SALATA
OUT TO LUNCH // BY: ANGELA CLACK
18
Just because you don’t have a lot of time for lunch doesn’t mean you have to settle for something ordinary. Not every day. You’ve no doubt had your fair share of busy days where the best you can do is make it down to the company cafeteria. Or perhaps you’ve settled for reheating yesterday’s dinner, or if you’re committed to being well behaved, a Lean Cuisine. Every once in a while though, you deserve to get out of the office at midday. Here are four restaurants that can help you turn your lunch hour into a happy hour. Tarka Indian Kitchen transports diners into a flavorful tour of India. You know you’re in for a treat when you enter the restaurant, like an authentic Indian kitchen, and are greeted with enticing aromas that make it difficult to decide what to choose from their extensive menu. Although my spirit is adventurous, I sometimes limit my selections to those items that I can actually pronounce. What I can pronounce and love is naan. Like Oprah, I love bread and Tarka’s naan does not disappoint. My recommendation for the less adventurous that want a tasty treat: the lamb kabobs. Their kabobs, which they also have in a chicken variety, are served with vegetables and wonderful basmati rice. You’ll also love their curries; there are five to choose from. Don’t visit without

trying a freshly whipped lassi. It’s a yogurt based treat with pureed fruit. What you can count on from Tarka is a satisfying, highly seasoned meal that will have you coming back for more. Zoe’s Kitchen resonates with me because I love the Mediterranean. Zoe’s promotes a healthy, happy lifestyle with menu items prepared, in a healthy way, from fresh ingredients. Nothing at Zoe’s is fried. Nothing. Their website touts their commitment to use fresh produce, lean proteins and olive oils. You feel good (earthy good) about eating at Zoe’s. You’ll also feel satisfied. Portions are generous, the menu is extensive and the selections tasty. My favorites are the Quinoa Salad and the Gruben, their take on a Ruben made with grilled turkey on rye. It’s worth the trip just to get their hummus and I’ve gone in just for a bottle of their Greek salad dressing. Another plus: Zoe’s has a cool app that offers rewards when you scan your receipt. Presentation matters to me almost as much as taste, and Picnikins Patio Café is a hit on both fronts. The lunch menu offers a variety of sandwiches (gourmet and classic), soups and salads. You’ll appreciate the minimalist environment and the imaginative way that they plate. They make a beautiful Greek salad, and an excellent roast beef sandwich aptly called “The Fabulous” that expertly marries sweet red onions, cream cheese and horseradish. What I have not tried, but intend to
on my next visit, is their Lemon Posset, a British dessert served with ginger crisps. The restaurant transforms from a casual lunch destination to a chic dinner spot. The dinner menu includes pork chops, mushroom and leek meatloaf, salmon piccata and chicken marsala. When I was first introduced to Salata, it was described to me as Subway, but for salad. That’s so wrong. It’s head and shoulders above a Subway. The great advantage of Salata is that they are completely customizable. It’s a delightful experience for folks like me who want what they want the way they want it. Salad lovers would be hard pressed to come up with a topping or salad dressing that Salata doesn’t have. Salata boasts 50 different toppings including several proteins, soups, a variety of breads, cookies and brownies and flavored teas. Be warned, if you’re going to get in that line during the lunch rush, you do need to know what you want. The line can get really long, so the time spent pondering whether you want to add jicama or not may be too much to bear for the patrons behind you. A great plus of Salata is that their menu fully discloses calories. If you plan ahead you can know exactly the calorie count of your salad. And, you can place your order online so that it’s ready when you get there. If you’re going to get away from the office, make your venture out an adventure. Visit one of these special restaurants. You’re sure to return to the office refreshed and ready to tackle your responsibilities. ■ KABOBS

