Trends 2017 EuropEan nEwspapEr award t H e 1 8 tH c o m p e t i t i o n

newspapers keep changing As soon as the results of the European Newspaper Award have been released the question arises: Which new trends are there? Continuity is certainly one of the dominant markers, since dramatic changes are not likely to be appreciated by the readers. Changes are rather carried out with measured steps than in erratic jumps. The first part of this brochure presents the chief award winners of the 18th competition. The examples from Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany show how the medium newspaper has evolved over the decades. It is no longer the news from the day before, which has already been on the Internet, but newspapers create their own foci. Readers of the printed media are sure to receive exclusive topics in an exclusive design. Thinking of how to improve one’s newspaper this year, the ten items in the second part of this brochure might be helpful. On the whole, visual presentation of contents is what still counts. Small pictures and lengthy text blocks are in decline. When thumbing through the following pages, you will notice that a great number of examples come from Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Those countries have indeed caught up on the visual presentation of topics over the past years. Still, leaders in this field are newspapers from Scandinavia and the Benelux countries as well as newspapers from the Iberian peninsula. I, hereby, want to express my thanks to the jury for their voluntary commitment and, of course, ‘Congratulation to all the winners’!

Hufvudstadsbladet EuropEan nEwspapEr oF THE YEar c at e G o r Y l o c a l n e w s pa p e r

portrait photography The upper half of the front page is devoted to the cover story - an interview with the historian Ånne Applebaum, which is continued on four inside pages.

square The square on the front cover strikes the eye. It indicates the section ‘Interview’ and is used as a recurrent element in the layout.

portraits The interviewed person is shown from different angles and perspectives – as profile, close-up and, finally, as long shot with a lot of background allowing a glimpse at the relaxed atmosphere during the interview.

page-layout The use of white space under the lead-in on inside pages is similarly noticeable. The variable column with the quotes on the last double page is a typical element of this newspaper’s layout.

 Jury statement

 about the newspaper

Hufvudstadsbladet varies between relatively brief stories on news pages and rather long background pieces which might extend from four to six pages. Service boxes, quotes or breakers are constant elements in most articles. In contrast to many local papers in Scandinavia, Hufvudstadsbladet also deals with national and international topics.

The newspaper is distributed in the Helsingfors region in the half Nordic format with a circulation of ca 35,000 copies. They employ 40 journalists, 5 photographers and 10 layouters. The newspaper belongs to a publishing house which edits five regional newspapers.

6

photo of the week Typical of the Sunday paper is ‘The photo of the week’, usually covering a double page. It gives the readers an impression from another world, far away from their own lives.

visual storytelling “Hot, hotter, Helsingfors”, reads the headline of a big sauna test. The report starts on a double page, dominated by a photo of a typical sauna. Each of the tested saunas is supplemented by smaller photos, infographics including an assessment and three text blocks, detailing the specialties of the appropriate sauna.

special olympic Games “Faster, higher, further”, is the headline on the opening page of this special. For each of the Olympic Summer Games since 1896 a textblock is provided with statistics informing about the number of participating nations and athletes, the most successful nation and the score for Finland.

The small pie charts indicate the number of participants, the number of winners and the quota of men. In this supplement bold primary and secondary colours have been used, with warm and cold colours as contrasts. It seems that soft pastel shades are out.

front page 1 “Zero interest rates – what does that mean?” In order to be able to explain this situation to the readers the lead article is divided into five sections, each introduced by a question. For means of visualisation a big zero has been placed in the centre of the page.

front page 2 Since WWII there have never been more refugees than today. The pie chart shows the total number in its centre: 65.3 million people. The big black part of the circle indicates those 40.8 million people who took refuge somewhere within their home countries, the read fragments of the circle point out those 21.3 millions who fled into foreign countries.

front page 3 The portrait on this page has been generated on a computer and is based on the total œuvre by Rembrandt. The question raised is: Where are the limits in the production of new paintings? summary It becomes clear that Het Parool makes their unmistakable use and choice with the presentation of news.

 Jury statement

 about the newspaper

Het Parool features a magazine layout with a lot of contrasts, white space, but also bold headline typography. The way they use photos, illustrations and infographics appeals to their target group in the metropolis of Amsterdam. The layout is Het Parool’s trademark. Each copy is surprisingly new – nothing like routine.

The newspaper is published in a tabloid format with a circulation of ca. 60,000 copies. Het Parool is the most widely read newspaper in Amsterdam and its outskirts. They have 70 journalist, including 35 reporters, and seven layouters. The newspaper’s position is singular: They run news and reports on a local, regional, nation-wide and international basis.

