ith the holidays fast approaching and pivoting being the new norm, I’ll let you in on a conversation I had the other day with a close friend who is also my art director. He stressed not to get caught up in a doom and gloom letter about how the pandemic’s effects will put a damper on this holiday’s atmosphere because there’s so much of that out there already. I’m taking his good advice and acting upon it. So, to all the media covering stories like Santa is skipping Macy’s for the first time in 159 years or there will be no Miracle on 34th Street this year, I’m going a different route by way of the North Pole to show that the Christmas Spirit is not only alive and kicking but more evident and stronger than ever. Let’s always remember NYC is hands down the absolute best magical place to be during the holidays. Some of the easiest and traditional thoughts that instinctively come to mind are the twinkling of lights and one-of-a-kind displays in the department store windows, the seasonal smell of roasted chestnuts on every street corner, or even a romantic horse and carriage ride under a warm winter blanket with your loved one on a crisp winter night through the famous paths of Central Park. And surprisingly enough, the Winter Village in Bryant Park is open for ice skating while jamming to some holiday tunes. Afterward, grab a cup of hot chocolate and do some shopping throughout the village for that perfect impulse buy you didn’t realize you needed. This year, some of us will be taking a less traditional path to enjoy the Holiday Spirit. Sharing in ways that will have a huge impact on someone else’s life will make a difference. Volunteer your time. It’s a perfect opportunity to share your extra time off with fellow New Yorkers in need. Some organizations like City Harvest and Meals on Wheels are looking to ramp up on additional food rescue operators. Another direct way is through donating, and I’m not speaking about money. I’m talking about simple things that could have a huge impact on an adult or child such as a coat you haven’t worn for years that is just hanging in a closet and could be donated to the 2020 Coat Drive. Maybe even an extra blanket you don’t use which will keep someone else warm. This act of kindness is in each of us and what Christmas Spirit is all about. When all of that’s done, here’s a hint on how to relax and enjoy the warmth of the season you feel. Go to On Demand on your cable box, search the words “Yule Log,” and you will find hours of holiday music playing as your TV screen transforms into a crackling fireplace. Then sit back, put your feet up, and grab a cup of hot chocolate, or even a glass of scotch and relax. I’m telling you from experience. It’s perfect. I look forward to next year and sharing new ideas and topics with you in the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles magazines. Have a Healthy and Happy Holiday. P.S: I just want to wish my wonderful wife a Happy Anniversary and say thanks for a great 18 years and many more.

JACQUES LEIBERMAN A CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST By Patricia Canole Photography by Neil Tandy | Hair & Makeup by John Edington for Angelo David Salon
acques Lieberman’s brilliantly hued artworks are unique and have won him a huge and appreciative audience from the artistic world. However, it was not the easy journey for this incredible talent. A Jewish refugee from Antwerp, Belgium, Jacques escaped to several countries before landing in Brooklyn in 1959, where he enrolled in school to study architecture. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 15
16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
He later moved to Manhattan and continued his painting. His works were well-received. With this success he quit his job to become a full-time artist and gallery manager. Then, in 1988, the revolutionary Adobe Photoshop was introduced. Jacques quickly realized he could use the same color palettes and geometric design capabilities to create colorful art in a fraction of the time it took him to create a painting. His prints caught the attention of many art lovers. In fact, Jacques is one of the first artists to usher in the digital age of art. Today, Jacques Lieberman enjoys his career successes with his wife Maribel (of MarieBelle Chocolates) and his daughter Angelina. New York Lifestyles sat down with the artist to learn more about his fascinating life and what he sees for the future. Tell us about your childhood years in war-torn Europe and your move to Israel. I was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and quickly became a young Jewish refugee of the Second World War. My parents fled to Puisserguier, France, in 1940. Soon after, when the Nazis invaded, my parents decided to send me away with an underground network of French people hiding and protecting Jewish refugees throughout the country. At the age of six, I kissed my family goodbye. It was the last time I would ever see them. I spent the war years with a French Protestant family who hid me. After the war ended, I moved to Switzerland, where I reunited with cousins and other relatives from France. After four years, I moved to a Kibbutz in Israel. Yet another move. This time to New York City, where you call home. What were your first impressions when you first arrived? After ten years in Israel, I came to New York to study architecture and design at Pratt Institute. My interest in art grew, and I heard that many artists established their studios in Soho; therefore, I wanted to see what it was all about. Soho was where I opened my first gallery and has been my home ever since. I still believe that Soho is one of the most artistic neighborhoods in New York City. What were your earliest memories and your exposure to the arts? When I was hiding in France, my family, who adopted me, gifted me a box of colored pencils. Gifts were not common in the household, so I was static about this gift. Every day I would sketch drawings that expressed the fear I felt. The drawings were my only outlet; my parents were gone, I was alone, hiding, wishing I could live a normal life. Art was the one thing I could hold onto after everything was taken away from me. Everywhere I went, I held my box of colored pencils. When my daughter turned five years old, I gifted her a box of the same colored pencils, passing on my passion for art.
Was there one person who influenced you the most? Victor Vasarely was my biggest influence. He taught me that art did not have to be representational but rather abstract and contemporary. His use of geometric shapes was fascinating and impacted the Op Art movement. I identified with his art, and I would do anything to go back in time and thank him for inspiring me into the artist I am today. When is your favorite time to create art? When I first began painting, I would wake up at 5 am and start creating colorful shapes on huge canvases. It was the best way to start my morning. When Apple introduced the Macintosh, I was one of the first artists to use that computer with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter to create art. I was addicted to it; I would work 18 hours a day, starting at 2 am. Once I even worked for 24 hours straight. Art is the best way to start the morning. How would you describe your art? My art doesn’t represent anything other than itself. I can’t even describe my art or replicate it. Every piece is unique. That’s why I love it. Today, artists are going down other avenues to showcase their works— including exhibiting at hotels, restaurants, and other venues. Have you ever considered this? What’s interesting is until now, I have never promoted my art. Art is my passion and creating always came before selling. The fact that people want to see my art is incredibly heartwarming because I create art for people to love and be happy when they see it. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 17
18 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
I am fascinated with geometric shapes, and painting allows me to create shapes of all sizes and colors. Tell us more about today’s art scene in NYC? Most art galleries moved from Soho to Chelsea; many young artists are extremely talented and make me excited for the next generation of artists in New York City. Although many galleries have moved, I still believe Soho is as artistic as it was in the ‘80s and ‘90s. What are your inspirations/reference points for creating art? I adore shapes of all colors and sizes. With my background in architecture, I have learned about lines and how specific shapes complement each other. I love creating abstract art that doesn’t have a deeper meaning. Have you ever considered working in different media? Architecture has always been a passion of mine. I would love to work with sculpting and create abstract work. What is it that draws you personally to painting? I am fascinated with geometric shapes, and painting allows me to create shapes of all sizes and colors. If I make a mistake, I can paint over it and create a new shape. The possibilities are endless! What is your ideal studio setup? Is it small and confined? Or an airy loft-like situation? My ideal studio setup is a large New York City loft, with huge windows—there needs to be light. All I need is a desk and a computer, no furniture, I need a space where ideas can flow.
JACQUES UPCLOSE You don’t leave home without… My pug, Willow. Favorite Museum? The Cooper Hewitt Museum. Drink of Choice? MarieBelle Dark Hot Chocolate. Favorite way to relax? Create art. Favorite getaway? East Hampton. What book are you reading now? Presently I’m writing my own biography.
What projects are you presently working on? I am working on my own collection of silk and wool rugs handmade by village artists in Katmandu. The collection will depict my works of art. I am excited about this project. Not only am I using a different medium but it is a team effort with artists from Katmandu who have made the thread from scratch dye to fabricate the rug. I am also doing a collaboration of my art with MarieBelle Chocolates. My art will not only look beautiful on chocolate, but one will be able to taste it! Your wife, Maribel, of MarieBelle Chocolates is the famed chocolatier with her signature artistic designs. Does your daughter, Angelina, show any artistic endeavors? Art is an extremely important trait in our household. My daughter Angelina is an incredibly talented and dedicated pianist with over 11 years of experience. It is a family tradition to paint together once a week. It connects our family, especially in these uncertain times. I am blessed to have a wife and daughter who are both extremely talented and love the arts. OTTOMANELLI & SONS A CUT ABOVE THE REST
By Patricia Canole Photography by Neil Tandy | Hair & Makeup by John Edington for Angelo David Salon
hen knowing New Yorkers think of Ottomanelli meats, their first thought after that is quality. As one of the last professional butchers in the city, it is how they sell steaks, lamb and wild game that sets Ottomanelli apart from other meat purveyors. “Old school to the bone,” is how third-generation owner Frank Ottomanelli describes the business, when the first Ottomanelli began selling cured meats from a pushcart at the turn of the last century.
Tatiana Ottomanelli (daughter), Frank Ottomanelli

Tatiana Ottomanelli (daughter), Frank Ottomanelli, Mary Ottomanelli (mother), Francine Kunkel (sister)
The year was 1900 when Gennaro Ottomanelli arrived in America from Bari, Italy, and soon began selling cured meats from a pushcart in the West Village. At a time when pushcarts lined the streets and were typical sources for New Yorkers to obtain food, Gennaro’s hard work paid off. With the success of his growing business, Gennaro and his family often went back to his birthplace to visit. On one of those trips from Italy to New York, Onofrio Ottomanelli was born in 1917. When he was three, his parents traveled back to Italy, where he grew to learn skills that would remain with him for the rest of his life. “It was my grandmother who taught him the skills needed to butcher,” Frank told us. With his honed skills and determination in hand, Onofrio returned to New York in 1937, taking a job at his uncle’s butcher shop in Yorkville. In the 1940s Onofrio opened O. Ottomanelli & Sons at 238 Bleecker Street. That location was perfect; twenty years later, he relocated a few doors down to the store’s present-day address. Eventually, a Yorkville store would take on the Ottomanelli name and go by Ottomanelli Brothers. Then came S. Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meats in Woodside, Queens. While “all in the family,” the businesses remain amicably separate. Onofrio distinguished himself from other local butchers and along with his brothers, provided both quality meats and game as well as superior personal service. One of those brothers, a young Salvatore, often delivered orders regularly to customers throughout Manhattan. One such delivery was to playwright Arthur Miller, who at the time was living on 57th Street. One day, a gorgeous blonde appeared at the door. Salvatore later found out it was Marilyn Monroe. Onofrio and his wife had eight children, with four of the sons later working at the Bleecker Street store until his death twenty years ago. Like any good father, he taught his sons well. Frank remembers how his father, Salvatore, would instruct “how to scrape meat from the bones.” But it was not easy. He was young, and Frank remembers his father trying to encourage his son to learn the trade. To accomplish this, Salvatore persuaded his young son with a stop at the donut shop to sweeten the deal. It worked!
The Ottomanelli name has survived as they have sliced and diced their way through lean times, eras of excess, the rise and fall of dietary whims… THE TRADITION CONTINUES
Frank credits Onofrio with being ahead of his time in many respects. The market was the first to offer fresh game. At the time when his grandfather introduced buffalo meat to New Yorkers, some fifty years ago, the New York Daily News reported on this new food sensation. Today, Ottomanelli’s offers not only wild game, but exotic meats, including alligator, kangaroo, elk, and even python. “One day, a loyal customer came in looking for rattlesnake for his Thanksgiving dinner table,” Frank recalled. No request is ever too much, he added. The customer placed his order and left happy. Like his father, Frank only buys hanging meat—never boxed. A typical day starts early in the early morning—4:30 am is not unheard of—to fulfill orders and visit wholesale meat markets in Brooklyn and the Bronx. “I’m dealing with some of the same vendors that my father dealt with in the 1940s,” said Frank. “We’ve been doing it so long and have relationships going back four and five generations. That means that we get to select the best quality.”
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 23
Not surprisingly, S. Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meats—as with all Ottomanelli markets—is a great place to get advice on which cuts to buy and how to cook them. For example, if burgers are on your menu, they will suggest a blend of meats for you, and will grind it on the spot. If you are planning a stew, they’ll suggest the perfect meat to purchase. The Ottomanelli name has survived as they have sliced and diced their way through lean times, eras of excess, the rise and fall of dietary whims like the soy-loving ’70s and present-day Keto diets. All things are taken in stride with unflustered, steady hands. Frank said his partnerships with small farmers result in a customer who can choose from a conscientious delight of lamb, veal, and pork, as well as free-range birds. In essence, it’s an art that bridges the wide gap between the animal in the field and the kitchen. Today, a fourth-generation is blooming. Earlier this year, Frank suffered a bout with COVID-19 and was unable to work. Faced with this dilemma and the possibility of laying off his employees during the pandemic, his 21-year-old daughter, Tatiana, stepped up and saved the day. “She was amazing at the way she coordinated and managed the market to remain open so effortlessly,” said Frank. That included the market continuing to service many New Yorkers who have been waiting the pandemic out on the East End of Long Island, with delivery all the way to Montauk. “It’s good to know the Ottomanelli tradition will continue.”
Frank says that his grandfather was ahead of his time in many respects. The market was the first to offer fresh game when no one else did. THE DIGITAL AGE
“Right now, people are thinking about their health. They want premium quality all-natural meats that are antibiotic-free, steroid-free, and growthhormone free,” said Frank. “I am making it easy for New Yorkers who are concerned about going into a shop right now to access that. “Go online and order a prime-aged porterhouse steak—or any specialty item—and you’ll always receive Ottomanelli’s signature custom service right up to delivery to your door. Your meat will be fresh cut and delivered same day by an Ottomanelli driver. That’s why when you buy an Ottomanelli steak, you’re buying a taste of New York history.” For more information on S. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2020 By Griffin Miller
he season of good cheer is finally is upon us and I can’t help but feel the song “We Need a Little Christmas” (from the musical Mame) is all kinds of 2020 poignant, especially the lyrics, “And We Need a Little Snappy/Happy Ever After/Need a Little Christmas Now.” So grab some eggnog and join me as I run holiday amok, starting with Hanukkah on December 10th. Christmas (I think you know this one by heart), and Kwanzaa on the 26th. And while we’re on the subject of partridges in pear trees and dreidels spinning their way to chocolate coins, let’s remember to binge on favorite holiday flicks, embrace the warmth of family and good friends, shop for amazing presents (just turn the page to get started), and ring in a most Happy Ever After New Year! FOR HER SCENT FROM ITALY Jasmine Leather, Eau D’Italie’s latest fragrance arrives on the holiday scene accompanied by a fascinating history dating back to the Florentine Renaissance. Evidently, back then it was customary to scent gloves, vests, and other leather items. Topping the list of essences was Jasmine, found to pair bewitchingly with leather. Today, notes of elemi, saffron, patchouli and cedar ensure Jasmine Leather will be one of the season’s most coveted new fragrances! Info: beautyfrontier.com.
STYLE WISE Bangs with their own frizz agenda set me on the path to find a flat iron that would keep them from going rogue, but when I let my hair grow I wanted a tool that could also curl. NuMe’s Megastar Hair Straightener has lived up to its multi-thumbs up reputation on both counts, as well with such added tame-and-shine goodies as infrared heat and an ion booster. That said, all that’s left is to ask yourself: “Who wouldn’t want stellar hair?” Selfie time is now! Info: numehair.com.