Your vision is our family’s passion and we sincerely appreciate the opportunity to earn your trust.” According to one client testimonial, they did just that: “Every single Parrish employee we encountered was positive, helpful, extremely polite, and genuinely friendly and demonstrated a “can-do” attitude. Parrish & Co., in my estimation is in very capable hands. Following the conclusion of our total kitchen makeover, we are lightyears beyond delighted with the design and the results.” Kelly Parrish Walker, Vice President of Marketing, explains that today’s clients are very savvy when it comes to styles and trends. “The proliferations of design websites like Houzz and Pinterest, and television programs [shown on] HGTV provide a lot of ideas about how to create the home of your dreams. Our job is to turn that dream into reality taking into consideration functionality and family needs. “Clients are encouraged to bring in pictures of their ideas when they meet with the designer. After taking into account all the factors involved, including budget requirements, clients are provided with dimensional line drawings to see exactly how their project will look. Ideally, Parrish wants to operate as a concierge service; at the client’s

degree of ownership in the finished product is virtually unheard of in this marketplace. This is what “value-added is all about and it is significant.” to the kitchen or bath market. Kitchen design has become one of the most important parts of home products industry. This room is no longer just functional but part of the overall “design statement” of the home. Because of the wide array of home products Parrish offers, it’s a challenge to describe the innovations that are available to make that statement. Open concept kitchens make the kitchen a gathering place for family and friends and often the center of the home. Following the open layout trend, cabinets are losing their doors and opening up for displaying cookware and dishes as art. “Transitional is the

assistance from initial idea to completed project satisfaction. An example of that type of service is related by a previous client: “The 11-year-old home we purchased required a kitchen makeover that we knew would require a professional kitchen designer; Parrish & Co. was recommended by an architectural firm. From the first meeting, it quickly became apparent that we were in the hands of an experienced professional who really listened to our input and who consistently articulated an understanding of that input both verbally and in the design. After the final design was approved, she made a point of coming out to check on the progress of the work and to inspect the finished results. That the individual responsible for the design would take such a high
new traditional”, says Kelly Parrish Walker. “Floating shelves are popular and fit well into the transitional and modern designs we see more of these days.” In the last 40 years, cabinetry, appliances, accessories and materials have changed dramatically for the better. Operational performance, such as smooth drawer glides, sturdier joinery techniques, such as dovetail, and soft close drawers are important considerations when choosing cabinetry. Besides innovation in functionality, manufacturers are making aesthetical improvements with a range of possibilities for cabinet door inserts from glass and metal to fabric. Paint is hot again, rather than wood tones, especially in shades
of white and grey. Homeowners are painting island cabinets in a different but coordinating shade with the surrounding cabinetry. “At Parrish we carry the very best in these product enhancements,” says Walker. “The choices can get overwhelming. Our certified kitchen designers assist clients in choosing the right aesthetical touches for that “design statement” as well as the functions best suited to the family’s lifestyle needs. Appliance advancements have been made to coordinate with the open concept look of today’s homes. Most are made to blend into the cabinetry so as not to disturb that transitional flow. Appliances are extremely low profile without visible controls or handles. Many manufacturers are launching artistic lines that

One kitchen area we haven’t talked about is the outdoor kitchen. This popular home enhancement is the perfect place to relax and enjoy entertaining friends and family. A TYPICAL TEAR-OUT FOR CVF HOMES IN HISTORICAL LAVACA/KING WILLIAM HOMES TURNED INTO A CLASSIC ENERGY EFFICIENT BATH LUXURIOUS ENOUGH FOR ANYONE. WHAT’S MORE, SAVING EXISTING HISTORICAL STRUCTURES AND REVISING THEM TO SUIT TODAY’S LIVING IS THE MOST SUSTAINABLE YOU CAN GET.
detector faucets and lights are more sustainable and further lower utility bills. It's also important to repair any leaky faucets or toilets for maximum energy/water efficiency. Toilets in the 30s used gallons of water per flush (GPF); today’s most efficient models use from 1 to 0.8GPF. Fernandez recommends gas tankless water heaters. If the hot water runs are longer than 20 feet, install an on-demand or programmable hot water recirculation system. In the kitchen, Fernandez prefers FSC certified wood formaldehyde-free cabinets, low- or zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints and sealer that have the Green Seal or are

