or something to be “everything” that something must do everything right. For a restaurant, that means they have to be close to perfect. It’s unusual for a restaurant to do everything well. J Prime is a rare exception. Excellence comes through in J Prime’s perfectly prepared and beautifully presented cuisine. The service quality comes through right from the start. Coming through the door you immediately understand that you’ve entered an atmosphere created by someone committed to elevating the dining experience. At J Prime, they want you to know that they’re special and that they believe you’re special too. I love the look of the restaurant. Its elegant, modern décor hints at the experience to come. But for the tasteful music, it’s quiet. You don’t hear the commotion that we sometimes accept as proof that the team in the kitchen or at the bar is working really hard. It’s as if they’ve gone to lengths to keep what's happening backstage from infringing on what the patrons have in mind for their evening. I don’t know about you, but I want to hear myself talk. I want to hear what my dining companions are saying. Is that so much to ask?

The great service begins when you approach the hostess stand. It is there that I pull a stunt for which I am somewhat ashamed but not so embarrassed that I’m willing to change. When the host asks, “How many in your party?” I always answer for the group and I add one to the number of people with me. Here’s why. I have this thing about my handbag in restaurants. I cannot dangle my bag on the arm of my chair. I will not use one of those $10 bedazzled purse hooks from Charming Charlie. I will not pay $110 for a sterling silver purse hook from Brighton so that my handbag ends up hanging oddly from the corner of the table during the entire meal. I’m just not able to do it. So, I put my handbag in the “extra” chair. My stunt is not necessary at J Prime. At J Prime, they’ve thought of just about everything. They have a handbag valet stand. Problem solved. That thoughtfulness comes through in the attentiveness of the wait staff. They are in a class by themselves, excellent in their knowledge, their recommendations, and their focus. It is a pleasure to be cared for by the J Prime team. Restaurants are about food so I'll get to the point. Selection matters. I would characterize J Prime as a steakhouse but that’s almost not fair to them because they are so much more. They’ve added Brazilian elements that raise the bar for flavor. The menu includes just what you’d expect from a great steakhouse, while also including tidbits and sauces you’d not expect that bring the Brazilian influence to life, such as chimichurri and pickled onions to color your meal as you see fit. For steak lovers, the traditional cuts are available including my favorite, the rib eye. They also have a Tomahawk rib eye that’s been aged for 40 days and an Akaushi filet. If you and your partner are both carnivores, they offer a Prime Porterhouse dinner for two with soup or salad and a side per person. What you can expect when you get a steak at J Prime is that it will be perfectly cooked and served sizzling on a 500 degree plate. There’s MARCH//APRIL 2017 NHOME /

a very nice selection of add ons, including blue cheese, béarnaise, seared foie gras and fresh seasonal truffle. Entrees include sea bass, lobster tail, ahi tuna and stuffed chicken breast, king crab legs and salmon. Their signature charcuterie and cheese board is a delight. They’ve both cold appetizers and hot appetizers including some really fantastic choices such as octopus ceviche, russian caviar and a hot appetizer that I really enjoyed, a fondue with apple, hazelnut and shrimp served with great grilled bread. If you start your meal with a salad, try their Caesar. They include a little red leaf and baby heirloom tomatoes along with herbed croutons and shaved parmesan. You’ll also discover capers and fried anchovies. The list of sides is extensive. You won’t find these two on the online menu, but we loved their seafood mac and cheese and the apricot glazed carrots. They seem to be perfecting and introducing new items to the menu. J Prime boast about an extensive wine selection. I’ve not indulged beyond their house cabernet, my “go to” and a cocktail or two. They have a gorgeous liquor trolley and wine enthusiasts can rent one of their lockers which are on full display. With J Prime, it’s the little things like the bread basket that's more than just basic fresh baked bread. They’ve done something with their dinner rolls that’s made them addictive. They are better than good. There's a nostalgia to them. Seriously, if you can imagine the “from scratch” roll that mom or grandma made for you as a child, you’ll come close to the wonder that is J Prime bread. To taste a dinner roll there is to be transported back to a enchanting time when mom or grandma cared enough to make bread. Who does that now? No one. Commingled with the rolls are these small balls of cheese bread. For kicks, they include just three of these exquisite balls so that a party of two (not counting the handbag) are sure to squabble over the extra. But wait, just as the anxiety begins to build here comes a member of the with staff the server with another basket. Dessert is on par with the rest of the J Prime experience. They are pretty and tasty. They offer bananas Foster, tableside, along with crepes suzette. Or, you can choose a classic cheesecake or apple pie or crème brulee. I tried and loved a tiramisu ice cream sundae. Or choose to end your dining experience with an espresso, cappuccino or affogatto. J Prime is everything. You deserve to go, to be treated well and to enjoy an exquisite meal. Visit J Prime for dinner, happy hour or enjoy their beautiful Sunday brunch. ■

