Smiling all the way through the Spring Term!
Written by Miss Nicholas
and breathe, the holidays are upon us!
What an incredible term this has been They say 'time flies when you're having fun' and nothing could be truer of this term Our students have had plenty of reasons to smile! A huge well done to the U15 Waterpolo team for being crowned National champions, a first in NHEHS' history! There have also been gold medals aplenty To name a few, the U15 Indoor Cricket team winning the London Schools County Tournament, the U13A Netball team winning the GDST Condover Hall Cup, and the Cross Country team winning the borough relays We are also proud that all our A Netball teams finished Top 3 at the County Finals
There have been a number of fun activities this term The staff v students football and netball, the Sports Relief dodgeball competition, and house sports events back in full swing These have been valuable in bringing the NHEHS sports community back together after Covid Seeing Mr Shoults with a whistle in his hand umpiring the staff v students football was a great example!
So, for whatever reason you have had a smile on your face this term from sport, I would like to say a huge thank you for being involved Have a well deserved rest this Easter The Summer Term is coming!

U12 Cricket Team take on Lord's!
Written by Manpreet Gill & Lilly Bachir
On Tuesday 25th January 2022, the NHEHS Year 7 A team got the opportunity to go to their first indoor cricket tournament at Lords
Our exciting journey began early Tuesday morning with a walk to Ealing Broadway Station, where we cheerfully got onto the Underground and immediately started nominating a captain for the team to get the momentum started. The votes were very close, but in the end Manpreet was chosen as captain to lead, support and encourage our team
We arrived at the Indoor cricket area at Lords with joyful smiles on our faces, a strong desire to perform well and a common goal of bringing home Gold for our Team & School With this passion, we started warming up As adrenaline began rushing through our bodies, we also began preparing ourselves mentally for the upcoming game Meanwhile, while waiting for our turn to play our first match, we observed our opponents carefully to understand their game, their strengths and weaknesses too This played a crucial part in our success and the end result
Our first match was against Latymer Upper School and we entered the court with a positive mindset and the aim to win, which is why we knew we had to play our very best as a team from the very beginning
In the second and third match, we also succeeded with amazing wins against Godolphin & Latymer B and Putney C We won by quite a lot of runs in each match due to spectacular batting and bowling by every player of our team and some of us hit our first fours and sixes of the Tournament
Our tactical play, good understanding of the game and strong will power helped us win all of our matches and we were through to the semi-finals against Putney High School’s A team We were all very excited and determined to do our very best to secure a place in the finals Despite the pressure, our team managed to perform exceptionally well with excellent batting and fielding again!
We faced Godolphin & Latymer A team in a thrilling final We managed to win with two runs against a very strong opponent Our perseverance and joint team efforts paid off and our team was presented with gold medals and certificates We were extremely proud of all we had achieved throughout the entire day and the result was evident, Gold for the U12 NHEHS Cricket A Team
This was a great experience for our team and a brilliant start to our cricket venture together The Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket Tournament truly helped us bonding as a team and taught us the value of supporting each other and working together as a team Our team is very proud of what we have achieved on the day and at the same time, this experience has also given us an opportunity to look into areas that we can work on to become an even stronger team to achieve more victories This was just the beginning of our journey together as a cricket team

U14 Regional Netball Tournament
On the 30th January 2021, the U14 team travelled to Rainham School, Kent, to play in the Regional National Schools’ Netball Tournament After a delayed bus ride to the venue (owing to a half-an-hour police road block on the A40!), we still arrived in plenty of time, keen to warm-up. The team were excited to play and have been training hard three times a week after winning the Middlesex National Schools Round in November to qualify for this tournament
The day started well, winning 9 - 6 against Godolphin & Latymer We then proceeded to win against Walthamstow Hall scoring 11 goals to their 5, and Cooper’s Coborn 15 - 9 Spirits were high and the processes were working In the next game we played against Sevenoaks Sevenoaks started strong, employing a zone defence which NHEHS were not expecting
Although this rattled the team a little in the first half, we came back to draw the second half, but unfortunately that led to our first loss 7 - 11
Despite this loss, we regrouped and kept our heads high Next up we had the Surrey representatives Putney After a full team performance, with excellent shooting from Imogen Hignett and Jaspreet Gill, NHEHS took the win: the final score being 11-10
Written by Morven Pearce
We continued that winning streak, beating Bancroft 16 – 7 in another team performance A top two finish to go through to Nationals was down to the last match of the day against unbeaten Wimbledon High School
