Executor’s Commission –When is it Payable?

The role of an Executor in an estate can on occasions be a difficult and thankless task. The Court acknowledges that an Executor may be \ compensated for his or her efforts. For that reason Section 86, the Probate and Administration Act 1898 provides that an Executor can apply for Executor’s Commission.

An Application for Executor’s Commission is an application to the Court which usually awards between 2% and 4% of the estate to the Executor in return for his or her efforts. The complexity of the estate and size of the estate are taken into consideration. The Application is made shortly prior to the completion of the administration of the estate. It is paid as part of the distribution of the

generous people like you.”

Pat Burnett thanked everyone, including the staff at Estia Health Tea Gardens who supported the nomination which was warmly applauded at the morning ceremony.

estate. As an alternative, many will makers after receiving advice leave a sum of money to the Executor “in lieu of executor’s commission”. This avoids the need for the application for Executor’s Commission and the associated delay.

Of course, if an Executor is also a beneficiary in an estate, then the Executor chooses not to make an application as he or she is satisfied with what they are already receiving. If the Executor would like to claim commission then he or she should inform the solicitor acting for the estate of the Executor’s intention well prior to the administration of the estate.

represents over 130 residents, was advocating for a range of improvements for the area.

These include the need for more federal funding for rundown community infrastructure including the upgrade of ageing and run down community halls (Hawks Nest Community Centre Hall built 1973 and the Scout Hall built 1988), the limited telecommunications connectivity across the region, the need to boost investment into regional sporting infrastructure, and the environment.

The need for a future overpass at the Pacific Highway/Myall Way interchange, as well as more ‘Black Spot’ program funding for the same was also raised.

The conversation was broad, highlighting the need to better coordinate and focus Federal, State and MidCoast Council funding and resources, including a need for more advocacy.

The Member for Lyne listened and provided insight into how Federal Government funding flows into the NSW State and MidCoast Council local government, with discretion

strongest at the local level.

HNTGPA President Bruce Murray reflected, “Our current population is now just over 5,800.

“We have a forecast population growth of more than 20 percent over the next five years, especially with new large residential developments as well as increasing tourism.

“Government investment in local infrastructure, the access roads and the bridge, waterways, community facilities and the environment needs to keep pace with this growth so that local residents and businesses can prosper.

“We need to advocate now to prevent poor outcomes in the near future, some of which we are already seeing such as traffic congestion at peak times, poorly connected or no pathways and bike tracks, unattractive streetscapes, habitat loss, non compliant development, run down halls and ageing sporting infrastructure.

“Talking needs to translate into action at every level.”

The HNTGPA Management Committee also took the opportunity to show Dr Gillespie the rundown state of the Hawks

Nest Scout Hall which is being used by young people in the local Boxing Club.

HNTGPA volunteers have been working at least one day every week for the last three months to clean the hall for the upcoming Seniors Festival, funded by the NSW State Government.

The other hall at Hawks Nest Community Centre (Booner Street) will be closing soon for an MidCoast project costing $330,000 to remove and replace the old demountable as well as completing electrical and landscaping improvements.

For more information visit https://haveyoursay. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ hawks-nest-communitycentre-renovation.

The HNTGPA is keen to see the old Scout Hall continue to be maintained and used by organisations such as the Boxing Club and other community groups with an opportunity for a substantive upgrade.

The HNTGPA Management Committee also demonstrated the new audio-visual equipment funded from the Federal Volunteer Grant and thanked Dr Gillespie for the support to date.

Tea Gardens Pool –Federal Funding status

The Committee also

highlighted the need for the upgrade to the Tea Gardens Pool to be completed 100 percent whilst acknowledging the work to date was an improvement. The pool’s new all access ramp, toilet and re-surfacing were partially funded by the Federal Government who paid $700,000 to MidCoast Council to deliver the project.

However, the gutters, replacement turf, entrance foyer frame, old unsafe pool ladder, and new shed remain incomplete, with the roof and plant room also needing improvements.

The HNTGPA has also written to the MCC requesting a list of works to be completed, advocating for improved maintenance and hours of operation by the sub-contractor ‘The Y’, and offering to assist where required, including with more funding.

