or your next catering event, The Grill at Leon Springs is the place to call. Most people are shocked to learn that this acclaimed restaurant and renowned master chef will come to you. Those “in the know” call Chef Thierry Burkle; he makes even the smallest event appear grand. It’s not often that I have the pleasure of personally knowing the subjects within these pages. But tonight as I write, The Grill is catering my second book launch party. Chef/owner Thierry Burkle and I met late one afternoon to discuss how I visualized my event. There is almost nothing better than sitting on the patio at The Grill relaxing with a beverage. If you’ve got a busy schedule, you don’t have to sit face to face with Burkle to discuss your next event; you can make a phone call, but

when we finished talking I planned on meeting friends there for Happy Hour, so it made sense to make it a double. I had a pretty good idea of the type of presentation I wanted since The Grill caters many of the events I attend as a Realtor, in addition to having catered my first book launch last year. But if this is your first experience with The Grill, you can rest assured that they know how to present your best foot forward. Even though I know what sets The Grill apart from everyone else, I needed a quote, so I asked the question. In his French accent, Burkle said: “We treat you like family. We pay attend to the details. Our foods are fresh, from scratch, and from the heart is our motto.” The Grill’s Thierry Burkle, chef/owner and Armand Obadia,

manager/owner, are passionate about what they do. For them a restaurant is not a business but a way of life. When you go to the Grill, or have them cater your event, you are being welcomed into their hearts and home. Both Burkle and Obadia, oversee every aspect of the restaurant, bar and catering operations on a daily basis. Chef Burkle began his culinary career in his native Paris, moving to Washington D.C. to continue his work with French chef Michel Laudier at the highly regarded Rive Gauche. Setting sights on San Antonio, he and his partners opened L’Etoile in 1984 which closed in 2009, shortly after Burkle and Obadia opened The Grill at Leon Springs. The accolades and awards continue to follow Burkle. Armand Obadia moved to the United States from his native Israel in 1974. He brings more than 35 years of restaurant management and ownership experience to The Grill. I’m guessing you’ll be calling The Grill at Leon Springs for your next event, but if you need more information call 210-698-8797 or go to www. leonspringsgrill.com. ■

n 1970, the first Copenhagen Imports opened in Phoenix, Arizona. Based on their passion for good design and their desire to have a positive impact on home furnishings in the South-Southwest, founders Tony Christensen and Erik Hansen brought a new type of design dedicated solely to Danish Modern style. “The rest”, as they say, “is history”. After opening stores in Tempe, Tucson and Scottsdale, Copenhagen moved to Texas with stores in El Paso, San Antonio and Austin. Although the number of stores has grown, Copenhagen has remained family owned and operated by original owner Erik Hansen, younger brother Jorgen Hansen and Erik’s son, Jens Hansen. Jens Hansen established the San Antonio store in 1990 and made it his family’s home for 26 years. Hansen says, “This ensures that one thing remains constant: our passion for design. Only the

highest quality products of good design and value are brought into the Copenhagen lines. We’re proud of everything we sell, at every price point and we stand behind these products with our family reputation.” The minute you walk into the Copenhagen showroom, you feel the difference. This is not your usual retail experience. No cold, hard-lined contemporary here. You’re drawn in to what feels like an art gallery, only the room settings are filled with beautiful pieces of furniture in which the artistic design is part of the function. According to John Milk, San Antonio showroom manager, “We like people to feel like they have been welcomed into our home. We love it when people say they’re just looking; to which we respond ‘We love having you look! Please enjoy and let us know if you have any questions’. That’s our style.” Copenhagen’s philosophy is simply stated, according to founder Jens Hansen, “We believe clean design is more sophisticated than heavy ornamentation. The function of the piece is defined and enhanced by the lines that create the design and materials that compose it.” For instance, a chair alone on a pedestal becomes a sculpture. Place it in your home and it becomes a beautiful, integral part of everyday life. In the course of 45 years in business, Copenhagen has built relationships with a solid core of manufacturers from Italy, France, Norway and of course, Denmark. The European influence adds an air of sophistication found nowhere else. Its slightly smaller scale enables the pieces to adapt to any style home setting. San Antonio showroom manager, John Milk says, “Furniture shouldn’t ‘steal the show’ from a beautiful space. Good design, which is the hallmark of the Copenhagen collections, can mix in and enhance every setting.” The San Antonio showroom is a smorgasbord of sleek, stylish furnishings. Contemporary style is the fasting growing trend in the home furnishings industry today. As San Antonio has grown and become more cosmopolitan, so has the demand for a more sophisticated look. As young professionals increase as a buying segment of the population, so the

