Design Brief Specification

• I decided that my project would be based in Barking. I have noticed that the barking environment around here is very undeveloped. There are a few buildings around, but the rest of the area is mostly open space. With the increase in housing, there is a lot of barking being developed right now, so I thought it would be a good place to place my design. I have noticed that Barking doesn't seem to have many shopping areas apart from a few markets in the area, so I figured adding a Café in the area could bring more money to the area and help with the redevelopment of what Barking is bringing more people into the local economy too.

• Theme = Nature and organic materials.

• Needs to have an open space.

• GARDEN SPACE

• Outdoor seating

• Shaded areas

• Free Wi-fi

• M/F Toilets

• Disabled facilities

• Café provides Interior and Exterior eating

• A pavilion like structure.

Barking Station

The new station was opened as part of the London Tilbury & Southend Railway's new line which left the Eastern Counties Railway's main line at a new junction at Forest Gate. Two separate LT&SR trains from London departed from Fenchurch Street and Shoreditch and were combined at Stratford for the Tilbury journey (and split at Stratford in the opposite direction).Barking was a small village at the time and the original railway station was a two-platform affair which opened on 13th April 1854. Congestion in Stratford and a deterioration in the relationship between the lessees operating LT & SR and the Eastern County Railroad created a new route between Barking and the Gas Factory Junction, which joined the London & Blackwall Extension Railroad in 1858.

Site:

The area that I've chosen is a site near barking station as well as near local schools and shopping districts.

1889 rebuilding:

§ An additional through platform on the underside of the station.

• Two existing platforms have been extended to accommodate longer trains.

• New station building

• New cattle dock

1902-1908 Developments:

In 1902, the LT&SR made some adjustments to the signaling system that had a positive impact. These changes were a precursor to more significant changes that would take place in the area in the future. A new bridge over the River Roding was opened in 1900 and the old bridge was replaced in 1903.The new scheme saw the Great Eastern/T&FGR trains running on the northern lines and the LT&SR trains on the southern lines.

Residency

• Going on google maps I tried to map out and colour coded all the local residencies and schools around the area to help with my research.

• The site being close to the school means that it could be easily found by students and workplace.

• The site I have chosen is an open space and there is no clear obstruction.

Site potential Layout

- Green spaces

- Open spaces / Cafe

- Dull spaces / Pavilion

• The layout of the first pavilion has a wide walkway to create a comfortable and not to crowded atmosphere.

- Walkway

• The second layout creates more of an opportunity for green spaces. With the pavilion attached to the green area to creates a more natural and comfortable atmosphere

• The space in the middle create a synergy and a central area within the site. There is not a lot of walkway around the site making the green spaces overtake the layout.

Nouvelle Comédie de Genève Theatre

Geneva, Switzerland

The New Comedies is a place of creative performance, with its large construction workshops. The New Comedies is a place where theater professionals from all walks of life come together to create art. The project places the performance halls at the heart of the building, which allows for a unique cross-section of programs. This gives the building its identity. Public and private circulation spaces surround the programs that they offer access to.

The architecture is discreet and neutral during the day, expressing the character of a place where creativity and production take place. In the evening, a light staging transforms the building into a performance place, affirming its presence in the city and inviting the public to the magic of the show.

Perspective
I really like the Boruc style of the building as well as its sense of minimalism.

Galleria

Gwanggyo, South Korea

The Galleria is a department store franchise founded in the 1970s that has remained at the forefront of the premium retail market in Korea. This store in Gwanggyo, a new city in southern Seoul, is Galleria's sixth branch. Located in the heart of this young urban development, the Galleria is surrounded by tall residential buildings, and its stone-like exterior makes it a natural center of gravity for the public to live in a bridge of light. The store is located in an urban area but overlooks a nature reserve. The building has a mosaic stone façade that gives it a natural look.

The sharp edges and the diamond shape of the building allows it to have a futuristic feel towards the building and this can also be seen through the brutalist base of the building

Hashtag 28

Located in the hill city of Sri Lanka, amidst the vast greenery lies #28, tucked lightly within nature itself. Prioritizing a low impact to the existing terrain, the building is elevated above ground with the added benefit of capturing the sight of the city and mountains through the tree canopy around it.

#28 is a selfcatering boutique hotel that makes the use of the smart hotel system which allows the guests to get advantage of using the building without the assistance of a hotel staff. Guests will check in and check out through smart technology while payments will be managed through an online system, making #28 an ideal getaway even during a pandemic. Trees grow through and beyond the roof terrace, merging with nature and creating a feeling of being in outdoors.