The Management Committee advised Dr Gillespie of the community’s future need for a brand-new aquatic and sporting facility on the same site with similar features to those completed at CenterPoint Sport and Leisure in Blayney, NSW which has a population of 3,500 (new

heated indoor pool, plant room, parking, recreational area.

For details of the project, visit https:// www.blayney.nsw.gov.au/ centrepoint-major-project.

The project had a total value of $4.2 million funded by the Federal Government Building Better Regions Fund and Blayney Shire Council cash reserves.

The HNTGPA advocates for local residents and ratepayers to all levels of government, as well as volunteering on projects.

Fun in the sun on Australia Day in Bulahdelah

AUSTRALIA Day is an opportunity to celebrate living in our country.

A time to reflect, respect and acknowledge the many cultures and traditions that make up our wide brown land.

After a few years of COVID restrictions it was full steam ahead under clear skies and balmy hot weather.

In Bulahdelah there were many activities to cater for many varied interests

and pastimes.

The day kicked off with a breakfast at the Bulahdelah Historical Museum.

Bulahdelah Historical Society President Kevin Carter told Myall Coast NOTA, “We have had dinners for about 20 years so we thought we would try something new.

“Doing it this way lets people do what they want for the rest of the day,” said Mr Carter.

The event was well supported by the local community, with about 50 people attending eating the yummy egg and

bacon/sausage rolls, together with the orange juice and fresh fruit.

It was a great start to the day and everybody had a good time.

The crowd was entertained by a patriotic speech from Bulahdelah Historical Society President Kev Carter about how lucky we are to live in such a great country and local community given the troubles we see in other lands.

The Aussie quiz and bush poetry by Diane Burns, Ray Towers and Irene Worth reminded us that there’s many great yarns to tell about this country.

This was topped off by some rollicking singalongs of Aussie songs with Thora-Lou Smith.

Thanks to all those who handled the ground preparation, cooking, flag raising and food catering on the day and to MidCoast Council for their support and donation that enabled this event.

This event was followed by a triples bowl day at the Bulahdelah Bowling Club where the crowd of hardy bowlers endured the heat in a fun contest before retreating into the clubhouse to enjoy their barbeque lunch.

A family day was held at Delhuntie Youth camp with drumming groups and whip cracking amongst other activities with the ‘Tower of Terror” proving to be the most popular with youngsters.

The day was topped off with a yummy lunch provided by Bulahdelah Lions Club.

The afternoon was a scorcher with people retreating to their homes after a morning of activities to enjoy this great country with their families.

Australia Day Lions Breakfast a roaring hit

THE LIONS Australia Day

BBQ was back in a big way with a perfect summer morning by the Myall River and lots of people enjoying bacon, eggs and sausage rolls, local Best Buzz Mobile Coffee, jam drops, and free entertainment by the Old Bones Garage Band and DJ Allan.

After a two-year break, President Peter Webb and the Lions were all very happy to see over 500 people all enjoying Pelican Park, clean and ready thanks to MidCoast Council.

“A big thank you to the public who are here today supporting today’s celebrations and all our other fundraising events which the club has held during the past year,” Peter said.

“The support we receive from the public and local businesses is fantastic.”

100 percent of the funds raised are donated to causes including the restoration of the Bennett’s Beach Petrel Frieze Wall, supporting

the Tea Gardens Primary School, Clinic Bus, as well as residents and services.

Tea Gardens Lions also directly supports national and international causes including Australian drought, flood and fire relief packages, as well as donating to diabetes research, vision care, paediatric cancer developments, hunger

relief, and environmental restoration programs.

Peter Webb commenced proceedings with an acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land, the Worimi, and paid respects to Elders past, present and future.

He also acknowledged the 27 Lions, especially the event organiser Linda Allen,

who all arrived in their bright yellow shirts at dawn to set up and run the BBQ, stage, and the children’s races.

The Lions cooked over 300 sausages, sold countless Jam Drops, and raffle tickets with three winners being drawn for a popular prize - Bunnings Gift Vouchers.