trend has gone from traditional to transitional to contemporary. Because of the sophistication of the look, there is the perception that it is all very high end. Manager Milk says, “Not so! The high end is in the quality of the product, but our range of pricing can work within most budgets. He encourages clients to bring in their floor plans, talk with the experienced staff about your home and lifestyle. ment. Using furniture, accessories and artwork procured globally, the Copenhagen staff will work with you to integrate new pieces into existing interiors or start from scratch to furnish your home or office. In home consultations can be scheduled once you have visited the showroom and acquainted yourself with a staff member and enjoyed the look and feel of the Copenhagen ambiance. The staff will also collaborate with architects, general
contractors and any other design professionals involved to ensure that your interior design vision comes to fruition. The website, copenhagenliving.com, gives you just an insight into the beauty and functionality of the designs. New and trendy pieces such as a unique leaf storing mechanism for a glass dining table or stunning tables of ceramic laid on glass cannot be appreciated with a picture. The Copenhagen difference cannot just be seen but it must be experienced. At the impressive San
Antonio showroom, John Milk and his staff have created just such an experience. They invite you to come see how they can use clean, beautiful and functional pieces to design your home for the way you live. â–

ver thought of shopping for modern, classy furniture in your backyard? Depending upon how big your yard is and how many unwanted trees you have, re-using those trees is the eco-friendly way to go. Green Wood Milling Company, a San Antonio urban logger, retrieves trees on new developments for developers and environmental agencies to encourage forest growth. They also service single and multifamily residences by removing damaged trees on the property, trucking them to their saw mill and recycling them into logs, custom furniture, fireplace mantels, boards, beams, wood craft supplies and other wood products. Owner Attie Jonker, a South African transplant to San Antonio, came loaded with talent in a variety of artistic areas, but hadn’t thought about transferring his absolute love of trees…look, feel, smell, grain … into a thriving business. Unwanted trees and stumps can be removed from your yard and turned into whatever you want. For instance, more than 60 trees were removed from a ranch in Boerne, with many of them turned into modern furniture that is used at the ranch. All items created from the trees retain the natural beauty and unique graining of the wood and are one-of-a-kind pieces. Sculptors and do-it-yourselfers rely on Green Wood

Composed of aggregate marble, granite, stone and natural fibers cements, this sculptural CB2 floating dining table easily keeps its beauty with car wax or stone polish. Handmade in a shop powered by fossil-free fuels to avoid CO2 emissions it is equally at home inside or out.
Granad drinkware patterns get their hefty rustic charm from recycled glass. They're all part of the CB2 collection. Soy and corn-based foam and fibers replace petroleum-based foam in most CB2 upholstered pieces with frames and suspension systems partially constructed of recycled steel. All of this eco-friendliness is available at no extra customer cost. New Styles, Technology Make Garage Doors An Appealing Upgrade // SPECIAL TO NHOME
E
ven though they’re the largest, heaviest moving objects in our homes, garage doors are easily overlooked. But with advances in styles, materials, energy efficiency and even smartphone control options, it’s a great time to think about updating your garage door system.
A new garage door can give an instant boost to any home’s appearance. Today’s garage doors come in a variety of exciting looks and materials, such carriage house style doors and affordable faux wood styles that are a fraction of the cost of hardwood. “The new styles actually enhance the curb appeal and value of a home,” said Randy Oliver, president of Hollywood-Crawford Garage Door Company. Hollywood-Crawford, which has provided garage doors, openers and repair services to San Antonio and the surrounding areas since 1947, offers a tool on the company’s website (www. hollywoodcrawford.com) that allows homeowners to upload a photo of their home and select from the many styles, materials, finishes and accessories available to create the perfect custom garage door. As a home upgrade, new garage doors also offer a high return on investment. A garage door replacement recoups 91.5 percent of its cost upon resale in the San Antonio area, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2016 Cost Vs Value Report. Among exterior home upgrades that pay off, new garage doors offer a return second only to new roofs, according to a report by the

