a note from the publisher
Outdoor kitchens and pools add value to homes. Pools are great for family fun and great for entertaining guests. So if your home did not come with a pool, consider adding a pool or upgrading and remodeling an older pool for your enjoyment. Texas Pools & Patios, one of the largest family owned pool companies has been building and remodeling pools in Austin PROUD MEMBER OF: and San Antonio since 1978. They build custom in ground pools and offer complete beautiful backyard designs that include decks, patios and pergolas. They offer a one stop outdoor design that also includes spas and hot tubs, waterfalls and landscape designs to suit your style and family life. We have taken the time to learn why so many people have great testimonials to share about the excellent customer service they have received from owner, Jim Crites and his friendly staff. If you have not yet visited their new San Antonio showroom, we suggest you read the article and then go and see for yourselves why so many of their clients are repeat and referred customers. Spring time is known as a season to tidy up your home, remodel and just create a new look. California Closets’ Misty Rodriguez gives us five tips to help us de-clutter in our functional design article “Clean The Clutter”. Misty offers suggestions to help make Spring cleaning fun and meaningful. As usual, in addition to highlighting great home ideas, we like to bring you news about town and highlight some of the rich Texas life. Our editor had the opportunity to interview The Fiesta Commission to get you the facts of The Official Fiesta Royalties and to showcase one of the many positive leadership community organizations who offer their own royal court for the youth. We have included a Fiesta calendar so you do not miss out on the days and times of several Fiesta events that take place in the month of April. And after you have celebrated at these events, be sure to enjoy some Fiesta food. Our Dining guide article names just a few places that offer mouth watering dishes. So “Viva Fiesta!” Join in the celebrations and don't forget to satisfy your taste buds! We appreciate your continued support as a vivid reader of NHOME Texas! Sincerely,

Mi Tierra
every day regardless of the weather. San Antonians and tourists alike flock to this gem nestled in the heart of downtown to enjoy a traditional breakfast, hearty lunch or authentic dinner in a spirited setting. Diners also visit Mi Tierra to enjoy the massive selection of traditional Mexican pastry. If you review past articles you'll see that I have lauded many a burger joint as the best in San Antonio. So, I may seem like a bit of a flip flopper to now claim that Chris Madrids is home to the best burger in the city. Think what you will, but bear in mind that this article is about the warm feelings we all have about Fiesta and San Antonio’s rich history and years of fond memories. It is with that in mind that I can say without wavering that the Tostada Bean Burger, with the melted cheddar, homemade refried beans and that shiny bun, is the best burger ever. And by ever, I mean ever. As long as you’re out and about enjoying the festivities, make time to visit these establishments and enjoy the spirit of Fiesta in their distinctive settings. For more information about these restaurants, visit their websites:

veryone has a favorite Fiesta event, a favorite parade, their own unique way to enjoy San Antonio’s biggest celebration. My favorites are the beautiful Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the highly seasoned A Taste of New Orleans and the delicious A Taste of the Northside which benefits Brighton Center. These are my go to events, but like some San Antonians, I carefully scan the Fiesta schedule to discover other opportunities to squeeze more fun and education out of these magical days and evenings. As tourists flock to San Antonio to join our big party, locals will return to some of our favorite restaurants, those special places that remind us of what makes San Antonio so special. Here are some of my favorites. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the La Fogata margarita is the best margarita in the city. Can I say exactly why? No. Maybe it’s the beautiful patio setting. Or, perhaps it's their famous fire-roasted cuisine and salsa. It doesn't matter. What matters is that La Fogata is a favorite of locals seeking good food in a romantic setting served by a staff committed to “positively fabulous service.” Texas has more than its fair share of barbeque joints. Or as some prefer “BBQ” joints. If you're a real Texan, you expect there to be a little smoke in the air. Partly cloudy in Texas means that someone's smoking a brisket. Real Texans take their meat very seriously and many, myself included, enjoy Rudy's fare. I don't just like it. I like it like it. I like their brisket. I like their creamed corn, I like their peach cobbler. Rudy’s is a delicious choice for a family dinner and a convenient choice for large group catering. Few restaurants can boast about serving home cooking 24/7. Lulu's Bakery and Cafe, known for that giant cinnamon roll, also serves American diner fare that has been warming the hearts of San Antonians for years. Don’t go alone. The portions are more than any one person can handle. Magnolia Pancake Haus is one of those places that is a must visit for tourists, but be warned, there’s always a wait. Just know that it's worth it to enjoy the magic of the Magnolia Pancake Haus. I've figured out why the wait is so long. It’s the menu. It is spectacular. Ordering your meal is tantamount to rejecting everything else on the menu and that just feels wrong. Patrons go in with hearts set on enjoying their famous pancakes and then they see the amazing selection of omelets and the waffles. It’s enough to make your head spin. Serving comforting meals 24 hours a day, Mi Tierra is open

