How I wish the love and sense of peace in the community now would last all year long! The American Society of Designers (ASID) Texas San Antonio Chapter consist of a group of very skilled design professionals who always seem to be in this spirit all year long, and we love this group! We very proud to this group of exquisite designers on our Holiday cover! Their Pinnacle of Design competition is now in its 3rd year and has received tremendous attention here in our city. The designers offer beautiful work and are all people of beautiful spirit! We have showcased the winners' work over several pages in the issue.
PROUD MEMBER OF:
All year long, in different capacities, they strive to use their skills and time to offer their services for compensation and yet still find time for joint work to offer their services for free to very well deserving non-profit. And they always seem to add fun and joy to everything they do--we love these folks and we love our ongoing partnership with the ASID SA designers. Contact us to recommend one for your next project! We hope you enjoy our holiday issue and we look forward to your support in 2017! Thank you as always,

JW MARRIOTT
Brunch DINING FROM 10 TO 2 // BY: ANGELA CLACK

/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2016
I'M CONVINCED that brunch was invented by some undecided diner who'd slept in, waking up hungry sometime after 10:00 in the morning. I have no proof of this, however, it makes perfect sense. I further submit that this dilemma has spawned some of the great buffets we now enjoy. Diners now routinely enjoy a meal sandwiched somewhere between breakfast and lunch, brunch. Here are a few of my

favorite brunch destinations. 18 Oaks is one of San Antonio's best kept secrets. It's very well hidden at the golf club entrance at the J.W. Marriott in San Antonio some distance from the resort's other restaurants. It's one of two brunch options at the resort; Cibolo Moon, the resort's massive and delightful family oriented option, and then there's the resorts upscale brunch option, 18 Oaks which is $49 for adults and $19 for children. It's pricey, but well worth it. You won't find standard brunch fare. There are no bins of scrambled eggs or piles of hash browns at 18 Oaks. What they're serving is special. They call it "Farm Fresh Texas Hill Country Cuisine." Besides an impressive raw bar and roasted turkey and prime rib carving stations, there's charcuterie, and an assortment of other specialty dishes not typically found on a standard buffet. It's not all about hunting and gathering at 18 Oaks. There's a short but impressive a la carte menu that's included with brunch featuring made to order omelets, short rib benedicts and
French toast. And perhaps the best feature, 18 Oaks is smaller and more intimate than a typical buffet. You'll need a reservation. Once there you'll enjoy the bottomless mimosas and the live music. Austin is becoming my favorite Texas city for dining and the Domain in North Austin is getting most of my attention. If you find yourself in the area, check out Cru Food and Wine Bar. It's a tiny hot spot for those of us who enjoy great wine and expertly prepared small plates. Cru has done a masterful job of delighting wine lovers at all levels. It's school for folks like me who like wine but want (need to) get more comfortable with parings and other snooty elements of the wine world. Cru is cool in that they've made wining and dining a delicious adventure with chic presentations of cleverly named wine flights so that one comes away both satisfied and educated. But alas this article isn't about wine, it's about brunch, and Cru is included because they've got a great brunch menu. I'm going to put this right here because their so

SECOND BAR
There's always a wait at Snooze, an AM Eatery. No matter what location you go to in the handful of cities fortunate to have a location, there's a wait. What do those of us willing to endure the sometimes long wait times know that you don’t? Snooze is what you dream about when you dream about breakfast. Truth be told, it's mostly dessert posing as breakfast. In the real world, there's no such thing as pineapple upside down pancakes but in the dream world that is Snooze they do exist and they are amazing. So I realize that it's possible that you're just not that into sweets. Snooze has mastered the art of savory as well. The chef/artist/mad scientists at ooze have concocted menu items such as the Bella! Bella! Benny, which is thin slices of prosciutto, Taleggio cheese, and perfectly poached eggs on toasted ciabatta, topped with cream cheese hollandaise, balsamic glaze and arugula. Even the drink menu is thoughtful. Yes, there's great coffee, but there's also everything you'd expect from a good barista along with drinks such as their Dirty Drunken Chai which seems wrong on a number of levels, but is actually quite good as it includes Bhakti Chai, espresso, steamed milk, coffee liqueur and Cruzan rum. It's enough to send you right back to bed. Sadly, there's no San Antonio location which just means that we need to send sternly worded emails to the Snooze home office until they relent and build us one. Second Bar and Kitchen is getting high marks for a great menu and great service. I visited the Austin Domain location inside the beautiful Archer hotel. If this weren't an article about dining, I'd devote some time to gushing about Archer Austin, one of just four Archer locations in the US. They're great, you should visit, but that's a review for another time. Second's Domain location has two settings, the main restaurant, which is stunning, and the terrace which is also gorgeous. Top choices from their delightful menu include their Strawberry Lavender Scone with honey butter and their Black & Bleu Quiche with black truffle, bleu cheese, red onion, pork belly and medjool dates. Grits are always a winner with me, and they've gone to another level with black truffle grits, an oxymoron to be sure, but a delicious one. Second is great across the board for all meals, lunch, dinner and
SECOND BAR grabbing a late night bite on their terrace. To whoever invented brunch, I say thank you. Thank you for sleeping in. Thank you for not knowing which meal to choose, breakfast or lunch. Thank you for inspiring these and other restaurants to offer some of the best dining (and sipping) between the hours of 10 and 2. ■

