’TIS THE SEASON FOR MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR. ALTHOUGH WE ARE BUSIER THAN USUAL AND EVERYONE IS TRYING TO WRAP UP PROJECTS AND PREPARE FOR THE HOLIDAYS, MOST OF US ARE IN HIGH SPIRITS, SMILING AND LAUGHING JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE. As you’re planning your holiday and preparing your home for guests and entertaining, consider using a professional designer to not only lighten your load, but to give you the best of new and elegance for the season and New Year. One notable design group is our cover feature, Interior Trade Cartel (ITC). Even if you’re a DIY, they have selections that will suit your style. Pictured with me is Peggy Zettner, owner of ITC and also a dear friend. I have admired her design creativity for years. In addition to having talented designers, they also have a heart to give back. Recently they held a fashion show using Novel upholstery fabrics and partnered with local designers to create beautiful and exotic outfits that were auctioned off with proceeds to support the non-profit for abused children, A Human Project. PROUD MEMBER OF: Interior Designer, Nichelle Hosley coordinated this well attended show. San Antonio has a lot of great designers. Recently some local ASID designers received well deserved awards at the annual Pinnacle Awards ceremony. It is our honor to have been the media sponsor for that event. Enjoy the pages showcasing several amazing designers’ work. Our local ASID members also love supporting non-profits. Their most recent event was Food Fight San Antonio benefiting Operation Giveback. As many of our readers know, at NHOME we are passionate about giving back to the community; we love supporting our clients who take the time to raise money for worthy causes. We were recently privileged to spend the evening with wounded warriors and military officers at The Grill at Leon Springs for the Wish For Our Heroes fundraising event. Master Chef Thierry Burkle delighted our taste buds, and thousands of dollars were raised to benefit local wounded military families. The need is great, and donations are always needed. Kudos to former Army Captain, Jeff Wells, the visionary behind the Wounded Warriors non-profit organization. We hope that you will be in the spirit of giving this holiday season and take the time to find a non-profit you care about that will greatly benefit from your donation from the heart. In the spirit of giving let's keep in mind the reason for this wonderful season. Happy Holidays from NHOME to your Home!

or your next catering event, The Grill at Leon Springs is the place to call. Most people are shocked to learn that this acclaimed restaurant and renowned master chef will come to you. Those “in the know” call Chef Thierry Burkle; he makes even the smallest event appear grand. It’s not often that I have the pleasure of personally knowing the subjects within these pages. But tonight as I write, The Grill is catering my second book launch party. Chef/owner Thierry Burkle and I met late one afternoon to discuss how I visualized my event. There is almost nothing better than sitting on the patio at The Grill relaxing with a beverage. If you’ve got a busy schedule, you don’t have to sit face to face with Burkle to discuss your next event; you can make a phone call, but

22

when we finished talking I planned on meeting friends there for Happy Hour, so it made sense to make it a double. I had a pretty good idea of the type of presentation I wanted since The Grill, caters many of the events I attend as a Realtor, in addition to having catered my first book launch last year. But if this is your first experience with The Grill you can rest assured that they know how to present your best foot forward. Even though I know what sets The Grill apart from everyone else, I needed a quote, so I asked the question. In his French accent, Burkle said: “We treat you like family. We pay attend to the details. Our foods are fresh, from scratch, and from the heart is our motto.” The Grill’s Thierry Burkle, chef/owner and Armand Obadia,

manager/owner are passionate about what they do. For them a restaurant is not a business but a way of life. When you go to the Grill, or have them cater your event, you are being welcomed into their hearts and home. Both Burkle and Obadia, oversee every aspect of the restaurant, bar and catering operations on a daily basis. Chef Burkle, began his culinary career in his native Paris, moving to Washington D.C. to continue his work with French chef Michel Laudier at the highly regarded Rive Gauche. Setting sights on San Antonio, he and his partners opened L’Etoile in 1984 which closed in 2009, shortly after Burkle and Obadia opened The Grill at Leon Springs. The accolades and awards continue to follow Burkle. Armand Obadia moved to the United States from his native Israel in 1974. He brings more than 35 years of restaurant management and ownership experience to The Grill. I’m guessing you’ll be calling The Grill at Leon Springs for your next event, but if you need more information call 210-698-8797 or go to www. leonspringsgrill.com. ■

