JEAN SHAFIROFF

The First Lady Of Philanthropy’s Love Of Style And Fashion

Jean Shafiroff is an iconic figure that frequently appears on magazine covers and society pages for good reason. The style sections are filled with her images as the  First Lady of Philanthropy. She is recognized for her hard work as a humanitarian as much as she is newsworthy for being one of the most stylish women on the scene today. Jean Shafiroff is a philanthropist, TV host, and author of the book, Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What you Give.

Heralded for her charitable giving and volunteer work, Jean Shafiroff is a prolific figure in social circles and with notable foundations around the world. Her fondness for giving is consistent and she has a genuine earnestness to discover what will make the world a better place.

GOOD DEEDS

Jean Shafiroff’s primary mission is to be a patron of good deeds. Her current credits of charitable work include serving on the boards of the American Humane, Southampton Hospital Association, NY Women’s Foundation, Mission Society of NYC, Casita Maria, Couture Council (Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology), French Heritage Society, Global Strays, and Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Honorary Board.  A Catholic, Shafiroff served on the board of the Jewish Board for 28 years and is now an Honorary Trustee.

All of Jean Shafiroff’s work is understandably important and why she was most recently bestowed an award in September 2022 of a proclamation naming her the “First Lady of Philanthropy of New York” from NYS Assembly member, Rebecca Seawright, representing the New York State Assembly.

Then in November 2022, the 117th U.S. Congress acknowledged Shafiroff for her work in philanthropy. This recognition was given by U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York.

Jean Shafiroff was also honored by the French Heritage Society in November 2022. She has also been honored by many other charity groups including American Humane, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, New York City Mission Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Surgeons of Hope, Samuel Waxman Cancer Research, Operation Warrior Shield, Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Pet Philanthropy Circle, Animal Zone International, Health Advocates for Older People, Youth Counselling League, the NYC International Film Festival Foundation, the Jewish Board, and the Hadassah. In December 2020, Dan’s Paper named her Philanthropist of the Year at their Long Island Power Women’s Award Ceremony.

A STYLE ICON

Jean Shafiroff’s inspirational journey continues with numerous organizations. One of the many she loves serving for is the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT. The press refers to her as a style icon who supports the artful work of emerging designers from across the globe. Shafiroff ’s constant state of giving is apparent to anyone who meets her. In fact, her sheer sense of goodwill is rather irresistible and makes one realize that it is possible to have a truly harmonious existence. Shafiroff is always driven to convey a message that will positively impact the planet.

The philanthropist’s passion has led to appearing on a number of best dressed lists and she owns a large collection of both couture and ready-to-wear designer ball gowns that include many gowns by Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Mary McFaddan, Victor de Souza, Malan Breton, Zang Toi, B Michael,  as well as pieces by Valentino.

Jean Shafiroff’s own cycle of outfits is refreshingly reflective of her own sensibilities. She simply wears what she feels is beautiful and a perfect statement piece for the event she is attending. Perfectly sensible, Shafiroff will mix elements with her style selections and balance her wardrobe during a busy week of attending multiple fundraisers and galas. She can easily transform her look and wear a hot new suit from a young artist then switch to timeless classics such as blouses and skirts from Gucci and Chanel to breathtaking dresses from Carolina Herrera and the house of Oscar de la Renta. Jean’s style sensibilities are so poignant that she was even selected to be a runway model in Malan Breton’s  Autumn/Winter 2023-24 Collection  debut at New York Fashion Week.

FASHION AS ART

A patron of the arts, Jean Shafiroff feels it is important to recognize that fashion is one of the most notable forms of expression. To say that the artwork of fashion is worthy of a museum is nothing short of pure truth. Shafiroff’s passion for fashion and interest in supporting the industry is in fact so strong that her own personal collection of ball gowns will one day be donated to a museum.

Jean Shafiroff ’s philanthropic eye is also well-tuned to the other side of fashion, which is the business side. Her educational background at Columbia Business School’s prestigious MBA program as well as her time working on Wall Street taught her to recognize the importance of a billion-dollar industry. While fashion may make a small percent of titans wealthy, the industry also employs millions of people. The worth of the people behind the scenes is priceless and necessary. Industry workers keep the dresses on racks as they feed their families and put roofs over their heads.

Jean Shafiroff cares about people, so it is no surprise she takes time to applaud all involved. Her purpose to live life fully as a humanitarian helps thousands of individuals associated with all her causes, including support for the fashion industry.

It is her thought-provoking ideas on both philanthropy and style that have created a position for her as one of the leading authorities on the art of giving. All the charitable work Shafiroff has done to date is a sincere accomplishment. Along with her 1.2 million Instagram followers, we know it is only the beginning of so much more to come.

THE GILDED AGE

A GETAWAY TO HYDE PARK

My first glimpse into the American Gilded Age lifestyle happened in 2017 during a day trip to the fifty-four-room estate formerly owned by Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt in Hyde Park, New York. Located seventy miles from New York City along the banks of the Hudson River in Dutchess County, this national historic site was one of a few exquisite, preserved aristocratic homes in Hyde Park that I visited and fell in love with instantly. For all history buffs out there looking to step back in time and tour new historical landmarks in 2023, step into the Gilded Age at Hyde Park National Historic Sites.

THE VANDERBILT

MANSION

Frederick Vanderbilt was the third of eight children born to William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt in 1856 in New York City and the grandson of railroad and shipping tycoon, Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt.

The Vanderbilt Mansion was purchased by Frederick and his wife Louise as a seasonal home in 1895, and just one of several homes occupied by the Vanderbilts where lavish house parties and tea gatherings with neighbors took place.

Reconstructed in 1896 into a Beaux-Arts style home that defined wealth and privilege, the Vanderbilt family chose this mansion for its picturesque location along the east banks of the Hudson River. Since 1940, the National Park Service has owned and operated the Vanderbilt Mansion and continues to preserve its beauty and History by welcoming visitors to tour the elegant home and colorful Italian garden all year long. Visitors can explore the central elliptical hall where the Vanderbilt’s elite guests were greeted by the hired help, the reception room, dining room, the Vanderbilt’s bedrooms, and Frederick Vanderbilt’s study. Info: nps.gov/vama

FDR/SPRINGWOOD ESTATE

Once your tour at the Vanderbilt Mansion is complete, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Springwood estate awaits your visit next door. The 32nd President of the United States was born at the Springwood estate to Sara Delano and James Roosevelt in 1882 and returned there often throughout his presidency with his wife Eleanor to relax. FDR embraced his Hyde Park roots and quoted, “All that is within me cries out to go back to my home on the Hudson River”.

Springwood was built in 1793 and transformed from an Italianate villa to a Colonial-Revival-style mansion in 1916. In 1941, the FDR Presidential Library was opened so Franklin and Eleanor could preserve and share personal and presidential items with future Americans for generations to come.

The estate remained FDR’s lifelong home until his death in 1945. The National Park Service acquired ownership of the forty-nine-room home in 1946 and continues to preserve FDR and Eleanor’s legacy through tours. Visitors can explore FDR’s private study at the presidential library where he carried out and archived important political assignments including his famous Fireside Chats, The Day of Infamy speech, and New Deal proposal. At the Springwood visitors can explore a collection of family portraits, artwork, FDR’s customized wheelchair, and guest rooms once occupied by Winston Churchill and King George VI. Visitors can also explore The Roosevelt Coach House and Stable, Sara Roosevelt’s Rose Garden, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Stone Cottage at Val-Kill, and the burial site of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt. PHILADELPHIA

IT’S TIME TO DISCOVER BROTHERLY LOVE

Looking for a getaway that captures history, culture, and great food? Our nation’s first capital—

The City of Brotherly Love—is an appealing urban getaway. William Penn founded the city as a place of religious tolerance and named it by combining two Greek words: love (phileo) and brother (adelphos). Robert Indiana’s bright-red LOVE sculpture illustrates the city’s raison d’être; notable 18th-century sites reflect its history, and skyscrapers showcase the present.

Here, some recommendations from my most recent visit.