Cordillera Ranch
LUXURY COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO GROW AND THRIVE // BY: LIZA MENCARINI

magine 8,700 acres of rolling country hills, extraordinary views and the crystal clear spring waters of the Guadalupe River. Instead of asphalt, there’s winding paths; and in place of traffic lights, dazzling fields of wildflowers. This oasis exists at Cordillera Ranch, located just outside of San Antonio in the heart of Texas Hill Country. Behind the gates of this master-planned community there are truly something special for everyone. Considered one of Texas’ most desirable addresses, Cordillera Ranch boasts the best of resort-style living, complemented by stunning nature and gorgeous homes. It is a resident’s utopia. Cordillera Ranch was one of America’s first communities to champion the resort-style amenity trend and features seven spectacular clubs – The Golf Club, Tennis and Swim Club, Spa and Athletic Club, Social Club, Equestrian Club, Rod and Gun Club and River Club. Gone are the days of residents dreaming about resort vacations; at Cordillera Ranch they live a resort-style life. Residents can easily book a massage, take a swim in one of the infinity pools and enjoy a delicious formal dinner paired with cellar club wines – all in their backyard. Another special aspect about Cordillera Ranch is the community’s dedication to preserving nature and native open space. Over 80% of the development remains native Hill Country vegetation, which benefits local wildlife and helps minimize the impact on one of Texas’ most precious resources – water. In addition, the community has insti-
tuted lighting ordinances, which control light pollution and benefit stargazers. The night sky at Cordillera Ranch is spectacular, with a crystal-clear sky and views of the stars’ brilliance for miles. In fact, one of the neighborhood’s most well-known residents, PGA Tour player Jimmy Walker, doubles as an astrophotographer from his Cordillera Ranch estate. Real estate-wise, the luxury community has achieved record sales the past few years, and new home building has continued at an exceptional rate. Anywhere from 40-50 homes are under construction at any given time. Due to high buyer demand, the community just introduced its latest luxury enclave, The Springs of Cordillera Ranch. Primed for development, The Springs of Cordillera Ranch features home sites from 3/4 to three-plus acres boasting sweeping Hill Country vistas, multiple trails and easy access to the Guadalupe River. “We’re thrilled to officially unveil The Springs,” says Charlie Hill, President and Chief Operating Officer for DH Investments, developer of Cordillera Ranch. “The neighborhood’s cypress-lined creeks and massive oak trees punctuate a unique mix of stunning residential options amid the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.”
Outside of The Springs, estate lots range from 1 to 10-plus acres, including a variety of golf course, riverfront, river access, hilltop and valley view home sites. Showcasing the area’s top builders, the home styles at Cordillera Ranch include Tuscan, Old World Mediterranean, traditional Texas Hill Country ranches and cutting edge Hill Country transitional, which subtly blends in some of today’s contemporary trends. The community’s prestigious Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course ranks as one of the best in the Lone Star State, and its 40,000 square-foot clubhouse wrought from native limestone and hard woods, is a favorite gathering spot for residents to chat, dine and make memories. ■
Cordillera Ranch invites you to come experience the finest in Hill Country living. For more information, visit www.CordilleraRanch.com, call 888-66-RANCH or stop by the Visitors Center at 808 Highway 46 East, Boerne, 78006.