Work, work, work - has the rat race got you down and out? Are the vacations over rated and end too soon? Are you tired of arguing with the kids because they’re never home? Maybe you find yourself constantly nagging to get the backyard mowed. My advice - you don’t need a longer vacation, a family counselor, or a divorce. What you need is a backyard oasis from Texas Pools & Patios - a pool and outdoor living space, a staycation for the whole family. Imagine coming home after a long hot day and stepping out the back door to your own resort. That’s what Texas Pools & Patios can help you create. Their award winning designs can be as unique and imaginative as you are. They are committed to excellence whether you want simple or sensational outdoor living. If in the past you’ve shied away from creating your own outdoor space because you aren’t able to picture what’s possible, there’s good news. I sat down with Jim Crites, one of the Crites brothers whose pool building experience goes back three decades. His design at the table automation with 3D renderings had me amazed. “We are on the cutting edge of technology,” he said. “There is an old way and now there is a new way.” He definitely had me sitting on the edge of my seat as I watched him take a plot plan and photograph of a backyard and create my dream pool and outdoor living space. And speaking of what’s new in pool technology, did you know there is a app for

your smart phone. No more having to wait for the spa to heat - baby it’s date night and I’m headed home. It’s that simple. Just tell them what you want; outdoor kitchen, cabana, swimming pool with water fall, spa with water feature, pool side bar with seating, and don’t forget the lights.... oh my! You’d be surprised what a difference LED lights make in the ambience of your pool and outdoor living space. Clay Sultemeier, sales manager for the San Antonio division pointed out that they’ve stood the test of time in an industry with a lot of turnover. “We know the lay of the land in Central Texas. We know the topography and what it takes to build a quality pool. There are differences in the soil between Stone Oak and Terrell Hills. You need a pool builder who understands that.”

Experience is everything if you want it done right. “Some of our pool artisans and craftsmen have been working with us for 20 years,” Jim added. When I asked about affordability Clay said, “Think of the cost of a car or a monthly car payment. Financing options are available. We’re here to make your dream a reality.” The Crites family is dedicated to customer service. Unlike national companies who have corporate offices in the North, you’ll find the owners of Texas Pools & Patios on the jobsite and available to take your calls. The reviews are in and they are exceptional. John Palmer of Pipe Creek wrote, “I would like to thank Texas Pools & Patios for building a beautiful pool. my budget. He said I would be able to use the pool before the summer was over, and the work was performed in a very smooth and timely manner, just as he had promised. I have enjoyed the pool immensely the past few weeks since it has been completed. The customer service and construction departments were very attentive and willing to help me in any way. They kept me informed throughout the progress of the pool. The superintendent made sure every phase was completed to code. I want to thank you again Texas Pools and Patios and let you know that you may use me as a referral for anyone in the San Antonio area that would like to see your work completed.” Whether you have a blank canvas and need a whole backyard package with pool, spa and outdoor living space, or if you’ve got a lifeless, boring pool that the family has tired of, Texas Pools & Patios can bring your backyard to life, even giving your old pool a beautiful new look. The Crites family has been in the pool building business since 1977. They build pools in Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Boerne and all over the hill country. They were named Top 25 in the Pool and Spa News. Texas Pools & Patios is a member of The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals and a Certified Building Professional. Call Texas Pools & Patios to transform your backyard into a vacation resort that the whole family will enjoy for a lifetime. ■