Although we had a strong start, tired legs and some inconsistencies meant this match ended with a loss (7 - 17) Due to this loss, we were placed third and did not make it through to National level Despite this, we were incredibly proud of our efforts and finished 3rd in the whole of London and the South East Region
GDST Swimming Gala
Written by Daisy Self
On the 27th of January four swimming teams went to the Guildford Spectrum leisure centre to compete in the GDST swimming rally Guildford Spectrum is a great leisure centre and it was a very good choice of venue for the gala It has four pools: the leisure pool, the 25m pool, the teaching pool and the diving pool
We met at 7AM outside school for the coach trip there There were 16 GDST teams competing in this gala from as far as Shrewsbury and Portsmouth When we first arrived we all warmed up and then prepared for our races In the morning we took part in the individual race heats and 10 people, 6 from the junior school and 4 from the senior school made the finals. We all ate lu
Violet from the U11A team placed first in the 50m Backstroke and Daisy from the U14 team placed 3rd in the 50m Backstroke All the people in the finals were cheered on by the rest of the team Once the finals were completed we took part in the relays Each age category had a Medley relay team and a Freestyle relay team Everyone did very well in the relays and a number of teams placed in the top 5 In the final placement the U11A and U11B teams placed 5th and the U14 team placed 4th After the competition we travelled back to school and we were all very happy with the results we had been given Overall

U18 Hockey Team at National Schools Finals
Written by Miss Newman
The U18 team travelled to Nottingham on Sunday 6th February in the school minibus After stopping halfway to refuel on MacDonalds and Starbucks, we safely arrived at Nottingham Hockey Centre for the practice session
It was a great way to get a feel for the various pitches and get used to the layout Everyone enjoyed being able to stretch their legs after a long journey
After settling into the Travelodge, Mr Henderson drove the team to Frank & Benny's for a team dinner and strategy session Although the music was a little loud that didn't stop Mr Henderson from getting the team talk done!
An early start to the morning of the tournament, and with some concern over the frozen pitches, it wasn't the start we thought it would be! But after delaying the first round of matches by 30 minutes, the day was underway The team played fantastically throughout the day, with the support of NHEHS parents and alumna from the sidelines
Unfortunately the third/fourth playoffs did not go according to plan with a short corner awarded against the team when the final whistle had gone Despite this, the team showed grit, determination and sportsmanship throughout
Pool results:

GDST Sport Scholar Day with Mintridge Foundation
Written by Natasha Bennett, Evie Smethurst & Nicola Hewitt
On the 11th February 2022, a range of NHEHS athletes took part in the GDST Sport Scholar Day doing a range of activities to support their development in sports Natasha and Evie Yr 9 and Nicola Yr 10 told us about their experience
I (Natasha) attended the Visualisation workshop as well as strength and conditioning and athletics The Athletics workshop was run by Marilyn Okoro an 800 and 400m runner who has participated in the Olympics. She shared with us a few drills to practise technique, talking through the importance of each one We did a few running exercises followed by some dynamic movements and a plank off She then did a short Q and A where she shared some aspects into what her life was like as a professional athlete and the mental battles she has had to face One important thing I learned was how an 800-400m runner trains differently to how an 800-1500m runner would, and how by doing the shorter distances she could build up her endurance She also shared how she copes with nerves before racing and her nutrition. The next workshop I went to was a strength and conditioning one In this workshop I got to talk to other girls from GDST schools as we practised exercises to prevent injury using stretch bands and jumping. I learned that by using resistance bands to stretch your shoulder and leg muscles, you can prevent injury
As well as Natasha, I (Nicola) also attended the athletics session as well as a swimming workshop run by the swimmer, Jazz Carlin who competed in endurance freestyle events at the Olympics representing Great Britain. In the session, we focused on the stroke, freestyle and she broke down the key movements of this stroke We experimented with many drills to have a better understanding of the stroke. This session was very interactive and interesting. My final workshop was also the self visualisation which was run by the British archer, Danielle Brown She talked through the mental challenges in which an athlete will face and how to overcome these Danielle Brown gave us many techniques to get rid of the self doubt and anxiety in which athletes face, whether it is before a competition or the disappointment afterwards. She taught us that by self visualising yourself succeeding, it brings more positivity to the mind
On the day, I (Evie) Attended 3 workshops run by highly trained professionals with my peers The first workshop I attended was a Nutrition workshop run by Jodie Redgrave, she taught us how to ensure your body is fueled whether training, competing or resting Jodie Redgrave works with the Mens GB Goalball team I also attended a workshop on women's bodies and how to train without problems We were given ways to deal with change and pain in our bodies.