ANGELO DAVID SALON REVOLUTIONIZES THE BEAUTY BUSINESS By Ann Grenier
hen people come to Angelo David Salon, they can expect to leave with hair they never thought possible. As owner and creative director of Angelo David Salon and one of New York City’s leading authorities on fine and thinning hair, Angelo David Pisacreta is not just a hair illusionist; he is the Vera Wang of couture hair. In 2000, David launched Angelo David Couture Hair Additions™, the world’s finest customized hair solutions that include wigs, hairpieces, extensions, volumizing toppers, clip-on bangs, and ponytails. This, in combination with his specialized hair care products and supplements, is a game-changer in the hair industry—and for women and men who are dealing with hair loss and thinning hair. Treating fine and thinning hair has now become the standard in the hair salon and hair care industry. There are many reasons why hair may begin to thin or fall out, and through 25 years of hands-on experience with people from all walks of life, Angelo has seen it all. Angelo and his team create personalized wigs, toppers, extensions, and fillers that help his clients regain their confidence by giving them the hair they used to have or the hair that they’ve always wanted. Upon arrival, clients a provided a private consultation to understand their concerns and situation. Once a plan is set, a sample of the client’s hair is taken. The 100 percent human hair additions are then designed and tailored to match the clients’ own hair texture, color, shape, and responsiveness. This way, the hair reacts the same way as their natural hair would, from how it naturally dries when wet to how it responds to heat and styling. When clients see themselves in the mirror for the first time with their new hair, the reaction is often emotional. “It’s the main reason why I do what I do,” says Angelo, “We don’t just change people’s hair here. We change people’s lives.”
BEAUTY FROM WITHIN Angelo’s experience with hair loss and hair thinning led him to develop Angelo created Hair Detox® Hair Revival Supplement, a hair and lifestyle supplement that addresses stress and inflammation of the body—two things that trigger hair loss or thinning hair. Hair Detox® is based on the latest science and research on the nutrients and herbs such as keratin, biotin, vitamin B6 and selenium that address these contributors to thinning hair and hair loss. Hair Detox ® gently detoxifies the body, helps minimize nutritional deficiencies, addresses hormonal imbalances, and supports healthy hair growth from within to reveal fuller, thicker hair. Many of Angelo’s clients swear by Hair Detox® because it works from the inside out to address the root cause of their thinning hair problem.

Angelo is also the creator of The Flex Brush™— the ultimate detangling brush for wet and dry hair that safely detangles hair, massages the scalp, and promotes health and hair growth. The brush’s versatility combined with its flex technology—as recently featured in Good Housekeeping’s Best Beauty Awards 2019 Top-Tested Stylers—make it the most forgiving hairbrush on the market. The Flex Brush™ bends to follow the contours of your head, massaging your scalp and stimulating the production of natural oils. The brush has vents that allow heat to pass through it so that blow drying won’t damage the brush. Located on Madison Avenue, Angelo David Salon boasts a team of highly trained staff members dedicated to making each client feel welcome and appreciated. The full-service salon offers—in addition to thinning hair solutions—the best in cut, color, color correction, and styling. Angelo’s vast experience with hair, hair health, and hair growth led him to realize that hair health issues often begin inside the body, not on the surface. TECH TALK
SNOWSPORTS GO HIGH-TECH By Will Reed
kiing and snowboarding are expensive undertakings. There is the travel, the clothing, lift tickets, and the obligatory ski-school lessons. Given the cost incurred, there is a natural desire to master the sport, perform well and look good instead of gingerly moving about or being extracted from a snow mound. Thankfully, technology can enhance our precious time on the slopes. Here are a few essentials to really get the most out of your ski/snowboarding this winter. PHOOZY SLOPES OAKLEY Cell Phone Protection You’ve finally nailed a ski weekend and you want to send that selfie, or a group photo— only to find your cell phone has been drained of battery life by the cold. The Phoozy pouch is designed using NASA spacesuit technology and has a unique thermal barrier that protects the cell phone from extreme cold or heat— without affecting its cellular, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi functionality. Phoozy comes in a range of sizes for major phone makers and tablet versions. Info: phoozy.com.
Location Is Everything Get a major boost to your ski and snowboard experience by downloading the Slopes app for iOS and Android cell phones. Once Slopes knows where you are, you press record and get out there; it will tell where you are and detects ski lifts and runs. The premium version adds more stats and 3-D maps to replay your experience. Info: getslopes.com.
Seeing Is Believing Beyond it being too bright on occasion requiring eye protection, that is the only use for eyewear. Wrong. Oakley Prizm Eyewear is a proprietary lens technology specially designed to enhance both color and contrast to provide the wearer with more detail. On the snowboard and ski slopes, this means that these lenses can help you make out the conditions a little more easily and make better decisions as to the route to take. Try the Oakley Flight Deck Goggles with Prizm Persimmon for a high definition visual skiing experience. Info: oakley.com.
SMITH VANTAGE
CARV
BEARTOOTH
Safety First The latest technological development for your head’s safety in the event of a collision is the MIPS liner. Designed to twist with your head inside the helmet in the event of accident versus older helmets, which do not give in on impact, making this a critical safety consideration. The Smith Vantage helmet also keeps your head cool with some 21 vents and their special honeycomb aerocore construction, aiming to improve energy absorption in the event of an impact. Info: smithoptics.com.
Your Own Digital Instructor Ski lessons are expensive. Private lessons, even more so, and the feedback can be very qualitative in nature. Try Carv— sole inserts for your ski boots and a sensor tracker placed outside of each boot to measure how you distribute your weight with 96 pressure points and your movement with accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer—in short, a lot of data! Combine that with a state-of-theart phone app, and you start getting direct feedback on your performance in realtime. Time to learn and ski like a pro. Info: getcarv.com.
Your Own Private Network Is cell reception poor on the slopes? Too many others trying to reach one another and overwhelming a remote cell tower? Here’s Beartooth, which consists of a pack of two transmitters that you sync with your phone to create a private network for you and other Beartooth users—even in the absence of a cell phone network. Not only can you speak with one another, but you can also text, share maps, and location. Very handy in the backcountry. Info: beartooth.com. •

GURNEY’S MONTAUK
THIS YEAR-ROUND RESORT OFFERS A QUIET WINTER RESPITE By Stacey Zable
stay at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa in Montauk, N.Y. is a relaxing one any time of year. Spread across 20 acres with a 2,000-foot private beach, the 146-room property is its own luxury getaway located literally at the end of Long Island. A four-season resort, Gurney’s may be the perfect drive-to getaway this holiday season for New Yorkers seeking a change of view. The resort and the town itself are quieter during its off-peak season, enabling guests to unplug. The highlight of Gurney’s Montauk’s seasonal offerings is its Igloo pop-ups available Oct. 15, 2020 through March 31, 2021, on the property’s East Deck. The heated igloos overlook the ocean and boast custom décor, music, specialty cocktails, and menu items based on a theme. This year’s igloo themes include “Haunted Igloos of Hither Hills” available through November. This spooky theme focuses on a couple that checked into Gurney’s over one hundred years ago but never checked out. “The Big Chill ‘80s Igloos,” available December through March, take guests back to the famed era. Guests are encouraged to wear their scrunchies, leg warmers, and neon puffer jackets to get in the ‘80s vibe. The igloos can be reserved for up to four people (they normally hold eight) for two-hour increments. Reservations are staggered to allow for a disinfection process between each reservation in which the igloos are disinfected with M.I.S.T Fogger & Disinfecting Solution. There is a $25 per adult charitable donation fee that supports East Hampton Meals on Wheels, The Retreat, Project Most, and Concerned Citizens of Montauk.

DINING UNDER THE STARS A few of the igloos will also be dedicated to Scarpetta on the Beach dining. A meal at the famed Italian restaurant, whether in the igloo or in reduced capacity indoors available at press time, is an event. Menu choices include the seared scallop appetizer and handmade melt-in-your-mouth pasta dishes like the short rib & bone marrow agnolotti. End your meal with the hazelnut or caramel gelato on their own or paired with the Valrhona chocolate cake. Breakfast is currently being offered at Scarpetta and excites with its own selection of delicious choices, including an abundant fresh fruit platter, omelets, and a crab cake eggs benedict that will keep you so full you might skip lunch. For a casual take on a meal that rewards with a water view, Gurney’s Fire Pit outdoor lounge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean offers cocktails and a light bite and seasonal favorite menu. The hotel is also offering in-room dining choices where guests can enjoy their meals on their private outdoor patio or in-room table and chairs (both available in the majority of rooms). Guest room types include standard, deluxe, and superior one- or two-bedroom Ocean View Rooms and Suites, Oceanfront Rooms and Suites and one, two, three, and deluxe bedroom cottages. The menu will feature a whole roasted turkey carved tableside with stuffing and other seasonal favorites such as cranberries, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. The hotel will also be offering the service for Christmas dinners.
WELLNESS COMES FIRST On-property activities beyond dining include long walks on the wide, white-sand beach. Guests can start their days with daily complimentary wellness classes on the beach (unless there is inclement weather) such as yoga, Pilates, beach bootcamp, and stretching classes. The town of Montauk is just a little over two miles away. (See sidebar.) Looking ahead to spring 2021, Gurney’s Seawater Spa, currently being completely renovated, is slated to reopen. Its healing treatments and ocean-fed seawater pool, which the resort says is the only pool of its kind in North America. For more information on Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, visit gurneysresortslcom/montauk. •
EXPLORING MONTAUK During the off-season in Montauk, the typical summer crowds are gone, but the town’s infrastructure and natural beauty remain to be explored. The Atlantic Ocean and the wide, white-sand beach that goes on for miles welcomes all those who visit. Stores and many restaurants are open for business. Another way to take in the beach year-round is as part of a private or group guided horseback beach ride available from Deep Hollow Ranch, said to be the oldest cattle ranch in the U.S. Info: deephollowranch.com. A must-see local attraction is the Montauk Lighthouse National Historic Landmark, located at the furthest tip of Long Island and the oldest lighthouse in New York State, dating back to 1796. The iconic attraction’s museum, located in the 1860 Keepers’ house, will be open through Thanksgiving weekend. The museum displays historical documents, photographs, and an exhibit of whaling industry artifacts from the 19th century. The museum’s gift shop for holiday presents and the grounds will remain open on a limited schedule, weather permitting through Christmas. Unfortunately, according to a spokesman at the lighthouse, the lighthouse will not be holding its annual festive lighting due to COVID-19 this holiday season. The 110-foot, 6 inch-Lighthouse Tower also remains closed. Info: montauklighthouse.com.

