly that still tastes good. Eating clean doesn’t mean ‘no naughties’ it just means eating fresh, natural and unprocessed foods - so this little beauty ticks all the boxes!
Creamy Steak with Garlic and Spinach Sauce Ingredients olive oil 1 x sirloin steak with all fat removed salt & pepper 1 clove of crushed garlic or a tspn of lazy garlic 200g chopped mushrooms splash of white wine 5 large handfuls of spinach leaves 100ml double cream Serves 2
Method Heat a frying pan over a high heat. Drizzle 1 tbsp of oil to the steaks and season. Cook for 3 mins on each side (medium rare increase cooking time if you prefer). Let it rest on a plate whilst you cook your creamy sauce. Pour in the remaining oil, and place on a medium heat. Then add 1 clove of crushed garlic or a tspn of lazy garlic to the pan with the mushrooms cook until lightly coloured. Season and turn up the heat. Add white wine and let it bubble away to almost nothing. Add spinach and gently turn until fully wilted. Pour in cream and let it bubble up. If this recipe is still not naughty enough for you a serve with some creamy butter mash or on a bed of fragrant rice.

Mamma Lina’s A little piece of Italia right here in Newport
Here at Newport Vision we’d been hearing positive things about a new Italian restaurant that’s recently opened so we decided to give it a whirl for ourselves.
The drinks menu offered a good selection of wines, beers, continental lager and an array of cocktails – something for everyone’s preference. The cocktails were presented nicely and we can vouch for their potency!
B
On arrival we were greeted with a warm reception from the staff with authentic Italian roots. We were intrigued by the grandness of the building and inviting bar area where the staff were very attentive. The restaurant was perfectly arranged to seat both intimate diners in small groups yet also accommodate larger parties easily without losing the ambience or encroaching in to each other’s space.
On being seated we were presented with a varied menu with some great Starters to choose from including my personal favourite, king prawns in white wine and garlic – Gamberoni all’Aglio. Mains featured the typical pastas, risottos and pizza dishes as well as a number of interesting meat and fish dishes including veal and lamb, something for everyone’s palate.
B
Mamma Lina’s Restaurant & Cocktail Bar opened its doors back in November last year, located on Tregwilym Road, Rogerstone. Situated in a newly renovated large old building which some years ago was the working mens club across the way from the former Alcan site.
For starter we ordered the Calamari and Saliccia Italiana itialian sausage sauté in garlic, wine, chilli and tomatoes. All were brought to our table in a timely manner with a smile. All were delicious and light so a good start to our meal.
For Main we sampled the traditional Lasagne al Forno which was baked to perfection, firm and rich in flavour. I ordered Spaghetti Pollo e Funghi, a dish I’ve had many times and often been disappointed. Safe to say there was no disappointment here. A generous portion with a tasty thick and creamy sauce full of flavour with plenty of chicken and mushroom. We also ordered the Agnello Balsamico – Welsh rack of lamb cooked in balsamic vinegar and red wine, accompanied with fresh vegetables and sauté potatoes. The lamb was to die for.
25
I’m not much of a dessert person but we thought it would be rude not to sample the lemon cheesecake and traditional tiramisu. Again, no complaints here with more than ample portions and great flavour. Starters range from £4.95 - £8.95, Pizzas and Mains start at £8.95 up to £16.95 for a 10oz Sirloin or the Lamb.
We were very happy with our visit and felt the final bill was reasonable based the variety, quality of the food and service and general overall experience, nice for a treat or a special occasion. Afterwards we were keen to learn more about Mamma Lina’s so we had a chat with the lovely Laura (pronounced ‘Low-ra’), one of the owners who gave us the grand tour. The building itself has much character and charm, stylishly decorated and is somewhat of a tardis. Upstairs is sizeable where they can seat more diners or can be hired out for functions. On weekends they also offer free live entertainment for which you can find a full listing on their website. Sunday roast menu starting at £9.95.
I’m not much of a dessert person but we thought it would be rude not to sample them. Safe to say Mamma Lina’s offers that something a little extra and brings authenticity and a small piece of Italy to us right here in Newport. And if that wasn’t enough they offer Italian stone baked pizzas to go - that’s always a winner in my book! If you haven’t already, give this little gem a try for yourself - Buon Appetito!