SEE

Visit Independence Hall, a U.S. National Historic Landmark, where the Founding Fathers ratified the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and 13 states ratified the Articles of Confederation in 1781. Many historic sites in the Old City are of interest: the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross House, the Museum of the American Revolution, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, and 625 South Delhi Street, an Underground Railroad rowhouse, where Harriet Tubman took shelter in the 1850s. Museum Mile along Benjamin Franklin Parkway is an artfilled cultural mecca.

At the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art, you can run up the Rocky grand staircase (or taxi to the street side rear entrance) before touring the permanent collection, with American furnishings and accessories, paintings from Rubens to Renoir and sculptures from Brancusi to Oldenburg and Saint Gaudens.

Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) tickets include access to the Beaux Arts style Rodin Museum of Art, which Jules E. Mastbaum donated to the city along with his collection of bronze and marble masterworks: The Thinker, The Gates of Hell, The Kiss, the Burghers of Calais and Rodin’s Hands.

Next door, The Barnes Foundation opened in Center City in 2011 to showcase Alfred Barnes’ impressive collection of artworks—186 by Renoir, 69 by Cezanne, 59 by Matisse, and 46 by Picasso—precisely as he had meticulously placed them in 1922, within his original house museum, in Merion, PA; here, the 4000 pieces of art—including folk art and metalworks—are more readily accessed and better preserved.

DINE

Michelin-starred chef Jean George Vongerichten oversees all the outlets at Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia, located on the top floors of the Comcast Technology Center. Chef de Cuisine Cornelia Suhr reigns at Jean George, the fine dining restaurant on the 59th floor, where a glamorous staircase connects it with JG Sky High. The menu at this swank, glasswalled cocktail bar on the 60th-floor features calamari, caviar, crudos, compote, olive cake, and cappuccino, all served in a superb setting under an atrium-like ceiling. On the ground level, the Comcast Tower complex houses  Vernick Fish, a contemporary oyster bar headed by local James Beard Award-winning Chef Greg Vernick.

At  Her Place Supper Club, Amanda Shulman and her team serve dinner parties for 18 guests twice nightly (6 and 8:30 pm) from Wednesday to Saturday in a small, street-front dining room decorated with appealing copies of French masters. As diners view the action in the open kitchen— whipping palm purée, plucking sage leaves for the fryer, slicing ducks— Amanda narrates. My multicourse, French-inspired, fixed-price dinner prepared included paté en croute, quiche, soufflé, sliced duckling, and éclairs. (Walk-ins are welcome to try new dishes on Mondays.)

STAY

The entry into the Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia, within a former bank building (c. 1908), leads to a majestic neoclassical space with Corinthian-styled marble columns, marble slab walls, and windows that stretch to the ultra-high ceiling. The desks for registration and concierge and lounge seating are in the periphery of an expanse that houses Richard Sandoval’s Aqimero restaurant, where the chef serves Latin-inspired cuisine enhanced by wood-fired, grilled items and paired with a mezcal menu.

The hotel was renovated in 2016 and features rooms with city views, high-tech electronics, and luxury amenities, including an accessible top-opening safe in a night-table drawer and a perfectly-placed hall mirror. On the 30th floor, Mimoza, a concierge with a remarkable memory for names, faces, and drink preferences, welcomes Club Guests to the comfy, highceilinged, wood-paneled Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, which overlooks City Hall, serves food five times daily, and provides complimentary Internet access.

Finish your getaway at The Richel D’Ambra Spa & Salon is a soothing, decades-old wellness refuge elegantly redecorated in elegant greys and white-to-cream colors. The pet-friendly hotel is one of more than 35 hotels participating in the perks that come with the Visit Philly Overnight Package.

GRAND CAYMAN

DISCOVER TRUE CARIBBEAN BEAUTY

If March’s usually gray-skyed and chilly arrival in the Big Apple makes you feel like breaking away to a place full of sunshine, palm trees, and warm blue waters, then we have a destination for you! But, of course, that’s the Cayman Islands, specifically Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Caribbean islands that also include Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Everyone speaks English there because the Cayman Islands are a British overseas territory, having been a part of Britain since 1670. Another plus for American visitors—the U.S. dollar is legal tender. Cayman Airways and JetBlue fly nonstop to GCM from JFK, so pack up, and you’ll be soaking up the sun in no time.

George Town is the “big” city on Grand Cayman, located on the West Side of the island. It’s also where the country’s famed SevenMile Beach is, that inviting stretch of white sand that’s dotted with lovely resorts.

Choose an authentic luxury experience on the northern end of that beautiful beach, where simply lounging in the sun is a significant sport. Consider The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman for its fantastic service, a gorgeous spa, and delicious treatments. For ultra-private oceanfront bungalows, choose the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa; at the Westin Grand Cayman Seven-Mile Resort and Spa, be sure to dine in its world-class restaurants, like Woto, where talented chefs serve up its spectacular Japanese-inspired fresh fish.

Locally sourced cuisine is abundant on the island, with seafood naturally taking center stage at favorite local waterfront places like Ms. Piper’s Kitchen + Garden (taste the snapper here) and the Grand Old House, where you’ll struggle to choose between the spicy conch stew, the seafood curry, and their signature lobster thermidor. Our answer is to go there more than once during your stay!

ADVENTURES: SOFT

Tear yourself away from those comfortable cabanas and tropical drinks to have island adventures, for Grand Cayman has plenty to do with active experiences. Famous for the special spot called Stingray City, that’s a place to begin. Located on a submerged sand bar, with water only waist deep, this is where more than 50 stingrays call home. They are docile creatures who love to say hello to visitors, even giving them a kiss or two.

Go early in the morning (Five Star Charters runs a beautiful speedboat just for your group, or book with one of the many public tour boats that go daily) to avoid the crowds, then add on a visit to Starfish Point and Rum Point to take a kayak, jet ski or tubing adventure. So, jump on in; the water’s fine!

Another easy adventure is off to the East End of the island, where the Cayman Crystal Caves await at Old Man Bay. Think of pirate lairs and buried treasure as you enter these three caves found deep in the tropical rainforest on a guided tour. It’s nearly two hours of a leisurely walk that piques your imagination and astounds the senses. Add in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park to see more of the unique flora and fauna that make this island so lovely. Keep an eye out for the endangered blue iguana, giant lizards only found here, where a concerted effort is being made to keep this remarkable reptile from extinction.

ADVENTURES: SERIOUS

For more serious adventure, scuba diving off Grand Cayman is legendary. With numerous PADI 5-Star dive operations (located on the West Side), beginners can take introductory dives and PADI coursework for dive certification. At the same time, experienced divers can add to their knowledge with advanced courses (we did a NITROX air certification while visiting) or jump in. Living the Dream Divers is our favorite: their comfortable boats, knowledgeable dive masters, and long-standing reputation as one of the island’s best operations. Get wet, and you’re likely to swim right past spotted eagle rays along with massive stingrays, sea turtles, octopus (look closely for them, as they change color to match the coral), eels, and gorgeous coral gardens and walls at the more than 365 dive sites that make this a natural paradise for undersea lovers.

Deep-sea fishing for tuna, blue marlin, and more (you can even compete in a tournament if you’re feeling confident) is another must. Or grab a kitesurfing board and take off across the water, where you’ll need some strong core muscles to hang on). And if your idea of serious adventure is on the golf course, there are two beautiful waterfront courses on the island.

Whatever your idea of fun, be it taking it easy and soaking up the sun or getting out and finding adventure, Grand Cayman is truly a place that lets you find your bliss.

GLAMPING IN THE CATSKILLS

THE PERFECT MOUNTAIN ESCAPE

Need to escape for a few days? A place where you can get back to nature and spend the evenings sitting around a warm campfire under a star-filled sky in the north woods of the Catskills? If a camping experience sounds good to you, perhaps a stay at AutoCamp Catskills is just what you’re looking for.

Located in the Hudson Valley town of Saugerties, just 2 hours from NYC, AutoCamp Catskills provides outdoor experiences with up-scale camping accommodations. The resort’s 37 acres are home to 65 Airstream trailers, 10 Cabin suites (several of which are accessible), and 10 BaseCamps (Airstream + luxury tent) strategically positioned to provide scenic views of the resort’s forested grounds.