THE PEACOCK INN By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
ombining a history dating back to the early days of this nation together with a dedication to providing modern, luxurious accommodations and upscale fine dining, The Peacock Inn has established itself as an iconic landmark in downtown Princeton, NJ. The only luxury boutique hotel and fine dining restaurant in this university town, The Peacock Inn, has garnered a long list of accolades and an impressive guest list that includes members of the Continental Congress, Albert Einstein, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
HOTEL HISTORY The inn’s history begins in the 1770s when Jonathan Deare purchased the property from Thomas Stockton and offered fellow members of the Continental Congress rooms with fireplaces and breakfast, tea, and dinner. In 1911 the peacock, a symbol of royalty, good food, and good luck, was adopted as the hotel’s emblem. It is believed that the basement of the Inn, also known as “Peacock Alley,” served as a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Evidence of such was discovered in 2006 during a 3-year renovation when original drawings by jazz age artist John Held, Jr. were found. These drawings, etched on the basement’s cement walls, are now framed and hanging on the dining room walls. The 16-room inn is part of the Ascend Hotel Collection and has earned the AAA Four-Diamond Award four years in a row, including the AAA Inspector’s Best of 2020. The entire inn has been completely updated with a clean, contemporary design. The rooms are bright with abundant natural light and decorated with a pleasing mix of neutral and muted earth tones. In addition to high-end bedding and luxury amenities, the bathrooms feature a glass-enclosed rain shower and radiant-heated floors. 40 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

EXQUISITE DINING Following a four-month closure due to the pandemic, the Inn’s fine dining restaurant reopened with a reimagined concept. Ownership empowered new Executive Chef Alex Van Dyke to change the restaurant’s approach from its traditional Classic French menu to one inspired by Chef Van Dyke’s personal touch. His first move was to rename the restaurant The Perch at Peacock Inn. Although reluctant to pigeonhole his style, the unassuming chef referred to his cuisine as New-Age American. The chef ’s creative use of fresh produce and thoughtfullysourced ingredients, acquired from personal relationships with local farmers—people he greatly admires for their resistance to industrialized farming—revealed tastes to us, unlike anything we have experienced. You might begin your dining experience with the Little Gem Salad of Romaine leaves with smoked Gouda, Tomato Jam, Rye Crumble, and a light touch of Buttermilk dressing. Or select the newly-added Lancaster Valley Beef Tartare with foraged Wild Ramps, Oakwood Shiitake Mushrooms, and Embered Tallow Aioli. Next, we suggest one of the chef ’s signature dishes. We loved the New Jersey Line-Caught Black Bass with Eckerton Hill Sungold Tomato, Grilled Cucumber, Escaillo Peppers, Bronze Fennel, and Toasted Hemp Seeds. Or perhaps go for the Heritage Pork Loin with Hakurei Turnips, Crunchy Brown Butter Groats, Apple Blossom, and Bee Pollen Mustard. Indoor dining takes place in one of three dining rooms or the downstairs Peacock Alley for special occasions. Weather permitting, outdoor dining is available on the front porch and patio or in the serene back yard, all of which are beautifully landscaped. The cocktail bar is chic and comfortable and offers a tempting list of classic and signature cocktails. The crafting of the Smoked Old Fashioned is an event, and the Blossom Fleck, made with top-quality gin, St. Germaine, and Champagne, with a float of edible flowers, is intriguing. The Peacock Inn also presents a full-service Afternoon Tea (currently just on weekends), featuring a wide array of sweets, savories, fine teas, and an optional Champagne flight. You might also consider the inn’s Dine and Stay Package, available for November and December. Details can be found on the website.
EXPLORING PRINCETON Be sure to take the time to explore the town of Princeton. Palmer Square is a just short walk from the Inn and features an assortment of high-end retail stores, boutiques, specialty shops, and dining venues. Info: palmersquare.com. Across the street from the Square is Princeton University. There are historic/ significant buildings such as Nassau Hall, University Chapel, University Art Museum, Cleveland Tower, and the Fitz Randolph Observatory and the beautiful grounds and architecture. History buffs may be interested in the Morven Museum and Garden, a former governor’s mansion, and historic site. Or explore Princeton Battlefield State Park, a pretty park featuring walking trails, the Clark House, and a few monuments dedicated to Princeton›s Battle, where George Washington engaged the British. When you build up an appetite from walking the town, stop in at the casual dining venue, Proof, serving specialty pizzas, salads, and veggies made with fresh seasonal ingredients and high-quality meats. Try the Salad Pie—a White Pizza with ricotta, arugula, tomato, red pepper, basil, shaved grana, and 20-year-old balsamic or the Soppressata & Roasted Onion Pie with Castelvetrano olives. Info: proofpizzeria.com. Treat yourself to a specialty coffee and French pastry at Chez Alice Patisserie, a longtime staple in Princeton. The café serves breakfast and lunch items, but it is their custom cakes, decadent individual pastries, and colorful macarons that will catch your eye. Info: chezalicecafe.com.

TRAVEL
THE ULTIMATE HOLIDAY ESCAPE
TURKS AND CAICOS WELCOMES AMERICANS By Jenny Peters
fter over half a year of staying home during the coronavirus crisis, it may just finally be time for you and yours to grab your masks, pack up the sanitizing wipes and take the plunge with a much-needed escape during the 2020 holiday season. Ushering out this strange year will be a relief for all of us and doing it in the sublime Caribbean country of Turks and Caicos will make it that much sweeter. This multiple-island paradise has been open to U.S. visitors since July, with COVID-19 precautions firmly in place. To plan a winter getaway, you’ll need to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within five days before traveling (kids under 10 are exempt from this) and complete a travel pre-authorization form online. On arrival at Providenciales International Airport (PLS), expect a health screening with temperature checks.
WHY TURKS AND CAICOS?
Taking what may be the first trip since the pandemic began is a big decision, which is why Turks and Caicos—and specifically the country’s main island of Providenciales—should be your top choice of sun-drenched escapes. Grace Bay Beach is the justifiably world-renowned centerpiece of the country, a crescent of powdery white sand that leads to the clearest, blue-green waters you’ve ever seen. Mix in the incredibly friendly “Belongers,” as the native people of Turks and Caicos are known, a colorful local scene filled with arts and crafts, music, seafood (especially every Thursday at the Island Fish Fry), and every water adventure known to man, and the result is a wonderful blend of island life. With nonstop flights from JFK and Newark airports to PLS, the trip should be stress-free; Turks and Caicos is located about 500 miles southeast of Miami and 300 miles north of the island of Hispaniola, in a pristine area of the Caribbean Sea. Known for its stunning scuba diving, snorkeling, and world-class deep-sea fishing, the waters around this heavenly place are filled with undersea wonders.
Beaches Turks & Caicos Italian Village
WHERE TO STAY As avid divers, on our most recent visit to Providenciales, we chose the all-inclusive, family-friendly Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort located on a long stretch of Grace Bay for one good reason. Unlike many other resorts in well-known scuba diving destinations that charge hefty fees for diving, certified divers at Beaches find everything included. Tanks, diving equipment, stateof-the-art boats, and incredibly knowledgeable dive masters are all a part of the one-price policy here. That the Beaches dive team is one of PADI’s top five dive operations in the Western Hemisphere is no surprise, as their organization is impressive. Novice divers can learn to “get wet” via a resort course or with actual PADI certification (do your course work at home and then complete your certification with open-water dives once you arrive); beginners go out on separate boats from certified divers, allowing thedive instructors to focus on each diver’s level of skill.
Beaches Turks & Caicos Pirates Island Waterpark
The warm water, incredibly clear visibility, and a wide range of dive sites—including the Hole in the Wall, a breathtaking deep dive that features a singleperson swim through a narrow hole in the coral that exits to a massive wall where reef sharks glide sleekly past—are incredible. All the dives in the waters near Beaches offer up sea turtles, schools of barracuda, eagle rays, lobsters, and other fascinating denizens of the deep. If you’re lucky, a school of playful dolphins will surround your boat, happily racing alongside and laughing as they surface. We were obsessed with spending every day under the sea with oxygen tanks on our backs, but we discovered that the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort had almost too much to do when not in the water. Kids have a riotous time here, with the on-site Pirates Island Waterpark, complete with huge waterslides, lazy river rides, andswim-up soda bars, or at the Beaches Caribbean Adventure with Sesame Street, filled with full days of fun with Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, Elmo, Rosita, The Count, and more.
Beaches Turks & Caicos Key West Beachfront Butler Villa
Adults who aren’t diving all day find a cornucopia of things to do, ranging from sipping frozen drinks while lounging on a beach chair or indulging in soothing spa treatments all the way to paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, playing beach volleyball, tennis, or even croquet. Golfing is an off-property possibility, as is shopping, casino gambling, deep-sea fishing, and sightseeing tours. Beaches has 21 international restaurants that reflect the different villages that make up the resort—Italian, French, Caribbean, Seaside, and Key West—and drinks are included. It’s truly a self-contained home away from home. Beaches has implemented a comprehensive COVID-19 hygiene practice, giving cleaning and sanitation even more emphasis than ordinarily. The resort follows a strict cleanliness protocol to ensure personal safety from rooms to pools to sports equipment. The resort reopens on November 18, 2020, just in time to join them in kicking 2020 right to the curb. AROUND TOWN
VIEWS FROM CENTRAL PARK SOUTH By Lisa Maysonet
t is a glittering boulevard slicing elegantly through the heart and history of New York. Central Park South. The name alone evokes Manhattan, the speed and sophistication that has launched a thousand movies. It begins at one of the Earth’s most storied buildings: The Plaza Hotel, a limestone landmark whose guest list of names includes Jacqueline Onassis and John Lennon, Greta Garbo, and Elizabeth Taylor. To stroll along its sidewalk is to gaze on classic apartment buildings and hotels that define pre-war splendor. Admire the Renaissance Revival New York Athletic Club, legendary home to both Olympic athletes and the city’s elite. And finally, as horses and buggies clamor by, you reach the end at the historic intersection called Columbus Circle. The traffic circle, located at Eighth Avenue and Central Park West, Broadway, and 59th Street and Central Park South, was designed as part of Frederick Law Olmsted’s 1857 vision for Central Park, including a rotary on the southwest corner of the park. It abuts the Merchant’s Gate, one of the park’s eighteen major gates.

But as the name suggests, Central Park South is the magnificent border of Central Park itself, New York’s vast forest. With ancient trees and even more ancient rock formations, and a landscape of lakes and gardens, paths and bridges that stretch as far as the imagination. It has been called “the granddaddy of America’s naturally landscaped parks,” according to the AIA Guide to New York City. Thus, Central Park South is as much a thoroughfare of dreams as a street. Charm meets exquisite taste. The exhilaration of an international destination meets the pulse of a never-ending city. At sidewalk cafes and sumptuous restaurants, in opulent stores and the waters of the Plaza Fountain, and where F. Scott Fitzgerald and wife Zelda drank Champagne and laughed during the roaring twenties. People watch people on what may be the most cosmopolitan street in the world’s most cosmopolitan city.

IN A CLASS BY ITSELF LUXE LIVING IN CONNECTICUT By Harry Brads
he sprawling 152-acre country escape comes courtesy of David Wildenstein, whose family controls the Wildenstein Institute, the world’s foremost art organization and Lucrezia Buccellati, the scion and co-creative director of the renowned Buccellati jewelry brand. A marriage of rustic American tranquility and Italian luxury, the property is located just 80 minutes from Manhattan at 1 Glenn Brook Farm Road in Sherman, a quiet town in Fairfield County, where neighbors include boldfaced names Diane Von Furstenberg, Bob Iger, Jeffrey Toobin, and Rob Zombie.
LUXE + CHIC “Wildenstein and Buccellati are associated with fine art and the most exquisite jewelry, things that are beautiful, ultra-luxurious and chic,” says lifestyle and realty expert Loy Carlos, Co-founder and Creative Director of Classiques Modernes. “David and Lucrezia are also true nature lovers who wanted to create a forward-looking agricultural estate for production of eco-friendly, renewable crops like hemp and medicinal plants. It’s a different kind of luxury lifestyle that is both mindful and principled, and very much aligned with who they are.” “Lucrezia and I wanted to build a home where we could enjoy the serenity of the woods, a return to quiet nature,” says Wildenstein. “She loves horses, and I enjoy farming. We were growing hemp, for example, to explore its use as a viable alternative for wood to use in construction, to help combat global warming. We are very much into organic farming as well. Sherman feels like a countryside within five minutes of suburban amenities and recreational facilities that are also essential to a growing family like ours.” The estate is one of just five properties in the area boasting more than 50 acres. Built with easy expansion in mind, the 7000-square-foot, open loftstyle mansion features vaulted cathedral ceilings, six bedrooms, and seven marble baths. Indoor amenities include a recreation room, home theater, double-height living room, gourmet kitchen with custom walnut millwork, Miele appliances, and a Grand Terrace, overlooking the bucolic grounds. For the owners, the terrace was an important consideration. “Lucrezia very much wanted the house to feel open and the outdoors to be a part of our everyday living. It is something we enjoy whenever we are in Italy and the type of lifestyle she is accustomed to,” explains Wildenstein.
A BUCOLIC SETTING “You appreciate the owners’ sophisticated tastes,” says Kenneth J. Moore, President of Classiques Modernes International Realty, representing the listing. “Walking through the house, you get a sense that each part was carefully crafted. Each window perfectly frames the mountain views, trees, and fields, like living portraits.” Moore notes that the owners have plans for an indoor and outdoor pool which will also be available to prospective purchasers. Carlos concludes, “Rustic materials like wood, stone, and steel plus gigantic pivoting glass doors that open onto the upper and lower terraces result in a successful melding of the great American country lodge with a clean, modern European aesthetic.” Surrounded by land trusts on three sides, the land is comprised of 25 acres of fields and 127 acres of woods, an 11-horse barn, as well as two scenic ponds and staff quarters. Because there are no conservation easements, the estate is ideal for agricultural and equine use, or even as a serene corporate retreat. “This is the first-time prospective buyers have been able to come and walk through this stunning country getaway,” says Moore. “It’s a one-of-a-kind property, which can no longer be found in other luxury markets, offered at a truly unbeatable price.” Asking price: $7.9 million. REAL ESTATE INVESTING LEARNING FROM THE BEST By Esther Reizes-Lowenbein
recently had the privilege of talking to two mega real estate investors. It was enlightening to hear about their motives for taking on real estate investing, their journey, and present-day status. Rod Khlief and Brian Burke are two of the top investors in today’s market, both brilliantminded and kind, generous souls. ROD KHLEIF Rod began investing in single-family homes at the age of 18. Years passed, and after acquiring 500 rental homes he lost them, and approximately 70 percent of his portfolio, adding up to 50 million dollars in the 2009 crash. He reemerged to realize that multi-family investments were safer, more stable, and cash-flowing assets. Rod attained a luxurious living and while relaxing one day just two months after moving into his magnificent mansion, realized he was depressed. He soon discovered that true happiness emanates from giving to others less fortunate. Rod explained that focusing on what he wanted and envisioned got him through difficult times. He believes that one can flow through any crisis with the proper mindset. As a follower of Tony Robbins, Rod lives with a sense of gratefulness, a strong focus on his goals, with a room adorned with positive affirmations. Today, with well over two thousand multi-family units, managed by a third party, under his belt, Rod gives back to the community by teaching what he knows to the next person; he runs a large Facebook group, hosts meet-ups, and teaches in his online classes. Rod also attributes his success to his outgoing personality, coupled with his CPA partner and the ability to figure out systems. His success is evident in his office room decorated with thank you notes from so many that have been fortunate to learn from Rod.