BABY BOOMERS
INDEPENDENCE AT HOME
NOSNIBOR137/BIGSTOCK.COM
T
// SPECIAL TO NHOME
here has never been a better time to be 50 and older. The market place has finally opened it’s eyes to the buying power of Baby Boomers; the largest consumer group and the greatest buying power in the history of our country. Baby Boomers have a desire to stay, act, think and feel young. That’s why they say the new 50 is 40. Not only are they the largest economic group but they are educated, take care of themselves and can afford life’s luxuries. Fifty is no longer midlife, it’s the start of life. With that kind of mindset, when Father Time does strike physically or mentally, it’s hard to picture living anywhere other than at home. The question becomes how to safely live at home when the body or mind start failing. How can family members have peace of mind; wanting what’s best for a loved one, as well as wanting to honor lifestyle wishes at the same time? I recently visited with Jennica Colvin. I heard about what she was doing from a good friend who is a Physical Therapist. Colvin is an Occupational Therapist. She and her hand selected team of nurses and therapists at Colvin Home Health & Consultative Services have a common bond that ties; a passion and hope to keep people in their home as long as possible. While Colvin worked in the nursing home setting, she was a keen observer to the fact that many early admissions to the facility came because of falls or an injury associated with a fall. As the population ages they look for services that offer options to keep them safe and free of preventable injuries. Physical and Occupational therapists have an exciting and integral part of this demand for services. A home assessment looks at the clients home as well as the clients ability to maneuver inside and outside of their space. Basic
recommendations can be made to improve lighting, remove throw rugs, or re-arrange furniture to make the home more accessible and safe. More complex recommendations such as use of ramps or other home modifications can also be assessed. Colvin’s goal is to keep people in their home longer. Their services include:
1 2 3 4 5 6
OLDER DRIVER REHABILITATION BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING NURSING SOCIAL COUNSELING PHYSICAL THERAPY, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND SPEECH THERAPY
Colvin is passionate about what she does and she has gathered a team of professionals who share her passion. Their mission is to help people ‘Age in Place’. “We resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak... Because, in your life you will have been all of these.” ■

he Texas Hill Country boasts over 42 wineries with an eclectic mix of palettes and vintages, so it is no wonder why Atlanta based, Photo-Realism Wine painter Thomas Arvid feels right at home when visiting the San Antonio / Hill Country area. March 13 – 15, 2015 marked the two year return of the internationally acclaimed painter to South Texas region with patrons treated to a VIP private preview dinner at Flemings in the Quarry, a Second Saturday Art & Wine event solo spotlight exhibition of giclee works on canvas that included four originals at J.R. Mooney Galleries in Boerne; coupled with a meet and greet with the artist at the gallery and the Boerne Wine Company. Thomas Arvid is a self-taught artist with a signature angular perspective and compositional completeness – glass, bottle, and corkscrew. Arvid proceeds with deliberate off-the-canvas slants that seem to stunt the elements in a seemingly haphazard tipsy aesthetic-an Arvid tilted room effect. Larger than life wine bottles, corks, and other bar accoutrements can be seen in his signature downward still-life perspectives. Picture perfect painterly renditions capture the hyperrealism version of this studio set-up that spotlights the reflections in the wine glass, the shimmer of the liquid, and metallic silver finishes; obsessively seamless ovals, curves, and ellipses portray the physicality of this still-life better than a photograph ever could. Over the past few years Thomas Arvid has celebrated his first museum exhibition, “Arvid: Reflecting the Good Life,” at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, Georgia; in addition to a 5 year waiting list on original oil paintings. Prices on originals can reach $120,000 to $150,000. Understandably, he works wherever he can, even doing watercolor sketches and paintings on the plane flights as he travels back and forth from California and other wine sponsored events throughout the country. A newer original titled: “Polishing the Silver” is a Mixed Media Proof on canvas featuring the Silver Oak label, measuring 31 x 60 inches and valued at $10,000.00. Zach Swangstu, Assistant Sales Manager at Thomas Arvid Fine Art, Inc. explains, “A mixed media proof is a giclee on canvas that Thomas has put his brush to, customizing the work of art and in doing so creating a unique masterpiece. “Polishing the Silver” is a piece that only exists in a few homes across the country and every one of them are different. It’s considered a mixed media because Thomas is using a giclee to start and applies oil to the piece, using different mediums to complete the overall work of art. As opposed to the $125,000 collectors are paying for Thom’s original oil on canvas masterpieces, a mixed media proof valued at $10,000 is attractively priced and still holds the long-term value and collectability as an original, perfect for the Arvid collector who is ready to take their first step into the world of originals.” ■