Once upon a time the Airstream was an iconic American travel trailer of the ’50s and ’60s. But AutoCamp’s version of the 31-foot gleaming campers is a far cry from your grandpa’s mid-century camper. Instead, these Airstreams are custom-designed for AutoCamp to provide an ultimate camping experience. The main room comprises a bright, airy sitting room and a fully-functional kitchenette. In the bedroom, a queen-sized TempurPedic bed with high-thread count linens is tucked under a panoramic window. A modern private bathroom offers a walk-in rain shower and a spacious vanity. Outside, a private patio with a fire pit, Adirondack chairs, and a dining area provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine or a campfire-cooked meal.

THE GATHERING SPOT

The Cabins offer a full kitchen, dining area, and a covered front porch with a fire pit and barbeque. Airstreams and Cabins offer a convertible sofa, a flatscreen TV with streaming services, heat and A/C, a microwave, a mini-fridge, cookware, and accessories. The Luxury Tents offer a king-sized TempurPedic bed, electricity, dual fan and heater, a mini-fridge, a convertible sofa, and a private outdoor fire pit. In addition, the Tents have round-the-clock access to spa-inspired restrooms and showers in the Clubhouse.

The Clubhouse has a hip yet rustic vibe and is a great spot to gather and socialize with fellow campers. Built in a classic Hudson Valley style, the Clubhouse’s exposed framing and beams present a barn-inspired feel, and a long wall of large folding doors offers a direct connection to the spacious outdoor patio and lawn area equipped with a variety of games such as corn hole. The multi-use space has plenty of plush seating, a modern indoor firepit, a bar, and a lounge perfect for events (music performances most Friday and Saturday evenings and Happy Hour daily) or just relaxing and socializing.

Don’t feel like cooking? The Clubhouse menu features sandwiches, wraps, breakfast burritos, artisan pizzas, baked goods, artisan breads, and coffee. Local purveyors supply all these. In addition, the Clubhouse store offers barbecue kits with steak, chicken, or sausage as well as wine, beer, assorted gourmet meats and cheeses, and a variety of snacks.

PLENTY OF ACTIVITIES

On weekends your wellness will be addressed with the complimentary guided Meditation and Yoga Flow session. Explore the camp’s grounds with one of the complimentary bikes. For a more involved experience, participate in the Mindful Outdoor Experience of Forest Bathing, the Japanese-inspired practice that leads you through a series of sensory invitations to bring awareness to the present moment while observing the wonder of the natural world. Other activities include Storytelling/Fireside chats, movie nights, and food and beverage tastings. AutoCamp is excited about plans to have its outdoor pool ready for the summer of 2023.

Take time to explore the neighboring historic towns of Woodstock or Saugerties. Both have great dining choices, art galleries, and eclectic shops. The Opus 40 Sculpture Park and Arts Center is a fascinating attraction in Saugerties. Artist Harvey Fite created a remarkable 6.5-acre in-earth bluestone sculpture by hand, entirely from stone harvested on-site. The 55 acres of Opus 40 offer walking, picnicking, and a majestic view of the Catskill Mountains. Music buffs will want to check out Bearsville Theater and the grounds created by Albert Grossman. The legendary music manager represented artists like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and The Band, all of whom played and recorded in the recording studio and theater.

Other nearby activities include hiking on the dozens of trails throughout the Catskills, like the Ashokan Rail Trail or the Saugerties Light House. In the winter, ski, ride, or snow tube at any of three local ski areas. In warmer weather, navigate the ropes course or dare to ride The SkyRider Tour, the second longest zipline in the world, at Hunter Mountain. Finally, experience some of the Hudson Valley’s great craft beverages with a brewery/ distillery/winery tour.

THE BEST OF BANFF

A UNION OF ADVENTURE & INDIGENOUS INFLUENCE

Astone’s throw from the base of the Canadian Rockies, the small town of Banff offers a convergence of art and adventure. So, of course, your first assumption is that skiing must be epic, and you’d be right. The ski season ends in May! But the town’s roots are so intimately entwined with the indigenous community that there’s also a unique confluence of culture. As a result, extraordinary micro-moments of insight seem to unfold naturally as you adventure and meander through the shops.

I spent a few days there chatting with many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Admittedly, I was keen on experiencing adventure in the Canadian Rockies. Still, I also reflect on the many exciting interactions I had with indigenous artists, shopkeepers, and tour guides in the area. I learned that the allure of Banff runs more profound than its snowy slopes—right down to its deepest roots.

STAY

Fairmont Banff Springs is the ultimate alpine aspiration. The 4-star property, which has been in operation for 130 years, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts nearly 740 rooms. It’s nestled among the mist and clouds around 7,000 feet of elevation, so its elevated experience should be no surprise. In addition, the property is a short drive to the downtown Banff area, so it feels secluded enough while allowing hassle-free visits to the many eclectic downtown shops.

If your goal is the ease of access to the downtown charm—in the form of art galleries, shops, and restaurants—then The Juniper awaits your arrival. Not only is the property within walking distance of downtown, but its driveway abuts a significant trailhead. For those interested in local history or archeology, the staff can tell you about the on-property  kiguli—a 4,000-year-old pit house, generally built by Secwepemc or Shuswap people. Plus, it’s the last known kiguli in Banff. Of course, you’ll learn about its history and the hotel’s plans to protect it!

TRAVEL

PLAY

Nestled in a long, winding valley surrounded by mountains, Banff is a wonderland—any time of year. Of course, skiing is the top on the list, with Mount Norquay and Sunshine Village welcoming guests each season. But the snowy trails also offer a chance to tour the Athabasca Glacier with the folks at Zucmin Guiding. For a more hands-on experience, take a medicine walk with Indigenous-owned Mahikan Trails. Or switch up your perspective by booking a helicopter tour or taking a ride on the Banff Gondola.

But be sure to leave time to meander the downtime area, which is best done without an agenda. The mountains loom in every direction, making for an idyllic setting to sip a latte from  Wild Flour Bakery and wander from shop to shop.

If you’re an art lover, you may have noticed some striking murals in either the Edmonton or Calgary airports. You can also visit the gallery of the Indigenous Visual Artist and the artist himself, Jason Carter. The walls of his gallery are lined with his bright, geometric-inspired paintings featuring the mountains just outside the door of his shop—and plenty of bear and bison. There are always original works available—sculptures and paintings—and carry-on friendly notecards.

Visiting Banff delighted me to no end and changed me just a bit. And, ultimately, isn’t that why we travel? I’m grateful that my experiences in the Banff area included the diverse histories and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of this province. I also want to acknowledge the traditional territories in Alberta, home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit who have called these territories home for time immemorial.

For more information on Banff, visit banfflakelouise.com

EAT

After a day of exploring the slopes and below, take in the local cuisine with a bowl of Bison poutine. It’s the kind of comfort food that’s not just cozy but also gives the nod to the area’s deep respect for bison. Shredded bison is piled atop perfect fries (crispy outside, pillowing inside), then topped with cheese curds and bison gravy.

But if you decide to switch it up and try a few of Banff’s local favorites, you can’t go wrong with any Alberta beef offerings at  The Maple Leaf—in the downtown area. The folks in Banff were quick (and proud) to remind me that folks in Alberta don’t mess around with beef portions. So, if you’re looking for a modest cut, chat with the wait staff or be ready to fill your mini-fridge with leftovers.  The Maple Leaf also serves delicious hazelnut-crusted halibut, duck breast, and vegetarian options. Plus, everything is well-labeled regarding dietary choices, including gluten-free, vegan, and nuts.

CRUISING IN BURGUNDY

SLOW DOWN AND WATCH THE WORLD GO BY

When the hustle and bustle of New York seem overwhelming, there’s a way to escape into a blissful world of slow travel through gorgeous landscapes with nary a care in the world. The European that bliss on La Belle Epoque, the 12-passenger luxury hotel barge that European Waterways runs through the Burgundy Canal, the waterway system first planned in the 1600s and finally completed in 1833. This isn’t your typical 20-story cruise ship teeming with as many people found in Times Square at rush hour; instead, it’s a sleek, small barge that meanders its way through the French countryside, moving along the canal at a leisurely pace.

