to our vision Welcome to the May edition of Newport Vision. Our regular readers will see that, as all good companies should, we have evolved. We have gone Square! After carrying out some market research we spied a gap in the market – namely that whilst; Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire all have luxury lifestyle magazines Newport did not. Enter Newport Vision……. We have been to Newport’s latest hot spot at The Celtic Manor, The Mulberry Bar. We had heard that it was the place to head but it exceeded even our expectations followed by a meal at Steak on Six, read on for more details.

WELCOME TO THE MAY EDITION OF NEWPORT VISION. Featured on our front cover is Newport Rugby Titan and the Head of Engagement in the WRU, Ryan Jones. We caught up with him at The Vale Hotel recently and you can read more about him and his future goals inside. We have the second part to our Wedding Supplement full of beautiful venues and suppliers in our area as well as a gifts for the happy couple and a Groom’s Lust List for your 2018/19 wedding. Although we are an independent magazine and rely on advertisements to cover our running costs each month we nonetheless dedicate pages to start-up businesses and local charities.

We have been overwhelmed with the way in which Newport has embraced our magazine and we would like to thank you for inviting us into your homes, business and communities. If you are looking to attract an aspirational audience Newport Vision is the place for you. We print 15,000 copies of this magazine as well as our online presence. THE MULBERRY BAR AND STEAK ON SIX

@CELTIC MANOR RESORT

We began the evening in the new Mulberry Bar, a perfect stop off for a pre-dinner cocktail or glass of champagne. 08 NEWPORT VISION MAY 2018

Mulberry Bar We began the evening in the new Mulberry Bar, whether it’s an exclusive stop off for a pre-dinner cocktail, the perfect spot for an evening hideaway, or the excuse you needed for a glass of champagne, look no further than the sumptuous surroundings of the Mulberry Bar. Hidden away behind discreet glass doors, the décor is plush, the lighting is low and the atmosphere is decadent with plenty of champagne and gin to go around. We were greeted at the door by Alex who waited on us most of the evening. His knowledge of the drinks he was serving, everything from gin, champagne to whiskey and wine, and suggestions on what we might drink based on very little detail were beyond impressive. The glamourous pods for groups of up to sixteen were intimate without being isolated with plenty of room for a group to relax and enjoy the surrounding areas. There is a strict dress code, as well there should be. I’m not going to put my best on for a night with friends or a rare date night for someone to turn up in shorts and a hoodie. The theme throughout the bar and the resort for that matter is one of glamour and a 5* experience. Our evening was delightful, spoiled by the staff, not because we were the owners of a magazine but simply as guests. It was refreshing to be

met with such dedicated and knowledgeable staff that clearly take great pride in their work. The Signature Lounge The Signature lounge which is available exclusively to guests staying in the resort’s Signature Suites on the sixth floor. Here we were taken through the resort’s dining options that evening. The Signature Lounge is a bright and open room with floor to ceiling windows giving fantastic views over the Coldra Woods, and where Signature guests can enjoy unlimited free tea and coffee, newspapers and an adults-only space in which to relax. Next, it was the turn of restaurant Steak On Six, which opened in December 2015. With 70 covers, the Celtic Manor team’s aim was to create a restaurant with an upmarket feel, and the decor is certainly a talking point: think cowhide on the door and chairs, plenty of cow prints on the walls, and a fantastic mirror adorned with cow horns. Although such decor has the potential to be tacky, it’s been done well.

Steak On Six serves steaks originating from all over the British Isles, and was awarded two AA rosettes the week before our visit. I love the attention to detail too, from the variety of different steak knives from which diners can choose, to the selection of Welsh salts available on each table to accompany your meal. For our Starter we tried an authentic Iberian ham, Cerdo de Campo, which had been matured for up to three years and which was hand carved at our table before we transferred our attention to the Pan Fried Scallops with Braised Pork which were perfectly cooked and accompanied by a wonderful carrot puree. Given our location the Main Courses were always going to feature its namesake and so we sampled the exquisite Irish Beef Fillet and the Steak on Six Mixed Grill which is served with a half lobster seasoned with garlic butter and fresh herbs. Our meals were perfectly rounded off by a White Chocolate and Banana Panna Cotta and a selection of Welsh

cheeses served with oat crackers, chutney and fruits to cleanse the palate. For a woman that considers herself a steak connoisseur I can say without question this was one of the best steaks I have ever been served so much so the Head chef was called to the table to be offered the job as private chef at the Newport Vision headquarters, he politely refused but was extremely grateful for praise and clearly very proud of the dishes that left his kitchen. The service faultless, some could say 5* but honestly what else did we expect.