Overall, we all found the day incredibly inspiring and had a lot of fun. It was so nice to see other girls our age from other GDST schools, so passionate about sport and to have athlete's give advice and tips to help us improve our own sports.

U13 Hockey team at the Greater London Tournament
Written by Olivia Bebb
On the 8th March, we excitedly boarded the coach to take us to the U13 Greater London hockey tournament Loads of schools were there; many of us saw friends from other schools that we recognised
In total we played 5 games throughout the day In the pool games, we won our first game against JAGS B 3-1 and followed this up in our second game against Surbiton B with a 3-1 win With a closer game against Kingston, we luckily won 1-0 and managed to make it into the semi-finals
After finishing first in our pool, we came up against Tiffin, who finished second in their pool It was a close match! At the end of time it was 1-1 Which led to penalties It was tense, but we made it to victory, winning 2-1 on sudden death penalties!
As we prepared for our place in the finals, we were all ready to play our best Highgate were strong opponents and after a tough match, at full time it was 1-1 The game went to penalties and although we lost, we came home proud to have come second place in our tier and wearing our shiny, silver medals
U13 Cricket Team at Lady Taverner's
Written by Minna Williams & Georgia Stevens
We travelled to William Perkins School to take part in the area tournament for the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket Competition, which is a National Competition This was the Local Middlesex Round, consisting of the outer Middlesex Borough's of Barnet, Ealing, Richmond, Hillingdon, and Brent We were the winners from the Ealing Borough
With an experienced team, we warmed-up with confidence doing various drills Many of us play hardball cricket, so it takes us a little while to get used to the indoor softball
In the first game we played St Michael s School, who in the warm-up we could see had some confident batters We won the toss and chose to field first Georgia (captain) took to bowl first and got a wicket on her first ball! One of their strongest batters was out! Strong bowling from Minna, Manpreet and Lilly meant we kept the opposition to an extremely low running score they got 14 from 6 overs! Annika and Elizabeth started in the bat as they are a very familiar pairing Elizabeth was run out in the second over, and so Manpreet joined Annika in the pairing With some clever plays into the corners, it didn’t take long for NHEHS to get a score of 15 and win the match First win – complete!