While the vision of meandering through Burgundy was irresistible for wine lovers like us, European Waterways runs these small-boat barge cruises in nine countries, including France, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland, Italy, Scotland, England, and Ireland. But no matter which trip calls to you, there’s world-class wine on board, part of the all-inclusive pricing that encompasses everything from transportation to and from the barge, stateroom, incredible gourmet meals, all excursions, hot tub, and bicycles on board, as well as a fully stocked bar. All cruises last for six nights.

PARIS: START TO FINISH

We got France’s best for our Burgundy cruise, with city and country experiences. Because the adventure begins and ends in Paris, building in a day or two (or more) on each side of the cruise to enjoy the City of Lights is simple. So, spend a few incredibly comfortable nights at the Hilton Paris Opera, a spectacular hotel built in 1889, be amazed by the Grand Salon as you enter and grab a Paris Go City All-Inclusive Pass.

That pass gets you onto the hop-on/hop-off bus. It includes entrance to the best Paris offers, from the Musee d’Orsay and the Louvre art museums to the incredible Saint Chappelle chapel, up the Eiffel Tower, and to a fashion show at Galeries Lafayette (the famed department store steps from the Hilton Opera).

When the cruise begins, it’s easy and comfortable to ride south into Burgundy, where the  La Belle Epoque  barge awaits, anchored in picturesque countryside. Champagne is ready, and the attentive six-person crew (including the captain and our incredibly talented chef) is, too. Settling into our small but comfy below-deck stateroom, it doesn’t dawn on us that soon we are going to watch the portholes move up and down so close to the walls of the locks that we’re sure the barge will be damaged—yet it never does.

BARGE ADVENTURES

The cuisine onboard sets an incredibly high bar from the first night’s dinner to the last morning’s breakfast. With a considerable breakfast spread each morning to a threecourse lunch and a four-course dinner featuring cheeses to die for, expert wine pairings (from the Burgundy region and beyond), and incredibly memorable entrees and desserts, the food onboard are world-class. And if you’re interested, the chef will invite you into the compact kitchen to see just how it’s done.

38 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2023 TRAVEL

PICTURESQUE VILLAGES

Happily, as the barge moves slowly across the bucolic Burgundy landscape each morning, it’s easy to hop off and wander ahead of it, via foot or bicycle, to the picturesque French villages along the way (working off some of that gorgeous food in the process). Instead, mornings are devoted to soaking up the sun, reading a favorite novel, and watching the fascinating process of moving through the canal’s locks, which happens over and over again all along the way.

Afternoons mean incredibly curated excursions; on our cruise, from Tanlay to Venarey-les-Laumes, we explored Chablis and visited Domaine Laroche, tasted their incredible, aromatic Grand Cru white wines, and discovered the story of St. Martin and the monks who began the history of Chablis. Next, we wandered into a 16th-century chateau with spectacular gardens and Renaissance murals on the interior walls. Finally, we explored the nearby Champagne region, where Maison Alexandre Bonnet poured some reserve Champagnes.

In Champagne, we made our way to Chateau de Ricey-Bas for a tour of the family estate of the Baron and Baroness. It was followed by a visit to the Chateau de Commarin on the last full day of the cruise, meeting the charming Count Bertrand de Vogue, whose family has lived here since the 13th century.

Each bespoke experience was memorable and spectacular in its way, including the day we visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abbayé de Fontenay, constructed in 1118, and every day on the barge, moving sedately through the Burgundy countryside reminded us of just how much human history this picturesque landscape has witnessed.

Leaving the idyllic barge cruise and returning to the crowded streets of Paris was something of a shock. Still, as we settled into the hip and modern Hilton Trocadero on a quiet street near the Eiffel Tower, that comfortable hotel made it easy to begin re-entry into our fast-paced city life again. But something had changed in that easygoing week on our barge trip, as we discovered that taking it slow and easy has a charm that’s as appealing as our significant city lives.

MIRRORS COLLECTIVE

REFLECTING ON ONE MAN’S PASSION

During the pandemic, Larry Shvetsov, founder of one of America’s top glass and mirror manufacturers, transformed his career from one he loved to one he’s intensely passionate about. He went to an empty Brooklyn factory, tinkering with things he could do by himself, created some mirror designs, and the result was Mirrors Collective, a high-end online custom mirror purveyor.

Mirrors Collective’s designs are dictated by the stateof-the-art production technology already existing at its workshop. Shvetsov came up with the concept in 2019, but the slowdown gave him time to crystalize things, and it launched in January 2021. So far, there are three lines, Essentials, Bind, and Wrong Geometries, plus collaborations—made-to-order designs, available at its online shop and on 1stDibs.

DESIGNER & MEDIA INTEREST

The new firm has already garnered attention from design media, including  Design Milk and  Surface magazines, and architects and interior designers have taken notice. One decorator purchased a piece from the Wrong Geometry series for the residence of a major celebrity whose identity remains a secret. “I don’t even know their name because it was not given to us,” Shvetsov laughs. “I just know that the apartment was crazy expensive, and we had to sign airtight agreements that we won’t take pictures, and we won’t solicit more information.”

Designer collaborations are in the works at Mirrors Collective. The first is with AD100 designer Campion Platt, who is creating a limited-edition capsule collection exploring sculptural design and reflective surfaces. Utilizing his vast knowledge and passion for luxury aesthetics, Platt aims to design and elevate reflective surfaces that are as much art as they are décor. In glimmering sculptural forms, the Platt pieces make a bold statement with chunky geometric shapes.

“The Platt collection marks the beginning of Mirrors Collective’s journey to encourage the consumer’s curiosity connected to mirrors, reflective properties, and the home,” the designer said in a statement on the project. “The goal is to encourage a shift in the perception of mirrors as simply functional items to beautiful pieces of art, transforming the look, feel and atmosphere of one’s home.”

Another collaboration is upcoming with New York-based interior designer Laurie Sheindlin, who called on Shvetsov to produce a mirror she designed for a Tribeca residence. “She knew what I’m capable of with all of these machines I have here and sent me the design,” he says. The piece turned out so well they’ve decided to produce a collection; additional designs by Sheindlin are forthcoming.

Shvetsov hopes to establish Mirrors Collective as the goto source for interior designers, architects, and product designers. “If you need a tool, you think of Home Depot. I would like to have designers think of Mirrors Collective when they need a mirror. That’s my goal.”

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

Shapes are essential in the glass industry. The specialized CNC machinery at Mirrors Collective, costing over $500,000, allows Shvetsov to create shapes in-house without relying on outside vendors, who are invariably late. “My reputation is quick in lead time; we can produce mirrors in one to two weeks,” he says, while other companies take five to seven weeks. “And that’s a big deal because everybody wants everything right away, especially designers.”

Everything he needs to produce great work is all in-house. He even created his shipping crates, which are made on-site. The containers are made of corrugated cardboard, which is recyclable. “We don’t use anything harmful to the environment. As an environmentalist, it’s important.”

FOUND HIS CALLING

In need of a job after immigrating from Ukraine in 1999, his mother, who had already settled in the U.S., asked around and found him a position at a glass company, and he fell in love with the entire process. He picked up the skills quickly and, within six months, was made head glazier. “I never thought I would do this…but it’s been 23 years now.”

By 2004 Shvetsov founded his firm, Crystal Glass and Mirror Corporation in Brooklyn, which makes the products for many high-end brands appreciative of his unmatched artistry. For this craftsman, it will always be quality work first.

MINDIE’S MUSINGS

MAINTAINING A POSITIVE MINDSET

uthor and motivational speaker Mindie Barnett answers your questions about life, navigating these stressful and uncertain times, while steering you down a more straightforward path.

We welcome your questions and invite you to reach out to Mindie at mindiesmusings1@gmail.com.