A highlight was the live performance of the local Old Bones Garage Band featuring nine great musicians led by Cherry Hughes with Wendy, Sally,

Anna, Ruth, Frances, Ross, Phil, and

The Band, which includes ukuleles, a harmonica, and a lagerphone, played a popular mix of well-known Aussie songs, some adapted to highlight the best of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

The President of the Tea Gardens RSL Sub-Branch, Mr Mal Motum, raised the Australian flag over the Myall River, followed by the awarding of the Lions Citizen of the Year to Mrs Pat Burnett for her long service to the community.

The children’s races were then on, with fun egg and spoon races, threelegged races (with some tripped up parents), hessian sack races, and a ‘final best of three’ tug-of-war.

The race turn-out was excellent and after a few practice rounds the competition was on with everyone winning (well at least sweets for trying!).

The Lions Club is always welcoming new members and if you can volunteer, please email teagardens. nsw@lions.org.au

Labor vows to back local TAFE campuses

AN elected Labor Government will get local TAFE campuses back on track and tackle the state’s skills crisis, according to Mark Vanstone, the Labor candidate for the Myall Lakes electorate.

According to a media statement from Vanstone and Tim Crakanthorp MP, Shadow Minister for Skills and TAFE, a third of the state’s TAFE’s teaching

staff have been sacked, fourteen campuses have been sold off or approved for sale, enrolments have plummeted by 160,000, and apprenticeship and traineeship completions have halved.

According to the statement, the Taree and Great Lakes campuses have not been immune, with Taree enrolments down by half and over a third of its

staff lost.

Great Lakes has been hit even harder, with enrolments down 59 per cent and staffing down 58 per cent.

Mark Vanstone, Labor Candidate for Myall Lakes said, “Both Taree and Great Lakes TAFEs used to be vibrant community hubs, but now they are shells of their former selves.

“When I speak to the

community about TAFE, I always hear back how important it is in making sure our kids get the skills and training they need to enter the workforce.”

NSW Labor has pledged to support NSW TAFE to deliver the long-term strategies needed to resolve the skills crisis, starting with a guarantee that a minimum of 70 per cent of total skills funding will go to TAFE

to ensure that is has the financial stability it needs to flourish and a review of the vocational education system.

Labor will also tackle the conditions of hard-working TAFE teachers starting with an open dialogue with the sector and the abolishment of the Liberal National Government’s wages cap.

and TAFE said, “NSW is in a skills crisis.

“In just twelve months the number of occupations of National Skills Priority List has almost doubled.

“These commitments are the first step in righting the wrongs of the last decade of mismanagement.

Tim Crakanthorp MP, Shadow

for Skills

“Only a Minns Labor Government will restore TAFE to what it used to be and re-skill NSW.”

Top baby names revealed for 2022

CHARLOTTE looks set to be the most popular girls’ name in NSW in 2022 while Oliver is the number one boys’ name for the eighth year running.

Attorney General Mark Speakman and Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor

Dominello revealed the current top 10 NSW baby names for 2022, as recorded by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

“Welcoming a baby into the family is a joyous time for parents and selecting a name is one of the most

important decisions they’ll make.

“It’s always interesting to see which names are the most popular each year,” Mr Speakman said.

“After finishing third in 2021, Charlotte is well placed to finish top of the charts joining Oliver who

has been the number one baby boys’ name in NSW since 2014,” Mr Speakman said.

“Amelia, Isla and Mia have also made the top ten for several years running, along with Jack, Noah, and William.

“We welcome the

state’s newest residents and congratulate all NSW families who brought a little bundle of joy into their home in 2022.”

The top ten names for girls in 2022 are Charlotte, Amelia, Olivia, Isla, Mia, Ava, Ella, Matilda Sienna and Chloe.

The top ten names for boys in 2022 are Oliver, Noah, Leo, William, Theodore, Jack, Henry, Luca, Thomas and Charlie.

In 2022, 83,411 babies were registered in NSW, 6,648 fewer than in 2021.

However, as parents have 60 days to register their newborn, babies who were born in December 2022 may yet to be registered.

Exciting future for the arts in the MidCoast

ARTS and culture across the MidCoast will get a boost over the next few years as a direct result of new initiatives announced by MidCoast Council last week.

“A thriving arts community is essential for our local area – arts and culture enhance all of our lives.