n the 1930s, green was the color of choice in luxury bathrooms and kitchens, and homeowners weren't thinking green in terms of sustainability. However, over the past few years, builder/designer Juan Fernandez of Casas Verdes Fernandez Construction has been restoring historic homes in the near-downtown King William and Lavaca areas; these neighborhoods are among San Antonio's oldest, dating back to the early 1900s. German and Mexican middle class working families built sturdy homes in the area, but the neighborhood changed in 1968 when many of the homes were moved to HemisFair Park and were re-purposed for exhibits and restaurants. Now, 85 years later, Fernandez has expanded the green factor, in some cases with recycled glass tiles in the kitchen and bath, but mostly by adding sustainable features to reduce water and energy usage. These renovations enable the homes to meet or surpass local and national green standards while being restored cosmetically to their original charm. Fernandez has also added new structures designed to meet Historic District standards, including front porches and driveways. Passionate about historical preservation and sustainability, Fernandez has combined the two in many of his projects, including a construction that received the 2012 San Antonio Green Building award for its sustainability. It includes a unique grey water system recycling water from the bathroom shower and sink to all toilets; tankless water heaters strategically placed for instant hot water; solar panels (invisible from the street) to meet neighborhood standards and electric vehicle recharge systems. “Kitchens and baths use the most water and energy so those rooms need special attention,” Fernandez explains. “In the early days, sustainability was not a common concern, so retrofitting systems in these rooms has been an exciting challenge.” For new construction or big remodels, Fernandez suggests installing short hot water runs (20feet or less) from the water heater, which is more energy efficient and user friendly in the kitchen and bath. Faucets and showerheads should be 2GPM to 1.5GPM (gallons per minute). Motion
A 1930s EAT-IN KITCHEN USUALLY HAD A SEPARATE DINING ROOM. GAS COOKING AND SOME OF THE FIRST REFRIGERATORS WERE INTRODUCED. WATER, GAS AND ELECTRIC WERE INEXPENSIVE AND THE MAIN ENERGY SOURCE WAS WOOD. THERE WAS A TOUCH OF GREEN IN MOST ROOMS OF THE PERIOD. A 1930s LUXURY BATH INCLUDED EVERYTHING TODAY’S BATH HAS AND ALL GREEN. FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF THE HENRY FORD
Green Guard Certified. Stainless steel, high quality quartz or recycled materials are his choice for sustainable countertops that are non-porous and scratch resistant. Energy Star appliances and updated lighting complete the green kitchen picture. Energy efficient lighting is important in every room of the house. Choosing light bulbs can be confusing, but the right ones will provide both better light and reduced utility costs. Compound Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) take a little more time to turn on but use about 30% less energy and are now available in a variety of warm-to-bright tones, last up to fifteen times longer than standard incandescent bulbs, are reasonably priced, but are not dimmable. They should be considered to brighten up every room in the house for a variety of moods from warm to cool. Also available are Tungsten Halogen bulbs, which are between standards bulbs and CFLs in terms of energy usage. Tungsten Halogen bulbs use approximately 70% of the energy that standard bulbs do, are dimmable, and light up instantly. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) could become the most energy efficient bulb lasting longer but are more expensive ($40-$100). Since they contain no mercury, LEDs can be thrown in the trash. Overall, adding any or all of these sustainable green features will help to make your kitchen and bath not only more eco-friendly but more luxurious because they represent the green generation incorporating green in their high style of living. ■ JULY//AUGUST 2016 NHOME /