THE RYAN RYAN JONES RUGBY LEGEND

We sat down with the hugely respected former back-row forward who enjoyed a successful playing career with the Ospreys, winning four Six Nations titles and voted British and Irish Lions Player of the Series. Ryan, now that you are involved with rugby at a grassroots level. What have you taken from your own experiences? I firmly believe that sport is a fantastic vehicle for social good. Rugby has treated me and my family wonderfully and I am a product of that grassroots environment.

I then spent 14 years playing the game for a living which, whilst it is about as far removed from the community game as you can get, it made me realise just how important the game is both in Wales and across the globe. Do you have a specific approach when it comes to encouraging children to take up the sport? We are currently working with one of our partners who is developing a means of delivering the school curriculum through the medium of rugby and this will include both digital and physical literacy elements.

In my youth I played a lot of tennis, which was my first passion, before I took up football and then rugby, perhaps later than most, at Bassaleg School.

In the lead up to the World Cup next year we will focus on the history and culture of some of the teams who will be competing and we will be working with the Japanese Rugby Union with some legacy events.

I joined Risca Rugby Club then Newport RFC because Risca didn’t have a youth team at the time. I played at university during what was a great period of my life in which rugby was the constant thread.

My view is that we have an obligation to get children to be as active as they can be, whatever sport they are involved with, by offering the most flexible and inclusive format that we can.

12 NEWPORT VISION MAY 2018

You seem to be on a serious fitness mission yourself at the moment? Maybe -although it could just be the case of a middle aged man having a crisis! When I retired in May 2015, and after all of the emotion and sadness had passed at having to give up playing, I began to look upon it positively as a new chapter in my life. I had always enjoyed getting out on the bike and, due to the nature of my personality, so I set my sights high from the outset. However, bearing in mind that I had undergone a number of major shoulder and knee operations during my career, I had a chat with my consultant who told me that my plans were a bit optimistic!

MAN

That was all the motivation that I needed. and I ended up doing an Ultra Marathon the following February, running from Brecon to Cardiff, and later in the year I cycled from Pembroke to Bordeaux in time for Euro 2016 with The Prince’s Trust. What is the next challenge for you. I will be taking part in the first ever Newport Marathon. It is my home marathon on a flat course and the timing of the event sits perfectly with my training calendar. Being an international sportsman and Captain of your club and national team you must have had some amazing experiences.

A successful playing career with the Ospreys, winning four Six Nations titles with Wales and voted British and Irish Lions Player of the Series 2009.

LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 13

What stands out for you? Rugby introduced me to a world that I would never have known existed. I have travelled the world in First Class, stayed in amazing hotels, enjoyed the best food and wine, attended major sporting events, met royalty and I have even had VIP access at the Brit Awards! Aside from that, there have also been some more personal moments such as being able to celebrate winning the 2012 Grand Slam on the pitch at the Millennium Stadium (as it was then) with my son and my Dad. Now that you are more involved in the business world do you find that your sports career is a good or bad thing? I enjoy people’s company and it is part of my character to be sociable. Whether you are talking to a guy in the street or the Chief Executive of a company, I firmly believe that you have to be true to your values and so I try to make sure that I always give the best account of myself because, whilst it is a bit of a welltrodden cliché and whilst my rugby career is sometimes a welcome ice-breaker, ultimately people do business with people. What is your favourite country in the world? Good question. I love Mallorca as I have some really fond family memories of the place. New Zealand has got it all. I am a big fan of Australia, America and I love Canada.

14 NEWPORT VISION MAY 2018

Of course, I have spent so much time travelling around Wales recently that it has reminded me just how genuinely beautiful the country is particularly the Snowdonia National Park, the Gower (keep an eye out for my latest venture, ‘Gower Ice Cream’ this month) and the Pembrokeshire coast which are all absolutely breathtaking.