BRIAN BURKE Brian is a veteran real estate investor with over 30 years of experience. He has dealt with every class asset, including self-storage, single-family housing, hospitality, etc. He cannot imagine doing anything else, as this is his niche. In 1989, he began acquiring foreclosed homes until 2004. He laid low and decreased his purchases. The 2009 crash was the greatest blessing for Brian, as he had not invested too much. Brian started without a dime but with much determination and hard work to succeed. He encountered many setbacks along the way. It is only recently that he has seen his hard work pay off, and people are reaching out to him instead of him reaching out to others. This is a credit to his good track record and the great relationships he has built. He now has over 50 employees and property managers and has raised over $100 million from investors. Brain relates that he was in law enforcement for many years while investing in real estate on the side. One day he announced to his law enforcement buddies that he would be presenting a talk about investing in a space he had rented out. He had spoken about creating a pool fund for single-family homes with a split of 50-50. At the end of the night, he had walked out with $500,000 from 28 investors. Some of those investors are still with him today. He usually gains investors through word of mouth and speaking engagements. His book The Hands-Off Investor explains who to invest with, how to invest, and how to protect oneself. Navigating real estate investing is like a sea that meanders through a meadow; one ought to follow the current and successfully navigate the market cycles. Brian Burke
Brian enjoys traveling, especially to Hawaii, going to concerts and flying his private plane. •

HEALTH & WELLNESS
WINTER WELLNESS MYTHS SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION By Melanie Carden
inter wellness. It’s more than embracing your great-grandmother’s fervent wisdom. In the age of information-access and self-advocacy, you are empowered to elevate your wintertime well-being. Staying active is always a priority—even when there’s a chill in the air. But you also want to avoid the colds and flu the season is notorious for and enjoy the delights—snowy nights, cozy frocks, and warming cocktails. But are those cocktails actually “warming” you up? There is an endless list of winter-isms we often swear by—but which are myth versus scientific certainties?
COLD AIR MAKES YOU SICK We all know the scene in the movie A Christmas Story. The mom bundles up the little boy in an absurd ensemble of anti-shiver attire—so thick the poor kid can’t bend his scrawny, bird-like arms. Though it’s certainly important to stay warm, cold air—on its own—does not make you sick. In fact, the cells that fend off infection are more active in cold weather, according to Dr. Rachel C. Vreeman, coauthor of several health-myths themed books. Many in the medical community suggest the cause of those pesky winter colds is not the frosty air itself but the reduced humidity, which compromises the mucus membranes. Other scientists propose an even simpler explanation: we’re indoors more and in closer proximity to one another, which hastens the virus’s spread. So, bundle up, get outside for your winter walks to boost those infection-fighting cells, and…wash your hands often.
BODY HEAT IS LOST THROUGH YOUR HEAD An old wives’ tale? Nope, we can credit a 1950 military study for this evergreen advice. The accuracy of these findings has since been called into question. The study sent volunteers to the Arctic— dressed in top-of-the-line survival gear…everything except for hats. No hats, folks. The heat had nowhere to go—but up and out. Similarly, if you head outside in frigid winter conditions dressed head to toe in warm clothes—except gloves—well, you’ll lose most of your body heat through your hands. A poorly designed study that has become the cold weather rally cry of our loving mothers and grandmas is not without merit, though. We don’t need a military smarty-pants or a chicken soup-making matriarch to embrace common sense: if you want to be warm this winter—dress appropriately.
DRINKING ALCOHOL WARMS YOU UP Hot buttered rum, mulled wine, and whirls of whiskey in our coffee! Yes! to warming winter cocktails, right? But alas, alcohol is up to its old tricks again. It certainly makes you feel all warm and toasty, but only because it makes the blood rush to the skin’s surface—and away from the vital organs. Your core body temperature drops as a result. What’s more, the tasty trickster prevents you from shivering—so you perceive this as “being warmer.” Unfortunately, shivering is your body’s way of generating additional heat—ultimately making you scientifically colder. YOU CAN GET THE FLU FROM THE VACCINE Among the winter myths, this one is the easiest to debunk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are quite clear: you cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine. According to the CDC, some people may experience common side effects from flu shots, including soreness, redness, tenderness, or swelling where the shot was given; some may suffer a lowgrade fever, headache, and muscle aches. Because these side effects overlap with flu symptoms, people sometimes interpret these reactions as actual influenza. It’s imperative to remember, though, according to the CDC, that the flu is a serious health risk. Though mild reactions occur from time to time, it’s important to get the vaccine each year because flu viruses are constantly changing, so the vaccine composition is updated. Kickstart your winter wellness with the flu vaccine and protect yourself from the unforeseen!
LESS SUNSHINE CAUSES WINTER DEPRESSION Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that has been in the spotlight the last few years—deservedly so. According to Harvard University, “Experts don’t fully understand the cause of SAD, but leading theories place the blame on an out-of-sync body clock or improper levels of either the hormone melatonin or the neurotransmitter serotonin.” The disorder rears its ugly head in autumn or winter—when the daylight hours dwindle. The good news is that SAD impacts only about 1 to 2 percent of the population, and so if you’re feeling a bit in a funk, it could be due to other seasonal challenges. Ask yourself if you’ve been active enough, are you stressed about the cost of holiday shopping, or exhausted from festive obligations? Diet can also play a role—cheesy casseroles and heavy comfort foods can leave us feeling lethargic. And those warming winter cocktails? Well, a measure of moderation may help to keep the winter woes at arm’s length. But if you’re feeling blue and wonder if you are experiencing SAD—chat with your doctor. The mainstay of SAD treatment, as outlined by Harvard, is light therapy, also called phototherapy, which can be readily incorporated into your winter routine!
VITAMIN C PREVENTS COLDS We end on a myth that is still largely debated! In the early 1960s, Noble Prize Winner Linus Pauling, a chemist, began touting the immune benefits of large doses of vitamin C. The idea took off like wildfire (again, we love you, mom! We love you granny!), but megadoses have since come into question. Dr. Marvin Lipman (Endocrinologist and Consumers Union’s Chief Medical Advisor) asserts that there’s very little evidence available showing that vitamin C in megadoses is beneficial. In fact, he and famed professor and cookbook author Dr. Andrew Weil agree with more recent research that indicates tissues of the human body “can’t use more than 200 milligrams a day.” It is generally suggested that RDA (recommended dietary allowance) be set to 75 milligrams for women and 90 milligrams for men. Both Lipman and Weil agree we could benefit from an increase to 200 milligrams each day—but this is a far cry from the 1,000+ milligram megadoses we often read about to prevent or “cure” a cold or flu. So, is vitamin C crucial to your immune and overall health? Absolutely. But the idea of megadosing has come under scrutiny. But guess what? If you want to take a high-dose vitamin C supplement when you feel a cold coming on, you’re not alone. Dr. Weil says he does it too! In the end, when you feel the sniffles and want to “C” your way clear of a cold—take Weil’s advice and do what works best for you! • NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 57

WISDOM FOR THE AGES A NEW ALTERNATIVE DESIGNED JUST FOR MIDLIFERS By Bailey Beckett
K, boomer.” It’s a phrase that makes the Modern Midlifer scream. Though a gentle insult—coined by a millennial, no less—it’s a not-so-subtle reminder that the pecking order has changed. Youth is in, age and experience are out. And marketers continue to chase the elusive younger demographic, who are increasingly marginalized as tired, old, and ready to call it a day. Just not today or anytime soon if Denis Keane and Tom Lamb have anything to say. The long-time friends, Modern Midlifers themselves had no intention of slowing down, and they bet people in their same age group didn’t either. They are living longer, healthier, and enjoying their lives like never before. They still work, keep busy social schedules, travel, and represent 70 percent of U.S. spending power. This makes them the perfect target for a new brand Keane and Lamb envisioned for the age group. Wisdom Essentials, derived from the “wisdom” the founders have amassed in their lives, is a line of CBD-based products focused on the mind, body, and spirit. The brand includes three oils, a balm, and gumdrops infused with nutraceuticals, nootropics, and other elements, which provide a natural alternative to prescriptions and other dubious remedies. They are also creating a virtual community, including website, blog, and Podcast for their audience. “Our intention is to use natural and plant-based ingredients to create supplements that help our customers feel their best in the pursuit of what’s next,” says Lamb. New York Lifestyles talked to the two Modern Midlife’s to get the scoop on their new brand. Why do Modern Midlifers need Wisdom Essentials? Denis: We’re a special group in our society who are actively pursuing our next opportunities. Whether it’s continued learning, starting a new business, or starting a new career, we are curious, have an open mind, are active and social, and pursuing the purpose in what’s next. We’ve decided we are not stopping or simply falling into the old trope of sedentary “retirement.” What was the inspiration for starting this? Denis: We were motivated by a couple of strong inspirations. We both looked at how the medical community looked to prescribe opioids and other pharma products and thought there was another way to feel better naturally without the effects and dangers of potentially addictive drugs. We saw our good friend die way too early from drug and alcohol addiction and hoped we could find another way. Tom: Denis’s cholesterol was through the roof and was motivated to find another treatment beyond the statins he was taking. His doctor recommended he get off this poison. 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
Soothe Bottles
What kind of products are you introducing? Denis: We are starting with five physician-formulated products with CBD enhanced with nutraceuticals, nootropics, and other natural elements to help overall well-being for the whole person: Mind, Body, and Spirit. They include three oils, balm, and gumdrops. Do you find there is a stigma attached to CBD products? Tom: There is a lot of confusion and uncertainty in the market, although CBD’s adoption is steadily rising. Among the key issues are the difference between CBD and THC; psychoactivity; FDA rulings on CBD; vague government direction; and bad actors making unfounded claims and selling low-quality products. We intend to be transparent in communication, educate our customers, provide the highest possible quality products, and be a market leader. Why have people migrated to CBD in the last few years? Denis: The literature about CBD effectiveness continues to grow. More people are looking for natural, non-psychoactive options to feel better. CBD is effective. Tom: Although more research and clinical trials are needed, Modern Midlifers are starting to see the opportunity that CBD and other nutraceuticals and nootropics can do for them.
Wake Up Wind Down
How did you come up with the name? Denis: We looked at ourselves and our market of Modern Midlifers, and the name came right to us. What do we have in common from a lifetime of raising our families, running our businesses, learning, successes—and yes, failures and scares? Wisdom. Tom: What better way to celebrate and support Modern Midlifers but to acknowledge the wisdom they have acquired and the wisdom they now get to share by giving back? What are people looking for in health/wellness products? Tom: More and more, from our own experience and talking with people, people are looking for ways to feel better naturally without the bad effects and possible addiction to prescription drugs. There is also a realization that big pharma is a business, and their job is to get us on their drugs. People are becoming aware that plant-based medicine is a viable, if not better alternative. In fact, we continually heard that people just felt plain lousy and stopped taking their medications and dealing with pain and discomfort. Denis Keane and Tom Lamb
Denis: The trend to plant-based in everything is a direct outcome of people looking for natural, less obtrusive ways to feel better, eat better, and be better.
Do you think this year with COVID-19/economy/election has affected people’s health? Denis: Well, the news is clearly stating that anxiety and mental health are a key issue this year. We are not psychologists, but we support people getting the help they need both mentally and physically. Many people find that CBD may help them feel calmer and less anxious, which is needed now more than ever.
Wisdom Calm
How is Wisdom Essentials different than other brands? Tom: We are not simply another CBD company—our products are natural and are enhanced with natural elements, terpene blends, nutraceuticals, and nootropic. As we see it, we are the only (or one of the only) brands that are looking to help Modern Midlifers specifically. Beyond our products, we are intent on developing a network of other support: social, physical, financial to treat the whole person: Mind, Body, and Spirit. DR. ROY DAVIDOVITCH THIS ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON HAS PUT NYU LANGONE’S HIP CENTER ON THE MAP By Bailey Beckett
r. Roy Davidovitch would rather talk about his work, his patients, and his research projects than himself. Modest and carefully spoken, he is among the top orthopedic surgeons in New York, specializing in all things hip… literally. But as the founder of NYU Langone’s Hip Center and now as the director of the New York Hip Institute in Midtown Manhattan staying under the radar is not exactly feasible. Davidovitch treats patients from around the country, including professional athletes and dancers—young and old—and is known to innovate new methods and technologies, even a customized operating table, that helps people get back on their feet and live pain free lives. In fact, the surgeon sees and does just about everything involving the hips, from sports injuries to salvaging hips that are affected by pediatric conditions such as hip dysplasia (shallow hip sockets), as well as replacing hips that are crippled by arthritis. Using minimally invasive techniques for hip replacement, his patients are often able to leave the hospital the same day. A graduate of University of Chicago, where he received his MD, Davidovitch did his residency at NYU’s Hospital for Joint Diseases (now the Langone Orthopedic Hospital) and further training at Harvard’s Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship before returning to NYU Langone to establish his nationally renowned hip practice. New York Lifestyles sat down with Davidovitch to learn more about the field, advances in OR, preventive measures and why the COVID shut down brought more people into his operating room. What would you say is your niche/specialty? Is there something you do no one else does? I am one of a few surgeons nationally who deals exclusively with conditions that affect the hip. I look at my practice as a continuum of care from hip preservation to hip replacement. From a procedure perspective, my niche is anterior approach total hip replacement and over the last five years, outpatient anterior approach total hip replacements. I have done more outpatient total hip replacements of this kind then most surgeons in the Northeast and have been fortunate enough to further innovate the procedure along the way. How prevalent is hip surgery today? It’s growing more prevalent and projected to increase even further due to demographic shifts and the fact that hip replacement surgery is now accessible to younger patients with arthritis, who in the past would hold off on surgery. Since hip implants are more durable and can last upwards of 20 years (in the past longevity of implants was closer to 10 years) and since minimally invasive procedures mean less downtime for patients who are still part of the workforce, younger patients that suffered from hip dysplasia or hip impingement which caused their hips to break down are opting for total hip replacements. What are preventative measures people can take? I encourage patients to maintain core strength through Pilates based workouts, swimming, and cycling. I discourage high impact sports such as running once they have been diagnosed with hip arthritis or labrum tears. 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
What advances have made this kind of surgery less invasive? Specialized instruments, surgical computer navigation technology, as well as durable implants along with better understanding of patient demands have pushed the innovation of less invasive techniques such as the anterior approach. What are you most excited about in terms of technology/advancement? I am most excited about the shift from inpatient hospital stays to outpatient setting for total hip replacement. With the advent of techniques such as the anterior approach to total hip replacement and with an increasing understanding of alternatives to opiates in pain management, patients are experiencing less pain and greater function immediately post op. This allows me to send about 80 percent of my patients’ home on the same day as their hip replacements. The shift of hip replacements to the outpatient center is a paradigm shift in the field. How did the COVID lock down influence/effect people needing/asking for this procedure? I have seen this go both ways. Some people became more sedentary and their hip pain decreased. However, they have noticed that their hip has become stiffer due to decreased inactivity. Once quarantine ended and they returned to more activity, patients reports spikes in pain. Other patients reported that they had minimal hip pain prior to quarantine but had now found time to exercise or spend more time outdoors and this has caused their hip pain to get worse. Interestingly, now that patients are working from home, they are interested in having total hip replacement and other such procedures especially if this can be on an outpatient basis where COVID exposure is minimized. •