Designing the right children’s playroom can be a tricky affair at times. There are several different ingredients that you need to get right to create the perfect playroom. Obviously, every parent wishes to create that magical setting that they can proudly call the world’s best playroom. The playroom is a lot more than just a place where kids spend a few hours; it is a space that allows them to tap into their energy, creativity and imagination. Playrooms are full of activity, but playroom decor should also encourage quiet time. Whether you wish to create a dedicated playroom space, or do double duty with a multipurpose room, encourage quiet time with a reading nook complete with space-saving playroom decor. Storage benches or window seats can help maximize space, while beanbags, cushions, and pillows can be stacked away when not in use. There are a variety of themes that you can choose for the playroom. These can vary from a cool nautical approach to a Disney astronautthemed room that your little one would adore. Rocky Rocket is the perfect armchair for kids to play with their toys. Connecting two different eras, parents can see Tintin references at this piece; and their kids can be inspired on “Toy Story” the movie, especially by “Buzz Lightyear” and his belief of being a true space ranger, protecting the Universe CIRCU built this piece for the little astronauts. Kids are passionate about adventure and superheroes, so CIRCU captures that essence and plant it in their souls. Rocky Rocket is a masterpiece all made by hand. uying and selling property can be an overwhelming task. There are forms, financial considerations, inspections, legal implications and so much more that goes into a real estate transaction. But a trained and professional REALTOR® can make this daunting task simple because they have the experience required to navigate the process. In fact, each year, nearly 10,000 REALTORS® in San Antonio and surrounding areas help thousands of prospective buyers and sellers meet their real estate goals. This year is particularly notable for REALTORS®; 2016 marks their 100th anniversary. While real estate agents have been around since before 1916, the Code of Ethics to which REALTORS® must adhere was not introduced until 1913. Two years later, Minnesota practitioner Charles Chadbourn suggested that agents who adhered to the highest ethical standards should have a professional title of their own. By 1916, the term “REALTOR®” was adopted by the National Association of REALTORS®, paying Chadbourn one dollar for the rights. The San Antonio Board of REALTORS® (SABOR) quickly adopted the term, setting in motion an industry that would forever change the economic landscape of the San Antonio and surrounding areas. When the term was adopted, the city was still decades away from the tourism boom brought on by the addition of the Riverwalk. The military presence, so central to the city today, was still in its infant stages, and the population was less than a tenth of what it is now. As these industries developed, so did the need for housing as more and more people and businesses relocated here. REALTORS® often provided the first impression to newcomers, explaining the perks of living in the area and connecting them to proper-
ties they could call home. As time marched on, home prices and styles changed to reflect the times and tastes of each generation and REALTORS® have continually worked closely with their clients; whether they were families looking for their next suburban home or military personnel needing short-term housing. By providing the care these individuals and families needed during a time of transition, and by keeping the supply and demand steady, the local economy continued to grow and people continued to buy and sell with confidence. Not only have REALTORS® consistently provided expert assistance to their clients over the past 100 years, but they have also played a crucial role in protecting private property rights. Even as early as the 1920s, REALTORS® were participating in local civic organizations, City Council and city commissions to maintain a finger on the pulse of the developments happening in the region and offering a voice for home buyers and sellers when it came to decisions affecting them. More recently, in the 1990s, REALTORS® were instrumental in requiring sellers of residential property to fill out property disclosure forms, both protecting the buyer and those in the real estate industry. In addition, REALTORS® have worked to keep sales taxes down on real estate transactions, established a statute requiring the licensing of all mortgage brokers, and promoted HOA reform bills to grant homeowners more rights, just to name a few accomplishments. Today, the San Antonio area is fueled by continued job growth and affordable housing compared to other large metropolitan areas around the state and country. These factors combined with the warm weather and vibrant cultures make San Antonio an ideal place to call home. REALTORS® diligently market the advantages of this beautiful area to prospective buyers and provide a welcome face to those moving here, and it is these essential actions that continue to support the staggering growth of our city. ■ JULY//AUGUST 2016 NHOME /