“That’s why I am proud to announce that MidCoast Council is changing its delivery model to support local artists and the cultural

community,” said MidCoast Mayor, Claire Pontin. These initiatives include:

1. Establishing an Arts and Cultural Advisory Group to more effectively engage with local arts and culture groups and individuals.

2. Establishing a new local Arts Grant to assist local arts groups and individuals stage public events.

3. Creating a page on the MidCoast Council Website for arts support which has several links and

directs artists to funding options.

4. Utilising existing events diaries to actively promote local arts and culture events.

5. Promoting the listings on the Arts and Creatives section of the “MidCoast My Community Directory” Arts and Creatives - MidCoast Community Directory (www. mycommunitydirectory.com. au).

This is in addition

to the support Council currently provides to artists through its arts and cultural programs at the Manning Regional Art Gallery and Manning Entertainment Centre and through its events sponsorship program (www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ Community/Communitysupport-and-statistics/ Grants-and-funding).

As a result of this increased commitment, Council has decided to withdraw its membership of

Arts Mid North Coast so as to be better able to support the arts locally.

Council is also continuing to engage with arts and cultural organisations, including Regional Arts NSW and Create NSW, for the purpose of supporting artists and cultural events in the region.

“We’re really excited about the new direction we’re taking to support the arts in the MidCoast,” said MidCoast Council Mayor

Teachers Federation slams Perrottet’s plans for teacher recruitment

IN A NEW policy announced by Premier Dominic Perrottet, teachers in NSW will soon be able to enter the classroom after completing a one-year postgraduate course.

Mr Perrottet said this new policy will continue the NSW Government’s push to modernise education and make a teaching career a reality sooner for people already working.

“People at all stages of their lives have the potential to be great teachers, for those who already have an undergraduate degree we want a more streamlined approach for them to start a teaching career,” Mr

Perrottet said.

“Teaching is a profession to aspire to and I don’t want a single person who is considering starting this fantastic career to be deterred by an unnecessary additional year in their training.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the current two-year Masters degree requirement has been shown to act as a disincentive for aspiring teachers, particularly mid-career professionals, and didn’t have a clear enough impact on student outcomes.

“A major barrier for people who already have an

undergraduate degree and want to become a teacher is the length of time required to retrain,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Providing a new oneyear Masters pathway will enable more mid-career professionals with existing qualifications and experience to bring these to bear in our classrooms.

“This decision is backed by strong research which shows that the best way for teachers to hit the ground running is to spend more time in schools.”

Under a NSW Liberal and Nationals Government, those with an undergraduate degree would be able to complete a one-year full time postgraduate degree in order to become a secondary school teacher from 2024, with streamlined

postgraduate pathways for primary school teachers to be available by 2026.

NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos said the announcement of a cut from two years to one year for postgraduate degrees was the latest in a succession of damaging and inconsistent policies that ignore the real causes of teacher shortages.

“The way to stop teacher shortages and creating a sustainable supply of teachers is to address the fundamental problems which are turning people off teaching – unsustainable workloads, uncompetitive salaries and insecure work,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

“There were 3,300 vacant permanent positions in schools in November and this

is a crisis the government is incapable of fixing.

“The Federal Government’s Quality Initial Teacher Education Review found that substantially increasing the pay of beginning and senior teachers was the number one way to get more midcareer people into teaching and was far more attractive than a condensed one year qualification.

“After a decade of saying the most important factor in education is the quality of teaching, this government now thinks lowering standards and cutting qualifications is the way to stop teacher shortages.

“Teaching has never been a more challenging profession.

“People entering the

Claire Pontin.

“We know that by strengthening our region’s creatives, we’re also helping to invigorate the local economy as well as improve the lifestyle of our residents and the experience of our visitors.”

In line with its Cultural Plan, Council is planning other initiatives to support the arts in the MidCoast, with further announcements planned for 2023.

profession need high levels of skills and training to meet the complex needs of their students and that is why all governments agreed to shift to a two year postgraduate qualification.

“Instead of recognising the difficulty and complexity of teaching, Mr Perrottet announced unqualified teachers will be brought in via Teach for Australia and now he wants to cut the qualifications for new postgraduate students.