TIPS
ONLINE FRAUD PREVENTION // SPECIAL TO NHOME
According to the 2014 Internet Security Threat Report, published by Symantec Enterprise, 1 in 392 emails contain phishing attacks. Jefferson Bank is committed to protecting customers’ online banking information from the evolving threats of the Internet. Below are five tips to help prevent online fraudulent activity.
1
NEVER CLICK ON POP-UPS OR LINKS IN AN UNSOLICITED EMAIL. Some fraudulent attacks entice a user to click on a file that secretly installs malware, which are various programs that give the outside source access to your computer. Close pop-up ads by clicking the “X” instead of clicking within the advertisement itself. When in doubt, close your entire browsing session.
2
CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD FREQUENTLY. You should change your password every 30-60 days. It is also recommended to use strong passwords including alpha, numeric, and special characters in a wordless pattern that cannot be easily guessed. Passwords should be unique for each site you visit and should not be shared.
3
KEEP YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND BROWSER UPTO-DATE. Keeping your browser and operating system current with the latest security updates will help prevent fraudulent activity. Install a personal firewall that will prevent outside access to information on your computer. Make sure you have anti-spyware software on your computer.
4
MAXIMIZE SECURITY THROUGH STATE OF THE ART PROTECTION. Jefferson Bank offers security software for Cash Management Business customers, which works alongside existing firewall and antivirus solutions to provide added protection to the online Banking session. The software creates a secure tunnel between the customer’s keyboard and Jefferson Bank to minimize the risk of financial information being captured by cyber criminals.
5
A Jefferson Bank representative is available to speak to your group about how to prevent identity theft. Jefferson Bank is a family-owned bank serving communities in San Antonio, New Braunfels, Boerne and the Texas Hill Country since 1946. ■

e are now encroaching upon the notorious season of Spring Cleaning. While this can be a dreaded chore for some of us, we can probably all admit that we need this in some form or fashion. It doesn’t have to be all work and no play, so here are a few tips to help you make the most of it:

Set a specific day, weekend or week and mark it on your calendar. Setting aside the proper amount of time can help keep you on track and avoid putting it off. Marking your calendar will get you mentally prepared for the task at hand as well as advance your level of intention. Start with one area at a time. Have you ever heard the expression, “Don’t bite off more than you can chew?” It’s easy to get overzealous and start off well, but to avoid getting overwhelmed and quitting half way through, make a game plan and start with one area at a time. For me, I typically start with the easiest area and work my way toward the more challenging spaces. With each completed and organized space, I feel accomplished and my motivation is maintained. Another idea to keep you motivated is to try rewarding yourself in between accomplishments; doing this keeps things interesting and playful.

Donate and purge items that you are no longer using. Use the three bin rule to create piles for things to donate or give away, things to throw away, and things that are in the wrong place and need to be relocated. Remember to make honest assessments of when the last time you have used an item and if you really think you’ll use it again. To embrace the changes and progress you are making, try using the one-in one-out rule. Anytime you introduce a new item to the space, find an item to donate or give away.

Consider hiring a professional. Sometimes we need a little outside help when we get stuck. California Closets can help you establish a budget, set goals for your space, and help pick finishes and hardware details that fit your style and flow beautifully with your home. It’s that easy!

The Spanish colonial missions of San Antonio (including the Alamo), are gaining global recognition as the United States nominates them for inclusion on the World Heritage List. Organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Heritage List recognizes the most significant cultural and natural sites in the world. Included are Stonehenge, the great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Egypt. If awarded, the missions would be the first World Heritage site in the State of Texas and only the 23rd in the United States. That list includes Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Young Professionals Leadership Committee
T
PHOTOS COURTESY OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE
here is always tremendous opportunity for any individual if they have the desire to push the boundaries and lay a foundation for change. Now that we have our first Young Professionals Leadership Committee meeting in the books, we can start this shift and create some history. Co-Chair Rodney and I have been working very hard to lay a strong foundation this year with this committee so that it can sustain its excitement and influence for years to come. Our first meeting on February 11 was a huge success and definitely something that people will be talking about for a while. Now that we have people’s interest our goal is to keep them engrossed in being a part of shaping GSABA’s future leaders and giving time to other areas including; membership, SMC, and attending more events. In order to be the best in any industry, one has to absorb all aspects and continue to be a student. The next big event is March 25. It will be a spokesperson/leadership seminar for YPLC members. At this event you will also receive your pin to solidify your commitment this year and recognize you as an active member. We have some amazing guest speakers which will be sure to leave participants inspired and motivated. ■
If you or someone you know is interesting in being a part of this committee, please email or call. 210-757-9766 or amymarie@theschradergroup.com.