National Association of Realtors. Additionally, homeowners rated new garage doors as the exterior upgrade that brought them the most happiness.
WI-FI DOOR OPENERS OFFER PEACE OF MIND If you’ve ever left home and wondered if your garage door is open, new technology makes checking as easy as tapping on a smartphone. Wi-Fi garage door openers let homeowners manage their garage door opening systems and even indoor home lighting by smartphone whether they are across town or across the country. Smartphone control is available in both new garage door opening systems and in retrofit packages for garage door systems with safety photo eyes. “The Wi-Fi apps provide peace of mind and control over this home entry point. They notify you if your garage door is open and allow you to close it from your phone, as well as allow you to let family, friends or deliveries in remotely,” Oliver said. “You can even turn your home’s lights on from the app whether you are just arriving home or you’re out of town.”

garage doors are especially important since many families use their garage as their primary entrance into the home. When other garage walls and ceilings are insulated, an insulated garage door can be important in creating a more comfortable climate and slowing the transfer of heat into living areas. It’s a feature that’s increasingly in demand among homeowners. “The majority of doors we sell are insulated,” Oliver says. “They create a more comfortable and less extreme temperature range in the garage, which can contribute to the energy efficiency of the entire home.” Hollywood-Crawford offers a complete line of quality residential and commercial overhead garage doors and openers. The company has received the Super Service award from Angie’s List for nine consecutive years and is the only IDEA Accredited Garage Door Dealer in the San Antonio area. ■

Location Destination Shopping GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAY’S // BY: KIM YOUNG

/ NHOME SEPTEMBER//OCTOBER 2016
I
love Fall and I love shopping! I especially love holiday shopping when the weather has cooled off. There is no place better place to shop than San Antonio and the surrounding hill country. And what goes with shopping? I suggest lunch, an afternoon refreshment of coffee or yogurt, or if you’re shopping late, you can stop for a glass of wine or a margarita, especially if your feet are tired (or not tired, but a glass of wine sounds like a marvelous idea to you). If you’re new to San Antonio, you might not know about the great shopping centers scattered around our city. I’ve been to all of them. You might think I’m exaggerating until you see my closet; I should be ashamed ... but I’m not. Every store is like a box of chocolates; Plus, I have four progeny to shop for as well