Dear Mindie,

I’ve seen many online and social media postings about being lucky and the importance of manifesting. I’ve never been a real believer in that sort of thing, but lately, I’m starting to feel like if it’s working for others, maybe I should try it. Is there any truth to that movement, and if so, how can you know it will work? I’m just worried about entirely giving myself to the universe. Am I a control freak? Please let me know what you think.

Sincerely,

Dear Skeptical,

I think you’re spot on to doubt what you’re seeing. I’ve been seeing a great deal of this trend on Instagram, and reading your letter prompted me to dive deeply into what this is all about. The “movement” is called the “Lucky Girl Syndrome,” and it’s essentially a notion that if you put what you desire and hope to achieve into the universe, the universe will respond positively. In a nutshell, you’re proclaiming you already possess the fruits of your labor, thus coining yourself “lucky.” The problem is there is no noted “labor” to back up one’s proclamation.

This so-called Lucky Girl Syndrome is based on the mere fact you simply state your wish, and it will be instantly granted. That ideal is harmful for a variety of reasons: It gives the illusion one is borderline narcissistic, according to some experts. They say it can easily be assumed that the proclamation gives the notion one is entitled and deserving of all things good, regardless of circumstances.

In addition, the idea backs up the ill understanding that anything good which happens to women is based on dumb luck, rather than skill and talent. Lucky Girl Syndrome also doesn’t consider that life is not always fair. It also ignores the truth that some people are simply more privileged than others and the systemic biases that exist in the world.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with maintaining a positive mindset. It’s an attribute, but you must back up that mentality with challenging work and a plan of action. In rare cases, the things one wishes for may come true with pure luck, but one can’t bank on that. So, you must be intentional, as well. Otherwise, this notion teeters on what the American Psychological Association has coined “magical thinking,” the belief that the thoughts or wishes of another can influence the behavior of others. And that is a very unhealthy mindset to maintain.

My advice is to go ahead and manifest your dreams and goals. A vision board, journaling, creating a voice recording to play back to yourself daily, or any other routine to remind yourself of your goals and vision is a healthy way to tap into this so-called “syndrome.” But most importantly, you must create a plan of action. A strong and positive mindset and some elbow grease take you far!

Shout your hopes and wishes, and then do the work

Love,  Mindie

THE PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION

HOSTS THE 25TH ANNUAL PRO-AM TENNIS & GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) hosted its annual Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournaments in South Florida. The tournaments were a five-day event combining the 2023 Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues and annual Pro-Am Tournaments. 2023 is a double-anniversary for he PCF as it was both the 25th Anniversary of the PCF in Palm Beach and the 30th Anniversary year of the Foundation itself.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is the world’s leading philanthropic organization that funds lifesaving cancer research. Founded in 1993 by Mike Milken, PCF has financed nearly $800 million of innovative research by 2,200 scientists at 220 leading cancer centers in 22 countries worldwide. DELICIOUS ABRUZZO

THE ITALIAN WINE REGION TO DISCOVER

American lovers of Italian wines are usually fans of Tuscany’s famed “Super Tuscan” red blends, of the Barolos and Barbarescos of the Piedmont, the Prosecco Superiore from the Conegliano Valdobbiadene region and perhaps even some of the volcanic bottlings from Sicily, but there’s a region we’ll bet isn’t quite on your radar—yet

White Grape: Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

If sipping white wine by the warm seaside (or while dreaming of that seaside) is more to your taste, then Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is the grape to remember. With its unique minerality and acidic backbone, often with a slight spiciness, it’s like no other wine you’re used to drinking, a yellow quaff characterized with flavors of citrus and yellow stone fruits. Usually produced in stainless steel tanks, the wine has a surprisingly long life, many aging well up to ten years in the bottle. For the region’s best, look for Emidio Pepe’s biodynamic version, which can run over $100 a bottle; more budget friendly yet still dry and delicious versions of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo include Tenuta I Fauri’s Baldovino ($11) and Masciarelli Winery’s Linea Classica ($15).

Rosé: Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo

That’s Abruzzo, where wine has been made since ancient times in this fertile region sandwiched between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. It’s a bit over 100 miles due east of Rome, with wineries located mostly in the plains, with gorgeous views of both mountains and sea. That positioning makes for an excellent diurnal shift, with warm days and cool nights, perfect for growing happy grapes that yield wines with names you may have never heard before.

Red Grape: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a varietal that might sound familiar, but this one has no relation to the Montepulciano found in Tuscany. It’s the backbone of Abruzzo’s wine production, a big, beautiful red from the Sangiovese family, that in the best versions found here will remind you of a big Napa Cabernet. Try the top-notch Castorani Jarno Rosso IGT ($50), made of 100 percent Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, with its dense red stone fruit flavors backed with a beautiful structure as it slides down your throat. This exemplary red wine is made at the winery now owned by ex-Formula One racer Jarno Truilli, a stunningly modern place backed with over 200 years of winemaking history with a race car on display.

Other fine producers of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo include Feudo Antico, whose Tullum DOCG is another big Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, bursting with cherry, tobacco and oaky vanilla flavors, and a bargain at about $22 a bottle. And the Passetti family winery’s hilly vineyards yield their famed Testarossa Red, a 100 percent Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that spends 24 months in French oak and offers up firm tannins and flavors of red stone fruit and chocolate, another great buy at about $20 a bottle.

Whether visiting Abruzzo (which we highly recommend) or simply discovering this hidden Italian gem of winemaking, be certain to take the time to try Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, the area’s popular rosé. Made using the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo red grape, these rosés are not of the pale-hued Provence-style; instead, they boast a stronger light cherry red tone, with those cherries also found on the palate. They are bright, dry and fresh, as a good rosé should be, but have more structure and slight tannins to pair perfectly with spicy seafood tapas or strong cheese paired with prosciutto ham.

For a classic entry into try Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, choose Strappelli ($12), Cantina Zaccagnini ($20) or Castorani’s Cadetto ($20); any one of those are fine examples of the wine and will likely lure you into coming back for more, the same result most of Abruzzo’s wines seem to have once you’ve tasted them.

ROSEVALE KITCHEN & COCKTAIL ROOM

CHIC WITH A RETRO TWIST

“Warm and cozy with an edge” is how guests describe the spacious Rosevale Kitchen & Cocktail Room in the two-year-old Civilian Hotel. High ceilings and giant multi-paned front windows are perfect for people-watching while you dine. The reddish-brown leather booths are spacious and can fit as many as six people; it’s worth it to request the super comfy “VIP booth” in the far-right corner to get the bird’s eye view of what’s happening in the dining room and out on the street!

The crowd tends to be young food lovers who like all the surprises: Matzo Ball Soup that features homemade chicken broth, fresh chive and parsley mix with schmaltz poured into your bowl via an elegant rose-covered porcelain teapot! Other dishy options include the quirky  Steak Tartare, which features minced locally sourced sirloin, Thai flavors, lime juice, and shrimp crackers. The French Fries are unique since they are fried in beef tallow instead of vegetable oil. Haven’t had a Fried Bologna Sandwich since you were six? There’s one on the  Rosevale  menu that includes Mortadella, Provolone, and Cherry Pepper-Dijonnaise, and it is truly an intense mix of flavors! There is no stopping Executive Chef Justin Romine from coming up with retro foods that are turned inside out and given a few outrageous new ingredients!

THE BACKSTORY

New York Lifestyles met Sean Christie, CEO of Carver Road Hospitality, the parent company of  Rosevale Kitchen, and learned how its vibe and menu were created. Christie has a long career in hospitality having held positions as President of Events and Nightlife for MGM Resorts International and also Executive Vice President of Business Development for Wynn Resorts. He says he “spearheaded the development of multiple food and beverage concepts for both companies.”

He revealed to  NYL, “The partnership with Civilian Hotel was born with Jason Pomeranc seeing the need for moreaspirational food and beverage concepts. David Rockwell’s involvement was also a big draw. With  Rosevale Kitchen & Cocktail Room we can curate experiences from cocktail hour through dinner and into late night.”