I find the angel and the pillaring of the building interesting, and I hope to put it into my design

Wonderwoods

Utrecht, Netherlands

The Wonderwoods were part of a new variation of the Vertical Forest, which was created to help improve the environment and conserve resources. The 105-meterhigh building can house up to 200 apartments of several types, such as those for young professionals, manual workers, and families. A smart building that is authentic and well-designed considers the surrounding environment by integrating ground floor openings that connect to the surrounding community and by developing the building in a way that is in harmony with the surrounding urban block.

Mood Board: Living Architecture

The integration of living systems on or inside a building envelope is referred to as living architecture. This covers green facades, interior and outdoor living walls, and green roofs. Living Architecture does not include other green infrastructure that does not interface with buildings, like bioswales or urban trees.

Primary Research

Natural Organic Structures

The theme of my project is Natural Organic Structure. I decided to do living Architectures which is my I decided to research living plants. Some of the features of organic architecture are open-concept spaces that flow freely, references to nature in the use of colours, patterns, and textures, and the feeling of being sheltered from the elements. There should be a balance between peace and decoration in a space to allow for reflection and uncluttered space.

• Using the flower petals of the sunflower I sketched a pavilion idea that I might use in mu project. I used the buds of the flower as a ceiling on the pavilion.

• I notice that the plant has a more layering pattern and I try to interpret it into my development by making it have a more circular appearance

• The different between the size and people ratio is too large so I decided to treat as more of an idea sketch

• Experimenti ng with circular shapes

• Using Sketchup I created my 3d model design on my pavilion to be able to size up my scaling as well as my design.

Experimenting with pavilion designs

The pavilion space was important to me as it added dept and level throughout the site and makes it more visually appealing. I experimented with angular shapes to see if I could incorporate it into the main space.

Secondary Research

Site name: Heydar Aliyev Centre

• The Heydar Aliyev Centre is a 57,500 m² building complex in Baku, Azerbaijan designed by IraqiBritish architect Zaha Hadid and noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. The Heydar Aliyev Centre represents a fluid form which emerges by the folding of the landscape's natural topography and by the wrapping of individual functions of the Centre

• The centre is famous for its fluid form, which the architects conceived as a reaction to the rigid architecture of the Soviet era, as well as a reference to Islamic calligraphy and elements of traditional Azerbaijani architecture.

The Exterior Space

The Interior Space

The Centre houses a conference hall (auditorium), a gallery hall and a museum. The project is intended to play an integral role in the intellectual life of the city. Located close to the city centre, the site plays a pivotal role in the redevelopment of Baku.

The design also considers the Islamic history and architectural elements prevalent in the region. This is evident through the rows, grids, or series of pillars in perspective, typical features of Islamic architecture. Moreover, the structure also showcases a series of relief work in the form of calligraphic and ornamental patterns in the interiors on the carpets, walls, ceilings, and domes. Thus, establishing a seamless design language in the volume of the space.

The idea is to connect the architectural heritage and history through a nuanced contemporary interpretation. Moreover, to focus on the continuous relationship between the exterior and interior, the lighting throughout the premise has been strategically designed to imbibe distinctive looks to the structure day and night. Furthermore, the semi-reflective glass used in the building as glazing gives a tantalizing ambiance. This ambiance awakens visitors’ curiosity while not revealing the play of curves in the interiors.

Thus, The Heydar Aliyev Centre is an iconic symbol that showcases the exploration of materials, techniques, and visual and sensory design elements, altogether indicating the potential or ‘out of the box’ visions.

The Exterior Space

Site name: L'Oceanographic

L'Oceanografic is an oceanarium situated on the dry Turia Riverbed to the southeast of the city center of Valencia, Spain, where different marine habitats are represented. It was designed by the architect Félix Candela and the structural engineers Alberto Domingo and Carlos Lázaro.

L'Oceanografic is an open-air oceanographic park, designed by Félix Candela. It is the largest oceanographic aquarium in Europe, covering 110 000 m2 and holding 42 million liters of water. The main entrance doors of the complex are protected by design air curtains from Frico.

Evaluation for Component 1

Throughout the project, I concentrated on building the larger structure of the model and was able to produce several designs that fit the final model. I managed to discover several shapes and sizes that I embedded in my model to give it the rough and complex design that I wanted to find for my model. I was able to create the final configuration that I was not able to create in the initial process of modelling. I think this highlights the improvement of my component from start to finish. I used cardboard and fabric so that I could put the smaller parts and the main structure of the website together while making the base myself. I wish I could create a physical model using only the more complex parts such as foam and 3D prints so that it was clear to everyone what my ideas were about. But even though I was misusing my time and underestimating and what I needed to do to create the model, I feel like I succeeded in putting out my final ideas for my structure. Both in terms of my rough design and physical configuration, inspiration from several buildings and architects, such as Stefano Boeri Architetti and his geometric designs, has helped my project develop so far. I believe this highlights my own growth from start to finish as I am confident that when I look back on this project in the future, I will see further growth and development as an architect and as a person.