COVER STORY

Calm,all is Bright all is

Decorating For The Holidays // BY: NAN KRIGBAUM // PHOTOS BY: ART HOSELY

28

/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2015

FOR MANY THE THOUGHT OF THE APPROACHING HOLIDAY SEASON IS DAUNTING TO SAY THE LEAST, AND EVEN PANIC-PRODUCING TO OTHERS! SOME DREAD IT BASED ON THE MEMORIES OF PAST YEARS, EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS OR COMPARISONS TO SOMEONE WHO SEEMS EVERY YEAR, TO CREATE A FLAWLESS HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE. Comparing your efforts to others is futile for a myriad of reasons: You may not have the same amount of “free time” or resources. You may be great at many things but decorating might not be on that list. You may not even feel the need to “go all out” as others do. That’s OK! If decorating is more stress-invoking than fun, it may be time to hire a professional. The holidays should reflect you, your loved ones and what you cherish. An interior designer, decorator or a specialist in decorating for holidays and special occasions can help you define how you want to express what this time of year means to you. He or she can look at the materials that you have to work with and make suggestions as to what you might add or edit. Sometimes fresh eyes will see things that others wouldn’t. Maybe your 10-year-old garland is a looking a little forlorn and it’s time to replace it. Or perhaps it needs another element added to it to spruce it up, like grosgrain or burlap ribbon. There are no absolute rules as to how you must define your personality for the holidays and what you hold most dear. According to Peggy Zettner, President of Interior Trade Cartel, “Decorate the holidays with things you cherish. I love to collect Christmas decorations like these Russian Santa's. There are no two just alike. I also collect ornaments from my travels and ornaments that have been handed down through family generations. This is my favorite time of year. A time to reflect on past memories and a time to create new ones. The chill in the air (we hope), the lights, and the all the beautiful treasured decorations all contribute to a beautiful holiday. The most treasured holiday memories are those we make with the people that are important in our lives.”

TIPS FOR SHARING WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY Love of Family & Friends: Create a display with framed photos taken during previous holiday seasons. The frames could be somewhat similar, i.e. all in silver and gold, or all the photos are printed in black and white which will keep the focus on the photos themselves. The frames could be displayed on a table top or even placed within a tree. Another fun way would be to hang them along NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2015 NHOME /

29

“MIXING METALS OF GOLD, PEWTER, NICKEL AND CHAMPAGNE IS DE RIGUEUR AND MAKES FOR SENSATIONAL HOLIDAY DECOR!” a hallway and connect them with a large, festive ribbon that swags between each photo. The Thrill of Travel: Perhaps you’ve collected beautiful pieces from far flung places. A clever decorating professional can find a way to unite your collection in a meaningful way. She might stage them in an étagère and weave candles or lights throughout to add some light. A small tree that has branches filled with postcards from around the world can evoke wonderful memories and great conversations! A Passion for Fashion: Do you have an amazing scarf collection? Use it as garland up a staircase and weave in lights and tulle! In the mid 1980s, my roommate and I were broke but determined to decorate. We pooled our resources and bought a tree and some lights. We were young and had not begun to collect ornaments nor was that in our budget. This was the era of the GIANT, 80s earrings and so we took our favorite, huge, sparkly earrings, hung them on the tree. To this day it was one of the most meaningful years of holiday decorating and my friend Cathy and I recall it fondly. Tips for Setting Up and Taking Down A professional can help you to organize

