ICMA for Magazines. The ICMA has four categories. This booklet is about the category for magazines. Information on the other categories of the ICMA can be found here: www.creative-media-award.com

The objective of the comeptition: Exchange of creative ideas. There are competitions in a lot of countries on custom media, books, corporate design and magazine design, which take place in separated competitions. The ICMA aims to support the exchange of ideas at the international platform. This is why the call for entries is send to more than 9000 designers, custom media specialists, bookpublishers and magazines worldwide. Further objectives of the competition:  Disclosing trends: The results of the competition give everyone the opportunity to classify his object in international comparison, and to quickly execute optimisation measures for his own product.  Impact outwardly: Winners report intensively on the Awards they have won, on their websites and in print media. They thus underscore their standards of quality and at the same time get involved in their own advertising.  Think tank: Publication of the winners in the ICMA‘s Almanac and on www.creative-mediaaward.com promote their own creativity. What Awards are there? There are Awards in Gold, Silver and Bronze. There are, moreover, Awards of Excellence, presented for outstanding individual performance, for example, for the cover and cover story, photo reportage, illustrations, infographics or the concept of a publication as a whole. Statistics. 411 publications from 17 countries participated in the 6th ICMA The following awards were given:  39 Gold Awards (5th ICMA: 27)  45 Silver Awards (5th ICMA: 25)  31 Bronze Awards (5th ICMA: 22)  as well as Awards of Excellence

Why should I take part in this competition? In the magazine “Page” there was the following quote from a designer about this: “We have been in agreement for some years that there is no cheaper advertising than expensive participation in design competitions. How much more would we have to spend without this simple method in order to attract attention! And what’s nicer than the accolade of colleagues?” Take a look at the websites of well-known designers or large advertising agencies: Almost always you will find a category for competitions, in which they have successfully competed. The ICMA really is a world-wide competition. Winners can advertise with it and show they also work successfully against international competitors.

Call for Entries 7. ICMA INTERNATIONAL CREATIVE MEDIA AWARD BOOKS

INTERNATIONAL CORPORATE MEDIA AWARD

Internationaler Wettbewerb für Corporate Medien, Bücher, Corporate Design und Zeitschriften Deadline: 1. Oktober 2016 International Editorial-Design & Research Forum · N. Küpper · Gutenbergstr. 4 · 40670 Meerbusch · Tel: +49 (0) 21 59 91 16 15 · E-Mail: mail@creative-media-award.com

You can find the Call for Entries for the ICMA also here: www.creative-media-award.com Competition time schedule: You can submit work created between September 1, 2015 and September 30, 2016. Deadline: October 1, 2016 Extension of time: Up to 10 th October 2016 Participation fees  In most categories, the fee is Euro 150;  in the book category, the fee is Euro 75;  in the logo category Euro 35 per logo entered.  Half of the regular fees is payable for student assignments. Announcement of the winners: On 30th November the list of winners will be prospectively published on the website www.creative-media-award.com

Even minor design offices have good chances. When you thumb through this brochure, you will readily see that even minor design offices have very good chances. Fees for participation are reasonable, and there aren‘t any hidden costs. If you have won an Award, you will not be getting any further invoices, such as, for example, for printing cost contributions for an almanac. Why do you have to pay a fee to participate? The competition is completely independent; it is not paid for by any company. Some costs are incurred to enable the competition to get off the ground. This is why a participation fee is levied:  The invitation announcement must be translated and printed.  There are postal charges for mailing the announcements.  There are the rental charges for the conference rooms for the Jury meetings.  The Jury works on a voluntary basis, however, the board and lodging as well as the travel expenses of the members of the Jury should at least be paid for.  Expenses are incurred for the website, for publications about the events, and for disseminating press information.  The document awards for the prize winners must be produced and dispatched by e-mail. This involves a great deal of work which, of course, has to be paid for. Compared to other contests, the participation fee at the ICMA is very low.

From which countries the submissions come from? Traditionally, the ICMA is very well positioned In December, all participants are in the German-speaking world. A great deal informed of their results by e-mail. of presentations for this independent contest come from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Within Europe, designers, inter alia, from Denmark, This brochure provides an overview. But a few of the winner pages can be shown in this brochure. Finland, Belgium, Portugal, Slovakia and Hungary have taken part. All the winner pages are reproduced in the Almanac that is Outside Europe, submissions were also received from Singapore, published as a DVD. India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Russia. INTERNATIONAL EDITORIAL- DESIGN & RESEARCH FORUM MARKETING WITH THE ICMA

The ICMA is also to be a marketing instrument for prize winners. Here you see examples of how winners report on the Awards they have won on their websites and in print media. Trade and specialist media also report on these results. It is always good to throw a positive light on one‘s work both for customers as well as the public at large.

“Migros Magazin”, Switzerland, received two Awards: For the special issue on the subject of “Neighbours” and the dossier “Islam”.

“Schöner Wohnen”, a high-circulation magazine from the publishers Gruner + Jahr, reports on the Award at the 6th ICMA.

”Harper‘s Bazaar Singapore“ reports on the Awards the magazine won at the 6th ICMA.

Students of the Werbe Design Akademie (Advertising Design Academy) Innsbruck are pleased about the Award for their magazine “shortcut”.

In its printed edition, the editors of “Musikfreunde” (Music Friends), Vienna, report on the Awards of Excellence this magazine has won on an entire page.

Synsation Brand Design, Australia, reports on the Awards for the Visual Identity of the Faculty for Arts & Social Sciences of UNSW (University of South Australia).

Success away from the mainstream: Many established magazines suffer from their circulation gradually shrinking. The number of regular readers is declining, and it is difficult to gain new readers. One way out of this quandary is to establish new magazines and thus to address new, younger readers. The advantage of the newcomer is apparent: With a fresh layout and new fonts, new target groups can be addressed. Example: “Fuel from Motor Presse Stuttgart. The magazine features long relaxed stretches of photographs, conveying more an atmosphere with few technical details. Gold at the 6th ICMA.

Photo reportage. From the name “Illustrated”, which is also used preferentially as a synonym for magazines, one recognises the idea behind this genre being established: Not only the text, but above all illustrations are meant to convey information. Many photo reports were submitted at the 6th ICMA. A few exemplary work items are from “ADAC Travel Magazine”, from the magazine “týžden” from Bratislava and from the SPH – Singapore Press Holding.

Newspaper Design and Reading Research This book aims at showing the extended potentials the printed newspaper has today to stand their ground with readers, and set themselves apart from other media. This book is based on research into reader behaviour. To this end, an eye-tracking camera is employed that documents behaviour when a newspaper is read. The results enable us to deduce what the reader-friendly newspaper should look like. The redesigning projects shown in this book are orientated on the research results documented at the end of this book.