AN ECLECTIC CLIENTELE

Christie categorizes his clientele to include theatergoers, those from the neighborhood and other parts of the city, and outof-towners who visit thanks to good word of mouth. “We’ve had a great crowd of theatergoers, neighborhood residents, and tourists and have hosted a few celebrities, including Gayle King.”

RK  also has plenty of artisanal beverages made with local liquors that they serve exclusively; some imported spirits that are obscure but flavorful, homemade syrups, and exotic fruit. But, of course, it goes without saying that what comes out of the RK bar is as creative as what comes out of the kitchen. Says Christie, “Rosevale Kitchen incorporates global influences into classic fare utilizing locally sourced ingredients. For example, our celebrated  Steak Tartare is infused with Thai chili and lime, and the  Orange Duck features Pho spices. The menu is designed to transform staple items into crave-able ones. We also incorporate seasonal ingredients and fresh produce for the spring and summer seasons.”

FOOD & DRINK

BRICK CHICKEN TO BRISKET BURGERS

What dishes does Christie feel are the strongest, and what would he order if he was a first-time guest? “Our signature brisket blend,  Rosevale Burger is one of  Rosevale Kitchen’s most popular items,” he states. “The  Brick Chicken and Meatloaf with the tableside mashed potatoes presentation also ranks among the must-have items. In addition, our menu offers a variety of shareable plates, appetizers, hearty entrees, and desserts.  Rosevale Kitchen is a great option for theatergoers before or after a show.”

What is on the menu at  Rosevale? Christie enthuses, “This spring, Rosevale will unveil its anticipated garden space. Chef Justin Romine is working on updating the menu with a few seasonal dishes for spring and summer.  Rosevale Kitchen will offer brunch later in the summer on Saturday and Sunday.  Rosevale Cocktail Room is preparing to introduce a world-class Vermouth program curated by master mixologist Francesco Lafranconi, Carver Road Hospitality’s VP of Beverage & Hospitality Culture. The Irish coffee at Rosevale Cocktail Room, located on the second floor of the Civilian Hotel, is a tableside show in and of itself.”

DECADENT DESSERTS

Speaking of coffee, the Illy cappuccino served at  Rosevale Kitchen is off the charts. It’s strong without bitterness, and it’s possibly the best cup of coffee in Midtown West! Tea connoisseurs will appreciate that Dammann Freres Tea is served (it first got popularized by the Neiman Marcus holiday catalog). Be sure to team your caffeine with one or more of the fantastic desserts that RK has to offer. There is a rotating selection from week to week, but they are all house-made and unique. The  Brown Butter Blondie with Macadamia Nuts is unforgettable. The  Cheesecake Panna Cotta packs a significant wow factor because the Cassis Gelee on the bottom of the dish is oh-so-fresh tasting and slightly tangy. Finally, the Chocolate Lava Cake is made outrageously differently than anywhere else—it’s a Sansho ganachefilled cake with candied kumquats and puffed rice.

There’s something for everyone at  Rosevale Kitchen, whether they are difficult to please or care more about having cocktails than eating! The staff is not only super friendly, and always check to see if diners need to “make a curtain.” The little courtesies like this and an outstanding menu make Rosevale Kitchen a “rising star”!

SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE

PETER AVERY: DIRECTOR OF THEATER, NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Iwant to shine a spotlight on the thousands of New York City school stages and the person with the starring role in that forum, Peter Avery. Avery is the Director of Theater for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), the largest public school system in the nation. To put that in perspective, the student population in NYC is larger than the combined student populations of LA, Chicago, and Houston. Avery has impacted hundreds of thousands of students and teachers and continues to advocate for theater education for all of NYC’s 1700 schools serving over one million students annually as New York City is Broadway’s backyard and home. What an opportunity to consider that our diverse public-school students will not only become future audiences but will be a source of performers and management workers for the Broadway industry.

After working in the theater and arts education world in DC for nearly ten years, Avery moved to NYC in 2000, where he led education and outreach for TADA! Youth Theater and then created Disney Theatrical Group’s first-ever Education Department for Tom Schumacher. In 2009, he jumped the fence to work inside the NYC Schools to oversee all aspects of theater education for pre-K to 12 in all 5 Boroughs. His programs strive to ensure all students develop life-long skills for the stage and beyond through opportunities to explore their creativity, learn theater techniques, and artistically collaborate with peers and professionals.

We met with Peter Avery to learn more about his love of theater.

Tell us about your position at the New York City Department Of Education.

I take my position as the Director of Theater seriously as an honor, a responsibility, and the only one of its kind in the US. Because of what we do in theater, I function as more of a “producer” creating opportunities, being aware of current trends in the theater culture, and responding to the needs of our youth and their school communities. Beyond focusing on what and how students learn through theater curriculum development and teachers, I strive to capitalize on what theater does best—produce experiential opportunities for youth and their teachers to collaborate and explore issues through creative expression.

I have been so fortunate to partner with the Shubert Foundation, whose vision for all the things theater can provide young people is truly inspiring. With their support, I have produced professional developments for teachers and school leaders, new programs for students, and community engagement efforts to welcome parents and families to experience theater with their youth. My primary focus is ensuring all youth know they have a voice and learn ways to express their literal and metaphoric voices of creativity.

What is the importance of theater in schools?

Through theater that fosters creative expression, discipline, collaboration, self-awareness, and personal transformation, students of diverse backgrounds and abilities channel their energies into creative expression and association. Students engaged in Theater Making learn to respect differing perspectives while valuing societies’ literary, oral, and cultural traditions. They learn multiple ways to express themselves, cultivate identity, and develop empathy for others’ circumstances—windows and mirrors.

Please tell us how closely you work with Broadway and why it is relevant.

I am proud of the relationships I have made with Broadway professionals and companies such that producers now reach out to me to explore engaging student audiences and create new programs related to shows. I want our youth to experience the highest level of professionalism to inspire their creativity and realize over 30,000 diverse careers in and around Broadway. Broadway has embraced our NYC schools and students in a partnership to provide unique artistic experiences as part of their education. However, they also now recognize it takes investment and fostering opportunity to ensure the following great playwrights, performers, composers, designers, and engaged audiences might blossom here in NYC. I have been so fortunate to work with many brilliant and compassionate veterans and new producers and showcase what our young people are capable of when we treat them like professionals.

What do you see in the future for theater in schools?

The future is bright as more and more educators recognize the depth and breadth of theater engaging the human condition. Theater creates windows for young people to understand and empathize with those from different backgrounds or abilities. And theater offers mirrors for our wonderfully diverse youth to see their stories told, to hear their music and languages spoken in plays and musicals.

ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY

With only an oversize shirt, black tights, and a chair, Stritch mesmerizes a full house at London’s Old Vic Theatre with tales of her 50-plus-year career on stage and screen. At Liberty is more of a monologue than a musical performance, though she does perform some of her signature songs like “Zip” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” At Liberty won a Tony Award in June 2002 for Special Theatrical Event, but Stritch’s triumph was tempered when she was not allowed to complete her acceptance speech. Her response to it here is just one of the touching moments in the remembrance of a historic career.

A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN: THE MUSICAL

The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. From Broadway to your screen, you’re invited to share an evening with the woman and her influences in A Night With Janis Joplin. Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby,” and “Summertime,” a remarkable cast and breakout performances, A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends.

ROSE

In this compelling one-woman play, British theater legend Dame Maureen Lipman reprises her award-winning performance as Rose, a woman whose tumultuous journey through anarchic times takes her from the devastation of Nazi-occupied Europe to the allure of the American dream. Through the life of one woman, it tells the story of a century when everything changed except the violence of the strong against the weak. This production of Rose is available to stream worldwide.

A DOLL’S HOUSE

Based on the life of Laura Kieler, a close friend of playwright Henrik Ibsen’s, and first performed in 1879, A Doll’s House was initially met with controversy over how it criticized nineteenth-century marital norms and advanced little-known feminist ideas. Ibsen’s play confronts the problems with an exclusively male society and a woman’s place. Nora Helmer commits fraud to obtain the money to save her husband’s life. Throughout the play, her dealings are discovered, and she ends up making an enormous life decision that goes against the societal grain.