San Marcos Iron Doors IRON AND CANTERA – THE PERFECT MATCH // BY: BONNIE HUDSON // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS

Artisan Creations for Your Home

San Marcos Iron Doors is a family owned business with three locations in San Antonio and one in San Marcos. Spanning three generations, owner Marco Soto, his grandfather and his father are named Marco or Marcos and all share the same birthday, which falls on the anniversary of Saint Mark’s feast day. Marco Soto is a trained mechanical engineer specializing in materials analysis and structural engineering. As a hands-on guy, he knows all the processes used in his business, from creation to installation, ensuring that his artisans and specialists are the best in their area of expertise. Says Soto, “We are a proud family business focused on quality craftsmanship and run by people who are not only experts in their field, but committed to providing our clients with the elegance, beauty and service they deserve.” San Marcos Iron Doors is the award winning premier provider of iron creations. Working directly with leading architects, builders and designers, their products grace prestigious homes and buildings not only in the San Antonio area, but throughout Texas and the United States. The company’s creations include custom iron doors, fences and gates, light fixtures, sculptures, fireplace screens, wine cellars, and wall art. Each division has its own set of specialists.

Cantera Stone

With their focus on enhancing the look of residential and commercial buildings, San Marcos Iron Doors is not just about iron work. It’s about stone work – cantera stone – to be exact. Cantera stone is a quarried, volcanic rock that is mined exclusively in various regions of Mexico and Central America. Its properties are unique, in that it offers color, texture, durability, and a softness that allows for detailed carving and cutting. A one-of-a-kind cantera stone accent not only makes an artistic statement, it makes your home uniquely yours. From columns, fireplaces, and balustrades to statues, fountains and more, each stone creation is hand-crafted one at a time, and the possibilities

are endless. Interiors, exteriors and landscapes can be greatly enriched with stone. San Marcos Iron Doors fabricates cantera stone for residential and custom homes as well as commercial applications. They carry an extensive variety of architectural styles, such as Tuscan, Doric, Mediterranean, Colonial, Greco-Roman and even Gothic. The San Marcos artisans take great pride in fabricating pieces that give any project a natural, elegant touch, thereby creating an evocative remembrance of ancient cultures. Cantera stone is available in a rich blend of color selections. Since it is a natural stone, the colors will always be distinctive and special, making it a unique and one of a kind piece of art for your home or business. For example, cantera stone fireplaces add a warm ambiance to a room and a stunning focal point. Adding entry surround molding to your doors and windows can completely change the style of your home. Columns can be placed on porches, baluster rails added to stairs or balconies, and indoor/ outdoor fountains can be installed. All of these additions will add a touch of elegance to your exterior or interior. With the preponderance of outdoor living spaces in the San Antonio area, landscapes become extremely important to the overall ambiance of a home. Carved stone cantera fountains are a unique element to luxurious outdoor design. Cantera fountains are custom designed to be used as outdoor fountains, stone wall fountains, and indoor water features. Make a patio statement