THE YACHT CLUB
CITY VIEWS & AMAZING SEAFOOD ON THE WATERFRONT By Anne Raso
oliday rush got you frazzled? With all the craziness going on this year, nothing could be more welcoming than a calm culinary escape out of town! The Yacht Club, which recently took over Joe’s Crab Shack space (541 River Road in Edgewater, NJ), will make you feel like you have entered a more relaxing world. You will be amazed at the seafood (especially the Lobster Roll which rivals any served in New England), and classic American landlubber fare like the tender Marinated Skirt Steak. You will love the open-air feeling thanks to The Yacht Club’s extra-large windows overlooking the Hudson and the NYC skyline. The Yacht Club’s fare is priced reasonably, most notably the 1-1/4 lb. Lobster, which at $35 includes two sides; portions are large enough to share. There’s also the 3 lb. lobster for those seafood lovers who want the wow factor. Other stellar seafood dishes include Whole Grilled Branzino with Fresh Herbs, Flash Fried Whiting, Fried Shrimp, Grilled Faroe Islands Salmon with Quinoa Salad, Linguine with Clam Sauce, Flash Fried Sea Scallops, and a Fisherman’s Platter that includes Flash Fried Shrimp, Scallops, Filet of Sole and Calamari. The Famous Lobster Roll is arguably the most popular item on The Yacht Club’s menu.
COCKTAILS & BITES Still, others come for the remarkable specialty cocktails and to share the generous appetizers like Popcorn Shrimp, Maryland Crab Cakes, Florida Stone Crab Claws, Fried Calamari, and Mussels. Diners also love to share items from the Taco & Burgers section of the menu. Needless to say, Shrimp Tacos (with Herb Aioli) and Snapper Tacos (with Radishes, Shredded Purple Cabbage, and Chipotle) are huge hits. The waterfront resto’s sides are the ultimate comfort foods and include Corn On The Cob, Sea Salt Fries, Lobster Mac And Cheese, Homemade Coleslaw, and Sweet Potato Fries. Desserts like Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Lava Cake, New York Strawberry Cheesecake please every sweet tooth. We caught up with Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis to ask about his eatery’s clientele. “It’s locals and visitors from the city who come to the waterfront to enjoy great food and the Manhattan skyline,” he told us.
FRESH IS BEST What does the highly independent and creative Zapantis—who also helms the kitchen at the nearby Mediterranean seafood eatery Molos in Weehawken— do to stay current on new trends? “I follow my own rules. Our fresh seafood is sourced as locally as possible. As an example, we travel twice a week to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to get the best tomatoes money can buy—and I always follow my customers’ advice.” As mentioned before, the skirt steak (which comes with a heaping portion of golden fries) is amazing. We just had to get the chef ’s secrets on how he makes a skirt steak more tender than a filet mignon. “We buy Omaha grassfed beef, and there is a process. One is a 24-hour marinade and one 48, but the ingredients are a secret,” he told us. “The potatoes are high quality, and they’re extremely fresh. One secret I can reveal is that we fry our potatoes in super fresh canola oil that gets changed daily.” Even if you are one of those New Yorkers who rarely leaves the city, you’ll find yourself returning to The Yacht Club time and time again. Besides having reliable food in large portions and a Manhattan view that is second to none (especially at night), service is impeccable and speedy. You’ll find that the homey olive green and white walls, pendant lighting, wood paneling, sailboat artwork, and overall airy dining room will help you relax. Be sure to check out their $39 Sunday Lobster Feast—you get a 1¼ lb. lobster, Corn on the Cob, Potatoes, and your choice of Key Lime Pie or Crème Brulee for dessert. For more info on The Yacht Club, visit yachtclubnj.com. Reservations are recommended but not necessary. Take the NJ Transit Bus 158 at Port Authority to the River Road/Archer Street stop directly across the street from the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center; you will be a two-minute walk away from the restaurant. There is a NY Waterway ferry that goes from West 39th Street directly to an Edgewater dock from Mondays through Fridays (schedule is at nywaterway.com). •

GREAT BITES
A HOLIDAY ADVENTURE FOR THE PALATE By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
y favorite time of year has always been the holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are so many opportunities to entertain, celebrate, and spend time with the people you love. Now, you are going to have to pardon me while I fanboy for a moment. One of the reasons why I love food so much is attributed to a legend in the kitchen, The Godfather of American Cuisine, Chef Larry Forgione. My mother handled Larry’s publicity for most of my formative years, helping him to achieve the notoriety he deserved. As such, I spent a lot of time at Larry’s An American Place, often watching him and his team in the kitchen. I was always enamored by the way Larry combined flavors and ingredients to create an adventure for the palate and in what I can only describe as a symphony in the kitchen. Every Christmas, Mom would make Larry’s incredible chocolate pudding. And I have continued that tradition throughout my life. I also find myself using Larry’s pudding in other recipes that I have made. This holiday season, I wanted to share one of my new favorites that uses this recipe. When I called Larry to ask him for permission to use his pudding recipe in this new dessert, he could not have been more gracious. He even gave me some tips, just like when I was a kid, to make my new recipe work well! Thank you, Larry, for the culinary adventures throughout my upbringing and the inspiration to keep cooking throughout my life! Have a Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate during this incredibly delicious season! Here’s to a Happy and COVID-free 2021! Bon appetit!
DOUBLE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CREAM PIE Peanut Butter and chocolate are two ingredients that just scream to be together. Throw in some graham crackers and you get close to a S’mores-type dessert. However, the warm flavor from the graham cracker combined with the depth of the chocolate along the airiness of the peanut butter buttercream in this recipe makes it a great way to end a holiday meal. Enjoy! Graham Cracker Crust Ingredients 1 ½ cups of graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup of sugar 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Preparation Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Combine graham cracker crumbs and sugar in a medium bowl. Add melted butter, continuing to mix well. You want the graham cracker crumbs to appear moist. Press mix into a 9-inch pie pan. Bake until browned, 25 – 30 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Chef Larry Forgione’s Double Chocolate Pudding (bottom layer) Ingredients 2 ¼ cups milk ½ cup sugar 1 large egg 2 large egg yolks 3 tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted ¼ teaspoon salt 3 ½ ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1 ½ teaspoons dark rum 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract Preparation Combine 2 cups of the milk and ¼ cup of the sugar in a large saucepan and heat over medium-high heat until scalded. Remove from the heat and set aside.
Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Cream Pie
Place the egg and egg yolks in a medium bowl and whisk until blended. Add the remaining ¼ cup milk, ¼ cup sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, and salt, and whisk until well blended. Whisk the cocoa mixture into the scalded milk. Set over low heat and cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 4 to 6 minutes, until the mixture thickens and comes to a low boil, causing large bubbles to form. Immediately remove from the heat, add the chopped chocolate, butter, rum, and vanilla, and stir until the butter and chocolate are completely melted (the pudding will continue to thicken as it cools). Let pudding sit in pan for 15 minutes to cool. (Reprinted with permission from An American Place cookbook by author) Peanut Butter Buttercream Layer (top layer) Ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup peanut butter (best to use Peanut Butter & Co. Old Fashioned Smooth or Smooth Operator) 4 cups confectioner’s sugar ¼ cup whole milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Preparation I use a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer for this recipe, but you can also use a hand mixer. In a large bowl, vigorously beat butter, peanut butter, and confectioner’s sugar until light and fluffy. Then add milk and vanilla and mix until smooth. Building The Pie After Double Chocolate Pudding mixture has cooled, pour into pie crust (about ½ to 2/3 high). Place pie pan in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Using a spatula, spread Peanut Butter Buttercream across the top of the pie, careful to not apply too much pressure to avoid mixing the chocolate and buttercream. Top with whipped cream and a dusting of espresso or chocolate powder. •

MARIEBELLE CHOCOLATES A TASTE OF PURE LUXURY & ELEGANCE By Patricia Canole
64 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
aribel Lieberman’s passion for confections started when she was eight years old when she made candies and sold them to neighborhood children in her native Honduras. Years passed with a relocation to New York City where she enrolled in the prestigious Parsons School of Design. Here her love for fashion and design would take her on a journey in the fashion industry. But it was the creating foods that remained at her core. Maribel soon found herself running her own elegant catering business—Maribel’s Gourmet Cuisine which paved the way for her lifelong passion—chocolate. Maribel’s first foray into the world of chocolate was a New York City storefront, Lunettes et Chocolat. The shop focused on designer chocolates and glasses. Following this, Maribel’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to open her pride and joy, MarieBelle Chocolates in Soho. Her newest store can be found in The Kitano Hotel, NY. New York Lifestyles recently had the pleasure of meeting Maribel to find out what makes this incredibly talented woman create beautiful signature confections. Tell us more about how you transitioned from Lunettes et Chocolat to MarieBelle? September 11th happened but we continued with Lunettes et Chocolat. The area was horrible and certainly not a place to shop. That Christmas, I decided to take a new space, as a pop-up chocolate shop. It was an art gallery. I repainted it blue and called it MarieBelle. We opened on December 15, 2001. We’re still here. Tell us how MarieBelle distinguishes itself from other companies? I like to present all the products beautifully. Perhaps someone who likes modern design might not be comfortable here in my shop. But I think it attracts customers who feel the same way. Do you think your Honduran heritage has influenced your success? I grew up in the countryside, where cacao trees grew in the backyard. We drank cacao in hot water with sugar. When I read up on cacao’s history, I thought to myself—I need to bring back what America gave to the world. That became my passion.
Hot Cocoa
What has inspired you to add beautiful designs to the ganache? Because I come from fashion. Chocolate has three colors: white, milk, and dark. But I give it an extra twist. Although it doesn’t look like chocolate, you follow your senses—which makes me smile. Every design has a story.
MARIBEL UPCLOSE Do you think all the latest healthier eating trends have impacted the luxury chocolate industry? I continue to use everything natural. It’s not just about what you eat; it’s about how much you eat. It’s the reason I serve my hot chocolate in a tiny cup. And that’s why I serve a ganache that is just 50 calories. My hot chocolate doesn’t have a lot of sugar; it has a lot of chocolate. What is the best advice to give any aspiring entrepreneur? Ultimately what’s going to sell is if you have a passion for the product you really love. It’s a passion that’s going to get you there. There are many working hours. You might not get a salary for a long time. But persevere. It’s key. You’ve got to love what you’re doing. •
What is something we don’t know about you? I love classical music. Describe your personal style? I like elegance and classic, not necessarily trendy. What is the motto you live by? “Go for it!”