reen has been the traditional holiday color for generations – trees, plants, clothing. But past generations were also green (sustainable) with their decorations. Fresh trees from the forest, cranberries, pop corn and gingerbread men decorations and handmade gifts, from home-baked cookies to hand-knitted scarves and sweaters. Today, the trend has been the most costly, unsustainable décor and gifts. What was a peaceful, loving time of the year has turned into a helter-skelter maze of exhaustion and over-spending, with a hit to the environment to boot. But, according to Sustainable Baby Steps (www.sustainablebabysteps.com) there

are at least thirty easy steps to creating a greener, happier more relaxed Christmas covering everything from gifts, food, décor and quality time and avoiding the multi-tons of holiday trash that goes to the landfill contributing to greenhouse pollution. Most importantly, the website reminds us to slow down, relax and connect with the season and with others. Reduce spending on gifts, use energy efficient LED lighting with timers and hang meaningful handmade ornaments of wood, metal or cloth that will be kept and treasured for generations. Decorations that you make yourself mean more and better reflect the meaning of the season. Blogger/speaker Sharon Glasgow (sharon@sharonglasgow.com) took the idea a step further and created a tree decorated with preserved fruits, cranberry and popcorn strings and home baked gingerbread men. Her ongoing A FEW PILLOWS blog covers the CAN CHANGE AN ORDINARY ROOM natural way to INTO A HOLIDAY celebrate. RETREAT. Other natural touches she suggests are including acorns, pine cones and cinnamon sticks thread on waxed dental floss and sprayed with eco friendly shellac to preserve them in your holiday décor plan. Thread the goodies with wire
and you can create a wreath with fresh greenery. Popcorn ball ornaments can be made using sugar, cranberry relish and juice, corn syrup, vinegar and popcorn. Mix ingredients into a firm mass and form into balls, stick with ornament hangers and they’re ready to hang (or eat... not the hangers!). To prepare the fruit ornaments, slice oranges, grapefruit, limes, lemons, apples and pears (centers only) about one-half inch thick removing ends and set out to dry. Put sliced fruit in 175-degree oven for seven hours. Use clear craft varnish or decoupage to lightly cover fruit. When dry, flip and coat other side. Pop holes for stringing and hang. On the professional side, holiday decorator Sir Victor Garcia has been thinking about creating Christmas memories all year long. Using fruit and recyclable items to punctuate his out-of-the-ordinary holiday decorations he and his staff combine the naturals with luxurious touches. Fresh cranberries strung on sliver wire wind over votive candles and natural greenery. Fresh limes and pineapple become the focus of a pine wreath and a bank of over-sized votive candles illuminate whole areas of the rooms he has decorated. He organized Christmas Holiday & Party Decorators more than ten years ago and has been a favorite in residences as well commercial, retail and institutional facilities ever since. (sirvictormgarcia@yahoo.com)
SIMPLE GREEN Not into big time holiday decorations? Then opt for a couple of bright holiday themed throw pillows for the couch and lounge chair that can become annual favorites. Scatter a few poinsettias around the house. Hang some tinsel and/or add glittery stems to existing plants. Hang a holiday banner or wreath on your front door. Spray pine or spice fragrance to create holiday air. Get into the spirit by baking cookies or other special treats. Donate gifts to make a happy Christmas for less fortunate children or bring the holiday spirit to a senior center by donating food, decorations and talent. And remember to recycle for a cleaner, brighter, healthier New Year. Have a Happy Green Holiday! ■ NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2016 NHOME /

apatio Springs Hill Country Resort was named as the #1 Most Improved Public Golf Course in the U.S. by Golf Inc. magazine. A total of 10 golf facilities, including private clubs and public courses, were recognized for making sizeable changes and upgrades to emerge stronger, better and more financially sound. “We are honored to receive this recognition from Golf Inc. magazine,” said Caleb DuBose, Tapatio Resort General Manager. “Due to the commitment by Northview Hotel Group and the hiring of golf course architectural firm Tripp Davis and Associates to come in and renovate our golf course, we can proudly say we are once again one of the top golf destinations in the state of Texas.” The $2.0 million golf course improvement plan at Tapatio Springs included complete bunker and tee work, regrading of fairways to improve drainage and playing surfaces, new artful bunker designs to increase the drama and strategy of many holes, resurfacing of greens, and the installation of a new practice putting green. The result is a stunning transformation of an outdated landscape of tired holes into a stimulating “must play” golf experience. The restored golf course, together with the renovated clubhouse and La Cascada Table & Bar create a truly Texas, intimate gathering place in the heart of Hill Country, ideal for private golf tournaments and event weekends. Ideally situated, Tapatio Springs hosts some of the area’s most popular golf events, including the George Strait Roping Classic Golf Tournament, and Vaqueros Del Mar, the annual Troops First Foundation fundraiser which raised $1.1 m last month. Country music legend George Strait is a co-owner of the resort. According to Director of Golf Matt Reams, “We have sold 113 new golf memberships this year and we will finish out the year