“This is at the same time the government is spending millions on a mid-career entry program that requires participants to complete a two year masters before they enter the classroom.

“International research shows that underqualified teachers have far higher attrition rates than those that enter through traditional pathways.

“We know that more than half of TFA graduates are gone within three years of completing the program.”

Tech savvy seniors workshops

SENIORS looking to brush up on their online skills and learn new ways to stay connected are invited to free workshops in February.

Back by popular demand, MidCoast Libraries will host the Tech Savvy Seniors workshops to help seniors become more familiar with their computers and devices.

The workshops are suitable for introductory-level users.

The goal is for attendees to leave with the confidence to navigate their own device.

These skills can help people to stay independent, keep in touch with friends and family and access online services.

You could learn how to make and receive calls, add or find contacts or apps, send texts, emails, messages or photos, access the internet or discover tips and tricks to make using

your device easier.

Some sessions focus on how to stay safe online.

Workshops begin on Wednesday 1 February at Gloucester Library, and will also be held at libraries in Hallidays Point, Harrington, Stroud, Nabiac, Taree, and Forster, concluding at Tea Gardens on Friday 17 February.

The workshops are free, but bookings are essential due to

limited places.

Please bring your own device and any questions you have for expert presenter, Jill Carter.

Book your place online https://library.midcoast.nsw. gov.au/events or by attending any library branch or phoning 6592 5290.

The workshops are possible thanks to a partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.

$250 for Seniors Travel

WITH the cost of living rising fast, seniors living in regional areas can enjoy a

$250 boost from the NSW Government.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said applications

for the latest round of the program are now open and encouraged eligible seniors to cash in on the initiative.

“We know how much

seniors value this card – it can mean the difference between an extra few trips to visit grandkids, the ease of seeing friends locally or

just getting to the shops or attending medical appointments,” Mr Toole said.

The $250 pre-paid Visa card can be used on fuel, taxis, electric charging stations and pre-booked NSW TrainLink regional

trains and coaches.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said, “I really encourage all eligible seniors to get their applications in and save themselves $250 on travel costs for this year.”

NSW Labor announce $400 million ‘Education Future Fund’ and tutoring program

NSW LABOR has committed to the creation of a $400 million ‘Education Future Fund’, and a permanent Literacy and Numeracy tutoring program, if elected after the March state election.

Labor said the fund

would ‘end the historic underfunding of public schools’, deliver improved student outcomes and end chronic teacher shortages.

The Education Future Fund will be used to make investments in more teachers, school counsellors

and to establish a permanent literacy and numeracy tutoring program that will use highly trained teachers to provide intensive support to the children who need help the most.

As part of the plan, a targeted Literacy and

Numeracy tutoring program will be launched on 1 July 2023.

The program will operate in both primary and high schools, with a particular focus on this year’s Year 10 grade.

Minns said, “My father was a primary school teacher for 45 years.

“He is really passionate about the vocation and about teaching the next generation of kids.

at school, due to cancelled classes and falling outcomes.

“Under Labor, schools will be fully funded, we’ll have more teachers in classrooms, kids off their devices and focusing on their learning.

“I’m determined to end the war on teachers and attract and keep them.

NSW Government promise tough action on Domestic Violence

IN what is shaping up to be an election of promises and counter promises the incumbent government is pledging to take a tough stance on domestic violence.

It will commence by reviewing all sentences for domestic violence related

offences and by making sweeping changes to the handling of cases within the judicial system.

Under this proposal, the Government will commission a full-scale review of all domestic violence related sentences.

It will also undertake a feasibility study to establish

a dedicated Domestic and Family Violence Court, fund a specialist Domestic and Family Violence List across three local courts and fund a surge of an additional five magistrates to ensure cases are heard earlier.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the Government was taking a zero-tolerance

NSW Labor Leader Chris stance to domestic violence by holding perpetrators to the highest account.

“We are cracking down on this abhorrent behaviour and sending a clear message to perpetrators that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our state,” Mr Perrottet said.

Back to School vouchers to relieve financial strain

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has released welcome financial relief for parents with children returning to school in the form of vouchers.

The Premier's Back to School NSW Vouchers program provides three $50 vouchers, totaling $150 for each eligible student.