8

a homemade story “What was eaten in the city back then”, is the headline. The editor Hiske Versprille cooked four historical dishes after recipes from the late Middle Ages, the Golden Age, the “Fin de Siècle” and the 70s, had them photographed in the style according to their time and added short statements. This homemade story makes the front page of this copy.

tracking the big sailing boats The ‘Sail‘ is a big event, also for sailing fans in Amsterdam. But where are the big boats after the ‘Sail‘? From the data of www.marinetraffic.com the newspaper tracked the routes of the 14 most striking boats for half a year and documented the results on this double page.

weekend supplement Marije Vogelzang is an ‘eetontwerper‘, which means ‘food designer‘. For her exam she created “A white burial”, a meal which consisted of white food only. With her “Dutch Institute of Food & Design” she wants to make her profession known to the public.

cover and coverstory 1 On the occasion of David Bowie’s demise they devoted their lead article to this outstanding artist. The culture section uses a similar photo, but with Bowie’s eyes closed this time.

front page The above page is typical of the newspaper’s visual journalism. The photo illustrating headgear fashion is not at all treated seriously. The colours red and black follow the colours of the masthead with its serif font.

cover and coverstory 2 Barrel hitting is a Danish carnival custom. In former times a cat was actually inside the barrel, but today it contains only sweets. Engineers of the DTU – Technical University of Denmark – have done research and tests on the most effective method of breaking the barrel open. Their method can be studied on an inside page.

 Jury statement

 about the newspaper

Politiken is the most widely read Newspaper in Denmark and known for their visual journalism. This newspaper has been internationally awarded several times now for their design. At the European Newspaper Award in 2010 they were the chief winner. The newspaper has a bold visual appearance: photo reportages, infographics, and visual storytelling are their strong features.

Their circulation adds up to 113,000 copies per day, and another 368,000 on Sundays. It is published in a Nordic format with supplements in tabloid format. Politiken employs 200 journalists, 12 photographers and 10 layouters.

10

europe-wide project From 28 European countries, Politiken acquired 28 caricatures on the topic Europe and published them in a supplement.

regular inside page The Nordic format is especially suited for extreme upright-format photos like the cut-out photo of this evening dress. The white space even adds to the dress’s elegant appearance.

visualisation Two faces in an extreme close-up: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This page deals with a TV debate of these two candidates for presidency and imparts an analysis of its result. The headline reads, “Whoops, Trump is back on his course of catastrophe”.

sectional front pages Several sections in tabloid format are added to the paper. This is why the cover is often used for a large photo or an illustration.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung EuropEan nEwspapEr oF THE YEar c at e G o r Y w e e K lY n e w s pa p e r

front page Their front pages show variations on visuals: a cut-out photo, a landscape-format photo or an illustration on the upper half of the page. The sizes of the headlines and the amount of text mark the FAS as a respectable weekly. Masthead: The last revision saw to a shortened version of the traditional Gothic-type name “Frankfurter Allgemeine” and an enlargement of the name “Sonntagszeitung”, which gives the head a more modern appeal. Typography: For headlines and bodytext the Janson is used. This font has a relaxed effect and perfectly suits the range of topics dealt with in this newspaper.

 Jury statement

 about the newspaper

The FAS has a perfectly clear layout. Reader guidance is easy and effective. The topics are brought to the readers’ attention via a combination of headline and picture. Often, illustrations are used to present topics in a visual way. The mixture of topics is targeted to the Sunday edition: The focus lies on political background information, service and lifestyle topics as well as sports.

The newspaper is published in Nordic format with a circulation of 245,128 copies (IVW 3/2016). According to AWA, this newspapers reaches 1.13 million readers. FAZ and FAS share 338 editors.

12

cover and coverstory FAS is another newspaper following the idea of combining cover and coverstory. The cut-out photo with the hops on the front page is taken up on inside pages. The coverstory need not appear in the first section, but can - as in this example - be dealt with in an appropriate section at the back of the newspaper.

Brexit These pages appeared a couple of days before the vote. The pictures are rather caricatures than serious illustrations, since they comment on this topic.

illustrations Illustrations belong to a standard repertory of FAS, but show variations of style with dierent illustrators: Kat Menschik, for example, works for the entertainment section of FAS, the names of the illustrators Mart Klein, Miriam Migliazzi,

Tom Janssen and Niels BoBojesen appear on the pages shown above. Sometimes illustrations are bought from picture agencies like Gett y. On the whole: illustrations are the newspaper’s characteristic element.

Bergens tidende, n The headline’s gist is “No experience. Only egoism, lies and populism. Donald Trump is the least qualified candidate for presidency”. The illustration is a collage made of a cowboy boot, a dollar bill and a traffic sign saying “Right turn only”.