30

/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2015

My clients are transplants to this area and they consider their Texas friends to be their family. Each year they throw a holiday party for their friends with a theme and their invitations reflect the theme while their entry sets the stage. Both are avid bird enthusiasts and their yard is a sanctuary for all kinds of birds. They adore Cardinals and have spent years collecting them Last year their party had a Cardinal theme. - MaryBeth Edgerton

your decorations, find the right containers to keep them safe and streamline the process of setting up and taking down. Photographing what works is imperative! When you have created a truly pleasing display, be sure you keep a photographic record of it. You may even want to store all the items from each display together. For example, if you love the menorah display on your dining table and want to be sure to duplicate it next year, keep all the items together in one box or container and tape a photo of that display to the container so you’ll know exactly what you’re pulling out of the attic next year! Try something different after the take-down. For many the home feels gloomy after the lights come down and the candles are blown out. Maybe it’s time to rearrange the furniture with the help of your decorator. Or invest in a new piece of art or a beautiful rug that you can’t wait to display when the decorations are put away. Reflect the Reason for the Season The holiday season means many things to many people. Many look forward to it as a time to reflect on years past. For some it’s the very beginning of what will become family traditions. No matter your reason, it should be a time of joy and celebration. Investing in the help of a professional can make it both calm and bright. ■

We spent several years in Germany, while my husband was active duty in the US Air Force. We visited many of the European Christmas markets and sampled the local holiday treats along with the popular Christmas drinks. We also had the opportunity to do some extensive traveling. We took a special trip to Waechtersbach, Germany, where I purchased my favorite red Christmas dishes. Then, to complete my holiday table, we went on to Prague the capital of the Czech Republic. I splurged on an assortment of beautiful crystal candle sticks and purchased a set of stunning glassware. I am reminded of these cherished times when I set my Christmas table. All of the fond memories of those years spent in Europe come flooding back. Â - Amy Webb

T

he San Antonio Board of REALTORS® hosted its fourth annual Heroes Welcome Home program on October 29, an education initiative preparing San Antonio area REALTORS® to serve the housing needs of our military community. “San Antonio is home to so many of our country’s military personnel,” said Mary Ann Jeffers, SABOR’s 2015 Chairman of the Board. “These men and women often have specialized needs when it comes to buying and selling property and this program gives REALTORS® the tools they need to be the best resource to our city’s military members.” While this is an annual event, the subject matter changes each year to ensure the REALTORS® in attendance learn diverse information and the latest trends affecting military moves. This year’s event included topics such as understanding basic training, working with base housing and learning about financial assistance available to veterans. Contact information for REALTORS® completing the program will be entered into a publicly accessible database, allowing military families seeking the expertise of a professional to be provided a list of REALTORS® who have taken the course. This list can be found at www. saheroeswelcomehome.org. In support of the ever-growing community of military, SABOR not only hosts this educational event for REALTORS® to assist returning and relocating military families in achieving the dream of homeownership; all net proceeds of the event will be donated to a local veterans organization. “In 2014 we were proud to present over $10,000 to the San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families,” said Angela Shields, SABOR’s President and CEO. “This is a very special program and we look forward to being able to give back to our city’s military families again this year.” ■

The Magik Theatre WHERE IMAGINATION IS EDUCATION

T

he Magik Theatre celebrates it’s 22nd season with Magik Adventures unlike any before. Shelley Weber, Director of Education & Outreach said, “We are very proud of our arts programming at The Magik Theatre. Our focus is on the creative life of each individual child and helping them to learn life skills through theatre skills. Each program is geared toward providing lessons in empathy, teamwork, accountability, the proper way to deliver constructive criticism and gives the students the satisfaction and excitement of being part of creating art. I strongly believe in the value of arts education for all children and I feel that our education programs allow students the ability to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of art, themselves and their peers. We have many students who return to our programming and performances year after year and to see who they are becoming as blossoming adults is just awe-inspiring. Magik is assisting in the growth of some really amazing people and we are proud to have been entrusted with this great responsibility.” Tiffany Maltos, Education Programs Manager, explained The Teens At Risk Program, “X-