SUMMER ESSENTIALS MAKE-UP BY ALEX NIVEN

During the summer my skin completely changes and goes from being combination/ normal to super oily. My biggest concern is keeping my makeup on and not having it slide off my face after a few hours! Skincare really makes a difference when it comes to having flawless looking makeup. My favourite skincare product at the moment is the Glow Tonic by Pixi Beauty, I use it religiously morning and night. I’ve noticed a huge difference in the overall texture of my skin; my pores appear smaller and my makeup applies much more smoothly when I use it. When it comes to making my foundation last, I swear by the Fenty Beauty Pro Matte Filter Primer. It is lightweight and oil-controlling, and doesn’t clog my pores. My go-to foundation for summer is the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation. It gives your skin the most beautiful glow, but without being too shiny. Nobody wants to look like they’ve dipped their face in olive oil half way through the day!

With a medium to full coverage and 8 hour wear, I find myself reaching for this foundation more than any others I own. Once I have finished applying my makeup, I set everything with the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. It’s like hairspray for your face – and makes your makeup last forever! I also like to set my makeup with the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Powder. It’s super light-weight, silky, and never looks cakey. When I think of summer, the first thing that comes to mind is glowing, highlighted skin. My go-to product for getting a summer glow is the Iconic

London Illuminating Drops. They come in a range of colours suitable for all skin tones, and are such a versatile product to have in your makeup bag. You can mix a few drops in with foundation for a dewy look, or use them on top of your makeup as a liquid highlight. The formula is almost like a dry oil, it won’t separate makeup underneath but stays looking glowy all day. I love mixing a few drops into my body moisturiser and applying to my décolletage and legs for a night out. The shimmer in these drops look gorgeous on the skin!

Newport’s Celebrity Jeweller Let’s be brutally honest: in this world, looks matter.

Just as a beautiful woman or handsome well-dressed gentleman is more likely to draw your gaze than an unattractive one, and just as a prestigious brand is held in high esteem on the market, in the social sphere, luxury timepieces are widely respected and easily recognised by people who appreciate details and luxury. While flashy cars and over-priced champagne might scream a recent payday, luxury timepieces have come to epitomise wealth with an understated confidence that has nothing to prove. Most of us will select our luxury watches from a local store, however, the rich and famous in the UK, for some time now, have been opting for a more bespoke service. With luxury watch brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Backes & Strauss and Cartier, we are not only looking for a beautiful timepiece to show off as a subtle display of wealth, but also as an investment. 26 NEWPORT VISION MAY 2018

So, when spending anything between £10,000 and £200,000, it is no wonder we are looking for an expert to advise us on our luxury purchases. Ashley Smith of Timeless Watches has become the go-to guy for advice on which watch to buy and why. With over 15 years experience in new and pre-owned luxury watches Ashley specialises in bling like no other. He is now so well known in the industry that he is trusted by celebrities all over the UK to supply them with the best timepieces available.

Ashley’s passion for timepieces started when he was just 15 years old. He invested in a pocket watch for £150 and the rest, as they say, is history. He spent the next 10 years learning everything there was to know about these beautiful timekeeping instruments. Famous watchmaking companies like Audermars Piguet employ master horologists to put together their signature timepieces in their state-of-the-art Swiss facilities, where standards of craftsmanship are kept remarkably high. For instance, Patek Philippe’s timepieces are so intricate that they typically take between 10 months (for basic models) and 2 years (for extremely complex models) to be manufactured. Watchmaking truly is a work of art. This top-tier level of quality, in craftsmanship as well as material, ensures that luxury watches are able to reliably keep the time – often for decades or more – with only minor tune-ups being necessary every five years or so.