The vouchers can be used towards the cost of school uniforms, shoes, bags, technology, textbooks and other eligible expenses at registered businesses.

The NSW Government is also helping kids get active with the Active Kids program.

The Active Kids program provides a $100 voucher for parents, guardians and

carers of school enrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year.

The current voucher, released on 1 January 2023, is valid until Friday 30 June 2023.

To use the voucher, find a registered activity provider and present your voucher when you sign.

If you’re a parent, carer

“Everywhere I go I hear of children falling behind Speakman said the NSW Government would fund a temporary surge of five additional Local Court magistrates to help clear the case backlog.

Minister for Women’s Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Natalie Ward said these reforms complement existing measures, including new and upgraded safe rooms and remote witness rooms

“Our future depends on it.”

in metropolitan and regional courts delivered by the NSW Government.

“Victim-survivors of domestic violence should not fall away from the journey of seeking justice because the process is too hard, drawnout and complex,” Mrs Ward said.

“We know COVID-19 created a significant backlog in domestic violence cases being heard by the Local Court, with some victims waiting nine months or longer to have their case heard.”

or guardian, the student will be eligible if they are a NSW resident aged between 4.5 and 18 years, are enrolled in school (from Kindergarten to Year 12, including those who are home-schooled or enrolled in secondary school education at TAFE NSW) and are a current Medicare card holder.

You can apply for a voucher for each eligible student.

You can use the

voucher for registration, participation or membership costs with an approved Active Kids provider.

The NSW Government is also helping kids get creative with the new Creative Kids program.

From 1 January 2023, parents, guardians and carers can apply for a $100 voucher for each schoolenrolled child aged 4.5 to 18 years.

The voucher may be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and tuition costs for a

range of creative activities, including arts, drama, dance, digital design, coding and music lessons.

Parents, guardians and carers of children aged three to six years who are not enrolled in school, can apply for a $100 voucher towards the cost of swimming lessons.

The voucher can be used for a structured swimming lesson program with an approved First Lap provider.

The voucher is valid until 30 June 2023.

Free menstrual hygiene products for NSW students

STUDENTS at public schools across NSW will return to school in 2023 with access to free menstrual hygiene products.

More than 4600 dispensers have been

installed in public schools across the state to support young women overcome barriers in accessing menstrual hygiene products.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah

Mitchell celebrated the rollout of this program by the Liberal and Nationals in Government for the start of the 2023 school year.

“Getting your period should not be a barrier to

Attorney General Mark education.

“We have installed 4600 sanitary product dispensers in NSW schools to ensure students can participate in all aspects of school life,” Ms Mitchell said.

“I want our young women to feel comfortable in knowing they have access to free sanitary products when they need, in their school.

“Evidence shows that providing sanitary items has

a very positive impact on educational engagement and attainment, so we know this program is going to make a huge difference for our students’ education.”

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News

25 JANUARY

Fine and sunny weather today encouraged 48 players to participate in two games of Fours with a random draw for partners.

The morning game was won by the team with the “highest winning score” and so Neil Kibble, Phil Thrift, Rick Islaub and Roman Bondaruk managed that

with a score of 24. The afternoon game was decided by the “lowest winning margin” and with a margin of 1 Barry Goode, Dave Ransome, Col Amos and John Parkinson were the winners.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Col Buddle.

Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their continued support.

28 January

Some Pennant selection matches were held today with several new players participating.

The Club has gone from very few early nominations to too many to have all the applicants placed into sides.

We have sides in Grade 5, Grade 6 and Grade 7.

29 January

There were plenty of players who braved the hot

In other news.

and sunny weather to play in Sunday Bowls today.

There were also several last minute cancellations which meant a number of teams had to contend with a ‘swinger’ in their ranks.

Apart from its broader meaning, none too flattering, in bowling parlance it means one player plays for both teams.

In such cases 4 ‘nothing’ bowls are played as the

Hawks

‘swinger’ finds it difficult to support one side over the other.

Surely there must be better ways to retain the integrity of teams without resorting to the use of swingers.

The team with the highest winning score won the day and so Noel Jackson, Geoff Page and Jane Uff, managed that feat with a score of 16.