32

/ NHOME MARCH//APRIL 2017

while enjoying the artistry of a water feature in your home. Many styles of cantera fountains can be created, whether it’s a fullscale, stand-alone fountain or a smaller wall fountain. elocating or buying a second home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, is easier than one would think. With multiple airlines offering direct flights from major Texas airports, residents of the Lone Star State are packing their bags and investing in Cabo real estate now more than ever. Beautiful weather and unspoiled beaches, paired with the red hot real estate market and pre-recession sales rapidity, make Cabo one of the top vacation destinations in the world. Rising to the top of the Cabo real estate is luxury community Querencia, an 1,800-acre private community on the tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. Nestled between the rugged mountains and stunning Sea of Cortez, the community is one of the North America’s most exclusive residential locations. Querencia is extremely popular among Texans seeking a vacation home. With easy travel proximity and year-round sunny weather, Texans are investing major dollars into luxury Cabo real estate. What’s more, the gated community offers top-ofthe-line property management and 24/7 security so residents can rest easy knowing their holiday home is well taken care of. One of the highlights of Querencia is that it is the only truly private community in the Cabo region. There’s a nice mix of varying ownership options, including home sites for custom builds, expansive luxury properties, ocean view homes, condominiums, golf villas and more. Prices range from $750,000 to more than $12 million USD. Querencia prides itself on its firstrate lifestyle for residents. Among the many five-star resort amenities offered, the heart of the community is its 58,000 square-foot clubhouse. The Club features tons of resort services, including multiple dining venues,

an elegant wine cellar, infinity pool and Jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool and waterfall, state-of-the-art fitness center with a yoga pavilion, separate kids’ and teens’ clubs, and full concierge and business center services. The community organizes on-going events that encourage residents to embrace the ‘Baja fun’ and laid-back lifestyle, including seasonal events, fun dining menus, themed parties and lively happy hours. Another cornerstone of Querencia is the community’s 18-hole, 300 acre private championship golf course, ranked the top course in Mexico and one of the top 100

courses in the world. Designed by worldrenowned architect Tom Fazio, the course offers challenging play and spectacular views from every hole. Querencia continues to enhance its offerings for buyers, with new amenities set to open this year, including the Q Ocean Club. This one-of-a-kind space will feature 1.5 acres of pristine oceanfront property with multiple resort-style comforts, including a coastal-inspired restaurant, a sun-drenched terrace with fire pit for open air dining, and a water sports area offering surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and snorkeling for residents. New real

estate options include Verandas, the new phase of its highly sought-after luxury condominiums. Starting at $750,000 USD, Verandas offers a variety of floor plans up to four-bedroom units with spacious gourmet kitchens, open-air terraces, stunning views of the Sea of Cortez, and all the flora and fauna Querencia has to offer. ■

changed. I have become more creative and can do more new things than before.” For the first time, many of Songa’s artisans are earning wages that allow them to purchase plots of land, send their children to school, purchase livestock and provide invaluable support to their families, all without depending on a husband. “My work means a lot to me,” said Thamar, Songa Designs' sisal plant weaver. "It means security and dignity. I have relied on my husband to meet my needs in the past, which made him think of me as a useless person. From the time I started weaving with Songa, things have changed. I am happier and confident. I can meet my needs without waiting on my husband.” Using skills passed down for generations, each of Songa Designs’ unique baskets is handmade with eco-friendly materials such as banana leaf, sisal plant, upcycled fabric, recycled paper, and repurposed cow horn that otherwise would end up in land-

f the home is an expression of the owner, what does yours say? Is it filled with comfortable decor and muted tones? Or featuring vibrant, bold and inviting pieces that tell a story? On a mission to spread confidence, joy, and women's empowerment, lifestyle and home décor brand Songa Designs International is changing the lives of women around the world by creating accessories with purpose. Sarah Sternberg, founder of Songa Designs, dreamed of a career that made a major impact on the lives of others. As part of a third round of layoffs at a real estate development company in 2008, Sternberg traded in her safe 9-to-5 job for cold-water bucket baths, sleeping under the stars and working in a rural Ugandan village. When she moved to Rwanda to do skills training for women’s cooperatives all over the country, Sternberg met women like Mama Tito, Mama Dan and Mama Merci. Sternberg observed how the Mamas worked best together; they were able to support one another as individuals by being a part of a tenacious community of strong women. Their determination and skills as artisans inspired Sternberg to co-found Songa Designs International, a company that thrives as a home décor and accessories brand celebrating the significance of women all over the world. Every part of Songa Designs, even down to its name - Songa means “the path forward” in Swahili - strives to support Rwandan women on their journey toward financial liberation. Crafted with fair trade principles in mind, Songa Designs currently provides 175 women in Rwanda with the opportunity to make their own income using special skills they acquired at a young age. “Being an artisan means being creative and open,” said Eugenie, Songa Designs’ seamstress. “I used to be lonely and closed but from the time I started working with other women, my life