special holiday shopping
The Vineyard is off 1604 and Blanco. They have a variety of places you’ll definitely want to check out, most specifically Copenhagen, San Antonio’s largest showroom dedicated to contemporary furniture and accessories. Go late so you can stop at J. Prime for dinner. North Star Mall is an internationally acclaimed shopping destination convenient to everywhere, has almost everything with 200 specialty stores, and is only two miles from the airport! If you’ve got young children be sure to check out the Disney Store. And to make sure your shopping experience is top notch they offer a variety of services and amenities to ensure you have an enjoyable shopping experience. • ATM • Children’s Play Area • Family Restroom • Free Wi-Fi • Gift Cards • Lost and Found • Mobile Device Charging Station • Nursing Lounge • Soft Seating Area • Valet Parking • Wheelchair Rental The Rim is anchored in part by Bass Pro shop, every man’s dream destination. You can add Lowe’s, Best Buy, Dick’s, Target, numerous specialty stops, The Rack and my favorite entertainment, Santiko’s Theater, plus several after movie spots where you can enjoy food and beverage. And if you’re into hobby’s, don’t can’t forget Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. Alamo Quarry Market is a lifestyle center located in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of north central San Antonio. Originally it was Alamo Cement Plant and residents of Alamo Heights and other commuters headed downtown are used to seeing the landmark smoke stacks. It has been redeveloped into a thriving market featuring some of my favorite retail shopping, a Regal Cinema theater which dominates the oldest building, and is surrounded by thriving businesses including bookstores and many well known restaurants. as a few other relatives and friends on my list." The Shops at La Cantera is one of my favorite places, mainly because it’s convenient for me, and I like the outdoor feel. Plus I like Perry’s, Whiskey Cake, Kono Grill is an old favorite, Bar Louie, Grimaldi’s Pizza and who can forget P.F. Chang’s. Oh, did you mention, chocolate, ice cream and cheesecake, yummy! I’d have to agree with the hype, “The Shops at La Cantera is an award-winning open air shopping center located at 1604 and IH10. It’s Distinguished by its unique design, an impressive assortment of high-end retailers and dining choices, which includes a variety of upscale restaurants.”
Rolling Oaks Mall is a regional shopping mall located in northeast San Antonio, Texas, at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches Rd. The mall is anchored by Dillard’s, Macy’s, J.C. Penney, and Sears. It is owned by the same corporate owners as Ingram Park Mall. If you’ve planned a day of shopping and are headed to the outlet shops in San Marcos, it’s a convenient place to start the day. Rolling Oaks has three major department stores and 100 other retailers you’ll want to check out this holiday season. Regardless of where you live and work, San Antonio offers the finest value in shopping and dining. Take my word for it! ■

Pamper Me Please Me LOMA DE VIDA SPA & WELLNESS CENTER // BY: KIM YOUNG // PHOTOGRAPHY: JASON ROBERTS
F
all is my favorite time of year, and what could possibly make the day any better than a day at the spa? I was excited to recently attend the opening of La Cantera's new spa and wellness center, Loma de Vida (Hill of Life). Be still my soul. I never knew how good wellness could look, feel or taste. My senses were overwhelmed in the best of ways. The Loma de Vida Spa provides those experiences rarely found anywhere else. Their unrivalled offerings focus on complete relaxation benefiting the body, mind and soul with holistic, meditative and restorative services, in a Texas element bringing the outside in with complementing European influences. Loma de Vida Spa is one of the main features in the transformation of La Cantera Resort & Spa as a Destination Hotel collection. Sitting proudly into the hillside, it's surrounded by dramatic views of the San Antonio cityscape coupled with a serene hill country atmosphere. I was privileged to sit down with Maggy Dunphy, Executive Director of Spa and Wellness for Destination Hotels and La Cantera Resort. "We meet people where they are," she said. The tear in her eye and passion in her voice convinced me that this isn't just another spa to her. "A change in spirit has a ripple effect. I believe we can change the world," she said. Loma de Vida Spa is a culmination of 20+ years creating the perfect
58
social place for people to go for pampering and wellness. Whether you're looking for solitary spiritual restoration, a place to mourn or a sophisticated place for fun and celebration, Loma de Vida Spa is a place of peace and beauty to go to and be pampered. There are a menu of wellness and beauty treatments you can select from. Boasting 17,000 square feet of indoor space, there are massage rooms, facial rooms, two couples' suites and two Sky Lofts. There is a Gathering Place to recharge and reconnect which would be a great place to bring your friends and family, and the Sky Lofts are the perfect accommodations for VIPs, couples or a small group of six, overlooking the first hole of the Resort golf course. In celebration of the opening event, Jeweler, Tracee Nichols was inspired to create an exclusive Hill of Life pendant. Nichols explained to me that her designs have a special meaning and there are four journeys behind the elegant 14 karat gold piece, available only at Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness at La Cantera Resort & Spa. â–
Loma de Vida Spa is open to the public. Local residents can purchase a daily spa pass to utilize not only the spa but also select resort amenities. To book your transformation getaway check in at www.destinationhotels.com/la-cantera-resortand-spa or call (210) 558-5538.