In the next game we faced Waldegrave Girls School We knew they had some club players from Bushy Park and so again focused for a hard match This time we opted to bat first and put out a healthy score of 55 runs Georgia and Giuliana were a pair to recon with and although some balls pitched high from Giuliana, luck was on our side, and we were not caught Onto fielding and again Georgia caught out the batsman on her first bowl! Further batsman fell, a catch for Roxy off Kitty’s bowl, two catches from Kitty and Elizabeth from Minna’s bowling and then a player run out in the last over We finished the match with another strong win 55- 22
Game 3 and we were up against Vyners Winning the toss, we opted to field first and this time shared out the bowling with 6 different players taking an over Wickets fell including a superb double bowl and catch from Elizabeth The opposition only scored 12 after the 6 overs Onto our turn and it didn’t even take two overs for Carys and Roxy to get 13 and seal the win
The final game of the tournament meant we were up against Kingsbury High School We lost the toss and were allocated to bat first This time Minna and Manpreet started the batting order, not getting the chance to bat yet this tournament They played clever shots and soon were scoring 2 and 3 runs off each ball Lilly then came into the mix aiding the batting total 64 put on the board for our team Georgia opened the bowling and took three outs from four balls, two bowled wickets and one run out! The opposition though then started to find their feet and struck some impressive shots Although we could feel the pressure was mounting, we kept our composure and managed to get two further outs in the final two overs Final score 27 to Kingsbury High and 64 to us!
Owing to this, we are excited to make the Middlesex Finals in April!

GDST Condover Hall Netball Tournament
Written by Imogen Hignett, Carys Baker & Guusje Vroegop
This year the U13 A team were very successful at Condover Hall. On Saturday we played 8 tough matches against various GDST schools and managed to win all of them and get through to the Cup playoffs on Sunday
In the Cup playoffs, we played three hard matches and got through to the semi-finals! Then, we played against Putney High’s B team; it was a close and difficult match but we managed to get the victory! This got us into the finals in which we played Portsmouth High School; they were our hardest match but we still won with a score of 86!
Overall, the U13 A team played really well and we were proud!
B Team Report
Throughout the very exciting residential trip to Condover Hall Shropshire, the NHEHS B team performed exceptionally On the first day (Saturday 7th) we played 9 matches against various schools Unfortunately, we missed out on the cup section by only 1 place, but we were happy with our results and qualified for the plate section!
The following day (Sunday) we played 3 matches and we won all of those matches Therefore, we qualified for the quarter-finals which we won and then the semi-finals which we also won, getting us into the final The final was against Blackheath, who we had lost against on Saturday, so we tried to keep positive The quarters were played and at the end of the last quarter we were tied All of us were nervous to play the additional 2 minutes of extra time. Within the first minute of the extra time we had managed to turn over a centre and get a goal Now, it was our centre pass, Minna stepped into the circle and off we went We only had about 30 seconds left and we played cleanly and managed to get it into the circle, where I shot the finishing goal for the B’s The whistle blew and there were tears of joy in all of our eyes- we had won the plate section!
C Team Report
Condover Hall has been one of the big highlights of the year. There were lots of activities and opportunities to show off our skills We won all of our pool games, qualifying for the cup playoffs, which we are super proud of, seeing as we played against other schools' A and B teams
Some of the highlights were the activities, including climbing that were available on site We were able to play a whole lot of matches and work as a team We had an amazing team mascot (a squeaky bird) which cheered us on the whole way All in all it was a great experience and we would love to do it again

U15 cricketers move onto the next round
Written by Miss Nicholas
On Tuesday 22nd March the U15 Cricket Team (a mix of the best selected players from Year 9 and 10 teams) headed to Lord’s Cricket Ground to play in the London Schools Lady Taverners Schools Indoor Cricket 1st Round If schools win this they then head to a London/ Middlesex/ Surrey Regional Round, then a South East of England Regional Round and then National Finals, previously held at Lord’s
The team were drawn in Pool A First match of the day saw them take on Godolphin & Latymer’s B Team After strong fielding, the team managed the victory A strong start for the NHEHS team!
Next NHEHS were up against St Paul’s Girls School A Team In just over two overs Sofia and Jaspreet had made 36 runs and NHEHS took the game
Next up NHEHS faced Lady Margaret and NHEHS again won the toss, but this time opted to bat first NHEHS scored 72 runs and kept Lady Margaret to 45
Final game of the pool saw NHEHS take on Putney High School U14 They were also yet to drop a match in the pool round and so this was a head to head to decide who would get through as top in the pool, so giving the team an easier semi-final draw On the second to last ball of the game NHEHS managed to score 67 to win- a deep breath out for the team, coaches and spectators alike!