fills. Each tightly woven basket takes an artisan approximately one week to create and brings a little piece of the world into your home. All of Songa’s collections are named after one of the Mamas who initially inspired Sternberg. The basket collection is named after Mama Tin Tin who Sternberg warmly refers to as her “Rwandan Mama.” Each of the baskets also has a special meaning. The Bedawi basket and tray means “nomad” in Swahili, giving tribute to the homage of Songa. The Mudita Basket means “to delight in the happiness of others.” The Fernweh Basket means “a longing to travel, missing a place you’ve never been,” while the Elysian Magazine Holder means “beautiful, creative, divinely inspired.” ■

id you know that just a touch of the past in your home decor can turn an ordinary so-so space into an exciting conversation piece? From antique (100 years of older) to the art deco and 50s vintage of mid-century modern, finding pieces in any of these periods is the epitome of saving valuable objects from the landfill and bringing a bit of history into your life. Not only will you spice up your decor, you may discover a new passion: antique shopping. Neighbors Wende Lancaster and Katie Lillback get a lot of their current antique fix from Sherrie Sanderson’s A Little Room shop on Broadway. After working as a designer for many years, “I became frustrated at the lack of beautiful home accents to choose from in San Antonio. Everything I carry I would love to display in my own home,” Sanderson explained. “I was always interested in antiques and dabbled in selling them during an overseas buying trip with Sherrie,” Wende said. “I met my husband, an antiques dealer, in Barcelona. After we married and he moved to San Antonio, we merged our interests in furnishing our home, combining antiques with our modern pieces.” Katie Lillback has been hooked on antiques since a youngster. “I have loved old furnishings since I was a child and shopped with my mom. I moved to San Antonio six years ago. My first stop was A Little Room owned by Sherrie Sanderson. I knew then I was going to be a permanent fixture in

her store. I love the colors in older furnishings and the warmth they give a room. I also like to mix them with my newer upholstery, so the house stays fresh. It’s hard to believe I have tables from the 17th century!” Mixing period pieces with other styles can be challenging. Deco4all notes that antiques add chic to interior decorating in classic style and offers the following tips for decorating with antiques:

AVOID USING DIFFERENT STYLES ON OPPOSITE WALLS.

GROUP ANTIQUE ITEMS IN ODD NUMBERS FOR STRIKING AND CLASSIC DECOR.

SIMILAR ITEMS CAN BE PAIRED FOR A SYMMETRICAL CLASSIC STYLE.

 

LARGE AND VERY DECORATIVE ANTIQUE PIECES, TYPICAL OF BAROQUE, ARE MOST EFFECTIVE WHEN STANDING ALONE, WITH SURROUNDING SPACE. AVOID USING A DARK CORNER WHEN PLACING THESE ITEMS. DO NOT SPREAD SMALL ANTIQUE ACCESSORIES AROUND THE ROOM. INSTEAD, DISPLAY THEM AS A GROUP ON A TABLE FOR THE MOST VISUAL IMPACT.