Dolphins for Dolphins Day is on 11 February and organiser, Rick Islaub will give an update next Wednesday at bowls. The Pennants Bash luncheon will be on Saturday 18 February.

An expression of interest sheet will be up shortly.

There will also be a fun game before lunch with Division 3 vs Division 4 depending on players turning up to participate.

20 LADIES from the Hawks Nest Ladies Paramount Putting Club celebrated their 18th annual presentation day for 2022 at Mumms on the Myall last Friday.

Thankyou for the lovely food enjoyed on the day.

Although it was a very hot day, there was a nice breeze coming off the water.

What a wonderful area

we live in, dolphins swam past just before most ladies arrived just to set the scene.

After the main meal prizes were given to 6 ladies and congratulations go to Donna O'Brien being our champion putter for 2022.

The ladies then presented myself with a lovely gift which I told them was much appreciated but unnecessary as I enjoy taking their monies all year, it is amazing how it

mounts up and most ladies had more than enough to pay for their luncheon, except Donna of course, one of the setbacks of being a good putter!

We had seven golfing days cancelled last year and are hoping there are not so many days off this year.

Good golfing, good health and hopefully not so many three putts ladies.

Dear Jasminda,

I was recently told I look good for my age.

On reflection, I don't think this is a compliment, but an insult.

How should I have responded?

Dear Helen,

Ah, the old backhanded compliment. A bit like the backhand return in table tennis, it can put you off guard and it is only later, on reflection, that you have the time to think of the perfect way to deal with it.

Restrictions for Jimmys Beach

DEAR News Of The Area,

I HAVE been made aware of a newly erected sign at Jimmys Beach, indicating more restrictions to those on restricted licences, but allowing commercial fishers access, and an area designated Cultural Significance.

I would like to know when this decision was made and what consultation took place with the Hawks Nest community.

I also have a connection with this area as I have frequented this area for almost 70 years, and I believe, far longer than some or possibly all of the commercial fishers.

As regards the cultural area, I truly don't know who has advised the Council here, but that area has come and gone with huge seas over the seven decades that I am aware of.

If it is to do with damage to dunes by 4WD, then this fades into insignificance when Great Lakes Council removed millions and millions of cubic metres of sand from Deadmans, an enormous sandhill which took millions of years to form, and that the previous Great Lakes Council took fifteen

years to demolish.

All that sand today causes havoc by silting up the river and bay and also is responsible for covering weed beds and dive sites in the bay.

I purchased my restricted beach licence on 7 December 2022 and was not made aware of any changes.

Furthermore, on checking MidCoast website on 1 January 2023, there were no changes to Jimmys Beach access.

I cannot walk to Yacaaba Headland and I will now be unable to sustain my quality of life, fishing up towards Yacaaba. However, commercial fishers are allowed to continue their operations, pillaging the bay of fish, destroying weed beds and choking infantile fish.

It's unfortunate for those who are unable to access this area due to some incapacitation and one hopes that MidCoast Council does the right thing and reassesses this ill thought decision, so that my tradition and quality of life is restored.

Regards, John ALTERATOR, Hawks Nest.

The NOTA wants you!

TELLING the incredible stories of the Myall Coast is what News Of The Area (NOTA) is all about.

The independently-owned NOTA has had a presence in the region for decades and is proud to keep locals up to date with the happenings of the area.

Now, NOTA is seeking more enthusiastic locals with a background in writing to join the team in Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Karuah or surrounds, with a Council reporter sought in particular.

“If you have a background in writing, and a passion for your local community, I would love to hear from you,” said NOTA Group Editor Douglas Connor.

“As the paper continues to grow, we are always looking for enthusiastic wordsmiths to help cover the region’s news, sport, events, music etc.”

Writing for NOTA can be an amazing way to connect with your local community,

to meet some of the awe-inspiring locals creating change in the area, and to learn and experience the unique elements of life in our region.

Writing for NOTA is flexible, with contributor reporters able to submit as many or as few stories per week to fit in with their present lifestyle and commitments.

Veteran NOTA reporter Marian Sampson, who has reported on local issues on the Myall Coast and Port Stephens for five years, said the role allowed her freedom, and new opportunities.