Semi-finals saw NHEHS drawn against Putney’s U15 team Owing to the tight last match, NHEHS came out ready! Putney were all out for 29, so NHEHS needed 30 to win It took just 3 and a half overs, with some excellent batting from Sofia, Jaspreet and Dana for NHEHS to score 30.
In the final NHEHS were drawn against old rivals Godolphin & Latymer A Team NHEHS had faced G&L in the final at U12 in the competition with success (2019), but had lost to them by just one run in the U13 Final back in 2020 A strong team talk from the coaches meant they went into the final a little nervous, but determined and with confidence With 5 outs and Dana having to retire, NHEHS finished with an impressive 67 runs Catches, wickets and forced run outs meant NHEHS got 7 outs and after the 8 overs, G&L had scored 44 NHEHS had taken the win!
A huge achievement for a team who have missed out before and we can’t wait to see the team at the next round of this competition on the 28th April!
Ibstock Hockey Tounaments
The week of the 7th March, the annual Ibstock hockey tournaments took place, with us taking U12, U14, U15 and U18 teams to the 7-a-side tournament
All of the teams enjoyed the tournament, playing a variety of schools that are not normally on our fixture list And for the older teams, they had not played 7-a-side hockey for several years!
A mixed bag of results, with U12's finishing 7th, U14's finishing 3rd, and both the U15's and U18's finishing 4th
It is always a wonderful tournament to play to end off the hockey season - all NHEHS teams had a blast!

U12 Middlesex Schools Finals
Written by Meredith Jarratt & Manpreet Gill
On Tuesday 15th March, NHEHS Year 7’s Netball A team got the opportunity to go to the netball tournament they had been training towards All the excitement leading up to the tournament began when the team was selected
Once the day had come, we were all prepared and excited to give it all we had Our journey began from the second we got onto the bus – we arrived with smiles on our faces and were all ready to play!
After a good warm up, the tournament began with our first match against St Helen’s With a strong performance from the whole team, we pulled out a winning margin of 10 goals The final score was 11-1 to NHEHS which left our confidence high as this was a great start for the team We then gathered around to talk about how we could improve in our games to come In our next match against Orleans Park, we managed to pull out a great win of 16 – 1 to us. After that, we took a few deep breaths and waited for the next match to come As the bell rang, we started our next game against St Benedict’s, who were a very good team, but once again due to our great defence, attack and movement in the shooting circle, we once again managed to come out winners, this time 11-4
We were all very pleased with the results and the day so far, but now we were due to play SHHS We all focused on how we could play our best game as a team The game began and was by far the most intense match we had played so far At half time, the scores were tied 6-6 With only a few minutes left, we did everything we could to secure a win Thanks to our defence, we managed to intercept one of their balls and took that straight to goal As the whistle blew, we had won the match by 9-6 With happy faces, we took a break before playing our next team
Next, we played Channing, which was again a clear win with 112 to us After this match, we rested, because our next match would be tricky to win We were playing Godolphin and Latymer, whom we had played in the past, and therefore knew we were in for a hard match We all closely marked our opposition to reduce the amount of time they got the ball We all pushed really hard and after a very good match from both sides, we narrowly won the match 5-3
We were all elated as winning that match meant we had a guaranteed place in the semi-finals, however, this didn’t stop us from playing very strongly in the last match of our pool We were playing Francis Holland who made a great start in the first half, but we managed to overtake their score making us the winners of that match by 6-2 to
In the semi-final, we had to play LEH, whom we had also played in the past It proved to be a very tight game with just a two goal difference at half time The two goal difference stayed the same throughout the match which meant we unfortunately lost the match with a final score of 7-9
After the match we felt both disappointed but happy We sat down and began talking about things we did well and things we would like to improve in the future. This was a great way to end our season of netball in year 7. We came joint third best in the county at netball
