ICMA for Corporate Design. The ICMA has four categories. This booklet is about the category for clogos and corporate design. Information on the other categories of the ICMA can be found here: www.creative-media-award.com

The objective of the comeptition: Exchange of creative ideas. There are competitions in a lot of countries on corporate media, books, corporate design and magazine design, which take place in separated competitions. The ICMA aims to support the exchange of ideas at the international platform. This is why the call for entries is send to more than 9000 designers, custom media specialists, book publishers and magazines worldwide. Further objectives of the competition: n Disclosing trends: The results of the competition give everyone the opportunity to classify his or her object in international comparison, and to quickly execute optimisation measures for his or her own product. n Impact outwardly: Winners report intensively on the Awards they have won, on their websites and in print media. They thus underscore their standards of quality and at the same time get involved in their own advertising. n Think tank: Publication of the winners in the ICMA‘s Almanac and on www.creative-mediaaward.com promote their own creativity. What Awards are there? There are Awards in Gold, Silver and Bronze. There are, moreover, Awards of Excellence, presented for outstanding individual performance, for example, for the cover and cover story, photo reportage, illustrations, infographics or the concept of a publication as a whole. Statistics. 411 publications from 17 countries participated in the 6th ICMA. The following awards were given: n 39 Gold Awards (5th ICMA: 27) n 45 Silver Awards (5th ICMA: 25) n 31 Bronze Awards (5th ICMA: 22) n as well as Awards of Excellence

Why should I take part in this competition? In the magazine “Page” there was the following quote from a designer about this: “We have been in agreement for some years that there is no cheaper advertising than expensive participation in design competitions. How much more would we have to spend without this simple method in order to attract attention! And what’s nicer than the accolade of colleagues?” Take a look at the websites of well-known designers or large advertising agencies: Almost always you will find a category for competitions, in which they have successfully competed. The ICMA really is a world-wide competition. Winners can advertise with it and show they also work successfully against international competitors.

Even minor design offices have good chances. When you thumb through this brochure, you will readily see that even minor design offices have very good chances. Fees for participation are reasonable, and there aren‘t any hidden costs. If you have won an Award, you will not be getting any further invoices, such as, for example, for printing cost contributions for an almanac. Why do you have to pay a fee to participate? The competition is completely independent; it is not paid for by any company. Some costs are incurred to enable the competition to get off the ground. This is why a participation fee is levied: n The invitation announcement must be translated and printed. n There are postal charges for mailing the announcements. n There are the rental charges for the conference rooms for the Jury meetings. n The Jury works on a voluntary basis, however, the board and lodging as well as the travel expenses of the members of the Jury should at least be paid for. n Expenses are incurred for the website, for publications about the events, and for disseminating press information. n The document awards for the prize winners must be produced and dispatched by e-mail. This involves a great deal of work which, of course, has to be paid for. Compared to other contests, the participation fee at the ICMA is very low.

From which countries the submissions come from? Traditionally, the ICMA is very well positioned In December, all participants are in the German-speaking world. YATAI, Marketsquare, DK, Silver Award YATAI are Japanese restaurants in Denmark, where authentic Japanese food is offered. The logo and many packagings are reminiscent of Origami, the Japanese paper-folding technique.

Malerbetrieb Frank Görlitz, Süllwald Grafikwerk, D, Gold Award This work has already been awarded in an earlier ICM Award. It shows very nicely that even small companies – here a painting company – can have sophisticated corporate design. The idea of using colored strips is varied very well.

Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein, Hennies Kommunikation, D, Award of Excellence The Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein has a very elegant appearance. This is achieved with the restrained color scheme. The hunt is visualized by the silhouette of a deer.

The corporate design has many elements: logo, t-shirts, shop design, packagings, advertising materials, web design and more. The agency Marketsquare is a company of Berlingske, a newspaper publisher in Copenhagen.

“Josi” is the name of a new restaurant. Part and parcel of Corporate Design – besides the logo, typography and colours – is also the person Josi, who is shown in flyers, brochures and on posters. The advertising slogans are ambiguous: “Josi‘ll do it for you as of middle August”, “You‘re itching for it as well!” or “With the lot – and hot”.

An award in Bronze went to HairGroup AG, for the brand “SuperCut”. The design comes from Ricarda Süllwald, Teamwerk2, Bielefeld. The work is very practical and can be constantly implemented in extended fields of application.

Newspaper Design and Reading Research This book aims at showing the extended potentials the printed newspaper has today to stand their ground with readers, and set themselves apart from other media. This book is based on research into reader behaviour. To this end, an eye-tracking camera is employed that documents behaviour when a newspaper is read. The results enable us to deduce what the reader-friendly newspaper should look like. The redesigning projects shown in this book are orientated on the research results documented at the end of this book.