Ashley stocks only the very best pieces but likes to offer his clients a wide variety too. He offers Rolex, Cartier, Hublot, Patek Phillipe, Audermars Piguet, Breitling, Backes & Strauss and more. Ashley’s client list now runs to the hundreds with him supplying some of the UK’s most famous celebrities including premiere league footballers, professional boxers, singers, actors and actresses. They have come to trust not only Ashley’s discretion and professionalism but have found his service and knowledge to be simply unrivalled within the industry. Ashley has established such a strong client base that he has an office in Cardiff City FC grounds, one in Hatten Garden in London and one in Milan which he flies out to almost every week. One need only look at gold’s meteoric rise in value over the past decade to be reminded of the potential long-term value of jewellery pieces composed of

such precious metals. The skilled craftsmanship that is behind these pieces and the inherent value of the precious metals that go into them ensure incomparable durability, precision and retained value. The wearers of luxury timepieces are those who may quietly sport possessions that are synonymous with refined wealth, yet whose success remains tastefully understated thanks to a true sense of class. So he has singlehandedly built a successful business and although when asked he says the one luxury that he would really like, would be to spend more time with his partner, Kate Milne and their two beautiful children, he shows no sign of slowing down just yet. This summer brings a new venture for Ashley and a celebrity business partner, which you’ll be able to read about in an upcoming feature, but until then, Ashley is a true believer that everyone deserves at least one beautiful timepiece in their lifetime and so Timeless Watches is exclusively offering Newport Vision readers 10% off any of his stocked watches and as Timeless Watches are FSA approved he will also offer our readers 0% Finance.

SUPERYACHT FOR HIRE IN OZ As a leading Australian brokerage house and MYBA accredited, Ocean Alliance was selected as the Central Agent for ONEWORLD and will be undertaking the yacht’s world debut at the upcoming, Australian Superyacht Rendezvous (ASR). “ONEWORLD has generous deck space for experiencing the Australian environment; her foredeck is particularly appealing. Meanwhile, the interior is contemporary and stylish revealing both the Owner’s and charterers’ tastes.

Ocean Alliance has launched the 31.5 metre superyacht, M/Y ONEWORLD, onto the charter market. Having arrived in March 2018 to Australia directly from the shipyard, the Owner and Ocean Alliance have wasted no time in making her available for charters on Australia’s east coast. Part of the Majesty 100 range, this is the second Gulf Craft which has been built to Australian survey standards for the express purpose of charter, reflecting the increasing interest in and importance of the Australian charter market.

Furthermore, her crew have been hand selected from Europe to operate the yacht to those exacting standards. This is why we are sure ONEWORLD will be a very popular charter yacht in Australia,” explained Mr Joachim Howard, Managing Director of Ocean Alliance. After exhibiting at ASR on the Gold Coast from the 20 to 22nd April, ONEWORLD will return to her homeport of Sydney before heading north to the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef from August to November for the prime charter season. “It is great to be home. After spending 15 years captaining charter yachts between the

Mediterranean and Australia, I am excited to be permanently back in Australia and have the opportunity to take charter guests to some of my favourite places which, to date, have not had the recognition they deserve,” stated ONEWORLD’s captain, Matthew Baily. ONEWORLD accommodates up to 12 guests in five staterooms – three double and two twin each with an additional Pullman bed. ONEWORLD includes a wide array of toys and tenders for the charter guest including a Funair slide, five-person jacuzzi and dive and snorkelling equipment. The Owner has selected renowned private and corporate chef, Clancy Atkinson, as the charter chef. Clancy has had considerable experience creating corporate menus for the likes of Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent. His menus for ONEWORLD will combine this attention to detail with inspirations from Australian fresh produce to devise a culinary experience on par with the yacht itself. “The Australian charter market is going from strength to strength. As demand grows so does the calibre of the superyachts and the experience being offered,” continued Mr Howard. ONEWORLD is available for AUD $110,000 + APA + GST (10%) per week. For further details and availability, please contact: Ocean Alliance on info@oceanalliance.com.au call +61 (0) 405 767 869.

Nordic walking is a full-body exercise that's easy on the joints and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Find out about the Nordic walking technique, the health benefits and getting started.

WALKING ON THE WILD SIDE Nordic walking was originally a summer training regime for cross-country skiers.