Smart Home INDEPENDENCE FOR WOUNDED VETS
PHOTOS COURTESY OF GYSGT. TEJADA
// BY: JESS PASSANANTI
G
unnery Sergeant Guillermo Tejada of San Antonio was on his third tour in 3rd Battalion 5th Marines in Afghanistan when he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and lost both of his legs. After countless surgeries and intense rehabilitation, GySgt. Tejada struggled to adjust to life as a double amputee. Daily routines at home previously done with ease, such as taking a shower, turning on the television, and adjusting the lights, were extremely difficult. What was once simple was now complicated by living life in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, GySgt. Tejada is
54
/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2016
one of many wounded veterans that return to find it arduous, and often unmanageable, to live in a traditional home. Severely wounded veterans are physically limited in the standard house: carpeted areas don’t allow wheelchairs to move freely, appliances are inaccessible,
and technology can’t be controlled without physically pressing an out-ofreach button. Shortly following GySgt. Tejada’s return to the U.S., he was contacted by the Gary Sinise Foundation’s Restoring Independence, Supporting Empowerment (R.I.S.E.) Program, which works to eliminate these issues by designing, building and donating one-of-a-kind, specially adapted smart homes for wounded veterans and their families. The Gary Sinise Foundation sought to supply Tejada and his family with a customized smart home in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas, that would guarantee him at-home independence and allow him to freely control all of his home’s technology.
“Each of our projects are unique, and designed specifically for the veteran and their family. Guillermo's home is 100 percent tailored to his injuries, and the way the entire family will use the home,” explains Judy Otter, Executive Director of the Gary Sinise Foundation. In addition to incorporating architectural and structural adjustments, GySgt. Tejada’s new residence offers a formerly unfeasible level of functionality thanks to an innovative smart home automation system. With donations from connected home solutions provider Core Brands and Texas Hill Country smart home automation system design and integration firm Sterling Home Technologies, they were able to built an entirely connected smart home based on an ELAN Entertainment and Control System. Chris Edelen of Sterling Home Technologies built the ELAN system to enable the remote control of the home’s entertainment, lighting, security, shades, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), directly from an App on a smart phone, tablet, or easily accessible in-wall touch panel. Through the system, GySgt. Tejada can control his home with the tap of a button on a handheld device. He can turn the lights on or off without struggling to reach for a light switch or asking a family member, adjust the temperature with a simple button press, open or close his new Q-Motion motorized window shades instantly, and change the song playing on his Niles Auriel multi-room audio system, remotely, in any room. The residence’s physical design is also tailored to meet GySgt. Tejada’s needs. Hard surface floors are incorporated throughout the residence to help him move around easily, wall outlets are placed higher in some areas of the home to meet the height of his wheelchair, unique pull-down shelves are utilized in the upper kitchen cabinets to give him access, and a large roll-in shower with a bench seat is built into the master bedroom. The smart home, recently completed in midSeptember, revolutionizes the way GySgt. Tejada can live in, move about, and control his home. “We are happy and honored to have great organizations such as Core Brands and Sterling Home Technologies involved in the building of this specially adapted smart home for GySgt. Tejada,” says Scott Schaeperkoetter, Director of Operations, R.I.S.E program. “They allowed us to put the emphasis on the ‘smart’ portion of their new home and truly make this home their forever home.” ■