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS THESE WINES DESERVE A PLACE AT YOUR TABLE By Tina Mulqueen
his is the place where the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown in the New World,” enthuses Chris Hermann from my laptop’s Zoom window, followed by a sip of his winery’s “VGW,” an abbreviation for Very Good White.
00 VFW
Hermann is the founder of award-winning 00 Wines located in Carlton, Oregon. While Napa owns the spotlight on most domestic wine lists, Oregon wineries like 00, one of several hundred in the region, are attracting both domestic and international attention for a good reason. The cooler climates in the Willamette Valley make it ideal for growing fickle Pinot Noir grapes and Chardonnay—so much so that even Burgundian winemakers are purchasing property and cultivating grapes in its foothills. Moreover, while climate change has pushed Napa and Sonoma to higher temperatures with marked impacts on the region’s famous wines’ alcohol content and character, Oregon wines have benefited from the recent climate impact. To get a better sense of what the region has to offer, I’ve selflessly tasted my way through Oregon wine country. If you’re looking to embellish your holiday menu with exceptional domestic wines, start here.
00 WINES VGW I had the pleasure of tasting 00’s VGW, the winery’s award-winning Chardonnay blend. Floral notes and vibrant stone fruit on the nose lead to a delicate but complex honey-citrus interplay and a synchronous texture full of nuance and silky minerality. In short, it’s true to its name—Very Good. While this wine would make a fantastic pairing with an appetizer like crab cakes, it’s so good that it can stand on its own. What makes 00 Wines so special is their Burgundian production method and their meticulous attention to detail. “For years, my father and I talked about having a winery,” recounts Hermann. “We wanted to experience our environment through food and wine and to introduce people to that. It culminated in wanting to build on something exciting in the Willamette Valley, but because we spent so much time in Europe, we thought about things differently.” The family hired a French winemaker, Pierre Millemann, to combine the best of the Old and New Worlds. Millemann produces wines for the label in Burgundy and consults with the winery’s second-generation Willamette Valley winemaker, Wynne Peterson-Nedry. They use a traditional Burgundian method to tease the flavors and textures out of the skins. “We knew that the grapes that are grown are at the highest quality-level worldwide, and we wondered: what can we do with those grapes if we practice typical Burgundian winemaking techniques?” Courtesy of 00 Wines

DOMAINE SERENE “We’re big on pushing people’s boundaries,” says Ryan Harris, President of Domaine Serene. Harris credits the higher latitudes and cooler climates for drawing proprietors Grace and Ken Evenstad to make a prescient purchase of 42-acres in the Dundee Hills of Oregon back in 1989. Like Hermann, the Evenstad’s brought with them an affinity for Burgundy that influences their wines.
Domaine Serene
Harris introduced me to three award-winning wines that are worthwhile additions to the season. ‘r’ Rosé Domaine Serene’s multi-vintage ‘r’ Rosé is a great pre-food menu addition since it’s light and cleansing. It’s also a wonderful option for brunch and can fill in the gaps in foods that don’t pair well with other wines. The care that goes into producing this bottle makes it an anomaly among rosé wines, in that it can be aged and enjoyed for a handful of years or consumed young. Evenstad Reserve Chardonnay “Usually people that dislike Chardonnay haven’t had great Chardonnay,” says Harris. With clear Burgundian influences, Domaine Serene’s Evenstad Reserve Chardonnay is floral on the nose and derives its bright acidity from the volcanic Dundee soils, high elevation slopes and Dijon clone vines. It made waves in 2016 as Oregon’s first Chardonnay to take #1 white wine in the world, let alone break the top 10, in Wine Spectator’s coveted Top 100 Wines of the Year list.
SOTER VINEYARDS “Having experienced 45 vintages, I am a bit like the proverbial polar bear bearing witness to ice melt” explains Tony Soter who, alongside his late wife Michelle, founded Soter Vineyards after relocating from California’s wine country. “[Oregon has gone] from a marginal climate with uneven performance historically to an unprecedented string of successful vintages this last decade.”
Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir The Evenstad’s Reserve is Domaine Serene’s flagship Pinot Noir, and one of the most consistently-awarded Pinot Noir in Brut Rosé America. Berry and cherry aromas on the nose foreshadow an In 1997, Soter’s Brut Rosé, made in the traditional Champagne method, array of dark fruit flavors on the palate. was their first wine produced in Oregon. Michelle Ross, Soter’s Trade Specialist, describes this wine as “fresh strawberries over baked bread.” Pinot Noir is a versatile wine when it comes to food, but Harris With delicate bubbles and baking spices on the finish, this wine makes emphasizes pairing based on texture. “People match flavors a great accompaniment to spiced ham or stuffing. with food and wine pairings all the time. They don’t often match textures,” he says, “pork and duck are a match made in heaven, Savannah Ridge Pinot Noir or even a prime rib or a great rib eye.” Info: domaineserene.com. The ancient marine sediment in Mineral Springs gives this wine a rich earthy flavor. This 2017 wine is composed of four out of five of the label’s clonal Pinot Noir grapes and was only produced in one Soter Vineyards other vintage, 2015, due to a surplus in production. In addition to the expected cherry and spices typical of Pinot Noir, the Savannah Ridge shows green pepper nuance on the palate.
Mineral Springs Ranch Pinot Noir Soter’s Mineral Springs Ranch Pinot Noir expresses all five of the vineyard’s clonal Pinot Noir grapes, giving it a good deal of character. We tasted the 2016 and 2017 vintages. Both showcased vanilla on the nose, hinting at a modest amount of new oak used in production. The slightly older 2016 is easy to drink with well-integrated tannins. The younger vintage became surprisingly refined over the course of a few days. Ross describes these wines as great for the “Pinot-curious” because they’re a bit fuller than a typical Pinot Noir and might appeal to drinkers of Cabernet Sauvignon. They’d pair well with herbs and roasted meats. These wines are available on the companies’ websites, but you can also find Soter’s “Planet Oregon” label more widely distributed in health food stores like Whole Foods. Info: sotervineyards.com. All three of these winemakers pointed to the terroir’s uniqueness, climate, and culture as culminating in creating truly phenomenal wines. “We have found some of the best places on earth to grow these wines,” says Soter. “And I, for one, will happily spend the rest of my time on the planet creating delicious evidence in defense of that proposition.” • NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 67

SPIRITS ANIMALS
SPIRITS AND THEIR ANIMAL CONNECTION By Lori Simmons Zelenko
pirit animals guide us through the journey of life, they bond with us to reveal how to leverage our personal best as we move forward day by day and, yes, cocktail by cocktail. Protective forces that relate to our inner character, spirit animals may have originated with Native Americans, but their acceptance transcends faiths and cultures. Each spirit brand we’ve shared here intuitively reveals the characteristic traits of spirit animals—yours, mine, and ours. Each creature resonates, transcending the bottle to embrace us all as we imbibe. No doubt a few sips of Mezcal empowers, so what better spirit animal to share than the wolf? War and sun combined in a keystone figure, a predator yet a valuable environmental catalyst. Bourbon and Kentucky, the land of racehorses bred to perfection, are inextricable. So, it’s only natural that thoroughbreds would be exalted on stellar vintages. Some wink at the concept of spirits’ animals, wittily remarking on an animal connection that speeds us virtually to destinations and desires. Others have a heritage with symbols speaking to history and mythology, from fire-eating dragons to rapacious raptors, each bottle we’ve selected has a tale to tell. What’s your story? Who’s your spirit animal? What spirits’ animal do you gravitate to? Read on to find a force that’s ready to be with you.
PINHOOK BOHEMIAN BOURBON
HUMBOLDT ORGANIC VODKA
With a personality as unique as the thoroughbred on the label, this high proof Bourbon is an instant collectible. Pinhook’s 2020 vintages are the first whiskeys to come out of the distillery (Castle & Key) in 50 years. Proofed at 95 and meticulously blended, this champion spirit has aromas of orange peel, candied pecans, clove, and wet stone. Bet on this winner! Info: pinhookbourbon.com.
The crab on the bottle of this 100 percent organic vodka is a nod to Northern California’s Humboldt County and the community’s tradition of crabbing and fishing. Slow carbon-filtered at sea level, this crisp, clean vodka is distilled from organic sugarcane. The crab makes a statement here, reminding us of how important it is to preserve the pristine waters that flow through an untouched True California. Genuinely the spirit of California! PAPA SEAL SINGLE BARREL BERMUDA RUM Considered the “Father of all Rums,” Papa Seal 2020 is a complex and beautiful sipping nightcap with hints of caramel, spice, vanilla, and dried fruit. Distilled from molasses this 83-proof blend is aged in once-used bourbon barrels exposed to Bermuda’s humid, salty sea air. The little, barrel juggling “Black Seal” evolved from the nickname for the black sealing wax used to close the rum bottles around 1914. Ahoy mate, sail away with this Bermuda bliss! Info: goslingsrum.com.
FIREBALL CINNAMON WHISKY MONTELOBOS MEZCAL “Tastes like heaven, burns like hell,” so this natural, cinnamon-spiked 66 proof Canadian whiskey promises. Swill it or sip it, it’s an invitation to stand face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon who just ate a whisky barrel full of spicy cinnamon. Some drinkers say it tastes like Atomic Fireball candies or Big Red gum but at 20 percent less alcohol than the average whiskey this sweet-spicy combo goes down easy. Heaven sent or hell bent, drinking games prevail with this sassy spirit. Info: fireballwhisky.com.
D ubb e d “a mos aic of b a l ance and complex it y,” Montelob os Me z c a l is artisanal, organic, and sustainable not to mention flavorful, citrusy with a lingering charred mesquite taste, at once sweet and smokey. Montelobos is named for the “Mountain of the Wolves” that overlooks Palenque in Santiago Matalán, Oaxaco where this mezcal is crafted. We’re howling with gratitude for Montelobos’ support for the Mexican gray wolf, aka the lobo, through their partnership with The Wolf Conservation Center. Bravo lobos! Info: montelobos.com.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
ON THE SMALL SCREEN By Jenny Peters
ecause of the pandemic, many A-list, Oscar-contending movies are either sitting out 2020 completely or (in many cases) heading directly to streaming. So, you’ll notice that many of our small-screen choices for the last two months of this dismal year are films, rather than ongoing TV series. BIG STARS ON YOUR SMALL SCREENS BRIDGERTON Netflix Shonda Rhimes made a huge deal to bring Shondaland, her TV production company, to Netflix; this is their first foray into that deal. Bridgerton comes from Chris Van Dusen, known for his work on Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, and is adapted from the novels by Julia Quinn. This comic drama takes place in high society during the Regency period in England (think the 1800s) and features a diverse cast that includes Julie Andrews. COME AWAY Relativity Films/On Demand Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo lead the cast in this fanciful tale that mixes Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Their children (Keira Chansa and Reece Yates) love letting their imaginations run wild in this very English 18th-century tale of adventure, magic and much more. Michael Caine and Derek Jacobi also costar, giving this PG-rated flick quite a pedigree. HILLBILLY ELEGY Netflix Amy Adams and Glenn Close star in director Ron Howard’s adaptation of J. D. Vance’s best-selling memoir of his family’s Appalachian roots. Between them, those two powerhouse actors have 13 Oscar nominations and not one win; the buzz in Hollywood is that both are leading contenders yet again for their work in this R-rated emotional drama. Gabriel Basso stars as J. D. and is all grown up from his role as one of the kids in Super 8. MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM Netflix Oscar winner Viola Davis stars as blues legend Ma Rainey in this music-filled adaptation of August Wilson’s play. Set in 1920s Chicago, the dynamo supporting cast is led by Chadwick Boseman, in his last screen role before his untimely death. That bittersweet fact makes the blues that imbue this R-rated film hit just a bit closer to the heart than usual. THE MIDNIGHT SKY Netflix George Clooney produced, directed and stars in this cautionary post-apocalyptic story of survival, both on earth and in space. He’s one of the earth’s sole survivors, a scientist bent on stopping a space exploration team from returning to a battered planet. Felicity Jones co-stars as the astronaut he must convince to change course in this gripping PG-13-rated futuristic thriller. 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
THE PROM Netflix The cast of this wacky musical comedy helmed by Ryan Murphy reads like a who’s who of Hollywood. Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman lead the pack of madcap players in this PG-13-rated farce and are joined by James Corden, Kerry Washington, Tracey Ullman, KeeganMichael Key and Mary Kay Place. They’re all in for a prom night that no one will ever forget. SOUL Disney+ Two-time Oscar winner Pete Docter once again takes the reins as the writer-director of Pixar’s latest animated adventure, Soul. Having given the world Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out, it seems pretty certain that this tale of Joe, a musician who’s lost his mojo, is going to make both adults and kids fall in love with him (as voiced by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx). Also starring Tina Fey, Angela Bassett, Quest Love, and Phylicia Rashad. THE STAND CBS All Access One epic nine-episode mini-series arrives to the small screen in December, as Stephen King’s classic post-pandemic story returns in an all-new take to the novel published in 1978. Painfully timely, this time out Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg leads the cast, which also features James Marsden, Alexander Skarsgaard, and Amber Heard.
HOLIDAY MUSICAL DELIGHTS DOLLY PARTON’S CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE Netflix Christmas in 2020 may be very different than other years for many of us, but Dolly Parton wants to make sure that everyone has a holly jolly holiday experience. She’s written 14 original songs for this brand-new Christmas tale, and she also co-stars, along with Christine Baranski, Jenifer Lewis, and Treat Williams. Debbie Allen directed and choreographed this musical journey, too. JINGLE JANGLE: A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY Netflix Combine the acting talents of Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose, Grammy winner Ricky Martin, and Emmy winner KeeganMichael Key with all-new original songs from EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner) phenom John Legend and the result is Jingle Jangle. Set in a timeless town and following the trials and tribulations of a famed toymaker, this musical fantasy flick is a must-see for the entire family. • NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 73