City Deals
and what do they mean for Newport?
City Deals are run by UK Government, Welsh Government and local authorities. They are a way of providing funding for future investment and improved infrastructure, working together with surrounding local authorities to maximise opportunities, economic growth and a sustainable future. On the 31st January this year Newport City Council joined the City Deal programme, which will see ÂŁ1.2billion invested in the regional economy.
31
?
The City Deal will help boost economic growth in ten local authority areas, including Newport, by improving transport links, increasing skills, helping people into work and giving businesses the support they need to grow. Through this programme, the ten local authority leaders are to join up decision making, pool resources, and partner with businesses. Each of the local authorities will formally approve a Regional Cabinet comprising of the relevant local authority leaders who must then also be approved by the Welsh and UK Governments, who will oversee the region’s economic growth and delivery of the proposals under the City Deal.
“We can now plan ahead with two decades of economic investment certainty in our sights. I look forward to closely working with fellow Leaders in making the deal a success and being part of a team that will deliver innovation, investment and development.”
Each of the 10 authorities must commit to the investment of £120million over the lifetime of the 20 year project. Part of the investment includes £734m for the creation of a South East Wales Metro transport scheme. The leader of Newport City Council, Debbie Wilcox, spoke of the importance of and opportunities that this deal brings for Newport and the wider area: Central to the success of a City Deal is the close collaboration and partnership between the ten local authorities. I am very pleased that today my colleagues across all political parties have shown their support for what promises to be a generational game changer for Newport and the whole region. We can now plan ahead with two decades of economic investment certainty in our sights. I look forward to closely working with fellow Leaders in making the deal a success and being part of a team that will deliver innovation, investment and development.” A high level proposition document will be compiled to outline the key aims and objectives of the deal and the process it will take which is likely to take up to 12 months to complete so stay tuned for updates in the coming months.

Education Leavers Successfully Getting Into Employment Whilst 2017 has whizzed from January to May in a blink of an eye it has surprisingly brought with it some good news, less unemployment and more job vacancies! From January to March 2017 the UK had 767,000 job vacancies. This was 16,000 more than the last quarter of 2016 and 14,000 more than for a year earlier. So this is great for everyone right? Young adults are better educated on leaving school than ever before. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate for those aged from 16 to 24 has been consistently higher than that for older age groups. Not only are they more likely to be
unemployed but even when in work, young adults are very likely to be low paid. Across the UK, young adult poverty has risen by more than any other age group in the last decade. But how can that be?
Are employers looking for employee’s with more experience? How do we ensure our 16-24 year olds are recruited?
There were 826,000 young people (aged 16 to 24) in the UK who were not in education, employment or training for October to December 2016, 60,000 aged 16 to 17 and 766,000 aged 18 to 24. Working From Home
I started my business in 2011 at the age of 21. I was a single mum to my little boy. I started my business in 2011 at the age of 21. I was a single mum to my little boy Tyler who was two years old and I was working full time for a large retail chain. There was never anything wrong with my life, I had great friends and family and a job that paid a wage that covered my bills, but there was always something missing and I just didn’t know what. My bosses were amazing but working full time had no flexibility for me as a mum with a young child, and I really struggled to pay for childcare costs. I was basically working just for pride to say I was but had no money once everything was paid. I didn’t even know where to start, and that’s when I found a chance to shine and earn a corporate income with full training and support. For the past six years I have not only built a global business and
a corporate income that surpasses anything I could have ever imagined but travelled the world with the company. It has also allowed me to privately educate my eldest and drive my dream cars, have our dream wedding and have the time to have two more children, Miles who will be one soon and one more on the way, I love being a stay at home mum with them but also love that I don’t have to sacrifice a career to do that. More importantly to me, I have had the last few years building myself, which I know is invaluable and something I could never put a price on. I have lots of friends and people who are sceptical about what I do, but that’s natural, how can you earn such a phenomenal income working from home and truly enjoy it? it doesn’t seem real, right? But it is and you can work from home flexible for a fantastic income.
There was never anything wrong with my life, I had great friends and family and a job that paid a wage Interested, then please contact me for more information.