Antiques “At Home” To get an authentic feel for antique furnishings and gather ideas for creating some antique pops in your home, a trip to San Antonio Conservation Society’s Steves House is a great start. Built in 1876 for Edward Steves, founder of Steves Lumber Company, this three-story beauty is filled with what was then modern furniture…today’s antiques. In back are the former carriage house, wash house and quarters for the gardener and stable boy (now the Visitors Center). The River House, originally one of the area’s first indoor swimming pools, was filled in and now has a brick floor. The space serves as SACS meeting quarters. Daily tours are conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For reservations, please call 210.227.9160. ■

 SAN ANTONIO CONSERVATION SOCIETY’S STEVES HOUSE IS A GREAT PLACE TO INVESTIGATE FOR SOME ANTIQUE CORNER IDEAS INCLUDING A RETRO CABINET TOPPED WITH A SINK. A FEW YEARS AGO KOHLER AND OTHER BATH SUPPLY HOUSES INTERPRETED THE IDEA INTO PRICEY ANTIQUE LOOKING CABINETS. VISITING ANTIQUE/USED FURNITURE STORES CAN TURN UP SUITABLE OPTIONS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES. I FOUND A VARIETY OF SIZES AT A DOWNTOWN USED FURNITURE STORE (NO LONGER IN BUSINESS) AND HAD CULTURED MARBLE TOPS MADE TO FIT. NOT ONLY DO THEY BRING A BIT OF THE PAST TO YOUR LIVING SPACE, THEY HAVE LOTS OF EXTRA STORAGE SPACE.

 TIDDLEY WINKS, ANYONE? A DOWNSTAIRS CORNER IN STEVES HOUSE REPLICATES THE OLD TIME GAME CENTER, YET REQUIRES JUST A LITTLE SPACE. TWO ORNATELY CARVED BROCADE CHAIRS FLANK A SMALL MARBLE-TOPPED TABLE FOR CHECKERS, CHESS OR CARDS. TRY AN EASY ADAPTATION IN YOUR HOME FOR FUN AND ADMIRATION.

 A BEDROOM OUT OF THE PAST. KATIE LILLBECK CREATED A SWEET-DREAMS BEDROOM COMBINING ANTIQUE CHESTS AND LAMPS SOFTENED BY ARTISTIC TAPESTRIES, FILMY BED COVERING AND PLUSH COVERED BENCH.

 STEVES HOUSE FEATURES A SEWING CORNER AS PART OF A LADY’S UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. TREADLE SEWING MACHINES ARE FAIRLY EASY TO FIND TODAY AND ACCESSORIES SHOPPING CAN MAKE THE CORNER USEFUL FOR TODAY AS WELL AS A TALK-ABOUT SUBJECT FOR VISITORS.

ranch house still stands, is being turned into a community park with gardens and a stargazing venue. In addition, 300 acres of future parkland directly adjoin the property, and the activity center, “HW Central,” is scheduled to open in summer 2017. Of particular note, the Headwaters community will have an on-site lifestyle director, Audrey Clay. Clay’s sole job is to plan a variety of social and recreational events within the community to encourage engagement with residents. “The fact that Freehold Communities contracts a lifestyle director from the get-go really shows their commitment to community engagement,” said Clay. “When residents move to Headwaters, they will be

asked some questions about the size of their family and what recreational activities they enjoy doing.” From there, Clay will be able to create lifestyle events tailored to the interests of Headwaters residents. “I want to incorporate that neighborly feel,” Clay said. “As part of our commitment to the Vital Communities™ approach to a fit and healthy lifestyle, the first residents of Headwaters will be able to immediately enjoy a variety of outdoor recreation at Headwaters’ activity center, completed in the first phase, unusual for most residential developments,” explained Suzanne Maddalon, vice president of marketing for Freehold Communities. “We are proud that the property’s history of outdoor recreation MARCH//APRIL 2017 NHOME /

Homestead Park A truly unique feature to the Headwaters community is Homestead Park, now completed, which includes a picnic area and historic ranch house site, perfect for unabated stargazing. Originally known as the Hazy Hills Ranch, dating back to 1940, construction crews worked to maintain the original stone exterior, interior and fireplace. In addition, crews incorporated flower gardens which now cover what used to be the floor of the original house. The area serves as a peaceful and charming place for Headwaters residents to retreat, and has already impressed potential homebuyers visiting the park. In March, Headwater’s public grand opening celebrated the new community and invited attendees to tour model homes while enjoying family-friendly activities such as live music, balloon twisters, caricaturists, face painting, prizes and Austin-based food trucks. Throughout the event, prospective homebuyers were particularly interested in Headwaters’ goal to embrace outdoor living and community engagement. Also of interest was the availability of natural gas throughout the community and the knowledge that almost all home sites back up to open space. ■