The temperature curve on the second double page shows the increase in the number of votes between July 2015 and May 2016. Among other statements, the author remarks, “Donald Trump has reversed the political game board”.

falter, a The election of Austria’s Federal President had to be postponed because the envelopes for postal votes could not be glued properly. The magazine makes a satirical comment on this problem on its cover.

la provincia, es The distribution area of this newspaper are the Canary Islands off the African coast. The article is about the elections in Spain and their impact on the trade between Africa and the Canary Islands.

aBc, es This national Newspaper uses illustrations to inform about the elections in Spain. The coverstory is continued over seven pages.

14

de limburger, nl A paper airplane as a symbol of the Brexit: The paper Union Jack has been folded into a plane and is about to be thrown into the air. Since everybody knows that the trajectory and range of paper planes are rather limited, the motif can be seen as a comment on this issue. The results of the vote cover 11 pages.

de tijd, B The front page has been ripped and reveals the British flag underneath.

Børsen, dK This double page deals with the possible consequences of the Brexit for the Danes: travelling, shopping and currency. The illustration shows the changes the Brexit will bring about. aachener nachrichten, d This is the only newspaper in the competition that chose a more humorous approach to the Brexit: Mr. Bean is leaving the EU with big strides.

vecinul.net, ro “Divided Union”, is what the headline on the topic ‘Brexit’ means. One of the 12 golden stars on the wooden wall symbolizing the European Union has been eaten away by a mouse. A nice way of visualising this issue.

data-journalistic projects are presented in print and online

The competition, naturally, offers online categories, one of which is data journalism. Some newspapers have established special departments to work on those projects: Tages-Anzeiger (D), Financial Times (GB), Berliner Morgenpost (D). The results are both printed and posted online.

Berliner morgenpost, d The printed version presents the elections in Berlin by means of special infographics. The online version leaves it to the users to find their way through the data material. 02 multimedia stories for special projects Multimedia projects are not standard routine, but special newspaper projects necessitating a high amount of organisation and planning time. A lot of projects in the competition do also work on smartphones. This is to be considered in the future since there is a trend towards using smartphones as a chief medium for information.

expressen, s This Swedish newspaper reconstructs “Palme’s last path” in their multimedia story for smartphones. It is exactly 350 meters or 412 steps before Olof Palme was assassinated in 1986, 30 years ago. In the course of the story, maps with Palme’s last steps are inserted. By means of text, films and photos, the readers are

carried through that final moment of Palme’s life. The readers can decide on their own how fast they would like to go through this, since the story is divided into 44 pages. Link: www.expressen.se/nyheter/palmes-sista-steg

the front page is devoted to a single topic

Børsen, dK Shocking news for investors in the headline of this national business paper: 750 million have disappeared with an oil producing company. This is why a black oil pool is dripping across the page. A striking visualisation.

It has become a trend to clear front pages by replacing the usual standard amount of news by a single splendidly visualised topic. The reason is that small news items can be found online or in social media. Also reports on topics that have not yet been published in other media are made for the printed medium.

04

mindener tageblatt, d The illustration in the colours black, red and yellow announces the topic: 25 years of reunification. The panoramic page contains statistics on the eastern and western part of Germany, figures concerning the year 1990 and today are explained in small infographics.

Quite a number of European newspapers place a major topic on their cover and complement it with background infor-mation on several pages. In this way the newspapers have gained a new role: Where as in the past quick news were in the foreground, it is now the big background story. If necessary, even current topics are treated in the same way. Apart from this, editorial teams show a preference for creating their own topics for coverstories.

Kvinnheringen, n Two students started an experiment accompanied by a journalist from Kvinnheringen: A class of pupils was separated from access to social media for an entire week. Their experiences were shared with the readers in a six-page coverstory.

05

visual storytelling: How to achieve an optimal presentation of contents

Today, newspapers transmit current news on smartphones. So, what is left for the printed medium is to present different topics or more detailed information. For both ways visual storytelling is an ideal means as the print on paper offers ideal conditions for such a presentation. A lot of stories are apt for visualisation. Apart from the big national papers, more and more local and regional papers make use of visual presentations.

aachener Zeitung, d The topic of this double page are couples from 40 years ago and today. The lead-photo on the left shows what a couple looked like 40 years ago, on the right you can see a couple of today. On the bottom of the page black-and-white and colour photos, old and new ones, have been mixed. “Serious in the past, easy-going today”, reads the headline.

nordsee-Zeitung, d This newspaper is issued in Bremerhaven, an important location for the fish industry. So, the topic fish is of general interest. This copy attracts the readers by its headline “The stars on our doorsteps”. The landscape-format picture shows the 20 most important kinds of fish in the Northsea. In small text blocks above and below the picture, information is provided for the readers: occurence, length, weight, maximum age etc. Here it becomes evident how easy it is to prepare topics in an amusing and appealing way.