Newport Vision met up with Ed Woolley, a British Nordic Walking Instructor from Nordic Walk Newport. Nordic walking was originally a summer training regime for cross-country skiers. It's based on using specially designed walking poles in a way that harnesses the power of the upper body to propel you forward as you walk. It is now a recognised way to turn a walk into a whole-body exercise that can be done by people of all ages and fitness levels. You'll be provided with Nordic walking poles (which are different to those used for trekking because of how the strap is used and the angle you plant them on the ground) and you’ll need trainers or walking shoes and appropriate clothing. When properly used, the poles take the weight off the knees and lower body joints – this makes you feel lighter on your feet. Similar to other forms of moderate activity, regular Nordic walking can lower your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and helps with stress. Nordic walking, like any other form of exercise, can also be used as part of an exercise programme to lose weight. Ed holds walks at: • Tredegar House • Fourteen Locks Canal Centre • Newport Wetlands Centre To Find out more call Ed on 07906365280

Our Deluxe Double Room was located on the upper floors of the hotel and featured large windows that offered panoramic views of the city plus a Nespresso coffee machine, dressing gown and slippers, and courtesy newspaper in room (on request). We took advantage of all of this during our stay and were sad to say goodbye to the robe and slippers as we vacated the room. Like any reputable luxury hotel we were treated to a warm British welcome with a glass of sparkling wine or juice to enjoy on arrival. A daily buffet breakfast was served in the elegant surroundings of Three O Two Restaurant, where we enjoyed a selection traditional English breakfast items like scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and baked beans, plus a variety of crumbly pastries and baked breads, cereals, seasonal fruits, cakes, cheeses and cold meats We were spoilt for choice from the hotel's Three O Two Restaurant and enjoy a three course dinner featuring a bi-weekly changing menu of Mediterranean cuisine with a Spanish twist with items such as venison carpaccio with shaved Manchego cheese, Iberian pork cheeks with Moscatel wine sauce and traditional Spanish Paella Valenciana with green beans, rabbit and chicken. Guests are welcome to use the hotel's excellent facilities including Circus Bar to enjoy a sandwich and cake,

Circus Lounge for tasty cocktails, and the hotel's Despacio Beauty Centre which offers exclusive personalised treatments plus a sauna, hydromassage shower and gym. Everything the luxury lifestyle traveller should expect. Luxury as standard.

THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE WILL GIVE WALES A REAL BOOST ON THE WORLD STAGE FOR BUSINESS EVENTS.

36 NEWPORT VISION MAY 2018

International Convention Centre Wales The new International Convention Centre Wales (ICC Wales) will open in the summer of 2019 and provide a real beacon attracting global business events to the country. A joint venture partnership between Celtic Manor Resort and Welsh Government with a total development cost of £83.7m, ICC Wales will be capable of accommodating up to 5,000 delegates with a total floor space exceeding 26,000 square metres. The new facility will open for business in June 2019. The centre will house a 1,500 seat auditorium and separate exhibition hall which, at 4,000 square metres, will provide the largest pillar-free ballroom in Europe, capable of hosting 2,400 people for a gala dinner. Celtic Manor Resort Chairman Sir Terry Matthews said: “This International Convention Centre has been many years in the planning and I am delighted that we are now in a position to deliver this facility that will be such an asset to Wales.

The Celtic Manor Resort has already established a reputation as the UK’s No 1 Conference Hotel but this new centre will be a real game-changer.” Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure Ken Skates added: “This will be a major asset for Wales, enabling us to compete with any venue in the UK and indeed Europe to attract and host key events that make a huge contribution to the economy. It will place Wales firmly at the forefront of business tourism destinations and I am delighted it is being delivered in partnership with the Welsh Government.” As well as the auditorium and main hall, included in the detailed designs are five divisible meeting rooms that will create a further 12 flexible spaces, breakouts at all levels to outdoor networking spaces, state-ofthe-art technology with fully integrated audio visual facilities and fully serviced client offices, green rooms and production facilities.

A 2,500 square metre plaza will welcome visitors to the new centre and provide additional networking and exhibition space. There will be HGV loading bays direct to both the auditorium and main hall, and 700 car parking spaces will be created under the facility with direct access to the ICC Wales arrival atrium. The existing Celtic Manor Convention Centre, with its 1,500-delegate Caernarfon Suite, will continue to operate fully during construction of the new facility and its meeting rooms and amenities will complement ICC Wales when it opens.