A Focus on Fitness Homestead is created with Freehold’s signature Vital Communities™ approach, and is designed to encourage healthy living, fitness and neighborhood engagement. Homestead’s amenities will include: • More than 88 acres of open space, including an activity center with open air pavilion, grill stations, sports courts, natural playscape for kids and an adjacent pet park. • Nearly five miles of hiking and jogging trails, ponds and parks. • 14-acre City of Schertz park with direct access from community • State-of-the-art fitness center with innovative equipment offering onsite fitness classes and a resort-style pool with kids’ splash pad. • Full-time, dedicated lifestyle director who will plan ongoing community social events. An uncommon approach to developing communities, the Vital Communities™ concept was developed through consumer research of distinctive needs, trends and preferences in local markets and careful selection of creative builders who share the Freehold philosophy of unique home designs. “Homestead’s architectural style is centered on family, community and a respect for the land,” said Suzanne Maddalon, vice

president of marketing for Freehold Communities. “Homestead boasts one of the highest elevations in Guadalupe County and with our builder teams now established, we plan to embrace Vital Communities™ principles with architectural cues from farms and homesteads of a much simpler time.” What the Research Said With the average American seeking to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle, homebuyers across various generations are beginning to search for communities in which recreational activities are offered as well as a community to share them with. That revelation became the foundation for Freehold’s Vital Communities™ across the U.S. Homestead embodies that lifestyle in a handful of ways beginning with a location that includes sprawling views accompanied by a long list of amenities and recreational opportunities that provide residents with a wide selection of their favorite fitness activities. These amenities piggyback on Freehold’s ability to hone in on what is important to people throughout the home buying process and allows the art of healthy living to be an everyday routine. Additionally, Homestead’s community focuses on bridging the gap between neighbor and community, one healthy step at a time. ■

ASID Seventh Annual Business of Design Event // BY: SHERYL BECK // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS

Super day,” “awesome,” “loved the opportunity to interact with vendors,” “great entertaining speaker,” “super knowledgeable,” “better time with vendors this year,” “best one yet,” and “great courses” were just some of the comments heard at the Seventh Annual Business of Design event. The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) opened the 2017 spring season hosting their annual Business of Design (BOD) event on March 2, 2017. This was the seventh year the ASID provided the San Antonio and South Texas interior design community a forum in which to gain valued continuing education units (CEUs) and interact with premier vendors in the residential and commercial product industry. With a record attendance of over 100 interior designers and industry vendors, the all-day event was held at the newly renovated Embassy Suites in NW San Antonio. The new “Product Expo” offered over thirty vendors, both local and other parts of the United States. There was much to see with trade participants providing an inspired exhibition, forming a positive design outlook for 2017.

62

/ NHOME MARCH//APRIL 2017

The enthusiastic turnout reflected presentations sponsored by the Interior Trade Cartel, Marazzi, Ferguson/Elkay and KBK, all offering new trade knowledge to the participants. BOD 2017’s expanded scope included industry partners, local tradesmen and featured guest speakers, including: • History of Performance Textiles by Maxwell Fabrics • Building Barrier Free Showers by Schluter Systems • Deconstruction of a Chair by Century Furniture • Organizational Culture Card Game by Haworth • Acrylic in Design by Interlude Home Breakfast, lunch and a social hour complemented the event. The social hour capped off the day with a vendor-sponsored “Interior Designer” prize drawing. Lucky designers won restaurant gift cards, kitchen and bath hardware, KitchenAid kitchenware, plants, antiques, furniture and so much more. San Antonio’s Design Community 2017 ASID chair is Jamie Hernandez. This year’s BOD event was chaired by Sheryl Beck and co-chaired by Heather Nunez. ■