ANN

ANN is a no-holds-barred portrait of Ann Richards, the legendary governor of Texas. This inspiring and hilarious play brings us face-to-face with a complex, colorful, and captivating character more prominent than the state from which she hailed.

Written and performed by Emmy® Award-winner Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), ANN takes a revealing look at the dynamic woman who enriched the lives of her followers, friends, and family.

CREED III

PG-13

ON THE BIG SCREEN

SPRING SEQUELS

Michael Jordan is following in Sylvester Stallone’s footsteps, both as a character that continues the Rocky film franchise and now, with Creed III, as a film director. It’s his first outing as a director in this sequel to the first two films of the same name. Jordan also stars once again as the titular boxing phenomenon and this time Jonathan Majors joins the cast as a friend turned rival.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES

Not yet rated

It’s hard to believe that the D&D game came out 1974 and captured a generation’s imagination. But it’s still so popular that this cinematic reboot of the game’s film franchise returns this month, with big stars like Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant. and Regé-Jean Page leading the charge into a new fantasy world. This one centers around a search for a lost relic that is worth untold fortunes.

JOHN WICK:

CHAPTER 4

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is the John Wick motto, as Keanu Reeves just keeps on coming with this fourth installment of his popular hitman cinematic series. As usual, his assassin persona is strong as he travels across the globe getting into huge fights and (naturally) winning them all. There’s a plot, but for fans of Keanu doing action, who really cares what it is?

SCREAM VI

Not yet rated

The Scream franchise moves to New York City in this latest installment of the scary story begun way back in 1994. You’d think someone would have stopped Ghostface by now, but no one has, so the gory slasher saga continues. This time out Courteney Cox is back in her original role, along with newer franchise stars Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, Melissa Barrera and more who also return for one more fight.

SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS

PG-13

This is one sequel we’re ready for, as Zachary Levi is back in his red tights, as our favorite funny superhero. Shazam: Fury of the Gods takes our hero into a world filled with ancient gods, including one played by Helen Mirren and another by Lucy Liu, which just says “FUN” all over it. DC Comics has struggled to get its movie house in order, but the Shazam! franchise is a bright star in the DC Universe and tons of fun for the whole family.

COMIC HIJINKS

HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART TWO

Hulu

Mel Brooks just keeps on ticking, as the 96-year-old funnyman brings the next chapter of History of the World to the small screen as a series. He’s writing and producing the eight-episode season that wanders through history as it drops on four consecutive nights. He’s got an allstar cast in the mix, including Wanda Sykes, Ike Barenholtz, Nick Kroll, Johnny Knoxville, David Duchovny, Seth Rogen, and lots of other very funny people

LUCKY HANK

AMC

This dark comedy stars Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) as a grumpy college English professor whose middle-age crisis is playing out as bright young things swirl around him, hoping to learn something besides what puts him into such a bad mood. Mireille Enos plays his easygoing wife, who’s a high school vice principal, and Oscar Nunez, Diedrich Bader and Kyle MacLachlan give this dramady its comic edge.

TRUE LIES CBS

It’s been about 30 years since James Cameron brought True Lies to the big screen, but he’s pretty sure people still love the premise. That’s why he’s a producer on this TV-series reboot starring Steve Howey (Shameless) as the international spy and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk) as his wife, who has no idea her boring husband is a superspy. Hijinks and action ensue once she finds out and joins him in his secret-agent way of life.

MUSICAL MISCHIEF

DAISY JONES & THE SIX

Can Riley Keough sing as well as her famous grandfather (Elvis Presley)? Tune in to find out as she leads the band in this series based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The series moves from past to present, as the band (including actors Sam Clafin, Suki Waterhouse, Sebastian Chacon, Josh Whitehouse and Will Harrison) rises to the heights and disbands. Word is that this is loosely based on Fleetwood Mac; there’s even an album created for this fictional band.

UP HERE

Hulu

The musical pedigree of Up Here includes Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who composed Coco, Frozen and many more, as well as Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hanson scribe), so fans of their style may just love this series about a couple whose romantic tribulations make them want to sing (and sometimes cry, too). Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes star as the couple whose New York City romantic experience is full of catchy tunes.

CATWALK FURBABY

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR FOUR-LEGGED COMPANIONS

Elysian, an international luxury lifestyle brand founded by Karen Floyd and created to inspire and reflect the interests of women, held the Inaugural CatWalk FurBaby fundraiser at Sony Hall to launch New York Fashion Week 2023, hosted by Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin. The evening before, Elysian hosted a fashion fete at New York’s Lafayette 148 on Madison Avenue, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Bissell Pet Foundation.

Elysian Founder and CEO Karen Floyd conceived CatWalk FurBaby to bring together creative powerhouses, women change-makers, and animal welfare organizations to make the world better for our furry companions under the auspices of ELYSIAN Impact, the brand’s philanthropic arm.

WALKING THE RUNWAY

CatWalk FurBaby paired designers, models, rescue animals, and charities together for a morning of passion with a purpose. Ten models—wearing fashions designed by designers (several of whom are members of SohoMuse), including Marc Bouwer, Malan Breton, Karen Caldwell, Anne Fontaine, Gloria Lee, Merci Dupre, Nicole Miller, Noize Apparel, Victor de Souza and Brook Wilder—each graced the runway with a four-legged companion. A panel of celebrity judges headed by Fern Mallis with Carol Alt and Karen Abercrombie handed out awards to animal welfare organizations paired with each model-and-pet team.

The ten animal welfare organizations represented on the runway were Operation Kindness (Texas), Friends of Williamson County Animal Shelter (Tennessee), Jameson Humane (California), Danny & Ron’s Rescue (South Carolina and Florida), Big Dog Ranch Rescue (Florida), Freedom Dogs (Ohio/California), Strong Island Animal Rescue League (New York), Global Strays (New York/ International), Animal Advocates of Barnwell County (South Carolina), and Companion Animal Alliance (Louisiana). In addition, puppy models for the show were provided by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (New York) and the Spartanburg Humane Society (South Carolina).

60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2023 PET SPOTLIGHT

AND THE WINNER IS…

The Inaugural Awards presented: The Judge’s Choice: Global Strays (Designer: Gloria Lee), People’s Choice: Big Dog Ranch Rescue (Designer: Anne Fontaine), and Publishers Choice: Danny & Ron’s Rescue (Designer: Marc Bouwer).

· Global Strays has a worldwide mission to reduce the suffering of animals in impoverished regions through funding animal shelters and bringing services directly into communities to increase well-being.

· Big Dog Ranch Rescue  has, since its founding in 2008, saved over 50,000 dogs with its mission to save 5,000 dogs every year, to heal and place them with loving families, and to educate them about proper care.

· Danny & Ron’s Rescue was founded after the 2005 Hurricane Katrina to aid dogs that were left homeless by the storm and has grown to rescue puppy mill dogs, bait dogs, and shelter dogs.

“This is the first time fashion, animals, and charity have been brought together in New York Fashion Week,” ELYSIAN Founder Karen Floyd said. “To do it in a way that will benefit the lives of countless pets adds a layer of meaning that will not soon be forgotten.”

Cathy Bissell, the founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, said, “Our nation’s animal shelters are facing unprecedented overcrowding due to inflation, housing restrictions, and a decrease in adoptions. BISSELL Pet Foundation is grateful to be the beneficiary charity of Catwalk FurBaby to make a difference for homeless pets in ten animal welfare organizations across the country. By supporting CatWalk FurBaby, participants will help deserving pets receive much-needed second chances through this one-of-a-kind event.”

Notable Attendees at the Inaugural CatWalk Furbaby included; Karen Floyd, Dr. Christina Rahm, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Fern Mallis, Carol Alt, Karen Abercrombie, Alvita King, Lt. Gov. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER

MIKAIL AKAR, YOUNG ARTIST

Young artist Mikail Akar is making waves at just ten years old in the art world. The tween creator is already a bona fide painter with works found worldwide and showcased in numerous exhibitions around the globe. His colorful work appeals to contemporary art lovers as the prodigy draws his inspiration from historical figures, including Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Gerhard Richter.

