自序 PREFACE
腳踝上的勳章 陳武鎮│藝術家 一位老年政治受難者拉起褲管,露出腳踝上當年遭受刑求留下的醜陋疤痕,周圍觀看的人臉上出現很複雜的 表情:恐懼、噁心、同情、難以置信。同為政治受難者的我,在一旁審視那些表情,好奇又傷感。因為我認 為腳踝上的不是傷痕,而是為理想犠牲後得到的勳章,一道疤痕,一枚勳章,亮麗而且耀眼。 看到路邊一隻瘸了腳的狗,正常人的內心都會興起不忍之情。看到遭受家暴的婦孺,正常人免不了感到難過, 甚至一掬同情之淚。刑求是人類施加於人類之暴行的極至,刑求的目的,就是以心理或生理難以忍受的手段 要你認罪、要你作供,出賣自己、出賣朋友、出賣同志、出賣至親。於是施刑者創造出種種匪夷所思的花招, 施刑者當時已經不再是人,沒有人性﹔施刑者成了魔鬼,顯現了魔性。 受刑者可以不屈,繼續受苦,也可以屈服認供,暫時得到解脫。有的受刑者想到以小換大,供出自以為無關 緊要的人,於是就有不識字又膽小的農夫成為政治犯的怪事。 第二次世界大戰後,曾對無辜平民百姓施暴的納粹黨人和公職人員並不能以「承受上級命令不得不服從」而 免於追究刑責。台灣的白色恐怖時期,在人人自危的氛圍之下,有許多人,或有意或無意,成為統治者的爪 牙和幫凶。為得到較好的生活條件而加害他人。爪牙和幫凶的身份有文的,也有武的﹔有白道,也有黑道。 在那樣的時代,能甘於寒微、不賣友求榮,竟需要相當的勇氣。

台灣也曾有一段時期,人會在工作場所或住家被帶走,就此音訊全無。再出現時已成了野外棄屍,或水面浮屍, 身上有受虐傷痕,隨身貴重財物甚至手錶、皮鞋都已失落,有的人到今天仍無處尋索,不知是生是死。 近十年來,我發表大量以白色恐怖時期人權傷害為題材的作品。有一位我敬重的老師來電關心,我是否一直 走不出昔日曾坐政治黑牢的陰影。其實正因為完全走出來了,所以我才能够坦然面對自己的過去,面對台灣 這一頁不堪的歷史。我以人權為題材,就如同畢卡索畫馬戱團生活、梵谷畫吃馬鈴薯的家庭、竇加畫洗衣坊 疲憊的洗衣女工和練舞的芭蕾舞女一樣,關注社會較悲苦的一面。 解嚴前後幾年,是我藝術創作日漸甦醒的時期,那時我以學生為模特兒,畫了許多內心鬱悶的少年像。由於 居住蓮鄉白河附近,也畫了許多花朵全被剪掉出售的無花睡蓮。 作為一個藝術創作者,有坐政治黑牢的親身體驗來當畫作題材,就某種角度而言,是既痛苦又幸運的事,一 路走來,我受到不少公家機關的支持和民間團體的鼓勵,也受到多位社會賢達或公開或隱名的贊助,無條件 的推介我的作品,感謝在心。

Medal on the Ankle Chen Wu-jen │ Artist
An elderly ex-political prisoner raised his trouser legs to reveal the horrible scar on his ankle from torturing at the time. Those around him showed a mixture of expressions: fear, disgust, sympathy, and disbelief. As a fellow ex-political prisoner, I quietly surveyed the bystanders’ expressions in curiosity and sadness. I believe those are not scars on his ankles, rather, I see them as medals received after sacrificing for his belief; to me, each scar is like a dazzling and resplendent medal. Normal people will feel a sense of sympathy when they see a crippled dog on the roadside or even shed tears when they witness women and children suffer from domestic violence. Torturing is the ultimate form of violence someone can inflict on other human beings; the purpose of torturing is to make you admit to your guilt or sell out yourself, friends, comrades, or even your close relatives via unbearable psychological or physiological means. Therefore, the torturers devised myriads of unthinkable tricks. They were no longer humans with flesh and blood; instead, they became demons with evil personalities. The tortured can either remain unyielding and continue his/her suffering, or admit to being guilty and receive temporary salvation. Some of the tortured believe they could get away by giving up someone whom he regard as less important, hence illiterate and cowardly peasants often became political prisoners. After WWII, Nazi party members and public servants who have exerted violence on innocent civilians were not pardoned by using “obeying a direct order from the superior” as an excuse. During the White Terror in Taiwan, everyone felt they were at risk and many people became the minions or accomplices of the ruler, knowingly or unknowingly. In order to obtain a better living condition, they often inflicted harm on others. The identity of minions and accomplices can be categorized as civil and military, or police and mafia. During that time, to remain humble, poor, and not to betray one’s friends for personal gain required a certain degree of courage.

At one point in Taiwan, people were taken away at work or from their homes and vanished without a trace. When they were eventually found, their bodies were either dumped in the wild or floating on water. With their bodies covered in scars, the victims’ valuable personal belongings such as watches or leather shoes were also often missing. For some people, they were never found and no one knew whether they were alive or not. For the past decade, I have created a lot of paintings on human right abuses during the White Terror era. One respectable teacher called me to express his concern about whether I can be liberated from my haunted memories of the political prison. Actually, I have, therefore I can face my past experience of being a political prisoner and the unspeakable history in Taiwan with an open mind. Inspired by the subject of human rights, I pay attention to this more miserable side of society, just like Picasso painting the life of a circus family, Van Goth’s painting “The Potato Eaters”, Degas’ tired “Laundry Maids” and “Ballet Dancers” practiced. The few years before and after the lifting of the martial law was the period of awakening for my artistic creation. At the awakening time, I used students as models to paint the portraits of many depressed youths. Since I lived near the lotus township of Baihe, I also pained lots of flowerless lotuses that have had their flowers removed for sale. As an artist, to have the personal experience of being locked up in a political prison is both a curse and a blessing. Along the path of my creation of paintings on human right abuse, I have received support from numerous government institutions and encouragement from civil organizations. I also have received some personal sponsorship, either publicly or anonymously, they have unconditionally recommended my work to the public. I am grateful for that.

Wanli Township, Taipei County 1969 September – Drafted into the Zuoying Navy Recruit Training Center; he underwent military trial for rebellion because he wrote down anti-MKT expressions on the aptitude test paper. 1970 Sentenced to two years imprisonment in accordance with Article Seven of the Act for the Control and Punishment of Rebellion. He abandoned his appeal and was incarcerated in Taitung’s Taiyuan Correctional Facility 1971 After he was discharged from prison, he worked as a clerk in a English bookstore in Kaohsiung and later became a tutor of a cram school in Banqiao 1973 He was discharged after completing his military service 1973 Solo exhibition at the National Tainan Social Education Hall 1974 Reinstated as a teacher at Daping Elementary School in Wanli Township, Taipei County 1975 Transferred to Dongyuan Elementary School in Dongshan Township, Taitung County and then to Xinying Elementary School in Tainan County 1980 Graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Night School of NCKU 1986 Solo exhibition at the Tainan Municipal Tainan Cultural Center 1988 Compilation and Review Committee member for the teaching guidance of elementary school art, NICT (National Institute for Compilation and Translation) 1989 Four-Artist Joint Exhibition at the Minsheng Gallery in Taipei City 2001 Chen Wu-jen and Chen Yu-zhu couple joint exhibition in the library of CCU