19

salzburger nachrichten, a “The world of John Doe”, is the headline of a serial in this newspaper. The above page is about the Austrians’ feelings of anxiety, the biggest of which is the fear of spiders. In a chart-like list all kinds of phobia are mentioned, some classified according to gender of the phobic. Small icons break up the page layout.

06 photographic cut and size create a modern appeal Thinking mainly in terms of text and forgetting about the ‘food for the eye’ will necessarily result in a rather boring newspaper. Interesting topics need to be presented in a visually appealing way. A measure to take – with no expenses to follow – is the improvement of photographic cuts and sizes. Extreme vertical or horizontal formats and appropriate sizes give the newspapers a modern touch.

dolomiten, i “Cottages reserved for the elderly is history”, is what the headline announces. The page deals with the situation of the retired population. Cut and size of the photo are chosen in such a way as to make the readers stop and take a good look when leafing through the newspaper.

main-post, d The Queen‘s 90 th birthday is the story on this page. Elizabeth II can be seen in the foreground, her husband Prince Philip is in the background. This page, devoted to a single topic, creates a break in the rhythm of the newspaper by its photographic cut and size.

sonntagsZeitung, cH The lead article on this page is a current issue: “CreditSuisse-chef cuts his own bonus”. By showing only half the face in the portrait an ideal eye-catcher is found.

unusual perspectives are always good for a surprise and are likely to catch the reader‘s eye It is in each textbook on photography, but in practice unusual perspectives are a rare sight in newspapers. It takes the photographer’s eye to discover appropriate motifs and an editorial staff to follow their ideas to produce phantastic pages.

Kurier, a 100 personalities and embarrassing moments, those who were lucky and those who were not – all from the recent year of sports 2015 – have been listed up on this double page under the photo of a horse jumping high through the air.

welt am sonntag kompakt, d A ski jumper, photographed at the moment of taking off from the jump – seen from a worm’s eye view. Such an extreme perspective won’t fail to draw the reader’s attention to the appropriate topic.

photo reportages belong to a journalist‘s repertory

The scene for photo reportages can be in the local or regional section, but also in the weekend issue. Heavy camera equipment is no longer necessary with those perfect cameras installed in mobile phones, which makes photographing an easy job when attending an event or function. A good choice of photos makes a wonderful and authentic story to be presented both in print and online.

sonntagsZeitung, cH “Give me the coal”, is the headline to a photo reportage on charcoal burners. It encompasses six pages of photos plus two additional text pages from a visit to a charcoal kiln in Transylvania. The lead-in says, “In Easteuropean woodlands the last members of their trade do a ‘dirty job’ to make sure that the fire on our barbecues won’t go out.” It is an excellent example of the complexity of information in pictures which are often hard to translate into words.

09

adequate visualisation is a permanent challenge with editorial teams

In order to present a topic as best as possible, visuals can do a wonderful job. The process should start while composing an article. A combination of headline and picture is a proven means for a gripping start into a topic.

welt am sonntag Kompakt, d The headline “Unbearably lonely” is followed by the lead-in “For all those lonely people in our country a horrible time is coming near: Christmas. So many people are drowned in their loneliness...” The black raindrops serve as an adequate visualisation.

die Zeit, d On the occasion of the VW emission scandal Die Zeit has focussed on gathering the company’s problems: recall actions and conversions, motor vehicle taxes, legal expenses and a blow to their image. Those are the five points placed above the arrows pressing on the two letters VW. In combination with the headline “VW’s crash test”, a gripping start into the article has been managed. Exactly this is what a good visualisation aims at.

alternative storytelling: illustrating complex contents

In the future, alternative storytelling will be given an even bigger role since it is able to convey complex contents to the readers in a clear and distinct way. Now that more media designers have been employed in editorial teams the results are significantly better than before.

rheinische post, d “Bad Islam, good Islam”, is the headline on this double page. The centre shows a Quran with opened pages. Next to it important suras are quoted. On the right and left, this religion is explained by means of keywords like women’s rights, veiling, tolerance, sharia, jihad, food regulations, compassion etc. The page is closed with infographics at the bottom classifying Islamic denominations into good and bad ones.

le temps, cH The timeline gives a survey of the 50 years of the Montreux jazz festival. The alternative story form is continued over four pages. A state-of-the-art printing press is needed to realise this design since it affords to glue the pages. aBc, es “The hour of truth in the case of Nóos”, runs the headline. The persons depicted on this double page are charged with corruption. Their individual crimes are mentioned in the small text blocks leading to each of the accused by a white line.
