CHARITIES & VOLUNTEERING

COMIC RELIEF ROWATHON

As two of the charity reps (along with Harinee, Abbi and Rithi) we were brainstorming ideas for what our next charity event could be following our Galentines rose exchange fundraiser. We decided that we were keen to organise a sporty activity that the whole school would be able to participate in, and so decided a row-athon would be a good idea Considering it was Comic Relief week (and Red Nose day on Friday) we thought it would be fitting to raise money for this fantastic charity that supports so many people both in the UK and around the world We held the event in the lower atrium so it would be easy for students to support their friends, and people could easily come and participate

The event was very popular, and we filled all of the slots that we were looking to fill (each slot cost £1 for five minutes of rowing) It was a lot of fun; music was playing and students supporting the rowers during every slot We had a variety of rowers including Year 7's who had never been on a rowing machine before to Mr Shoults who was rowing in his suit and tie!

The furthest distance rowed in five minutes was a lengthy 1350metres, achieved by Mr Lamagna The event started at 8am and ended at 5:30pm and rowing was taking place before school, during break, during lunch and after school A huge thank you should also go to Miss Newman who helped us organise the event and offered us great advice throughout the planning process (she also went on the rowing machines seven times within the day!) Overall, we rowed 118 71km as a school and raised over £120 for comic relief; thank you to everyone who took part and look out for our next event!

STAFF VOLUNTEER NEWS

I was so chuffed to see that the Year 10s had decided to adopt a penguin I have such a soft spot for them.

Some time ago, when I was teaching in Cape Town, I arranged for a group of girls to help out when thousands of penguins were affected by an oil spill from a ship passing Cape Town We spent many afternoons, evenings and weekends feeding, treating for ingested oil cleaning feathers and forcing them to swim so they become waterproof again. I was even involved in doing blood tests

The highlight was when a few of us were taken with boxes of nowhealthy birds to the beach to release them

SCIENCE WEEK VISIT TO NORTH EALING PRIMARY SCHOOL

Well done to the Year 11 enrichment group who made Kaleidoscopes with the children at North Ealing Primary School during science week The school reported back ‘Thank you so much for the sessions yesterday The staff said it was well organised and very well received by the childrenthey really enjoyed it’

Here’s what the students said:

On Tuesday 14th March during periods 7 & 8, nine of us went down to North Ealing primary school to teach the year 3s how to create their very own Kaleidoscopes; we had been planning this activity for science week the past couple of enrichment sessions This event was so much fun! Working with younger years to inspire them to take part in engaging craft activities to celebrate science week left us feeling a massive sense of achievement and fulfillment We can't wait to start planning our next activity for the customers of Mencap!

A group of year 11's have been planning a science lesson idea in our enrichment lessons for the children in year 3 at North Ealing primary school For their science day we thought we should teach them about reflections and symmetry by creating their own kaleidoscope With the help of Dr Lai, we created a creative and engaging challenge for the children We helped them fold mirror board to create the reflective main body and they created their own pattern on tracing paper We all really enjoyed teaching and helping the children

BIRTHDAY EVENTS

This half term we started the Summer Babies Birthday Bonanza!! (We couldn’t think of another name unfortunately)

On Wednesday the 8th of March, some of the charity reps (Abbi Harinee and I) got together at 8:00 to organise who we were visiting and what special requests they had (eg: Hamilton songs, and ‘please embarrass her a lot’, which we made sure to do).

Since it was our first go and we had quite a few people we did struggle with the surprise element at times, but made up for it with the loud singing and dancing It was extremely fulfilling and funny seeing the whole class join in with us and not hesitate to participate. But all in all, I am super excited to be doing these surprises, and hope that every Wednesday morning will be as busy and entertaining as the first Rithi Y12

A quote from a Year 8 on their experience: My friend, Alice, used the birthday surprise that some Year 12’s were offering, to surprise me a couple of days after my birthday They came in playing music and sang for us, while wearing party hats and Hawaiian necklaces The whole class joined in the singing and it was all very fun. Alice did it in secret so it was a complete surprise for me! It made me feel special on my birthday! They also gave me a brownie It was quite embarrassing but it made it more exciting and fun Flo Y8

FAIRTRADE AWARDS

On Tuesday 21st February one of the Y11 enrichment groups joined a Google Meet with the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur school in Pennsylvania The class had been researching and developing their presentations on Fairtrade to present to the Notre Dame school which was part of the events being held in order to gain the next Fairtrade award - the Fairactive award On the meet they shared their presentations with the students in Pennsylvania and the US students shared their presentations and knowledge of Fairtrade in the US Here is what our students said:

Hannah, Yasmin and I really enjoyed speaking to the American students and found it very enriching It was a very interesting experience, as not only did we discuss fairtrade, but we also had an in depth conversation about their own personal topics for their final projects One of the girls was doing a presentation about the Catholic church and how their teachings affect fair trade We learnt a lot about the catholic influence on fairtrade, and hopefully our project helped her with research Over all, it was an incredibly fascinating experience, and all the girls were friendly and interested in what we had to say

YEAR 8 CHARITY EVENTS

This half term, it was the Year 8's opportunity to raise funds for a charity of their choice They have chosen The Store Cupboard The Store Cupboard is a charity that was founded during the peak of the pandemic in 2020 by local volunteers. It helps families who have a low budget for food by providing goods that are donated by food banks and volunteers, at an extremely affordable price After paying £3 50-£4 00, members will receive groceries worth £40-£50 and they support over 40 families every 6 months

Bake Sale

On the 10th March, there was a charity bake sale held at break time There was a variety of treats consisting of flapjacks brownies cupcakes cookies cinnamon swirls cake pops and much more! The sale was a huge success as we managed to sell out extremely quickly and raised over £100!

Year 8 Fair

We had a variety of stalls at the Year 8 fair, from selling various yummy goodies, to homemade items that students could take home for themselves or loved ones

PJ Day

On Thursday 16th of March, we ran a charity pyjama party. At our event we watched the hit TV show, Modern Family and sold popcorn, sweets and hot chocolate to those who participated In the end, everything was sold out and we made over £150 Years 7 and 8 were also allowed to wear pyjamas during the event and for periods seven and eight, which made it all the more enjoyable

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

Bake sale

During Fairtrade Fortnight on the 28th of February the charity reps ran a bake sale; we sold cakes brownies cookies and lots more! Every baked good had at least one Fairtrade item (whether this was Fairtrade sugar or Fairtrade chocolate) and this event helped the school achieve the FairActive Status - which is a part of Fairtrade award Our next goal is to reach the FairAchiever Status This bake sale was extremely successful raising over £150, thanks to all of your generous donations Thank you to everyone who baked something and everyone who bought something!!

Chocolate tasting event

To round up our month of fairtrade activities the Year 10 charity reps put on a chocolate tasting event and quiz Many Year 7 girls came to the event with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn about fairtrade and participate in the chocolate tasting event Everyone chose which fairtrade chocolate bar was their favourite and explained how they were inspired to start buying more fairtrade products We gave a presentation to the girls about what fairtrade was and explained how climate change is affecting farmers immensely making it harder for them to work and grow their crops, focusing on a case study from Côte d’Ivoire and outlined the struggles farmers go through there We finished the event with a kahoot which everyone immersed themselves into We look forward to receiving our FairActive Aaward to sit alongside our FairAware Award after successfully completing this event

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL FUNDRAISER

On Friday 10th March the Amnesty Society held its first fundraising event of the term Led by Venus, the event entailed six very generous teachers volunteering to answer questions ranging from ulture to science with a small catch; if they got the question , they would get pied in the face! For an additional fee, we d students to ask their own questions to a teacher of their , so they could pie the teachers themselves this ended up very unfortunate for Mr Khan who seemed to be everyone ’ s er one target The event was very successful generating £120 towards helping women in Afghanistan with their right to tion It was wonderful to see teachers getting involved with y and raising awareness for Amnesty International! A big you to Mr Cryer, Dr Pearce, Mr Khan, Mr Piesse, Mr Rogerssby and Ms McHenry for volunteering for the cause and to the Amnesty Society for organising the event!

On the 21st of March for our volunteering enrichment, we hosted a MenCap Fair including activities of biscuit decorating, colouring and all kinds of arts and crafts: animals made from paper plates and flowers using straws It was a great opportunity to interact with the people from MenCap whilst participating in fun activities

The biscuit-making was definitely the most popular activity however many went home with a straw paper flower made by the volunteers and a brilliant sing-along towards the end of the day This was definitely my favourite part; Mr Head supplied some background music whilst the people of MenCap drummed along to the choir singing ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘You are my Sunshine’ Some volunteers went the extra mile of accompanying the lyrics with some dance moves, much to the joy of the teachers

Overall, it was a brilliant experience and opportunity to socialise with the people of MenCap and many seemed to have enjoyed the afternoon as well, ending the afternoon with a small snack and sing-along.

THE FURSA TRUST

This is a charity which is dedicated to helping children who live in the slums of Nairobi,Kenya Due to the difficulties these children face, whether that be in a lack of role models or encouragement, many primary students dropout of school or are unable to continue their education to a level that we would assume as essential Fursa Trust helps create an environment of learning and joy

This charity is working towards a goal close to me because my dad grew up in Kenya and I have personally seen and heard of the struggle that these children face in their everyday life and how they need support to help them achieve a brighter future