Throughout the season, our team has had some amazing wins and achievements Starting from our first ever tournament as a team where we came second, losing the finals to Surbiton, to another tournament where we re-played Surbiton in the finals and won, winning a gold medal We have had many successes as well as a few losses We have improved as a team over the season, having learnt how to work, collaborate and play for each other as a team We cannot wait for next year ’ s season where our journey as a team will continue
We would like to thank all the teachers who made this netball season possible and for all the opportunities we had to play and do the things we enjoy

Cross Country success
Written by Minna Williams
In bright sunshine, on Wednesday 23rd March, girls from Year713 competed in the Ealing Borough Team Cross Country Relay Finals The conditions couldn’t have been better and the course was, for the first time this year, dry, firm and free of mud! There were three teams with one girl from Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11+, and each ran 15km Everyone was really supportive of each other
My team had a good start and by the second leg we were in the lead It was super exciting watching everyone run and fantastic when Jasmine came in first, helping our team win the whole race
Extra medals were also awarded to the fastest runners (Emma Yr 9, Eadi Yr 10 and me Yr 8) All of the Notting Hill girls in every team did really well and showed excellent determination It was a really fun afternoon and we are all looking forward to the next one
U15 & U18 Waterpolo teams at Nationals
Written by Zara Dannatt
We were thrilled to have both our U15 and U18 Waterpolo teams make the National Finals which took place on March 23rd at Northampton Boys’ School
Leading up to the National Finals, the majority of the team have trained outside of school either with Penguins Waterpolo Club or Ealing Waterpolo Club, where they are coached by Rumen Kurtev, who is a very experienced and knowledgeable coach We were lucky enough to be able to continue this coaching throughout all of our matches He was able to give tactics and substitutions accordingly to help us maximise our team’s potential
Our U15 team was taking part in the Intermediate Girls (Years 710) National Championship, having qualified previously by coming top in the qualifiers competition
The U15 team was first drawn into Pool Group A with King’s High School and Bolton School for Girls with matches consisting of two 5 minute halves with stops for goals and penalties We got off to a flying start with a 7-2 win against King’s High School before playing a very tight match against Bolton School for Girls with the final score being a draw (2-2) This meant we qualified as pool group winners for the semi-finals where we were up against St Bede’s We took the win 7-0 which meant we qualified for the final – a re-match against Bolton! It was another close-run game with NHEHS edging it 5-4, and crowned U15 National Waterpolo champions!
Sport Science talk with Dr Keay
We were fortunate enough to have to have NHEHS alumna Dr Nicky Keay, an endocrinologist, come give a talk to Year 7-13 students about optimising health and performance in female athletes
45 students attended the talk, and found out about the three key areas (sleep, nutrition and menstrual cycle) that female athletes should be focusing on, in order to achieve optimal performance and recovery
There was no rest for some of our team though as Zara, Zoe, Rosie, Nicola, Amelia, Jaspreet and Evie all went straight into playing for the U18 team in their competition! Unfortunately, Ellie Ritchie broke her toe just before the start of the U18 championship, so had to go to hospital instead of playing Our U18 team finished sixth in a very tight competition, but were delighted to have made National Finals again We will miss the inspirational leadership of the Year 13's at the pool, although we have a very bright future ahead!

On Friday 18th March, NHEHS celebrated Sports Relief, a Comic Relief initiative, by hosting a dodgeball competition
The round robin tournament took place in the morning on the astro, with 8 teams (ranging from Year 7 to Year 13) taking to the courts
It was great to see so many students showing their competitive side, along with dressing up as a team - there were some creative and wacky outfits!
The playoffs took place at lunchtime, with Wildcats!, Balls of Steel, XY Baby and The Unstoppables all qualifying The final saw Wildcats! take on Balls of Steel After a hard fought match, Balls of Steel were victorious!
Then it was time for the much anticipated Staff versus Winners match Although tightly contested at times, after a few quick strikes, the staff team managed to knock all of Balls of Steel out, taking the victory!
Along with the dodgeball competition, we also had a mufti day, with the theme of Retro Sports Clothing
We raised £207 for Comic Relief - well done and thank you to all those who supported this great day!
Middlesex Schools Finals - Overview