Mikail’s paintings are collected internationally among art collectors and celebrities alike. Already making a significant mark on the international press circuit, he has appeared on Fox News, BBC News, Yahoo, and the pages of the New York Post

Born in 2012 in Cologne, his career began relatively carefree. For his fourth birthday, his parents gave him a small canvas and finger paints simply because they didn’t want to repurchase Legos or toy cars. As a result, Mikail began his prolific artistic journey at this exact moment.

ENTER THE ART WORLD

His talents were seen in the first painting, and his parents encouraged him to continue his work. Watching YouTube videos with Mikail, he learned specific painting techniques, and the little artist soon began to paint nonstop. His introduction into the art world launched shortly after, with adult artists wanting to preview his work more and more.

His father, Kerem, expresses, “You must be behind the kids instead of in front of them.” Mikail had his first exhibition at the age of four in August 2017 at the SBK in Cologne Longerich. Then, at age five, he exhibited his paintings in the Kunstbruder gallery in Cologne. The third exhibition was then in September 2018 at the Galleria Palatina in Großkarlbach. The next stop was October 2018 at the Art Haus in Düsseldorf.”

Further exhibitions followed in Hamburg and Jüchen. Later, his works were displayed at the Landtag NRW and Bankhaus August Lenz in Berlin. As a visual artist, he does not want to limit himself to canvases; he recently painted a wreckage part of the Airbus 310. (approximately 5’ by 7’). It has already been exhibited at Cologne/Bonn Airport and will be shown in other international airports.

In 2020, during the lockdown, when all events were canceled and postponed, Mikail launched his virtual exhibition My World is Colorful to create an opportunity for art enthusiasts to admire his artworks from afar.

Mikail had already created several exhibitions in Germany; international art collectors soon became aware of the little artist. This led to other shows in Vienna, Istanbul, and New York City. Mikail has his studio in Cologne, where he regularly paints.

HELPING OTHERS

The young artist also has a philanthropic side and has gained considerable attention, with his work being auctioned for good causes, such as the Art Helps to Give campaign. He has also painted numerous times with German celebrities such as the Höhnern, Laith Al-Deen, Manuel Neuer, and Peter Mafay.

Despite his exciting life, Mikail has remained a typical child; he goes to school in Cologne and is fully supported by his parents and two siblings. For more information on Mikail Akar, visit mikailakar.de

MY NEW YORK STORY

STEVE MORNELLI, THE WAGGLE FOUNDATION

The Waggle Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded four-plus years ago by New York City businessman Steven Mornelli. This online crowdfunding platform is dedicated to saving canines and felines from the tragic—unthinkable—fate of owner-requested euthanasia, a fancy term for putting down an animal when a despairing pet guardian is forced to choose between paying the rent or paying Fido’s veterinary bill. This is an untenable situation.

Mornelli felt economic euthanasia, as it is also called, was unacceptable and that the overwhelming problem—nearly a million pets in shelters/ rescues alone are put down annually—needed a solution. He knew he could do something to take a bite out of that staggering statistic, and he did.

Recently,  New York Lifestyles  sat down with Mornelli to learn what’s worth barking about at his Waggle Foundation.

Tell us a little about your background.

I was never in the pet industry. I initially worked as a mechanical engineer, transitioning into data sciences and finance, but I did not find it emotionally fulfilling. Then, during the financial meltdown, I had time to think of how I could make a difference by doing something meaningful, leveraging my knowledge of data and analytics. So, when I conceived Waggle, I had not even known the term economic euthanasia.

So how did you make the leap to create an online, nonprofit resource?

I love animals and have always had a pet. I saw the need to help people in dire, heart-wrenching situations. I understood the power of crowdfunding platforms—they are the go-between, connecting two sides of an equation. But I felt donors needed to know  exactly where their money was going, so I created a transparent, secure, and trustworthy model.

How did you do your research?

Boots on the ground! I talked to veterinarians, visited many animal hospitals, and networked feverishly with professionals in animal welfare organizations. I looked at many crowdfunding sites so I could design the best software capable of cutting red tape.

Please explain how Waggle works. Can anyone post a campaign?

Yes, both individuals and rescues/shelters can post; many veterinarians send their patients to Waggle when they have clients who cannot afford treatment. It is free to post, and we help with instructions and guidance. We work with over 600 shelters and more than 1,000 veterinary hospitals, and those numbers are growing. In the beginning, we got about 30 campaigns a month, and now we get hundreds. Payment of the funds raised for any animal goes directly to the treating veterinarian, never to the family. It is crucial to our mission to be transparent

You mentioned that Waggle is a nonprofit foundation, so does Waggle ever help fund animal campaigns?

Yes, our Waggle FurEver Fund can nudge a campaign along to completion. We have a secret weapon you won’t find elsewhere— countless animal welfare organizations, such as country music superstar Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation, are our partners. Those organizations also help with matching funds, which can kickstart or top-off a campaign. We are proud to say we have helped raise over 2 million dollars, and we have many donors who give a regular monthly contribution—as little as $10—that is any nonprofit’s lifeblood. Similarly, many individuals have started their funds on Waggle.

How has Waggle grown since you started?

We had a software development team and three Waggle freelancers when we began. Now we are 15 people! We have helped thousands of pets get that second chance they deserve, keeping families together. Our team is the back office, but the ever-growing number of donors makes the miracles happen. We have also built out our board with seminal industry leaders who believe in our mission, including Nicholas Nelson, the president of the highly esteemed BluePearl veterinary hospital group.

What is in the future for Waggle?

We keep the lights on using the standard surcharge for contributions—10 percent on top of the donated amount, but 3 percent of that goes to the credit card companies. Later this year, we’ll be adding e-commerce, affording donors more philanthropic opportunities: So, if a contributor wants to buy dog food, say, for a rescue organization, we can be the facilitator, which will help us to continue to stay on a firm footing.

QUADRILLE BALL

The 62nd Annual Quadrille Ball, a white-tie charity event, is one of the annual highlights of the New York ball season and was held at 583 Park Avenue in New York City. The annual Ball is a fundraiser for scholarships awarded to highly qualified American and German undergraduate and graduate students, including Ph.D. candidates. The Quadrille was founded more than 60 years ago to enhance and strengthen transatlantic relationships through education. Through its non-profit parent organization, the Germanistic Society of America, Inc., the Quadrille supports undergraduate, master, and Ph.D. students.

Recipients are chosen with the cooperation of three highly regarded organizations: Columbia University, the International Institute of Education, and the Fulbright Commission. The graduate students successfully concluded the Fulbright scholarship application process before being chosen by the Quadrille. Over the years, the Quadrille Scholarship Fund has supported some 700 students from the U.S. and Germany.

The Quadrille Ball takes its name from a dance popular in the 18th Century called “Quadrille.” It is a formal dance in a square formation. The Quadrille dance is rehearsed and performed by young professionals volunteering their time on the recommendation of alums, patrons, and friends.

In addition, every year, a highly regarded representative of the business or transatlantic community is invited to serve as a Guest of Honor. This year Dr. Steven E. Sokol, President of the American Council on Germany, followed in the footsteps of other Guests of Honor, including Dr. Josef Ackermann, Chairman of the Management Board and the Group Executive Committee of Deutsche Bank; Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of Meyer Werft GmbH; Dr. Brigitte Mohn, Member of the Supervisory Board of Bertelsmann AG and Member of the Executive Board of Bertelsmann Foundation; Prof. Dr. Andreas Barner, Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors of Boehringer Ingelheim, Martina Hund-Mejean, CFO of Mastercard; and, most recently, Mr. Uffe Ostergaard, President, Hapag-Lloyd (America) LLC.

Notable attendees at the Quadrille Ball included Dr. Steven E. Sokol, Raban Freiherr von Arnim, Allison Ecung Freifrau von Arnim, the Consul General of the Republic of Germany, David Gill and his wife Sheila Shrivastava and the Consul General of the Republic of Austria, Helene Steinhäusl and her husband Hubert Heiss, Andrea Ostheimer, Executive Director, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, New York, Dr. Barbara Elling, President, Germanistic Society of America.