“Writing for News Of The Area has been a wonderful opportunity for me.

“I have become further connected to my community and importantly those who care passionately about their causes.

It is hard to know whether people who give backhanded compliments are being genuine and are actually unaware of their faux pas, or if they are just plain cruel.

A bit like real estate ads, there's usually always a hidden meaning.

So, if someone says 'You look great for your age' at the very least it's ageism, but it also seems to say, 'I can't believe someone as old as you looks so good' and that's not a great thing to hear.

If you hear: 'Wow, you're so confident. I'd never be game to wear that,' they probably mean, 'Do you really think you can get away with that outfit?'.

How about: 'I almost didn't recognise you'. Which suggests; 'You normally look terrible.'

Or: 'You look like I feel,' which translates to 'I feel really dodgy.'

Or: 'Every time you wear that dress it looks amazing.' Which probably means: 'You're wearing that again!'

Maybe you could just reply with the oft-used but still punchy 'Wisdom has been chasing you, but I see you are faster' and you will probably never receive another compliment from this person, backhanded or otherwise.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

WEDNESDAY HARD QUIZ

ABC, 8pm

Curl up on the couch for a master class in witty jibes and sarcasm with Tom Gleeson. After nabbing the coveted Gold Logie for his deadpan humour in this comedic quiz show, and now hosting the local version of the British game show Taskmaster, Gleeson (right)is riding a career high –and this is where it all started.

THURSDAY LAW & ORDER: SVU

TEN, 8.30pm

MONDAY HERITAGE RESCUE

SBS, 8.30pm

If the idea of renovating makes you shudder you need a bit of Nick Knowles’ enthusiasm in your life. The British actor and presenter has overseen everything, from small home makeovers (DIY SOS) to the colossal refurbishments, on this comprehensive and craftloving series. He describes himself as a “bit of a history nerd” which might give rose-coloured glasses when overseeing the painstaking process of refurbishing a heritage site. In tonight’s final, he follows the £40 million (that’s around $A70 million) restoration of Stowe House in Buckinghamshire.

1.25 Rage. (MA15+adhlnsv)

In tonight’s season eight premiere, Gleeson enters the fray with a process engineer who adores The Lion King nanny who knows smallpox; a software engineer who plays Legend of Zelda and a dill-pickle maker who likes antique purses. Tune in to find out who will thwart Gleeson’s own specialist subject to score the Big Brass Mug.

After 24 seasons, we all know dedicated detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is every sex offender’s worst nightmare.

“You know, men like you become so good at lying they even begin to believe the ones they tell themselves,” snarls Benson in tonight’s disturbing instalment titled “Breakwater”. It’s glaringly obvious who the bad guy is, but the problem lies with whether the SVU team can pin this conniving predator for his crimes. The story has some distressing developments, making for hard-to-watch TV, but Carisi’s (Peter Scanavino) surprising and gratifying turn against the predator makes for a welcome thrill.

Australia Day Bowls

outcome was Shane Reed 25 to Ralph Turnbull 17.

ON AUSTRALIA Day the Bulahdelah Bowling Club had a nominated triples event followed by an afternoon BBQ which the players enjoyed in the coolness of the clubhouse.

Club President Ken Southern told Myall Coast NOTA, “All players say they had an enjoyable day even though it was hot and humid.”

The winners were Beryl Chapman, Glen Grainger and skip Graham Chapman with the runners up for the event being Tania Locke, Faye Southern and Skip Steve Locke.

On the following Sunday the semi finals of the men’s singles were played between Shane Reed and Ralph Turnbull. In a tight contest of 27 ends in a trying heat, the eventual

Mr Turnbull commented that even though he came “second” it was still “a lot of fun”.

After many teams visiting the Bulahdelah club from afar, it has been decided to form a travelling bowlers team which has met with great response from local bowlers who wish to reciprocate the many clubs that have visited.

Every first Sunday of the month there will be a fundraiser and a sausage sizzle to help them promote the club to the broader community.

There are many other bowling activities throughout the week with Tuesday bowls, Wednesday barefoot bowls and Saturday Jackpot bowls.

Or you are welcome for a roll up at any time.

Contact the club on 49974325 for further information on how you can join in these competitions.