The students in the program come from different economic, ethnic, and social backgrounds and must learn to put aside these conflicts to form a cohesive troupe. Each workshop concludes with a sharing of an original work for friends and family that speaks to the obstacles and social issues that matter to the students.” “As we enter our 22nd season, we are proud to have raised an entire generation of theatre-goers who have gained an appreciation for the performing arts. The Magik Theatre expects these young adults to continue their love of live theatre and support it here in San Antonio and wherever their future takes them,” concluded Alan Petlin, President, Board of Directors. Young Professionals Use FaceTime SOCIAL MEDIA IS A GROWING TREND IN THE HOME BUYING PROCESS // SPECIAL TO NHOME // PHOTOGRAPHY: GREG HARRISON

LEFT TO RIGHT: SHAWN MCGUIRE, SALES MANAGER AT ALTEZA, KAJEL, SAMAR SHAH (THE SHAH FAMILY)

W

hen young professionals Samar and Kajel Shah found out they were moving to San Antonio, they researched their options on Facebook and then toured Alteza Residences via FaceTime. They were immediately hooked. Eleven months later, the Shahs continue to call Alteza Residences home and couldn’t be happier. The Shahs aren't the only ones using social media to find a home. In fact, more and more people are turning to social media in their home search. For those moving to a new city, like the Shah family, FaceTime makes it easy to tour a potential home without making the trip. Future buyers also use Facebook and Instagram to compare various homes on the market. A quick Internet search can even tell a homebuyer all about the neighborhood and community in which they are looking. The growing social media trend certainly

eases and expedites the home buying process. “More and more people are using social media to search for a new home, “said Shawn McGuire, sales manager of Alteza Residences. “With the Internet at our fingertips, homebuyers are able to take virtual tours of homes on the market, whether using FaceTime or website pictures. This growing trend definitely makes the process much easier for everyone involved.” High-rise living is a true paradise for young couples like the Shahs. Offering five-star resort amenities and a maintenance-free lifestyle, Alteza is ideal for any young professional looking to live downtown. Residents can easily go to dinner, explore the historic districts of San Antonio, or enjoy drinks with friends by simply walking down the street. “Alteza’s location was the true selling point. We are new to the city and still young so we wanted to have easy access to all that downtown has to offer,” said Samar. “We also love that the floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive balcony give us spectacular views of the city, which is something you can’t get in the suburbs. Not to mention the rooftop pool and Jacuzzi, which is a great place to relax after work. We truly picked the best place to live in San Antonio.” Alteza Residences, located in the rich and diverse cultural center of downtown San Antonio, sits atop the Grand Hyatt overlooking the booming downtown. Alteza Residences is comprised of 147 exquisitely designed, spacious residences boasting up to 4,451 square feet. Prices begin in the mid $300s for onebedroom homes, mid $500s for more spacious two-bedroom homes and spectacular penthouses are available starting at $998,900. Alteza Residences combines luxury living with the exceptional service of a world-class hotel to make the living experience incomparable. Ranked #2 by Forbes Magazine “ for big cities stealing financial jobs from New York City,” San Antonio is recognized nationally as a city in motion. The city’s downtown is known as a chic urban address for up and coming living. Alteza Residences is San Antonio’s top selling condominium and was awarded Downtown San Antonio’s “Best of Residential” by Downtown Alliance San Antonio. Alteza is located at 610 E. INTERIOR TRADE CARTEL MEETS FASHION // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS

INTERIOR TRADE CARTEL presented “Interior Design Meets Fashion”. It was sponsored by Novel Fabrics and was a huge success; surely an event to remember. Five local fashion designers: Austin Hosley (The Art Institute-Austin), Jerry Parker (The Art Institute San Antonio), Laverne Witherspoon (San Antonio), Olivia Willms (Incarnate Word), and Shanavier McClemore (San Antonio) transformed our beautiful Novel upholstery fabrics into fabulous runway garments which were later auctioned for “A Human Project” which aids abused children. Special guest Anthony Ryan Auld gave us a glimpse of what’s to come in his 2016. The event was a huge success! ■