A CIRCUS FOR ALL One of my earliest memories from a career in the circus was experiencing a group of Deaf teens whose joyful faces lit up the entire arena when a clown performing for them used ASL. I knew at that moment that the circus can reach the heart of all people. This became my lifelong personal quest.
OMNIUM Banner
Before the current pandemic, I was the Director of Community Programs and sales for the Big Apple Circus. For many years, I had the honor to witness the joy of families who were able to share a rare positive bonding experience together and not have to leave any member home. The smiles from kids who rarely smiled and the unified laughter peeling from thousands of different souls, as beautiful as this was, it was never enough. Joy should be accessible all the time to all people, not only on certain days. Children of all ages deserve to be inspired by someone in whom they can see themselves reflected. As the pandemic hit and larger companies folded their tent flaps, there arose an opportunity to create. Omnium is a team of incredibly dedicated professionals whose mission is to take that first step on our journey to make the world a better place through the universal icon of the circus. T h r o u g h e x t r a o r d i n a r y, comprehensively diverse, and inclusive entertainment, we create a space where people from different walks of life can experience wonder, laughter, and joy together and celebrate that which unites us in humanity. Laughter is for everyone. Hand balancing artists, Alan Pagnota and Rafael Ferreira. ©Ana Paula Marchini

ELIZABETH CHAN
THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS IN SONG By Bailey Beckett
here is good reason Elizabeth Chan, America’s most successful Christmas singer/songwriter/ composer, has been called the “Queen of Christmas.” With the release of her ninth album, Celebrate Me Home, the artist is sharing unusual circumstances that led her to record music in a make-shift studio, quarantined from friends and family, and pregnant with her second child. Chan’s new album, which debuted last month, is her most personal yet, filled with reflections about 2020 while still delivering the soulful holiday cheer that has become her trademark. “Many of my family members got sick from COVID-19,” Chan says. “I lost relatives to the disease. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do a record because my mind wasn’t in the optimistic place it usually is during this time of year when I’m normally writing Christmas songs. It was hard for me to make sense of anything during this time and keep my family together.” That’s putting it mildly. Chan began 2020 on a high note, having released eight topselling albums and even meeting with Hollywood studios, eager to turn her life story into a major motion picture. And then, the pandemic hit. The world froze.
A REFLECTION OF THE TIMES Chan’s plans to record her ninth album, Celebrate Me Home, were suddenly in flux for the Christmas season. With recording studios closed, she was forced to create her own studio in an office, learning how to produce and engineer tracks on the album from colleagues remotely. In one corner, Chan looked after her two-yearold daughter, Noelle, who was being home-schooled. And in another, Chan wrote, performed, and recorded songs on the new album, which took a personal tone that reflected the times. “It was very empowering,” says Chan. Further complicating the year, Chan learned she was pregnant and was then forced to quarantine her family from her loved ones. The circumstances had a profound effect on Chan’s music, as she witnessed family members get sick, artist friends lose work, and the world as she knew it changed virtually overnight. Bringing a new life into the world also weighed heavily on her mind. Suddenly, recording Christmas music had a purpose beyond spreading holiday cheer. “I needed to do this record for my friends and family as much as for myself,” she said.
DEEPLY PERSONAL Chan began writing deeply personal lyrics about life, love, and loss, including a message for her unborn child. A common thread throughout all the music is the journey home. “We’ve all lost so much this year, including the ability to celebrate with family in person,” says Chan. “I revel in celebration. Christmas is not about spending money on presents but spending time and in the presence of the people you love.” Though Celebrate Me Home found inspiration in 2020; the album also includes Chan’s infectious holiday spirit. Her versatile voice, capable of high and low pitches bring any song to life, providing the perfect soundtrack for Christmas or any time, as she learned. “I’m proud of Celebrate Me Home because the message extends beyond the calendar. We›ve been reminded how precious life is, and it’s helped us remember what’s most important, year-round. But Christmas will always be the perfect day to celebrate.” Chan’s never-ending belief in the magic of the holidays has made her into one of Christmas Music’s brightest stars, listened to by millions around the globe. Hailed as “America’s most successful, and perhaps only, full-time Christmas singer/composer,” by the New Yorker, the artist debuted her first album, Everyday Holidays, in 2011 by launching a Kickstarted campaign that helped fund the recording. Since then, her yearly Christmas albums have become an eagerly awaited part of the holiday season, spawning many Billboard Top 10 singles. PENGUINS IN PERIL By Michael LaChance
hey’re sports mascots and cartoon characters, holiday decorations, and stuffed toys. No doubt about it, the power of this black-and-white creature rules. Penguins are a hit with their quirky charm. But it’s going to take more than a pop-culture obsession for these sleek, entertaining, and endearing birds to survive. Penguins are flightless birds that breed in colonies, have Happy Feet, and are sometimes called Chilly Willy—there’s also no denying that they’re extremely cute (and well-dressed: hello tuxedo coats!) creatures. These Southern Hemisphere birds live and breed in colonies, and like most wildlife, need our help. Luckily, many organizations are working to fight climate change, disturbance to habitat, and other things that put these picture-perfect birds at risk. We spoke to leaders in this avian rescue community to see what’s affecting penguins and how we can help.
CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT It’s no longer possible to ignore the effects of climate change. As Pablo Garcia Borboroglu from the Global Penguin Society explains, “The earth’s current climate change is no longer a prediction. It is unequivocal and when combined with other threats, there’s a direct impact on the iconic penguin species. Some Antarctic regions are warming much faster than the average rate of the earth’s overall warming. Alterations in the patterns of ice formation and melting, together with increasing rain and snow precipitations, have changed breeding and feeding habitat quality and availability.” Rosalie Goldsworthy, from Penguin Rescue NZ, tells us disease is an issue, too. “Climate change is affecting the distribution of mosquitoes and adding to the prevalence of avian malaria,” she says, adding, “Coastal erosion is reducing access to nest sites for penguins, and Little Penguins are adversely affected by storm events at sea.” Pablo tells us temperate species (outside Antarctic regions) are also altered by climate variation. And, since they don’t fly and travel for food, climate change can hinder their survival. Dr. Katta Ludynia from Southern African Foundation For The Conservation Of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) tells us about the shifts in fish distribution and changes in African penguins’ most important prey: sardine and anchovy. “The lack of fish has dramatic effects on many of South Africa’s seabirds, especially the African penguin. Climate change also negatively affects their breeding as extreme weather events (heat waves, cold spells and storms) lead to nest abandonment,” she says. This affects the Little Penguin species too. Roland Pick from the Penguin Foundation says, “they feed on pilchards, anchovies, squid and sea jellies from the ocean’s pelagic layer.” In ideal circumstances, this remains at a fairly constant temperature.” However, he says, “as ocean’s temperatures rise, the penguins preferred food source may move deeper into the ocean to avoid increasing water temperatures, into areas deeper than penguins can dive.”

HUMAN INTERFERENCE For penguin colonies, human activities pose some of the most damaging threats. There are fisheries, fishing nets that entangle penguins, oil spills, and pollution. And don’t forget about plastic! As Pablo says, “Oil spills killed thousands of penguins in four continents, and now plastic pollution is also affecting them—we found penguins entangled, with plastic bottles around their necks or plastic bags strangling them. Penguins also eat small pieces of plastic that harm—and can kill—them too.” Dr. Ludynia tells us about habitat destruction among African penguin colonies, saying, “St Croix Island, the world’s largest African penguin colony, is located close to the Port of Ngqura, the deep-water port on the east coast of South Africa. Population numbers have declined since port expansion, and activities like ship-to-ship bunkering and increased shipping traffic have begun to eradicate the South African penguins.” Roland says that an imbalance of the ocean’s biodiversity and food web can result from overfishing. “Marine debris is also a risk, and sometimes it’s the little things we do or change, that make a difference. One of the prime offenders is helium balloons. Eventually, they come back down and deflate in the ocean. A deflated balloon can look like a sea jelly, which is part of the penguins’ diet,” he explains. In New Zealand, the extinction of yellow-eyed penguins (which Rosalie Goldsworthy tells us is predicted to happen within 10 years on Mainland NZ) is caused by anthropomorphic effects. “Between our desire to get into their spaces, our pets, and our commercial greed, we are destroying an iconic species that has survived for 60 million years,” she says. “We need to be mindful of disposing rubbish (especially plastic) appropriately. It ends up in our waterways, which drain into our oceans, so the onus is on us to do the right thing,” Roland adds.

SAVE THE PENGUINS
PREDATOR PREDICAMENTS
Rosalie Goldsworthy believes the first step, especially in NZ, is to advocate for dogs to be on leads or muzzled at the beach. As she explains, “When a penguin is struggling, it will come ashore to rest and recover. If a dog gets it at this point, it will die. If you come across a penguin on the beach, in the daytime, something is wrong. Call authorities.
Even without human interference, penguins can face issues in the wild. Rosalie tells us that her organization works primarily for yellow-eyed penguins “through optimizing habitat, maximizing survival and breeding, minimizing disturbance, enhancing management through science, advocating for penguin conservation, and managing the risk of disease.” She also says the loss of habitat occurs “as more coastal areas are given over to farming, predation, disease, human disturbance, and starvation. The mainland predator is dogs.”
She reminds us, “Saving penguins is skilled work, but we can’t do it if we don’t find them. New Zealand wildlife is adapted for aerial predators who will freeze when disturbed. This does not mean that they like you; it means they are terrified. Let’s co-exist with our iconic species by giving them the space they need to live.” Pablo tells us, “Because of cultural evolutions, the way we live has moved us away from nature. We ignore how much we need the environment to keep us mentally and physically healthy. This is unsustainable. We need to increase awareness and educate communities about sustainability.” Even though climate change may be difficult to grasp for some people, small changes like avoiding single-use plastics at home can help. Education is also important—organizations like the Global Penguin Society give out educational material (check out the books, Sea Messengers, and Penguins: Natural History and Conservation) to create awareness. Volunteering can also help foundations like this continue their work. SANCCOB explains that as non-profits, they rely on donations. “Veterinary care, medication, rehabilitation, and fish for feeding are all covered by fundraising,” they explain. 86 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
Pablo explains that over half of the 18 species of penguins are on the list of threatened species (per the International Union for the Conservation of Nature). The people at SANCCOB tell us that for the African penguin, lack of fish and breeding habitat, and predators like Kelp gulls are at risk as marine pollution and tourist disturbances. Little penguins are vulnerable on land, and Roland explains, “their biggest threat on Australia’s Phillip Island comes from above. Birds of prey such as Whitebellied sea eagles, Swamp Harriers, and Pacific gulls. Foxes are also considered a threat; however, after years of hard work—in 2017, we declared the island fox-free.” There’s also the need to control feral cats, and out at sea, certain species of seals may prey on penguins.
SUCCESS STORIES Looking for some success stories to brighten your day? Remember, research and rescue have already done a world of good. The Global Penguin Society combines scientific problem identification with approaching governments to establish protected areas and helping to put it all in place. However, as Pablo says, “Often in the countries in which we operate, Governments are unstable, and Administrations change all the time so, by involving communities we have higher stability and continuity.” They’ve helped protect 32 million acres of habitat for penguins, benefiting 2.4 million penguins worldwide. And then there’s Australia’s Penguin Foundation’s Summerland Peninsula story from 1985. With research as the cornerstone of the Phillip Island Nature Parks operations, it’s no surprise that this helped save the day here. After a scientific staff paper predicted that the world’s most famous colony of Little Penguins at the Penguin Parade could be extinct here by 2000, something had to be done. Roland explains, “This was the last of the original 10 penguin colonies on Phillip Island before European settlement, and the findings set off alarm bells across the community and Government.” Luckily, with the help of a paper that included measures to protect the Little Penguins and their habitat, a new program helped the colony rebuild from just 12,000 to 30,000 breeding birds. Seeing that this is possible, all we need to do is spend more time, energy, and resources protecting precious wildlife like the penguins. As Rosalie so aptly puts it, “Adults share their time and resources with others. We need to share the planet too!” •