Food Fight NATIONAL KITCHEN AND BATH ASSOCIATION // BY: DONNA REED // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS
T
he second annual FOOD FIGHT San Antonio was held on Thursday October 27th and hosted by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Galleries on North Park. The Food Fight is an event held by the South Plains chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association to raise money for charity. The National Kitchen and Bath Association is a non-profit trade organization of Kitchen and Bath professional’s who set the standard for Kitchen and Bath design in the industry. The idea for the FOOD FIGHT event was born out of the NKBA’s desire to have fun while giving back to the community. Last year was the first FOOD FIGHT San Antonio, the organization raised almost $9,000 for ”Operation Give Back” another of the NKBA’s projects in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers ASID, the two organizations joined forces to fund and build a master suite for a wounded veteran. This year the NKBA brought back the Food Fight by popular demand to raise money for the Kinetic Kids Organization. Kinetic Kids is a non-profit organization that provides sports and recreational programs for kids with special needs. Without this wonderful organization, the kids who participate in the Kinetic Kids programs would not typically have the chance to know what it’s like to be a part of a sports team, or take a dance class. An appearance was made by the Kinetic Kids Cheerleaders who helped pick winning raffle tickets! Five cooking teams that included NKBA Members, Palmer Todd, Triton Stone, Travis Tile, Mayu Group and Linda Leroux, Ferguson Team aka “Blazin Babes” participated. Teams were given a list of 3 secret ingredients from which they had to incorporate at least one of those ingredients into their dishes. Also in keeping with
58
/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2016
the Kinetic Kids spirit each team decorated their kitchen according to the teams assigned sport theme. Teams were judged based on presentation, palatability, texture, and overall presentation. There was also a fan favorite category in which attendees voted for their favorite dishes which ranged from blue cheese stuffed meatballs, to cheese stuffed dates wrapped in bacon, to a pear tart drizzled with truffle oil. When Two Worlds Collide INTERIOR DESIGN MEETS FASHION 2016 AT INTERIOR TRADE CARTEL // BY: PEGGY ZETTNER, DONNA REED, NICHELLE HOSLEY AND NAN KRIGBAUM // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS
N
ovember 17th marked the 2nd Annual Novel Fabrics / ITC presents - Interior Design Meets Fashion event hosted by Interior Trade Cartel, a To-the-Trade Interior Design showroom located in Stone Oak. The concept of the two worlds colliding was birthed out of ITC’s desire to celebrate an evening of food and fun with Interior and Fashion designers while simultaneously giving back to the San Antonio community. Last year’s, Interior Design Meets Fashion Show raised almost $1,500.00 for “A Human Project”. This year, Interior Design Meets Fashion returned with an even greater expectation to raise money to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities Capital Campaign. The event featured beautiful, innovative garments made entirely of Novel Fabric, designed by San Antonio and Austin fashion design students in ages ranging from 16 to 23. Austin Hosley (The Art Institute Austin), Kayley Witt and Alejandrina Sanchez (University of Incarnate Word), Kayla Bandy (Johnson High School), and Melanie Alva (Reagan High School) transformed beautiful Novel upholstery and drapery fabrics into fabulous runway garments that were later auctioned for the Ronald McDonald House Charities raising nearly $6,000.00. Also featured was Lauren Nicole, a notable, 16 year old, local fashion designer who has graced both New York and LA Fashion Week runways and Chantal Lewis, a 26 year old designer from Houston. And special guest, TV’s “Project Runway Allstar”, Anthony Ryan Auld, owner and operator of Ant Hill Designs Boutique here in San Antonio staged his second runway show with Interior

Design Meets Fashion. Other contributing designers were Rosie Allen, Mary Carter Janice Harker and Laverne Witherspoon. Held outside of ITC’s showroom, Interior Design Meets Fashion Show welcomed over 275 people. Galpao Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse fired up their grills and sizzled up some delicious meats and tasty sides. The aroma was simply amazing. Interior Design Meets Fashion 2016 was sponsored by some very generous companies and individuals. Novel donated all the fabrics used to create the amazing runway pieces. Other sponsors were CKC Custom Homes, Lighting Inc. generously donated funds as well as gifts to raffle, Ferguson Bath Kitchen and Lighting Galleries, Fiber Seal of San Antonio, AG&M Granite and Marble, State Street Produce, Trish Najim Designs, Elite Styles, NHOME and Jason Roberts Photography. ITC, expressed a heartfelt “Thank You” to all sponsors for making this charity event a great success. This, hugely successful second year, labor-of-love IDMF show was created and coordinated by the very talented Nichelle Hosley. IDMF 2016 would also not have been possible without Novel Fabrics and the Interior Trade Cartel staff and the IDMF committee: Ria Rivers of Nique School of Modeling, fashion stylist, Donnie Williams, production assistant Kantrell Andrews and many others. When Interior Design collides with Fashion, the result is a vibrant runway awash in beauty, art and color! ■