DISCOVER THE SWEETEST TREAT FOR DOGS BONNE ET FILOU DOG MACARONS By Pamela Smythe Woods
ogs turned into fur babies and dog owners turned into pet parents. And with this lifestyle shift, what happened? Dog products became humanized. No longer must we hide the ugly dog bed in the closet when guests visit. Beds–and many other pet accessories–are now so beautiful, they’ve become a part of our living space, a reflection of a lifestyle that says, “we are proud to be pet parents.” The sophistication of everything from dog accessories to dog food makes us humans not only enjoy our dogs more. but places more emphasis on sharing what’s right for our fur children.
Founders + Filou
Meet Bonne et Filou, a French-inspired dog treat company that is lovingly compared by customers to Ladurée (the posh–human –French macaron brand with a global following and a flagship in NYC). Bonne and Filou, Founder & CEO, Nicolas Nemeth and his wife, Linzi, wanted to find a way to treat their dog to their favorite French pastry. Always fascinated with the lavish lifestyles of the dogs of Louis XIV, King of France, they set out to make a treat inspired by his royal dogs, Bonne and Filou, who lived in the Palace of Versailles. They slept in satin sheets, wore diamond collars, and even had their own personal chef (Shhh- don’t let Fido get any ideas here). Nemeth says his goal with Bonne et Filou was to make a treat so exquisite and delicious that even pet parents could hardly keep their paws off it. “The biggest compliment I can get is when a new customer tells me they thought our dog macarons were for humans, until they tried to take a bite out of them,” Nemeth reveals lovingly. “While our macarons are indeed safe for human consumption and our dogs love them, they aren’t the sugary French treat humans are used to. We designed these vet-approved dog macarons carefully. Nutritionists worked closely with us, specifically to assure this hard, chewable treat for dogs could be enjoyed for an extended period of time.” Bonne et Filou uses all-natural ingredients to handmake their macarons in small batches in the USA. Each dog macaron is made with human-grade ingredients including oat flour, honey, coconut oil and an all-natural yogurt filling. Unlike the macarons from brands destined for human consumption like Ladurée, they have a 12+ months shelf life. No refrigeration is required. And there are no artificial ingredients or preservatives. With five delicious flavors to choose from strawberry, mint, lavender, vanilla, and rose, Fido’s going to have a great time picking a favorite. “It goes without saying that dogs are the new children. So naturally, dog parents want to give their four-legged besties more than just a treat. They want to build an experience around treatgiving. Bonne et Filou fulfills this need most beautifully,” Nemeth is proud to report. Each box of Bonne et Filou has six dog macarons inside (priced at $23.99). A combo pack of three boxes (18 dog macarons) is $64.99. These delicious and lovely macarons are available at www.BonneEtFilou.com as well as over 330 retail stores including department stores and pet boutiques. A perfect dayto-day treat for all of us who love to spoil our dogs, these tasty delights are also a unique gift. • 88 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

Robin Lathrop fuses her passion for art and fashion with project management expertise to deliver the ideal day. New York Lifestyles sat down with Robin Lathrop to discuss her career, her event planning company Robin Lathrop, and what the event producing industry has done to adapt to the “new normal.” Are you a native New Yorker? Yes! I was born in New York City and raised in Hudson Valley. I love everything about the city. So much so, I moved back in 1985. How did you get into event producing? I attended SUNY Albany, where I graduated with my business and theater degrees. I believe that the best events are planned and produced like a show, with the guests being the audience, and it is all about perfect planning/timing/ability to pivot seamlessly in a moment. How and when did you start your own event company? I worked for an event company at The Plaza Hotel for 8 years. After feeling that I had outgrown my position’s capacity, I left and started my own company. I believe that everything is possible—and I have never looked back!
Working on Virtual Commencement
Our team will manage everything from site selection, décor, food and beverage design…and much more! Tell us more about ByRobin and what it offers. ByRobin is an all-encompassing production company. We offer virtual, hybrid, and live event services. Our team will manage everything from site selection, registration, décor, food and beverage design, talent acquisition, technical support, and much more! What is the most memorable event you have created? One of my most memorable events was a 60th birthday party at Lincoln Center for an immensely powerful man. The event took place on the only dark day of the theatre. Our entire team pulled out all the stops, working around the clock for 48 hours to pull off a once in a lifetime event! With the COVID-19 pandemic changing the event producing industry, how did you transition from live events to virtual? The pandemic struck right before our 2020 commencement for The New School. We immediately pivoted and created a unique, interactive, live virtual commencement experience for 12,000 people. What does the future hold for event producing? I think that hybrid model events will play a key role in event producing. With the holiday season coming up, what are some hints for someone planning a festive event or party? Be prepared to plan your event in a shorter amount of time and add in some virtual elements. Robin Lathrop ©ByRobin

MY NEW YORK STORY
GERALDO RIVERA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN TV By Peter Elston
ustachioed reporter extraordinaire Geraldo Rivera celebrated his 50th Anniversary in television with I Am Geraldo, 50 years. The docuseries which takes you behind one of the scenes of one of journalism’s most storied careers is available to view now on Fox Nation, the Fox News digital platform. Born in Brooklyn, his family moved to Long Island where he attended West Babylon High School. From there, he enrolled in the State University of New York Maritime College (1961-1963), where he became a member of the rowing team, and later transferred to the University of Arizona and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration. After returning to New York in 1966, the young Rivera enrolled in Brooklyn Law School and subsequently held internships with the New York District Attorney’s office under legendary crime-fighter Frank Hogan, before receiving his J.D. in 1969. He was admitted to the New York State Bar later that year. “In the words of Jerry Garcia, it’s been a long, strange ride,” said Rivera, who has never made an appearance without his trademark mustache over five decades. “I’m like an old friend to so many people now. It’s more than credibility, it’s familiarity, and I honor that, I treasure that. It’s my most important resource and my most valuable asset.”
BROADCAST SUCCESS The four-part series follows Rivera’s career from littleknown New York reporter for Eyewitness News back in the 1970s, into international stardom—and the bumps along the way, including his infamous live coverage of the opening of gangster Al Capone’s vault. In it the Emmy and Peabody-award winning correspondent reflects on his most high-profile investigations, beginning with his epic expose on the conditions of the Willowbrook State School. In 1972, the 28-year old reporter for WABC-TV snuck into the institution on Staten Island and found proof of a dangerously overcrowded, filthy. and poorly maintained facility. Scenes from inside Willowbrook were beyond comprehension, and the local news story was watched by millions. In that riveting crusade to close America’s grim institutions for the developmentally disabled, Rivera made history. His reporting at Willowbrook is still being taught today in every school of social work in the nation, forever changing attitudes about the care and treatment of the mentally challenged. “I know I would have been famous, I would have been, you know, a New York celebrity,” he said. “I won my first Columbia DuPont award in 1971, a few months before Willowbrook. But Willowbrook kind of supercharged all that.”

A METEORIC RISE On a personal level, the impact of the series propelled the little-known New York reporter to international stardom. No longer just a rebel with a cause, Rivera mingled with everyone from Andy Warhol to Frank Sinatra, his career saw a meteoric rise. The arc of his unique career and vivid personal life took Rivera from gritty street reporter to jet-set playboy to host of saucy late night and raucous daytime television programs. Following his departure from ABC for his story on John F. Kennedy’s relationship with Marylin Monroe, and the live coverage of the opening of gangster Al Capone’s vault, Rivera was offered his own talk show with salacious and intriguing stories, making even more of a household name.

In the fourth and final part of the series, due to the tragic events of 9/11, the broadcaster no longer sought the big money contracts with the networks. After taking a pay cut from NBC, Rivera reinvented himself and revigorated his career when he joined Fox News as their Chief War Correspondent, covering the ugliness and heroism of the war on terror, One of the last of the rock and roll newsmen, Rivera went everywhere from the killing fields of Iraq and Afghanistan, Central America, Africa and around the globe, inter viewing boldface n a m e s f r o m Ya s i r Arafat to Fidel Castro, Muhammad A l i to C harles Manson to Donald Trump. A NEW YORK RANT By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
A MUCH-NEEDED REBELLION One of this country’s greatest Statesmen, and a Founding Father of our great nation, Thomas Jefferson, once wrote, “A little rebellion now and then is a good thing.” Little did he know, as he penned a letter to James Madison from Paris, that this quote would be even more relevant some 233 years later. Yes, my fellow New Yorkers, a little rebellion is certainly needed right now in New York. With both Mayor Bill deBlasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo, we have been “ruled” by a deluded, self-aggrandizing, woefully corrupt totalitarian regime for far too long. What was promised by Cuomo as transparent and fair governance in Albany has been anything but while DeBlasio continues to believe his own lies. By now, you are asking, “why is he saying, deluded?” Well, if you read the Governor’s new book, American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic, you would know exactly how delusional this phony would-be Emperor is. Cuomo places the blame for the over 11,000 senior deaths squarely at the feet of both the New York Post and President Trump. Um, how is that even remotely possible? Cuomo made the decisions for New York State during the lockdown, not the NY Post or POTUS. Yet, people will believe this malarky. Why is the Governor doing everything he can to block an investigation into the senior and nursing home scandal? Had enough? Yet another controversy hit Albany in the form of the Governor’s failed rent relief program where hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are still suffering and will likely be evicted from their homes—all while the would-be Dictator was on LIVE With Kelly & Ryan promoting his tome. Yeah, because Cuomo cares about the people. Sure. As to Mayor deBlasio, my fellow Gothamites are all too familiar with my feelings for this lowlife. However, that may be too kind a description for the man who is solely responsible for the rabid crime rate, homeless epidemic, and utter failure the school system is experiencing in “re-opening.” Frankly, I imagine a trip to McDonald’s would involve less heartburn than what this fool has caused. Bear in mind this is not the first time New York has been faced with this level of inadequacy or politicization, lest we forget names like Robert Moses, John Lindsay, et al. It took New York City 25 years to recover from the failed “progressive” policies of the late ’60s through the ’70s that led to historically high crime rates. So, I say it is time to rebel against the two administrations whose decisions have destroyed the progress and growth our great state and city have experienced over the last three decades. It is time to rise and say Enough Is Enough! Or, in the spirit of the Queen of Hearts in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, I say “off with their heads!”
MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH, HAPPY KWANZA Happy Holidays. What’s that? Yes, I am that guy. I am sick to death of the politically correct nonsense that makes no sense whatsoever. How is it insulting to wish someone a Merry Christmas? How is it wrong to say Happy Hanukkah? It isn’t! But the progressives and politically correct would have you believe otherwise. Judeo-Christian values promote inclusion, understanding, and love. As well the real Koran (not the bastardization of this holy book that would-be Islamist terrorists use to divide and destroy). So how does it make sense that wishing someone glad tidings in their own faith’s way is offensive? Truth: It doesn’t! I stopped saying Happy Holidays years ago. Why? Because I was PO’d by the obnoxious, self-righteous ass-hats, who try to tell everyone what to say and how to act. Enough already. I am not insulted when someone says, “Happy Hanukkah” or “Happy Kwanza.” I am honored that they think enough of me to wish me well in their own faith’s way during a high holy season. That is being an adult. That is being an American. That is being a real New Yorker. Don’t be fooled, kids, the politically correct are out to ruin Christmas, Hanukkah, and every other celebration that brings people together. It’s time we stop the nonsense and remember that the holidays are meant to be a time of unity and love, not politics and division. So, I say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Thank you for an incredible start to A New York Rant in New York Lifestyles magazine. Here’s to hoping for a brighter 2021! • Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author. They do not purport to reflect the opinions or views of New York Lifestyles. TIME OUT WITH… ANN LIGUORI By Harry Brads
nn Liguori is an expert sports radio and television commentator, inter viewer, author, and businesswoman. She is a leader and visionary in the world of sports media, distinguishing herself in her business as both on-air talent and the owner of sports radio and television properties. Ann covered her 38th straight US Open Tennis Championship marking 33 years reporting for top sports radio station, WFAN-NY. Ann recently broadcast US Open golf updates which took place at Winged Foot in Westchester and Ann will provide hourly updates on The Masters in November.
AN ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER
Ann was the first woman to host a call-in sports show on WFAN-New York, where she hosted a weekly sports talk show for over 20 years and continues as the station’s golf and tennis correspondent and is host of Talking Golf with Ann Liguori, which airs on WFAN during summer months. Ann was also an original on The Golf Channel, hosting the weekly prime-time Conversations with Ann Liguori show which featured Ann playing golf with and interviewing an A-list of celebrities including Matthew McConaughey, Celine Dion, Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner, Joe Pesci, Smoky Robinson and Alice Cooper, to name a few. Ann can also be heard Saturday mornings on Sports Innerview on WLIW.org. The sportscaster’s insightful interviews shed light on current headlines in the news such as sexual abuse scandals, and money management for athletes to name a few important topics of the day. “Loving what you do is key to a happy life I believe. Having a passion for what I pursue, day to day, gives me joy and a non-stop fascination with creating new opportunities. I’ve had a trailblazing, fulfilling career that’s still going strong. Yet, I believe my best years are ahead of me,” said Ann.

Ann’s sportscasting is only the tip of the iceberg. Founder and president of the Ann Liguori Foundation (ALF) also is a big part of her schedule raising money and awareness for cancer research, care, and prevention in addition to mentoring young people hoping to pursue a career in sports media. Her 22nd Ann Liguori Foundation Charity Golf Classic took place this past October at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton. For over twenty years, Ann has helped raise over $2 million for various charities focusing on cancer prevention, research, and awareness for organizations such as St Jude’s, Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, and Kids Need More. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done with organizing one charity golf tourney every year for the past 22 years. I lost my Dad to cancer when I was in college and my 22-year-old brother from leukemia a year later. It was devastating for me and my Mom, younger sister, and brother. Everyone is affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Being proactive, raising money and awareness for cancer research in their memory, helps in dealing with these tragedies,” said Ann. Ann also established the Ann Liguori Foundation Sports Media Scholarship administered by NY Women in Communications (NYWICI) and the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) Champions Mentorship program. Ann has collaborated with Holly Daniels Christensen, Founder & CEO of Dune Jewelry (dunejewelry.com), with her jewelry line known as the Hamptons Rope Collection. The custom-made pieces incorporate sand from one’s favorite beach or golf course in sophisticated, timeless pieces for women and men. It’s never too early to begin your Holiday shopping! Savor the memories from your favorite beach or golf experience with the Hamptons Rope Collection. Ann has a simple belief. “Love what you do and who you are. Be a role model to all and lead by example. Let goodness prevail.” For more information on Ann Liguori, visit annliguori.com. • 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
